Asma Whitekiller

Women in the industry by Kayla Johnson

One of the most obvious and most important benefits of being able to use cannabis as medicine is the fact that it’s an all-natural choice. It’s not something we created in a laboratory, it’s been right under our noses, waiting for us to realize that there’s a better option than compounded chemicals that often have severe and lasting side effects. With medical legalization comes the opening of doors that have been shut for decades, and new opportunity goes hand in hand with the rising number of cannabis patients and business owners who are truly focused on all natural products that are not only good for themselves and their loved ones, but also good for the environment. For Asma Whitekiller, the new opportunities are life-changing, not only for herself, but for the patients who use the products from her company, Simply Bare, LLC. Born in Kuwait to Palestinian parents, her family moved to the United States when she was nine, living in San Diego and parts of Michigan for a time as well before attending college at Northeastern State University. “I studied business management and public relations at NSU, and I met my husband while here in Oklahoma.” Whitekiller said that her husband, who served in the Army as a Calvary Scout, was sent to Korea, and she was able to join him for his two year tour. “Before we left, I was pregnant, and my skin was breaking out horribly. I started making my own skincare products to help my legs. Once we were there, he was in the field quite often, and I became pretty passionate about studying plants.” One of the first things she experimented with making while in Korea was the sugar scrub that her company still uses today, used for stretch marks and breakouts, and when she expanded her work to include a body butter, one of her friends suggested that she sell it. “I argued that it was just something I had made for my sensitive skin, but she really pushed me to launch it with a spa party.” Whitekiller invited a group of military spouses over, and the group

discussed plant based skin care. The response to her products was extremely positive, and she even began to ship it back stateside. As any military family knows, duty stations aren’t forever, and when their family was sent to Georgia, she continued her work there. “At the time, quite a few of my clients were my husband’s work buddies, military guys who needed something for their knees, or bug bites, or even shaving cream.” When their time in the military came to an end, they returned to Oklahoma, and when both she and her husband began working in the car business, she ended up dissolving the company. “I was a service advisor pushing 50 to sixty hours a week, and constantly driving. I tried to get out of the business once, but starting up a company again, but it didn’t pan out, and I remained in the car industry for the time being.” However, last year, Whitekiller sent one of her parts employees home with some of her chapstick for his baby, who had severely dry and bleeding lips. His wife sent Whitekiller photos the next morning that showed the lips healed and moisturized, and upon showing it to her husband, she was met with a single phrase of encouragement: “Woman, make your dang chapstick again.” That push was timed perfectly to line up with the major push for the vote in favor of 788. “Next thing you know, Oklahomans started a ruckus and demanded plant based medicine. They voted, it’s legal, and I tapped back in. I redid all of my recipes and included cannabinoids, and so far, it’s been a mind-blowing experience.” With the opportunity before her and support behind her, Whitekiller opened Simply Bare LLC. with a line of all natural, plant based products, from her Soláce skin cell remedy and coffee sugar scrub to daily healing butters and lip balms. Focusing on providing natural skin and healthcare that benefits not only patients but the environment continues to be one of her main goals. 4

“If I can get a million people to use food as skin care, I feel like we can create a ripple to offset the chemicals going into our water systems on the daily. Instead of washing down chemicals and microplastics, you’re washing down sugars, salts, plant oils like lavender and marjoram.” In addition to being much less damaging to the environment, the use of plant-based products for skincare and health needs has shown some incredible results. “The Soláce butter has been getting some incredible feedback, with people using it for sunburns, psoriasis, poison ivy, even for babies with eczema or other skin condition flare-ups. I really can’t wait to see what the next level of development can bring once we add THC to the full line.” Whitekiller credits not only her spouse with supporting her endeavors, but her family as well. “My in-laws and my parents are all standing with me in this journey, even if part of my extended family is not pro-cannabis.” In addition to the encouragement from family and friends, Whitekiller praised the industry and patients of Oklahoma. “This whole industry has been welcoming and so loving. My favorite part of what I do, hands down, is the hugs I get each week from the new friends, clients, and businesses I meet. The cannabis industry has been a huge blessing, my skin care line goes hand in hand with it, because it’s all based on plant based healing.” In addition to being a business owner, Whitekiller is herself a patient, and knows firsthand the benefits cannabis can bring. “I have PTSD and anxiety. Cannabis is the key for me, because I’m constantly running on high anxiety.” mation about plant-based products and changing Despite that battle with anxiety, Whitekiller’s ad- lives. vice for anyone wanting to jump into the cannabis industry is simple: “Just jump. You can’t be afraid To any woman, man, kid or parent and you can’t wait until you’re ready. I took a huge leap of faith to walk away from the car industry to wanting to get into this industry, just rebuild my company, a lot of people said I couldn’t be yourself and go for it.” do it, and here I am, in 38 locations, sharing infor5

