Get comfy with Birkenstocks this winter. Birkenstock® has just opened up shop in Hyde Park Corner, Joburg. Pop in and take a peek at their Bryson Leather Boots for women and also the Suede Leather Gary Birkenstocks for men.

dith Sitwell said: “Winter is the time for comfort, for good food and warmth, for the touch of a friendly hand and for a talk beside the fire. It is time for home.”

That’s exactly what we’ve gone searching for, for this edition of Hello Lifestyle Magazine and once again, I’ve enjoyed every step toward print day. Our Winter Edition is filled with warmth – from a Father’s Day inspired H-List with all things must-have, to fireside talks with Richard Poynton whom we’ve dubbed one of the fathers of the KZN Midlands’ culinary scene. We talk about some of the most sought-after spots to dine at and we suggest some of the best drinks to share with dad.

This edition is also dedicated to human kindness – a trait that Madiba, whose wisdom we celebrate on 18 July, was driven to teach the nation, like a father would his children. And, with Youth Day also taking place in June, this edition even holds some handy hints on how to keep yourself young and with the times.

Essentially, it’s a mixture of things for both young and old – a guide not only to the major cities of our beautiful country, but also to the heart of the home. And there - at home - is where we’d also love to see you sit back, relax and page through our magazine this winter. With a glass of red wine in hand, of course.

Wishing all the dads out there a wonderful, family-filled Father’s Day and a warm, wonderful winter. And, thinking of those who have lost a dad and miss him. May this year’s Father’s Day serve as a day filled with some of your fondest family memories.

Moedi Wines 8 Black Bee Brut Cap Classique. In collaboration with Black Elephant Vinters, Moedi Wines recently launched this bubbly, which receives a dosage of honey. It’s the secret season for bush visits (see our travel section for more) and hence this wine is quite fitting. “While the African elephant reigns over the bush, it’s the small African honeybee that creates boundaries around the entire bush ecosystem for the elephant and all its animals, driving food security through pollination,” says Moedi Wines owner, Lesego Serolong Holzapfel.

This Indoor Firewood Holder from Pedersen + Lennard is pretty for mom and practical for dad. It’s a winwin! The Cape Town-based brand is all for sustainability, which means when you buy from them, you’ll be supporting a circular economy.

Dr Fezile MKHIZE

ECHOES OF THE PAST BRING HOPE FOR THE FUTURE

#HelloLifestyle by Renate Engelbrecht Images: Hanneri de Wet Photography Venue: Nineteen by Michael, Steyn City Wardrobe: Own attire; Curve Gear

His swanky style and the confidence with which he walked made him stand out as he arrived. He entered through the regal doors of Nineteen by Michael and we knew, this was going to be a good chat. Currently the co-presenter of Top Travel and the recent winner of Mr Supernational South Africa, Dr Fezile Mkhize is no stranger to the limelight. Yet, his demeanour is typical of someone who invites conversation and engagement.

Together with his partner, Dr Anesu Mbizvo, he's been travelling all over, filming Top Travel after taking the baton from former Top Travel presenters, Janez Vermeiren and Jeannie D. Dr Fez, as followers and fans have come to know him - loves exploring the globe with his best friend by his side. That’s not all that keeps him busy, though and one thing is clear: For Dr Fez, life is there to live!

A MAN ON A MISSION

As he throws a vintage green jacket over his shoulders for a photo, a moment passes where we can’t help but wonder about the path he’s taken to get where he is today. Dr Fez is a medical doctor by profession, but also an actor and presenter who is often seen on television series like Generations and more. Not to mention his recent new title of Mr Supernational South Africa!

A FULL, ENGAGING LIFE

"As a kid I always thought that people do what they love and that that was the way to do it," the Top Travel presenter says. He doesn't believe in an individual identifying as purely one thing, like being a doctor, debating that there are so many facets to being human. That said, as a medical doctor by profession, he has always loved the procedure side of things, hence one could say that he is at least in a position where he does what he loves. But, he also loves acting and he is excited to be in a position where he can live out that dream too.

He's done some proper classical training in the acting scene, with Dorothy Ann Gould as one of his mentors. It all pretty much started during the Covid-19 pandemic, with much of it being done virtually. As soon as they started transitioning out of lockdown, he was fortunate enough to play Macbeth in a Cape Town production, which he describes as very unique. Not only was Gould his Lady Macbeth in the play, but they also got people from the community to complete the cast, which made it a very interesting project and experience. The Shakespeare production served as his right of passage into the entertainment industry, Dr Fez says, as it

I AM JUST TRYING TO LIVE A LIFE THAT IS AS FULL AS POSSIBLE.

forced him to learn monologues and throw his voice in an outdoor setting while speaking Shakespearian. We'd say that serves as a graduation of note!

While he just landed the title of Mr Supernational South Africa, he says he does not necessarily take part in pageants to win, but because he wants to make a difference.

“I am just telling people how awesome it is to engage with the world… I am just trying to live a life that is as full as possible.”

For him, whether he is treating a patient or presenting on television, it’s very much the same. Either way, he gets to engage with people, which is what he loves to do.

JUNE - JULY 2024 l hellolifestyle.co.za 9

COUPLE GOALS

Dr Fez comes from Port Shepstone on the South Coast and he remembers seeing Janez and Jeannie D on television, almost struggling to think that they were real. Now, he gets to travel the globe with his best friend, Dr Anesu Mbisvo, creating a visual diary which they can hopefully show to their children one day. It all started when the doctor couple, who have been together for ten years, did a two-day trip to Reunion for an Insider insert. That ignited the Top Travel opportunity for them and since then, they have been travelling the globe, having fun and engaging with people from various different cultures and countries.

“For us as a duo, it’s very important to never be too busy to travel,” he says. “We have a lot of fun together. She keeps me grounded. She is somebody who is very much in tune with things that have an effect on you.” According to him, she knows a thing or two about astrology and moon cycles and through her, he has been learning progressively and he has even gone through a teacher training programme as a result of it. “It really expanded my horizon when it comes to spaces like that. Because of her, that translates very well on screen, because we are just people who are adventurous and engaging.”

THE ECHOES OF A FATHER

Much of who Dr Fez is today, is because of the echoes of the father he barely knew. His dad sadly passed away when he was very young. Still, there were many influences in his life who had a profound impact on how he sees the world, including his brother, who somehow succeeded in showing Dr Fez glimpses of his dad. Dr Fez says his brother often echoes who his father was and that he has some recollection of what his dad was like. “He is a very structured individual in many ways. He’d come home and before he could do anything else, he would do homework,” he shares about his older brother. “It’s something my father had put in place with him when he started going to school and whilst I hadn’t gone to school yet, I could see that my brother was very much like that. There are ways in which my brother kind of meticulously looks after his stuff,” he continues.

Unfortunately, most of the male figures in Dr Fez’s family passed away when he was young, which left him growing up among mainly women. “Sometimes [my dad’s] friends would come over to see how we were doing. But, the anchoring male figure in my life –although he was only three years older than me – was my brother.”

Because he reads a lot, Dr Fez would also curate his experience and his engagement with others from books. This led him to hold himself to standards that are not necessarily realistic, as many books are often rather strict when it comes to a gentleman’s ways. He refers to concepts like Superman, who was given a tremendous amount of power, but was able to fly and stop at a beat to help a little baby across the road. “Isn’t that the best version of a man – if you could find somebody who is strong enough to carry the weight of the world?”

Some of the influential people in his life also showed him the gentleness that is required from a man. These people included his mother – who was a teacher – as well as his brother and sometimes even his younger sister.

That little kid who lost his dad; who was so scared of losing his mom or not being able to look after her – here he was, making a success of his life and his mom got to see it all…

Thinking back on an episode they shot in KZN, where he grew up, for Top Travel, Dr Fez says: “It’s an incredibly humbling experience.” His mom even got to visit the set and he admits that seeing the pride on her face, made it all worth it. “At some point, she was just sitting and looking at me and it looked like it just hit her that her little boy was making a success of his life. That little kid who lost his dad; who was so scared of losing his mom or not being able to look after her – here he was, making a success of his life and his mom got to see it all… For me, there was nothing but a sense of gratitude and hoping that if my father is existing somewhere, he’s kind of happy. Maybe not with having left her, but at least with what we’re doing between myself, my brother and my sister - to make sure our mom is okay.”

