Your Chamber at Work…

Each year, the mission of this Chamber of Commerce is to serve as a voice for the business community, provide quality programs and services for its members, improve the economic environment of the community and create a legacy of leadership for the future. As I look back on 2018, I’m pleased to report that we’ve succeeded in each of these areas thanks to our amazing Chamber Staff plus the many volunteers who so generously have given of their time.

Monthly meetings and special events throughout the year provided many ways to engage and benefit our membership.

The Star Student-Teacher Breakfast held in February and the Tip Luncheon held in July provided an opportunity to recognize achievements and welcome new teachers, while working to pursue educational excellence. Programs like Leadership Henry and Youth Leadership Henry not only trained future leaders but reinforced the importance of giving back to our community.

We connected with our local and state government leaders through events like Henry Day at the Capitol. The time spent with our local delegation was important as a way to be sure our voice is heard. The interim – Intergovernmental Retreat held in April and the Intergovernmental Retreat held in August focused on the important concerns of

our community and allowed a forum to hear from all segments of the community. As an added bonus this year, participants were given the opportunity to visit various areas of interest in Henry County. Whether it was a trip to the Luxottica facility, Piedmont Henry Hospital or the Southern Crescent Technical College campus, we were reminded of the many great jobs and services provided here at home.

The monthly Business Booster Luncheons provided educational opportunities for small businesses to hear timely topics plus the always important occasion to network with fellow Chamber members. Business After Hours events were all well attended and a great

The Chamber has also worked closely with The Henry County Development Authority, The Henry County Convention and Visitors Bureau and The One Henry Economic Alliance. These entities all play a special role in helping Henry County continue to grow and prosper.

It’s not all work at the chamber. We also like to have fun. The Annual Golf Classic held in September is not only a fundraiser for the Chamber but also a chance to enjoy time together on the golf course. This year’s event was held at Georgia National Golf Club. Another fun outing was the Annual Membership Appreciation Day held on October 31st.

Seeing members of the Chamber dressed in various Halloween costumes is always a blast. The Annual Christmas Party will be occurring on December 6th at the Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites in Stockbridge. I hope to see you there!

As you can see, the Chamber is busy throughout the year. These events, plus the monthly Board and Committee meetings, go smoothly thanks to our very capable and dedicated Chamber Staff. I want to thank Aisha, Barbara, Laura, Phyllis, Gary and David for their tireless efforts. Our Chamber is well regarded throughout the state of Georgia largely because of your work.

I also want to thank the Board of Directors and Committees of the Chamber.

You are the drivers of this Chamber. Your passion for this community and willingness to serve shows in each and every meeting and event. Thank you for the support you have provided me this year.

It has been an honor and privilege to serve as your 2018 Chairman of The Henry County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.

We have already begun preparations for 2019 which will be led by our next Chairperson, Sharon Ponder. She will bring excellent leadership to the Chamber this coming year.

Customer Service for the Holidays t’s that time again. The most wonderful time of the year. With kids jingle belling (and cash registers too, hopefully) and everyone telling you to be of good cheer- just like the famous song. And within all of that – your customers are busy searching for the best deals, the greatest gadgets, and the hottest new trends. So, stock the shelves, rotate your inventory, spruce up your displays, and ready the staff for good services. I meant – great service experiences. You know, the kind of experiences that will have your customers posting positive online reviews, spreading their awesome experiences in your business by word of mouth, and generally becoming your effective, but unpaid sales force. Right? Maybe. If you’re lucky.

The truth is, customers are far more likely to spread bad experiences than good ones, if we talk about our experiences at all. We expect good service. A recent study by a national association of retailers found that a whopping 91% of our customers who experience bad customer service just never shop with us again. Ever. That’s harsh.

And it really hurts your bottom line. 13% of those dissatisfied customers tell more than 20 people about their negative experience.

Nowadays, bad reviews can go viral and permeate social media creating a toxic future for any budding entrepreneur who mishandles the occasional mishap.

