I just voted... Driving up to draw my choices of “leaders” down on a slip of paper to go into a machine that I have been taught to trust to count those choices accurately.... I thought about what it really means to me. I remember the first time I was old enough to vote. I was actually quite excited. You know....still playing it cool, but excited inside. I was going to change the world with my vote. In my head, of course, everyone was going to vote the way I did. I was on the “right” side. Right? After that things went down hill for me. I became more and more bitter about the process. I found it revolting to be asked to allow some of the candidates to make important decisins for our community and society. Once I did make those decisions I seemed to dissapoint time and again. Jaded... None of it matters. One little mark makes no difference in the stupidity of humanity. There are wolves about and they are surrounding us and they will attack one day. Still jaded... a career in media and communications does not help much. Then I thought of the “they sacraficed for our freedom”... No, then I really thought about it. Not as a conformed victim of this shaped society. I thought about what it meant to sacrafice. I imagined someone with the exact same mind set as me going up against those that believe the only way is their way. Saying no to the knuckle dragging mentallity of having to choose sides. Standing up for something at least. It’s hard to understand that life is not a measuring contest when so many of our elected “leaders” are put into positions of service and they tend to consider them as positions of power. In order for me to take the innitiative to step into a line a vote I have to believe there are still decent caring human beings left on this planet. I hope we are all blessed with the ability to cast our decisions on a little slip of paper for people that are intelligent enough to help society merge. James Bridges CEO/Publisher Herb•age Magazine

Kid Lennon (aka Barrett Tarr, aka Chief Peace) is not afraid to tackle deep subjects in his music. In his song “20/20” off his newest album, “Letters to Lennon,” he spits out the verse “I was born in ‘93. Never thought I’d make it past the age of 18.” For the Southmoore High graduate, these aren’t just words to shock and awe his listeners; there was a time in his life when he wasn’t worried about longevity on this planet. “I always thought I was so sad, I would give up at one point. You know, I don’t really want to be alive,” Kid Lennon said. “I didn’t want to ever kill myself as a kid, but I just didn’t want to be born. It was like I’d always tell my mom, ‘Why was I born? You don’t like me. I don’t get this. I’m confused. It feels like no one likes me around. Why am I even here?’ So, I think music helped me find that purpose. Purpose is everything in life.” That period in Kid Lennon’s life may seem like a long time ago. Now he is living the life he has created for himself as a burgeoning rapper whose talents stretch into a variety of different realms. However, as Kid Lennon nears almost a decade in the game, he stands at a precarious point in his career. He has made some noise in the music industry that has garnered the attention of bigname celebrities and obtained strong endorsements, such as Red Bull. He has a plan on where he wants to go and how he wants to get there. Yet, it’s a position countless artists have gotten to in the past, only to see themselves fall by the wayside to never be heard from again. But Kid Lennon says that won’t be him for one undeniable reason. “There’s no other me. That’s what I’m realizing,” Kid Lennon said. “I’m very much in my own lane, especially in Oklahoma City. I’m definitely in my own lane of rap. So, there’s never going to be another me. And that’s all I have to do, is be the best me. And I think if I can make great things, greatness always shows. People always see greatness, if you can do great things. If I can make something great that the world sees, then cool, I’m going to do that slowly but surely.” This laser focus on becoming one of the best rappers in the world has not always been part of Kid Lennon’s plan. In fact, for much of his youth, he readily admits he just trying to figure out who he was.

