Kelsey Gibson

Women in the industry by Kayla Johnson

One of the most common ways that people describe how cannabis has helped them is something along the lines of ‘It’s given me a whole new life.’ This sentiment is almost a core value of the Oklahoma cannabis industry, with businesses across the state breathing new, much needed economic life into some of the communities that needed it most. Buildings that have sat empty for years, even decades, are being cleaned up, used, and taken care of again, giving a home to dispensaries, processors and growers. One such building, an old motel in Park Hill, is in the final stages of construction and remodeling, destined to be the home of Tenkiller Trees, owned by 26 year old Kelsey Gibson. A native of Tahlequah, Gibson has always had a passion for the agricultural industry. “I’ve always wanted to be working in agriculture of some kind. As of now, I have quite a few animals, so it’s mostly been animal agriculture.” In addition to the animals she keeps, she’s always been a passionate gardener. “I’ve always kept a garden, and for the last two years, I’ve organized a seedling nursery in the spring.” That love of plants and all things agriculture played a big role in the new direction she took once 788 passed the vote. “When medical legalization hit Oklahoma, I knew I had a huge chance to do something I love that could actually contribute to the health and happiness of others, not to mention the chance to play with plants all day and actually make money doing it.” After a friend of hers offered her support, Gibson said she took the chance. “One of my long-time friends, another native Oklahoma woman, offered to back me in this endeavor, and I jumped at the opportunity.” That leap of faith led her to purchase a run down, abandoned motel in Park Hill, not far from Tahlequah. “It’s been empty for a long time, at least a decade or more. “ The motel was built in the fifties, and while it was in run-down condition, Gibson said it did have one major perk working for it. “It has a freshwater spring that we will be using for all of our water needs as well, I’m very excited about that.” Construction at the former motel will be finished by October of this year, and will house a processing building and greenhouse. The processing building will be home to the trimming, drying, curing, and office portions of the business, and Gibson

said they have plans to continue to grow. “Within the first two years of operation, we expect to start making our own edibles and concentrates to be available for sale.” Besides simply offering medicine to patients throughout Oklahoma, Gibson expanded on her plans for the former motel. “We also plan to host small, private dinners outside in the gardens surrounding the greenhouses, when the weather permits. Our gardens will feature a variety of herbs and flowers, and we’re also looking at a free flow bee hive as well.” Her passion for the industry extends far beyond just what cannabis can do for us as medicine. “I’m very excited about industrial hemp, in the future, I’m interested in producing hemp for bioplastics and even grain free livestock feed.” Gibson says her goals are not just for herself and her business, however. “I want to help bring Oklahoma, Green Country specifically, into the light as a powerhouse of high quality cannabis production. We will have a breeding program at Tenkiller Trees that has the goal 4

of breeding stable strains right here in Oklahoma that rival those grown where they’ve had a significant head start to their industry.” That desire to see Oklahoma succeed and flourish extends to her fellow growers and cannabis business owners. “It’s important to me for everyone in the industry and the state of Oklahoma to succeed in and benefit from cannabis cultivation.” Like far too many of us, Gibson knows too well the impact that the opioid crisis is having, both here in Oklahoma and across the entire country, but she can also see the impact cannabis can have on that problem. “There are very few people I know that haven’t been affected themselves, or lost a family member to, addiction to prescription pain medication. Cannabis keeps some people from needing to rely on opiates for pain management, and that in itself is good enough for me.” The relief cannabis provides covers a wide range of some of the patients who need it most, and Gibson states that that’s what moves her the most. “The elation in patients that I’ve seen talking about how their pain or their illness is much more manageable is almost enough to make you tear up. They’re so grateful to have an alternative, and even more grateful to be able to have that in their home without fear of legal repercussions.” As a twenty-six year old woman, Gibson admits that she’s not what most would expect a ‘typical’ business owner to be, but praised the industry around her. “So far, I’ve received nothing but tremendous support from the cannabis community here in Oklahoma. I’m sure I

will have those that doubt me for one reason or another, but that doesn’t intimidate me. If anything, the only way to make me work harder is to tell me there’s no possible way I’ll be able to do what I’m doing.” The community, Gibson says, helped whenever she asked. “Through the whole process of obtaining my license and getting things started, other people in the industry helped me every time I needed it. The owner of the Lifted Spirits here in Tahlequah took all of my calls and questions without a second thought, and so many local growers have offered their help and knowledge. I’ve really made some wonderful, and hopefully lifelong, friends.” In addition to the outpouring of support and knowledge from her fellow growers and business owners, Gibson pointed out that the cannabis industry has been more welcoming to women entrepreneurs than many others in the past. “Women bring important perspectives to the table that they may not have an outlet or opportunity to express yet. Women also represent a huge economic power, seeing as most of consumer purchases, roughly 70%-80%, are made by women! We know what customers are needing and wanting because we are a good portion of those customers ourselves.” As a woman who started with just an idea, and took a leap of faith, Gibson’s advice for women (and anyone, really) who wish to take the plunge into the cannabis industry is actually quite simple: “Do not hesitate! Talk to other women in the industry. We want and need you here.” 5

