THE INSIDER
Huawei’s highly anticipated P60 Pro was recently launched. It’s a one-ofa-kind smartphone that speaks sophistication and innovation and has been dubbed the Number 1 Smartphone Camera by DXOMARK in March.
When it comes to event management, Lara Portelli, Events and Entertainment Manager of the SunBet Arena at Time Square in Pretoria has seen it all. She’s been hooked on the industry since the 1990s, mainly because of the thrill of a crowd as large as 10 200 people, state-of-the-art audiovisual equipment and international artists.
HLM: Which international artists have you rubbed shoulders with?
Lara: I’ve rubbed shoulders with Tina Turner, Quincy Jones, Meat Loaf, Jackie Chan, Westlife, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sarah Brightman among others.
What goes on inside a mega venue like the SunBet Arena at Time Square?

by Renate Engelbrecht Images:
HLM: What is your current role?
Lara: I was recruited during the pandemic to prepare a Covid management plan and to get the venue ready to re-open after almost a year without any shows. On 15 June 2022, SunBet Arena opened its doors once again to 5000 people – 50% occupancy – for the All
Spier’ Organic Harvest: Garden-to-Glass Tasting combines award-winning organic wines with vegetarian bites made with fresh produce straight from the Spier Food Garden.
White Soul and Comedy Festival.
HLM: What happens when loadshedding hits?
Lara: The show generator keeps the music playing and the lights on for uninterrupted entertainment. We have to switch it on ten minutes before loadshedding happens, and then the power runs seamlessly, and the team sets their watch alarms to remind us to flick the switch.
HLM: Considering the SunBet Arena and the shows hosted there, how big is big?
Lara: A big show has up to 650 staff, and the spin off for Tshwane and the restaurants and businesses around us is huge. The total seating capacity of the arena is 8500.
HLM: What do you enjoy most about what you do?
Lara: I get huge enjoyment from knowing I have built a world class team who makes the magic happen. H

Nomcebo
Zikode
Instrumental in making the world dance while they were down.
Many people reckon that success happens overnight, or that it only comes to those who are in the right place at the right time. While this might be true for some, Nomcebo Zikode’s story is different. The singer-songwriter might have been in the right place at the right time, but had she not experienced some hardships and had she not believed in herself and a higher Power, things could have turned out differently.
IT'S ONLY THE BEGINNING
As we sat down for the interview, one thing was certain: This is just the beginning for Nomcebo Zikode. We met at a property that she and her husband, Selwyn Fraser (who is also her manager) are currently transforming into a space for their company, Emazulwini Productions. Her studio is already based on the premises and evidently, Emazulwini Productions will be producing and releasing not only hers, but various other artists’ music. “I am hoping that
people will appreciate what we will be doing and that they will receive our artists with open arms,” she says.
Nomcebo, who wrote the song, Jerusalema in collaboration with Master KG, grew up in a small KwaZulu-Natal township called Hammarsdale. Remembering her childhood, she says: “I was a happy child. I really was… I loved singing. I remember singing and my neighbours would be like, ‘hah, you are making noise!’ I would
shut up for that few seconds, but I would start singing again. Not because I was disrespectful; it happened automatically. I had so much love for music.”
One can only imagine how big a part music must have played in her life, carrying her through trying times. Nomcebo’s father passed away when her mother was still pregnant with her and “growing up, it wasn’t easy at all.” Still, through hardships, her mother was adamant about continuing

to take them to school – whether it was without shoes or with a torn shirt. “What is important is that she did take us to school, as hard as it was,” Nomcebo says.
Nomcebo means wealthy in Zulu and clearly – even through trials and tribulations – she’s been living up to her name, owning it. “I don’t know what my mom was trying to do, because at that time when she gave birth to me, there was no money at all. Everything was just a mess. We were not well financially.” When she asked her mother why she decided to give her a name that
means wealth, she said: “I wanted to give you a name that would follow you. I wanted to be positive about the situation. As hard as it is today, it won’t be like this forever.” Her mother believed that things would get better and that her child will one day deliver her from poverty. Today, Nomcebo has managed to build her mother a beautiful house in Hammarsdale and she is building her business; her empire, one step at a time.
A SUCCESS STORY WORTH TELLING
The now mom of two is not shy to tell people where she comes from. “I believe
it’s a testimony. Other people need to learn from my story. They need to know that it is possible, no matter where you come from. You just need to focus; believe in your talent. As hard as it is sometimes, you can become the person that you want to become. We mustn’t see things and think that they are
meant only for specific people and not for you because you’re not a black-born person. There are so many things that can make you lose hope or look down on yourself.” Nomcebo likes to focus on the positives. While her journey came with many challenges, she believes these challenges are what shaped her into the strong and successful woman and artist she is today. “I really believe that I am a strong woman today because of what I’ve been through.”
After matriculating, Nomcebo travelled to Joburg to audition at a radio station. She immediately made her mark and although they did not end up using her voice for radio, she became a backing vocalist for big artists like Lundi Tyamara, Deborah Fraser, Zahara, Nhlanhla Nciza and more. “When you are in that environment, you get to meet other great musicians,” she says. “I met up with DJ Ganyani and we did a song together called Emazulwini. The song went very, very big. In a way that it also reached our neighbouring countries like Zimbabwe, Lesotho. They know the song.” It was after the success of Emazulwini that Open Mic phoned her up, asking if she was signed with anyone. Soon, she was signed with Open Mic and she did not release any songs up until the day of “the biggest song ever”Jerusalema.
In the explosive, now world-famous song Jerusalema, Nomcebo asks God to guide her to a place where she can find peace. Many think she wrote the song during the Covid-19 pandemic, but it was actually written pre-Covid-19 when she was struggling with depression.
A SPANNER IN THE WHEELS
Nomcebo was so happy when the song was released, only to find that the Covid-19 pandemic might bring all of this excitement to a hasty halt. “I was praying, asking God

what was happening. This was my time. After fifteen years of being a backing singer, I’ve been wanting to do this so badly. This was my time to travel the world, go all over, sing to people, enjoy my life and my singing career. It was so terrible.” What she did not realise, was that Jerusalema had been released at exactly the right time, lifting people from all over the world up and giving them hope amidst a very uncertain time.
When Nomcebo heard the news that Jerusalema was doing so well, she could hardly believe it. There were many mixed emotions involved, from shock and surprise to disbelief. “I felt like: ‘Am I dreaming? It can’t be me?’… I don’t really understand how I wrote this song,” she says. “It was so big. Sometimes – even today – I would look at myself and think: ‘Is this really me? Someone, wake me up!’”
A BEAUTIFUL JOURNEY RIGHT UP TO THE GRAMMIES
This year, things got even bigger. According to Nomcebo, Wouter Kellerman had been wanting to do a song with her for a long time. After tracking her down with the help of Zakes Bantwini, the three of them collaborated on a song called Bayethe, which eventually got nominated for a Grammy Award under the category: Best Global Music Performance.
Like many of us, even Nomcebo Zikode has days where she doubts herself. “I was so happy! But I didn’t think we were going to take it.” When Zakes Bantwini and Wouter Kellerman phoned her with the news that they had been nominated for a Grammy Award, Nomcebo was in Nice, France. “It was as if we won! For me, to be nominated already was a win.”
The trio went to the Grammies in person earlier this year and got to bring the award home. “Those are big artists,” she plays herself down. Thanks to Gert-Johan Coetzee and his beautifully designed and noticeable dress that she got to wear, Nomcebo shined on the red carpet. In fact, many instantly recognised her, linking her to the famous Jerusalema.
In addition to their recent Grammy Award, as well as her Top Entertainer Award by Forbes Women Africa, Nomcebo says that to see people from all over the world dance to Jerusalema despite their culture; their colour, is one of her biggest career highlights to date. “To be able to write a big song like that in my own language - one that is loved not by my country alone, but by the whole world - means a lot to me.”
PROUDLY SOUTH AFRICAN, PROUDLY ZULU
Nomcebo loves writing in her own language. “I am really comfortable in my language,” says the Zulu singer. “I am happy that I’ve managed to cross over without singing English or any foreign language. It shows other people who are under pressure that for you to make it, you don’t have to sing in another language… When I am singing in my own language, I can express my feelings in a beautiful way.” This is evident in how people who don’t even understand Zulu connect with her music and her songs. “They can feel it comes from the heart.”
Nomcebo’s music is universal and that is what people love about it. It brings cultures together - not only in South Africa, but globally. H