“I didn’t feel very understood. My mother’s a teacher, a special ed teacher. She’s very strict, and I was, like, an opposer,” Kid Lennon said. “I wanted to question Herbage Magazine everything. And I don’t think that’s fun for any parent. But it takes certain people to want to sit and explain that to a kid. So it ended up just us butting heads at all times. I found with me and my mom, it was never that motherly love. I went to my grandma for that. Then my grandma passed away in fifth grade, and I kind of felt lost. I was like, ‘Oh man, I’m really alone.’” It didn’t help that Kid Lennon and his mother were constantly on the move. “I moved around Oklahoma and Texas a lot as a kid. I went to like six elementary schools. My mom was a single mom,” Kid Lennon said. “We were moving a lot. So it really wasn’t like getting used to a town. It was more like, I’d go from a big city in Texas to a small town in Oklahoma, to a big town in Oklahoma.” While Kid Lennon found his purpose in life to keep him going, it has not shielded him from death. Even though he has yet to reach the age of 30, he’s already been to 15 funerals in his lifetime. Many are friends from his days at Southmoore High. “I’d say 10 out of the 15 were opioids-related,” Kid Lennon said. “There’s always the harder stuff that got them. One of my good friends got shot, randomly robbed by a 14- and a 15-year-old. I had a friend get hit by a car right after high school. So it was some random ones. So it did seem cursed.” It was because of all that he had been through and witnessed, Kid Lennon decided that his music was not going to be a reflection of that type of pain. He wanted to take his rap and life in a different direction. That was reflected in his original stage name, “Chief Peace.” That was the name he went by when things started to build for him in 2016. That included releasing the “Blue Peace” EP. On May 24, 2016, he then had a chance encounter with NBA Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal at Hubbly Bubbly in Oklahoma City. As he was hosting a poetry night and saw Shaq walk in, he knew he had to take his shot. Or as he called it, his Eminem moment. He departed from the script and performed a couple of his own rap songs. That included “Hippy Kid.” “After I got done, they were like, ‘Hey, Shaq wants to see you,’” Kid Lennon said. “I went back and he was like, ‘Can you do that again?’ I was like, ‘If you’d be my hype man.’ So he literally ended up getting on stage. We did it again. It got on TMZ, all that crap just because, quick thinking. You got to be quick with it.” Once the video with Shaq blew up on social media, Kid Lennon knew this was his moment. The very next day he built a website and hired someone to handle public relations. He then started getting calls from radio stations and promoters. That eventually led to him opening for Lil Wayne and 2 Chainz at the Tulsa BOK Center in August of that year. “Opening for Wayne was a crazy thing to me because he’s the reason I started. Started doing music was because of Wayne,” Kid Lennon said. “You can go from watching him on the screen to really being in a room where you deserve to be in a room on stage with him. It’s crazy you can do that. And it might take a little longer than you expect, but I felt ready when I was there and that’s all that mattered.” He has also opened for Lil Uzi, Ludacris and Bone, Thugs n Harmony. It wasn’t until he moved to California later that year that he took the next step his evolution. He decided it was time to part ways with Chief Peace and welcome Kid Lennon to the limelight. “I think I was kind of boxing myself in with the Chief Peace name. I think when you see featuring Chief Peace, or by Chief Peace, you automatically assume what it will be about or what it should be about,” he said. “With Kid Lennon, it leaves a little more in the air of, like, there’s more to speak on. I feel more emotions than just peace. I need to be able to speak on more emotions. Peace comes from a dark place. You have to be an angry person to want peace so bad. I was such a sad, angry kid that I wanted peace so badly. And that’s where Kid Lennon comes from. That’s the kid who was like mad but still wants peace.” Last summer, Kid Lennon signed on to do a TV show with Red Bull Music. It came out this spring. Yet, while rapping is his Kid Lennon’s passion, it’s his ability to paint that still pays the bills. He was back in Oklahoma City this month painting several murals around the city. And with California on lockdown due to the spread of COVID-19, it allowed him to stay longer than he expected and painting more than he wanted. Kid Lennon is looking forward to the day when he can put down his paintbrushes and work exclusively with a microphone and his lyrics. He says that moment is closer than what many might think. “I’m too close. The show with Red Bull just aired. My album’s ready. I have meetings with labels that I’m supposed to have,” Kid Lennon said. “I finally have the momentum I need and the connections I need in California. Now it’s just about sitting and executing for a good six months. This is the plan. This is what we want. But I’m never in a rush. If I needed to be a gimmick at any point I could blow up. That’s not what I want. I’d rather have longevity.”

