END OF YEAR PARTIES CHRISTMAS LUNCHES ANNIVERSARIES CONFERENCES WEDDINGS
letter from the editor Like so many of us, you too are probably one of those busy people, frequently flying between Johannesburg and Cape Town, busy rushing and sorting your work carriage right before your next trip. And with that, there is a thought lingering at the back of your mind, or it settles in just as you take your seat in one of the 6 carriers flying the route: What am I missing? Am I going to find myself wondering what to do at the end of the day, in my hotel room? Why didn’t I take just a few minutes off to check what interesting happenings are around? Well, it’s now in your hands. Whether you’re looking for an opportunity to mix business with pleasure, to extend your trip for some additional leisure, to take the opportunity to actively search for your company’s next conference destination or perhaps your family’s next must stay holiday venue – we are happy to assist. We have included a yearly planner for both major cities, places to explore, activities to get you out of the office, venues to wow you and some of the best wine estates around. Living in a world renowned bucket list destination, being lucky enough to visit numerous times and to explore a different corner with each visit, to try a new winery, bring your loved ones to a gorgeous estate, to celebrate a special occasion at a stunning location you hadn’t thought about, you name it. We hope to make your next domestic trip much more lekker. Health & Prosperity Tovi

60% OF YOUR BODY, 70% OF YOUR WORLD You are most likely to visit one or two beaches over this coming summer. Lying on the beach, walking along the promenade or the coastline, or sipping a drink and enjoying the scenery, we can each do something small to keep it the same or improve it for your next visit. Keeping our oceans from harm is about keeping balance. For hearth, for our beautiful country, for our daily life, for our future. October is National Marine Month and it is the perfect time to show your commitment to protecting our oceans. It also serves to remind us of our marine heritage that is a source of employment and recreational opportunities for all of us. A healthy ocean is very important to all life on earth. Billions of people depend on the ocean for their livelihoods and as a source of food. We depend on the oceans for clean air and most of the oxygen we breathe. You do not need to live next to the ocean to benefit from it. More than 70% of the earth is covered by oceans. This might seem like an inexhaustible resource but unfortunately human impact on the oceans are threatening their sustainability. Humans have overfished, polluted and carelessly abused and destroyed life in the oceans. Destroying our oceans doesn’t only threaten marine habitats and species but also our own health, economy and security.
According to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), 80% of pollution in the ocean comes from land based activities. The plastic items we use and the sewerage we create ends up in our oceans and harm the delicate ecosystems that lives in our waters. Together, we need to create public awareness of the state of our oceans and coastal environments in order to promote sustainable use and conservation for the benefit of present and future generations.
WHAT IS THREATENING OUR OCEANS?
According to the WWF the biggest threat to oceans includes: • Refuse and plastic. This includes plastic bags, balloons, glass bottles, shoes and packaging material that are not disposed of properly. Plastic litter, which decomposes very slowly, is often mistaken for food by marine animals. This litter can also come back to shore, where it pollutes beaches and other coastal habitats. • Untreated sewerage flows • Toxic chemicals from illegal dumping • Fertiliser runoff from farms and lawns is a huge problem for coastal areas as it creates more algae which cuts off the oxygen supply to marine animals • Oil spills, many of which come from run off from drains.
WHAT WE CAN DO TO ENSURE THE HEALTH OF OUR OCEANS • Reduce our plastic consumption. The most frequently collected items during beach clean-ups are made of plastic. Rather purchase reusable shopping bags, water bottles and utensils, which also save you money in the long-term. • Make informed seafood choices. Keep a copy of the sustainable seafood guide with you. This guide indicates which species are green, orange or red according to their vulnerability. - Green means you can buy these species legally, - Orange means that the species is vulnerable or threatened, and - Red means that these species numbers have collapsed and it’s therefore illegal to buy, sell and consume that species. • Get rid of chemicals correctly. Never pour chemicals, pharmaceuticals, oil or paint into the drain or toilet. Check with your municipality’s household hazardous waste programme to properly dispose or recycle chemicals and keep them out of rivers and oceans. • Choose environmentally friendly detergents and household cleaners or make your own. Besides being better for your own health, these products are safer for the environment since what goes down the drain can end up in our oceans. • Find out about the practices of your beachside retreat. Before you stay in a hotel on the coast, ask staff what happens to their sewerage and swimming pool water, and if they source their restaurant fish from sustainable sources. • Find out the source of your food. Buying local, organic food reduces your carbon footprint, supports the local economy and reduces the amount of pesticides and fertilisers that end up, not only in your stomach, but as run-off in rivers and oceans too. • Plant indigenous plant species in your garden. Reducing the amount of grass for your lawn by planting indigenous shrubs and flower beds will provide a better habitat for birds and other wildlife and will require far less water and fertiliser, which can seep into the oceans. • Keep your beach visit clean. When visiting the beach, stay off fragile sand dunes, take your trash with you and don’t disturb or remove plants, birds and wildlife so that others can enjoy these treasures too. Oceans are also the primary producer of moisture in the atmosphere which in turn produces rain and plays a critical role in shaping the socio-economic activities in South Africa and the Western Cape agriculture sector in particular.
WHY SHOULD WE CARE ABOUT OUR OCEANS? Oceans play an important role in our existence on this planet: • • • •
Generates most of the oxygen we breathe Helps feed us Regulates our climate Is the primary producer of moisture to the atmosphere, which leads to rain • Cleans the water we drink, and • Global trade is dominated by sea transport
HOW CAN WE OPTIMISE THESE OPPORTUNITIES? The oceans are a vast natural resource and as a developing country, we need to make use of the ocean’s resources sustainably while considering the following:
• The fishing industry is of great socio-economic importance in the Western Cape. It creates income for small-scale fishermen and provides food and income for subsistence fishing communities. • Larger fishing companies also fish in the surrounding waters of the Western Cape, which contributes to the local economy. The Western Cape also relies on the state of its pristine beaches and coastline to encourage and sustain our flourishing tourism industry. • We need to ensure that fishing doesn’t exploit fish stocks. • We need to make sure that our coastlines are free of pollution. • Find out which species of fish are okay to consume by checking the Southern African Sustainable Seafood Initiative (SASSI) list.
FACTS ABOUT OUR OCEAN South Africa is nestled between 2 different ocean currents: 1. The warm Agulhas current is rich in ocean biodiversity, but doesn’t contain large fish stocks. 2. The cold Benguela current supports large fisheries such as those focused on anchovy and sardine (the small pelagic) and the hake (demersal) stocks. These currents, in addition to the cold southern oceans, are key drivers of South African climate and rainfall conditions.
SOUTH AFRICA’S MARINE BIG 5 Our big 5 land animals (the lion, rhino, elephant, leopard and buffalo) are well known, but do you know which animals are part of our marine big five? The marine big 5 is:
Cape fur seal
African penguin
Humpback whale
Dolphin
Great white shark
THE SOUTH AFRICAN NATIONAL FISH • The galjoen is the national fish of South Africa. • Belongs to a family of fish that can only be found off our coastline. • It is currently endangered due to overfishing.
SOUTH AFRICAN HOPE SPOTS According to the Sustainable Seas Trust (SST), Hope Spots are special conservation areas that are critical to the health of the ocean. Networks of Hope Spots maintain biodiversity, provide a carbon sink, generate life-giving oxygen, preserve critical habitats and allow low-impact activities like ecotourism to thrive. They’re good for the ocean, which means they’re good for us. The article was first published by the Western Cape Government

