MESSAGE FROM TOURISM MINISTER DEREK HANEKOM
Minister of Tourism Derek Hanekom
It is a great pleasure to welcome visitors from the United Arab Emirates and other Islamic regions to South Africa. Our country places great value on the diversity of our people, and we respect the cultural and religious practices of all our visitors. In South Africa you will find that we offer a wide variety of leisure, entertainment and adventure experiences, alongside all the facilities required for tourists to participate in their own cultural and religious practices. Whether you are here to enjoy our natural splendour, to go on an exhilarating bush safari, or to spend relaxing days at the beach, you can be assured of great facilities and excellent service at every step of your trip. Tourist arrivals from the Gulf States have doubled in the past six years, which indicates the appeal of our destination and the value it offers to tourists from the region. We invite you to share our amazing natural and cultural heritage. Visit the Cradle of Humankind at Maropeng, globally recognised as the birthplace of civilisation, and discover that all the world’s people share a common ancestor.
Visit Robben Island, where you can see the cell that held Nelson Mandela captive before he became our first democratically-elected President. Here, you will understand how the human spirit triumphs against adversity, and how this prison island shaped modern day South Africa. Visit our wildlife reserves, our mountains and our deserts, and see how we are maintaining our status as a world leader in the conservation of the planet’s biodiversity. Meet as many of our people as you can, enjoy meaningful experiences with them, and join us in celebrating all the wonderful facets of our diversity. Our country is on the road to economic growth and social development. We hope that some of our visitors will see the value of investing in our thriving tourism sector, which abounds with many commercial opportunities. We trust that you will enjoy the exceptional experiences that our country has to offer, that you will take back warm memories of our people and our culture, and that you will return to visit us again.

magnificent mpumalanga By John Lloyd
Mpumalanga is the Zulu name for “the place where the sun rises”. This province in north eastern South Africa, borders the countries of Swaziland and Mozambique. For Marabah readers who plan to visit South Africa, I would like to shortlist a few of the beautiful and interesting attractions that are definitely worth a visit. KRUGER NATIONAL PARK Experiencing a safari while in South Africa has to be high on the bucket list of travelers. South Africa’s largest and most legendary game reserve, the Kruger National Park, in north eastern South Africa, is Africa’s largest game reserve. Its high density of wild animals includes the Big Five (lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and buffalos). Numerous other species of wildlife make their home here, as well as an incredible selection of birdlife and some of the most exquisite trees in Africa, including baobabs, fever, marula and mopane trees. Mountains, bush plains and tropical forests are all part of the amazing landscape. When should you visit? At the height of summer the veld (elevated open grassland) is lush, green and full of migratory birds and baby animals. In midwinter, on the other hand, it opens up and the waterholes get busier. There really isn’t a bad time to visit the Kruger. Useful website - www.mpumalanga.com – Mpumalanga Tourism & Parks
BLYDE RIVER CANYON Mpumalanga’s scenic Panorama Route is home to the famous Blyde River Canyon. This iconic site is the largest green canyon in the world and stretches over 26km and is over 800 meters deep. It is known as a green canyon because of its subtropical foliage. 14
l Marhaba South Africa 2019 Summer Edition
It is the third deepest canyon in the world (after the Grand Canyon in the U.S. and Namibia’s Fish Eagle Canyon). Stand at many of the incredible, jaw-dropping views available. Take some short, easy hikes along the trails and cliffs. You will see beautiful birds and rare plant life while viewing wonderful waterfalls. GODS WINDOW
This is a window like no other. You know it’s going to magnificent if it’s called “God’s Window”, and the views from various points here are superb. The view from God’s Window on the Panorama Route near Graskop is breathtakingly beautiful. On a clear day, you can see spectacular views all the way to the Kruger Park and South Africa’s border with Mozambique. Marhaba South Africa 2019 Summer Edition l

HAZYVIEW ELEPHANT SANCTUARY Ever want to get close to elephants? This beautiful sanctuary is a halfway house for young elephants, after which they are released back into the wild. Located just outside Hazyview, the sanctuary offers a unique opportunity to spend time with these intelligent gentle giants. You can feed, walk trunk-in-hand and get to know more about these fascinating mammals.
PILGRIM’S REST Only 16km from Graskop, you can step back in time as you explore the 19th century gold mining town of Pilgrim’s Rest. It is steeped in history and is a living monument to the gold rush fever that hit the area in the 1800’s.
The town’s original architecture remains largely unchanged since the heyday of the mining era and it tells the tale of the Gold Rush and how miners and residents lived. Explore many of the buildings in the town, all accurately restored to their former glory, such as the Edwardian-style Alanglade House Museum. MAC MAC FALLS The Mac Mac Falls are located 13km from Sabie on the R532 toward Graskop. The Falls are also linked with mining history. This waterfall was originally a single stream, but gold miners blasted it with dynamite to divert the river in an attempt to work the rich gold-bearing reef over which it drops. There is a picnic spot with tables, chairs and ablutions at the bottom at the Mac Mac Pools, where you can swim in pure mountain spring water. The Mac Mac Falls are 65m in height.

DULLSTROOM A two and a half hour drive from Johannesburg and conveniently situated halfway to the Kruger Park, Dullstroom is a charming town and well-worth a visit. It is the capital of fly-fishing in South Africa.
This area of Mpumalanga is well-known for its sparkling rivers, lakes and streams and spectacular scenery. It offers more than fishing alone. You can indulge in other popular outdoor activities like hiking, horseback riding, bird watching, mountain-biking and golf. The town has an Ernie Els designed golf course. Dullstroom is big on culture and has many fine restaurants.
MPUMALANGA IS TRULY MAGNIFICENT Mpumalanga is considered to be one of the most beautiful places in South Africa. People are drawn to the province by the magnificent scenery. Mountains, panoramic passes, valleys, rivers, waterfalls and forests distinguish the landscape. Visit the iconic game reserve and spend a few nights at the world’s best private game lodges. Welcome to a place where majestic mountains meet wild, open seas. A place of rolling green valleys and vast, untouched plains. A place where you can find yourself again. Whatever you are a looking for, you will find it here, because nowhere does it better. The Western Cape is a place of unmatched possibility, from Cape Town to the Cape Karoo, there is something new and unique to be found around every corner. With a history as rich as it is diverse, Cape Town is a city alive with possibility, and is the most well-known of the Western Cape regions. Fondly known as the Mother City, Cape Town is a tantalising and heady mix of cultures, blended in a tumultuous past, resulting in it being one of the world’s most cosmopolitan and enticing cities. The unmatched wonder of Table Mountain is always popular, while in the summer, the many beaches across the city’s coastline are packed with both locals and foreigners alike. Cape Town is a city loved by those looking for luxury offerings, artistic wonder and heavenly gastronomy, while it is also quickly becoming a favourite for those seeking something more extreme, with abseiling, para-gliding and sky diving just some of the adrenaline fuelled activities on offer. But the Western Cape certainly doesn’t stop with Cape Town. It is merely the start of your journey through this wonderful province. The history of the Cape is intrinsically tied to the vine and nowhere is this truer than in the Cape Winelands, but there is far more than wine, of course, with the area equally famous for its world class restaurants, with Franschhoek and Stellenbosch, in particular, leading the way when it comes to gastronomy. Both towns are home to a number of award-winning restaurants, ranging from fine dining to more relaxed experiences. Tandemflight.co.za
Beyond the winelands, lies even more. With everything from majestic mountains – and equally impressive mountain passes – to brilliantly blue coastlines and thick forested areas, the Garden Route and Klein Karoo is a natural wonderland to explore with a hugely diverse number of experiences to enjoy. The Cape Overberg, meanwhile, is widely considered to be the ‘breadbasket’ of the Cape, because of its wheat fields and large harvest of fruits. It is also home to the Marine Big 5 with the coastal town of Hermanus considered the heart of the Whale Coast, particularly from May to October when the whales can be seen by boat or even by land.