July Wasn’t Booming for Curaleaf The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning letter to CBD brand Curaleaf at the end of last month putting them on notice about their violations of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act in their marketing. This was not good news for the CBD giant because if you remember, CVS carries their brand in store. Immediately the stock for the company fell by 8% and CVS issued a statement that they would be pulling

some of the Curaleaf CBD products from its shelves. It is important to remember that the FDA has made it clear, they will not tolerate manufactures making pharmaceutical claims about CBD, not that they have a stance on the legality of cannabinoid oil. So, if you claim that your product can cure cancer or alleviates pain but it is not an FDA approved product, get ready for a letter or worse a knock on your door!

You Have the Wrong Left Handed Okies! However, our story doesn’t stop there. The owner of Left Handed Okies in Shady Point would like everyone to know they have no business association with the dispensary of the same name in Spiro. They would also like everyone to know they are against meth and opioids and that is why they got into this industry to fight the epidemic. So next time you are in Shady Point remember the good people of Left Handed Okies and not the unfortunate story connected to the name.

Last month, Jeffrey Peregrino, was booked into the LeFlore County Jail facing two counts of trafficking Methamphetamine. He is the owner of Left Handed Okies Medical Marijuana Dispensary In Spiro Oklahoma. Jeffrey is alleged to have sold meth to an undercover Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics (OBN) on more than one occasion! Of course, the dispensary in Spiro is under an emergency shut down due to the circumstances.

OKLAHOMA’S NEW LEGISLATION AND HIPAA: INCOMPATIBLE?! BY: SARAH LEE GOSSETT PARRISH, CANNABIS LAWYER1

Oklahoma’s Governor Stitt signed the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana and Patient Protection Act (also known as the “Unity Bill” and now, the “Unity Act”) into law on March 14, 2019, and it becomes effective at the end of this month. In Unity’s wake, a series of trailer bills, including Senate Bill 1030, were passed and signed into law. I have written several Herb-Age columns and numerous blog posts2 about the Unity Act (“Unity”) and its trailer bills. Notably, the issue which is the subject of my writing here concerns HIPAA3, and Senate Bill 1030’s provisions that give courts and law enforcement access to the medical marijuana use registry information and patients’ cards—provisions which are, by their very existence, incompatible with HIPAA and contrary to the language of Unity. UNITY LANGUAGE. Unity provides that “[t]he handling of any records maintained in the [medical marijuana use] registry shall comply with all relevant state and federal laws, including, but not limited to, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). See Unity, Section 7., (A). and (C). Section (C) further provides that records “regarding a medical marijuana licensee” … “shall be marked as confidential, shall not be made available to the public and shall only be made available to the licensee, designee of the licensee, any physician of the licensee or the caregiver of the licensee…”. That’s all well and good. But then, there’s Senate Bill 1030. SENATE BILL 1030 GIVES LAW ENFORCEMENT AND COURTS ACCESS TO PATIENTS’ CARDHOLDER STATUS AND INFORMATION. S.B. 1030 states that “[t]he State Department of Health shall make available all information displayed on medical marijuana licenses, as well as whether or not the license is valid, to law enforcement electronically through the Oklahoma Law Enforcement Telecommunications System.” See S.B. 1030 at Section 4. (C).4

What information is on an OMMA medical marijuana patient card? The patient’s name, date of birth, patient ID number, and city of residence are all on the card. In other words, “Protected Health Information” under HIPAA, because this information, including a person’s status as a medical marijuana patient, is personally identifiable information related to the person’s health (among other reasons too detailed to cover here). As though this is not, in and of itself, disturbing enough, the website for the Oklahoma Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (OLETS) states that its “sole purpose is to provide for the interstate, intrastate and interagency exchange of criminal justice related information.” Thus, S.B. 1030 equates information on a medical marijuana patient’s license obtained from the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Authority, including a person’s status as a licensed medical marijuana patient with “criminal justice related information.” WAIT. WHAT?! Equally disturbing, at Section 5 of S.B. 1030, is a provision that such information (displayed on medical marijuana licenses, as well as whether or not the license is valid,) “shall be accessible” to “[a]ny court in this state.” Just let that one sink in. Medical marijuana patients’ status front and center in divorce proceedings, wrongful termination cases, the list goes on and on…. These provisions in S.B. 1030 clearly violate HIPAA, not to mention Oklahoma medical marijuana patients’ rights to privacy. This piece of legislation, which will become effective shortly, blatantly ignores the protections afforded Americans by HIPAA. How can this be? Stay tuned.

