Every week you will find a different menu at the Foodbarn where Franck’s French inspired food is paired meticulously with Nitida’s cool climate, smooth wines. Nitida, situated in the heart of the idyllic Durbanville Wine Valley, is set apart by its cool climate wines from an area unsurpassed in delivering long, slow, ripening conditions because of its surprisingly high altitude and close proximity to the icy Atlantic Ocean. Frank is held in high esteem for food that is beautifully prepared without being pretentious by capturing the natural tastes, smells and textures in every Foodbarn dish. Known for his wonderfully unconventional and adventurous wine pairings, you can expect to try a different menu every week, from smoked bonito slices to warm baby squid salad paired with Nitida Sauvignon Blanc 2011. Alternatively there are escargots or his yellow lentils and coriander spring rolls, which can be enjoyed with Nitida Semillon 2010. Fish lovers can enjoy a variety of different roasted fish dishes every week, which go beautifully with the Bordeaux style white blend, Nitida Coronata 2009. And for the adventurous, try the offal of the day with Nitida Semillon 2010. Meat aficionados can look forward to various slow roasted pork, lamb or rump cutlets weekly to pair with Nitida Cabernet Sauvignon 2009. For your sweet tooth, choose between interesting homemade options such as ice creams, cakes or crepes that change weekly. You can enjoy this food and wine tasting experience from Mondays to Saturdays for lunch or dinner and choose between a 3-course meal at R165, 4-courses at R185 or a 5-course menu at R215. Included in the price, you can watch Frank when he does a cooking demonstration on Wednesday evenings between 18h30 and 19h30 of some of the dishes on his menu. Over and above the paired wines, and on Sundays, Nitida wines are available at very good prices either by the bottle or carafe. These are also available with his a la carte menu.

MYKONOS TAVERNA

Nitida, on the Durbanville Wine Route, is a mere 20 minutes from the Cape Town city centre and is a very central meeting place for friends from the Southern and Northern suburbs and nearby Boland towns. The farm has built an enviable reputation for its cellar door hospitality and award-winning wines, particularly Sauvignon Blanc and offers a combination of unbeatable views, imaginative food and wonderful wines in a unique, friendly environment.

How to book: Obtain tickets, No booking required. Adults: R37,Children (6-17yrs): R10, Under 6 yrs.: Free Venue / Location: Start from Information Desk at Visitor’s Centre, Kirstenbosch NBG Description: The Garden guides offer two daily walks, at 10am and 11am except Sundays. These are general Garden walks aimed at visitors from overseas or from other parts of South Africa. Visitors are given a general view of the Garden or as much as can be fitted into such a short time.

and capable of answering questions from those who want more than just a general walk, always ready to acknowledge ignorance too! Much depends on the age and physical fitness of the visitors - not all can reach the lovely Protea section in the upper reaches of the Garden. People in wheelchairs and parents with prams have to be accommodated too in which case it limits the walk to the lower areas. Contact Details: Contact Alison Tel: 021 799-8686

Places from which to observe these gentle giants include Lamberts Bay on the Cape West Coast, down to Elandsbaai and Saldanha Bay, down to Yzerfontein and Cape Town, around the Peninsula and into False Bay, where whales frolick in the protected waters, on to Bettys Bay and Hermanus, where the Whale Cryer informs on whale sightings and where whales come into the old harbour to calve, then all along the coast to Gansbaai, further down to Cape Agulhas, Struisbaai and Arniston, where whales come into the protected waters, down to De Hoop Nature and Marine Reserve and Witsand, at the mouth of the Breede River, Still Bay - where the Southern Rights enter the placid water to bear their calves, Gouritzmond, Vleesbaai, Dana Bay, Mossel Bay - especially on the St Blaize’s hiking trail, Hartenbos, Great Brak River, Ballot’s Bay, Herold’s Bay, Victoria Bay, Wilderness - especially from Dolphin’s Point on the Kaaiman’s Pass, Sedgefield, Knysna especially from Brenton-on-Sea and Knysna Heads, and Plettenberg Bay, which offers a “whale hotline” and where whales often come in close, especially at Keurbooms River and beaches, as well as Robberg Peninsula.