3 Suggestions

Pediatric cannabis therapy
Hello all! As the weather warms up, I am excited to see more of our cannabis community. I’ve thought a lot about the canna-events on the horizon, the cannabis policies on the ballot, and I feel like we have so much work to do. On top of this, we’re coming off of a quarantine. I feel like Will Ferrell, not knowing what to do with my hands. Anyone else? So I return to my roots, remembering the basics, remembering where I started and where I am now. I remember that my calling is to help spread the word that every human has an endocannabinoid system, and that you don’t have to be a scientist to utilize cannabis therapeutically. If you are a cannabis caregiver, or are considering becoming one, here are my 3 suggestions for getting off on the right foot. Get education: As a caregiver, you can find education from a lot of places... but please know this: your success as a cannabis caregiver is worth the time and resources it takes to invest in yourself. Feel free to reach out to me. As an educator I will always try to point you toward free resources before suggesting a paid resource. Why? Because the human body doesn’t care if you have money. I have been in need of cannabis therapy when money was hard to come by, and no one should have to suffer just because money is tight. Likewise, if you want or need the resources from a paid course that you cannot afford, reach out to our cannabis community to see who offers discounts, scholarships or contests for free courses. Find or create a treatment plan: You can find templates for therapy plans that vary by health conditions and weight groups, but those are just the basics. In fact, nothing compares to your first hand experience with trial and error... I see this time and time again with my clients. Be prepared to change the plan as needed, but don’t feel pressure to get it perfect right away. The sooner you begin their therapy, the better. Start low and slow, and go from there. Join Facebook groups, read what works for the health condition you’re treating. Find things that work for your unique patient. This isn’t one size fits all; cannabis therapy does not have to have dosing drama. There are templates out there for tracking your daily dosing, strains and methods, etc, or even doing 7-day-overviews. You can make your own as you go along. This process works for the minimalists and the maximalists. The patient and their part: It’s my personal belief that everyone who consumes Cannabis medicine has the responsibility, and opportunity, to be involved in their treatment plan. As someone who mostly works with children, it may surprise you that I apply this to children as well. Whether it’s helping you track their results with words or pictures, or sampling products so you can buy or make medicine they like, or helping you water the plants you grow at home. Being involved in ones cannabis therapy helps the medicine work, otherwise you (as the caregiver) may struggle to maximize the patient’s results. How can we create a successful therapy plan for someone without communicating with them? And because I know some of you may be helping to care for someone who is nonverbal/ preverbal, I want to assure you that even without words I’ve watched two of my children become very involved in their therapy plans and THAT is what changed their lives.
HORROR & CANNABIS by Rayne Graham Meet Hancock, he is the creative mind and talent behind this month’s front cover artwork. I had the opportunity to sit and chat with him for a minute about what he does and his passion for it all. After our talk, I can say with confidence that he has a unique style all his own as well as a passion for not only creating his art but for also being able to reach members of the cannabis community through his pieces. When he was a child, Hancock convinced himself that he could do one of two things in life to gain the attention he wanted so badly. The first, was to pick up a pencil and paper and start drawing. The second, was to pick up a pick and start strumming some amazing solos on a guitar. Well, we obviously know which one of those things he picked up but if you ask him, he will tell you, “I am happy I stuck with art.” He would also watch hours and hours of Ren and Stimpy just so he could pause the show, grab a pencil and paper, and practice his hand at sketching his favorite cartoon characters. At 17, you would have been able to find Hancock at frontier city, Six Flags Over Texas, or Hurricane Harbor drawing caricatures and spray-painting body art. While he was doing this, he had the chance to gain a close friendship with his managers Dave Curd and Eric Sandhop who also happen to be video game creators. Thus, the process of learning digital art took form and he has created it into what we now enjoy seeing today through his pieces. From that point, his art career took off with a jolt! You can find his art on an animated Ozarka commercial, the back of a cool fantasy novel, on social media for different clients, and doing shows for local charity events. Infact he even stated, “Most of the shows I do always go to some sort of Charity to give back to the community.” Before SQ788 passed, Hancock stuck to the art of Horror, let me tell you for this Halloween girl, that was music to my ears! But when 788 passed, he decided to mix his love for horror and cannabis all into a unique category of its own. Even though he has a passion for character art, he is quick to tell you with a smile and laugh, “I stay away from kid stuff, my stuff is more for childish adults.” His other focus is making is art look like it was drawn with a paper and pencil even though he is creating it all digitally. He wanted to do what was better for the environment and using paper, pencils, and paint were not the right roads to get there. Check out some of his work on this page once you are done imprinting the art from the cover into your creative brain. Then, head over to his Instagram page @Hancockcartoons and dive deeper into the realm of Horror Cannabis Art and be sure to let Hancock know what you think!