JUNE - JULY 2024 l hellolifestyle.co.za 10

GO! MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Another individual who played a profound role in who the Top Travel presenter is today, was his dear aunt, who also recently passed away after losing her battle to Stage 4 Breast Cancer. Her passing, together with the unfortunate loss of two cousins, served as trigger for Dr Fez to partake in pageants to raise funds and make a difference.

His aunt was the most travelled person in their family. “Thankfully, I got to see her two weeks before she passed,” he says. “She was one of the strongest, feistiest people I ever knew. She would go to chemo in heels, because she said: ‘Mkhizes show up. We fight and people see us. Then they see that there is no reason for them not to get up and fight for themselves.’”

Before her passing, his aunt had been given a principle’s post at a Durban school. She had been a teacher for a long time and after being brought into this school - which had a rather poor pass rate - she more than tripled it! His aunt brought in security and infrastructure for the school, as well as teachers from other countries to improve the quality of maths and English. “The last conversation I had with her (I recorded it without her knowing), she just spoke about the fact that she just needed to keep pushing for the school.” Now, through Mr Supernational South Africa, Dr Fez hopes to raise funds for the school. Some of the spaces were quite delipidated when he visited and his aunt had told him an amount which would be needed. He wants to raise that amount or more and name it (even if it’s just her classroom) after her. Then he would like to take the Let’s Heal Together concept - a programme he launched around the challenges of gender-based violence - further to those kids. “It’s been a tough time for our family,” he says, “but sometimes it is people who have gone through the hardest times who can highlight what the most important things in life are.”

Dr Fez is a man of many talents, but even more so, a man with many, many dreams. After all these dreams and humanitarian responsibilities have been fulfilled, he jokingly says that he will become a fat professor with many stories to tell. Or, he will go farm somewhere where he can just sit, grow his own food and take it to the table. “By then I will have lived a life as full as I could and I will just go back to Shepstone,” he laughs. Somehow, we can’t see that ever happening. H

LASER HAIR REMOVAL at The Laser

Beautique

#HelloLifestyle by Renate Engelbrecht Images: Renate Engelbrecht

Subtly hidden away in the Woodlands Boulevard shopping centre, The Laser Beautique surprises with a range of beauty offerings. The reason for our visit: Underarm laser hair removal.

While the treatment takes no longer than 15 minutes (the last session was only five minutes long), the effects are lasting and inexplicably freeing. Those wanting to remove hair for the long term, opt for laser hair removal as the treatment works in on the hair follicles, reducing and ultimately stopping hair growth. Even after just two sessions, hair growth can be much slower (we can attest to this) and after the recommended eight to twelve sessions, hair growth stops completely.

After being given our UV-protecting goggles to wear, we were professionally guided through the process of laser hair removal and we were instantly put at ease. The beauty therapist marked the section of follicles that needed to be lasered, whereafter the impressive laser machine was brought forward. The laser frequency can be adjusted and usually, the first session’s frequency will be lower, whereafter it will be increased slightly, making the process even quicker. After the treatment, a soothing product is put on the lasered skin to protect it and to help it recover. It is recommended that you don’t use any alcohol-based products under your arms for at least one day after treatment.

What we love about the idea of laser hair removal, is that it is cheaper in the long run as there would be no need for shaving or waxing anymore. For underarms, it also seems like a gentler way of hair removal, keeping the skin soft and healthy.

BOOKS ON OUR RADAR

MAN IN THE MIRROR

American history teacher, Charles Koopman recently self-published his book called Man in the Mirror, in which he places 50 maxims under the microscope, explaining how they relate to the societies and cultures he has encountered visiting over 100 different countries. During his travels, the “man without a home” (as he describes himself) came to understand how different cultures approach situations in their own way. This not only relates to how they live in these situations, but also the attitudes they embrace. His book is a rather fascinating journey through the world as it stands today. It also shows the reader how important it is to be mindful towards others and how putting yourself in another’s shoes might just be one of the greatest answers to peace and equality.

RAISING GOOD HUMANS

Written by Hunter Clarke-Fields, this book is a loving, honest road map for parents who are looking for ways to skilfully navigate parenting challenges, but also to deepen joy, connection and love with their children. It serves as a guide to instil confidence, mental health and independence in kids, while building a durable parent-child relationship. From keeping your cool and disarming your triggers, to saying the right things and supporting your peaceful home, this book comes highly recommended. It is available through Exclusive Books.

PLACE

Justin Fox is not only a great travel writer and novelist, but also a poet. That is why Place, his travelogue – recommended by Jennifer Ball, the programme director of the recent Franschhoek Literary Festival – is a must read this winter. And, it will most certainly serve as a way for you to journey across South Africa, all the while cuddling on a comfy couch in front of your fireplace. In the book, he visits the places he’s explored in the pages of favourite books by great South African writers, describing the country’s beautiful landscapes and special places.

The iconic South African band, Henry Ate, consisting of original band members, Karma-Ann Swanepoel and Julian Sun, have just released their first single in 22 years! They soared onto the South African music scene in the nineties, with a set of songs and a live show that inspired devotion that hasn’t dulled in the decades since. POSDUIF’S NEW ALBUM IGNITES A FIRE

POSDUIF’s new album, Brandstigter, literally has the country on fire with nostalgic songs about growing up, falling in love and making mistakes as some of the main themes. The lyrics to their newly released songs are real and relevant and bring about a whole new level of camaraderie among fans. They launched their album at an intimate event hosted at Whisk Wine Bar in Centurion and ironically, rain came pouring down as the event started. But, nothing could put out the fire on the night of the launch, nor ever since. Catchy lyrics from their songs have been spreading like a wildfire and we’re all for it. It takes one back to young love, being carefree and feeling youthful!

DU PLESSIS SPOT TRISTAN

AT DECOREX AFRICA

He is no stranger to the world of design, especially now that he has also been named Decorex Africa’s Designer of the Year 2024. His work is instantly recognisable in Cape Town spaces like the famous Gorgeous George Boutique Hotel and the most sustainable restaurant in the world, FYN. Not to mention the penthouse suite he designed in collaboration with Grammy Award-winning DJ, Black Coffee. Tristan du Plessis is undoubtedly one of South Africa’s most creative talents.

Looking forward to his work being featured at this year’s Decorex Joburg, which will be taking place at the Sandton Convention Centre between 1 and 4 August, he aims to create a “small slice of his international projects” where those attending the exhibition will be able engage, experience and explore how he imparts his signature maximalist, yet refined luxury into global spaces.

Tristan says: “I feel honoured to be chosen as Designer of the Year 2024 as I have a strong connection to South Africa. Even though the majority of my work is international, I consciously choose to collaborate with South African furniture designers and craftsmen to bring my various projects to life, so to be honoured among these talented designers in my home country is certainly something I’m very excited about.”

The designer founded his studio in Joburg in 2015, focusing on signature hospitality projects and later expanded to Cape Town. Other works he’s successfully brought to life include Sān Dubai, a beach club inspired by and named after Africa’s first people, as well as the Japanese-inspired local restaurant, Kōl Izakhaya.

FOR DAD DRINKS

Whether he’s a collector of fine wines or a whiskey man at heart, here are some drink suggestions that will most certainly make your dad feel valued and thought of this Father’s Day.

JUNE - JULY 2024 l hellolifestyle.co.za 18
#HelloLifestyle Images: supplied

Father’s Day brings with it not only the opportunity of celebrating your dad (or being a dad), but also the opportunity to spend quality time together as a family. Here are some drinks to have with dad this year:

FOR THE WINE CONNOISSEUR

Allesverloren’s latest port-style wine was recently unveiled and it serves as the perfect winter wine. Deemed the must-have for drinks connoisseurs, it re-affirms Allesverloren’s status as producer of premier quality wines. With the launch of this 2020 vintage also comes a new name. The Allesverloren Fine Old Vintage has now become the Allesverloren Cape Vintage - a change linked to the early 2000s’ ban on wines outside specific European areas using the name port. The Allesverloren Cape Vintage 2020 is the wine farm’s latest expression of a 150-year-old heritage and should most definitely be enjoyed with those held dear.