The walk usually takes two hours, but can be shorter or longer - to suit the visitors’ needs. Tour guides give visitors a resumé of the Garden’s history, from Khoi-San through Dutch and British colonial times to the present day. They explain the physical features of the Garden, the streams and water supply. They explain the importance of the Cape Floristic Region and the reason for it being a World Heritage Site, stressing the biodiversity that makes Kirstenbosch different from the other 6 great botanical gardens of the world. The guides do their best to stay well informed

On a deserted beach somewhere in history, Mary Renault is drinking a beer, when Alexander the Great washes up in front of her. In the ensuing meeting between the writer and her most famous subject, we travel through history and swim across time to see where these two people came from and how they’ve ended up here. In the process we meet Alexander’s life-long lover, Hephaistion and Renault’s lover, Mullard. The play is a delightful story of two very different lives and their unlikely intersection. FAT PIG

Cow. Slob. Pig. How many insults can you hear before you have to stand up and defend the woman you love? Tom faces just that question when he falls for Helen, a bright, funny, sexy young woman who happens to be plus-sized - and then some. Forced to explain his new relationship to his shallow (although shockingly funny) friends, he finally comes to terms with is own preconceptions of the importance of conventional good looks. Neil Labute`s sharply drawn writing not only critiques our slavish adherence to Hollywood ideals of beauty, but also boldly questions our own ability to change what we dislike about ourselves. On Broadway, 6-24 Sep, Tickets R125 from Computicket: 083 915 8000 www.computicket. mobi.

DEFENDING THE CAVEMAN

Alan Committie is back in the record-breaking “date show” that explores the differences - and similarities - between the sexes. Alan keeps this uproarious comedy fresh and funny through his own particularly entertaining personality. This evening of hilarious entertainment tackles the eternal, baffling and seemingly insurmountable differences between men and women. Defending the sometimes primitive behaviour of the modern-day Caveman. Theatre On The Bay, 10 Aug- 10 Sep, Tickets R150 from Computicket: 083 915 8000 www.computicket.mobi.

HATS OFF

A musical revue brimming with catchy tunes, tongue in cheek chemistry and lots of laughter! In Hats Off!, Jonathan Roxmouth (Naledi and Fleur Du Cap award-winning star of Beauty and the Beast, A Handful of Keys, CATS and Grease) and Louis Zurnamer (multi award-nominated maestro of HAIR, Jesus Christ Superstar, CHESS, Beauty and the Beast and CATS) team up to revisit the madcap musical antics of famous British comedy duo, Michael Flanders and Donald Swann. Sharing the stage with nothing but a baby grand piano (in tune, if you are lucky) and their off-beat sense of humour (out of tune, if you aren`t), they explore the many humorous and downright silly songs of Flanders & Swann including the classic “G-nu Song”, intoxicating “Madeira M`Dear” and infectious “Mud, Mud, Glorious Mud Ballad for Piano and Hippo”. Alan Swerdlow and Roxmouth have cleverly adapted some of the material to a South African context and with brilliant insight, sharp wit and impeccable good taste will have the audience in stitches.

TOURISM NEWS Increased business travel for Cape Town Although Cape Town leisure tourism is currently feeling the full effect of the international economic recession, which has placed greater financial pressure on the tourism industry globally, business travel is steadily on the increase locally and will continue to supplement leisure tourism figures until the current cycle turns again in the next two to three years. This according to Bruce Deneys, Sales and Marketing director of Pepper Club Luxury Hotel & Spa in Cape Town, who says that infrastructure improvements such as the expansion of the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) and ongoing upgrades to the city’s Central Business District (CBD) will further boost the city’s global reputation as a competitive business destination and drive increased business traveller figures. Deneys points to a recent feasibility report by economists from the University of Cape Town’s Graduate School of Business that measured the possible impact of the convention centre expansion. “The report revealed that the CTICC’s contribution to national Gross Domestic Product (GDP) alone is expected to increase from R2.3 billion currently to over R5.1 billion per annum.”

Town will eventually become one of the major commercial centres on the African continent. With more and more conferences being planned in the city, hotels located strategically in the heart of the CBD stand to benefit most from the expected business tourism influx,” concludes Deneys. Cape Town marathon to attract Olympic hopefuls The City of Cape Town, in partnership with Western Province Athletics (WPA), has announced that this year’s Cape Town Marathon, on Sunday 25 September, will be used by some of the country’s top runners as one of the official qualifiers for the Olympics in London, in 2012.