One of the most amazing aspects of the cannabis Sativa plant is its botany classification of non-toxic. By definition, non-toxic is considered non-poisonous and harmless to the human body. Does this mean a person can over-consume cannabis without a negative experience? No, it does not. Although cannabis is classified as non-toxic, when it is consumed in large quantities or high percentages of THC, a person may experience overstimulation of the endocannabinoid system resulting in a negative medicated experience, or “over-green” if you will. The most effective way to prevent an “over-green” episode is to know your dosage! Dosing differs from person to person and ailment to ailment. When medicating with cannabis it is important to begin your journey at a very low dosage (1-5mg THC) and to always listen to your body when medicating. Understanding each consumption method and its benefits is also important in preventing “over-greening” and establishing homeostasis within the body. I will briefly describe each consumption method and provide my personal recommendation. • Smoking is the most common consumption method and for good reason, it works really, really fast! When cannabis is consumed through inhalation it activates and stimulates the endocannabinoid system within eight seconds! ......I recommend this consumption method for clients who suffer from anxiety, migraines, pain, addiction, asthma, insomnia, inflammation, and any other ailment that requires relief within eight seconds. • Edibles are a wonderful resource for micro-dosing throughout the day, and when prepared properly can host a plethora of additional health benefits. Healthy edible options include foods that contain little to no sugar, gluten, high fructose corn syrup, or other processed ingredients. Choosing edibles without these ingredients assist in the prevention of additional inflammation throughout the body and continues to supports the immune system on a cellular level. Whole hemp flower is another easy way to incorporate cannabis into any meal and is jam-packed with all omega fatty acids, magnesium, iron, folate, and protein! ......I recommend all of my clients make their own edibles with a medicated olive oil, cannabutter, or medicated coconut oil and consume cannabis daily. Micro-dosing through a daily cooking routine is easy to accomplish and supports a continuous homeostasis status within the body. • Topicals are another fabulous option for every person! While we understand cannabis’s medicinal properties for skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and arthritis, it is also beneficial to use daily to maintain healthy skin balance and protection. ......I recommend using a daily cannabis product on your face to slow the aging process, prevent acne, reduce redness, clean pores, and maintain healthy skin. A daily lotion with low cannabidiol content is wonderful for maintaining healthy moisturized skin all over the body.

• Sublingual cannabis consumption is the method of ingesting cannabis orally and under the tongue. The best product for this type of consumption method is a tincture. ......I recommend this type of product to all my clients seeking any type of wellness. A daily tincture assists the body in establishing homeostasis throughout your endocannabinoid system including Amy Lee photo by Angela Brewster, Special Pixels but not limited to balancing glucose levels, hormones, blood pressure, thyroid function, inflammation, pain, ADD / ADHD symptoms, and more! • Suppositories are a best friend! These little rockets of wellness can provide relief from pain within 30 minutes and last for over 6 hours! ......I recommend these for chronic pain, arthritis, menstrual pain, endometriosis, PCOS, hemorrhoids, cancer patients, fibromyalgia, restless leg syndrome, & more. Layering cannabis consumption methods is the act of intentionally utilizing all of cannabis’ medicinal benefits through multiple consumption methods. When seeking optimal wellness and homeostasis layering is truly your best friend. Dosing low and slow throughout the day creates a balance between healthy and high.