FOR THE BOURBONITE

Comprising of more than 200 detectable flavour notes, Woodford Reserve is a Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey boasting notes of bold grain and wood, sweet aromatics, spice, as well as fruity and floral notes. It was in 1812 that the first bourbon was produced on the site of the Woodford Reserve Distillery - a National Historic Landmark - and well, you can certainly taste generations in every sip.

FOR THE VODKA FAN

We celebrated World Water Day with a sip of SKYY Vodka this year and with good reason: The vodka brand’s reiteration of its commitment to responsible water stewardship. Any vodka fan and family man will see value in this, as we’re all bound to protect our environment not only for our own sake, but for that of our children – the next generation. At the core of SKYY Vodka lies a deep appreciation for the intrinsic value of water, not just as a cornerstone of its product, but also as a vital resource for us all. SKYY infuses its vodka with a subtle salinity and minerality from the waters of the San Fransisco Bay area. This enriches the mouthfeel and enhances the crisp taste of their iconic cocktail: Vodka and soda.

FOR THE WHISKY MAN

If your dad is a man who knows the difference between peat and Pete, perhaps a bottle of whisky will do the trick this Father’s Day. Rated 98/100 by Wine Enthusiast, the Delmore Cigar Malt Single Malt Scotch Whisky from Highlands, Scotland, is one of the best buys for your old man. It’s undoubtedly a gift that dad will sip on slowly while reminiscing about special family memories. The malt whisky comes with initial smoky and tobacco-like aromas, whereafter a bouquet of semisweet to sweet honey, pipe tobacco, sherry and dark chocolate aromas appear. On the palate, the first evident flavour is that of caramel, followed by a mid-palate smokiness that comes alive with additional flavours like sweet butter, toffee and honey. Smoke, charcoal and ash finish off each sip perfectly.

FOR THE RUM-PAPA

Sugar Baron White Rum is produced locally on the Seafield Farm in the KwaZulu-Natal’s picturesque Mkhuzane Valley. It is made in the Agricole style (fermenting and distilling the juice pressed from sugar cane instead of using molasses) and aged in glass demijohns before bottling. The rum, which will be appreciated by any proudly South African dad, is perfect for sipping over ice, or even for using in a multitude of cocktail recipes. Aromas of freshly cut cane lead to a natural bouquet of floral and tropical flavours and

a whisper of fresh vegetal, reminiscent of classic Rhum Agricole. It’s a tangy, smooth rum with a rounded warmth, perfect for the cooler months.

FOR THE GIN PRINCE

Another local favourite is the South African winner under the 2024 World Gin Awards’ category for the World’s Best London Dry Gin. KWV’s Cruxland Kalahari Truffle is infused with Kalahari truffles and brings together the area-specific truffle and nine South African botanicals. In addition, the most recent in this gin collection is the Cruxland Gin infused with Black Winter Truffles. In this gin, the rare Périgord truffles - originally exclusive to Southern Europe, but now also cultivated in select South African regions - merge wonderfully with an impressive thirteen botanicals. The result is a complex gin filled with flavour.

FOR THE BEER BRO

It’s not too long ago that Heineken® released their Heineken® Silver – an impressively refreshing beer, brewed using an ice-cold lagering process at -1°C. The 4% premium lager boasts a crisp and subtle finish, complete with the brand’s original signature fruit aroma which your dad is accustomed to. This version is just extra fresh, perfect for the freshest dad! H

THE SIDECAR

30 ml Rémy Martin 1738

Accord Royal 20 ml Cointreau 10 ml lemon juice

Pour 30 ml Rémy Martin 1738 Accord Royal, 20 ml Cointreau and 10 ml lemon juice into a shaker filled with ice. Strain and pour into a coupette glass. Finish with an orange peel for a rich flavour or lemon peel for freshness.

THE SIDECAR

A cocktail recipe for Father’s Day

We’ve gone in search for the perfect cocktail recipe for Father’s Day and after tasting he Sidecar at The Queens in Cape Town, we could not resist sharing a similar recipe with you. Finally, we came across Rémy Martin’s Royal Sidecar – a cocktail that’s in a

league of its own. If you have a dad who’s also in a league of his own, perhaps this cocktail would then fit the bill for celebrating Father’s Day…

The Sidecar - a cognac cocktail with an enchanting story - is said to have been created in 1921, with the Ritz Paris making a deluxe version of the

drink in 1923. It was named after a motorcycle sidecar owned by a man in Paris. Later, London popularised it and now, it’s literally a tale of two cities.

The Sidecar is a well-balanced classic that will most certainly go down well. H

THE TERRACE

Ground The Venue embroiders the outskirts of Joburg, with The Terrace’s bohemian flair inviting you to take things chicly slow.

It's not been around that long, yet we're already smitten with The Terrace’s small plate offering, its sensational light and its bohemian flair. Located at the popular Ground The Venue, The Terrace sits just off Muldersdrift's Driefontein Road, with a tidy entrance inviting passersby to take a turn.

At times, the background music transported us to outstretched fields of flowers and at other times, we felt like dancing to the beat on a Mediterranean beach. A Bohemian air lingers here; one that urges you to slow down and enjoy the moment, especially during the week. Popular for its wedding venue, picnics and hikes, Ground The Venue has become a well-known weekend attraction for both Joburg and Pretoria residents. Now, with the addition of The Terrace (which opened its doors in October last year) it brings yet another lovely, slow offering with a Southern European feel.

We kicked off the luncheon sipping on a mocktail dubbed the Soba Cobra as we sat back into laidback Malawi cane chairs

propped with cushions in neutral colours. Cacti in teal-coloured pots secured a pop of colour in a generally beige, but beautiful setting. Music from the bar set the tone for the possibility of lingering a little longer, calling up a couple of friends and staying for after-work cocktails on the outskirts of the city.

Starters came in the form of freshly baked olive bread and a delightful Melitzonsalata dip, consisting of roasted aubergine, garlic and parsley. What followed was a bowl of delicious Moules Frites, a mussel pot with skinny French fries on the side. In this dish, we could literally taste the sea and for a moment we were transported to what we could only imagine the Amalfi Coast should feel like. A light breeze kept stealing our serviettes from our laps and was partly culpable in our sudden burst of wanderlust. After grabbing a third napkin,

we dove into the side of frites, lightly salted and the perfect complement to the mussels. Of course, with the leftover sauce from the mussels, it was a match made in heaven.

When we couldn’t decide on a dessert (in hindsight, we probably should have just gone for the Baklava Ice Cream) we opted for a classic Americano, which came with a delicious shortbread biscuit – the perfect finale to a fabulously slow lunch.

If you are keen on a midweek breath of fresh air over lunch, The Terrace is the place to escape to. The staff are attentive and friendly and the venue is vibey, while setting the scene for slow living. There is even a Great Dane that comes to say hi every now and again. H

They have recently brought back their dinner shows, which makes the experience even more special. Working with trusted professional performers, Eclipse guides diners to another world where imaginations can run free. Acrobats have various tricks up their sleeves and utilise Eclipse Restaurant’s space to the full, with tumbles and turns from the ceiling, but also handstands and splits on the performance floor between the tables, each

paired with chairs in different colours and patterns.

The food at Eclipse Restaurant is of a high standard and guests can expect to have various courses during the dinner performance. When we visited, the meal kicked off with fresh bread and butter, whereafter we indulged in delicious Spiced Lamb Crouquettes, elegantly garnished with toasted curry leaves. For balance, we also ordered the Classic Caesar Salad, which was pretty much a meal in its own. The main course came in the form of Confit Duck Leg, as well as a Seafood Linguini. The duck was served with a creamy sweet potato risotto, honey roasted baby

carrots, roast butternut puree and a citrus jus. The alternative was a seafood pasta, which came with pan roasted tiger prawns, mussels, calamari, chili and garlic. Simply divine. Finally, we ended the meal off with a Baked Vanilla Cheesecake, coupled with Mascarpone ice cream, burnt meringue and a sweet, sumptuous honey jelly. When it comes to baked cheesecake, this is one we can highly recommend. As we savoured every bite, two singers entertained discerning diners and engaged with their audience without being intrusive.

At a cosy launch of the brand-new SEC Restaurant, led by visionary Chef Dario de Angeli, we got to indulge in revolutionary small plates galore. In fact, the culinary mastermind’s unique dishes are certainly raising the bar for any other restaurants in the area.

