CONTENTS The airport shuttle of MyCiTi service is currently running between the Civic Centre Station in central Cape Town and the Airport Station, which is outside the arrivals terminal at Cape Town International Airport. The bus departs every 20 minutes from both stations, and tickets are on sale at the kiosks inside. The trip takes about the same time, or slighty less, than in a prive car, as follows: - Morning peak (direction City): about 20-30 minutes - Afternoon peak (direction Airpot): about 45-55 minutes - Other times of the day or in opposite directioon to peak hour congestion: about 15-20 minutes (sbuject to delays). This year book lovers will once more flock to Franschhoek in the third weekend of May and hurry from venue to venue through village streets which buzz with book talk. All the destinations are within a few minutes walk, including the bookshop and booking facilities in the Town Hall and a great range of cafés and restaurants, small hotels, guest houses, interesting shops and more bookshops. With a continuing focus on good accessible writing and diversity, the many Southern African writers on the programme range from renowned to little-known, and the topics vary from biography, history and politics to poetry, literary fiction and love stories. FLF events are informal, often spirited discussions between several writers, with some one-on-one conversations. People in the news like Jonathan Jansen, Max du Preez, Karabo Kgoleng, Justice Malala, Jenny Crwys-Williams, Peter Harris and John Maytham will this year rub shoulders with academics, struggle stalwarts, poets, publishers, journalists and first-time novelists still hoping to make it big. Publishers will again do book launches and hold dinners, and aspiring poets will bring their work to a rousing open mic session. As usual, there will also be performances by Youth Affair, a group of talented youngsters directed by a local rising star of TV soaps, Jeremy Davids, now working on a PhD in Drama. All events are within a short walking distance of the Town Hall (in the village centre) where you will find the Festival Exhibition with a booking office, help desk, village maps, book displays, book sales and a notice board detailing the venues for each event. Parking is available in the Church grounds, around the Town Hall, at the Huguenot Museum, and in side streets. TABLE MOUNTAIN VOTE ‘WORTH R1BN A YEAR’
South Africa could benefit by an estimated US$200million (1.4-billion) a year, equivalent to over $1-billion for the first five years, if Table Mountain is chosen as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature, according to consultancy Grant Thornton – and that’s counting direct economic impact only. A report conducted by Grant Thornton and released on Friday found that tourism to Cape Town would increase by about 20 percent, mostly from international tourists, if Table Mountain were to get the global vote in the New 7 Wonders of Nature competition. Table Mountain is one of 28 finalists in the competition, in which the world’s top natural sites are being whittled down to seven winners in an exercise in global democracy that is expected to draw over a billion participants. The final two-year round of voting to choose the New 7 Wonders of Nature runs through to the final official declaration of the seven winners on 11.11.2011. The increase in tourists that would flow from being one of the seven would, according to Grant Thornton, “generate an additional R1.4-billion in revenue for the year or about R116-million a month, and the expenditure would support around 11 000 employment opportunities in South Africa.” Grant Thornton’s projections are based on a previous campaign, to choose the New 7 (man-made) Wonders of the World, culminating in 2007 with over 100-million votes cast. Grant Thornton found that “measurable” results were seen at sites which made the top seven shortlisted in that campaign. “Visitors to Petra in Jordan increased by 61 percent, and visitors to Christ the Redeemer in Brazil increased by 30 percent.” The man-made New 7 Wonders of the World have “become part of school curriculums all over the world, and if the same happens to the New 7 Wonders of Nature, children from every corner of the globe will be learning about Table Mountain and South Africa as a destination,” the report found. Jean-Paul de la Fuente, director of New7Wonders, said that Grant Thornton’s findings confirmed the