Expert, Sandy Fuhr debunks some common beauty myths
#HelloLifestyle by Renate

TOP 5 BEAUTY MYTHS DEBUNKED
Images: Supplied
When it comes to one’s skin, it’s crucial to be clued up on myths versus facts. Especially with so much going on in the beauty world these days – from fashionable fads to eco-friendly and sustainable movements. We asked Sandy Fuhr, a somatologist and beauty veteran with over 40 years of experience in the beauty industry for some clarity.
PEOPLE THINK A DRY SKIN IS A DEHYDRATED SKIN AND VICE VERSA. It’s not. “A dry skin is oil depleted, and a dehydrated skin is water depleted.” People therefore often buy the wrong products, especially when shopping at retail stores without any professional guidance.
EXFOLIATION CAN BE DETRIMENTAL TO THE SKIN. Nope. In fact, beauty experts advise that you should exfoliate your skin lightly, two to three times per week. “And to have professional advanced skin peeling done by a qualified therapist once per month,” says Sandy.
OILY SKIN MEANS YOU DON’T NEED A MOISTURISER. Wrong again! Moisturiser is essential for any skin type. “It is so essential to maintain the water level and hydration of the skin, using an excellent moisturiser.”
MORE EXPENSIVE THE PRODUCT, THE BETTER IT IS FOR
THE
YOU. While it might be true that some products are better than others, it’s not necessarily true that the more expensive ones are the better ones. The higher the percentage of active ingredients in a product, the more efficient it will be on your skin, which has a higher development cost point. “We are often paying additional for elegant packaging and marketing. Be scrupulous about your product selection,” says Sandy.
SKINCARE PRODUCTS CAN CURE ACNE. In the case of acne, buying new products when you have a breakout is not the answer. “Usually, the skin will react in the beginning when using new products. Products can help manage inflammation and prevent further congestion,” says Sandy, but “it is imperative that hormones and genetics are evaluated by a dermatologist in this case".

SCALP HEALTH
HEALTHY HAIR STARTS FROM WITHIN
With so many products available on the market, it is easy to feel completely overwhelmed by which one to buy. Especially when you have a problem that you desperately want to fix. Scalp health is one of those things and we’re all for those luscious looking locks, which is why we’ve taken it upon ourselves to break it down for you.
The question is, how do you even start your journey to a happy head of hair? We spoke to Houghton-based Dr Reza Mia, who specialises in cosmetic and aesthetic treatments and practises in Joburg, Durban and Cape Town. We also touched base with Vicki Taylor, a Durban-based internationally qualified hairstylist and they both agree that well nurtured hair comes from a healthy scalp.
FOOD FOR YOUR FOLLICLES
When it comes to hair and scalp health, the saying: “You are what you eat,” rings true. Scalp health is a combination of having a healthy diet and lifestyle, including a regular exercise regime and a careful balance of the right vitamins and minerals. These are all vital components of a healthy head of hair. Dr Reza says that our scalp needs a combination of 350 active ingredients for healthy hair. We are all unique with different levels of these active ingredients such as vitamins and minerals and we all have different requirements of these. So, how do you know what’s right for you?
Dr Reza recommends a DNA swab. This will give you a very clear indication of what you have and what you need. Vicky Taylor suggests blood tests to check exactly where your body is at and see if you have any deficiencies. That way, you will know what needs to be added to your daily diet.
SCALP STRUGGLES
Fresh Glow Peel-Off Mask
With blackberry extract and hyaluronic acid, it forms part of essence’s new range, HELLO, GOOD STUFF! We’re all about hydration and a radiant glow this winter.
If you are battling with any problems with your scalp - be it a dry and flaky scalp, oily and greasy scalp, dandruff (a fungal infection) or even hair loss - a visit to a professional hairstylist is a great start to unravelling the mystery. If your hairstylist is unable to assist, the next step would be to book an appointment with your aesthetic practitioner, who will be able to assist you with a specialised treatment plan. This normally includes PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma treatment), a micro needling treatment which allows the platelet rich plasma to penetrate the hair follicles. The micro-needling allows for the plasma - rich in the patient’s own platelets - to promote regeneration of cells.
This goes to show that there are many ways to get your scalp back to its optimal health. With a bit of patience and some professional guidance, it can soon be a problem of the past.

The programme - supported by the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture - has launched numerous talented creatives’ careers over the past eighteen years. This includes fashion designer Thebe Magugu, furniture designer Mpho Vackier, jewellery designer Katherine-Mary Pichulik, designer and illustrator Daniel Ting Chong, milliner Crystal Birch and more.
The curator of this year’s edition of the programme is Neo “Nene” Mahlangu and she says: “It’s an honour to be part of this encouraging process, and it has reinvigorated my own inspiration. I am thrilled to see the calibre of Emerging Creative talent shining in this year’s selection. It’s clear that the future of creativity in our country is in capable hands.”
From photographers, filmmakers and illustrators to fashion designers and artists, Mahlangu handpicked twenty creatives. She will be presenting a bespoke masterclass on business development to the class of 2023 – a workshop built on the 5 Bs designed to guide the future changemakers on their paths. These Bs cover brilliance, bravery, business skills, branding and brand building.
FOR THE LOVE OF FASHION
Among the twenty creatives are four fashion forward designers who are already defining the future of the South African fashion industry with their bold approaches. Shamyra Moodley, Khumo Morojele, Nokhukhanya Zungu and the sister-duo, Rucita and Viveka Vassen are all designers set to make the runway shine a little brighter this year.