And, since Chef Dario is so renowned for his innovative approach, we can confirm that the menu will blow your mind. SEC’s culinary philosophy is that of a harmonious blend of tradition and innovation, wellness and indulgence. The items on the menu are bespoke; a testament to Chef Dario’s dedication to authenticity and exploration. We tasted numerous items on the menu. Milanese Risotto with ox bone marrow and saffron; Risotto with green peas, asparagus, water spinach and Pecarino; Beluga Lentil Tartare with Mascarpone, red onion, truffle fennel, ponzu, tomato kirimi, yuzu pearls and crispy leaks.

Further to this, we had Tom Yum, which consisted of prawns, fish broth, fish sauce, chilli, tomato, mushrooms, lime and coriander. The Hug in a Bowl – chicken with a poached egg yolk, truffle, confit garlic, sage, potato, dim sum and a king oyster – was just as divine. And, we were even surprised with some local inspired small plates like cow heels. We can highly recommend the Duck with Muhammara, pomegranate balsamico, citrus, crispy basil, amadlavudlavu and angel hair chilli. Oh, and the ostrich, served with oyster sauce, dates, beetroot, seeds, nuts, kewpie, ginger and sweet potato.

CURVE GEAR, CLEARWATER MALL

Having started the brand only three years ago, Curve Gear was born from industrial roots, with their mother company being a leading Original Equipment Manufacturer of heavy-duty slurry pumps, namely the ‘Curve’ range of slurry pumps. What started as a brand extension project, took off rapidly after its inception, leading to Curve Gear’s swift and remarkable development. They soon brought out their Lithium Vellie range with beautiful vellies for either the boardroom, a braai or the bush. Says Neill Kropman, the brand’s Global Brand &

Marketing Manager: “That’s when things really started taking off for us.” These shoes aren’t just your everyday ‘veldskoen.’ No, their vellies are of the highest quality, made locally with good-quality leather.

Staying true to their roots, they do still sell premium safety boots in-store, though. These are meant for a premium buyer who likes to elevate his look.

We’re all for capsule wardrobes and when they have a special meaning attached to them, so much more! Curve Gear’s capsule

collections constantly rotate to celebrate a facet of engineering. “Because our roots are in engineering, slurry pumps and the industrial world,” says Neill. “Every six months, we bring out a new range.” It started off with Aviation, moving on to motorcycles. Now, keep an eye out for the new winter capsule, which will be a military / utility styled capsule.

STOKING THE FLAMES OF REBELLIOUS CUISINE EMBER & OAK

#HelloCapeTown by Sharon Waugh Images: Supplied

In a Constantia-based heritage cottage, a neon sign depicting a somewhat offensive hand gesture glows proudly, while bold wallpaper and a defaced Mona Lisa look down on diners.

This is Ember & Oak, the new restaurant run by husband-andwife team, Tim and Judy Pick.

Tim uses 18 years of fine dining experience to whip up a culinary masterpiece. Then, he presents it in the lid of a cardboard egg carton as if it somehow wasn’t worthy of a plate. Wealthy Constantia residents are eating off enamel-coated tin plates for the first time in their lives, yet when you sample the food served on these plates, it’s hard to be anything but impressed.

JUNE - JULY 2024 l hellolifestyle.co.za 40

Tim honed his skills under some of South Africa’s most elite chefs, including Franck Dangereux, James Gaag and Scot Kirton at establishments like Foxcroft and La Colombe. While he has nothing but respect for these masters, he does however have a certain disdain for what he refers to as “the pompous stuff” often associated with fine dining. This translates into a restaurant experience that is charmingly irreverent in every way.

Ember & Oak serves a relatively short menu of small plates with flavours and influences from all over the world. Highlights include the meltingly tender Moroccan Lamb which is perfectly complemented by crunchy pistachio dukkah and harissa. The Duck Tacos are an exquisite combination of tender meat, velvety molé and vibrant pineapple pico de gallo, served in a soft taco. The Linefish Chapati also impresses, but it’s easy to see why the Cape Malay Cauli is one of the favourites. Inspired by a traditional snoek braai, this unintentionally vegan delight pays homage to local flavours, blending coconut, curry and apricot.

Located on a Constantia wine farm, the meal would not be complete if not paired with just the right wine and, in this case, one with Ember & Oak’s distinctive flair. Listed under the ‘Panty Droppers’ section of the drinks menu is the Chardonnay Slushy and the Frozen Aperol Margarita. Alternatively, you can have a blend of the two in the form of a Tiger Bite, named as such because “it has stripes and it bites.”

Tim explains that most of the food is cooked on an open flame, hence the ‘Ember’ in the name. ‘Oak’ refers to the wine barrels associated with the area. To us, it feels that they are the ember, stoking an irreverent flame under the oak of Cape Town’s fine dining scene, with their cheekily impressive dishes served in an endearingly casual way. H

SONNY + IRENE

We have featured them before, but this pink paradise with its flamingo-inspired interiors has left an impression during our recent visit to Cape Town’s City Bowl. Not only do they serve exquisite cuisine, but the interiors, with its beautiful light fittings and white pillars with flamingo cut-outs for detail certainly impress. In addition, each drink and dish happen to blend in perfectly with the interiors. From the Glow Juice (freshly squeezed orange juice with ginger and more) to the Strawberry Milkshakes, to the flatbreads with the most divine humus - it's all so wonderfully prepared and impressively aesthetic. If you're in Cape Town, it's a must.

MARKET HOPPING

Cape Town is known for its many markets – some with a rich history; others with global flair. Greenmarket Square was established in the 17th century and based in the heart of Cape Town, it is a still a popular destination for both locals and tourists looking for crafts, textiles, jewellery and curios. Come prepared as haggling is expected. The Old Biscuit Mill has also come a long way and located in the lively Woodstock neighbourhood, it is a trendy shopping destination which brings together local artisans, designers and food vendors. Here you will find various boutiques and studios for unique clothing, accessories and homeware. Of course, the Neighbourhood Goods Market, which takes place on Saturdays, is the perfect outing for those keen on gourmet food, crafts and live music. Kalk Bay in itself is also worth visiting, with an eclectic mix of quirky boutiques, antique shops and art galleries to explore. Stroll along the main street and pop into the various stores for some exciting and interesting finds.

SKYRUN

In search of something that will allow you to test your boundaries? SkyRun was founded by John Michael Tawse at the end of 1991, when he traversed the Witteberge alone from Lady Grey to Wartrail Country Club. His pioneering spirit was carried forth by Adrian Saffy who took over as race organiser in 2005 and soon after that, Michael De Haast joined Adrian and Pure Adventures was formed. Today, SkyRun – which has now been around for the past 30 years – still keeps true to its essence in that it remains a self-supported and self-navigational run. That means, you need to carry all you require, and you need to use a GPS to find your way as the route is unmarked. K-Way South Africa has just renewed its sponsorship for both the SkyRun and the MaxiRace Cape Winelands, remaining steadfast in its commitment to continuously bringing the joy of trail and mountain running to enthusiasts around the globe. “We are thrilled to renew our partnership with SkyRun and MaxiRace Cape Winelands,” says Odile Hufkie, Marketing Manager of K-Way. “These events embody the essence of exploration and perseverance, values that resonate deeply with K-Way, and the Cape Union Mart business. Through our sponsorship, we aim to inspire individuals to push their boundaries and embrace the beauty of the great outdoors.” The entries for SkyRun 2024 is open, with the event to take place on 16 and 17 November this year, while the MaxiRace Cape Winelands takes place on 28 September.

GO WELLINGTON

Thinking slow village mornings, fine food and wine afternoons that turn into evenings, and soaring mountain spires? These are but a few of the delights of the Cape’s magnificent Wellington region. The Wellington Wine Route recently underwent a bit of a revival and as a fresh wind that blows, it brings with it a new Go Wellington identity that invites young and old to visit and explore. It is time to go just a little further than the Mother City. It’s a mere 55 minute drive from Cape Town’s CBD, a 40 minute drive from Stellenbosch and a 60 minute drive from Franschhoek or Worcester. "People think Wellington is really remote, whereas the contrary is true,” says Go Wellington’s chairman, David Sonnenberg. “In fact, very few places can boast being off the beaten track within such close proximity to major centres.” Wellington’s essence is defined by its mountains. For others, it’s the history reflected in the classical architecture, as well as the award-winning wineries and distilleries of the region that make them want to visit. The bottom line is that Wellington is a wholesome country community with heart and that is reason enough to Go Wellington.