As you drive along the Cape West Coast – famous for both its pristine coastal stretches and seasonal wildflowers found inland – you will quickly realise how much this region has been overlooked
by travellers. The aptly named town of Darling has become famous for its wildflowers, which are in full bloom over September, while the Cederberg Mountains boast century-old rock art and are a favourite for hikers, campers and weekend warriors. Last, but certainly not least, lies the Cape Karoo. Known for its harsh, arid climate and stark geology, the Cape Karoo is a place of great beauty, wild game, clear skies, magic sunrises and epic sunsets. It is where you go when you want to escape the hub of city life. Whether travelling by train or by car, the Cape Karoo reminds you to slow down, take it all in, and enjoy your time in the Western Cape.
THE REGIONS OF THE WESTERN CAPE CAPE TOWN
Known as the ‘Mother City’, Cape Town draws people back year after year because of its exquisite natural beauty and cosmopolitan vibe. It’s hard not to recognize the iconic Table Mountain, an official 7th wonder of nature that looms over the busy city. It was formed approximately 600 million years ago under the sea, the movement of glaciers produced the flat table top before the mountain was thrust upwards by tectonic forces. In the Southern Suburbs lies Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, Cape Town’s 101-year old garden, an oasis and national treasure. In 1793 a Swedish botanist was sent a strange looking plant from the Cape which he named Proteas. Today this is South Africa’s national flower. Within walking distance from the city centre you’ll discover the Bo Kaap, one of Cape Town’s oldest residential areas, also known as the Malay Quarter. It’s closely associated with the Muslim community. Built in 1804, the Auwal Mosque was the first in Cape Town and is still in use today. The city is also home to one of Africa’s most visited cultural and historic hubs for shopping, business and entertainment. Robben Island, a World Heritage site where Nelson Mandela spent most of his 27 years in prison, is just a ferry ride away and will move and change you forever. The magnificent coastline surrounding the city includes the historic Cape of Good Hope and Cape Point along the peninsula. Breathe in the sweet scent of Cape Fynbos and salty sea air from the Peninsula’s most treacherous and rocky pinnacle. More than the 1100 plant species are found here and grow nowhere else in the world! You will, without a doubt, lose your heart in Cape Town. CAPE WINELANDS
Framed by sun-splashed vineyards and rugged mountain peaks, the picture-perfect valleys of the Cape Winelands are famous for their grand old estates, quaint towns and award-winning restaurants. An easy hour’s drive from Cape Town, a Wineland’s journey complements a stay in one of the world’s favourite cities. Treat your taste buds at one of the many fine country restaurants situated on open wine estates. With most being easily accessible from Cape Town, surrounding small, long established and stylish towns like Stellenbosch and Paarl, make for convenient outings for visitors. The west coast stretches from Darling in the south to Bitterfontein in the north and is comprised of 44 small towns along the southwestern coast of South Africa within the Western Cape Province. It has all the good looks and lays claim to a variety of unique experiences, but the annual wild flower display in an around Namaqualand takes top honours. Between mid-August and mid-September the entire region bursts into a kaleidoscope of colour as the flowers carpeting the landscape bloom. Life here is all about community and there is a sense that everything works together. The people will take you in, share their stories with you and leave you wishing you had more time to hear about their interesting lives. You’ll discover fishermen in the villages who have secrets about the sea, who apply the wisdom that they’ve gathered from their fathers and grandfathers. The ancient and mysterious traditions are passed down and worked into the everyday. Dancing the “Riel” with locals and “braaing askoek” on the fire is an experience you will never forget. With the quaint fishing villages and unspoilt beaches, crayfish and “bokkoms”, this is the perfect getaway CAPE KAROO
The Cape Karoo region is special. Its windmill-peppered landscapes inspire poetry, the scenes resemble movie sets and it is the ultimate escape from the world of urgent phone calls, emails and social media. Discover a place where you get to reconnect with nature, the people and yourself. This desert oasis has a colourful past, one worth discovering and exploring. Khoi and Xam (Bushman) rock art can be viewed in Nelspoort, Beaufort West - the site of the richest engravings or petroglyphs. For those who love history, take a trip to the Anglo Boer War graves and block houses, follow the skirmishes and routes of the battles which range from north to south of Prince Albert. If you are passionate about the paranormal, take the train to Matjiesfontein and find out who Katie was and why she still walks the halls of this enchanting town. For a walk on the wild side, visit the Karoo National Park and see the lions. Kgalagadi lions are known for their impressive dark brown manes. To really get into the fabric of the past, travel back in time along the Smuggler’s Route, an old liquor smuggler’s trail through the settlements of Vleiland and Rouxpos in Laingsburg. CAPE OVERBERG A short one-hour drive from Cape Town over the spectacular Sir Lowry’s Pass lies the Cape Overberg’s magnificent mountain ranges, fynbos (Cape Flora), rolling wheat, canola fields and coastal towns full of delightful stories. Its coastlines are spectacular, the back roads wind across the countryside as they do in a country song and whale watching is as good as it gets. The adventurous get their kicks in a variety of activities such as shark-cage diving in Gansbaai, deep-sea fishing, abseiling and quad-biking. The town of Hermanus (The Whale Capital) is home to the only whale crier in the world! It is no surprise that people flock here to catch a glimpse of these enormous, beautiful creatures. Wander down the Hermanus Wine Route to find out why its wines boast so many awards. Memories and tales from the past come alive in the Cape Overberg’s rich collection of mission stations, shipwrecks and old architectural treasures – all existing harmoniously alongside new developments in the towns. Among others are the Shipwreck museum in Bredasdorp as well as the Apple Museum found in Elgin. The historical, beautiful town of Swellendam, the “Berry Capital of South Africa”, surrounded by three nature reserves is a wonderful place for hikers, bikers and bird watchers. cape town’s biggest attractions These attractions are a must see when visiting Cape Town & Western Cape as they each offer their own unique beauty just waiting to be discovered. TABLE MOUNTAIN
Table Mountain needs no introduction, this iconic landmark towers over Cape Town and can be seen from almost anywhere. One of the natural 7 wonders of the world, this icon can be explored by either a cableway or hike up. Whatever you may decide, you will be amazed at the views on top of this majestic mountain. ROBBEN ISLAND
Robben Island forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage sites of the world and there are few places in South Africa that bear the weight and sheer historical importance. Discover a guided tour by a former inmate on the island which will provide you with a personalized experience through the prison cells and courtyard where many integral political figures such as Nelson Mandela aided in shaping South Africa. The Moturu Kramat can also be found on Robben Island and is sacred to Muslims. Built in 1969 to commemorate Sayed Adurohman Moturu, the Prince of Madura. Moturu was one of Cape Town’s first Imams, he was exiled to the island in the mid-1740s and died there in 1754. CAPE POINT

Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens was voted Garden of the year at the 2015 International Garden Tourism Awards and are located at the foot of the iconic Table Mountain. The gardens are just over a hundred years old. It is the first garden of its kind to be devoted entirely to a single country’s indigenous fauna. Visit the new Treetop Canopy Walkway, the ‘boomslang’ which gives you a bird’s eye view of the gardens and the surrounding beauty. MALAY EXPERIENCES IN CAPE TOWN The Cape Malay community is rich in culture and religious traditions that have played a major role in shaping the history and diversity of Cape Town. Discover Bo Kaap’s colourful houses and cobbled streets, its rich and vibrant history. The best Malay cuisine can be found in Bo Kaap, with guided cooking tours available. Visit the Bo Kaap Museum which showcases local Islamic culture and heritage. Visiting the Kramats, the burial sites of Muslim Saints, can be done on a day trip. Discover the Kramat of Sheikh Yusuf in Faure Macassar near Cape Town. Sheikh Yusuf, known as the father of Islam in South Africa, was an Indonesian Muslim first exiled to the Cape as a prisoner by the Dutch settlers. He was also the first to read the holy Qur’an in South Africa and shortly thereafter the first South African Muslim community was created. The Kramat of Sheikh Mohammed Hassen Ghaibie Shah al Qadri at Signal Hill Road in Cape Town is situated at the top of Signal Hill. The white square structure with a green dome was built to look like a miniature mosque. The Kramats of Sheikh Abdurahman Matebe and Sayed Mahmud in Constantia were two religious leaders who were exiled to the Cape as prisoners of the Dutch settlers. The Kramat of Tuan Guru in Bo Kaap cemetery was a prince from the Trimate islands who was exiled to Robben Island, where he wrote a book on Islamic Jusipudence as well as several copies of the holy Qur’an from memory.

BOAT-BASED WHALE AND DOLPHIN WATCHING & WHITE SHARK CAGE DIVING
Boat-Based Whale and Dolphin Watching (BBWW) and White Shark Cage Diving (WSCD) are commercial activities involving non-consumptive use of endangered and protected species of cetaceans, including dolphins and the Great White Sharks. BOAT-BASED WHALE AND DOLPHIN WATCHING BBWW is the observation of whales and dolphins behaviour in their natural environment from sea-going vessels. South Africa is one of the best destinations worldwide for watching these mammals ,whether from land or from boats, with annual visits from Southern right and humpback whales and enormous pods of dolphins all yearround. In South Africa, BBWW began in the early 1980s and has grown from an adhoc activity to a regulated commercial operation across 28 designated coastal areas.

WHITE SHARK CAGE DIVING WSCD is the observation of free swimming Great White Sharks from vessels and/or from within a protective cage that is submerged in water. The WSCD industry developed shortly after South Africa passed national legislation in 1991 protecting the Great White Shark from all fishing exploitation, and it grew quickly after 1995 in line with global trends. WSCD has provided significant opportunities for on-going access to research on Great White Sharks and opportunities for public education. Regulating utilisation of these species is an important conservation tool to contribute to better understanding of the importance of these top predators in our marine ecosystem. Thus, in addition to providing economic value, regulating BBWW and WSCD provide a greater protection of whales, dolphins and other sharks from consumptive exploitation in the designated areas. BBWW and WSCD operations contribute significantly to the coastal and marine tourism value chain while ensuring the ecological sustainability of these species. BBWW and WSCD have the potential to provide substantial benefits to the local economy in the designated areas by increasing marketing of the area of operation, employing local residents, transferring skills to youth and investing in the corporate social activities. AREAS FOR BBWW AND WSCD OPERATIONS Areas of operations for BBWW stretch along the coastline, from Port Nolloth in the West coast to Sodwana Bay in the North East. WSCD is limited to areas where Great White Sharks aggregate naturally and mostly at seal colonies.Areas where WSCD is allowed are Dyer Island in Gansbaai, Seal Island in False Bay, Quoin Rock at Quoin Point, Seal Island in Mossel Bay and Algoa Bay in Port Elizabeth. MEASURES IMPLEMENTED IN REGULATING BBWW & WSCD BBWW and WSCD are regulated through permits allocated in terms of NEM:BAThreatened or Protected Marine Species Regulations, renewable annually for a period of up to ten (10) years. These commercial industries are also managed through policies used

as management tools to grow the industries, promote sustainable utilisation, raising awareness and instil conservation ethics. Efforts that have been implemented to support sustainable nonconsumptive utilisation as part of permit conditions include restrictions on number of vessel(s) approaching cetaceans, limiting the duration and number of encounters per group of cetaceans. In addition to the permit system, the industries have established industrial bodies that provide inbound service to its members and engage the Department on issues of concern in the industries. GENERAL PROHIBITIONS AND PENALTIES Regulations for the management of boatbased whale watching and protection of turtles prohibits any person without a BBWW permit to approach at a distance closer than 300 meters, any whale and to advertise boatbased whale watching or dolphin watching services or undertake a vessel trip to provide for a swim-withdolphin-experience. Regulations for the management of white shark cage diving restrict any person without a WSCD permit to operate a white shark cage diving operation including chumming or attracting white sharks. The regulations further prohibits approaching closer than 80 meters to a natural predation on seals by white sharks and advertising whites shark cage diving operations or services without a WSCD permit. Any person who contravenes any provisions of these regulations shall be guilty of an offence and liable on conviction to a fine up to a maximum of R300 000 or to imprisonment not exceeding two years. Should a Permit Holder fail to adhere to a permit condition, the Minister may refuse to renew such a permit, or may revoke, cancel, suspend or amend such a permit.

