MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR Sharon Ponder

JUNE WOOD

Vice President of Finance at the Bennett International Group 2019 Chair of Henry County Chamber of Commerce

Our Chamber… Expanding the Possibilities Can you believe there is only one more month in this decade? This realization has given cause for deep reflection. What goals have you set that are still on your to do list? What business venture that you really wanted to give a try but instead you said, “Maybe next year?” Are you fulfilling the promise to your family to make more time for work/life balance? But more importantly as you reflect over this past decade what are you thankful for? November has traditionally been known as the month that we take time to reflect and give thanks. This Thanksgiving will definitely be different for me as it will be the first Thanksgiving without either of my parents. My father passed away last year on the Sunday after Thanksgiving. So, although this Thanksgiving will be different – I am still truly thankful for all of the wonderful memories that I have with my father. My father was a very quiet man that spent his life from a very young age assuming the responsibilities for taking care of his family. He loved the Fall and Winter time because it gave him an opportunity to chop wood and make large fires in our wood burning

fire place that would heat almost the entire home. Now, as we sit in this last quarter of the decade, I pose the question to you – What memories are you making with your family? It is easy especially as a working mother to find yourself trying to juggle all the balls that life throws you - but are you taking care of you? Are you taking time to create timeless moments? This year I look forward to starting a new Thanksgiving tradition with my family ensuring that my kids will have forever memories. Along with being thankful for my personal family I am also thankful for my Chamber family. I am in constant awe of the thoughtful actions of our Chamber members. Steve Nail, of Nail Heating and Air Conditioning, every year makes cash donations to our Teacher Induction Program (TIP) Luncheon, that is a huge hit with our teachers. And last month he organized a table collection that will be used in conjunction with Atlanta Food Banks to help needy families in the Hampton area. And there is rarely a charitable event in Henry County that doesn’t have Heritage Bank and the Heritage Foundation tied to it. I would truly be remiss if I didn’t mention that I am thankful to work for a company like Bennett International Group that starts off each board meeting by first giving thanks for the many blessing that have been bestowed upon the company. Also, Bennett and the Taylor Foundation are major givers to many nonprofits here in the area. So as we go into this last month of the decade - reflect on what goals you still want to get accomplished to end the year strong – but more importantly reflect on the events that you are thankful for and what new events are you going to add to your “ making memories” list…… Continue to Expand your Possibilities.

Steve Nail (r.) of Nail Heating and Air Conditioning, LLC, donates cash annually to support teachers new to Henry County.

The Heritage Bank Foundation donates thousands of dollars to support local organizations year round.

Bennett International Group leads the US in honoring our fallen heroes through Wreaths Across America program.

Managing Change Doug McElhaney, Business Consultant UGA Small Business Development Center at Clayton State University to accept change. However, having the attitude of “this is how we have always done it” will not work in today’s business environment. Continuous improvement and change are necessary for growth and success. Due to the World Wide Web, customer’s needs and demands change rapidly. Being flexible and willing to change with market demand is a competitive advantage. When assisting organizations with change, these simple steps are suggested:

There are many reasons change is not accepted. The top reasons are loss of control, uncertainty, more work, past resentments and the unknown. Change can consume our energy and lives. Today’s busy employee is trying to balance daily routines and simply does not have time

1. Sense of urgency 2. Communicate the reasons and ramifications of change while involving others 3. Lewin’s model (Unfreeze, Change then Refreeze) Be sure to set a refreeze date

4. Communicate weekly updates and celebrate milestones while building momentum There are other ideas and theories, but this process has worked well. Sense of urgency is a critical first step in change. It is important to explain what may happen if change is not accepted. Communication is critical to all parties. Participants want to know why change is necessary and how it will affect the individual. Lewin’s model is simple, but effective. Simple communication is critical in organizational change. Lastly, reaching and celebrating milestones will create lasting momentum. Momentum is a game changer in all organizations. Hopefully, these few simple steps will make the next change initiative easier and more effective. For more information on UGA SBDC at Clayton State University, call 678-466-5100.

The one constant item in life is change. As a college professor and consultant, one of the most difficult challenges in any organization is implementing change. Disrupting the status-quo seems to upset the balance of the universe. However, when organizations do not adapt to change; the results may be fatal. With technology, today’s speed of business is reaching historic heights. Products may be popular today, but gone tomorrow. Therefore, change must be implemented sooner rather than later. This article will look at a few simple ideas to make change easier.

JOINS GORDON STATE’S MARKETING TEAM Gordon State College recently named Katheryne Fields as director of marketing. Fields will be responsible for developing and managing a marketing plan that implements Gordon State College’s newly released five-year strategic plan. The director of marketing position is a new role for the institution as a result of the University System of Georgia’s Comprehensive Administrative Review for GSC. The study gathered

CLASS OF 2020 LEARNS HISTORY ON COUNTY DAY Before becoming a member of the Leadership Henry Class of 2020, I heard a lot of people repeat the same two statements. “You’re going to have a blast and learn so much.” And, “You will build so many lifelong friendships and connections.” After our retreat and only one class day, I am already seeing this to be so true. I’m learning so much about my classmates and how we will all be able to utilize our connections to help our community. Our first day of Leadership was County Day and I learned a lot about this community that I grew up in. We took a tour of the county while the county historian, Gene Morris, educated us on its history. The tour was very informational and we even saw some places that I had never seen in Henry County. The information we learned included things such as the geographical changes of the county, history of the farmlands, crops, residents, current points of interest and so much more.