Shamyra Moodley began her professional career as an accountant and ‘accidently’ landed in design. She designs items that are both kind to the planet and spark joy and her designs are all created from pieces of donated or reusable fabric. Her brand is named LaaniRaani and she says: “The combination of legislation, consumer education, the mindset of repurposing wasted fabric and considered design with scale in mind can bring about an industry shift that benefits our planet and its people.” Shamyra recently featured in Forbes Africa, talking sustainable fashion and she made her international fashion debut in Abu Dabi earlier this year.
NOKHUKJANYA ZUNGU
Khumo Morojele is a self-taught sustainably minded designer and creative director. His mom – who ran her own boutique – introduced him to thrifting, which led him to make upcycled pieces and share them with friends. He says: “I had to make do with what I had and that ties into sustainability.” This foundation is what made him fall in love with fashion, and that’s what’s going to make him shine. In fact, he’s already had a taste of the international fashion scene, having taken part in the British Council-sponsored Design Futures Lab, the We Are Culture Standard Bank group exhibition, the We Are The Ones Nike Air Force 1 anniversary exhibition and a collab with French design school Casa93 for Paris Fashion Week.
RUCITA AND VIVEKA VASSEN
Nokhukjanya Zungu founded her brand, Makhosazana in 2021 and specialises in contemporary African women’s wear, showcasing the beauty of African textiles, heritage and culture. Originally a Wits graduate who majored in international relations and psychology, her internship at Ri.Ch Factory introduced her to the world of fashion and there was no turning back. She was handpicked to participate in the Fashion Lab Project powered by the South African Creative Industries Incubator, which led to a two-month mentorship programme with none other than David Tlale.
Rucita and Viveka Vassen are two sisters from Cape Town with a background in fashion and graphic design. They started a design studio called Ananta during the Covid-19 lockdown in 2020. Their brand offers them the freedom to design everything from clothing and bags to furniture and lighting – centred around collaboration. Rucita and Viveka work with craft communities to develop unique, functional art pieces, including their eyecatching handbags, while creating economic empowerment at the same time. They believe in a circular economy and aspire to create sustainable, ethical and eco-conscious products. H

THE ULTIMATE WAY TO MAKE YOUR PASSIONS MATTER
by Alyson le Grange Images: Supplied and Alyson le Grange
We recently met with uShaka Marine World’s Daniel Chetty, who volunteers for the South African Association of Marine Biology. Daniel (22) was inspired to complete her honours degree in Marine Biology due to her intense love for animals and the ocean. She spends her days caring for the turtles and other marine animals at uShaka Marine World - those being rescued, rehabilitated and released.
We walked around the aquarium as she recounted her adventures and experiences. She loves what she does and doesn't mind suffering the odd turtle bite every now and then. She’s had some incredible experiences that make volunteering worth her while. She recalled a turtle named Oden that was found stranded at the Bluff. He was so thin and weak when he was rescued and brought to SAAMBR. In fact, they had to work very hard to save him. This included having to
cut up squid strips (he was a fussy eater) and having to hand-feed him small amounts up to eight times daily. Luckily, Oden made a full recovery, and he was released back into the ocean two weeks before we met Daniel. While it was a bittersweet moment for her, there is a radiance about her that can only come from the satisfaction following the successes of her efforts; the care and time that she invests to help save animals’ lives.

RELEASES SINGLE CALLED FREE
Many can relate to Michael Neill’s brand-new single, Free. The song was written from an autobiographical standpoint. “I did that because I had overcome some challenging obstacles and worked through diversity.” The young artist and fashion designer is making his mark across the creative field, and Free is his anthem - a mantra we can all relate to in chasing dreams, embracing self-belief, building confidence and celebrating what makes each of us unique. He worked with pop music icon, DJ and producer Dave Pearce on the single and Pearce says: “I enjoyed working with Michael on this track. It was a super smooth process from start to finish.”

NEIL SANDILANDS’ LATEST ALBUM
Neil Sandilands has just released his second album in two years, called Allegaarkie vir ’n Askeet. The spelling of the two words, in combination with his 47th year around the sun brings the repetition of AK47 about – something he invites listeners to interpret as they see fit. The Sweet Tooth actor fell in love with music long before he started acting, and says the pure joy of existence certainly registered first in music. His new album materialised during Covid-19, in a world filled with loadshedding, theft, corruption and somewhere, also war. During this time, he flew around the planet twice, self-quarantined in New Zealand and Australia, and worked on both Sweet Tooth 2 and Planet of the Apes. The album is covered in a wide cosmic net, and lends credit to influences like CJ Langenhoven, NP van Wyk Louw, Ingrid Jonker, Koos Kombuis and more. It includes personal, specific, small references and you might also notice some vulnerability and resilience.

DE TOREN PRIVATE CELLAR
A CONTINUOUS QUEST FOR BORDEAUX BRILLIANCE
years later, they received certification for their organic farming practices, which form a fundamental part of what they do.
he welcomed us, Managing Director, Albie Koch made us turn right back around to fetch our jackets. “The cellar can get quite cold,” he explained.
The estate’s recently renovated manor house had us in awe – beautiful emeralds and golds lured us in, magnetically pulling us toward the bar area where we plonked ourselves down, looking out over vineyards and calming water features. The breeze lightly lifted the corners of cosy blankets draped around the outdoor chairs and at once, we were ready for winter. For us, there is no better way to celebrate winter than with a blanket, a fireplace and a glass of red wine.
Just outside of Stellenbosch lies the idyllic De Toren Private Cellar, home to some of South Africa’s finest Bordeaux-style wines. Its Dutch name translates to ‘the tower’ and symbolises the tower that forms such an integral part of the wine estate’s impressive cellar roof. De Toren was established in 1994, and in 1999 already saw the launch of the De Toren Fusion V Maiden Vintage. Twenty
De Toren’s focus is on classic Bordeaux varietals including Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot.
THE GREATNESS OF GRAVITY
Known for their continuous quest for perfection, a cellar experience at De Toren is intimate, exclusive and exceptional. One thing that makes them stand out from the rest is that its cellar was South Africa’s firstever 100% gravity-fed cellar – a design that facilitates the gentlest movement of wine.
FLAVOUR-LED FERMENTATION
Another first is De Toren’s fermentation tanks. The juice is vinified in smaller, wider tanks in the cellar, which are custom designed in South Africa for the wine estate. These tanks allow for a greater ratio of skin contact and limit the number of manual punchdowns required to ensure optimal flavours and extraction.
BASKET PRESS BRILLIANCE
Following fermentation, the juice and skins then get placed into a classic, old-world-style basket press. This is one of the most delicate methods of pressing – you can sometimes still find whole berries in the basket after pressing has been completed. While the most common basket presses are made from wooden staves with small holes, De Toren makes use of a cleaner, more sustainable stainless steel basket press, which prohibits bacteria to grow.
BLOCKS AND BARRELS
When it comes to barrel maturation, individual vineyard blocks are carefully matched to predominantly French coopers. Their Malbec gets the benefit of some American Oak, though.
De Toren’s wines lie in the barrels for a full twelve months.
#HELLORECOMMENDS
De Toren is certainly a wonderworld for winter wines. We highly recommend booking one of De Toren Private Cellar’s exclusive guided cellar tours.

One of the most magnificent varietals when it comes to wine is Viognier. It was originally cultivated in France’s Rhône Valley and while it is a lesser-known varietal in South Africa, its vinification process is said to require a high level of skill and expertise. Alvi’s Drift Private Cellar’s multi-award-winning Signature Viognier is one of those wine finds that has become synonymous with South African Viognier, with it being one of the country’s largest Viognier producers. Their internationally acclaimed Signature Viognier 2021 was awarded a Gold Medal at the 2022 Viognier Challenge, and it was also the highest-scoring wine in the overall line-up.