The Port of Cape Town has always been prominent in visits by vessels of explorers, on their way to Antarctica, and more recently by those performing research in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. Captain James Cook’s vessel was in the Port of Cape Town from October to December 1772, and again from January to March 1775. The British polar explorer Ernest Shackleton visited the Port in 1901. Captain Robert Scott also called at the Port during his attempt to get to the South Pole in 1910.
In the last 50 years the focus has changed from exploration and whaling to scientific endeavour. A successful Antarctic programme requires means to cross thousands of kilometres of the world’s stormiest seas, to navigate through Antarctica’s formidable sea ice barrier, and to live and work for extended periods on the coldest, driest and windiest continent on earth.

what is non-alcoholic wine?
Firstly of all, just to be clear, even though you will find many bottles of wine that are labeled as “nonalcoholic wine”, quite a number of them will still have a small percentage of alcohol in them. This is because the starting point of making non-alcoholic wine is always an alcoholic wine. Turning this alcoholic wine into its non-alcoholic cousin involves adding another step into the production process (ie. the removal of alcohol), and it can sometimes be difficult to remove all. Believe it or not, even naturally occurring fruit juices (such as orange juice) will generally also contain a very small percentage of alcohol. Beverages that don’t contain any alcohol at all are labeled as alcohol-free. HOW ARE NON ALCOHOLIC WINES MADE? One of the most common ways to produce non-alcoholic wine is through the process of distillation. Distillation involves applying heat to a liquid mixture (in this case the wine containing alcohol) and thereby separating the component substances (the alcohol) through evaporation. In layman’s terms, since alcohol has a lower boiling point than the other substances in wine, it will evaporate before anything else does when you apply heat to it. This is how you are able to separate the wine and the alcohol. This process is actually very similar to the process of making liquor, but instead of keeping the alcohol and throwing out the rest like you would do when making liquor, we now throw out the alcohol and keep what is left – the non-alcoholic wine. The problem with the distillation process is that you have to apply a significant amount of heat to the wine which can result in a change of the other compounds within the wine as well. This can alter the taste profile, which is something we don’t want. This is why vacuum distillation is often performed when making a nonalcoholic wine. This process basically involves putting the wine under a vacuum resulting in the fact that much less heat is required to separate the alcohol from the wine. This, as a result, turns into a much better tasting non-alcoholic wine. The other process that can be used to make non-alcoholic wine is reverse osmosis or sometimes also referred to as the cold filtration process. The advantage of this technique is that no heat is required but that the alcohol can basically be separated from the wine using a filter. In a nutshell, the wine passes through 44
l Marhaba South Africa 2019 Summer Edition
a filter with pores that are so small that they only allow the alcohol and water to pass through but nothing else. And voila… you end up with non-alcoholic wine. WHY DRINK NON-ALCOHOLIC WINES? 1. They contain approximately a third of the calories of their alcoholic counterparts (generally around 60 calories per 8 OZ glass) 2. You will still be able to enjoy a glass or two of wine but don’t have to worry about how to get home as you will be able to safely drive yourself 3. Some studies say that non-alcoholic red wine actually is more effective at lowering blood pressure than alcoholic red wine 4. It can be a good alternative for those who do not enjoy the effects of alcohol HOW ABOUT THE TASTE? Generally speaking, non-alcoholic wines don’t stand up to their alcoholic counterparts in terms of flavor and complexity. This is especially true for non-alcoholic red wines. The taste is actually fine, but it doesn’t really resemble the flavour of a wine. The reason behind this is because the alcohol content in a wine is generally the vehicle that brings all the aromas together and ultimately provides the mouth feel and “thickness” of the wine. When this vehicle is gone, all these components are still there but they no longer have a delivery method. It’s like a football team without a captain. All the players are still there, but they have no idea what to do or where to go and are unlikely to make an impact. The trick when drinking a non-alcoholic wine is just to approach it differently. You can’t go in there expecting it to taste exactly like the wine you are used to, however that doesn’t mean that it can’t be enjoyable. It’s about having an open mind when you taste it, and not expecting it to taste like wine that has alcohol in it. Marhaba South Africa 2019 Summer Edition l

CAPE OF GOOD HOPE There are few things as exhilarating as standing at the base of a beautiful, 150 year old lighthouse, perched precariously high above the swirling Atlantic Ocean, and knowing that you’re at the most southwestern tip of Africa. Knowing that the next closest landmass, when you look across the icy seas, is Antarctica – more than 4,000 kilometres away. The panoramic views that spread out before you are breath-taking. Literally, because you’ve just earned them with a final push up the final flight of stairs from the upper funicular station. BOULDERS BEACH After you have fallen in love with the penguins head to the secluded Boulders Beach and take a swim in the comparatively warm waters of the False Bay. This beach is ideal for kids as immense boulders shelter the cove from currents, wind and large waves - but please always take care. Also, don’t touch or feed the penguins. They might look cute and cuddly but their beaks are as sharp as
razors and if they feel threatened they have no qualms about nipping the odd finger or nose. Operating Hours: Winter: Apr – Sept: 08:00 - 17:00. Summer: Oct – Nov: 08:00 - 18:30, Dec – Jan: 07:00 - 19:30, Feb – March: 08:00 - 18:30. Tel: 021 786 2329. www.sanparks.org
ROBBEN ISLAND There are few places in South Africa that bear the weight and sheer historical importance of Robben Island, and a trip to the former prison serves as a jarring reminder of country’s troubled political past. At the same time, it reveals itself as a powerful symbol for the triumph of the human spirit, and offers fascinating insight into the reconciliation and resilience that played such a key role in the development of a new South Africa. From the moment you arrive at the humble island, just a short ferry ride from the V&A Waterfront, you’ll feel the impact of this World Heritage Site. A former inmate will guide you while on the island, and you’ll receive unparalleled insight into the significant role that each of the Robben Island’s inmates collectively played throughout apartheid. WELLINGTON WINE ROUTE Halfway between the bright lights of Cape Town and the statuesque mountains of the Western Cape, lies the hidden valley of Wellington, full of surprises and variety, heart and soul. The Berg river flows along the western border with two smaller streams, the Spruit and Kromme and the mighty Hawequas stands guard on the eastern side. The Bainskloof Pass, built by the famous Scot, Andrew Geddes Bain was (before Du Toitskloof Pass) the only gateway to the north. More French people settled here than anywhere else in the Cape and the valley was initially called Val du Charron – valley of the wagon-makers, the last outpost before travellers, pioneers and adventurers attempted the arduous journey into thehinterland with their oxen and theirwagons. wildlife all year around Welcome to Cape Town! South Africa’s melting pot of cultures, languages and bountiful festivities around every corner. Not only Cape Town home to Natural World Heritage Sites, the 7th Wonder of the World and one of the world’s most renowned botanical gardens, but a vibrant city with exquisite museums & galleries, phenomenal dining and coffee shops galore – let’s not forget ‘Truth Coffee’ voted best in the world. With all these opportunities around you, why not indulge in the many options? Take a truly ‘African safari’ or wet your feet shark diving? Alternatively, simply relax and tan on the soft sands of the famous Clifton beaches. With the skyward mountains, sun-kissed beaches of Camps bay, lush-green forests of Tokai & Newlands, Cape Town has something to anyone.
5 RECOMMENDED WILDLIFE MUST-DOS CAPE FUR SEALS Duiker island is home to over 6000 seals who love to sun themselves about on the rocks and audibly snort and grunt at one another, bobbing in the swell while keeping an eye out for fish to eat. They’re mostly brown, but shades vary from caramel to dark chocolate. The pups are born black and slowly grow lighter. These water-logged dogs are inquisitive and friendly when in the water, and will often ‘escort’ scuba divers and snorkelers – but a word of caution: on land they are far less relaxed and tend to panic when people come near them, so rather keep your distance. While the local fishermen may complain about the mischievous bunch, they are a pleasure to watch as they dance in in the water, jouncing along the boat and will often hold a flipper held high to give you high-5. The seals are on the island all year around, however are most active and abundant in the heat of Cape Town’s summer. So beat the heat and climb on board one of Drumbeat Charters’ cruises. Not to forget, you can also spot these pups at Robben Island (Dutch for ‘seal island’) You are guaranteed to encounter pod of Cape Furs cavorting about.
AFRICAN PENGUINS Boulders Beach near Simon’s Town is arguably one of the most beautiful spots in Cape Town – not simply for the venerable granite boulders, crashing crystal-blue waves and the silky white sands, but it’s tiny tuxedoed locals! The African penguins (fondly known as jackass penguins, because of the braying sounds they make) established their colony 1983 and remains the only place in the world where one can get up-close to African penguins. Boulders itself consists of 3 pristine beaches, 1 penguin viewing

