Hello Life Magazine - Issue 3
hello from Megan Hello ladies! Welcome to Hello Life Magazine's May edition! This month has been so full of amazing things I don't even know where to begin! We launched Hello Life Academy this month and we've been having so much fun interviewing some seriously amazing ladies already! Stay tuned for more about these incredible entrepreneurs and their businesses in upcoming editions! Here at Hello Life this month we also launched our podcast series, which was just approved for iTunes in time for my birthday! There are so so many reasons to be excited about May and to celebrate ourselves and each other- so CHEERS ladies!!! While I love to party- I think it is also important to talk about how I got here. That's why our theme for May's edition is ALL IN. Being an entrepreneur means committing yourself, your loved ones and everyone else you influence to your hopes, dreams, and ultimately to your business. Going ALL IN should not have to mean that you are committing yourself 150% until you either a) succeed, or b) burn out in a giant blaze of fire... To me ALL IN means having the support you need, setting boundaries in all aspects of your work/life, and working hard to make those dreams come true. I don't recommend dipping your toe in the swimming pool to get used to the entrepreneurship pool- you'll never get used to the water that way and by the time you are fully immersed everyone else will already be hogging the pool noodles. Dive in ladies- immerse in your business and go ALL IN because life does not guarantee you any second chances! What I have learned, though, is that you should surround yourself with a community of lifeguards to keep you afloat during rough waters! Your community is there to help and support you, so before you go ALL IN start working to get that network in place! If you can’t find a community to be part of- in all seriousness create your own! Just like Rome wasn’t built in a day, it takes time to build a community. If we are talking about online or offline communities both require trust & loyalty. The first step is to TAKE action and create a community. Numbers don’t matter- if you have 2 people in your community and it's strong then perfect! Whether your community has 2 or 2000 people- try not to focus on the numbers, but rather the quality. To build my community I had to focus on being myself (this helps find the people you can truly connect with) and also on asking questions. Selling does not necessarily help you build a community, but providing value does and genuinely caring about your customers does! Absolutely everyone wants to be a part of something- once they find something they believe in and a community they love, they will stay in that community! Support can come from so many different places, including family, friends, entrepreneurs and even from people that you pay! While support is critical on so many different levels, it is really important to find some support from someone who is not directly tied to your business and not involved in the decisionmaking. I love having a personal trainer, a massage therapist, a coach for my emotions- I hire a lot of my support, trust me, it's worth it. I have tried in the past to use friends but the boundaries are hard to create and to maintain. There are times in business when things flow and everything seems to be on this amazing path; then other times when you feel overwhelmed. If I would not have had the support I had at times I would’ve thrown in the towel- or quit. It is great to have people who can remind you of why you started, remind you of vision you had in the first place and basically remind you not to quit when things feel 'bad'. When you feel like you have support in your business you feel like you can accomplish almost anything. Try to remember that successful people attract what they are putting out, happiness attracts happiness, and support attracts support! It is vital to give back to your community and not just draw from it- without giving back you’re not really part of your own community. To bring everything full circle, I’d like to thank-you all for being part of my community and for supporting Hello Life! I am so happy to say that I am ALL IN to you, this magazine, my new podcast, Hello Life Studio, and Hello Life Academy- and I hope that some of you will consider joining the Academy so that I can help you go ALL IN too and so that you can access my amazing support network and community. Shelley Buckley president
about your biz Are people at the heart of your business? I am Shelley Buckley, Entrepreneur, SuperMom and President of SLB Staffing Bureau- we’re here to help with all your staffing needs so that you can focus on the important things, like building your business and achieving your dreams! SLB Staffing Bureau Recruiters are passionate and sincere about HR & Recruitment; we really care about you and your career development. We have successfully placed candidates and worked together with companies from many different industry sectors across the world. We are here to help and support you every step of the way, whatever stage you are at in your chosen profession.
how a staffing bureau was born In January 2012, I was 7 months pregnant with our 4th child and was working full time at the City of Calgary when, all of a sudden, my world changed. Our young son was involved in a very traumatic accident, resulting in lengthy hospital stays, surgeries and a myriad of other challenges. One week after his accident, I was laid off from my City position. I went from working full time, working after hours for functions, juggling work, our children, their school, the housework… To worrying about being a heavily pregnant career-minded individual who was now without a job, amongst other things… Life is full of irony. Fortunately I’m pretty resilient it seems… We all are once you get over that initial shock and don’t resist change. In the first quarter of 2012 our son was born and our other son made a steady recovery. I was resourceful and provided child care to friends and local families so I could continue contributing to my family’s income. The second quarter of 2012 saw a further change for me when I was recommended to a business to assist with their HR & Recruiting Outsourcing. As my initial consulting spiraled into more work and further referrals throughout 2012 and 2013, my staffing bureau was born.
being a MOM and an entrepreneur
I'm pretty resilient it seems- we all are once you get over that initial shock and don’t resist change.
Yes it can be done! I work from home, I still cook, I still clean, I have 4 active boys and I run a successful business. Now some days it’s not easy- it’s really hard actually when you have a 4 year old climbing over you while you type an email, its hard sitting at your desk surrounded by lego and books, it’s hard while you juggle your priorities. You are even harder on yourself- your expectations are high and you expect that you should be able to do everything… Time has taught me that it is ok not to do everything.

