When preparing for the year, I could not help but stop and reflect on how blessed the Henry County Chamber of Commerce is to have such a dedicated Board of Directors and staff. These business and community leaders care enough about the future of this community and are willing to give their valuable time to serve this
organization. I look forward to serving alongside you this year and thank you for your willingness to serve. In 2020, we want our chamber members to know that they belong to an organization that wants to collaborate with them. We are energized by shared drive and passion. He’s the self-acclaimed, “original plumb crazy plumber” guy with the great big smile. His genuinely sunny personality makes him an instant buddy to all he meets. A closer look at Rick’s history reveals that he is a fifthgeneration plumber. His great grandfather Ben Ingram was the original plumber in the family. In the Grant Park area in 1905, Ben rode the trolley with his toolbox in hand to plumbing jobs taking along one of his four sons to help homeowners and businesses in Atlanta. The legacy continued with past and present Ingram relatives owning, managing and working for union or non-union companies and for city or county governments. The Ingram family was instrumental in initiating and creating the state plumbing code and licensing requirements for plumbers setting quality standards in the Georgia plumbing industry still in place today. Better Plumbing Services is based in Conyers, GA, where the company services all of metro Atlanta with a concentration in Henry, Newton, and Rockdale counties. The firm services residential and commercial clients of all sizes including around the clock emergency calls. Rick operates the company with two full-time dispatchers and a fleet of vehicles that are assigned to his technicians who are dispatched from their homes to jobs throughout metro Atlanta. Rick carefully manages the size and scope of the business to ensure his customers are getting personal attention and considers them part of his circle of family and friends. Rick and his wife Deede live in Ola, GA, on a 33-acre tract of land near the Newton and Henry County line. They love to travel. At home, Rick likes spending time at their pool and tending to the many variation of flowers he grows, and landscaping. The homestead is a refuge for a wide variety of wildlife and pets that Rick has rescued over the years. He names a long list of thoroughbred dogs that were raised over the course of his dog breeding years.

FIVE LEVELS OF LEADERSHIP IN THE WORKPLACE Some of the hardest decisions that must be made in the workplace require one of the “softest” skills that an entrepreneur must develop: leadership. True leadership is a journey of influence- nothing more, nothing less. In our social media-driven world where people clamor for “followers” and viral (yet fleeting) fame, it’s easy to confuse popularity with leadership. It’s also easy to miss organic opportunities to make a significant impact on employees, customers, and our communities at-large. If you can increase your influence with others in the workplace, then you can lead your teams more effectively and facilitate desired outcomes. Everything rises and falls on leadership, so make it a point to hone your skills daily. There are five levels in the leadership journey that you must successfully traverse in order to maximize your potential and guide your organization to success: Level 1: Position. People follow you because they have to. You’re the owner/ boss, but this is the lowest level of leadership and the weakest form of influence. Aim higher in order to be a true change agent. Level 2: Permission. People follow you because they want to. This level is based on getting to know your people, building relationships, and establishing trust. Influence is readily received in a trusting environment. Level 3: Production. People follow you because you get results. Your company is profitable; morale is high; and everyone wants to be part of a winning team. As long as you perform, you can sustain your influence. Level 4: People Development. People follow you because you invested in them. When you empower people to grow and be leaders in their own right, you reproduce your strengths and build high performing teams. When you invest in others, you also change their lives and sew seeds for lifelong relationships. Level 5: Pinnacle. People follow you because of who you are and what you represent. Your personal brand is backed by a legacy of talent mastery, mentorship, and replicating level 4 leaders who will keep the cycle going. This can be a difficult level to achieve, but it has the highest payoff with influence that transcends positions, organizations, and even industries. MEMBER NEWS CHAMBER ADOPTS 2020 LEGISLATIVE AGENDA The advocacy role of the Henry County Chamber of Commerce centers around three key components: educating its members, building relationships, and creating capital for the regional business community. To accomplish a successful program, the Henry Chamber develops a Public Policy Agenda that focuses on its goals. We act as the voice for business and we are committed to ensuring a favorable economic, legal, and regulatory climate for the business community. Our mission is to publicly support policies that protect our member business needs and facilitate economic growth in our region. Air Quality The Henry County Chamber, in coordination with the Regional Business Coalition, stands in support of cleaner air and healthier communities. Education Attainment & Workforce Development Education is integral to the community and fosters a desirable quality of life that attracts and supports a thriving business environment. Adequate funding for our schools is imperative. Because
the business community is a stakeholder in the quality of public education, we encourage business involvement in all aspects of public education. Economic Development New economic development drivers are needed to keep Georgia competitive in the global marketplace.
SIX JOIN THE HCCC BOARD OF DIRECTORS IN CLASS OF 2020-2023 The 2020 Henry County Chamber of Commerce welcomes six new class of 2020-2023 Board of Directors. The new HCCC Directors were nominated by the Chamber membership in September, 2019, and approved by the Board in October, 2019. In order to serve on the Board, an individual must be a current member of HCCC in good standing. Additionally, the nominee should be willing to become involved in the organization, attend all relevant meetings, provide leadership and resources, and support the mission of the Chamber.