The good news is, we can fix it. To err is human, to forgive is divine. Start with an old fashioned apology. Then, fix the problem, and clean up the mess. But don’t

hide your efforts; as vocal as the complaint was, that’s how vocal or visible the remedy should be, as well. Say, “I’m so sorry that happened to you (my valued customer), that’s not normal for us and we are embarrassed, further, this is what we will do to fix the problem… “ The beauty is – this process generally works. And if you encounter that occasional bad apple who keeps squawking publicly, the court of public opinion will generally rule in your favor. Now, this does not give you a license for negligence – but it does mean that we understand that things can go wrong. In general, look for ways to praise your customers and reward them for doing business with you. Teach them to appreciate you by appreciating them. Be thankful for their patronage and spread the good cheer. May all your customer experiences be jolly and bright. Happy Holidays.

CHAMBER BRIEFS Public Safety Day for the Youth Learn about the great things that are happening in our community…

Chamber Receives Donation from Central Georgia EMC The Henry County Chamber of Commerce has received a $24,170 donation from Central Georgia EMC. Warren Holder, board member for the local electric membership cooperative, presented the check to Chamber President & CEO David Gill at a recent meeting at the Henry County Chamber of Commerce.

According to Central Georgia EMC, these funds come from unclaimed capital credits that remain with the EMC after five years. Unclaimed capital credits were once remitted to the state of Georgia Department of Revenue, under Georgia’s Disposition of Unclaimed Property Act (DUPA).

Capital credits are margins over and above the cost of providing service for members of Central Georgia EMC for a specific year, after Central Georgia EMC’s financial obligations have been met.

Unclaimed capital credits remaining after five years can now stay in the communities served by Central Georgia EMC for the sole purposes of funding education, economic development and 501 (c) (3) charitable organizations in the EMC service area.

According to cooperative business principles, capital credits may be returned to each member on a pro-rata basis with a schedule determined by the respective EMC management and the board of directors. The amount of unclaimed capital credits changes annually, depending on the amount of capital credits refunded to members in a given year.

Stockbridge Youth Council Attends National Summit in Los Angeles Stockbridge, Georgia – Members of the Stockbridge Youth Council recently attended the National League of Cities’ City Summit in Los Angeles, California during the Week of November 5, 2018. Over 3,800 mayors, council members and other delegates from all 50 states and the District of Columbia convened in Los Angeles for the annual conference. The Stockbridge Youth Council, all Stockbridge residents, attended workshops that highlighted various topics including race, equity and leadership. Attendees also learned more about the U.S. political structure and community advocacy.

“Our youth truly had the experience of a lifetime,” said Councilwoman Neat Robinson, Council Liaison for the Stockbridge Youth Council. “The annual conference allowed the students to exchange ideas with some of the best and brightest young minds in the nation. Their lives will forever be impacted by this exceptional experience. We are all proud of this unique opportunity for the Stockbridge Youth Council. Just wait and see what they achieve in the very near future.”

Leadership Henry Class of 2019

By Don Dunlap Chair, YLH Board of Directors On Monday November 5, members of the Youth Leadership Henry Class of 2019 met at the Henry County Sheriff’s Offices, ready to learn about the role of Public Safety in the community. While this was a day off from school for most (Henry Schools had a staff professional development day), these aspiring leaders were ready to learn!

Sheriff’s Office Assembling in the auditorium at the Sheriff’s Offices, each class member received a badge with their “top 5” strengths from last month’s Clifton Strengths session, so they could practice what they had learned about interactions with each other throughout the day. We began with a session on Organization, using the Georgia BEST program materials from the Georgia Department of Labor (they had taken a survey earlier to self-assess the workplace ethics skills for which they wanted most assistance). The session focused on the top 10 habits of very organized people.

The class then went upstairs to the tactical simulator, where YLH Board Member Sergeant Robert Powell demonstrated the simulator using a specially-fitted Glock .40 pistol (feels like it’s shooting real rounds, but it isn’t) in target and tactical shoot-

ing scenarios. He challenged YLH Board Chair, Don Dunlap, to try his hand at a random scenario (a 911 hang-up call that turned out to be a hostage situation).