SLB Staffing Bureau for employers and employees
how your biz took off In 2014, I was approached by a large company in regards to supporting them with their Permanent, Temporary and Contingency Contractor staffing needs. SLB purchased a CRM, had our website created (www.staffingbureau.ca) and had business cards & marketing material printed. By then end of year two we had doubled our revenue.
Moving into the first quarter of 2015, we employed a further 2 recruiters totaling 3 to help with our work load. We signed sole agreements with companies, we represented companies at local and international trade shows and we became their regular onsite Recruiting & HR providers. The second quarter of 2015 saw a further 2 recruiters joining us; now our team totals 5 experienced recruiters with a cumulative knowledge of +50 years in the industry. Our business is off to a healthy start for 2016, having excelled our current company quarterly budget by 25%. This has only been made possible by the passionate, dedicated, supportive and experienced recruiters that I have the pleasure of working with and by our loyal customers, many of whom have become my friends. We will continue to do what we do best and to build relationships into the future; our aim is to see further candidates and companies suitably matched while maintaining our 100% recorded accuracy to date
“Remember: entrepreneurs jump off the cliff, but they build a parachute on the way down.” Unknown
why you love your job What is fantastic… is being able to take your children to and from school, being home with them when they are sick, being able to attend school functions, being able to fulfill my own passion and being able to do what I love and what I know I’m supposed to be doing with my life. I am hitting all my career goals and saying HELLO to my life! Stop questioning yourself- go all in!
stop questionning yourself be all in To all of you aspiring entrepreneurs, know that at first, I would question myself constantly. Was I making the right choices? Was all of this real? Living the dream happens to other people, not me, right? I wondered if I should give up and work for someone else; it would make my life much easier and much less stressful after all, wouldn’t it? But I’ve learnt to trust in myself, to believe in my skills and abilities and most of all, to know that I am in control of my future and happiness. One thing that I am reminded of by my best friend and partner is: “Remember: entrepreneurs jump off the cliff, but they build a parachute on the way down.”

nurse boss
tell us about your biz Healthy Nurse by Design is a consulting and coaching company that helps nurses find a better way to live and work. Many of my clients come to me because they are entering a life transition phase or feel 'stuck' with their current situation- they aren’t happy to go to work anymore and they are on the verge of coming undone. They know something has to change but they have no idea how to make a change. I help nurses get clairty on what it is they want, and on what their gifts are…. I help them align their gifts and passions to share them with the world. Nurses have an endless supply of gifts, talents and passions! Every day we see nurses creating, inventing, solving problems, healing, soothing, and caring; and it does not stop there! More and more nurses are sharing their gifts through entrepreneurship, writing stories, creating blogs and beyond! Nurses are the perfect business owners- they have all the tools that they need to run a business, and they are used to giving 110%. I help them learn to keep giving but also how to receive life's many gifts….
what are the first steps to getting clarity A lot of people have a desire to have a certain job, or busines- but deep down they have a belief that they aren’t worthy or simply don’t deserve it… I teach them they are in fact creators. Once they match their beliefs about themselves and their worth everything lines up and everything becomes possible. During our sessions we discuss Signature companions, flow and creativity, movement and stillness, nutrition, and so much more to bring nurses back to health of mind and body! I help my clients remember that they need to dust off their light and let it shine! Clarity and alignment happen naturally throughout this process!
have you ever wanted to quit
Of course! I often ask myself, 'What the heck am I doing?” It's usually in that very moment when the breakthroughs happen! You know, when you want to just die and give up, but you keep going... If everything was easy- everyone would be doing it!!!
how excited are you to help nurses Dude — this is my gift!!! I help nurses remember their own gifts!!! I was meant to share my gift and I am so excited to help as many nurses as I can this year! I want everyone to know that their ideas are meant to be shared too!