CARROL BOYES FUNCTIONAL ART HAS DESIGNS ON THE FUTURE
It was with a heavy heart that we learnt earlier this year that the creator, founder and the self-made South African icon, Ms Carrol Boyes, succumbed to an illness. In light of this, we are sharing a message of continuity and future plans from her brothers and her dedicated staff with the intention of carrying Carrol’s name further, reaching her unachieved goals and keeping the fame and reputation on the high bar she set. Change of Management Structure within Carrol Boyes Executive Team The future of iconic South African design company – Carrol Boyes (Pty) Ltd – following the recent passing of the founder, remains assured as key family members, brothers Charles and John Boyes, take on newly expanded roles within the management structure of the company. Having both played pivotal roles in the growth and strategic development of Carrol Boyes (Pty) Ltd over the last 30 years, Charles and John bring a wealth of experience to their new roles of CEO and Executive Board Member respectively.

Charles & John Boyes
Since the company’s inception, the brothers have overseen Carrol Boyes’ production at the company’s manufacturing facility, located on the family farm in Tzaneen in the Limpopo province. Moving forward, the restructuring will see the pair execute greater involvement in day-to-day running of the business, management responsibilities and spearheading international growth and expansion opportunities. The decision to keep the company family run is one that aligns fully with the vision of Carrol Boyes. The move ensures that the company will remain committed to the ongoing production of the exceptional design and craftmanship for which the brand is recognized both locally and abroad. The brothers will continue to uphold the fundamental social upliftment and community empowerment imperatives that have guided the business development of Carrol Boyes.
Charles states: “We are incredibly proud of this company, which has delivered on outstanding design for over 30 years. The fact that we are able to nurture South African artistic talent whilst also contributing to the betterment of both individuals and society at a grassroots level serves as a constant motivation for us, and will continue to inspire us as we move forward into a new phase for the company.”
Carrol has ensured a wealth of ideas and a rich library of new designs just waiting to be executed, which will carry the brand years into the future. In addition, the design team continues to be led by Madeleine Morgan, and remains responsible for the creation of strong, sustainable relationships with suppliers along with close involvement in internal initiatives. Having worked alongside Carrol for fourteen years, Morgan is rooted in the design ethos that sets Carrol Boyes apart and which has led to its success as an exemplar of outstanding South African design.
The Carrol Boyes ranges of homeware, gifting, chocolate and wine products have a commercial presence throughout South Africa – there are 25 dedicated stores and an e-commerce site. Internationally, the brand can be found in large department stores in the US and Australia and is listed by many stockists all over the world. Charles concludes, “We are focused on looking ahead on what is sure to be an exciting next chapter. It is our belief that everyone at the company has the opportunity to play an important role in the continued success of our company, and we, together with her loyal staff complement, will strive to honour the incredible legacy that Carrol has left behind.” Madi Grey - Head of the design team Special Venues 2019/20 l