From the Front Lines

The Oklahoma Medical Cannabis Movement

by Chip Paul Cynthia Paul, Shelley Free (Executive Director of Oklahomans for Health), and myself have attended several organizational meeting over the last few weeks. A lot of commercial interests, activist interests, and just interested parties are beginning to talk about a consolidated and comprehensive

marijuana law which would incorporate decriminalization of marijuana, medical marijuana, and hemp. While Oklahomans For Health has never been about decriminalization of marijuana, something that I am beginning to personally realize is this. We have the best medical marijuana program in the country, bar none. Fastest to roll out, fastest to 50,000 patients, then 100,000, and now 150,000 patients. We led the nation in patients as a percentage of population (4%). We will have the 3rd largest medical program in the country by the end of this year (behind only California and Michigan). Our fine lawmakers have already begun to erode our program. We still have some loud no voices in positions of power (something to consider next election cycle).

So how do we protect our medical marijuana program? Leave it to lawmakers? I think not. How do we build proper testing and labeling standards that cross medical marijuana, hemp, and potentially recreational marijuana? Leave it to lawmakers? How do we ensure our hemp program leads the nation like our medical marijuana program? Leave it to lawmakers? While some of our lawmakers have been champions of our program, they are a minority. When we, as a community, stay unified, we are a force. We will start work on a comprehensive marijuana petition which will further protect the medical program, will build a decriminalization program, and will incorporate hemp. Watch for news of the petitioning effort in the near future.

Cannabis is known for having some pretty bold scents and flavors to go along with some pretty powerful medicine. From fruitier strains to bold, piney notes, terpenes offer an incredible boost not only for how in affects you, but the scent that goes along with it. This month’s pick, Exodus Cheese, is no exception. Also known as U.K. Cheese, this classic strain smells exactly like the name suggests: very cheesy, with a very powerful undertone akin to wet dirt. The first thing I thought of when I smelled it was blue cheese because it has a very distinct and very powerful odor. Though not necessarily unpleasant to most, the potency of it took me by surprise, and if you’re sensitive to strong smells, this is important to keep in mind. If you have a smellproof container or bag, this is the time to consider using it, if you don’t want your home, purse, or bag to smell like bud. Though the exact origins of Exodus Cheese aren’t truly known, it’s believed to be a distinctive phenotype of Skunk #1, which could explain the intense aroma that goes hand in hand with this strain. Be warned: this will stink up your house when you’re smoking. As strikingly cheese-esque as it is on the nose, it is more olivey in appearance. Generally, Exodus Cheese nugs are a bright to medium grassy-green color, and in combination with the dark orange hairs that cover this moderately frosty hybrid, it has a very foresty, fluffy appearance, especially

under the light where the trichomes almost give it a dewy appearance. While the buds I tried were a bit smaller, this strain generally produces big, fluffy, beautiful buds. Despite the less-than-iced-over appearance, Exodus Cheese offers potent and quick acting effects. While it’s a hybrid, it does lean more into a sativa, and it offers a balance of energized relaxation; you’ll want to do things, but you’ll want to listen to some great music while you do it. If you’re any kind of creative person, this could be a great strain for evening creating, or hitting those last minute deadlines without getting overly tired right away. It can be great before a social situation as well, if you’re feeling anxious or stressed, and it offers a great physical relaxation to go along with the mental one once you’ve finished your to-do list. While it’s balanced more than many strains, continued consumption can increase the odds for couch lock, so keep that in mind if you’re wanting to be productive while you medicate. Because it offers that great relaxation, Exodus Cheese is a powerful choice for patients in need. The balanced effects it brings to the table can be exceedingly useful for those who suffer from moderate to severe stress or anxiety, and can even be effective for those struggling with depression. Physically, it helps relieve pain, especially chronic

pain from conditions like Lupus, and it’s great for those who have nerve pain, as the relaxation it offers helps to sooth flare ups. That extends to those who suffer from migraines, but the mild, relaxed effects also make it a solid choice for those who may suffer from any paranoia, panic attacks, or who just prefer a more mild strain for their doses. While it does pack quite a punch, it also brings some serious dry mouth and dry eyes along with it, and in excess, it could be sedating enough to make one dizzy, so if you begin to feel parched or unsteady, drink some water and wait before consuming anymore just yet. While the strain may not be as powerful, either in the energizing or relaxation arenas, as other strains, it offers an unusually well-balanced range of effects and benefits for patients who are looking for a mild, motivating strain that melts right into relaxation when they’re ready for it. If you find yourself at odds with stress, anxiety, or pain during your week, whether work related or not, Exodus Cheese could be exactly what you need to end your week on a high note.