THE POT LUCK CLUB JOBURG
FROM THE MOTHER CITY TO THE CITY OF GOLD
Chef Luke Dale Roberts and his talented crew of chefs have recently unveiled The Pot Luck Club Johannesburg. The City of Gold will now be the permanent home of the popular Cape Town restaurant, which has been a huge success in the Mother City since opening its doors in 2012.
Located in Rosebank’s Oxford Parks development, The Pot Luck Club offers a different experience to that of the highly curated fine dining of The Test Kitchen Carbon, which used be based in the same spot. The Pot Luck Club Johannesburg comes with a more lively urban energy suited to Joburg’s vibrant dining scene. It serves tapas-style dishes with global flavours as inspiration, which have been reinvented with Pot Luck’s signature style. The menu includes more than twenty individual plates, and the restaurant aims to let guests experiment and create their own dining experience by setting the pace, the price and the choice of dishes.
The Pot Luck Club Joburg has an allstar team, with Group Executive Chef Jason Kosmas leading the menu and Gray Tawanda (the longest-serving manager of
The menu will be familiar to Pot Luck fans, starting with a bread course, as well as family favourites - a selection of Pot Luck’s greatest hits. In addition, the menu also includes some other bestsellers, which come with a unique twist for discerning Joburg diners. These include the beef tataki, served with a fresh spring onion dressing and roast garlic aioli, as well as the line fish which swims in saffron cream with a tamarind dressing and a complementing basil mint salad. A sure highlight is the Mexican-inspired pork belly, though. It comes with a soft-shell taco, ancho chili dressing and beautiful pineapple salsa.
This new addition to Joburg’s dining scene also has a dedicated Cold Bar from which
they serve oysters with a Vietnamese-style Nuoc Cham dressing, or line fish ceviche dressed with the kick of a classic ‘tiger’s milk’.
Of course, the restaurant also has a carefully curated list of wines from boutique South African cellars. Signature Pot Luck daiquiris, martinis and sake-based cocktails are also on the list.
The Pot Luck Club Johannesburg has an edgy urban elegance that is a perfect fit for Joburg-based foodies. It is open for lunch from 12:30 to 14:00 and dinner from 18:00 to 21:00, Monday through to Saturday.

THE BISTRO AT BROOKDALE
CUISINE FOR THE CURIOUS AT HEART
Aonce forgotten vineyard is now open for imagination and tranquillity to not only those who visit, but also those who work there. Brookdale Estate is making waves with not only winemaker Kiara Scott Farmer’s intriguing wine blends, but also with its newly launched bistro. Yes, the latest addition to the relatively new wine farm in Paarl, is that of The Bistro at Brookdale.
Located on the slopes of Brookdale Estate’s furthest corner of vineyards, The Bistro came as a total surprise to us. As with their wines, it seems that curiosity is what inspires them to stand out from the crowd; the urge to push further and explore things more deeply.
Chef Gary Coetzee is at the steer of The Bistro at Brookdale, an eatery that comes with thoughtful creations on beautiful plates, completed with an interlinking Tasting
Room at the estate’s newly established and rather impressive cellar. Seated on the deck outside, our eyes were gently guided across a sea of newly planted vineyards and the beauty of Paarl’s mountains.
Chef Gary is all about moving to nature’s rhythms when it comes to what’s on the menu. He’s a culinary mastermind, combining flavours and textures that make you long for home, while transporting you to unknown sensory galaxies at the same time.
OPEN YOUR MIND TO CUISINE FOR THE CURIOUS
The one thing that we found refreshing during our visit to The Bistro at Brookdale, was the fact that the dishes on the menu were eloquently created with the curious diner in mind. Each dish came with a hint of home nostalgically woven into it, while still holding an element of surprise. And, while Chef Gary stays on top of culinary trends,
he does not let it persuade him to move away from a seasonal, sustainable menu.
For starters, we indulged in The Bistro at Brookdale’s Curried Beetroot Pavé with Onion Bhaji, Peanut, Mint and Coriander, Chutney, and Sweet and Sour Cling Peach. This is but one of the dishes that we are convinced will stay a firm favourite on the menu.
We then moved over to mains, opting for the Duck Leg Confit, Crisp Breast, Sweet Potato, Pak Choi, Fine Beans and Ginger Gastrique. It’s rare that we miss out on duck when it’s on the menu and this was one of the best by far.
Dessert was in the form of a Coconut Panna Cotta with Mango Gel, Passionfruit Sorbet, Sweet Toasted Coconut and Freshly Cut Mango.
Finally, a delightful Charcuterie board filled with unique cheeses carefully selected by Chef Gary did the rounds. It included Cremezola, Gay’s Prince Albert, Belnori Ash Log and Dalewood Brie.
The Bistro at Brookdale brings with it an elegant atmosphere, coupled with a hearty, welcoming feel.

CAPE TOWN
WINTER MIGHT BE WET, BUT THAT’S WHAT MAKES CAPE TOWN SO MAGICAL!
AMAZING MUNCH SPOTS
SCALA PASTA BAR
You might miss it as you drive past on Cape Town’s busy Buitengracht Street, but being a little hidden away makes it all the more intriguing. Scala Pasta Bar is known for its brilliant pasta dishes with all their pasta being made in-house while you sip on a glass of wine. The interior of the underground pasta bar is dark, with the kitchen being lit up with clever lighting since that’s where all the magic happens. It’s a place for sharing. Here, friends and family can dive into bowls of pasta, sharing bites of this and tastes of that as they chat the night away.
Q @scalapasta
KLOOF STREET HOUSE
It’s right on Kloof Street and brings with it a vibe of old-world charm. Candle sticks are covered in wax from many evenings’ burnt candles amidst conversation and cocktails. There are tables outside, but for winter, you might want to book a table inside (and book you need to book, because it’s always packed). There are lovely lounge areas with fireplaces for families and friends to gather round, and large tables for those who want to host a birthday party or celebration of sorts. The food is delish and different, with various options for vegans and vegetarians too. For a warm winter treat, opt for their soup of the day with some Dharma tea.
SALON POT LUCK
In the heart of Cape Town’s CBD at the popular Biscuit Mill, you’ll find Salon Pot Luck, one of Chef Luke Dale Roberts’ latest ventures. Just below the original Pot Luck Club, you can enter the salon through an impressively lit tunnel and enjoy an evening out with some of the most exquisitely prepared dishes and a delightful cocktail collection. Start the evening off with fresh oysters and a glass of bubbly. Then, try out Chef Roberts’ Journey Menu – a small, focused and interactive menu reflecting many of his travel experiences. We highly recommend the Lobster, as well as the Gateaux, which comes with forêt noir, foeie gras mie cuit, cherry and hibiscus jelly and a 100% dark chocolate disk. The latter is quite rich, so perhaps opt for the half portion. Of course, a quick night cap at the beautiful bar is non-negotiable.

SECRET GIN BAR
Well, it’s not that much of a secret anymore if it lands in magazine pages, but you won’t know where it is if you’re not told. With a coffee shop façade, we never imagined finding a gem of a gin bar like this in the heart of Cape Town. Just off Wale Street, behind the Honest Chocolate Café you’ll find The Gin Bar, which now also boasts a Bubbly Bar. Walk straight through (okay, wait, buy a chocolate brownie first) and discover a beautiful, vintage looking gin bar hidden away in a lovely Cape Town courtyard! They say when it’s quiet – especially in winter months – they tend to close a little earlier, so perhaps give them a ring before arriving. But, do pitch up and taste an array of really good gins. Gins that taste like your best friend’s laugh. Gins that taste like the wind through the trees. Gins that taste like tears of joy running down your face.