Kimberlee Green Patient Profile by Rayne Graham
Once a child on the Autism spectrum reaches a certain age, their pediatrician will essentially ask the child’s parents what they want to try when it comes to long term treatment options. With every option comes a list of side effects and regressive research behind them. This can be a very scary scenario for a parent. Kimberlee Green, our July patient profile, didn’t want that for her child and wants to help other parents who feel the same way by lending her voice to the cause. Kimberlee and her husband took a leap of faith when they started researching medical marijuana treatments for their son Lincoln, but it was a jump they are both grateful for taking. Fortunately, when they brought the notion that they wanted to start a more natural treatment for their sons Autism, his pediatrician wasn’t against it at all. Pick up your jaw off the floor from disbelief because I had to do the same. The doctor simply stated that they needed to research it, track it, and update her regularly on Lincoln’s progress. Their luck with family and friends were more on the skeptic side however, but Kimberlee admits she was too before she became a medical marijuana patient herself. Growing up, she was sheltered from cannabis and didn’t try it until she became a patient herself. “You don’t realize that as a parent of any child with any medical condition, it is your right and choice on how you want to medicate them whether it is pharmaceutically or naturally.” Let me tell you all, when Kimberlee made that statement, you would really feel the conviction in her voice. Too often are parents bullied by medical professionals or the people around them to make medical decisions and it’s a good thing to be reminded that isn’t the case at all! When Kimberlee became an SQ788 patient, she took her time and researched what worked for her and what didn’t. She has a terpene sensitivity and through journaling and educating herself she was able to find the right health regimen for her body. When she got that down and felt how well it helped with issues, she was having, her and her husband realized they needed to start researching this for their son. That is when she went down the rabbit hole of green information to find what is good for the treatment of Autism. The problem? There just isn’t enough education and information out there yet because people are mostly refusing to talk about their experiences. “There are too many stigmas out there when it comes to being a parent and we don’t need to add another one, I am sick of it!” So, after all the research it was time for Lincoln to start on his medical journey. On February 19th, the day he became an official medical marijuana patient, he took his first dose of a CBD/THC mix. The next day was made of things parents dreams are made of: “I had a little boy sitting on my lap, who is completely nonverbal, giving me kisses and you could tell he wanted to talk to me. Now, he can officially say I love you mom.” His parents weren’t the only ones seeing his progress though, his therapist of two years wanted to know who this new child was by the end of February and what they had been trying. Kimberlee wants everyone to know that this is not a magic medicine that automatically fixes everything. However, seeing the light in her son’s eyes and being able to have a true connection with him has been amazing so she just cannot keep quiet about it anymore! Infact, she stated she, “Wanted to scream and shout it from the rooftops.” She wants other parents to be able to receive the information from her experience and open their minds up to do more research into medical Cannabis. We all know this to be true, there just is not enough education out there and to get over that huddle we must be able to pull ourselves out of our comfort zones and talk about our experiences with this amazing plant. Both Kimberlee and her husband are pioneers in Oklahoma when it comes to advocating and learning more about what they can medically do naturally for their child. So much so that in the coming months they will be facing yet another battle on this long road, Lincoln going to school. “We are going to have to advocate for our child within the school system so he can medicate the same way he has been every day at home. No matter what, it is a movement so keep advocating and do not give up!”.

Ego Privilege The ego is a false sense of self based on mental concepts. It is identification with the body and mind- identification with form, which primarily means thought forms.
-Eckhart Tolle
The Black Lives Matter Movement is creating much needed, cried, and begged for racial injustice reform across the country and even the world. However, as anyone who is supportive of this movement would agree, there is so much more work that needs to be done. I wanted to be able to lend my voice to at least some portion of this very large injustice, therefore I want to discuss the inner healing that needs to be done from none-other than our own personal egos. To be clear...I mean everyone who has not had to be fearful of their life, home, family, job, and wellbeing solely based off the color of their skin but judge others for it or stay silent on the issue all together. This is a systemic racisism issue. However, racism itself is not just skin deep. It seems contradicting doesn’t it? When we judge someone based off the color of their skin it is an internal dialogue that happens within us that solidifies our dependency on our deep-rooted belief systems. No matter what obscenities you scream in the face of someone who is racist and trying to control their narrative, it will only make them stand more firm within their own negative beliefs. I would say without a doubt it is the ego. Lets discuss how ego is different from self-respect. When we say some one has self-respect...we are stating that they respect themselves, respect others, and respect equality. Ego, on the other hand, demands to please one’s own superiority feeling. For example, ego makes you look down on others while self-respect works two-fold...it saves you from the impact when others look down on you which in turn makes you treat others equally. So where does this superiority feeling come from that has so many ego’s inflated in current times? Privilege, white privilege to be exact. For example, if someone doesn’t have to worry about being followed around a store to make sure they are not stealing anything based solely on how they look, that same person is going to turn their nose down at whoever does get followed around by the store staff. They will inherently think that their differences make them better and when this happens over and over in different circumstances with the same outcomes, the ego starts to grow larger and larger. This makes it impossible to tell anyone they have privilege when they are in this state because to them it’s their birth given right. The question is at this point...how do we change this narrative? Of course, there are more things that need to be done than I can ever write on this one page, but I would like to offer ways to help those who need to work on their egos. This will raise your vibration and energy which in turn will help the collective. It is time to discard superficial feelings of superiority, it is time to start letting go of the ego and embracing the true self. By doing this, we can then embrace the true self of those around us and see each difference as a unique marker of beauty instead of something to be punished for. Here are a few tips on overcoming your ego:

WHAT’S UP WITH THE GRANDFATHER CLAUSE IN THE UNITY ACT?