Cooking with grass by Kayla Johnson

As quickly as it arrived, summer is already winding down, and the school year is kicking off across the state. This time of year always seems to kick off the busy season, with the holidays approaching quicker than any of us are willing to admit, and if your schedule is starting to look a little full, any little thing you can do to help yourself get ahead for each week will make a big difference. For many people, meal prepping is a big help in saving time throughout the week, but for today, we will start a little smaller, by sharing a recipe that combines both a healthier snack option, and your favorite dose of cannabis based medicine. Granola bars have become incredibly popular to make at home over the last several years, due in part to the fact that they’re just so versatile. Whatever kind of granola bar you like, you can make, and for patients, that includes those of the medicated variety. They can be made nut free, dairy free (if you have medicated coconut

oil), even gluten free if needed, and the recipe can easily be doubled for a large batch, since they’re great to make ahead of time. The recipe we’re sharing be- low is incredibly easy, takes about an hour in total, and delivers a chewy, filling granola bar. It includes chocolate chips, walnuts, dried cranberries, and coconut flakes, but if you prefer, you should swap those ingredients out for others that better suit your tastes or dietary needs. This recipe makes approximately 24 granola bars and as always, the dose of each bar will depend on the strength of the butter or oil you’re using, so keep that in mind!

Note: For this recipe, if you have children in the home who do not have a medical cannabis card, it’s especially important that you label these bars of goodness properly and ensure they’re out of the reach of little hands in search of a treat, and even other unsuspecting grownups.

Canna-granola Bars 4. Bake until a golden brown color, about 35 minutes, Ingredients: and allow it to cool for at least half an hour before 4-5 cups quick-cook oatmeal cutting. Store in an airtight container, and enjoy as 1 C all purpose flour needed! 1 TSP baking soda ⅔ C melted cannabutter (or oil, if you prefer dairy free) ⅔ C honey ⅓ C brown sugar, tightly packed 2 TSP vanilla extract 2 C mixture of chocolate chips, dried cranberries, coconut flakes and walnuts, you can add as little/much of the these as you prefer. 9x13 pan Cooking spray/oil Directions 1. Heat oven to 375* 2. Spray or grease your 9x13 pan, set aside. 3. In a large bowl, combine all of your ingredients, and mix thoroughly. Spread the mixture into the pan and press by hand, making it as even as possible. 14

Sleepy’s Garden bCompiled by Sleepy

Providing the patients of Oklahoma with top quality medicine This month I sat down with the Co-founders of Rosebuds Kayvon Olomi and Alex Rose in Tulsa, Ok. I was super stoked for this visit because Alex taught me how to grow in California. We were both born and raised in Tulsa but at that time I was living in Los Angeles, working at a “real job.” While Alex was living in Oceanside, growing cannabis and playing in a band with some of my friends. I would go down and hangout every weekend I could. We would all go over to Alex’s like it was Eldorado. I’m sure most people reading this know the feeling you had the first time you saw a cannabis plant. When you walk in the room and that sweet, sweet ganja smell smacks you right in the face by well circulated wall mounted fans. Your eyes widen and your mood brightens. The massive colas sway back and forth with the breeze like a beautiful hula dancer inviting you in for a closer look. The trichomes glisten from the blinding light of high pressure sodium, with the sticky residue on your fingers as you try to peel them a part. The feeling of knowing you’re about to be smoking straight chronic in a few more weeks as you laugh and dap your homies. Man, I love marijuana!! Alex provided me with that life changing experience. After watching Alex for a year and slowly starting to hate the 9-to-5 more and more, I started

a little two lighter in my bedroom. I would call Alex for tips and with his knowledge I was able to skip a lot of rookie mistakes. As we both continued sharpening our skills, the industry pulled us in different directions. I went back to school to learn organics in Iowa and Alex ended up in Michigan for a couple years. I haven’t seen his plants in a few years so I had to get an interview with him to chop it up like the old days. I know he’s going to be providing the patients of Oklahoma with top quality medicine. Sleepy- So what’s up man? It’s been a long time. Tell me about how you got started growing and how you ended up back in Oklahoma. Alex- Basically, I had the interest to grow when I was young in Oklahoma. I would go to borders with my mom when I was fifth-teen and sneak a High Times magazine home. I just started becoming more and more interested in it and thought it was really cool craft. Then I went to Pasadena, Ca in 2007 for music school. That’s where I picked up my first grow from my sister’s boyfriend at the time. He was the one that taught me how to grow. After music school I moved back to Tulsa but I still had the passion to grow. Since, it was illegal in Oklahoma I moved to Oceanside, Ca to continue honing my craft. I hopped around southern 16

