It is something that is difficult to describe to people who do not live here and who have never attended or participated in any of the weeklong events. I’ve tried to explain it to others not from this area and they just smile and nod their heads, not really understanding. I have likened it to “Brigadoon,” that sleepy, little town, which comes alive every 100 years. That’s not quite it either. When I read in the Echo Pilot an account of Old Home Week 1905, it became quite clear, in one word, what Old Home Week is and what makes it so special. The author mentioned the word “spirit.” There is an Old Home Week Spirit. It is akin to the Christmas Spirit that everyone feels at that time of the year. It is anticipation. It is anxiousness waiting for the day to come. It is being remarkably busy preparing for family and friends. Everyone has a smile on their face and is cordial. It is looking forward to seeing old friends from childhood — that time in everyone’s life when the strongest friendships and bonds are made. It makes one feel good inside. The Old Home Week Spirit takes pride in Greencastle’s and Antrim’s history and ancestors, always remembering those who came before us. The Old Home Week Spirit honors our past. If we do not remember our past, then our today, and our future will have no meaning or purpose. I hope your visit and participation during Old Home Week 2022 helps you make a connection with your community’s past. Catch the Old Home Week Spirit and carry it forward for future generations. It is a distinct honor to serve as president of the 41st triennial Old Home Week celebration. Bonnie Shockey

Old Home Week: An Overview By Shawn Hardy
Greencastle-Antrim’s 41st Triennial Old Home Week celebration is being held Saturday, Aug. 6, to Saturday, Aug. 13. Nearly 50 committees of the Old Home Week Association, under the leadership of President Bonnie Shockey, worked for nearly a year to fill the week with activities for all ages. Storefronts, curbs and crosswalks have seen fresh coats of paint and gardeners spruced up their flower beds to make sure everything looks its best. Old Home Week was founded as a reunion and it continues to bring back former local residents from across the country and even abroad. However, many of those “coming home” live in the Greencastle area all year long. Old Home Week started as the Old Boys’ Reunion in August 1902, initiated by concert singer Philip Baer, who had been warmly welcomed by former Greencastle residents as he traveled the country during his career. Sixty-five “old boys” enjoyed a chicken dinner, picnic along the Conococheague Creek, a minstrel show and band concerts, according to “A Safe Kept Memory: The Old Home Week Story” prepared for the 29th Triennial in 1986. The first Old Boys’ Reunion was also the last as their wives noticed the “enthusiasm for the fellowship and entertainment” their husbands enjoyed and wanted to be included, too. In 1905, Old Home Week was born and the tradition has continued every three years since then, enjoyed by men and women and girls and boys
alike. Some of the events of those early days are still held today, including a parade, concerts and fireworks. Badges and programs were sold for the first time in 1923. A badge was all that was needed for admission to Old Home Week events then and is all that is needed for admission to Old Home Week events today. The price in 1923 was 10 cents and today it is $6. A different local landmark is depicted on the badge every three years. The badge for the 41st celebration features a sketch of Allison’s Tavern as it may have appeared when John Allison laid out the town of Greencastle 240 years ago in 1782. The official Old Home Week opening ceremony will be held from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 6, on Center Square. Children younger than 16 are invited to help President Bonnie Shockey cut the ribbon. The unofficial opening beginning at 11 p.m. Sunday on Center Square is when a lot of people feel like Old Home Week officially begins. When the town clock strikes midnight, Vernon McCauley will say “Happy Old Home Week, everybody!” before the crowd breaks into the song “The Old Grey Mare.” When it comes to crowds, the official Old Home Week picture taken at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday on Center Square features about 2,000 faces. The crew from Central Photo Company from Washington, D.C., has been taking the gigantic photos for so long

they are practically part of the community. They say a picture is worth a thousand words and the photos taken on Center Square truly tell a story about Old Home Week. Photos from celebrations past are displayed in OHW Headquarters in the old Conn Building on the northwest corner of the square. The Old Home Week parade is another huge draw, stepping off at 6 p.m. Thursday. The route goes down Washington Street to Franklin Street to Carlisle Street to Walter Avenue to Allison Street. Old Home Week seems like it just “happens” every year, but there is a lot of behind-thescenes work by committees as members ensure everyone has a good time, whether their interests are in history, music, sports or just learning about the town. At all hours of the day and night, people will be seen strolling downtown and peering into decorated windows that give