Stylist
Author, Speaker, Radio Show Host and Nationally-Recognized Image & Wardrobe Consultant- Mallory Sills is an expert on Image and Style. Founder and Lead Consultant for Image Success by Mallory, she is dedicated to helping women create an image that tells their personal story and dress with their heart. Through her one-on-one consulting work, Mallory goes into closets around the country to teach clients of all shapes and sizes to love their bodies and their wardrobe by developing a unique, timeless wardrobe that gives them increased confidence and credibility. Mallory presents styling techniques as a catalyst for personal growth and achievement.
how did your business begin When I was really little I loved clothes! I grew up with great body image and great self esteem because I found my voice through clothes. When I looked good (through great clothes) I found that I felt good and the business idea sprang from there. I remember growing up when my Mom asked me to pick between 2 different outfits- if the outfits didn't feel like me I wouldn't leave house until I was wearing something that felt like me, I have always found clothes and styling to be my own creative outlet.
where does you inspiration come from
Don't let style intimidate you, buy things that feel good; take over the world in what you are wearing. Mallory
I like to ask clients a lot of questions- some of them will say, "I can't wear what you wear" so I need to find out what they WANT to wear. I am a big believer that clothes are representative of who we are as individuals, what our hobbies are, what our families are like, and are what helps make us unique. I also interned at a fashion magazine in college which gave me a lot of ideas and styling inspiration. I try to put myself into my clients' shoes as much as I can, to find that sate of mind about who they are and what resonates with them. I need to really KNOW my clients so that I can figure out what will look great on them. The most important thing for me is for my clients to know who they are, to feel genuine and to learn what they want their style to look like. I am less about trendy, more about being authentic to who my clients are..
your next 6 months I want to expand my business and focus on in-person sessions as well as virtual sessions. I am really excited to focus on growing my virtual business so that I can help people find their inner sparkle! My goal is to help as many people as I can through videos, podcasts, and my online community; hopefully in 6 months' time i will be helping tripple the volume of people through my virtual business.

Academy Q

with megan lockhart Why did you start the Hello Life Academy
what types of things will you teach at the Academy
I have always dreamed of having a place to go where I could focus on my work, free from the distractions of daily life, and supercharge my business through the help and support of a kick-ass team of experts. I have tried to schedule time in my life for me, for my business, but let’s face it- sometimes the loudest voice gets the most attention (and trust me, once my kids get started there is no stopping until they get some Mom time).
OMG where to begin- the Academy is everything that you need to start, plan, promote, manage and grow your business. Seriously, we provide everything for you except for the business idea and the hard work. I like to think about the Academy as a business-in-a-box; our graduates will leave with their own complete business and they also will get support for their entire first year.
One day I realized that if I can dream it, it can happen. After so many nights of staying up working late after my kids went to bed, I realized that I could find a way to get away for a few days; Not only that, I realized that I could find a way to help others in the process. Hello Life Academy is my dream- it is the answer that all of us need as entrepreneurs, even if we are still trying to figure out the question. Being an entrepreneur can get very lonely. If you are successful, it is easy to feel isolated at the top; and if you are still struggling to make it, you will spend each and every night with your constant companions fear and doubt. The Academy is here to help you combat that loneliness, here to help you fight fear and doubt, here to give you the tools you need to succeed at something you love, and here to get you ready to go ALL IN on that business you’ve always dreamed of doing.
Here are just a few of the things you’ll learn at Hello Life Academy (check out our website for even more): How to build real relationships and how keep them, including tools and tips for building your community and maintaining that network; How to brand your business and how to maximize your website’s potential; How to use sales funnels that work online as well as how to host and run your online program (like really how to use the back end); How to build and find your target market, including what action steps to take to get you there and how to get them to sign up; How social media works and how to use group strategies; How and why to build testimonials; How to use professional photos and makeup to your best advantage; How to record your audios and videos, and we’ll really make some for you to use!
will there be work and play
who should attend The academy is designed for coaches who want to take their business from vision to full time. Life coaches, relationship coaches and all coaching types are welcome. The Academy is also open to women who have an idea for an online program but who have not yet made the transition into entrepreneurship. Even if you already have a business, it is important to keep evolving, to keep challenging yourself and to keep growing your business. The Academy can help keep your mind sharp and keep your heart on fireyour business is ready for the next step!
Oh mother, I have intense hours and days planned! But of course if you know me I'm all about the manis, pedis and wine. I want you to work your butt off and then get a little pampered. I want our dinners to be full of business talk and in all seriousness this academy is not for someone who wants to lie on the beach sipping margaritas. It's for the coach who wants to come... work hard... reset and head home with their business mapped out for the next year.
where is this year's Academy being held The luxurious and secluded Emerald Lake Lodge in Canada! Check out our feature in this month’s magazine for some real inspiration- my socks are blown off just thinking about how beautiful this place is.

