CAPE TOWN INTERNATIONAL CHALLENGE: WORLD CLASS FOOTBALL IS EXPECTED

The City of Cape Town, in partnership with the South African Football

Association (SAFA) and the Provincial Government of the Western Cape, will host the first Cape Town International Challenge from April 8 to 10, 2010.This football competition will see under-20 teams from South Africa; Nigeria; 2014 World Cup host country, Brazil; and current under-20 world champions, Ghana, participate in the hopes of winning an exciting new title.

The tournament will be split between Newlands Stadium and the Cape Town Stadium. Match details are as follows: Newlands Stadium Date: April 8, 2010 First match: 14h00 Second match: 18h00 Cape Town Stadium Date: April 10, 2010 First match: 16h30 Second match: 19h00 It is planned that the Cape Town International Challenge will become an annual event and will form part of the City’s goal to leave a legacy long after the 2010 FIFA World Cup 2010™ events. It will be an official World Cup Test event, with the 68 000-seater Cape Town Stadium hosting its first full-capacity, night-time football event. In addition, this will also be the first international football event at the stadium.“I want to urge the people of Cape Town to attend this event in their numbers. We need your help to test the City’s readiness to host the biggest event of all,” said Executive Deputy Mayor Alderman Ian Neilson. He described the event as a dress rehearsal for the World Cup adding that, “we want to make it affordable and accessible to all the people of Cape Town and indeed the Western Cape”.

Alderman Neilson continued that, “the City is committed to showcasing the raw talent of our youth. Some of the players in these teams will become household names in a few years and may even compete in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil”.

South Africa has a history of successful players emerging from its under-20 teams. These players often go on to represent the country at a national level.“The City is very pleased that this event gives us an opportunity totest our readiness and encourages Capetonians to enjoy the event along with us,” said Alderman Neilson.

TWO OCEANS MARATHON

www.twooceansmarathon.org.za As its name suggests, the marathon takes in two oceans, the Indian and Atlantic Oceans, and continues along a breathtaking route to its triumphant finish at UCT's Upper Campus on the slopes of Table Mountain. A mixture of breathtaking scenery, a grueling test of fitness and the unrivalled atmosphere are just some of the components which combine to present this hugely popular event.Since its inception in 1970, when just 26 runners participated, the marathon has grown immensely and now attracts close to 26 000 participants across all the distances, including an increasing number of international entrants. Participants can choose from various distances - the scenic 56km ultra marathon, the popular 21km half marathon and the 5km or 2.5km fun runs.

The Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon Half Marathon is the largest half marathon in South Africa attracting a record number of 12 000 entrants in 2009.The marathon now synonymous with the Easter Weekend, features pre-race activities such as the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon Expo, Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon International Friendship Run, and Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon Fun Runs on Easter Friday.

• The Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon is run under the rules of IAAF, Athletics South Africa (ASA) and Western Province Athletics (WPA).

• The 54km ultra marathon route remains the same as last year, and starts at 6:25am in Newlands Main Rd. • The 21.1km half marathon route remains the same as last year, and starts at 6am in Newlands Main Rd. • Entries close on 3 March • Runners must be at least 20 years old • Runners must qualify by completing a marathon (42.2km) within 5 hours from 1 September 2009 onwards

• Only pre-race entries are accepted (maximum 10 000) - no late entries, no upgrade, no downgrades, no substitutions • Runners are encouraged to enter online with a credit card • All runners are seeded • Seconding is not permitted • All runners who finish within the different cut-off times are awarded medals based on their finishing time under 7 hours, which is the race cut-off time.

• Prize money totals approximately R1 million

www.riebeekvalley.info The 10th annual Riebeek Valley Olive Festival, the largest of its kind in South Africa, will take place over the weekend of 30 April - 2 May 2010, in the picturesque country hamlets of Riebeek Kasteel and Riebeek West located in the Cape West Coast region of the Western Cape.

Riebeek Valley is the primary olive oil and olive producing region in South Africa, boasting four of the top olive producers in the country, and is home to two Italian trained olive oil graders.

TOURISM NEWS Cape Town reaps benefits as gateway to Antarctica Cape Town, for many years a launching point for early sea explorations, is now one of five official ’gateway cities’ to Antartica, an international arrangement that is set to generate substantial economic benefits for the mother city.

Along with Christchurch in New Zealand, Hobart in Australia, Ushuaia in Argentina and Punta Arenas in Chile, the City has signed a statement of intent that binds it to jointly explore the benefits of academic and best practice exchange in respect of Antarctica.