After touring the county, we went to Jailhouse Brewing Company for a catered lunch while we learned about the history of the building and the brewing process. After that, we visited the Federal Aviation Administration. This was a very interesting stop because we got the chance to learn about air traffic control and even see inside the control room. When we left the FAA, we made one last stop at the Atlanta Motor Speedway, where we toured Club One and walked on the track and experienced the steepness of those turns. County Day was very eventful and

informational. We have an awesome class and I see us doing great things for our wonderful community. I look forward to seeing the great impact we will have on our community.

input from campus stakeholders and there was a demonstrated need for a marketing director as well as other specialists. Fields previously served as the Director for Institutional Advancement at Southern Crescent Technical College in Griffin, GA. During her tenure at SCTC, she was responsible for fundraising for the college by acquiring funds, grants, gifts and scholarships.

The Youth Leadership Henry Class of 2020 kicked off their year with beautiful weather as they worked on teambuilding skills and identified their personal strengths and weaknesses at the Fortson 4-H Center in Hampton. The students had the opportunity to complete the Clifton Strength Finders Assessment to learn more about how they operate as an individual. Creator of this assessment, Don Clifton, said “What would happen if we studied what was right with people versus what’s wrong with people?” Helping the students understand their assessment results, Carrie Barnes with Central Georgia EMC worked with them on identifying the strengths that are within them and how to nurture their strengths and align them with their passions and career goals. With the knowledge of these strengths, the students participated in several teambuilding projects learning how to communicate with others, being mindful of how their message was

being received versus how they were delivering it and having many bouts of laughter along the way. After lunch the class moved outside to cheer each other on for zip lining, rock wall climbing, low ropes, and more. Working together under pressure and supporting those who needed an extra boost was something you could clearly see while watching the student groups work through the course. We cannot wait to see the amazing friendships and bonds that will develop and bind this class together, as it does every year!

TOPIC: WHY HIRING VETERANS IS IMPORTANT FOR BUSINESSES Join us on November 21, 2019 at the November Business Booster Luncheon where we will be honoring our Veterans by recognizing those who have served our great country well. We will also be educating community leaders and employers on the importance of hiring Veterans. Attend to hear a panel of representatives from Toppan International and the Non-Profit Veteran Support Group (VSG) that will speak for our Veteran Community and discuss programs that offer support to Veterans and their families. Learn about the positive impact that hiring Veterans has on company productivity and overall success.

Moderator: Charlie Pugh Local Veterans Employment Representative Georgia Department of Labor

MEET OUR PANELISTS! Kevin Smith was born and raised in NYC. He graduated from St. John’s University; completing his Army ROTC and began a career in the military in 1979 and retired as a Major in 1996. Kevin worked for several companies before joining Toppan Interamerica in 2002 as their Human Resources Manager. When Kevin isn’t working he is spending time with his wife or his two grown sons. He has been active in the Chamber and the local Society of Human Resources Management Chapter.

SEPTEMBER BUSINESS BOOSTER LUNCHEON RECAP By Dodie Cason, Assistant Vice President, Business Banker, Heritage Bank, and HCCC Small Business Council, Chair

What a great time we all had networking at our September Business Booster Luncheon. Alisa Kirk, Area Director for The UGA Small Business Development Center at Clayton State University, shared useful networking tips and engaged us in fun networking activities. This allowed us to gain more insight to the fundamentals of networking and enabled us to build stronger relationships with other Chamber members and attendees. We dug deeper into the differences between introverts and extroverts and found that regardless of our personality types we can all be great at networking. We learned the importance of having a plan when we attend a networking event and that we should be looking for referral partners that fit our business needs. A huge thank you to our event sponsor, Southeastern Primary Care, and to our caterer, The Original Shane’s Rib Shack.

Southeastern Primary Care sponsored the September BBL and introduced attendees to their firm’s services. UGA Small Business Development Center Area Director Alisa Kirk lead the attendees in practical exercises for effective networking.

THANKS TO OUR SEPTEMBER BBL DOOR PRIZE DONORS

The secrets to success through networking were put into play by the entire room.

2019 HCCC Golf Classic Sponsors GOLD SPONSORS

Bob Van Dunk served 8 years in the US Marines before joining the US Army. He served two and a half tours in Vietnam with MAT3-75 and retired after 20 years of military service. Bob worked as a civil servant weapons manager for an additional 21 years. After retiring as a civil servant, Bob volunteered at the Stockbridge Veterans Administration (VA) Outpatient Clinic as a Service Representative, while filing his claim with the VA for service-related injuries, Bob came face to face with the stark realities many veterans face when seeking help and assistance. This realization led him to establish the Veterans Support Group in 2011 which aids all Veterans, widows and their families. James Michael Dunn served the Marine Corps from 1969 to 1973. He served overseas with the 7th Communication Bn. and 3rd Marines Amphibious Force. After his military service, Jim worked in the automotive industry in finance and sales retiring after nearly 30 years. Rather than spend his days playing golf or fishing, Jim returned to work for Henry County as a school bus driver for 4 years. Prior to joining the Veterans Support Group, Jim volunteered at the Stockbridge VA Outpatient Clinic assisting veterans at the check-in desk. While providing aid at the VA, Jim realized the many challenges Veterans have. His desire to do more led him to The Veterans Support Group where he continues to serve the Veterans in the state of Georgia.

It was another successful Chamber Golf Classic and we would like to thank all the Sponsors, Players, those that donated raffle prizes, and especially our Chamber volunteers. Without everyone's hard work and participation we would not be able to put on events like this.