California for a while then I moved to Michigan. Michigan was under the caregiver act so it wasn’t licensed like it is here. It was more like how California use to be. You could be a caregiver and grow 99 plants. So yeah, once I heard Oklahoma passed 788 I knew I had to come back home. This is where my support system is. I couldn’t turn down this opportunity. Sleepy- So how did you and Kayvon meet and what made you guys decide on Rosebuds? Alex- A mutual friend of ours, Perry, told each one of us individually that we should meet each other. When we were in California Kayvon actually almost invested but it wasn’t serious enough at that time for him. Then about a year and a half ago he reach out when I was in Michigan and started picking my brain about it. So, we started putting together a plan. We picked it up and put it down like 3 separate times but finally it felt right so we pulled the trigger. Kayvon- Ya, that’s the truth. The name came from the grow master Alex Rose and these are his buds, so Rosebuds. It just kind of went together. Sleepy- What kind of growing method are you running now a

days? Are you using pesticides? Alex- We’re Hydroponic and we do drain to waste but we don’t use any harsh chemicals. We definitely believe in providing our patients with the cleanest flower and any by products from that flower. We want to be known for putting out the highest quality possible. We always make sure that were keeping everything clean and as organic as possible. When you smoke Rosebuds flower the ash will be white. That’s one way to tell you are smoking clean flower Sleepy- how long have you been growing?

Alex- The first time was in California when I was nineteen. So, that’s 14 years now. Sleepy- So, you guys just had your first harvest and dispensary grand opening. What’s your favorite strains right now? Alex- I’d say Wedding Cake, Layered Cake and Wonka Bar’s #11 are my favorites. The Wedding Cake tastes like sugary cake. Layered Cake takes me back to California and the diesel OG’s. The Wonka bar’s because of its terpine profile and complex flavor. Kayvon- That a tough question. Candy Rain if I am needing a good Indica. It has beautiful colors and 17

it smells and taste so good! If I am looking to start the day with one of our Sativas, I would go with the Logan’s Run or Triple Cheese. Out of our hybrids, you can never go wrong with the Layered Cake and Blackberry Trainwreck. Sleepy- What kind of an experience can people expect as a customer at Rosebuds? Alex- Our vision has been the same since the beginning. We only want to sell our own bud. So, say you want to get the black dog. Right next to the black dog flower will be the black dog oil. All the edibles will be made with oil from our flower. Everything in here will be made with Rosebuds flower. We will be one of the few dispensaries in Tulsa that gets all of its products from the grow on site. So it will be a farmto-table like experience. Growing it in the back we can tell customers everything about our strains and how they were grown because we grew them right here. It’s not like we are buying it from someone else and we don’t know how their grow looks or what they feed and spray on the plants. This way we will have full quality control and you won’t be able to get Rosebuds anywhere else besides the Rosebuds dispensary. Kayvon- Couldn’t have said it better. We are really focused on providing top-shelf products and experience and that’s just half of it. The foundation of Rosebuds is our mission of spreading love and building the community. This is what drives us. There’s a lot of love and a lot of care and I believe everyone that comes to Rosebuds is going to feel like family and that they’re part of something bigger than just the product. Alex- We just really want to create

a brand where when people think about Rosebuds, it’s not just good cannabis. It’s about the community. It’s feeling like family, it’s doing all the little things right and not cutting corners. We really want to partner with the community and help as much as possible. When God blesses you with these kinds of amazing things, you give it to other people, that’s what it’s for.

I can vouch for the quality of products and the passion that drives the Rosebuds brand. I personally saw all the trials and tribulations that Alex has been through over the years to get this point. So if you’re in Tulsa, stop by their store at 4111 S 70th E Ave. You will not be disappointed by the quality of their products and the knowledgeable customer service.

Microdosing With Cannabis by Brittney Graham

High THC count seems to be all the rage these days. We see it all the time in our social media feeds and even on marketing for local dispensaries. With all the focus on high percentages and even bigger medicated relief, it is hard to imagine that there is a following for less consumption of THC as opposed to more. The trend is called “Microdosing” and is taking over the way we view the consumption of medical marijuana. I know what you might be thinking because it was the first thing that popped into my mind! Isn’t Microdosing linked to hallucinogens like LSD or Shrooms? Let me back it up a minute and go over what Microdosing we are referring to in this instance and what it is exactly, basically, it is the act of taking small amounts of Cannabis in order to gain medical benefits of THC while being able to avoid the mind-numbing (psychoactive) effects that can really mess with the demands of everyday life. It is also a better way for some patients to medicate as effects of high THC makes them feel sick or “off ”. For example, THC can be very helpful for treating anxiety however, too much of it can actually cause anx-