area and 3 boardwalks. The boardwalks are placed as a measure to allow for viewing of these marvellous birds, whilst keeping them safe from poking fingers and irresponsible behaviour of people, so please be sure to stay on the boardwalks at all times within the viewing area. Please take care not to touch or feed the penguins – they may look cute and cuddly but their beaks are as razor sharp and if they feel threatened they have no qualms about nipping a finger or nose! You should be able to see the fancily dressed fellows throughout the year - but for a real treat, try to visit in January when the juvenile birds are moulting on the beach. Of course Beach space depends on the tides, so make sure to come at low tide and visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Note, there is limited parking, so arrive early during peak Summer months!
SHARK CAGE DIVING Walk, or rather, swim on the on the wild side with a life-changing experience you will most certainly never forget. Shark diving in can be divided into 2 main seasons: High season - May to October: this the best time to see Great White sharks as the visibility is good and shark activity escalates. Low season: January to March, however shark activity still continues and you have a good chance of spotting these majestic creatures. To avoid disappointment, we recommend that you call the company and ask about their current shark sighting and/or schedule a few days before. As a heads up, it’s a stunning boat ride out with the pros wherein 4/5 people jump in the cage at one time upon a sighting. Although the water temperature may shock you more than the shark, the adrenaline will warm you up quickly! Although nothing beats a genuine face-toface encounter with a Great White, there is also the option to either just tag along for the boat ride or see the phenomenal show from the upper deck of the boat – don’t forget those cameras!
CHACMA BABOONS If you have taken a road trip along the coastal road, you will have bound to bump into a troop or two of some furry primates lolling about foraging, playing or fussing over one another - A human society in miniature, the Chacma baboons in the Cape Of Good Hope Park are truly interesting and uniquelot to observe. What makes this particular large collection of 6 troops unique is during the low tide they may be found roaming the beaches feeding on sand hoppers and shellfish - a very unusual behaviour for primates as their diet mainly consists of fruits, roots, bulbs, insects and scorpions. Watching this bunch can be very rewarding - but do so from a discreet distance. Please don’t get out of your car and leave it open, especially if you have food inside. Keep your windows mostly up and even your doors locked as these quick and agile baboons have been known to jump into cars and steal food, bags and any loose items! The dominant males
have especially large teeth and a dangerous (and painful) bite. Do not feed these animals because this leads to problem behaviour from these highly intelligent primates. These primates are also notorious for their destructive behaviour and if conditioned to receive food may have to be eliminated for public safety. The Chacma baboon troops on the Cape peninsula are the only protected population of the species in the world due to human activity and interaction. BIG 5 SAFARIS Who comes to South Africa and doesn’t go on a safari? South Africa is not one of the World’s greatest tourist destinations for nothing. With the spectacular West and East coast, the formidable Drakensberg mountain range and the Big 5 of the Northern provinces, it’s a “no brainer” why the rest of the world flocks here 365 days a year. Now if you are into horses, Thoroughbreds in particular, South Africa will thrill you on all levels. Kwa-Zulu Natal (KZN), Gauteng and Western Cape are the three major racing centres, with Greyville home to the famous Vodacom Durban July - held on the first Saturday of July. With balmy, 30 degree Celsius winter days, and a 12 carded race meeting, this is undoubtedly the race meeting to attend. Of course, there is something extra special about December through to February in Cape Town. Possibly the best weather that you will ever experience and a host of racing events to keep you entertained. The 2 standout events, at the beginning and end of January are the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate and the Sun Met. This year, we were honoured to have the 52

fastest man on earth, Usain Bolt, as Chief Entertainment Officer for the day. And while Johannesburg doesn’t have the appeal of the mountains and beaches, this city is the centre of everything good in South Africa and is a hive of activity year round. The racing fraternity take pride in their “Summer in the City” racing campaign and ending off sensationally with the Summer Cup, at the end of November at Turffontein Racecourse. This is arguably one of South Africa’s oldest and most challenging racecourses. With official racing in South Africa going as far back as 1795, the sport of horse racing has a long and full history and is home to eight different racetracks throughout South Africa, namely, the Vaal and Turffontein in Gauteng; Scottsville and Greyville in Kwa-Zulu Natal (KZN); Durbanville and Kenilworth in Western Cape, Flamingo Park in the Northern Cape and Fairview in the Eastern Cape. Whilst our South African horses and jockeys do exceptionally well at home, they are no strangers to setting the tracks alight in the rest of the world. South Africa has been represented by a number of jockeys and trainers who have excelled internationally, with perhaps the best example being jockey Michael “Muis” Roberts. Eleven times champion jockey in South Africa. , Michael made history when becoming Britain’s champion jockey in 1992. Our South African bred equine athletes have done exceptionally well on the international circuit. The likes of Camp Fire II (who won the King’s Stand Stakes in 1907) to Colorado King (Grand Rapids) and Hawaii (Utrillo) who won major races in the US in the 1960s. THE RISE AND RISE OF SOUTH AFRICAN MEDICAL TOURISM By John Lloyd
Since legendary South African heart surgeon Christiaan (Chris) Barnard put South Africa’s health care services on the world map by performing the world’s first heart transplant in Cape Town, the country’s reputation for medical excellence has grown. A WORLD FIRST On 3 December 1967, Dr Barnard, performed the world’s first human to human heart transplant at the legendary Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town. This extraordinary event, which pushed the boundaries of science into the dawn of a new medical age, took place inside the Charles Saint Theatre at Groote Schuur Hospital. After a decade of heart surgery, Barnard and his skilled cardiothoracic team of thirty people were well equipped and trained to perform the nine-hour-long heart transplant operation.
Dr Chris Barnard
The recipient was fifty-four-year-old, Louis Washkansky, a grocer with a debilitating heart condition. Washkansky received the heart of a young woman, Denise Darvall, who was run over by a car on 2 December and had been declared brain dead after suffering severe brain damage. Her father agreed to the donation of his daughter’s heart and kidneys. The operation started shortly after midnight on a Saturday night and was completed the next morning when the new heart in the chest of Washkansky was electrically shocked into action. After regaining consciousness, he was able to talk and on occasion, to walk, but his condition deteriorated and he died of pneumonia eighteen days after the heart transplant. Barnard’s second transplant patient Philip Blaiberg, with the operation performed at the beginning of 1968, lived for nineteen months and was able to go home from the hospital. Chris Barnard was celebrated around the world for his accomplishments. He was sometimes controversial and outspoken, but his achievements helped place South Africa high on the medical and healthcare map. This reputation for medical expertise and excellence has grown over the past fifty years. A POPULAR MEDICAL TOURISM DESTINATION South Africa is one of the most popular destinations for medical tourism, boasting some of the best doctors and facilities in the world. It is also blessed with many world-class tourist attractions. The country offers highly affordable medical treatments as well as some of the world’s best doctors, experts and healthcare facilities. An increasing number of people are heading to South Africa for treatments either not available at home or much more affordable than offered in their home country. Medical tourists tend to add a period to privately recuperate where they get the opportunity to recover and relax after their treatments. The options in South Africa are endless, including beautiful Cape Town with its majestic Table Mountain and pristine beaches. The wine farms, spa resorts, a safari in the Kruger National Park and the majestic Mpumalanga region are some other, exciting available options. South Africa has more on offer than just medicine. Many different recovery programmes are available at very affordable and attractive prices. Patients from around the world choose to stay in the country for extended periods and take advantage of the abundant sunshine, world-class beaches, exciting sports, shopping and a variety of other attractions that make South Africa a truly unique tourist destination. Some of the many reasons that South Africa is one of the world’s most popular medical tourism destinations include: Modern living: Unlike many other African countries, urban South Africa and especially Cape Town offers a modern, cosmopolitan experience for medical travellers. 54