Fire Station #1 After debriefing from the simulator session, the class boarded buses provided by the 4-H and traveled to Fire Station #1. We learned about the structure of the Henry County Fire Department, an overview of what they do, and what it takes to serve in that capacity. The students were able to watch a new class of recruits practice their turnout gear timings and completed sessions with each of the crews examining various pieces of equipment. From Ladder trucks, engines, squads, and ambulances, they got a good idea of the unique role that each plays in ensuring the safety of our citizens, from the people that really do it.

Police Department Next the class went to the 911 Emergency Operations Center for a presentation by the Henry County Police Department describing the various duties of the HCPD and participated in an engaging discussion on Crime Scene investigation by CST Lavetta Oliver.

After a briefing by Jeremy Heard about the 4-part role the Emergency Management Agency plays, the class broke for lunch, which was followed by a description of the duties and responsibilities of the 911 operators. The class members were able to go on the floor of the 911 dispatch center and see the equipment being used as it was explained, in real time.

Jail Tour The last stop was the Henry County Sheriff’s Offices. Sheriff McBrayer met the class in the auditorium and gave a description of his role as an elected constitutional officer and history of the office and facilities in Henry County. He described the duties of the office, and how they have evolved over time.

After the Sheriff’s presentation, the students toured the jail and were able to see how the process works, ending back in the auditorium, completing the program day.

Leadership Henry participates in Community Day October’s Leadership Henry program focused on the non-profit organizations that serve the community and some of the people and places that make it special.

The morning session included representatives from local organizations who serve Henry County. They each shared with the class about the services their group provides and what their current needs are. Afterward, the class had an opportunity to visit the organizations’ exhibits set up around the room and network with them.

Following the morning session, the class visited A Friend’s House, a home for children in crisis located in McDonough. Nan Jenkins, Director of Development, shared about the important needs that A Friend’s House addresses and gave the class a tour of the facility. During lunch,

several class members led the group in their monthly Energy Bus leadership discussion.

Next, the class boarded the bus and headed to the Henry County Performing Arts Center for a presentation from the arts community, led by Lynna Schmidt. After hearing

about some of the great organizations working to further the arts in Henry County, the class took to the stage for a little improv!

The last stop for the afternoon was Southern Belle Farm where the class enjoyed some yummy strawberry ice cream. Then, the class en-

joyed a hayride around the farm led

by Jake Carter whose family has been farming in Henry County for generations. Jake shared their family’s farming heritage and transition to an agri-tourism business. The class was even treated to a pig race and an appearance by Southern Belle’s celebrity swimming pigs. It was a sweet finish to a great final day of class!

OCTOBER BUSINESS AFTER HOURS RECAP Hosted by Pyke & Associates

Someone said that they look forward to the Pyke & Associates, P.C. hosted Business After Hours each year because it’s always a lot of fun. They certainly made everyone feel welcome and set the mood with their annual Halloween themed BAH held on Thursday, October 25 at their Stockbridge location. Guests jumped right in upon arrival to guess the number of candy pieces in the jar for a prize and the mummy-wrapping game was hilarious. Affordable Events catered the food with a beautiful presentation, as usual. Charles Pyke, Jr.’s presentation, a mix of interesting facts about Pyke’s offerings and history was both informative and thought-provoking.

lunch catered by, Cowboy Chicken, one of McDonough’s hottest new restaurants. The food and fun was followed by our guest speaker and chamber member, Brittany L. Montrois, CPA. Brittany guided us through the recent tax law changes and how these changes will impact us in our personal and business tax filings for 2018.

Tax Law can be pretty boring, but it affects us all and Brittany really kept us focused and engaged!

The HCCC Education Foundation announces two $500 scholarship opportunities for Henry County students. The Scholarship for Young Women will be awarded at the 2019 Women’s EmPOWERment Summit on March 7, 2019 at the Merle Manders Conference Center.

Scholarship Criteria • Applicant must be a female Henry County High School Junior or Senior.

• Applicant must be in good academic standing with a cumulative GPA of 2.50 or higher. Transcript required.

• Applicant will write a 500-word essay (in 12-point Times New Roman) highlighting any awards, community services, work experience and explaining how receiving the scholarship will help the student attain her educational plans and career goals.

The application will be available online from December 14, 2018, to January 18, 2019.
