F

inns have a reputation of being a real running nation. We have our ”Flying Finns” Paavo Nurmi and Lasse Virén, great running legends to remember. Finns are also well educated and we understand what kind of positive influence to our well-being running can bring. There are at least 600 000 runners in Finland. However, in the big picture our participant numbers at the running events are declining fast especially at marathons. This is due to a few demographic reasons: in Finland, a very big number of people were born after the war in 1950’s. That generation is now slowly retiring from running. Also, the age group of 35-50 years old, which is the most potential participant group, has declined almost 15 % from the golden years of marathons. Naturally there is a wide competition of the free time of people. Trail running and triathlon are increasing in popularity not to mention all other free time activities. Contrary to the negative trend in Finnish running we are really happy to present some positive numbers! Helsinki Street Run, which takes place for the 3rd time, is growing to a record number of participants this year! Also, Helsinki City Marathon attracts more and more foreign runners each year. This year we have 71 nationalities at the starting line! Last record is from the year 2012: then we had 64 nationalities! Amazing! We warmly welcome all international runners to run in Helsinki and Finland! This Helsinki City Marathon weekend is a great effort for the about 1000 volunteers working with it. Our next event is Sportyfeel Helsinki City Run Half Marathon (HCR) May 19th 2018. HCR became a member of AIMS this year and we hope to see our foreign runners there too! The profit from the running events organized by Finnish Athletics Federation is directed to youth athletics. Have a great marathon weekend! x

HELP US TO KEEP HELSINKI CLEAN \\ All running events organized by Finnish Athletics Federation are certified as EcoCompass Events. We want to develope more sustainable events and take the environment into consideration. Help us by recycling and putting your trash to trash cans.

SMALL SLOVENIA SHOWS BIG NUMBERS \\ Every third runner of the Helsinki City Marathon and Helsinki Street Run is from abroad. Most runners come from Great Britain and Germany, followed by neighbouring Sweden, Italy, Russia and Asian countries. There is a one small suprise among the big: Slovenia has over 70 runners thanks to an active tour operator Urban Runners. Good luck everyone!

Markku Haverinen Competition Director HELSINKI CITY RUN HALF MARATHON

The largest running event in Finland is Sportyfeel Helsinki City Run Half Marathon which was certified by AIMS (Association of International Marathons and Distance Races) this spring. Next year HCR takes place May 19th. We have already a record number of runners signed up this time of the year and next year. Join us for the half, too!

RUNNING EXPO AT THE TÖÖLÖ SPORT HALL

Competition office and the event Expo are located at Töölö Sport Hall on Friday August 11th 12-20 and Saturday 12th 9-13. There is much to see and experience at the Expo. And naturally many great offers from last minute purchases at the Intersport store! Remember to check the brand new Helsinki City Marathon shirts, too!

TIPS FOR THE RACE WEEKEND SHAKE OUT RUN AUGUST 12th \\ Shake Out Run wakes up your body for the next day's marathon or 17 km! Join us and meet the fellow runners for a short 20-30 minute run along the beautiful Töölö Bay. We start from the Paavo Nurmi statue right next to the Competition Office and Expo at Töölö Sports Hall.