michelle macchia health coach about your biz I am a Health Coach from New Jersey. I work with busy men and women who want to release their excess weight, reduce their sugar cravings and learn to be themselves again! I love to help recreate balance in all areas of theirl ives. Most of my clients are really wonderful, busy people who are craving a change but they have reached a turning point where they no longer know what that change looks like. They know that they want to be healthy, but they are also real people. I’m real with my expectations and my clients; I eat pizza & drink margaritas too! You don’t have to be healthy 100% of the time.
what is your inspiration My father became really sick with diabetes about 10 years ago. When he passed away from diabetes and the associated heart and kidney problems, I knew that I wanted to do something to help other people avoid the same fate. One of my biggest fears as a coach is not helping someone- I take my business very seriously!
megan's notes what have you learned in 2 years as a coach
Check out Michelle's online recipes for great meal ideas, like morning kasha, and also for delicious snakcs (coconut date cookies, so yummy)!
Honestly I learn something new every day... I’ve learnt so much! One of my biggest takeaways has been learning how to talk to people. For anyone else who is considering becoming a health coach, with all the experience I have now I wish that I could go back and tell myself, "Brace yourself, there's a lot of stuff going to happen... go with it... go with the flow and you will get to where you need to be!"
how do you create your content I take inspiration from a lot of different places. I do a lot of meditation, watch utube, and I also take a few walks a day. My dog Rusty helps me get off my butt! It really helps me focus when I get away from 'things'.

makeup with jamie-lee LETTING YOUR INNER BEAUTY SHINE THROUGH
I'm sure we've all heard this saying, "Let your inner beauty shine through". But what does that really mean and what can we learn from this? Let me start here... for years I struggled with the complex that people in the beauty industry or just people who wear makeup can get. "You're so vain!", "Why do you HAVE to wear makeup?", "You're just covering up to hide something." This gets my blood boiling. I think it's fair to say we all have our passions, things we love to do, routines we love to keep up. What if doing our makeup is one of those things. What if we love to do our makeup and in turn, it makes us feel beautiful. If you found a dress that fit you perfect, it was beautiful and mostly you felt beautiful in it, would you wear it or would you think you're vain? No. The answer is no. You wear it because you love the way it makes you feel. Just like makeup, you wear it because it makes you feel beautiful. And on the other side of the token, if you don't like to wear makeup, you like to have your hair as no maintenance, that is also ok and beautiful. It's beautiful because it makes you feel beautiful. Do whatever it is that makes you happy and makes you feel pure joy. I am a Makeup Artist and soon to be a full-service Hairstylist so it is my job to put makeup on my clients but it's not just about makeup. I have had clients who sit in my chair and tell me how they feel unattractive or they don't think they have any beautiful qualities about themselves. Then to have them in tears of pure joy when I'm done doing their makeup as they can't believe their full potential.... that is exactly why I do what I do, to bring out their inner beauty from within to the outside. I see BEAUTY in every single person that sits in my chair. Whether it's their amazing personality, their eyes or their tender heart that is what shines through on a person. Makeup and hair is just a bonus and it can be an outward reflection on how you feel on the inside. If you can, I would love for each of you to do this. Sit in front of a mirror for 5 minutes. Stare at your beautiful face. Really look at yourself, look into your eyes and tell yourself one thing that is beautiful on the inside and one thing that is beautiful on the outside. Start loving yourself fully. Life is way to short to not fully love and embrace who we are and what we have. We may as well start loving ourselves and working with it rather than pushing it away. I leave you with this. Nothing shines more bright than a beautiful heart. And if your heart is shining, it will radiate on the outside. Much love and a great big hug. Jamie-Lee xo