THE DRINKERY
Hidden away within a former slave prison on Heritage Square on Shortmarket Street, Cape Town’s The Drinkery was recently featured on The World’s 50 Best. They’ve also been recognised as one of the 10 Best International Cocktail Bars in the Middle East and Africa by Tales of the Cocktail. It’s part gallery, part cocktail bar – a contemporary speakeasy with artwork and a living room feel. The Drinkery boasts various experiential cocktails on its menu, as well as some highballs and classics and even some wine from a curated list of some of the best South African wines. For them, it’s about providing a welcoming and inclusive space where you can contently catch up with friends, meet new people and enjoy a tipple to talk about for weeks to come.

LE LUDE ESTATE AND ORANGERIE RESTAURANT
For a taste of luxury, head out to Franschhoek and taste some of Le Lude’s exquisite Cap Classiques. Apart from Le Lude Estate’s beautiful scenery and the lovely Orangerie Restaurant overlooking the vineyards, a bubbly tasting beside the impressive cellar is a must. Le Lude is one of the few cellars in South Africa used exclusively to make Cap Classique. They were also the first South African producer of Agrafé MCC. Let the bubbles bedazzle your taste buds as you listen to the sommelier explain about the fermentation and bottling processes, the bubbles, nose and palate. The elegant tastings take place in a beautifully decorated space where you can choose from their tasting menu. You can also combine this with a cellar tour.

GET ALL TOASTY WITH TOAST’S POP-UP DINING EXPERIENCES
#HelloPretoria by Renate Engelbrecht Images: Supplied
TOAST Fine Food is no stranger to the Pretoria catering crowd. Still, they tend to hide from the hustle and often choose to make magic for the more unexpected, intimate, pop-up dining experiences that not many get to have. Since they don’t have the liability of a fixed restaurant, they have the freedom to let their creativity lead the way and therefore, it is safe to say that you will struggle to find anything similar to TOAST’s offering.
While Sorcery Café and others are outsourcing delicious baked goods, pesto’s, chili sauces, pickles, baba ghanoush and more from TOAST’s prep kitchen, it’s clear that the kitchen is evolving into a tasting kitchen too. The TOAST Fine Food kitchen has been designed in such a way that it’s possible to host intimate tasting events and unique pop-up dinners. It offers a lovely space where you can taste a whole array of dishes, whether it’s for a planned wedding or merely an intimate meal. “The possibilities are endless,” Chef Ivan Richards says. “We don’t have rent or overheads hanging over our heads,” he explains. Hence, they can look at what is seasonal and make magic from that.
The TOAST pop-up restaurant will be open for bookings from early July this year. Prospective diners can expect anything, from a three-course comfort food dinner to an eightcourse fine dining meal. Drinks will be included in the menu offering.
Check out TOAST’s online store, where they sell delicious foodie goodies, and stay tuned on social media to see when the first pop-up experience will be taking place. “We often have new ideas, but we keep it exclusive. So, we’ll make new things, or come across something new, which we will release on these pop-up evenings, or sell via our online shop for a season,” says Chef Ivan. H

MITÉRA
A MEDITERRANEAN DREAM IN THE HEART OF UMHLANGA
Mitéra Restaurant is the new kid on the block and its Mediterranean offering is causing a lot of hype. Beautifully decorated in cream and gold, bamboo and plenty of romantic lighting, it is the epitome of elegance and style. Architectural elements like arches and pillars create an almost ancient Roman space, complemented by geometrical shapes in the bar area and along the textured walls.
Of course, the cream pillared fireplace makes for a striking ambience throughout the restaurant, adding to the elaborate charm brought about by the overarching hues, the clever use of bamboo and big bulbous glass lights overhead. It creates the perfect setting
for a romantic evening, a family feast or a fun night out with friends.
As we listened to the music in the background, we were lulled into a setting beside the Mediterranean ocean. You know… Romance, a warm breeze, dancing, sun-kissed skin. Perhaps a white dress and bright yellow flowers in our hair… that kind of vibe.
It’s not just the atmosphere that had us dreaming about a Mediterranean holiday, though. The restaurant’s cuisine is also packed with flavour. From a wide variety of starters and mains to the most sumptuous Greek-style desserts.
#HelloRecommends
We dove into the feta and ricotta stuffed calamari, grilled to perfection in lemon butter dressing, as well as some skinny chops with mint pesto for starters.
Vegetarians are well catered for here, with a lovely selection of starters and mains that leave you spoiled for choice. The Kofta zucchini fried in chili oil and plated with tzatziki is a unique vegetarian alternative to the usual Greek meat koftas.
For mains, we opted for a perfectly prepared Kob and halloumi, served on a divine pearl couscous salad, with the flavours combining beautifully. The fillet with cucumber salad, skinny fries and Tirosalata (a divine Greek dip) are also worth a try.
Furthermore, the panna cotta with pistachios drizzled with honey was a light and creamy dessert - the perfect ending to a lovely evening. We also tried the Loukomades - mini doughnut balls, sprinkled with cinnamon and drizzled in honey. These are absolutely delicious and undoubtedly our most recent guilty pleasure.
Mitéra is a wonderful venue that opens at midday. Its kitchen closes only at 22:00, which means you get to linger a little longer, perhaps with a cocktail and some meze. H

LAZY (AND NOT SO LAZY) DAYS IN DURBS
JELLY PEDI
Fun for your feet
Ever heard of a Jelly Pedi? Well, Neil Ramautar has undoubtedly created the best in beauty, and that in the heart of Durban North.
BG Aesthetics’ motto, and ultimately their promise, is to offer achievable, attainable beauty and by the looks of it, that’s what they deliver. The big, bright and beautiful salon comes with greenery-filled walls and a cherry blossom tree - a self-made garden with breath-taking views of the ocean.
We were treated to the Jelly Pedi experience, which was simply…delicious. After immersing your feet in warm water, the nail technician lets you choose your favourite flavour (we went with Rose), instead of the habitual colour choice. A rose scented powder is then poured into the foot spa and as you wiggle your toes and slush your feet around, the water turns to jelly. Magic! Eventually, the jelly gets to work by gently exfoliating your feet. But wait, there’s more. Another magic powder is then added to the jelly, which dissolves it and turns the clouds on which you were walking back into water. A normal pedi treatment then follows, during which you get to indulge in a foot foam bath, minty scrub, and a relaxing massage. Finally, you get to choose your lacquer from a rainbow of colours.
There’s no doubt that here, your feet are in the best hands.

With the MORE Quarters just next door, the incredible neighbouring Upper Union Restaurant and even more Cape Cadogan guest rooms coming soon, the MORE Family Collection has developed a little Cape community of their own. In fact, with their impeccable attention to detail, they showcase gusts of glory and honourable hospitality in more than one way. From keeping their surrounding streets spotless, to sharing glorious Signal Hill sunrises and sunsets with guests – the MORE way.