conclusions of an academic study released last year by London-based publisher Pearson (publisher of the Financial Times newspaper) in which the worldwide economic contribution made by the campaign to elect the man-made New 7 Wonders was valued at more than $5-billion. CAPE TOWN AIRPORT THE BEST IN AFRICA Cape Town International Airport has been named the best airport in Africa by the Airports Council International (ACI). The airport won the Best Airport in Africa Award as well as the Best Improved Airport in Africa Award in the ACI’s Airport Service Quality (ASQ) global awards. ASQ is an independent organisation that benchmarks the global airport service industry. The organisation conducts surveys across airports
annually to test the overall passenger experience at airports. This year, over 190 surveys were conducted in over 50 countries. The awards ceremony to acknowledge airports around the world which deliver good customer service will be held in New Delhi in India in April. Staff service excellence “As an airport community, we are exceptionally proud of this award,” Deidre Hendricks, communications manager at the airport, said this week. “Just under a year ago we scooped Best Airport in Africa as well as Best Airport for staff service excellence in the Skytrax International Award, demonstrating that our airport is indeed among the best in the world.” Cape Town International is currently ranked 35th out of 150 in the world. It also ranked high in the areas of parking facilities, value for money, availability of trolleys, and cleanliness of washrooms. Finding one’s way in the airport was a key area of improvement identified. Other winners Other South African airports fared well in the awards too, with Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International being named third best airport and Durban’s King Shaka International fourth best airport in Africa. George Airport on the Western Cape Garden Route was named best regional airport in Africa. Air france to fly non-stop to cape town
Starting on 3 November 2011, Air France will fly to Cape Town in South Africa from Paris-Charles de Gaulle, with 3 weekly frequencies. A city in the south-western corner of South Africa, located on the Atlantic coast, Cape Town is the second largest port, the country’s legislative capital, seat of the South African Parliament and one of the top tourist destinations in South Africa. Flights will be operated by a Boeing 777-200 with a total capacity of 309 seats, equipped with 35 seats in the Business cabin, 24 seats in the Premium Voyageur cabin and 250 seats in the Voyageur cabin. On board, passengers will be able to discover Air France’s new Business Class seat launched last December. The Stellenbosch Wine Route was the first in South Africa and all the estates along the route are within a 12km radius of the town. THE OLD CITY HALL
COMPANY’S GARDEN VISITOR CENTRE
Built in 1905, the old City Hall in Darling Street is a mixture of Italian Renaissance and British colonial architecture. It is located on the Grand Parade to the west of the Castle of Good Hope and is built from honey-colored limestone imported from Bath in England. The 60m/200ft high bell-tower, with a carillon installed in 1923, was modeled on London’s Big Ben. The City Hall was the last major Victorian building to be erected in Cape Town.
The garden was established in 1652, making it one of the oldest gardens in the country. The display in the Visitor’s centre gives a comprehensive overview of the early history of the garden, which is unique in that it is the only example of how two different landscape styles – the Dutch ‘produce garden’ grid pattern and the ‘Victorian Romantic’ grid pattern and the overlaid to produce the garden as it exists today.
The City Hall’s carillon was installed as a WW1 war memorial, with 22 additional bells being added in 1925 with the visit of the Prince of Wales. Magnificent and imposing, the City Hall commemorates Kind Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, with its mosaic floors, marble staircase, stained glass windows and specially designed organ with 3165 pipes.
This brewery was to be sited alongside the new railway line as an advertisement for Castle beer –a sort of early billboard. The Castle Brewery was completed in 1901, designed by New York architect H. The Houses Of Parliament are an architectural wonder. Gallery tickets are available from Room 12. Overseas visitors must present their passports. The parliament building, which also houses the Library of Parliament, is beautiful, with its central dome and Corinthian porticos and pavilions. You can also sit in the public gallery during a parliamentary session. The original designer, Charles Freeman, miscalculated the foundations and was replaced by Henry Greaves, who oversaw the building until completion in 1885. The new House of Assembly was designed by Sir Herbert Baker. A pedestrian walkway, Government Avenue, runs through the Company Gardens and provides easy access to Parliament and other nearby attractions are Greenmarket Square, the Castle of Good Hope and the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront.