ALL IN Reads with EDITOR SUZY O'DONNELL Only have time for a ½ glass of wine? Read chapters of Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead by Sheryl Sandberg.
why you'll want to sit at the table To put it midly, Sheryl Sandberg's business resume alone is reason enough to read this book. Any aspiring female entrepreneur should spend some time gleaning as many tips as possible from Lean In- it will challenge the way you think about yourself and about other women around you! Sheryl invites us to 'sit at the table' whether it be in the workforce or elsewhere in life. There is nothing to be gained by showing up and sitting quietly on the sidelines- one must actually participate in a discussion. Her vision of a world where internal and external obstalces no longer dictate our choices and our accomplishments certainly intrigued me enough to pull up a chair.
what I loved
Each one of these chapters had something interesting to offer. Here are some of my favourites: What Would You Do If You Weren't Afraid? It is so easy to get caught up in doing something practical, because we need to pay our bills, because proper women do not do 'that sort of thing' or because of a million other reasons- that is is sometimes difficult to follow our hearts. I love this question because if it's an instant dream-builder, and because sometimes I like doing the things which make me afraid. Make Your Partner A Real Partner This month Hello Life Magazine talks a lot about support and community. What could you accomplish with the right partner? Life is a balancing act, and finding the right person can really give you the stability that you need to succeed. It is simply not enough for women to sit at the business tablethe men must also sit at the kitchen table. Success and Likeability Success has its price, and unfortunately women are our own worst enemies when it comes to sacrificing success for likeability and vice versa. Female leaders are judged much more critically than their male counterparts when it comes to 'assertiveness'; if you are not kind they hate you, but if you are kind they'll walk all over you. This book is an eye-opener on how we treat other women and how we need to start changing the conversation.

Do you have time for the full bottle of wine? Read: ALL IN: You, Your Business, Your Life by Arlene Dickinson.
what makes arlene so amazing Arlene Dickinson got involved with her first business at the age of 31- while most of her counterparts were attending private school, Arlene was raising kids on her own and struggling to fit into the conventional workforce. She started her first business with sheer will and determination and has built a wildly successful empire.
are you ready to ride a rollarcoaster blindfolded Arlene describes entrepreneurship as a rollar coaster- it is impossible to predict the twist and turns even at the best of times let alone at the worst of times. Despite her successes, Arlene offers a tough look into what it ACTUALLY takes to follow your dreams and how hard it is to make it. Whether it be missing functions such as trips with girl friends and family dinners parties, or mortgaging everything you own to make payroll, All In talks candidly about real life entrepreneurs and the sacrifices they make to stay on track. The takeaway? Success is possible if you are willing to persevere. Being All In is a state-of-being- the ride is not worth it if you only get halfway!
the advice paradow There is an art to learning when to take advice and when to leave it. Peope who are drawn to entrepreneurship are often at a loss to explain why, as their own boss, they are constantly receiving advice from others. It seems that the bigger you grow and the more successful you become, the more people want to get involved in your decision-making process. No single book could ever teach you when to accept advice (solicited or otherwise) and when to reject it- however All In uses real-life examples to illustrate some of the common advice pitfalls entrepreneurs fall into. Arlene talks about real people and her examples transcend any one specific industry; no mattter what your story is, you will find someone to relate to at some point in this book. My favourite line of the book is arguably, "Stop expecting people to get you." This really works on so many levels, but I really think that Lean in and All In go hand-in-hand when it comes to getting women to stop worrying about what they are 'supposed to be doing' and to start worrying about what they could be DOING.