by Sarah Lee Gossett Parrish
Sarah Lee Gossett Parrish
National Law Journal 2019 Cannabis Trailblazer
Oklahoma House Bill 2612, known as the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana and Patient Protection Act, became effective on August 26, 2019. Now, with a significant number of commercial business licenses coming up for renewal since that effective date, UNITY’s “grandfather clause” on Oklahoma residency requirements is causing anxiety and confusion. You have likely heard about this clause, and you may wonder what it is all about. Misinformation abounds. What Is UNITY’S Grandfather Clause? UNITY provides, essentially, that owners of commercial business licenses granted by OMMA prior to UNITY’s “enactment” date will be grandfathered in under the original, SQ 788 residency guidelines, and that UNITY’s more stringent residency requirements will be inapplicable to those licensee owners. What are UNITY’s more stringent requirements? License applicants must now provide proof of Oklahoma residency for at least 2 years immediately preceding the date of application, or 5 years of continuous Oklahoma residency during the preceding 25 years immediately preceding application date. Oklahoma Attorney General Mike Hunter wrote an AG’s opinion construing this language—as courts have done—to mean the date on which the law (UNITY) was passed by the Legislature, March 15, 2019, as opposed to UNITY’s effective date of August 30, 2019. I expected this opinion because it is consistent with the statutory definitions of “effective date” and “enactment date”, and the language in UNITY references the enactment date. However, and I have mounted this argument to OMMA’s legal and compliance staff, AG Hunter’s construction results in much confusion and gives rise, in my opinion, to constitutional issues if enforced because hundreds, if not thousands, of licensees who suddenly become unable to qualify as Oklahoma residents and obtain their renewals, as they would not meet UNITY’s new residency requirements. Had Governor Stitt not vetoed HB 3228, this unacceptable result would have been remedied, as that HB 3228 provided that everyone with an OMMA license on August 30, 2019 UNITY’s effective date), would be grandfathered in as to the pre-UNITY residency requirements. But Governor Stitt vetoed it. I believe officials are working on an acceptable and fair resolution and I am confident they will accomplish their goal. A lawsuit challenging this has also been filed. In the interim, OMMA is holding renewals for licensees who fall within this catch—those with original licenses granted after UNITY’s enactment date of March 15, 2019, but before UNITY’s effective date of August 320, 2019—in a perpetual “pending” status until the issue is resolved. All of these licensees whose renewals are in the perpetual “pending” status can continue to legally operate under their original licenses. This is great news. What’s the take-away? Stay tuned.

On June 26th at the 2 year anniversary of the passage of SQ788, a new trade organization and patients rights organization will be launched. We have the most unique situation in the country here in Oklahoma with our medical marijauna law. We have been fortunate that things have “gone our way..” as an industry. We have been blessed with some willing lawmakers who respect the way we have done this and have supported the will of the majority of Oklahomans. That being said, we cannot expect this “perfect” situation to continue. We MUST organize and defend what we have. That is why Jay Wright (founder of Green Grow Expo, founder of the #okla57 patient movement), Jed Green (co-founder of New Health Solutions, co-founder of Oklahoma Cannabis Industry Association), Ron Dubin (commercial business champion, has protected the industry through numerous lawsuits, author of HB3228), Cynthia Paul, and I are joining forces to form this new organization.