Six years later, William Allison conveyed 300 acres to his son, John. John Allison’s plans to establish a new town in the wilderness of what was then the southern part of Cumberland County were delayed by troubles with England and eventually the Revolutionary War, in which he served. “It was not until after the victory at Yorktown, in October of 1781, that the place he would call Greencastle was founded,” the late William P. Conrad, local historian, wrote in a description of a Mark Twain Noe painting of the tavern. “Early in the spring of 1782, Allison, with his assistant James Crawford, began surveying and plotting the streets and building lots for his project,” Conrad wrote. “In this vast woodland stretching the length of the Cumberland Valley there would be a town just five miles from Maryland‘s border lying equidistant between the mountain ranges that rimmed this historic part of Pennsylvania.” “The tavern continued to serve its customers in this woodland setting while the town grew around it,” Shockey said. “The hostelry’s site was the first lot to be surveyed and it remained as one of Allison’s holdings until his death in 1795.” The tavern was located a tract bordering what is now West Baltimore Street on the southwest corner of Center Square. A bronze plaque was placed on the red brick building that now stands there by Harry D. Zeigler VFW Post 6319 and Frank L. Carbaugh American Legion Post 373 during Greencastle’s bicentennial celebration in 1982. It reads: Colonel John Allison 1738 – 1795 This tablet honors the memory of Col. John Allison who, in 1782, founded Greencastle. Allison’s Tavern, which stood on this site 200 years ago, was the beginning point of the survey which resulted in the streets and building lots that formed the town during its early years.

Ted Alexander’ By Mike Lewis
The late Ted Alexander, a renowned local historian, will be remembered during Old Home Week. “Ted was well respected by many, many people, from his childhood to his career with the National Park Service and especially at Allison-Antrim Museum,” Bonnie Shockey, president and CEO of the museum, wrote in an email message. Shockey and other historians and friends of Alexander will take part in a panel discussion, “Remembering Ted Alexander,” at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 12, in the barn at the museum grounds on South Ridge Avenue. It will be an informal gathering, with people sharing memories of the late historian.

The panel also will include John Miller, executive director of the Shippensburg Historical Society; Janet Pollard, executive director of the Franklin County Visitors Bureau; Stephen Recker, a long-time friend of the late historian; and Dave Sciamanna, retired president of the Greater Chambersburg Chamber of Commerce. “I think I’m actually the person who knew him the longest,” said Shockey, who also is president of this year’s Old Home Week celebration. She and Alexander attended school together. “He would help me in the history classes,” she said. “His love of history carried from his childhood until his passing.” Alexander, who died in 2020, turned that early knowledge of history into an academic pursuit. He held a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Maryland College Park and a master’s degree in history from the University of Maryland Baltimore County. Later, he turned it into a career. He served for more than a quarter-century as chief historian at the Antietam National Battlefield near Sharpsburg, Md., and became a nationally renowned historian. “He is a legend. There’s not a lot of people I would say that about, but he was a legend at Sharpsburg,” John Howard, retired superintendent at the Antietam National Battlefield, said after Alexander’s death. Alexander also wrote books, including “The Battle of Antietam: The Bloodiest Day” and “Southern Revenge!: Civil War History of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania.” He also wrote, edited and contributed to other books and more than 200 articles and book reviews. A descendant of two members of the 126th PA Regiment, he wrote “The 126th Pennsylvania” about Franklin County’s Civil War veterans. And he co-authored “When War Passed this Way,” with his uncle, William P. Conrad. For many years, Alexander wrote a column for the Echo Pilot, and many of those pieces were related to the Civil War.
Alexander founded and coordinated the Chambersburg Civil War Seminars and Tours. He also raised thousands of dollars to preserve battlefields. “No other individual has raised as much money to preserve Civil War battlefields as Ted Alexander. Nobody. ... He told me that was his greatest contribution to history,” Dennis Frye, retired chief historian at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, said after Alexander’s death. Shockey said Alexander, his mother Jane, and his aunt, Nan Flaherty, served on an early committee that led to the formation of the AllisonAntrum Museum. He also founded the museum’s monthly speaker series. “With his background, Ted was able to get nationally renowned historians and authors to come to the museum in Greencastle to talk about wide-ranging Civil War topics as well as authors and news people like William ‘Bill’ Nack, who wrote the story of (the race horse) Secretariat,” Shockey wrote. “Visitors came from surrounding towns and counties as far away as Fulton County and Adams County and Washington County, Md.,” she continued. “For 20 years, the greater Greencastle-Antrim area was blessed by Ted’s knowledge and love of history. He was adamant that the speakers had to be wide-ranging — far beyond the topic of the Civil War.” He also had a keen connection to Old Home Week, leading a special presentation each year. One year, Alexander led the Reminiscing panel discussion with other Vietnam veterans. Alexander, a Marine, served two tours in Vietnam and was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal with Combat V, according to an online biography. Alexander had a “larger-thanlife personality,” Shockey said. But he remained humble and “very interested” in others’ research.