Google Says No to GREEN

Sad news for the online cannabis community! Apps that connect each of us to Marijuana products are banned from the Google Play Store. This announcement came from the company on July 3rd via an updated policy section. The updated policy sections states that Google Play doesn’t “allow apps that facilitate the sale of marijuana or marijuana products, regardless of legality.” Previously the page didn’t include any specific mention of cannabis. Examples of common violations are: • Allowing users to order Marijuana through an in-app shopping cart feature. • Assisting users in arranging delivery or pick up of Marijuana.

• Facilitating the sale of products containing THC. Don’t cry for the loss of Weedmaps or Leafly just yet! A google spokesperson explained in an email to Marijuana Moment that these apps simply need to move the shopping cart flow outside of the app itself to be complaint with the new policy. The announcement from Google wasn’t all Cannabis related however, another addition to the policy stipulates that apps “that facilitate the sale of tobacco (including e-cigarettes)” are prohibited. If an app helps consumers purchase alcohol they are in the clear, but not if it “encourages the irresponsible use of alcohol or tobacco.”

You’re Doing Fine Oklahoma!

More than 3.5% of the Sooner States population has been enrolled as patients with the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Authority (OMMA). We just celebrated our one-year cannaversary of sq788’s passing, and the applications are showing no signs of slowing down any time soon. In fact, the Tulsa World reported that Oklahoma’s participation rate places it among the top of the 33 states that have some form of cannabis legislation.

For example, as of the middle of last month OMMA had approved 3,211 grower, 1,547 dispensary, and 859 processor licenses. In contrast, Arkansas has only had three dispensaries open since the approval of medical cannabis in 2016. A lot of this success is attributed to the non-competitive application process, which means the government is not deciding the number of dispensaries that are allowed to operate.

Texas Taking Baby Steps Towards Cannabis Reform with Unintended Side Effects if a substance is Marijuana or Hemp, according to Texas prosecutors. This is due to the bill changing the definition of Marijuana from certain parts of the cannabis plant to those parts that contain higher levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). This difference is undetectable by law enforcement at the moment as the crime labs say they do not have enough resources for the testing which weakens Marijuana cases where defendants could argue the substance is instead hemp.

Prosecutors across Texas are dropping hundreds of low-level Marijuana charges and have stated they will not be pursuing new ones without further testing. Of course, these actions came in wake of the new law that changed the definition of Marijuana. To be clear, this is not a decriminalization law for small amounts of Marijuana for personal use. The law actually legalized hemp and hemp-derived products such as Cannabidiol (CBD). The unintended side effect of House Bill 1325 is that is has made it difficult for law enforcement agencies to tell

BEYOND THE UNITY ACT—NOTABLE TRAILER BILLS TO OKLAHOMA’S HOUSE BILL 2612 BY: SARAH LEE GOSSETT PARRISH, CANNABIS LAWYER1

Oklahoma’s medical marijuana landscape continues to evolve after the Legislature’s passage of the Unity Act (“Unity”), effective August 26, 2019, with adoption of several trailer bills. The high points of notable trailer bills that have been passed are discussed below.

with their application to OMMA.

Senate Bill 882 Senate Bill 882, the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Waste Management Act, establishes policies for obtaining a medical marijuana waste disposal license in Oklahoma, and includes an emergency clause which exempts cannabis roots, stems, stalks, and fan leaves from the definition of “medical marijuana waste” (amending Unity) and allows for disposal of same by open burning, incineration, composting, mulching, burying or another method approved by the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality. The other parts of the marijuana plant still fall under the requirements for disposal through a third-party company. The Waste Management Act provides for the issuance of ten waste disposal licenses at a cost of $5,000 each, and contemplates the option for more licenses to be authorized after the first year, if necessary. These licensees will become the third-party companies authorized to dispose of “medical marijuana waste”. Medical marijuana waste disposal facility permits will also be issued, at a cost of five hundred dollars ($500.00) each.2 Senate Bill 162 Senate Bill 162 clarifies which physicians can sign patient recommendations for medical marijuana. It caps “test batch” samples of medical marijuana at 10 pounds each, and includes testing requirements for labs, providing that “each harvest batch or product batch, as appropriate” shall be tested for microbials; mycotoxins; residual solvents; pesticides; tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and other cannabinoid potency; terpenoid potency; and heavy metals. This Act became effective via an emergency clause on May 7, 2019. Senate Bill 1030 Senate Bill 1030, passed without an emergency clause or effective date and, therefore, effective on August 26, 2019, basically codifies Oklahoma’s medical marijuana regulatory scheme. It also adds provisions directing that the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Authority (“OMMA”) create a medical marijuana use registry of licensed patients and caregivers, and provides that this registry be accessible to licensed dispensaries (via the 24-character identifier) and any court in Oklahoma. The Act states that “all other records” of medical marijuana licensees “shall be deemed confidential” and that OMMA’s handling of same “shall comply with all relevant state and federal laws”, including HIPAA. Senate Bill 1030 also requires that applicants for an Oklahoma medical marijuana commercial business license submit a certificate of compliance with municipal ordinances and codes along