AN ELEGANT, NOSTALGIC ARRIVAL Cape Cadogan’s façade takes you back to an era where ladies arrived in ball gowns and gentlemen stood on the balcony with cigars. Large doors and white pillars are complemented by checkered floors and upon entering; the word ‘glory’ is epitomised by glimpses of green and gold. Unique wallpaper showcasing pencil-drawn, life-sized flamingos brings contrast to the royal lounge setting with its extravagant, velvet couches.
It truly is a glorious affair, staying at Cape Cadogan. We were welcomed like royals with high tea type of snacks from Upper Union next door. It’s a golden thread the hotel group pulls through to all their properties – whether you’re staying in one of their properties in the Mother City, or in one of their luxurious bush lodges up north. The beautiful honesty bar lured us to pair the delicatessens with a glass of Syrah and we instantly made ourselves comfortable in the lounge. Around the corner was a little library, which we’re told holds many a traveller’s books – the ones they bought,
read and left there for the next adventurer looking for a good read. It’s become a tradition it seems, with bookworms seeking out bestsellers from Cape Cadogan’s bookshelves.
DÉCOR WITH DASHES OF SENTIMENT
Caline Williams-Wynn from Artichoke Designs has outdone herself with Cape Cadogan (as well as Upper Union’s) décor, with impeccable attention to detail and bringing in old-world Cape Town whilst keeping to modern trends.
The hotel room itself was marvellous. The black and white colours of the entrance’s checkered floors, the lounge’s wallpaper and cleverly placed patterned chairs are echoed throughout the hotel, including the rooms. So are the glorious greens, dashed elegantly around the space in the form of chairs, glass ornaments and headboards. In addition, the bathroom was spacious and beautifully decorated too. A black framed shower blended in with the checkerboard floors and we loved the Victorian bathtub and the

The word ‘Cadogan’ has Old Welsh and Irish origins, meaning glory or honour –an apt meaning for a hotel such as the MORE Family Collection’s
mirror covered cupboards. A small corner balcony also allowed us a glimpse of Table Mountain from the comfort of our room.
INCOMPARABLE DINING
Cape Cadogan does not have an in-house restaurant, but Upper Union Restaurant next door serves breakfast and a pool menu exclusively to in-house guests. You can then explore the rest of Cape Town’s exciting dining scene for lunch and dinner, or stay put and dine at Upper Union all day long.
The morning atmosphere at Upper Union is much different to that of lunch and dinner. Just as the sun peeked over the horizon - turning a dark Table Mountain into a mixed palette of greens and blues - we were ushered to a lovely corner table on the patio. From there, we could watch the street come alive with Capetonians and tourists making their way, starting their day. The aromas of freshly brewed coffee and decadent croissants found its way through the open doors and two plates filled with fruit and pastries were placed in front of us.
Upper Union’s Chef Amori Burger has a graceful way of putting meaningful memories on plates. It’s a talent not many have. She churns out nostalgic dishes in the most unique way – textures that remind you of your grandma; combinations that make you want to call your mom. Yet, we have rarely come across someone who could plate these memories so elegantly.
“Our food is simple; our food is humble. But it’s well executed,” she says. While she studied French cuisine, chef Amori says: “We don’t make tweezer food.” She explains that while she loves fine dining, it’s not her love language with food. Hers is simple, but delicious and plated beautifully. She wants people to sit around the table and give each other tastes of every plate, because it’s just so gobsmackingly good. “At my table, I want you to drink 300 litres of wine, eat 800kg ribeye and laugh out of your stomach – it should be a pleasure to be here. But, the food also needs to be great. That’s my food

It’s understandable why a well-known celebrity like Tom Cruise would choose Safari Moon as his home away from home during his recent filming trip to South Africa. It’s secluded and safe, yet it still offers a sense of freedom. And, even in the estate itself, you might just be lucky enough to spot an Aardvark or perhaps a pangolin since here, there are far less predators pouncing around. The boutique luxury lodge was envisioned by decorator and owner, Nicola Leitch. Together, she and her husband, Guy have been playing host to guests from all over the world since 2020. Nicola and Guy’s larger than life personalities have been imprinted in everything they do at Safari Moon – from the rooms’ unique décor and the Ardmore collection in the lounge, to the attention to detail when it comes to high teas, dinners, drinks at the bar and even treats for the road.
Our stay at Safari Moon would not have been a proper stay if we hadn’t had the opportunity to join the hosting couple for drinks and dinner. In fact, they are generally the life of the party. Nicola – a redhead with limitless amounts of energy – had loads of stories to tell about how the lodge came about, where she sourced the décor from and what their plans were for the future.
The luxurious rooms have all been fitted out with unique décor pieces, silky soft bath robes, beaded accent pieces and lovely scatter cushions that add a touch of home.
A BIG FIVE SAFARI
The name, Safari Moon might leave you baffled when you see that it’s based in town. The word safari instantly transfers most of us to a luxury tent or a bushveld chalet in the heart of the Kruger National Park or another African reserve – somewhere where you can spot the Big Five.
Safari Moon is just around the corner (in fact, they have a gate with access) to Balule Reserve, which is adjacent to and practically part of the Kruger. Therefore, a Big Five safari is still possible even though the lodge is based in an estate. A safari company will conveniently pick you up at the lodge and take you on either a morning or afternoon game drive (or both). You will most likely also be spoiled with some game drive treats from Safari Moon’s kitchen.
In search of a spotted cat or two, we got to see a leopard in a tree one night. We also saw the rainbird – so apt, considering we were driving in a drizzle. And, as we returned to the lodge, a glass of bubbly was waiting, together with some warm hospitality. H

TO-DOS ALONG THE ORANGE RIVER
FAMOUS NOVELIST
PAULO COELHO
DECLARED: “ALL ROADS MEET … ALL RIVERS FLOW INTO THE SAME SEA.” OF COURSE, THIS IS NOT TRUE IN THE LITERAL SENSE OF THE WORD, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO THE ORANGE RIVER AND OTHERS.
The longest river in the world is on our continent. The Nile has a length of 6 650km and flows into the Mediterranean Sea. (The second longest is the Amazon in South America and the third longest is China’s Yangtze). The Orange River is the second longest river in Africa and at about 2 100km (some sources say 2 400km), it flows into the Atlantic Ocean.
THINGS TO SEE ON THE BANKS OF THE ORANGE RIVER
The only big city the Orange River passes through is Upington in the Northern Cape. Here you can visit a life-sized bronze monument of a donkey – a sculpture that symbolises donkeys’ contributions in developing the Lower Orange River Valley when pioneers still roamed the area.
Kanoneiland outside of Upington is one of the only islands in the river. It’s also the largest inhabited island in South Africa and definitely worth a visit. Also be sure to taste some wines from Orange River Cellars.
With a holiday resort where you can boat, fish and relax, the Gariep Dam is another must-visit attraction along the Orange River. While it is the largest dam on the Orange River, it is also the largest in the country.
Of course, the Augrabies Falls in Augrabies Falls National Park is a sight to behold,
especially when in flood. Its original Khoikhoi name, Ankoerebis means ‘place of big noises.’
Another must-see is the mission station of Pella. This oasis town is known for its beautiful Catholic Cathedral and delicious dates.
ORDER ON THE BORDER
A rather large part of the Orange River forms the border between South Africa and Namibia. One of the only ferries in the country - crossing the river between the two

countries - can be found at Sendelingsdrift at the Richtersveld National Park’s main gate.
Vioolsdrift (South Africa) and Noordoewer (Namibia) are the main border posts on the Orange River. This is where the N7 from Cape Town to Namibia ends.
Last, but not least, the hamlet of Onseepkans north of Pofadder is a seldomly used border post with a quirky pink shop for basic supplies. Look out for the jalopy at the entrance. H
FUN FACTS
It has too many waterfalls and rapids, though small, for big boats or ships to travel along the river.
It flows from the east to the west, across the width of the country.