Groote Schuur Hospital
Natural beauty: Those who want to take in the country’s abundant natural beauty and get away from the cities won’t be disappointed either. Beautiful scenery countrywide, the opportunity to see wild animals in their natural habitats, and a variety of tranquil, natural settings all promote relaxation and recovery following a medical procedure. Facilities: Medical tourists can expect to find highly trained doctors working in modern, accredited hospitals and clinics with state-of-the-art equipment. Currency: Thanks to the current weakness of the rand, hundreds of medical procedures are available at a comparatively low cost, with most surgeries coming in at roughly a third to half of the price for an equivalent procedure. Language: English is widely spoken in most of the country. South Africa is by far the leading medical tourism destination on the African continent boasting world-class surgeons, specialists and facilities to attend to all your medical needs. These outstanding healthcare services coupled with spectacular tourist attractions makes for a memorable holiday experience. All this comes at a price that is hard to beat, allowing you to take full advantage of all that South Africa has to offer. Medical and wellness tourism is one of the fastestgrowing industries in South Africa, and the country is considered to have the best healthcare system south of the Sahara. Popular treatments in South Africa The most popular treatments for international patients coming to South Africa are various kinds of plastic surgery procedures. Liposuction, breast augmentation, tummy tucks, nose reshaping and facelifts are some of the most common cosmetic surgery procedures performed on international patients. Other popular treatment areas are IVF, heart surgery, organ transplantation, orthopaedic surgery and cosmetic dentistry. FERTILITY AND PREGNANCY – THE MIRACLE OF THE MODERN FAMILY The first baby conceived through In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) was born forty years ago on 25 July 1978 in Oldham, England and made headlines around the world. Louise Brown was the first person ever to be born through the miracle of science. Louise’s birth was hailed as a “miracle” by the world’s media, while initially creating controversy for the church, politicians and the medical profession. Louise grew up at the centre of the debate about the morality of IVF while also being an inspiration to millions of childless couples throughout the world. It was an event that defined a new era for fertility and modern families. Since then it is estimated that nearly seven million babies have been born through IVF, and as treatments and success rates improve, that number is steadily growing. South Africa has a reputation for top-rate fertility experts and specialists. A growing amount of visitors are coming to the country to combine a holiday trip with their IVF treatment. For the readers of Marhaba, who may be considering a visit to South Africa in the future, I decided to visit Wijnland Fertility, one of the country’s leading patient-centered fertility clinics based in the beautiful town of Stellenbosch, twenty minutes from Cape Town International Airport. Stellenbosch is regarded as one of the world’s premier wine routes. I was warmly welcomed by founders of Wijnland Fertility, Dr Johannes van Waart and Lizanne van Waart. The clinic is state-of-the-art, and the van Waart’s are preeminent experts in the field. To provide our readers with valuable insights and advice, I interviewed Johannes and Lizanne: Lloyd: Why decide on a dedicated Fertility Clinic and not your Obstetrician/Gynaecologist? Lizanne van Waart: The choice of Obstetrician/ Gynaecologist is a crucial one. If you have been struggling to fall pregnant, the best doctor to see is a fertility specialist that has been trained in this specific field and is not a general Obstetrician/Gynaecologist. What is equally important is that the fertility specialist is backed by a good laboratory with success rates and up to date technology to create the best possible chance to fall pregnant. At Wijnland Fertility the recorded success rates are excellent. The Wijnland laboratory makes use of the Dr Johannes & Lizanne van Waart Embryoscope incubator to help shorten the time to pregnancy. We practice single embryo transfer which is facilitated by the Embryoscope. Once IVF or ICSI is performed embryos are placed in the Embryoscope and not disturbed till transfer or Embryo Vitrification on day 5. This is different from other incubators where embryos have to be taken out of the incubator to be assessed. The Embryoscope has a built-in Camera that takes a photo of the embryo every 10 minutes. These images are displayed in the form of a video and embryo development can be annotated. This helps with choosing the best embryo for transfer and shortens the time to pregnancy. It is essential to find a combination of an exceptional fertility specialist with an excellent laboratory as both go hand in hand to give the best possible outcome. Lloyd: Why should patients and clients choose Wijnland Fertility above other options? Dr Johannes van Waart: Wijnland Fertility is a patient-centered clinic priding itself on supporting and caring for the fertility couple in the broadest sense of fertility care. Wijnland has an excellent track record boasting a success rate of 69% pregnancy rate per IVF cycle in patients younger than 35. We achieve this by using our Embryoscope technology in selecting the best embryo for single embryo transfer in our highly successful program. Wijnland is one of only two clinics in South Africa using this technology, having done so for the past five years. Wijnland also has an established sperm and egg bank available for our patients in need of donor genetics. Our frozen egg live birth rate also competes with world standards. Over and above this Wijnland also has a successful Onco–Fertility program for our newly diagnosed cancer patients in need of fertility preservation. Lloyd: What are the benefits of a couple from the UAE using the services of Wijnland Fertility? Lizanne van Waart: Our success rates at Wijnland are excellent. Patients are treated as individuals and emotionally supported through the complicated process of fertility treatment. Our prices are very competitive internationally. Stellenbosch is a popular travel destination, and there is a lot to explore while on fertility treatment. Lloyd: How would you describe the Wijnland Fertility success rates? Dr Johannes van Waart: Our success rates are competing with the best in the world for all age groups. We pride ourselves in our up to date technology and the competency of our staff. Continued quality control ensures that we consistently achieve good results. 56