‘Teach Love Inspire’ with the Loyal Daughters By Tamela Baker
For about 100 years, the Greencastle Loyal Daughters have existed to “advance the welfare of Greencastle and to mold the past with the present.” The group meets once every three years during Old Home Week to renew acquaintances, welcome new members and enjoy a special themed program. That tradition continues this year with “Teach Love Inspire” — a program to celebrate teachers. The meeting begins with registration and displays at 1 p.m., followed by the program at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9, in Antrim Brethren in Christ Church, 24 Kauffman
Road East. This is a new location as the group has outgrown its previous meeting site. More than 400 attended the gathering in 2019. Dr. Lura Hanks, Greencastle-Antrim School District superintendent, will be on hand this year to “tell her story,” according to Loyal Daughters President Dotti Zimmerman, including “how she got into education, why she got into education, what inspired her to become a teacher” and eventually superintendent. A panel of past and current district teachers will then participate in a discussion moderated by Zimmerman.

Displays will include old desks, yearbooks and other memorabilia from Greencastle schools. “We’ve had some people that have literally gone through basements of the schools over there and found things that people didn’t even know existed,” she said. The triennial $5 membership fee is charged at the door. The money collected will “go to projects, needs throughout the community,” Zimmerman said. The 2019 program was “A Salute to Nurses.” Monarch’s Way, Tayamentasachta Center for Environmental Studies and the Greencastle Shade Tree Commission received $500 each from dues collected. Membership is open to any past or current female resident of Greencastle-Antrim, Zimmerman said. The Loyal Daughters first met in 1920, but became an official organization in 1923. Zimmerman noted that Old Home Week was instituted as “The Old Boys Reunion,” but the situation quickly changed. “It was originally all men that started this and took part in all this,” she said. “And so I guess the daughters and the wives and the women said, ‘Wait a minute!’” And that’s why, she said, Loyal Daughters “became official in ‘23 … ‘with every daughter or gal of Greencastle eligible for membership, especially the wives of the Old Boys.’” Beginning with their first donation of $674 in 1926 to illuminate the dials of the town clock, the Loyal Daughters have contributed to a number of local projects and nonprofits.

Fuss was there for about three years before taking a job with Fox 45 in Baltimore. Fuss recalled how it further elevated his TV news experience with extensive police and crime stories. He also began what he called “natural sound pieces,” which were relaxed stories for the channel. In other words, Fuss relied on the natural background sound.

“I did a story on a guitar maker and an ice cream stand, all kinds of things,” he said. Then his career took him to WJLA, an ABC affiliate in Washington, D.C. Fuss was there about five years, working on special investigative pieces and covering sports like the city’s professional football team now known as the Washington Commanders. In January 1999, Fuss headed to work at a CBS news bureau in Washington, where he has been for the last 23 years. He recalled how the job exposed him to “really interesting things I never had a chance to do before.” He covers stories on Capitol Hill, the Pentagon and rotates with other news crews covering the White House. That means he travels with the president, and can count five of the leaders he’s spent time with: Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, Donald Trump and now Joe Biden. He recalled hair-raising moments on the job, like the Oklahoma City bombing in April 1995. The attack killed 168 people, making it the worst home-grown terrorist attack in the nation’s history.

Fuss recalled he and his colleagues flying to the scene with nothing more than the “clothes on our backs.” When the 9/11 terrorist attacks occurred, Fuss said he was inside on Capitol Hill. Everyone was told to evacuate the area because it was feared one of the planes used in the attacks was heading that way. The plane ended up crashing in Shanksville, Pa., instead. “Just crazy stuff like that,” Fuss said. Looking back, the 59-year-old Fuss, who lives in Howard County, Md., cherishes his memories of Greencastle and said he’s never missed a Greencastle-Antrim Old Home Week. And he counts himself lucky in the life he’s had. “I’m just very blessed to have this job.”

Faith-based readings and performances by artists and dancers will be featured between songs, according to Mandy Stottlemyer, who chairs the community worship committee. At previous Old Home Week celebrations, the first service drew about 900 people, Stottlemyer said. “You will be tremendously blessed,” she said. “I’ve had people who came to the first performance and left and called friends and relatives ... and then their friends and relatives showed up at the second one and were just totally blown away. I would just welcome anyone to come.” This year’s theme is “Jesus, He Is Worthy.” The services are a major part of the Old Home Week celebration in a community that is steeped in Christian faith and has about 40 churches, according to Stottlemyer. “Greencastle is an amazing community that wants to have this,” Stottlemyer said. “It’s just incredible that we live in a community like that.” Old Home Week President Bonnie Shockey will start the service with welcoming remarks, followed by local pastors conducting Scripture reading and prayer. The audience is welcome to sing along with the opening hymn, Stottlemyer said. The choir and orchestra will perform about a dozen sacred songs in various styles with readings in between. Artists and dancers will also perform, according to Stottlemyer. One of the readings is titled “The Vastness of God.” The other two will be related to the lyrics of the surrounding songs,