PUZZLES

Mingling after the match

#HelloJoburg

Those who are active and often find themselves mingling beside the rugby field might know about the eatery that recently opened its doors, overlooking the Pretoria Rugby Club. It seems to be the final piece of the puzzle, elevating the club’s location even further and offering the perfect get-together spot to those who just finished a HIIT session at the Willow Way Gym next door or a rugby or soccer match on the field.

For this reason, we think the restaurant's name, Puzzles, is very apt. While it seems like the final piece of the puzzle, the inspiration behind the name actually comes from something completely different: An episode of ‘How I Met Your Mother!’ Remember Barney? Fans of the series will recall an episode where he wanted to open a restaurant and call it Puzzles. When his friends asked him why he wanted to call it Puzzles, he merely said: "Well, that's the puzzle!"

There is no puzzle to why you would want to visit this eatery, though. Apart from views across the outstretched field in front of you, they also have a rather impressive kiddies' play area (which immediately caught our attention). The huge jungle gym comes with all the bells and whistles and outdoor seating allows for parents to keep a close eye on their littles. There is even a pathway on which children can ride their bikes.

Of course, here, it's mainly about the food and drink, isn't it? The smallish menu boasts many favourites - specially for those who keep coming back to their meal of choice - with some of the best sweet potato fries and zucchini fries you'll find in Gauteng. Well-known local chef, Pellie Grobler offered his guidance when it comes to the menu, with some brilliant sauces

and flavours that undoubtedly elevates any rump steak or burger.

Spending quality time with friends and family is ultimately what the idea around Puzzles was from the start - a place where people can come together. Gert, Janie and Herman Kriel, together with Marthinus Roodt certainly

got the recipe right here, with ample to enjoy for both adults and kids. That counts for food, entertainment and even the backgrouand music, featuring various classics, including remixes from the nineties. P.S. The kids will highly recommend Puzzles' Pork Ribs. H

PRETORIA

The City of Jacarandas

Pretoria is probably one of the best cities to be in when winter arrives. While the cooler months do come with days that merit the lighting of a fire, midday is often mild and wonderful. This means that even though the weather is cooler than usual, you still get to be outdoors and not be too cold, which is why many dining destinations and events venues will continue to offer outdoor seating, with the added bonus of a blanket draped across the chair and perhaps a lit fireplace (often more for the atmosphere than the heat).

PASTA BARRA

Le Riche’s launch of their Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2022 lured us to Pasta Barra early in May and now, we’re fans not only of the wine, but also of the Pretoria restaurant in which we had it. The kitchen – located in the middle of the eatery – allows for guests to watch as chefs go about preparing their meals. And, the meals are perfectly prepared. We indulged in a three course, which was paired with a list of Le Riche’s Cabernet Sauvignons – the varietal their winemaker, Christo Le Riche says they are “actually quite stupid about.” We also had their divine Chardonnay as a welcoming drink, but it is Cabernet Sauvignon and its prosperity in the Stellenbosch region that Le Riche has been focusing on and will continue to focus on in years to come. Just as Le Riche has found its niche, we believe Pasta Barra’s gnocchi needs to be tasted by every Pretorian. We also had a delicious prawn and avo dish, beautifully plated and known as a favourite at the restaurant. Our main meal was a tender piece of fillet with flavours to write home about.

LÉPIS DORÉ BAKERY AND BISTRO

Subtly hidden away amidst the hustle and bustle of Hazelwood, Lépis Doré is the perfect brunch spot for those looking for a cosy al fresco eatery. Large windows – which can either be thrown wide open, or kept closed – make you feel as if you’re dining outdoors either way and their breakfast menu is filled with a wide variety of options under various country-inspired sections. We opted for the Uitsmijter, a typical Dutch breakfast with eggs, ham and mustard, and paired it with a proper Café au lait. This restaurant translates into the perfect daytime date spot just as well as it does into a meet up spot for friends and family. Its location is ideal too, with HAUS by Hertex being based just across the street, luring homemakers and big dreamers alike. Hazelwood’s The Village shops and alleys also invite you for a slow stroll while basking in the subtle warmth of Pretoria’s winter sun.

CRÈME DE LA CRÈME

AT CLEOPATRA MOUNTAIN FARMHOUSE

The farm, Cleopatra, has been in the Poynton family since the 1940s. It is here where Chef Richard Poynton and his wife, Mouse built what Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse is today: A haven for anyone looking for a culinary retreat.

Chef Richard Poynton’s claim to fame is cooking with butter and cream. His food is filled with flavour and the sauces he has created over the years have become known to add surprise to every dish.

Our stay at Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse revolved around breakfasts, light lunches and the main event: Cleopatra's famous dinners - all served in the main restaurant beside the lake. While the interiors may seem dated to many, it pretty much serves as a museum, portraying much of Durban and the Midlands' history, including the Poynton family. It brings things full circle, enriching each bite with a sense of family pride and nostalgia and adding to the overall experience.

Dinners were preceded by drinks, a tradition we quickly came to love. We got to go down to the Cellarium, where Chef Poynton's impressive collection of wines is stored each night and choose a wine to pair with our meal.

The Ibhansela Encane - a gift from the chef - then kicked off the evening in the form of freshly baked bread rolls served with butter.

A Marinated Beetroot dish followed, with beetroot Créme Fraîche, Chevin goats cheese in chives, a greenhouse herb mix, pistachio nuts and a sultana balsamic dressing. The third course was a typical Sweetcorn Chowder, served with diced

potato, a little plain yoghurt and a dash of extra virgin olive oil.

A Berry Granita was served (as they always do) after the third course, to clean the palate and to give us a moment to prepare for main course.

Then, we indulged in a deliciously prepared Norwegian Salmon

Parcel, topped with thinly sliced ginger and garlic, complemented with a Thai chili sauce. This was served with prawns, steamed broccoli and oven baked Mediterranean potato chips.

We finally ended off the evening with a homemade Vanilla Terrine with Black Cherries, Cherry Liqueur and full cream sherry.

Chef Poynton remains the head chef at Cleopatra, keeping a watchful eye over what goes into the pots. Still, the team behind the kitchen doors have become like family and they can do much of the cooking with their eyes closed. H

WILD COAST SUN

The Wild Coast Sun has recently welcomed a new executive chef. Georgina Hill says she did 20 000 steps on her first day at Wild Coast Sun. “This property is just huge, but it is absolutely beautiful. If you’re stressed you step outside and take in the ocean. It’s a different world.” She undoubtedly rules her kitchen brigade with a firm hand while inviting a sense of collaboration. “You can’t achieve anything alone – I need my team beside me,” she says. Chef Hill is a practising vegetarian, which means she is fully onboard with vegan and gluten-free dietary requirements too. She has, however, tried all types of meat and she is perfectly comfortable cooking everything – from a slow braised lamb shank to a mutton curry. “It is challenging to cook with ingredients you don’t eat, because how can you cook it if you don’t know what it’s supposed to taste like. So, I try everything at least once,” she says. Diners at the Wild Coast Sun can now expect more vegetarian, gluten-free and vegan dishes popping up on the resort’s buffet and menus. “We have been refining the menus slowly and changing things up. Many of the chefs have been here a long time, so I am focused on upskilling the team. We try to use what is locally produced so that ingredients don’t have to be brought in from Johannesburg. Finally, Chef Hill says: “As a chef you are never too old to learn, so keep trying new things. Sometimes they flop, but almost everything can be rescued. Make sure you have fun cooking because you can taste the love in the food.”

FABLE'S TAP ROOM

Based on Curry's Post near Howick, this foodie destination is much more than a wedding venue. Apart from a restaurant fit for breakfast, brunch and lunch, there is also the Tap Room which is open until 21:00, offering those keen on a dinner with a vibe the option to enjoy craft beers and delicious, unique cuisine. Dinner kicked off with a bowl of herbed, woodfired nuts, after which we opted for a pizza, which was simply delicious and more than enough for two. Their black board against the wall convinced us to order some after dinner drinks too and we went for the classic Irish Coffee. What we loved about this dining space, was its unique interior with rustic brick walls brought to life with beautiful animal paintings. Blankets were draped over the chairs for the cooler nights, making for a cosy atmosphere in combination with the pizza oven.

