the Amazon in South America. Table Mountain must now compete for a place among the top 7 wonders to be announced in 2011. “We were really excited when our mountain made it through to the list of 77 sites which were voted in by the public. And we are now delighted that the judges have shown their appreciation for this World Heritage Site and given Table Mountain a chance to compete against other incredible natural phenomenon,” said Sabine Lehmann, CEO of Table Mountain Cableway, who, together with Table Mountain National Park, formed an official

supporting committee to champion the mountain’s cause. Table Mountain is the one of only two African sites to have made the prestigious list, along with Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. The much-loved landmark beat fellow contender Sossusvlei in Namiba in round three of the international competition. The campaign is run by the New7Wonders Foundation which is based in Zurich, Switzerland and works to document monuments and conservation efforts worldwide. Candidates in the Official New7Wonders of Nature campaign are clearly defined natural sites that have neither been created by nor significantly altered by humans for aesthetic reasons.

Stellenbosch Wine Route

Franschhoek Wine Route

Constantia Valley is the wine route at the heart of the Mother City (or at least a little to the left of it). This is the oldest wine-growing area in Southern Africa and stretches from Wynberg hill in the north, to the Silvermine mountains (the Tokai area) in the south. The five wine cellars on the route boast a winemaking history dating back to 1685 . Constantia Valley Association: 021 762 8769 For more information:www.constantiavalley.com

The Stellenbosch Wine Route was the first in South Africa and all the estates along the route are within a 12km radius of the town. It is arguably the country´s most famous, and includes 106 cellars - most of which are open to the public. From Cape Town take the N1 in a northerly direction and turn off at the Exit 39 onto the R304 and follow through into Stellenbosch. Franschhoek was founded over 300 years ago when the French Huguenots settled in the Berg River Valley. The wine route here is comparatively small with only 29 cellars, but what it lacks in wine route variety, it makes up for in quality cuisine and breathtaking scenery. A perfect mini-break destination. Franschhoek is 85km outside of Cape Town. Call Franschhoek Tourism: 021 876 3603 For more information:www.franschhoek.org.za

TOURISM NEWS A Trip to Century City

New options for transport to and from Cape Town International Airport A wide range of transport options will be available to commuters travelling to and from Cape Town International Airport once extensive upgrades to the airport are completed in April 2010. “Facilities include ample parking, easy access to public transport, coaches and shuttles and a safe passage to the new conveniently located consolidated car rental area. As all passengers exit through the new Central Terminal Building, there is no distinction between the modes of transport available to international and domestic passengers” says Deidre Hendricks, Communications Manager, Airports Company South Africa: Cape Town International Airport. The new drop-off lane on the upper level of the Central Terminal Building greatly enhances the ease and efficiency for all commuters departing from Cape Town International Airport.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT SHUTTLE From 29 May 2010, a shuttle bus service will operate between the Transport Plaza in front of the new Central Terminal Building, and the new Civic Centre Bus Station in Hertzog Boulevard. Buses will depart as often as every six minutes during peak periods, and not more than every 30 minutes during off-peak periods. The bus schedule will be available at the bus station in the Transport Plaza, where tickets can be bought at R50.00 per trip. The airport shuttle will operate most frequently after matches for passengers needing to leave Cape Town directly after a match.

prevent passengers having to cross the main access road through traffic.

PARKING More than 5 500 parking bays are available in the two multi-storey parkades, with a further 1 600 bays in the two shaded parking areas. “The aforementioned systems will help to ensure safe and reliable transport to and from the airport for all residents and visitors during the World Cup and beyond,” says the City’s Communication Director and 2010 Spokesperson, Pieter Cronje.

PASSENGERS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS A large number of ‘Disabled Bays’ are conveniently located on the ground floor of the two parkades, with easy access to the Central Terminal Building. Specially marked ‘Disabled Bays’ are also available on the upper level drop-off lane.

Designed in the format of a magazine, FTV’s menus not only showcase mouth-watering foods, but also includes interesting articles about the latest gossip on who’s who of Fashion TV. Unlike traditional menus, Fashion TV features a famous celebrity on the front cover. This month, Jessica Alba, makes an appearance in a sexy white number. This different take on the menu allows patrons to take the menu home with them and read it at their leisure – as they would a traditional magazine. There were also exports to India and the Emperor of Japan in 1658. The first documented ostrich farm was established in the centre of Cape Town in 1679. The support from industry, local and international media has been outstanding and reiterates our ongoing efforts and stance against animal cruelty – such as the despicable canned lion hunting industry. Located near Oudtshoorn, in the Klein Karoo, is a universally unique conservation project, and its here that you can get up close, within a few metres of their burrow, to a group of extraordinary meerkats or suricates - the only wild community known to exist outside the Kalahari. Tours are done strictly on an ‘observe and conserve’ basis, with very limited numbers permitted to visit at a time, so the troupe, who migrate in search of food constantly, are never interfered with or disturbed. It’s best to seek out these highly social, fiercely territorial and endlessly entertaining creatures at sunrise or dusk; and aside from getting all the meerkat low-down, you’ll learn about the other Shy 5 members – porcupine, antbear (aardvark), bat-eared fox, and aard-