Stottlemyer said. Those at the gathering will be invited to sing along with, “The Lord Bless You and Keep You” by Peter C. Lutkin to close the service, she said. Dave Besecker, pastor of music, worship and pastoral care at Otterbein Church in Waynesboro — himself a talented pianist and tenor — will direct the choir and orchestra, Stottlemyer said. “He’s very good at what he does,” she said. Besecker’s late father, Richard Besecker, a well-known vocal and instrumental music instructor at Greencastle-Antrim High School, was responsible for starting the Old Home Week worship service some years ago, according to Stottlemyer. Stottlemyer said he taught her piano and voice, as well as many others. “He was just totally amazing, and we all miss him very much,” she said. Stottlemyer said she and her husband, Barry Stottlemyer, will be singing in the choir and her daughter, author Diana Gruver, will conduct one of the readings between songs. Chairing the worship service committee and preparing for the event kept her busy. “I did it to serve our community,” Stottlemyer said. “I love Greencastle. “And I do it to bring the community together to worship our Lord and Savior.”

“We will be having an open house of the farmhouse, springhouse (blacksmith shop) and log cabin,” she said. “Visitors can walk through any of these buildings and our garden as well. The walking trails are always open to explore. I will be on site to talk to visitors.” BSA Troop 99 will have a BBQ lunch and bake sale from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to raise money to attend the Scout National Jamboree in 2023. The Blue Devil Scholars, members of the Greencastle-Antrim High School Chapter of Rho Kappa, the national social studies honor society, will be curating exhibits of local history. “We will have one of the upstairs rooms, which was part of the original Stover family farmhouse,” said Meagan Brockway, curriculum, instruction and literacy coordinator for the Greencastle-Antrim middle and high schools and an adviser to the Blue Devil Scholars. “We’ll have family photos, a family tree of the Stover family. Jenny Langer and Moonshine Society will bring blues to Music on the Square in Greencastle on Tuesday, Aug. 9. PROVIDED
Let them entertain you! By Michael D. Garcia
As the Greencastle-Antrim area again celebrates its triennial Old Home Week tradition, Music on the Square and Concert in the Park will offer something for everyone throughout the week. Candy Mowen has been co-chair of the band concerts for the past 10 years and involved with Old Home Week since 1977. “It’s tradition and I’d hate to see it change a lot, because a lot of our older folks are passing away,” Mowen said of Old Home Week. “We’re … hoping that the torch gets passed to the next generation … that the younger folks really know what it means to the community.”
Mike Bock, co-chair of the Music on the Square, said he thinks there will be a good turnout. “I think we’re gonna have a bigger crowd than we’ve had in the past,” Bock said. “It may even be bigger because people are now finally starting to get out and do things.” Concert in the Park takes place at 240 N. Carlisle St. at the Jerome R. King Playground Band Shell, and Music on the Square will take place near 2 Center Square. On Friday, Aug. 12, from 7 to 8:45 p.m., the United States Navy Band Cruisers will play on Kaley Field at Greencastle-Antrim High School prior to the Old Home Week fireworks at 9 p.m.

If it rains
Organizers cross their fingers and hope for good weather during Old Home Week, but two events will definitely be held rain or shine and there are contingency plans for others. The unofficial opening begins on Center Square at 11 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 7, and the OHW program says, “No matter what the weather brings, this event will be held!” Likewise, the Old Home Week photo will be taken on the Square at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 10, regardless of the weather. Concerts in the Park are scheduled each evening at Jerome R. King Playground. Trinity Lutheran Church, 1186 Jason Drive, is the rain location. The parade is supposed to begin at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 11. If it rains, the parade will be rescheduled for Saturday, Aug. 13, at 2 p.m. A concert by the United States Navy Band Cruisers is planned from 7:30 to 8:45 p.m. Friday, Aug. 12, on the Greencastle-Antrim School District’s Kaley Field prior to the Old Home Week fireworks at 9 p.m. If it rains Friday night, the concert will be moved inside to the high school auditorium and the fireworks postponed until Saturday, Aug. 13.

The historic Brown’s Mill School at the intersection of Angle and Brown’s Mill roads in the Village of Kauffman will be open 12:30 to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 6 and 7. The school was built in 1836, two years after the Pennsylvania Legislature passed the Free School Act. In 1921, the school closed and stood empty, deteriorating until 1934 when a memorial association was formed to restore the building. The Brown’s Mill School was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. In 2002, the nonprofit Franklin County Historical Society purchased the Brown’s Mill School from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission through the generosity of Thomas G. and Nancy H. Burkey and family. The school is dedicated to the memory of the Honorable Enos H. Horst and Mildred Sheller Horst. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated.