iety to form or even get worse. Keeping this in mind, patients are now turning to Microdosing to treat conditions such as depression, anxiety, pain, and to help improve sleep. When beginning with this method it is important to remember that there is a tremendous variance in the amount of THC that will result in a high feeling. This feeling is affected by individual differences in a number of things that include but are not limited too; liver metabolism, previous usage, and Cannabinoid receptors. This means that Microdosing Cannabis is different for every single person so keep experimenting until you find the right dose for your body. Starting off low is the best advice that health care professionals are giving when it comes to this method. Beginning with very low dosages like 2.5 milligrams or even lower, maintaining that level for a couple of days, and increasing the dosage if necessary are good guidelines, to begin with, in general. If you are a daily cannabis user and want to try this method out, it is recommended to obtain from THC for 48 hours before starting. This gives your endocannabinoid system time to

reset and get back to baseline before you begin your Microdosing journey. From there, the goal is to give the dose that will give the least noticeable effect. Be aware, for some, that is as low as 1 milligram! Of course, it is always recommended to consult your health care professional for tailored instructions. When it comes to actually Mircodosing Cannabis, there are quite a few options to choose from. If smoking or vaping is what you find most appealing, try taking one puff and waiting a few minutes to feel any effect, and then take another if necessary. But, let’s be honest, it can be very hard to measure the percentage or amount of anything gin a puff right? In which case, oils, tinctures, and edibles are the way to go when accuracy is the aim. Of course, it is important to note that testing on the products of your choice is something highly desirable as well since this method relies heavily on correct information. Regardless of the method you choose, Microdosing has proven to be beneficial in the quest for knowledge on Cannabis and its medicinal uses and is a viable option for medicinal benefits.

Patient of the month

It’s becoming hard to deny the fact that cannabis helps veterans. Cannabis saves veterans. For some, it’s the PTSD relief, while others rely on its pain relief or insomnia-crushing effects. Over 80% of veterans in the United States support medical cannabis programs In fact, you would likely be hard pressed to find a veteran, even here in Oklahoma, who hasn’t benefited from cannabis in some way, and Dillon Reseck is no exception. A native of Long Beach, California, Reseck has called Oklahoma his home since 2010. “I was stationed at Tinker Air Force Base, and I honestly can’t imagine living anywhere else. It’s really become home for me.” Born and raised in California, Reseck can’t help but point out the humor in it. “Funny enough, medicinal cannabis was legal in California when I was a child, but it was so badly stigmatized that I was afraid to mess with it when I was younger.” Like so many of us, he was taught it was a drug by the school system and D.A.R.E., and it wasn’t until he was an adult that he finally did try it. “It was a very medicinal experience. That whole day, I was laying in bed with a migraine, and I immediately felt better.” He says since that time, he’s viewed it as a medicine. “Since the passing of 788, though, it has become my medicine, thanks to the easy and safe access 788 provides.” Now out of the Air Force, Reseck credits cannabis with completely changing his medical life. “I’m a 100% disabled veteran, before legalization, I was on a plethora of prescription medications. Thanks to cannabis, now I’m on ZERO!” Reseck says before, he was taking pills for almost every ailment he had. Now, with a wide range of cannabis and CBD products, he chooses how he prefers to medicate based on what works best for him, rather than simply what he’s given, and his pain doesn’t manage his life now. “I don’t wake up dreading my life, I know that a migraine that would have kept me in bed all day before will be gone within ten minutes. My pain doesn’t keep me from having a good time, and I can drive ten minutes in any direction, and find a dispensary.”

20

by Kayla Johnson Reseck also acknowledged that not only cannabis, but the community that comes along with it has played a big role in his health and wellbeing. “We all feel alone at some point in our life. I felt very alone around the time cannabis was legalized here, but this community showed me that I wasn’t. That’s powerful. I’ve always wanted to help people, but the love and sense of family that I have now has really inspired me.” Reseck also took time to give credit to another important piece of his life: his wife. “I’m married to my best friend. She also uses cannabis medicinally, and she’s just as active in the community as I am. She’s very supportive of me.” Reseck, along with Daniel Stevens, a previous featured patient, is involved with the Balanced Veteran’s organization, and is working to help educate veterans on what cannabis can do for them.”It’s important for veterans to know that if they’re looking to try cannabis, they shouldn’t be worried, because the VA will not punish you or remove benefits for participating in legal state medical cannabis programs.” His encouragement for others to try cannabis doesn’t end at just veterans, and he offered a bit of advice for potential or new patients. “Cannabis isn’t always for everyone, but don’t be afraid to experiment. Don’t give up if you have a bad experience, try something else until you find what works for you.” Like so many of us, Reseck knows how different his life might have been if the majority of the state had not made their voices heard last June. “I’ve never been in a more accepting and loving community. I’m truly beyond thankful for all of those who voted for this, and those that bring the love and positivity to this community.”