The Overberg, meaning area "over the mountain", consists of large agricultural fields, which form the modern day habitat of the blue crane. While about 25 000 of the elegant birds remain common in big areas of their historic range, there has been a sudden population decline in the last 25 years and the crane is now classified as vulnerable. 1. The story of the penguin colony in Cape Town started in 1983 when a pair was spotted on Foxy Beach at Boulders. BEST OF IKHWEZI Two of the plays which achieved great success at the Ikhwezi Theatre Festival held at the Baxter in March are now repeated for a wider audience as a double bill. ALLIE PAD FUNNY WORCESTER: A one-woman comedy show that focuses on specific Western Cape cultures of coloured, black and white people, looking at their way of life. Shimmy Isaacs leaves her home town of Worcester at the age of 16 to pursue acting. Through her journeys as a confused coloured woman she comes into contact with all sorts of cultural dilemmas of her own race and others. Real issues and experiences are tackled in this humorous stand-up comedy performance, depicting characters that have influenced her experiences and way of life. A PLAGUE OF HEROES: This is Vusi’s story, told from within the confines of Durban’s horse-racing Tote call centre. He grew up in KwaMashu township and during his school years fell under the spell of the local gangster elite – the ‘heroes’ of the township. The life of crime escalated to Jo’burg where he joined the elite in a short but intoxicating life-style. Vusi is now a paraplegic, determined to reform his life and give new meaning to the idea of heroism. A tough-minded, often witty and unsentimental South African parable. The Baxter Theatre Centre, 25 May- 5 June, R80 from Computicket: 083 915 8000

Nearly 14% of global greenhouse gas emissions result from transport. It would be unrealistic to expect people not to travel, but there are real ways that you can travel more efficiently! With petrol and air travel costs skyrocketing (pardon the pun), now is a good time to change the way you travel, saving the planet and your pocket at the same time!

DRIVING

• Drive less. • Choose a fuel efficient car. • Check your tire pressure - incorrect tire pressure results in higher petrol/diesel usage. • Drive smoothly - your car burns the most fuel when you are accelerating. Avoid sharp braking and accelerating to save petrol. • Car pool the kids - why have four parents stuck in traffic. Do lifts for other parents and vice versa.

FLYING Greenhouse gases which are released at high altitudes have an even greater impact on climate change. • Avoid unnecessary flying - urge your business to invest in tele- and video-conferencing facilities. • Fly direct - most of the fuel used when flying is used during the take off. Fly direct to avoid extra "take-offs".

If one million people replaced one incandescent bulb with a Compact Fluorescent light bulb (CFL), more than 200 000 tonnes of CO2 emissions would be eliminated in a year. CFL light bulbs last ten times longer than traditional bulbs and use a fraction of the energy.

ORANGE : Exercise caution when choosing these as there are reasons for concern: - Rare from overfishing and cannot sustain current pressure. - The fishery that catches them may cause particularly severe environmental damage and/or has high bycatch. - The life-style (biology) of the species makes it vulnerable to high fishing pressure.

A BRIGHTER IDEA

RED : These species are illegal to buy or sell in South Africa. Some are specially protwcted and others are "no-sale" species, reserved for recreational fishing only (you need a valid recreational permit to catch them, and must adhere to specific regulations).

Avoid opening the fridge, the freezer or the oven unnecessarily. For each minute a fridge door is open, it takes three energy guzzling minutes for it to cool down again. It can take a freezer as long as thirty minutes to regain its temperature if the door is open for just one minute. Every time you open the oven while cooking, you lose heat, making the meal take longer and use more energy.

SASSI is collaborative initiative by WWF South Africa andothers that aims to improve the conserva tion status of overexploited seafood species through education and awareness. The list tells you about which seafood species are legal and more sustainable choices from South African fish population.

KEEPING IT CLOSED

Each color has different meaning:

.... at home

GREEN : The most sustainable choices from the healthiest and most well managed populations. These species can handle current fishing pressure.

REDUCING YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT...

DON’T OVERCHARGE Turn off appliances at the wall. Cellular phone chargers, shavers and electric toothbrushes all continue to draw electricity even when they are fully charged. A television left in standby mode uses nearly a quarter of the electricity it uses when it is on.

WARMING THE OL’ GEYSER Geysers can consume as much as 40% of a household’s energy. Set the thermostat to no more than 60 degrees and fit a geyser blanket (available at hardware stores) to reduce lost heat.

DON’T POLLUTE THE ENVIRONMENT OR YOURSELF Clean your home and yourself with products that are good to the environment and to you. Enchantrix stocks a range of organic, biodegradable cleaning products and toiletries and a portion of their profits is donated to WWF. Buy online with a clear conscience at www.enchantrix.co.za.

CAR POOL THE KIDS Sharing lifts with other parents is a great way to reduce traffic, emissions and save on petrol.

KNOWLEDGE IS KEY Make sure your child’s teacher knows about the WESSA/WWF Eco-Schools Programme and encourage the school to sign up by calling the Eco-Schools head office at 033 330 3931.

WWF South Africa was founded in 1968 by the late Dr. Anton Rupert and was then know as the Southern African Nature Foundation. Throughout the past 40 years, this national office of the leading global conservation organization, are still committed to conserve the natural heritage of South Africa for future generations. WWF South Africa currently has 7 main programmes; Climate Change, Trade and Investment, Environmental Education, Species, Marine, Freshwater and the Ecosystems Partnership.