Lloyd: What is provided to a visitor from the UAE to make their visit a positive experience? Dr Johannes van Waart: Becoming part of our Wijnland family and allowing us to walk the path of fertility with our patients ensures a positive experience. Staying in the student town of Stellenbosch in the heart of the South African Winelands creates a homely atmosphere that augments the friendliness of our staff. Lloyd: How does your technology compare to the best in the world? Dr Johannes van Waart: Our world-class technology (including the Embryoscope) compares to the very best in the world. This along with our well-trained staff contributes to our success rates. Lloyd: How big a factor is the cost advantage of foreigners seeking fertility treatment locally? Lizanne van Waart: The exchange rate is very favourable for international patients, and they will probably be able to receive fertility treatment for just more than half the price of an IVF cycle in other countries. Lloyd: How long would a visitor from the UAE need to visit Wijnland to optimise their stay and treatment? Lizanne van Waart: There are two options: 1. Three weeks stay in South Africa (Patients will travel once): • Arrive at our clinic a couple of days before your menstrual cycle is due. • Do all investigative blood tests and scans at our clinic. • Commence medication on Day 3 of your period. 2. Two (2) weeks stay in South Africa: (Patients travel twice to South Africa) • Fly to South Africa for the initial consultation or if there are other pathologies (for example a hysteroscopy for removal of a polyp, or a laparoscopic removal of a fibroid) that needs to be attended to before an IVF cycle is started. • You will obtain an individualised treatment plan, receive fertility medication and blood test results, and then return home. • Await Day 1 of your period (the start of the treatment cycle), On day 2 of your cycle, a series of blood tests needs to be done. Day 3 a transvaginal ultrasound is done. Medication is started on Day 3, provided that your blood tests as mentioned above and scan are normal. • Arrive at the clinic on Day 7 Lloyd: Thank you Johannes and Lizanne. Many people are coming from around the globe to South Africa to combine a holiday trip with their IVF treatment. With some very impressive IVF success rates, fertility treatment is an increasingly popular option. The single most significant factor that drives people to seek infertility treatment on an international level is the cost. The price of fertility treatment in South Africa can be less than half the cost of similar treatment in your home country. The team at Wijnland Fertility stands ready to welcome you to Stellenbosch.

The Van Waart family’s interest in the field of fertility started in 1993, when Lizanne and Johannes went through three years of fertility treatment before conceiving their second son by a GIFT procedure. But first they experienced about three miscarriages in the years before fertility treatment. Dr Johannes van Waart started fertility treatment in his private practice in 2001, after finishing specialist training as an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at the medical school of Stellenbosch University. In 2004 he completed his post-specialist fellowship in Reproductive Biology and Menopause under Prof Thinus F. Kruger (a world-renowned fertility specialist) and Prof Ernst Sonnendecker (a well-known menopause expert). Furthermore, he completed additional training in Laparoscopic Surgery in France in 2007. Wijnland has invested wisely in their intellectual property, giving their patients exposure to exceptionally trained staff who are committed to upholding and striving to improve international standards and success rates. Furthermore, they have acquired state of the art equipment, amongst others the now well-recognised EmbryoscopeTM, that allows laboratory staff to optimise embryo development and success rates. Lizanne van Waart completed her Master‘s degree in Psychological Counselling regarding fertility at Stellenbosch University, while providing psychosocial guidance for fertility patients at the clinic. Furthermore, she is actively involved in the IICO (International Infertility Counselling Organisation). 60

WHERE IT ALL STARTED The Van Waart family’s interest in the field of fertility started in 1993, when Lizanne and Johannes went through three years of fertility treatment before conceiving their second son by a GIFT procedure. But first they experienced three miscarriages in the years before fertility treatment. An Obstetrician and Gynaecologist specialising in infertility, Dr Johannes Van Waart, has provided fertility treatment to patients since 2001 and is considered a leader in his field. After finishing specialist training as an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at the medical school of Stellenbosch University Dr Van Waart completed his post-specialist fellowship in Reproductive Biology and Menopause Furthermore, he completed additional training in Laparoscopic Surgery in France in 2007. Lizanne van Waart has an interest in psychology and a passion for supporting the fertility patient. Lizanne van Waart completed her master’s degree in Psychological the topic focussing on fertility counselling at Stellenbosch University, while providing psychosocial guidance for fertility patients at the clinic. Lizanne continued to develop her understanding of infertility by travelling globally as both a speaker and by working with experts to create a sound emotional and ethical basis for counselling around donor families. Together with their formidable team, the Van Waarts are at the forefront of medical and psychological support for donors. ETHOS Wijnland has invested wisely in their intellectual property, giving their patients exposure to exceptionally trained staff who are committed to upholding and striving to improve international standards and success rates. We believe that best people and best practice are a winning combination and we put this ahead of all our goals. We believe that our success rates speak for themselves and at the core of it all is our ongoing dedication to a patient-centred approach. We welcome our patients with compassion and treat their physical, psychological and social beliefs with care and respect. We believe that biological, psychological, and social factors all play a significant role in your wellbeing. Coupled with a passionate drive for innovative and proven science, you will experience a state-of-the-art laboratory environment and advanced technologies to provide you with the best possible care in assisted reproduction. PATIENT CENTERED APPROACH Big decisions should happen in caring, capable environments. We are here to offer our expertise and honest advice, considering the long-term well-being of you and your family. Many of the staff in our clinic have walked a path similar to yours and are accepting of your dream of family. Our Patient centred approach here at Wijnland Fertility is what differentiates us. Technically, most of the fertility services are provided by numerous clinics, but they are offered in isolation. Wijnland Fertility chooses to use a biopsychosocial model (BPS) which is a general model of approach stating that biological, psychological (thoughts, emotions and behaviours) and social (socio-economical, environmental and cultural) factors play a significant role in human functioning in the context of disease or illness. We aim to treat patients physically, psychosocially and socially in a warm welcoming environment. For us it is not just about success rates, but rather the total experience. There is more info of our clinic on our website as well as a booklet on the website. Services offered at our clinic are as followed: Times intercourse, Artificial insemination of husband sperm, Artificial insemination of donor sperm, IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation), ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection, IMSI (Intracytoplasmic morphologically selected sperm injection) FET frozen embryo transfer, Embryo vitrification, Sperm freezing, testis biopsy’s. We also do ovarian freezing and ova freezing for cancer patients. Another service we offer is social egg freezing program ( Social freezing is a new opportunity for women to lengthen their fertility period.) We are very proficient in egg freezing and thawing. A lot of woman have not met their future partners or would like to have children at a later stage in life. Patient in their 30s then freeze their eggs for future use as the quality of eggs deteriorates with age and chances of pregnancy drops with age. We also have a donor ova and sperm bank for patients with no sperm or low ovarian reserve. I will ask Liesl Le Roux who does our marketing to send you some photos of the clinic.