We intend to do this right and will have many benefits for our members. Discounts for patients, tools for businesses, compliance audits (friendly!), website discussions, networking events, and a very organized and focused lobby effort are all in store. The founders of the organization along with many volunteers have been working behind the scenes for months to build this organization and provide value to it. We have the blessing of the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Authority. This organization will be how the industry begins to “talk” and “interact” with other trade organizations. How do we increase the number of banks banking marijuana businesses? By forming relationships with the Oklahoma Banking Association for a start. #itstime we grew up as an industry. OK4UApproved hopes to be a beacon to guide us on that journey. You can learn more at www. 19 ok4uapproved.com

BLOSSOM CANNA
by Rayne Graham
Brian and Amber Hellum, the owners of Higher Health Medical Marijuana Dispensary and H&H processing, have really hit the Oklahoma Cannabis market by storm simply by sticking to their slogan, “Education before Medication.”. With products like Orion tablets and Blossom Canna Capsules, you will quickly come to have the same notion and me I am sure of it! Of course, if you have been following a few of our past issues, you will have noticed I have written about the journey into mushrooms. Although those articles largely focused on trippy shrooms, mushrooms in general are a great nutrient source. That is why for the sake of this article, we are going to be discussing the magically beneficial Blossom Canna Capsules. There is something to be said about processors that know their stuff when it comes to what is healthy for medical patience and exactly what process will get them there. That being said, H&H Processing is one of those genuine ones. You don’t have to take my word for it, here is their process from the horse’s mouth. “Here on Monkey Island at H&H Processing we produce the Full Extract Cannabis Oil (FECO) that is the active ingredient in Orion Cannabis Tablets and Blossom Canna Capsules. We extract all the cannabinoids, THC, CBD, CBG, and terpenes for a full-spectrum product. This gives our patients the maximum plant benefit. We have found that a full-spectrum medication will work better than a straight THC medication. Your body is designed to receive cannabinoids with its endo-cannabinoid system. When you have a cannabinoid deficiency your body can reflect it with various symptoms. It could be that your pain, stress, inflammation, anxiety, insomnia and more are caused by a cannabinoid deficiency.” It is important to mention that neither of the two above mentioned products are available anywhere else besides right here in good old Oklahoma. To be specific, nowhere other than their lab! It sure makes the members of the local cannabis community swell with pride knowing the genuine effort being made for the patients of Oklahoma. So, what makes these blossom capsules so special? The short answer is that they are an excellent way to medicate with nootropics, which are substances that enhance cognition and memory. I mean, hello, mushrooms are delicious. They also improve memory, decrease blood pressure, improve blood sugar, decrease cholesterol, fight diabetes, along with a host of other medical benefits. The capsules are available in 1mg, 5mg, 25mg, and 50mg of THC. In the capsule there is also one mushroom type. The current selections include Cordyceps, Lion’s Head’s Mane, Turkey Tail, or Reishi. Of course, there are more offerings in the works that will be available soon to include a blend of mushrooms as well as other natural plants to create an all-inclusive plantbased medicine experience. Another plus is that the Blossom Canna Capsules are sugar-free, vegan, gluten-free, and allergen-free. These are all especially important for patients who can’t have. a lot of sugar or fat intake due to their condition. If that doesn’t make you want to swallow on of these down, I am not sure what will! Actually, I am sure what will, how about hearing from Hallum exactly why he has such a passion for this industry and what they do on Monkey Island? “Anyone who takes opioids needs to look at cannabis as an alternative,” said Hallum. “Opioids destroy your body. Cannabis does not. You DO NOT have to get high to receive the medical benefits of cannabis. It’s a simple choice. Let us help improve your health and your immunity, which will improve your quality of life. We promise to be friendly, helpful and informative. We look forward to helping you.” Visit Higher Health Medical Marijuana Dispensary. Besides residents, they have customers coming from Arkansas, Missouri, Tulsa and Oklahoma City so you will be in good company! The dispensary is open seven days a week from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. They offer discounts for veterans and have information on how one gets their Medical Marijuana card. One can also go to their website: www.higherhealthoklahoma.com, which has a link to where customers can put in an order, let them know when you will be by for pickup and your order will be ready. Of course, Blossom Canna Capsules are available in dispensaries in other locations as well which you can view on their social media channels or website. So, what are you waiting for? Let’s take a trip and ridePAGE this mushroom wave on Monkey Island! 27
The LocLady by Michael Kinney