EXPOSES OPPORTUNITIES AT HOME By Geni Reed
“Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” -Maimonides Education is perhaps one of the most important ingredients to a happy, successful, and constructive life. As a student and servant in leadership, I say this experience is extremely humbling and I am very fortunate to have been a part of this tour with my Leadership Henry classmates for Education Day in November 2019. Our first stop was at one of the largest and renowned private faith-based schools in Henry County, Strong Rock Christian School. We were greeted with smiling faces and a lovely breakfast prepared by the school staff. We enjoyed a testimonial video which included some of our very own Leadership Henry Classmates and a LIVE performance from the school choir and drama students. Strong Rock offers programs for children from the ages of six weeks until 12th grade. The Academy of Advanced Studies (AAS), our next stop, is in the heart of McDonough next to the Henry County
Performing Arts Center. AAS is a college and career academy program of choice for high school students enrolled in Henry County Schools. Students who attend here can take career pathways such as Agriculture, Education, Finance, Automotive, Technology, and more. To top the tour, we were delighted to be served a 3-course meal prepared and plated by the students in the Culinary Arts Program! Only one word. “Excellente”! PIEDMONT HENRY – A DAY OF INTERACTIVE LEARNING By Lyndsay Theado
The Youth Leadership Henry Class of 2020 was treated to many one-on-one talks and behind the scene peeks during their Hospital Tour Day in December at Piedmont Henry Hospital in Stockbridge. The students learned that our community hospital opened in 1979 with just over 100 beds for patients. Today the hospital has 236 beds and somehow still cares for over a million patients who walk through their doors annually! In 2018 alone over 96,000 people went through their Emergency Department – WOW! The men and women of Piedmont Henry work hard for their community 365 days of the year! During our touring the students were able to speak with many passionate Doctors, nurses, and technicians hearing directly from those in the healthcare field about the in’s and out’s of what they do, why they do it, and the education needed in the various fields. From visiting the imaging department and seeing all of the state-of-the-art equipment to the labs where processing and testing takes place, the students asked lots of questions and gained a new understanding of one of
the largest employers in Henry County. Piedmont Henry Hospital presented the class with their Stroke Awareness Program, teaching everyone the signs, symptoms, and what to do if you encounter someone who is having a stroke. The students, in turn, have the opportunity to teach these tips and lifesaving steps to anyone they encounter for an achievement award from the hospital program. It is important to act F.A.S.T. when you encounter someone who may be having a stroke: Check their F.ace for any signs of drooping; Check their A.rms to see if their strength is off with one arm or the other; Is their S.peech slurred or strange?; T.ime is of the essence – call 9-1-1 immediately! Class members also had the opportunity to visit and learn about the Hands of Hope Clinic located on the Piedmont Henry Hospital campus. The clinic helps provide healthcare to those who are uninsured or underinsured within Henry County. The students learned about the many services offered there and how they, too, can volunteer within the clinic to give back to our community.

We acknowledged the positive impact these men and women have made on our country and recognized the substantial contributions they make as employees. Our panel of speakers included Bob Van Dunk and James Dunn from the Veterans Support Group and Kevin Smith from Toppan Interamerica. Charlie Pugh from the Georgia Department of Labor moderated these experts on topics such as veterans as role-model employees, statistics supporting positive employer benefits for hiring veterans and veteran support programs. Elizabeth Davis, celebrating the success of Henry County Schools with the increase of 9.9 points for their CCRPI scores for 2019. What a tremendous and honorary time for our teachers and students of Henry County! Our final stop was at Southern Crescent Technical College (SCTC). SCTC is a technical college that offers education classes from technical certificate programs to degree programs for high school students, recent graduates, new and/or returning students seeking new skills and training to help achieve their career goals. As a growing technical college in Henry County, the facility offered an array of programs in a new state of the art learning environment. From allied health programs, technical & industrial, public safety, to film and television programs, there is no challenge finding a suitable and rewarding program to prepare for the county’s appetite as the fastest growing county in Georgia. In conclusion, I felt that the experience of touring various educational institutions opened my eyes to myriad opportunities for my family and others I mentor. The piece of mind and convenience of taking your education to the next level in your own backyard is invaluable. I am excited about what’s to come for the future of our residents in Henry County and I am blessed and honored to be a part of it! This update was provided by Geni Reed, Branch Manager at Ameris Bank in McDonough, GA, and one of the Class of 2020 participants in Leadership Henry. An eight year resident of Henry County, Geni is honored to have the ability to serve and work in her community and is committed to grow in her future leadership roles.