We loved the granola bowl, which included granola from Sally's just across from Home Slice, which adds to the local and homemade atmosphere the eatery seems to aspire to (and inspire). The avo on toast was just as delicious. When you stay at The Old Mushroom Farm's stunning new apartments, your breakfast at Home Slice Café is included. This includes a meal (from a specially curated menu for stayover guests) and coffee or tea. You can also order from the main menu too, but you might have to then pay the difference.

Piggly Wiggly has always been a Midlands favourite for us. It's outdoors and fit for the whole family, with lots of kiddies' entertainment and shops to explore. They also do events and birthday parties, which add to their wonderful offering. Let the kids have fun at Muddy Puddles Play Café and let them improve their sport skills at the Mini Golf. There is also a farm and reptile park for the animal lovers under us, and creatives can have a go at candle dipping. Cure the cravings at Chocolate Heaven and then, let the kids choose between The Piggy Zip or a mini train ride with Lions River Railway.

VICTORIA STREET MARKET

The Victoria Street Market is the oldest market in Durban and it was built on the site of the 1910 Indian Market, which means there is a lot of history attached to it. The market offers more than 200 stalls to stroll past, with the building housing a wonderful blend of India and Africa. Locally referred to as The Vic, you can find anything from luggage and fabrics to souvenirs and spices here.

ISIMANGALISO

WETLAND PARK

Visit South Africa’s very first UNESCO World Heritage Site and see why it’s so special! If you are a keen birder, this would be your paradise. You might also spot sea turtles here, as well as crocodiles, hippos and elephants – animals that make their homes further inland. It is recommended that you explore the area by boat, which will allow you to truly understand the incredible diversity that can be found here.

WE JUST WENT ON A MOMCATION at Club Med Seychelles

JUNE - JULY 2024 l hellolifestyle.co.za 62
#HelloLifestyle by Renate Engelbrecht Images: Renate Engelbrecht

It was quiet as we strolled past the deserted family pool at 06:00. Soon, it would be abuzz with littles and laughter, luring parents and their kids to enjoy some quality family time while overlooking the azure Seychellois waters. While we were at Club Med Seychelles for a momcation, we couldn't help but miss those little munchkins whom would have never allowed us to lie in had they come with.

We walked down to the beach just to breathe in the Seychellois air and have a moment of quiet, which moms don't get very often. It was blissfully beautiful. Soft waves slowly rippled in, lightly touching our toes. Not too far out, a luxury yacht lay on the peaceful water, giving us a glimpse of the high life, complete with a slide that takes its passengers straight into the warm water under it. But wait, we were living the high life too... Just on the island of St Anne!

SCOUTING FOR THE PERFECT FAMILY HOLIDAY

Visiting Club Med without the kids boasted the perfect scouting opportunity. In fact, we've been convinced that the resort and its offering justify two annual visits: One for a momcation (or perhaps even a dadcation, since Father’s Day is just around the corner). Then, a return visit with the family.

LIVING THE BEST LIFE ON ST ANNE

Club Med Seychelles is located on St Anne Island, which is home to the resort exclusively. White beaches dotted with loungers and umbrellas lace the resort and as you walk beside the beautifully coloured water toward the Zen Pool and adult beach (yes, there is that too) you can spot various sea creatures from atop a meandering wooden bridge. It's island vibes to the max at Club Med, with the benefit of it being all-inclusive. Walking about on the island, you’re bound to bump into one or two of the island’s resident Giant Seychellois Tortoises too – a must-see for anyone new to the island.

PACE YOURSELF

With all food and drinks being included in your stay, we had to pace ourselves. In fact, we often opted for delicious mocktails during the day, in order to enjoy that glass of wine and perhaps a proper island-style Mojito at night. A cute little tag around our arms allowed us access to everything (except the spa, which, together with French champagne before 18:00 was at an additional cost).

Breakfasts were served at the main restaurant, spilling over to the pool area and offering magnificent views of the beach. The spread was almost intimidating, hence no breakfast was ever the same as we just had to try

everything! Then, the day was our oyster. Lunch was often served in the same space. Alternatively, they had a local beach braai or lunch at the Zen Pool’s restaurant. Dinners also depended on the weather and the vibe, but always came with some kind of a theme, be it floral, all white or Club 45.

KEEPING BUSY, BUT IN A DIFFERENT LIGHT

Club Med Seychelles' offering of activities is endless. From padel and yoga hikes, to kayaking in glass kayaks, sailing and standup paddling, we were certainly kept busy. Access to other islands can easily be arranged by the Club Med Seychelles team and our day trip to Praslin and La Digue was a definite highlight. A quick boat trip back to Mahe, where you hop on a small Air Seychelles plane to Praslin, and later on a ferry to La Digue - it's a full day's outing, but worth every minute.

Praslin is known for the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Valée de Mai Nature Reserve, which draws many a tourist to explore the secrets of the Coco de Mer. Here, traces of a natural palm forest have been preserved in almost its original state. La Digue, on the other hand, boasts the perfect island escape, complete with rented bicycles, cocktails in coconuts, azure vistas and granite rock formations that will take your breath away.

WHY CLUB MED IS PERFECT FOR A MOMCATION

While moms would always wish they could share the experience with their kids and their family, Club Med is just as well equipped for

a momcation as for an all-inclusive family holiday. Why? Because here, you get to do things (at no additional cost) only for you. Whether you want to learn to sail, Standup Paddle or play padel, there are instructors at your beck and call and you can do a different activity each day. You also get to spend time with yourself, in your own thoughts, and perhaps even work through something, come up with solutions to problems you've been struggling with, or just relax after a stressful couple of months. In fact, you might just go back home rejuvenated and revived.

For us, seeing other moms' reactions to the experience was one of the highlights of the trip. Mom-alone, we all travelled to the island of St Anne, not knowing what to expect, but eager to find out what a momcation entails. And, we were all left speechless. Feelings of gratitude, love, appreciation, kindness, self-love and peace constantly lingered in the air, as well as a strong mom-bond between us all. From sipping Champagne in the shallow waters during Club Med's signature sunset ritual, to dancing the night away during their evening events and jumping into the Zen Pool like teenagers, it was a riveting experience no mama would ever forget.

Go, get lost on St Anne Island and find yourself again. Go be who you are and keep that vibrant version of yourself close to the surface for all to see when you return. Then, bring the family! H

COSY STAYS ALONG THE MIDLANDS

MEANDER

The KwaZulu Natal Midlands is one of the regions in South Africa that we have found is often overlooked. Yet, this time of the year, it’s the perfect place to be, with beautiful days and cosy evenings that make for unforgettable moments.

#HelloLifestyle by Renate

Images: Renate Engelbrecht

The Midlands are known for its beautiful scenery, but also its rich history. In fact, there is a Midlands Meander with five different routes to follow. So, whether you’re a foodie, a fisherman, a birder or an art lover, there is something for everyone. Here is where we would suggest you escape to this winter, with the Midlands’ five routes as guideline:

HILTON TO BOSTON

About 49km

WHAT TO SEE

This route runs through the towns of Merrivale, Howick and Mpophomeni to Karkloof, which is a birders’ paradise. You’ll also find the Karkloof Conservation Centre here, as well as a lovely farmer’s market, situated right next to The Old Mushroom Farm. Karkloof Tours boasts numerous adventurous activities for you to take part in and the Midmar Dam and Midmar Resort are also in the area – famous for fishing and water sports.

WHERE TO STAY

The Old Mushroom Farm’s owners have two accommodation options close to the Midmar Dam worth checking out. The one is called Hill House and the other, Lakehouse. Little Fields Country House is also a lovely little spot to consider. The Old Mushroom Farm itself also has numerous accommodation options available, with the latest being their new apartments, which boast either one or two rooms.