At the age of 12, Brandi Danielle Cox’s father taught her a valuable lesson. At that point, she had been styling hair for half her life but had just been doing it for fun. It was something she just loved doing. However, when Cox’s father saw how much time she was spending working on other people’s hair, he imparted one of those life-changing moments that are normally only seen during a family sitcom in the 1990s. “I was already doing everybody’s hair at recess and then after school and some kids would come to my house. I was braiding everybody’s hair on the front steps,” Cox said. “And (my father) was like, ‘You owe me some money for that.’ So my father first made me pay him $5, seriously, when I was 12 years old. So my father turned it into a business.” Up until that point, styling hair was just a fun hobby for the young Cox. But once her father started charging her rent, the entrepreneurial side suddenly kicked in. “I was doing it for fun,” Cox said. “And then he made me understand and realize that there were people paying for it. And so he was right. So I started charging just a meager $10 for some braids at 12 years old. And I had to give my dad $5.” That business lesson has stayed with Cox. The 35-year old, third-generation Langston University graduate has her own salon, B.U. Locs & Styles in Del City. Instead of young middle school classmates to work on, she has a clientele list of around 160 women and men who regularly come to her for braids and other hairstyles and hair care. “I did hair in my parent’s home up until I graduated high school,” said the Oklahoma City native. “I worked my way up until I was charging about $45 at my parents’ house, still doing braids and things like that. But then I started going to school for it. So then I got the knowledge base behind it, working in a couple of salons and things like that. But yeah, my dad started me off for the business. After that, I haven’t turned back. I knew it was a business now.” While Cox knows it’s a business, she says that’s not what keeps her doors open and or her clients dedicated. She says it takes more than business sense to work 12 to 14 hours a day, seeing at least 50 customers a week. “People know I care and people know that I’ve worked hard to brand my look and my business,” Cox said. “So it’s something that is a passion of mine. I think people see love, they see the care. So you would rather have somebody that you know loves something that they do versus somebody just doing it for a paycheck. I mean, the money is good. Don’t get me wrong, but I really love what I do. And I think that’s what makes me stand out. People know I love it.” As someone who owns her own business, Cox says she would tell any up and coming entrepreneur that they better have a passion for what they do or it will eat them up. “Please love what you’re doing or you’re going to burn yourself out. You’re never going to continue it because it’s hard work,” Cox said. “It’s hard work working for yourself. It’s hard work. You have to do everything. You’ve got to be the mean person. You’ve got to be the nice person. You got to be payroll, HR (Human Resources). I mean, it’s a lot of work. And if you don’t have the love in it, you’ll burn yourself out faster than anybody on any regular job. That’s in anything. It’s better for you to love what you do out there.” However, when Cox first got the itch to start styling hair, it had nothing to do with love. It was more about self-preservation. Like many young girls, it was her mother who initially worked on her head growing up. She came to dread those hours. “It hurt,” Cox said. “I understand that about a lot of children and the trauma that is associated with getting their hair done as children. And I went through the same thing. I was traumatized by it. I didn’t want to, I feared it. I didn’t want to get my hair done. She did a good job. It just was painful. And now that I do other children’s hair I see the same trauma in them as well, but that was lack of knowledge. My mother didn’t necessarily have the patience as a professional would with hair. So a lot of different factors played into why she wasn’t the best at hair.” Currently, Cox runs B.U. Locs & Styles out an office building (3945 SE 15th St.) in Del City. That means, just like when she was a kid, she is paying rent to someone else. But recently Cox had to shut down her salon for 31 days due to the city and state regulations regarding COVID-19. She said during that time away, it made her realize just how much she isn’t in total control of her own business. “My initial dream is an in-home salon, so I could have one overhead and truly run my business how I want,” Cox said. “If I was in my home, it would have been up to me and my own discretion if I chose to take clients in. I probably wouldn’t have, but it still would have been up to me. And I would still essentially be my own boss. I’m not my own boss now. So the overall goal and the push is to be my overall boss and paying myself in every way possible. So yeah, Corona just opened my eyes, really. It opened my eyes to the fact that I do run a business, but my business is still heavily dependent upon somebody else. So it made me just reaffirm my goals.” “I’m in the process of looking and building and finding my builder because I think 2021 is my year,” Cox said. “I would like to do it before 2020 is over and take advantage of the real estate and the market right now. But I’m not going to rush it, so I just do it when it’s time, but I’m actively looking right now. I don’t like making moves in haste, so I’m just taking my time.” During her growth as a stylist, Cox has learned more afraid of success than they are of failure. That was her for a long time. But now Cox knows her potential and knows what she is worth and doesn’t have plans to let fear get in her way. “I think the big push now in entrepreneurship is freedom. So with an understanding of freedom, though, you have to understand with freedom, you have to love yourself and anything that you do to truly find where you’re free, where you fit,” Cox said. “So with loving everything that you do, and then also loving yourself so that you can maximize and understand your full potential. A lot of us don’t understand our full potential, so we want to be entrepreneurs, but that’s like me, I want to be an entrepreneur, but now I’m at the point where I’m too big. I have, it’s too big. I need a protege. I need to expand. So a lot of times we’ll stop just here. I can’t stop here. The demand, for me, is growing.”