THIS IS WHERE PEOPLE ARE BUYING

Looking for a small-town buy?
Semigration is a thing and many South Africans are moving out of the city to smaller towns for a slower life. According to Business Tech, these are some of the small towns people are opting for:
SWELLENDAM
It might be true that the rand is struggling, but that doesn’t stop South African cities from shining worldwide. In fact, according to research that has recently been done by the US financial services firm, NetCredit, Pretoria has been identified as the most affordable capital in the world.
The study analysed more than 800 000 property listings for 73 global capitals. It then calculated the median house price of each. They also used the average monthly net salary for each city to calculate affordability.
“Understandably, its popularity has driven up house prices within the greater Pretoria area, and we saw an increase of more than 13% in average house prices last year, according to the BetterBond Property Brief (April 2023) –good news for the local economy,” says Carl Coetzee, CEO of BetterBond. “Happily, it still remains one of the most accessible South African cities for buyers across all price bands because it offers a wide selection of property
types, including security complexes and estates. In addition, it boasts highly desirable leisure and lifestyle options, outstanding medical facilities, excellent schools and first-class tertiary education, including the University of Pretoria, University of South Africa and the Tshwane University of Technology.”
According to Property24, Pretoria is being future-proofed when it comes to its property market, since buyers between the ages of 18 and 35 are accountable for a third of the homebuyers in the city. 38% of the homebuyers in Pretoria are aged between 36 and 49. Property24 suggests that the city is popular with families wanting to be close to schools and educational opportunities.
Of course, Pretoria is also an appealing city to settle in, since it’s located in manageable proximity to destinations like the Lowveld, Kwazulu-Natal and even several neighbouring countries. H
For those looking to buy, sell, rent, invest or just check out what the market has to offer, The Property Show will be taking place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre between 10 and 11 June. Various exhibitors from the property eco-system will be at designed stands to engage with those interested. There will also be Educational Theatres with presentations and discussions hosted by industry experts. Tickets are available at Quicket.
This beautiful town has boomed since 2020, with well-priced properties selling within three to five days after being listed. The property prices have gone through the roof, with the town being a great stopover to the Garden Route from Cape Town. It’s popular for its robust agricultural economy, good schools, clean air and retirement options, as well as a rich history.
HARTBEESPOORT
This town is a popular choice for people from Gauteng and according to Donna Nass from Seeff, the town’s proximity to Joburg and Pretoria makes it the perfect choice.
LADISMITH
The Karoo town of Ladismith has been drawing buyers from Gauteng, Kwazulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and more. It’s close to George and the beach, and properties here are rather affordable in comparison.
According to Seeff, Ladismith’s housing market has seen its highest turnover in five years.
Gansbaai, Struisbaai, Langebaan, Plettenberg Bay and Riversdale are also popular choices.

A ROYAL TIME
MABULA’S JUST UPPED ITS GAME (EXCUSE THE PUN) WITH A BRANDNEW VILLA ADDED TO ITS OFFERING.
by Renate Engelbrecht
Multi-generational travel is a concept that has been increasing in popularity across the globe. Even in South Africa, lodges and leading venues have been noticing in influx of multigenerational families travelling together. Hence, it didn’t come as much of a surprise when the popular Mabula Private Game Reserve jumped on the bandwagon, launching a cosy, luxury villa to cater to these kinds of travellers and other groups.
The Big 5 game reserve is now home to the brand-new Kingfisher Villa, based right in front of a waterhole, boasting a tranquil setting and magnificent views. Its five luxury bedrooms – one of them being what we’d refer to as the Executive Suite – come with all
the bells and whistles and have been decorated with rich African tassels and tones. A porch with lovely day beds and chairs hugs the recently renovated house from one side to the other, with a lovely outdoor lounge setup at the far end. It is here where we were welcomed with hand and foot massages amidst birdsong and a cool early-winter breeze. We kept our gaze on the waterhole in front of us, optimistically waiting for pairs of croc eyes to pop up from the water. While we did not spot any crocodiles there, our afternoon and morning game drives offered some exciting sightings. In fact, we happened to spot a croc covering an impressive distance on foot, from one waterhole to the next. That, as well as lions, elephants, wild dogs, rhinos and more. With it being less than two hours’ drive from
Joburg, Mabula Private Game Reserve and its Kingfisher Villa make for the best-ever venue for a family gathering, corporate function or any other group event. The lounge area, as well as the dining area come with stateof-the-art combustion fireplaces that add to an already comforting atmosphere. The glass-topped dinner table is complemented by golden velvet chairs and invites one to take a seat for delightful dining experiences curated by the villa’s private chef. It’s the ideal setting for daring debates or fun board games. There is also an impressive bar right in the middle of the villa, which acts as the perfect get-together spot for groups, walking out onto beautiful bushveld views from the porch. H

40 YEARS OF EAGLE FORD
When you walk into the Joburg-based Eagle Ford, where over 50% of the business is repeat business, one thing is clear: The people on the floor (and those behind the scenes) are there because they want to be. In fact, some have been part of the company right from the start and saw it evolve from a humble beginner dealer to a respectable business. “We probably are the largest independent Ford dealer in the country. It’s an ongoing battle between us and Lazarus in Centurion, who are also independent,” says John Landey, who founded the business with his late business partner, Henk Gillesen in 1983.

As we sat in their cafeteria, attempting to put 40 years of a successful enterprise in words, a quote by the one and only Henry Ford - displayed on the wall - jumped out at us: "If everyone is moving forward together, then success takes care of itself."
These words seem to be what Eagle Ford has been striving toward all along, allowing them to reach the impressive milestone of being in business for four decades this year.
JUNE - JULY 2023 l hellolifestyle.co.za 56
“IF EVERYONE IS MOVING FORWARD TOGETHER, THEN SUCCESS TAKES CARE OF ITSELF.”
BEHIND THE BRAND
John Landey has many reasons to celebrate this year. Apart from personally being in the motor industry for 50 years, the family man is also celebrating being married for 50 years. The recent birth of two additional grandkids - twins - is yet another reason to pop the bubbly.
“It’s good that South Africa has never embraced Sunday selling for cars,” Landey says, “because at least people can still have a bit of a family life.”
Apart from being a grandpa with a legacy to live up to, John Landey is also a man who continues to inspire colleagues and employees with his business-orientated mind and entrepreneurial spirit. He has always been an entrepreneur at heart. Fresh out of college, he initially launched himself into the business world by selling cosmetics, camping gear and insurance. It was only after that, in 1973, that he landed himself in the motoring industry.
Back then, the motor industry - especially the used car business - was a hard industry to be in. Yet, he kept his head high and chose to wear the white hat, promising customers a good buy from a good guy. That was McCarthy’s Car Bar for you, which later evolved into the start of something even he could not fathom: An independent Ford dealership that still stands 40 years later. Now, Eagle Ford offers its strong return customer base, as well as new customers the ultimate one-stop shop, including an additional Mahindra and Mazda offering.
MORE THAN JUST A GOOD DEAL
Eagle Ford services about 60 cars daily, and if you buy a car from them, you can wash your car there for free for three years. According to Landey, they do about 1200 free car washes per month. In addition, they also have a body shop for minor repairs, and you can even buy your tyres from them.
DID YOU KNOW?
The company name, Eagle Ford, comes from co-founder, John Landey’s time selling Dodge cars. He remembers reading in the Times Magazine that the most successful cars are usually named after birds and animals of prey. Hence, Eagle Ford was born and since then, they've clearly been successful too.
THE DREAM TEAM
Of course, as with any business, Eagle Ford has had its ups and downs. Still, 40 years down the line they have a lot to be grateful for, including a dream team.
A large part of a good team comes down to good leadership, though. His admirable leadership is not something he would highlight himself, but Landey agrees that
there are definitely a few key characteristics that make a good leader. Staying focused on the job at hand when navigating through tough times is one, as well as keeping his people motivated. “Making work fun; making it nice to come to work,” he says.
CHALLENGES AND CHANGES
A lot has changed over the past 40 years. Eagle Ford’s premises used to house a Trek petrol station, which they bought from Trek. The corner also used to be home to a Standard Bank branch, which Eagle Ford eventually also bought. They started out on 2000m² and now occupy around 25 000m², which says a lot about the business in itself.
The country, and obviously the company’s demographics have also shifted since opening in the 80s. Where Eagle Ford initially saw only white buyers (and largely white employees), they are excited about now having a more balanced customer and employee base.
Many of the staff at Eagle Ford started out as trainees, with a number of them now filling management positions. With a passion for training, Landey was also involved in setting up Ford Motor Company’s Ford Academy, through which all the training is done mainly online, especially for the sales team.
- Enthusiasm
- Ambition
- Having short-term and long-term goals
- Having empathy with people
For Eagle Ford, 40 years included managing change and coming out stronger. “Luckily we came out of it,” says Landey. “I think South Africans are a bunch who manage to overcome these difficulties.” 1 www.eaglecorner.co.za