Small town cannabis by Kayla Johnson

Small town, Oklahoma can be a less than accepting place, no matter which small town you end up in, and while all towns and cities have their own problems, small towns in particular have a reputation of being less inclined to change, at least not at the pace of the larger towns around them. It can occasionally feel as if everybody knows everyone else’s business, and sometimes, they probably really do. I speak from experience, as a small town native, and I’ve even experienced some of the less than pleasant perspectives of small town life that simply add to the ‘stuck in time’ stereotype. Cannabis patients in both metro areas and small farm communities have likely become used to some degree of disdain from their fellow residents over the years, whether it comes in the form of a glare or a disapproving look to outright threats or violence. Oklahoma is firmly planted in the Bible Belt, and even as support for 788 began to really gain momentum, the opposition became more outspoken and noticeable as well, and this was especially true for small towns throughout the state. However, a little over a year later, I’ve noticed a curious change in not only my small town, but many others throughout Oklahoma. Slowly, but surely, the opposition is quieting down, and the support is not only growing, it’s openly growing. We are set to pass over 200,000 registered patients by the end of the year, and while Tulsa and

Oklahoma City have established themselves as the state’s two cannabis capitals, there’s a quiet, but rising force of small town patients that are shaking off decades of fear, prejudice, and even outright lies about cannabis to disprove the stereotypes, and to inspire change in their neighbors and coworkers. Many of Oklahoma’s small towns are farming communities, and many of the residents of these towns are older, from generations that have been against cannabis for decades simply because they were always told it was a terrible drug, just like so many of us. However, unlike the generations before them, the residents of these small towns, both younger and older, have access to more information and knowledge than ever before, and that includes information about cannabis, the real information. The more you know, the more you grow, truly, and because people know more, they are wanting to try it, rather than talk down about it or those who do. And once they’ve tried it, they’re talking about it, openly, without fear or shame, to their friends, their neighbors, their kids, even their older grandchildren.. People are talking about it, they’re trying it for themselves, and it’s slowly becoming just another part of small town life, even where it was once voted strongly against. My little town is the county seat of a county that voted no on 788. Like many other towns, there were billboards and signs along our 22

highways and even in some yards, urging citizens to vote against the bill. When the bill passed, I heard many, many unhappy discussions in our small town grocery store the next several days, with opponents of the law wondering what impact it would have on the state. Our sole dispensary opened earlier this year, right on the main road of our town, and while I was thrilled, I admit that I also held my breath a bit, worried that they would have problems of some kind. Despite that opposition that had been so apparent just a year before, the response from the community has been welcoming, and patients who were once afraid of admitting they even had their card here have become comfortable and confident, being able to shop without worry in their own town. Now, patients who bump into each other in our little grocery store discuss their latest purchases from the dispensary. Moms are speaking to their mom friends about how much a joint outside after their kids are asleep has helped them relax way more than wine ever did. Coworkers are discussing their favorite growing methods on their lunch break. I was born here, and never thought I’d see this day. Even when the opposition to legal, medical cannabis rears its head up to raise a fuss, the support for patients, even from those who are not patients themselves, is noticeable, where before the vote, many small town residents may have

feared to put out a sign in favor of State Question 788. At the end of July, I myself had the police called on me by a neighbor because of my plants, and as soon as I mentioned to the officers that I had my card and produced it for them, there was no issue. The officers that responded were polite, professional, and even asked if they could take a look at my plants, as they’d never seen one in decent health before. They continued to ask questions, but not about my license. They simply wanted to know about the plant, how big it would get, why it was in a fabric pot and not in the

ground, and as we chatted, I realized they were really just trying to learn more about it. One of them even said that until I handed him my license, he’d never seen a medical cannabis card before. Instead of simply moving on with their day, they made an effort to educate themselves on something that they’ve been against for decades. Small town police departments tend to have a harsh reputation themselves, and it really changed my perspective on how cannabis has changed small towns, if even that stereotype is slowly becoming unraveled. Despite the naysayers,

stereotypes and opposition, cannabis is succeeding, even in small town; the proof isn’t in the pudding, it’s in the people, even the police sometimes. No town, big or small, is perfect, especially in how it deals with cannabis and the citizens who use it as medicine, even with the new laws passed. There is still a great deal of work to be done, in regards to continuing to educate all Oklahomans about the benefits of cannabis, and why it’s legitimate medicine, but even the smallest town victory counts.

The Green Grow Expo Lawton Brittney Graham

Investing in cannabis education, native Oklahoma company Green Grow Expo has been making waves in both the Oklahoma City and Tulsa cannabis communities with their spotlight on Cannabis education and brand awareness. On the weekend of July 20th, Green Grow made another splash in Lawton uplifting patients, Oklahoma’s MMJ program, and top brands who operate with integrity and who keep patients and authentic education first. After attending the weekend festivities, I am proud to say that the welcome was warm for the expo from the Southwest corner of Oklahoma. Saturday, also known as Canna Busines Day, was full of educational classes and knowledgable speakers. First up was Forming, Building & Marketing Your Canna-Business with speakers such as; Chris Cotner from Bethany Law Center, Chilly Mack owner of Only Mr. Mack’s, and Shelly Free with Oklahomans for Health, potential and current business owners were equipped with more knowledge to prepare them for the road ahead.