CURRY’S POST TO MOUNT WEST

About 23km

WHAT TO SEE

This is one of the shorter Midlands Meander routes. It traverses from outside Howick, through to Balgowan and Curry’s Post to Mount West. It passes the Troutbagger Trout Farm, an Alpaca farm, as well as Basket Weavers and will most certainly ensure some great roadside entertainment. Pop in at leather factories en route. The popular Windmills Country Stop is also on this route, with ample space to stretch your legs and to grab a bite to eat. There are jungle gyms and lovely gardens too, so even the kids would enjoy this short trip. Brahman Hills is located next door to Windmills, boasting an impressive spa and various other activities.

WHERE TO STAY

Brahman Hills’ accommodation is trendy and stylish, with various options to choose from. Their self-catering cottages are the more private option and come with Jacuzzis and fireplaces, offering a memorable country stay.

JUNE - JULY 2024 l hellolifestyle.co.za 64

DARGLE TO NOTTINGHAM ROAD

About 29km

WHAT TO SEE

Travel between Fort Nottingham and the backroads of the Dargle Valley where you will be amazed by forests and birdlife galore. There are trails to take, shops to visit, farm stalls to explore and various eateries to try out on this route. Also be sure to check out the Lavendar Company, Woodturner and Shuttleworths’ Mohair rugs.

WHERE TO STAY

We’d opt for AfriCamps at Gowan Valley, which we can highly recommend. Brookdale Health Hydro is another accommodation option here, offering visitors the ideal environment for time-out, selfreflection and contemplation. They also have a day spa. Or, check out the top-rated Lavendar Trout Farm.

LIONS RIVER TO NOTTINGHAM ROAD

About 27km

WHAT TO SEE

Travel along the R103 through Lidgetton and Balgowan and stop at the Nelson Mandela Capture Site. You can also see the famous Michaelhouse on this route and get some arts and crafts souvenirs along the way. The route is also home to Swissland Cheese Farm, various farm stalls and factory shops. Also, stopping at Highgate Wine Estate for lunch and a wine tasting comes highly recommended and Piggly Wiggly is also on this route – something any parent travelling with kids would be happy to know. Just off this route, you’ll also find shops like Tsonga and Ardmore Ceramic Art. For the foodies, the toprated Mini Me Patisserie & Bistro is also located on this route, as is the Bierfassl Restaurant and Pub for those keen on a German beer and Bratwurst.

WHERE TO STAY

The popular Granny Mouse Country House & Spa is on this route, which was founded by Richard and Mouse Poynton who are now the owners of Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse.

MOOI RIVER TO GIANT’S CASTLE

About 46km

WHAT TO SEE

While this road is currently in a terrible state, it’s still a beautiful drive along the Loteni Road and Kamberg Valley Pass. This region is home to the Kamberg Nature Reserve and it’s the closest route of all five to the Drakensberg Mountains. From here, you can take various hiking trails and even spot some Khoisan paintings.

WHERE TO STAY

If you don’t feel like turning back and would like to spend a romantic weekend at a culinary gem right next to Highmoor, we recommend staying at the beautiful Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse. (Read all about our culinary experience under the Durban section of this edition). H

DESTINATIONS FOR A DATE WITH DAD

#HelloLifestyle by

Supplied

Father's Day comes as a reminder of why a dad - or even just a father figure - is so important and so special. That is why we believe spending some quality time with that special person - whether it's your real dad, an adopted dad or even just a dad figure - is one of the best ways to show them that they are appreciated. Here are four destinations we have identified as the perfect go-to places for a date with dad:

DULLSTROOM WITH YOUR DAD

Not too far from Joburg, the town of Dullstroom and its surrounds offer some of the most beautiful spots where you can bring your dad to for some bonding time. Being one of South Africa's fly-fishing meccas, you're sure to have the best time as most places offer fishing gear, flies and more for you to rent and go fishing. It's the perfect opportunity for deep conversations and quality time for sure. Whether it's a one-on-one fishing trip for just you and your dad, or a trip for the whole family, the area boasts various accommodation options to choose from, including some really neat Airbnb stays.

We like the ‘Woud Blokhuis’ – a luxury timber cabin encircled by forests, which is walking distance from restaurants, shops, hiking, flyfishing and mountain biking trails. You’ll find it on Airbnb.

Q @airbnb

BRING DAD TO DINOKENG

Dinokeng is a mere 30 minutes' drive from Pretoria and once you're there, it is as if you have landed in a whole other world. The Big 5 reserve has many options when it comes to self-catering stays, lodges and camp sites, but we highly recommend the latter. Book your camping spot through www.dinokengreserve. co.za and live a little with your dad. Remember to pack the S'mores!

FARM STAYS FOR THE FAMILY

Stay at The Old Mushroom Farm in one of their brand-new apartments. They have opened these apartments to the public at the end of last year and apart from its very unique architecture and décor, it offers a great farm stay for the family while also boasting ample things to do on the farm, as well as in the surrounding area. Located in the Karkloof region, you can easily go hiking or mountain biking and the Midmar Dam is just around the corner if you're keen on water sports.

Q @theoldmushroomfarm

WINE AND ART FOR FATHER'S DAY

Spier has recently won numerous prizes for their wines and we think that is reason enough to treat your dad to a day out in the Stellenbosch wine region. The wine farm is so much more than just a producer of good wine. If your dad likes art, take him to their on-site gallery. If he enjoys being outdoors, spoil him with a picnic, or even a Segway tour.

The Cowshed - a mixture of an art gallery and a 'padstal' - is also worth popping into while you're there. It is based in one of Spier's oldest buildings, The Werf, and holds products that honour ethical craftsmanship and support creative entrepreneurs. While celebrating your own dad and his presence in your life, you ultimately get to give back and help other dads mean something to their families too.

TO COSY UP YOUR HOME FOR COOLER DAYS WAYS 7

Kahlil Gibran said: “Kindness is like snow. It beautifies everything it covers.” This winter, we’re planning to cover our homes in kindness, beautifying it with simple elements and kind gestures. We’ve been looking for simple ways to cosy up our homes and these are our favourite options.

1

TEXTURE

Whether it’s a carpet, a cushion or a cupboard, texture makes your house seem more homy in an instant. Naturalcoloured scatter cushions will invite you to take a seat on the couch and a beautiful coffee or cocktail station with textured doors is sure to set the scene. For those who like slow living and prefer the comfy seat on the floor, a soft carpet or rug will most certainly do the trick.

2

CANDLES

If you ask us, dinner by candlelight will never go out of style. Nor will a bath by candlelight (coupled with a fluffy bathmat and soft towels), or just a normal Saturday night with romantic light. We love candles as they serve up a hint of nostalgia in a world where everything is fast tracked and at the click of a button. Whether it’s dual purpose for mozzies and flies, or

to add a special scent to your home, candles are a must if you’d like to cosy up your home. P.S. Check out Cape Island’s Heritage Collection, a proud and deep connection to all things South African, featuring four different fragrances.

JUNE - JULY 2024 l hellolifestyle.co.za 68

3

MEMORABLE WALL ART

Speaking of nostalgia, we believe that memories don’t just warm the heart; they also warm your home. So, why not invest in some beautiful frames in which to hang your most special family photos? That way, you get to see them every day instead of them just lying in a folder on your laptop.

4

HURKLE-DURKLE IN LAVISH LINEN

Do you know the Scottish term, hurkle-durkle? It means to get back into bed after you’ve woken up, just to indulge in the joys of soft blankets and coffee and a book in bed. We love it and it most certainly makes for a cosy moment or two as you are conscious about getting up slowly. Be sure to add a furry throw or a fluffy blanket to your bed to make it extra cosy.

5 SWITCH THE LIGHTING TONE

Ever notice the difference when you switch your cool lightbulbs to warm? It instantly romanticizes a space and will most definitely cosy up your home. Just be sure to change them all to the same hue to keep your house from appearing like a disco.

6

DECORATIVE BASKETS ARE EVERYTHING

While a decluttered home is great, a decluttered home with a cosy feel to it is so much better. Baskets are perfect for decluttering while simultaneously adding a touch of homeliness to a space.

7

FRESH, FLUFFY TOWELS

Bring in some fluffy bath sheets, towels and even robes if you like to bring warmer touches to your bathroom spaces. Who said it’s only the living room and the main bedroom that needs to be cosy? We’re all about cosying up the whole house in order to utilise every space to its max.