10

House Bill 2601 House Bill 2601 amends Unity to eliminate the publicly traded company exclusion from the list of those who shall not be issued a medical marijuana business license, and contains a grandfather clause stating “[a]pplicants that were issued a medical marijuana business license prior to the enactment of the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana and Patient Protection Act (Unity Act) are hereby exempt from the two-year or five-year Oklahoma residency requirement” contained in Unity and also in House Bill 2601, directly above the grandfather clause. While good news for those who currently hold OMMA commercial business licenses via arguably lenient residency requirements under S.Q. 788’s and OMMA’s Emergency Rules, it remains to be seen the extent to which OMMA will apply this exception—whether OMMA will consider the clause applicable to applicants who hold licenses as of August 26, 2019, the date Unity becomes effective, or as of the end of March 2019, the date the Legislature enacted Unity. wTechnically, “enacting date” and “effective date” have different meanings; the former being the date the Legislature officially passes a law and the Governor signs it, and the latter being the date upon which the legislation actually becomes law. Absent an emergency clause or effective date in the language of an act, it becomes effective 90 days after the legislature session is adjourned. However, given the time lapse between Unity’s enactment and its effective date, and the fact that OMMA continues to issue licenses in the interim, in my opinion a serious constitutional issue would arise, should OMMA restrictively apply the language, to prohibit license renewals for those who were licensed during this interim period and qualified for residency under S.Q. 788’s and OMMA’s Emergency Rules. House Bill 2601 also addresses inspections by OMMA; advertising rules (which are, for the most part common sense here); removes restrictions on third party vendors to provide industry services; requires OMMA to indicate that a law or regulation has been violated if OMMA revokes, denies, or suspends a license; and applies the provisions and prohibitions relative to the smoking of tobacco in any form, to the smoking or vaping of medical marijuana. The Legislature enacted additional trailer bills, including House Bill 2613, which extends patient license recommending authority to podiatrists, and vests the applicable medical boards with rulemaking and procedural authority to regulate how physicians can recommend medical marijuana. Whether this is an attempt to back-door qualifying conditions in Oklahoma remains to be seen. What’s the take-away? Stay tuned.

Diamonds are just a girl’s best friend, or are they? Anymore by Brittney Graham

When I mention diamonds, I know what first comes to mind, shiny stones placed on beautiful ring settings given for the celebration of love. Marilyn Monroe sang it loud and clear, “diamonds are a girl’s best friend!”. But today we are discussing a relatively new type of diamond that is quite similar in appearance to the stone we all love so much; we are talking about the Cannabis Diamond. First, let’s start with definitions; Tetrahydrocannabinolic Acid (THCA)The most common cannabinoid found in the raw Cannabis plant. THCA is non-intoxicating but converts into intoxicating THC when exposed to heat through a process called decarboxylation. Medicinal benefits of this cannabinoid are anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, and anti-emetic treatments. Diamonds: A term in the cannabis industry to describe crystalline structures, primarily THCA, that are developed in sauce extracts or isolated on their own. Now that we have those out of the way, when we are speaking of diamonds in a Cannabis context it is important to remember that it has a few different meanings. It is more often than not used to describe THCA crystalline, which is THCA that is isolated from refined oil. However, diamonds are also used to describe THCA crystalline that was developed in the presence of terpene rich solution, (Also known as sauce). So, when you see the crystal-like structures at the bottom of terpene sauce jars, those are THCA DIAMONDS! At this point we are all asking, what is the main difference between these types of diamonds? The answer sounds simple but is actually a lengthy process and that is the context at which they were extracted and then further processed. THCA Diamonds can be made one of two ways: by utilizing a closed-loop system with a unique solvent removal procedure, or following the same multi step process used to make pure cannabinoid crystalline.