Comrades Marathon and Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon. Participants will enjoy a scenic race starting in the city centre’s Adderley Street and on to Rondebosch before looping back via Salt River, the Foreshore, Sea Point Promenade and finishing at Green Point Urban Park where all participants will get a chance to experience this inspiring new facility adjacent to Cape Town Stadium. The fast flat route is expected to attract a quality field of runners from all over South Africa. It provides elite athletes the chance to post a fast marathon time, while the generous eight-hour cut-off allows first-timers and walkers the chance to complete the distance while admiring the mountain, sea and many attractions of Cape Town. City of Cape Town

“We are delighted that the marathon has been selected by the IAAF as an Olympic qualifier as it raises the status of the event and attracts a quality field of runners. Local runners will get the chance to run with some of our top stars and spectators will also be able to watch them in action,” said James Evans, president WPA. The marathon is also a qualifier for the 2012

He explains that affordability is also a significant factor in doing business in Cape Town and is a significant consideration by global companies and organisations when it comes to selecting a conference or business destination. “A recent study by the Economist Intelligence Unit revealed that Cape Town is ranked far outside of the Top 20 most expensive cities in the world, making it an attractive business destination.” In 2008 Cape Town surpassed New York as the most popular convention city for longhaul conferences worldwide. In addition, the CTICC and Cape Town has achieved and maintained an impressive 35th position on the International Convention Centre Association ranking list of international destinations. Johannesburg and Durban are ranked at 128 and 231 respectively. “We envisage that Cape

WHAT WINE ROUTE?

Not sure where to go for a wine route adventure? It all depends on how much time you have and how much of day - or week - you’d like to make of it. For those with very little time, you’ll be happy to know that Cape Town’s CBD presents a host of wine bars that will guide you through a virtual wine tasting of practically any estate you choose. But for those who do have some time...

Constantia Valley

Stellenbosch Wine Route

Franschhoek Wine Route

Constantia Valley is the wine route at the heart of the Mother City (or at least a little to the left of it). This is the oldest wine-growing area in Southern Africa and stretches from Wynberg hill in the north, to the Silvermine mountains (the Tokai area) in the south. The five wine cellars on the route boast a winemaking history dating back to 1685 .

The Stellenbosch Wine Route was the first in South Africa and all the estates along the route are within a 12km radius of the town. It is arguably the country´s most famous, and includes 148 cellars - most of which are open to the public. From Cape Town take the N1 in a northerly direction and turn off at the Exit 39 onto the R304 and follow through into Stellenbosch. Franschhoek was founded over 300 years ago when the French Huguenots settled in the Berg River Valley. The wine route here is comparatively small with only 29 cellars, but what it lacks in wine route variety, it makes up for in quality cuisine and breathtaking scenery. A perfect mini-break destination. Franschhoek is 85km outside of Cape Town.

INSHORE FISHING: Inshore fishing is a great way to catch fish and, as the name suggests, involves fishing close to the shore. This type of fishing is quite popular in Cape Town and with Cape Sea Safaris, you will enjoy a world class experience. Deep Sea Fishing can be enjoyed all year round in Cape Town with Yellowfin tuna usually arriving in large numbers between March and June and again from October to December. These fish can weigh between 50 and 120kg and are found in the deep waters so tuna fishing usually takes a full day. Other species include Longfin tuna, Yellow Tail, Cape Salmon, Swordfish, the odd Marlin and the occasional dorado. To Book Call Cape Sea Safari’s 086 126 6524

WAVE SURFING You can watch this unique surfing event from land on Sentinel Ridge or take a 15-minute boat ride from Hout Bay harbour and experience the awesome power of the ocean firsthand, there are a number of charter companies that operate boat trips all day to Dungeons on the day of the event.

NOORDHOEK: Huge boulders, rounded by wind and water, frame a little sandy bay called “The Hook”. This is a place for surfers. The waves arrive in short sequence and are often several metres high.

KAYAKING One of the most unique places in the world - a penguin colony in suburban Cape Town! And the best way to see it is from the water. We leave from Simon’s Town Waterfront and paddle past the civilian and Naval Harbour and out to Boulder’s Beach. After visiting the penguins we stop on a lovely semi-private beach for refreshments, swimming and snorkelling (we provide the snorkels and bottled drinking water.) Our double kayaks are very stable and perfect for those with no paddling experience. By far our most popular trip. During the whale season from August to October there is a good chance of seeing whales as well. Read an article about seeing whales when paddling here. Occasionally we get really lucky and this is the result. Phone: 082 501 8930 Fax: 021 786 4208 Post: PO Box 223, Simon’s Town, 7995