Feeling a hint of inspiration here? Go for it! H

ADAPTING TO ROADS LESS TRAVELLED

with the Audi Q3 35 TFSI

The long open road lay in front of us as we revved the engine. It's been too long since our last visit to the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands and the N3 highway was lined with golden grasslands and specks of Kosmos. This time of the year is probably the best time for a road trip to the Drakensberg, meandering the Midlands (okay, and just to keep things authentic, dodging potholes). Our ride: The Audi Q3 35 TFSI.

SNEAKY-SNEAKY

The vehicle has a sneaky way of drawing you in and making you fall in love with not only its looks, but also its personality. From the outside, the SUV seems rather compact and almost too small for a family. But, once you get in, it offers plenty of leg room both in front and at the back. It also has a large boot, which makes for easy weekend getaways. We easily fit two large travel bags, a medium-sized cool box, a vanity case and even a suit in a bag into the boot. Depending on the position of the back seats, you can get up to 675l in boot space in the Audi Q3 35 TFSI. In fact, when the backrests are folded down, it can go up to 1525l. The vehicle is also sneaky in the way it gets portrayed as an SUV for the city, while it can just as easily bring you and your family to a guest farm in the berg.

A FOR AUDI, ADAPT OR APT?

The Audi Q3 35 TFSI we meandered through the Midlands with, came with semi low-profile tyres, which - after seeing the state of many of the province's roads - we thought might pose a problem. Luckily, the car comes with different driving profiles and we quickly switched to offroad. It performed brilliantly (in combination with careful and considerate driving, of course) and effortlessly dodged potholes with nippy turns and trusty brakes. The vehicle has up to six different profiles to choose from - depending on the driving situation and road condition - ranging from convenient to efficient to sporty. At one point, we had to take a gravel road instead, as locals dubbed it the better road, and even then, the vehicle effortlessly floated over the untarred terrain.

how we experience the drive. The Audi Q3 certainly did not disappoint - from its sleek exterior to its minimalistic interior. The Singleframe grille is complemented by single-design headlights and make for a rather grand impression as it approaches. Inside, the dash is simple, yet elegant, with all the bells and whistles.

GET WITH THE TIMES

Since it's all new, you'll have to gear up and keep to the times. We were unable to charge our phones on the road, as we did not have the right charging cable for one of the trendiest vehicles on the road. There are, however, various interfaces through which you can connect your mobile device with the vehicle, with integrated Audi connect services that allow you to enjoy a host of digital features as you hit the road.

SILENCE, WE'RE SINGING

The hills of Highmoor had us singing the theme song of The Sound of Music in no time and the Q3 was impressively quiet on the road, allowing for some great road trip songs. Of course, these moments were made even more memorable with the vehicle's SONOS Premium Sound System, featuring 3D sound.

INEOS GRENADIER

The South African equine world is a unique blend of tradition, elegance and outdoor adventure. From the rugged fields where eventing tests the mettle of horse and rider, to the polished arenas where showjumping and dressage display the pinnacle of disciplined grace, each event is a celebration of equestrian duos. It’s a curious mix of outdoor adventure and high society, combining the country’s love for horses, community andof course - a good show at every event. TRANSFORMING

Behind the glitz and glamour, there is a golden rule that runs through the equine community: The standard at which your horses are cared for, transported and kitted up quickly determines your reputation in this competitive lifestyle.

Every horse owner or rider will tell you that they’re always looking for better ways to transport, store and organise all their gear - from tack to feed. This is why Equestrian House and SMH Grenadier Sandton have struck up a partnership to see how the INEOS Grenadier fares in this environment.

The Grenadier is an all-new vehicle brand owned by British businessman,

JUNE - JULY 2024 l hellolifestyle.co.za 74
EQUESTRIAN
LIFESTYLE

Sir Jim Ratcliffe. He saw a gap in the market for a tough, go-anywhere, off-road vehicle with the modern comfort, refinement and quality standards expected by today’s drivers. It’s the ideal equine vehicle as it is built to work hard, while still boasting all the premium features that make it an excellent daily or family vehicle as well.

Greg Wharram, founder of Equestrian House - SA’s premier equestrian tack, apparel and lifestyle store - says: “Equestrianism is as much a lifestyle as it is a sport and every horse, owner and rider is different. That’s why we make every effort to offer our customers wider ranges, better quality, access to new international brands and the latest in equine technology.”

This personalised approach is what led Scott Cawdry, Director and Dealer Principal at SMH Group, INEOS Automotive, to propose a partnership with Equestrian House. “The INEOS Grenadier is specifically designed so it can be easily adapted for all types of offroad use,” says Cawdry. “From its impressive towing capability with a trailer stability assistance system, to the side utility rails that can be used to hang tack or teff nets, the Grenadier is ideal for horse owners.”

Over the next few months, Wharram will be driving an INEOS Grenadier and putting the vehicle through its paces. From towing horse boxes to navigating muddy eventing fields, conducting saddle fittings and transporting all manner of equestrian equipment.

Aside from its towing and off-road capability, the INEOS Grenadier’s adaptable design is what makes it so appealing to equestrians. It melds perfectly with the lifestyle, offering ample space to double up as a mobile tack room and storage for feed at away shows. It also has no problem navigating the weatherbeaten and rugged roads that lead to many South African showgrounds.

“The Grenadier’s side runners, access ladder and roof racks are a revelation. I am already using these to organise everything from saddles to tack. Now, I can organise everything to ensure it’s on hand and easily accessible instead of having to rummage through a vehicle when the clock is ticking,” says Wharram. “I love the fact that the floor of the Grenadier can be hosed down and has plugs to let out the water. We all know what’s stuck underneath your shoes after a day of eventing or showjumping.”

Cawdry adds that the interior of the Grenadier is luxurious but also practical as all the buttons, the dials and the main screen are designed to be operated easily - perfectly suited to an equestrian’s lifestyle.

As for trendsetting, The INEOS Grenadier is an all-new, rugged off-roader that absolutely looks the part. It stands taller and broader

than most of its competitors and the interior has all the premium features you expect in a modern 4x4.

The fact that the Grenadier so easily adapts to suit the individual needs of every horse and rider plays right into the knowledge that convenience is the ultimate equine luxury. H

MONEY TALK

WHAT YOUNG INVESTORS SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THEIR MONEY

Entertainment, fashion, education, travel, accommodation and cell phone data… Did you know that South Africa’s young people spend their money mainly on these six things?

Among South Africa’s youth, investing for the future is a concept that has earned itself a reputation as being boring, too risky, too ‘adult’ or simply inaccessible. Ayanda Majola and Kagiso Tloubatla, co-founders of SV Capital, say it doesn’t have to be complicated.

KEEPING IT REAL

The two experts are taking a stand for startup investments, trumping the traditional portfolios with alternative investment suites. Of course, investors still want to see real growth, real value and real-world returns.

“Like investing in delivery bikes,” Tloubatla says. “It’s a real South African thing and it’s a real investment that can yield great returns.” According to SV Capital, investing in cattle works in a similar way.

They’ve dubbed it the ‘hosepipe effect’ and say that by investing your money this way, you invest wealth into a slow and steady stream that winds its way seamlessly, filling the bathtub in due course. The hosepipe is a flexible vehicle of movement in this case, which you can twist and turn as you like, ultimately managing the flow.

When it comes to investment, it helps to get real with your money and to choose investment products or portfolios that are easy to understand and manage, while also still being big on returns.

TIPS

FOR YOUNG INVESTORS

Know your money

You need to know how to spend money, make money and lose money. It takes practice and strategy, but make sure that your relationship with your investments never yield resentment.

It’s not all perfect

If you’re waiting for the perfect time to invest, you may never do it. The best time to start investing, is now.

Go for alternative investments

Alternative investments like cattle and delivery bikes mean that you’re working with real world assets. You also get access to local sectors you would normally not have had.

Play smart

Alternative investments aren’t a way for you to get rich quickly. Be sure to ask the right questions and ensure that your broker is regulated and has the right certification.

Clever investments

Look at the real world and then decide what you will be investing in. Agriculture was the economy’s Covid-19 survivor; the backbone of the South African economy. Delivery bikes have also seen a return of 19.22% over an 18-month period.

Diversify

Never keep your wealth in one bathtub. Diversified portfolios will put control back in your hands – when one is losing, the other one is gaining. . H