On one hand, the same basic work flow is used for all solvent extractions (closed-loop system); A liquid solvent, like butane, is used to separate the active compounds from the trichome gland to yield a solution. Even though the solvent needs to then be removed from that solution before it is considered finished, removing the majority of solvents within the system is not done immediately. 10-15% of the solvent is left behind to create a solution that is solvent rich and slowly purging off the solvent allowing the THCA Diamonds to form. On the other hand, producing Cannabis crystalline involves mixing a highly refined Cannabis concentrate, one that has had terpenes and lipids removed, with a solvent to create a super saturated solution. The solvent is then slowly

11

evaporated using heat and pressure creating the perfect environment for THCA Diamonds. If you remember back to elementary school, this process is very similar to making rock candy in science class. At the end of these processes, no matter which one is chosen, diamond mining is the last step. The process of making THCA Diamonds and then in turn harvesting them from sauce is diamond mining. Ideally, at the end of mining there should be two separate products- pure crystalline diamonds and “terp sauce”, usually consisting of more than 50% terpenes as well as other extracted cannabinoids. Regardless, it is important to remember that whether it is presented in a jar, or packaged as a separate isolate, diamonds are always crystalline structures of pure THCA.

Many people have found themselves uncomfortable with cannabis over the years due to the effects of sativa strains being too energizing, to the point of feeling paranoia, or indica strains having a too-powerful sedation effect leading them to fall asleep or become locked to the couch. As the number of strains has slowly started to rise over the years, hybrids, have become much more commonplace, and because they offer a more mild range of effects that are balanced out, people who had once struggled with issues like paranoia or oversedation from cannabis use are now able to turn to the plant for their health needs. This month’s pick, Soul Assassin OG, is one such indica-dominant hybrid that has grown in popularity, and offers a balanced, but potent, relaxing effect, perfect at the end of a long day. An offspring of OG Kush developed by the Soul Assassins Crew, this strain is a powerhouse for those who are looking for serious stress and anxiety relief. If there was a bud that embodied how cannabis is stereotyped to look, it could be this strain. The flowers of Soul Assassin come in varying shades of olive green, from lighter and vibrant to rich and deep, with the bright orange hairs that are quite reminiscent of OG Kush. The buds are leafy and full, without being too airy and dried out, and coated in enough trichomes to give it a bit of a dank shine. Almost as distinctive as its olivey appearance is the extremely pungent aroma that comes with it. Breaking apart or grinding the bud unleashes the distinctive mix of sweet citrus and pungent

turpentine-like pine. There’s no other way to describe it: it’s loud. It’s one of those strains that you can feel a tingle in your nose the moment you open the container, and it’s an aromatic showstopper when you start breaking it up. All of that piney-lemony goodness is just as obvious when it’s smoked, and while the flavor is uplifting and bright, it’s also just a little on the sharp side. Be prepared to cough with this one if you’re unprepared for the bold flavor that comes with the otherwise smooth smoke Soul Assassin has to offer. The effects of this particular strain are undeniably uplifting at first, with many patients finding they have much greater focus because they’re so energized and at ease at once. With every hit, it leaves patients more able to put aside any negativity that’s plaguing their minds, and while it’s an energizing strain that can help boost focus, after a short time, it becomes rapidly apparent that it’s an indica-dominant strain. Intense relaxation spreads outward over the body for many patients, without being potent to the point of inducing couch-lock. It’s a great strain for relaxing in the late afternoon or evening, when you can truly relax for the day, and beyond being a great strain for anyone, it has some particular benefits for medical patients. That deep sense of relaxation tends to bring on a sense of happiness for most consumers, and that’s a potent combination for those battling depression or PTSD. It doesn’t force you to feel happy or medicated; it relaxes you so that you can

feel that way yourself. That same sedating trait is also beneficial for those suffering from chronic pain or insomnia, and for those who suffer from muscle spasms, this strain is absolutely one to try. Soul Assassin tends to bring on the munchies for consumers, and that can be life-changing for those who need to stimulate their appetite. As far as the downsides of this strain, be prepared to be thirsty. This is usually this case with just about any strain of cannabis, but with the sharpness Soul Assassin can have when smoked, you’re going to be feeling extra parched from the coughing. A few people who have lower tolerances may find that if too much is consumed, paranoia may affect them, but generally, if you start with a small amount and work your way up if needed, this can be avoided. If too much is smoked or consumed at once, since it’s so sedating after the energized effects wear off there’s a good possibility that you’ll find yourself waking up on the couch after sleeping for several hours. It’s good quality, heavy sleep, but it’s certainly something to keep in mind so you don’t overdo it. Soul Assassin is a balanced, but undeniably indica-dominant strain that, while it may take

some time to find the perfect dosage for you, has serious potential for a wide range of medical conditions and issues. It’s a powerful, fragrant strain that, despite the name, is good for the soul, and could be of particular interest for those who deal with stress and depression.