Fertility Preservation at Wijnland Fertility
OVARIAN TISSUE FREEZING
10 YEARS
Experience in OTF
MORE THAN 10 OVARIAN TISSUES
successfully frozen to date
Only option that
PRESERVES OVARIAN FUNCTION Clinically important for
YOUNG NEWLY DIAGNOSED FEMALE CANCER PATIENTS
Wijnland Fertility has been offering this novel technique to cancer patients since 2008. We have successfully frozen more than 10 patients’ ovarian tissue (since then in an ongoing series). This technique is specifically clinically important for young newly diagnosed female cancer patients this includes (estrogen sensitive tumors and where the ovaries are to be removed to prevent future tumor growth). Tissue freezing is also an option in other types of cancers and individual patient scenarios. Examples are: • Girls younger than 18 years old, where ovarian stimulation to retrieve oocytes is not recommended • Hodgkin’s lymphoma • Breast cancer • Low ovarian reserve - for future extension of ovarian function • Blood cancer • Some advanced cancer stage – (If no time for ovarian stimulation) Tissue freezing can be used as an additional preservation treatment to expand the number of oocytes preserved. Numbers
of >1000’s pre-mature oocytes in their dormant state are frozen. This mode of fertility preservation is the only option that also preserves ovarian function. Upon transplantation of the tissue to the ovarian site, the natural female hormones can return and continue to function normally for several years. This time frame is dependent on the initial ovarian reserve. This is also the only option that allows for spontaneous ovulation and chances of natural conception. All other methods require current and future ART/IVF treatment to be able to conceive. In some cases, depending on the cancer treatment, some ovarian function may return (even if no preservation techniques are used), sometimes only temporarily, but this returnof function cannot be predicted accurately. Ovarian tissue freezing therefore may have additional advantages to consider which is important during the crucial decisionmaking time before starting chemotherapy. Our Fertility team will provide full guidance in this regard.
OOCYTE VITRIFICATION Running a successful vitrification program
SINCE 2014
Vitrified more than
800 OOCYTES Pregnancy rate of
67%
over the past
three years
Wijnland Fertility has been running a successful oocyte vitrification program since 2014. Our egg bank currently consists of more than 300 oocytes. Over the 4 years, we have vitrified more than 800 oocytes. We have thawed about 300 (282) oocytes and the survival rate has gradually improved up to the current average of 94% in 2018 (thawed 69 oocytes), with a fertilization rate of 70% and achieving an average pregnancy rate of 67% during the past 3 years. These rates show that we have accomplished our goal of achieving pregnancies at Wijnland (in line with international standards), frozen eggs being equal to fresh eggs and comparable to international standards.
Indications for oocyte preservation include: • Hodgkin’s lymphoma • Egg pooling program for poor responders or poor ovarian reserve • Male infection • Male cannot produce sperm on day of aspiration • Social / future reasons (social freezing) • Breast cancer • Too few sperm for all oocytes retrieved • Cervical cancer

Dr Huskisson has established a strong client base through his thorough and personal approach to every patient. After graduating from the University of Stellenbosch, Dr Huskisson went on to practice medicine in Somerset West and the Strand. It was after his relocation to the United Kingdom, where he became a member of the Joint Committee of General Practitioners; that he made his post-graduate transition from pure medicine to aesthetics. He has set a high standard in aesthetics and thus provides training to medical practitioners in Botox and Dermal Fillers. Dr Huskisson has been acknowledged as a front- runner in his field by being one of 13 specialist doctors from South Africa who gets invited to Monaco each year for an all expenses paid trip to the World Aesthetics and Medicines Congress. EVERY DROP COUNTS AT CAPE TOWN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
Cape Town International Airport has a robust plan in place to ensure that the airport continues to operate in the event of Day Zero. Since May last year the airport instituted a special committee to focus on water plans and together with the broader fraternity have been working to ensure an appropriate response to the water situation. The airport’s water wise plan is focussed on three key areas which are retaining its license to operate the aerodrome, to reduce water consumption and the augmentation of municipal supply. To date the airport has managed to reduce its consumption by 40% as compared to last year and aims to reduce that even further so that its water consumption is below 50%. Various water augmentation initiatives will allow the airport over the next number of months to become independent of municipal supply. This is achieved, amongst other, through access to ground water and the harvesting of rain water. Projects are currently underway to install and commission the required infrastructure. Cape Town International Airport’s consolidated plans provide sufficient capacity to enable the airport to operate on Day Zero and beyond, should it materialise. CAPE TOWN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT CONSTANTLY AIMS FOR NEW RECORDS By the end of 2017, Cape Town International Airport (CTIA) was declared the best airport in Africa although having some good competitors at the finish line. This award and recognition was achieved by an extraordinary team of professionals, led by Deon Cloete (GM), that bears in mind that CTIA is not only a visitor’s first impression, but it is also the strength and the founding phase for the growth of the entire tourism industry of Cape Town and its surrounds. Working hand in hand with relevant stakeholders at both national and local government levels, CTIA is looking to break their own records in the future. After stepping up from the 10 Million arrivals mark, the team recently received final approval to realign its main runway, with a R3.8 billion investment in order to enable further growth. It is also planned to make changes to both the international and domestic terminals and build a luggage transit facility The Cape Town Air Access Partnership with ACSA, WESGRO and all tiers of government already enabled the opening of 13 new routes and 14 route expansions for direct flights to Cape Town, resulting in a growth of 800 000 new inbound seats, most of them being taken by visitors. Next on the plate is securing a viable direct route from North America, preferably from New York, with the intention that this already big source market to the tourism industry will keep expanding and increase benefits in the region. The current terminal services travelers on two levels. The departure level provides local and international travelers with refreshments, shopping and paid lounge facilities. The arrivals level offers all equipping necessities and is designed to provide more space for luggage collection and a bigger meeters and greeters area. In addition to the availability of most car rental companies outside the terminal and authorized taxi operators, since 2010, travelers are making use of the MyCiti bus service, having and using the direct route between CTIA and the city center. As they hold the record of almost 90% on time performance within Africa, the management team aims to keep the success and reputation high in the future too. The new runway will create 50% more capacity, i.e. an increase from 30 flights per hour to 45. It also plans to have a much smaller noise footprint for the neighbouring communities, while giving optimum efficiency and safety to aircrafts and pilots. As a business, the airport is aware of their responsibility to make a meaningful socio-economic contribution into the lives of their surrounding communities. The management of airports are of utmost importance, but they are also committed to making a positive and lasting impact in the lives of their neighbours. The airport’s growth is the catalyst to doing just that. They have many projects running in communities, one being a skills development programme where people in communities are provided with a skill to build their own houses. The master plan for the changes and growth of the CTIA is a corner stone for economic prosperity of the tourism and the importing industries for years to come. 74
