MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR Sharon Ponder

JUNE WOOD

Vice President of Finance at the Bennett International Group 2019 Chair of Henry County Chamber of Commerce

Our Chamber… Expanding the Possibilities Anytime you are given the task of leading an organization, most successful leaders begin by evaluating the current programs before adding, deleting or changing any of the established policies, procedures or events. Coming into the role of Chamber chair made it easy because the Henry County Chamber had so many great programs already in place. One of the events sponsored by the Chamber that I got involved with very early on was the Teacher’s Induction Program Luncheon. This event, also known as TIP, is organized by the Chamber’s Education Committee. This luncheon is always held during July’s week of training for all the new teachers to the Henry County School System. Funds are raised to purchase bags for all the teachers new to Henry County – those bags are also filled with school supplies donated by Chamber businesses. For 2019, the Henry County Chamber of Commerce is scheduled to prepare for 475 new teachers. This event could not be possible without all the generous support from our sponsors and volunteers that put the bags together. The Chamber recognizes that it is critical for the

business and education community to work together in order to have a thriving community. It was due to the collaborative effort of the business, education and political community that the concept of the Academy for Advanced Studies was born. During an intergovernmental Retreat, the idea was birthed to create an easier pathway for Henry County students to obtain Henry County jobs. Fast forward 10 years and now the Academy is poised to take over the former Henry County High School campus. With the move of the Henry County High School students to the McDonough

High School campus it will allow the Academy’s staff to add additional programs and expand their already robust class offerings. Along with our public schools and our many private schools here in Henry County, we are blessed to have several local secondary level school choices for our Henry County Residents. Mercer University, Clayton State University, Gordon State College and Southern Crescent Technical College have been excellent partners with the Chamber. Local businesses have been able to develop programs for high-demand positions to better equip Henry County residents for

Henry County Jobs. Although we have many programs like TIP that are stellar programs, it is always good to analyze all aspects of your programs to ensure you are achieving the wanted result. My goal since I stepped into this role is to ensure that our business partners in the chamber have a sense of “added value” as a result of being a member of the chamber. In order to create value, I’ve opted to implement a survey to ask the membership what they want/need. By the time this article goes to print we should have received the results from the distributed survey and be in the process of analyzing the data. It will be exciting to use the information to determine what additional offerings will be extended to our membership – but more importantly is that it will be content that YOU want. So by getting insight on potential new programs and continuing ones such as TIP that make such a huge impact in our community - we will continue to put the chamber in a position of … Expanding the Possibilities.

BUSINESS PROFILE

Xtreme Fun on Wheels 570 Harris Drive, McDonough, GA 30252

B

ased in Henry County and booming, one of the leading businesses in the video game truck industry serving metropolitan Atlanta is Xtreme Fun on Wheels. The business is part of the multi-billiondollar mobile gaming industry that’s growing at a pace to hit $220 billion by 2022. Founded in 2014 by Reginald Ponder, Xtreme Fun On Wheels is the busiest on weekends with wall-to-wall children’s birthday parties. During the week, it’s mostly school events. Reginald and his wife of 22 years, Sharon, share the workload —he manages the scheduling and oversees the daily operation of the units and personnel. Sharon, who is the Vice President of Finance with Bennett International Global, handles the accounting and back-end of the business primarily on nights and weekends.

Reginald says that the business has grown with very little advertising, largely by word-of-mouth from people who have seen or experienced one of Ponder’s game truck parties and

followed-up to host an event themselves. Reginald remembers the first time he saw a video game truck. He was astonished at the children’s amazement and level of interaction. At the time, Reginald owned a trucking firm and was growing tired of being away from home and looking for a way to transition into another entrepreneurial enterprise. “I did a lot of research, decided that franchising was not going to be useful, and finally settled on a provider that is

turnkey. We customize the graphics, focus on quality customer service and maintain our inventory in top condition. Our customer experience differentiates us.” The business expanded three years ago when the Ponders bought a tailgating trailer on line. This unit is most busy during football season at Falcons and college games. That may soon change as the Ponders are season ticket holders of the MLS championship winning Atlanta United and expect

Scheduled to come on line in July, a limosene-style party bus, transportation for weddings and party groups, will further expand and diversify the Xtreme Fun on Wheels portfolio. Both Reginald and Sharon are amazed at the success of the business and are a little cautious at the pace of growth. When asked about their plans for the future of the business, they both replied quickly, “Be careful what you ask for.”

Thus, creating millions of dollars of wasted time, resources and effort. For project managers to be successful, they must focus on organization, communication and setting expectations. Some of the most prominent mistakes in project management are:

What is a Project Manager? by Douglas McElhaney, Business Consultant, SBDC

As a college professor, I like to keep my eyes on job opportunities within the business sector. Who are companies hiring and why? The words project and manager are seen daily in “Want Ads”. So, what exactly is a project manager and what kind of value do they add to the organization? First, let’s define project management (PM). PM is the practice of initiating, planning, executing, controlling, and closing the work of a team to achieve a specific goal and meet specific success criteria at the specified time. Simply put, effective project managers add value by completing projects on time and within budget. The project manager opportunities are projected to grow at approximately 30 percent per year. Every industry is looking for effective people who can get the right things done on time. What makes a project manager successful? According to many PM experts, more than 40 percent of projects fail.

• Poorly defined objectives and goals • Scope creep • Inadequate training • Lack of risk mitigation • Internal strife Therefore, an effective project manager must document a clear and concise objective and have all team members sign off on their goals. This level of focus will keep scope creep out of the equation. Scope creep occurs when team members start losing focus of their task. The next area of error is training. Being a great leader, begins with properly training and equipping the project team with all needed resources. All projects have risk. Proactive risk mitigation meetings are a must. The project manager must meet with their team members and leverage past lessons of success and failure. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Lastly, internal strife happens. A successful project manager communicates to all team members that egos need to be left at the door and their job is to add value by supporting the team’s project. In closing, an effective project manager will be in high demand for the next several years. If project success has been eluding your organization, now may be the time to invest in a project manager. All industries can benefit from those who make things happen in a timely, efficient manner. The speed of business is growing faster along with tougher expectations from customers. Are you ready?

MAY BUSINESS BOOSTER LUNCHEON RECAP By Dodie Cason, Chair, Small Business Council and AVP, Heritage Bank

O

xycodone, hydrocodone and morphine are just a few of the prescription painkillers being abused today. In fact, every nine minutes a person dies from prescription drug abuse. Far too often this prescription drug dependency turns into an even larger problem; an addiction to heroin or even fentanyl. These street drug versions are cheaper and often easier to obtain. This epidemic does not discriminate, but we find that men are more likely to die from an overdose than women. Don’t be fooled by this statistic because the sad truth is our kids are not immune from the epidemic either. The scarier truth is that the number of Opioid related deaths each year comes in at a staggering number of 49,000. This is the equivalent to filling up SunTrust Park! What can we do you ask? Stay involved with your kids; don’t get sucked into the “Not My Kid” syndrome. Secure your prescription medications. Don’t leave them out for anyone to steal. Discard any unused medications. And most importantly, ask for help if you feel a problem starting. This is just a small tidbit of information poured into us at the May Business Booster Luncheon. Emmett Highland, Diversion Outreach Coordinator for the DEA passionately shared his experiences and knowledge gained through his years of service in drug law enforcement.