The other cities already have significant Antarctic tourism, outreach and academic programmes. “Besides its Antarctic academic programme at the University of Canterbury and inclusion in the school curriculum, New Zealand’s most visited tourist attraction, the

International Antarctic Centre, provides visitors with a simulated experience of Antarctica, including its storms, snow and ice, “says Alderman Felicity Purchase, Mayco member for Economic Development and Tourism, who signed the agreement on Cape Town’s behalf in September last year.Other tourism initiatives include catering for Antarctic-bound tourists. Most people get there by small or medium ship, and on arrival are flown onto the mainland to try their hand at mountaineering, skiing, or visiting the South Pole.

The tourism market is big, with some 24 000 people visiting the continent via Ushuaia and Punta Arenas each year, despite the absence of any tourism infrastructure for them once they’ve arrived.

“This is because Antarctica is a unique envi-

ronment, where visitors are required to adhere to strict environment management requirements” explains Henry Valentine, Director : Antarctica & Islands, Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEAT). “It is a continent that belongs to no single country.

Instead, it is used exclusively for peaceful and scientific purposes by the 48 member countries, most of which have research bases there, including South Africa. Many visitors are attracted to it on account of its desolate, windswept icy beauty. In the 2007-2008 summer season, there were 46 265 visitors.”

Cape Town’s proximity to Antarctica, along with its sophisticated infrastructure and high level of technical and logistical support, means that the city has become increasingly popular as a provider of scientific and logistical support to vessels headed there and back - hence its development into a gateway city.

Besides South Africa’s own research station (SANAE) and polar research vessel (the SA Aghulhas, which ferries teams and supplies to South Africa’s bases on Gough and Marion islands and SANAE), the city currently services eight countries (Norway, Belgium, Germany, India, Russia, the United Kingdom, Finland, Sweden and Japan) for their Antarctic and South Sea expeditions by supplying their maritime and aviation requirements.

“Polar vessels generally spend in excess of R7.5 million per visit on supplies, equipment and building material whilst here, and the DEAT spends R1.5 million per annum on repairs to machinery coming back from Antarctica,” says Cllr Purchase. “The newness of South Africa’s base, SANAE in Antarctica and its weather station on Marion Island puts Cape Town at the forefront of this technology.

A South African consortium based in Paarden Eiland has been awarded the contract to build the new British Base at Halley Bay. The contract value for this project is in excess of R260 million.”

The potential for increasing Cape Town’s Antarctic logistical support and supply industry is huge. The Cape Higher Education Consortium (CHEC) is already discussing knowledge and

resource sharing with Canterbury University and the MTN Sciencentre is looking into modelling an exhibition on the Antarctic Centre. Already, the centre hosts an open day

(26 June 2010) on the SA Aghullas. This features a mini-exhibition and a number of talks by researchers, says Julie Cleverdon, Director MTN Sciencentre. “Because of its ‘icy charm’ and the trials of living and working in this, the coldest place on earth, it has certainly captured our visitors’ attention.”

South Africa has maintained an interest and presence in Antarctic since 1959. It is a signatory to the Antarctic Treaty, which serves as the framework for all activities undertaken there. The country’s meteorological stations on Gough Island (2 610 km from Cape Town) and Marion Island (2 170 km from Cape Town ) are vital for weather predictions and monitoring, and its Antarctic scientific programme, besides being a matter of national pride, contributes to international efforts to counter global warming and understand climate variability (past, present and future).

Besides containing 70% of the world’s fresh water in the ice that covers it, the Antarctic is also known as the world’s thermometer. It is here that scientists can best study the effects of global warming and the hole in the ozone layer, and so help save the planet.

WILDLIFE ALL WESTCOAST OSTRICH SHOW RANCH History reveals that ostrich chicks were traded by the original Khoi inhabitants with the Dutch Settlers in 1652 and exported from Cape Town to Batavia (now Indonesia) in 1656. There were also exports to India and the Emperor of Japan in 1658. The first documented ostrich farm was established in the centre of Cape Town in 1679. The Overberg, meaning area "over the mountain", consists of large agricultural fields, which form the modern day habitat of the blue crane. While about 25 000 of the elegant birds remain common in big areas of their historic range, there has been a sudden population decline in the last 25 years and the crane is now classified as vulnerable.

1. Blue Route: This route is on a dirt road with fairly rough patches and corrugations. However, it is very scenic and parts are shady as gum trees line the road.

2. Purple Route: The majority of this route is on a tar road with a dirt road section that is in a fair condition if it has not rained heavily.

3. Green Route: This is an interesting route with lots of wildlife. However, the dirt road section can be rough and difficult to travel on in wet conditions.

The story of the penguin colony in Cape Town started in 1983 when a pair was spotted on Foxy Beach at Boulders. Since then the colony has grown rapidly and now totals about 3 000 Boulders Beach penguins. The birds came to False Bay from Dyer Island after the reduction in commercial pelagic trawling, which has increased the supply of pilchards and anchovy - part of the penguins’ diet.Boulders Beach is located in Simon’s Town, just over the hilly peninsula from Cape Town.