JOHN LANDEY’S TOP LEADERSHIP QUALITIES TO ASPIRE TO INCLUDE:
BORDERLESS LIVING
WITH THE KIA CONCEPT EV5
#HelloLifestyle
by Renate Engelbrecht
One might think that there is no similarity between a lush green strip in nature and a jungle of urban architecture. Yet, Kia has found a way to make the two gel, tapping into a duo of seemingly unrelated themes and ultimately blending them into a concept of borderless living, dubbed the Kia Concept EV5.
Like many other global vehicle manufacturers, Kia is missioning toward becoming a leader in sustainable mobility solutions. The brand recently unveiled its all-electric SUV concept at the Kia Chinese EV Day. The Kia Concept EV5 was inspired by Kia’s ‘Opposites United’ design philosophy, with a strong focus on the philosophy pillar, ‘Bold for Nature.’ The vehicle is a preview of a production all-electric SUV model due to be launched in China later this year. The concept brings with it a whole new design era for the brand, hinting toward an exciting aesthetic direction, considering future fully electric vehicles.
OPPOSITES, UNITE!
Kia’s design philosophy celebrates the creative tension fashioned by the fusion of the contrasting visual influences: Nature and modernity. ‘Bold for Nature’ is written all over the form and stance of the new vehicle concept. Ultimately, the design communicates that there is no boundary between enjoyment and appreciation of nature and the city.
Karim Habib, Executive Vice President and Head of Kia Global Design Centre explains: “The Kia Concept EV5 takes influence from the contrast and complementarity of natural landscapes and man-made architecture. It is designed to inspire our customers on every journey, while providing sustainable
and environmentally responsible solutions. Created for those who seek inventive new ideas, the SUV brings together emotional form language with innovative, user-focused interior architecture.”
AUTHENTICALLY KIA, WITH A MANTRA OF HARMONY
When looking at the Concept EV5 one might argue that it exudes a progressive look from all angles, yet it’s still authentically Kia.
The vehicle’s design blurs the boundaries between outdoor and indoor spaces. Innovative swivel seats enable passengers to continuously enjoy views of their surrounding scenery, whether they are in the city or out in nature. As the sun sets, the wide, full-length panoramic sunroof – which also acts as solar panels – provides the ideal opportunity to enjoy the stars (or the glimmering city lights).
Furthermore, it also comes with a flat floor and generous space, creating a feel of coexistence where nature, people and technology can come together in harmony. Even the colour palette and design have been carefully chosen to bring calmness and purity.
Kia is setting new sustainability standards by not using animal leather. Various sustainable materials are used throughout the cabin of the Concept EV5. This includes plant-based materials like seaweed extract and upcycled PET bottles on the seats, doors, dashboard and headliner.
The vehicle is said to be released in the Chinese market later this year, with plans for other global markets to be unveiled in due course. H

DRIVING INTO THE FUTURE
HYBRIDS AND FULLY ELECTRICS ARE THE WAY TO GO
JEEP AVENGER
Recently named ‘Best Small Car’ at the Autocar Awards 2023, the all-new, fully electric Jeep Avenger raises the bar when it comes to compact form and sophistication. Designed and built in Europe, this quirky, compact SUV is Jeep’s very first battery-electric vehicle (BEV).
It has taken the team who made the Avenger a lot of time, commitment and passion to come up with a car that brings something truly different to the small SUV class. It might be small, but the Avenger still speaks true to the original Jeep design and its rugged character.
The vehicle is an all-electric compact SUV that has been wellpositioned in the rapidly growing B-SUV segment. Its ideal match is an active driver looking for an SUV with compact dimensions (this one is a mere four metres in length). It is compact, yet it still offers a lot of space and storage possibilities. They’ve packed the Jeep DNA into the Avenger well, with a combination of capability, style, functionality and technology.
The Jeep Avenger has a range of up to 250 miles in the WLTP cycle and its new electric powertrain combines a unique 400-volt electric motor with 115 kilowatts, 260 Nm of maximum torque and a new 54 kWh battery.

THE BILLIONAIRE CAREER
#HelloLifestyle
by Renate Engelbrecht
Images: Supplied
Daniel Strauss says people measure success in different ways – some in cashflow and wealth; others in family relationships. Still, there are ways in which you can be more successful in life and The Billionaire Career will teach you how.
While his first book, The Billionaire Mindset (also a bestseller) included various short stories to explain difficult business concepts, his second reads like a story. It follows the life of Dan, who goes through many financial and business challenges, ultimately teaching the reader various important lessons along the way.
SMALL TOWNS MAKE MINDFUL MEN
Daniel says it’s living in a small town that made him want more opportunities. His entrepreneurial mindset and drive might also have something to do with it, as well as the continuous support from his successful wife, the former Miss South Africa and Miss World, Rolene Strauss.
One of the benefits of growing up in a small town is that you learn to work with people in such a way that you can look them in the eye the next day. “If you are in private investment, you almost marry every business you invest in.” Daniel says it’s
a long-term relationship and that to keep those relationships healthy, you need to have empathy and know that everyone goes through different seasons in their lives.
DEFINING SUCCESS
There are different ways to define success and wealth, claims the author. You can look at it in the light of shareholder value, or you can define it in terms of cashflow. “For me, something is a success when it can create shareholder value and ensure strong cashflow at the same time, because you need both to have a balanced business.” Later, it becomes like a game – “you pull this lever, then this happens. You pull that lever, then that happens. Then you can see how your business’ financial statements change from month to month.”
THINK ABOVE THE LINE
One of the biggest tools you’ll also find in Daniel Strauss’ latest book, is that of understanding the method of thinking of an investor, shareholder, and director in a business. It differs from the employee’s way of thinking and you need to understand and implement that way of thinking in order to make a success of your business. “This is one of the biggest problems in South Africa when it comes to entrepreneurship and that is why I originally wrote my first book. I realised that if we don’t get a critical mass of entrepreneurs to think above the line, we are going to have a bunch of managers and employees who are entrepreneurs, and they are just never going to be able to build big businesses because they don’t think in the right way.” H