Next up on the educational circuit was Medicinal Plant: Cultivating, Processing, and the Cannabinoid System. With the speaker line up boasting Bryan Wachsman with Living Soil Solutions, Jace Rivera with Green Praire Farms, and Mathew Messuri with Red Dirt Labs, it is safe to say that this was a class that no one wanted to miss! The final class of the day was the OK Unity Bill, Federal Framework, and Cooking with Cannabis Seminar. Chip Paul with Oklahomans for Health, Chef Tony Freitas with Green and Clean Chefs, and Kyle Felling with FAST labs were brilliant with their dialogue and presentations. Especially Chef Tony, as he made us all drool over what was to come with his Sunday Brunch! Both Saturday and Sunday were filled with 47 exhibitors throughout the expo that were overfilled with the knowledge they were just dying to share with the crowd. Watching local brands such as Fluffy’s Apothecary and Silver Leaf Dispensary light up when speaking to the next onlooker walking up to their booths was an instant feeling of

excitement and joy. From growing mediums to lab testing, cannabis education and brand awareness were bouncing off the walls in a joyous chorus, so much so that one almost forgets how new this all really is! On Sunday, Chef Tony,( remember the drooling? ), and the Green Grow Expo Organizers invited the community to a 5-course brunch (medicated options available) and a poker chip run after the educational portion of the expo had run its course. The weekend was closed out with a relaxing chill vibe dedicated to cannabis and the patients of Southwest Oklahoma. In all, I am looking forward to seeing what this Expo brings to Oklahoma in the future as it has proven to be an educational tool in the present. Did you miss out on all the fun? No worries, the Green Grow Expo will be in Tulsa on September 2729th at the Renaissance Hotel and in Oklahoma City next year on April 3-6th! Visit www.GreenGrowEXPO.com for more information.

The Guide to Shopping for Vape Cartridges Brittney Graham

It is time to get honest about THC vape cartridges, they are so confusing! I don’t know about you, but with terms like live resin, cured resin, full-spectrum, and terpene profile my head is in a spin before I even walk into a dispensary. So, naturally, I did some digging on this subject to help those of us out there that want a clean, honest, and beneficial medical marijuana experience with their vape cartridges. With research in hand, I have come up with a list of four important things to remember when shopping for THC vape carts. Before I begin my list, I think it is important to note what we are talking about exactly. A THC cartridge is a pre-filled, disposable container filled with your choice of THC oil. The container is placed onto a battery to heat the oil. Once the oil in the cart reaches a certain temperature, it turns into vapor. Once inhaled, you do not have to worry about the negative effects of smoke hitting your lungs. 1. Cannabis Compounds Do Not Make Up The Majority Of The Oil In the Cartridge. THC oil cartridges and vape oils are more often than not mixed with one or more cutting agents to dilute the solution. The most common of them being coconut oil, MCT oil, propylene glycol (PG), polyethylene glycol (PEG), and vegetable glycerin (VG).In short, avoiding cutting agents might be the best route as PEG’s may be contaminated with Ethelyn oxide, which is a carcinogen and Propylene glycol can lead to adverse reactions when heated such as muscle pain or a soar throat. 2. Avoid Products With Hydrocarbons Picking products tested in a lab for residu-

26

al solvents is an important tip to consider when shopping for THC vape carts. Distilled oiled go through a, you will never guess this one, distillation process. Cannabinoids and flavonoids are removed from the plant in this process and it is usually done using carbon dioxide. This means that fractional distillation might be the best option for more consistent medicine since it is lacking in hydrocarbons. 3. Pay Attention to What The Disposal Cartridge is Made Out Of Be sure to stay away from plastic containers or low-grade wire when it comes to the makeup of your cartridge and battery. Remember, the better the coil and quality material, the better the flavor of the product. 4. How is the Liquid Moving in the Cart? When you move the cart around in your hands, does the liquid inside move fast? There is usually an air bubble, does it move from one end to the other in a small window of time. If this is the case, please revert back to the first tip as there seems to be cutting agents left inside the container. Remember, when shopping for THC vape cartridges and oil be sure to always do and you are wanting to purchase. This means requesting or looking up lab testing results to ensure the quality of the product you are getting and to receive the optimal medicinal benefits. Also, research the strains you are wanting to try and be sure to watch out for fake terpene profiles. Now go forth equipped with your new knowledge!