Cooking with grass by Kayla Johnson

To make the tincture, make sure you decarb your plant matter in order to activate it. The easiest way to do that is to heat an oven to 225o F, line a baking tray with parchment paper, and evenly layer the broken/roughly ground flower and stems. Heat it for approximately 50 minutes, until it’s darkened to a toasty brown without appearing burned or overcooked. Once you’ve got it good and activated, simply pour it into the jar, and add your alcohol, leaving about an inch at the top. Put the lid on your jar, put it in a dark cabinet, and walk away. Give it a shake every few days, but leave it for at least two weeks, up to a few months. Once you’ve tested it with a small drop, if you’re satisfied with the potency, strain the plant matter out, and pour the leftover liquid into little dropper bottles for easier dosing. It’s important to note that tinctures are generally very strong, so start slow when using it for gummies or in tea and coffee. To make a batch of weed-infused gummies, just gather the ingredients and follow the instructions listed below. You’ll need to have a gummy mold on hand, which you can find in some local stores, or on Amazon.

One kind of edible that’s becoming increasingly popular is the infused gummy. There are different varieties and flavors in just about every dispensary in the state, and they are one of the easiest ways to microdose throughout the day. However, if you’re looking for gummies with a higher dosage, specific flavors, or even gummies that you know are allergen-free, making them at home is incredibly easy. It’s also a great way to dip your toes into making edibles and using tinctures if you’re unfamiliar with them. The recipe we’ve selected to share today is one that’s as easy and fool-proof as possible, but as with most recipes for infused treats, there is a little bit of work you need to do in advance. A cannabis tincture is basically just a concentrated cannabis extract, usually in alcohol. Some dispensaries in the state may carry them, and if your local store does, you can skip this step and give them a try! If you would rather try your hand at making your own, it’s fairly easy, but does take time, at least two weeks up to two months or more. Generally, the longer you let it soak, the more potent your end result will be. You’ll need an ounce of flower, though if you have been saving your stems and trim, this is also the perfect opportunity to use your stash of stuff. You’ll also need a one quart jar, and high proof alcohol, preferably Everclear or something similar.

Pop them out, eat, wait, and enjoy. Store your leftover gummies in a sealed container in the fridge, and for best results, eat them within two weeks for maximum freshness.

Ingredients: 1 ½ C of 100% fresh fruit juice (pulp is fine, but make sure it’s 100% juice!) 4 tablespoons of gelatin 3 tablespoons of your tincture. 3 tablespoons of honey (only if additional sweetness is desired) Instructions: 1. Put the juice in a medium sauce pan over low-medium heat. The goal is to get the liquid warm without it boiling. Once it’s good and warm, add your tincture. 2. Slowly whisking, add the gelatin to the mix until it is thoroughly mixed into the juice and tincture combination. Keep whisking until any visible grains disappear. Taste your mixture, and add up to three tablespoons of honey as you prefer. 3. Carefully pour the mixture into the gummy molds, cover them, and let them sit in the fridge for 3-4 hours.

To break up or to grind - the cannaquestion by Kayla Johnson

It’s fairly standard practice to break your bud down that one to catch the kief as it falls off of the ground bud. before you smoke it, vape it, or decarb it for edibles. Breaking it up is rather time consuming compared to using a grinder. manually by hand also makes it extremely difficult to get As mentioned above, the best way to find what you a finer, consistently-sized grind, something that makes prefer is to simply try it out. If you’ve been using your a difference for smoking and vaping. For most, this is fingers and are wanting more even joints, maybe try usa nostalgic method (who doesn’t love the smell of dank ing a grinder, and if you don’t care about collecting kief on their hands?) but if you’re wanting to use every bit of and only smoke a little at a time, consider trying the shot your bud that you can, it may be one to skip, at least on glass trick instead. the regular. Manual grinders have become a staple for a vast portion of cannabis consumers. Single or multi-chambered, they’re often made of metal or hard plastic, with teeth on the top and bottom of the upper chamber to grind the flower. One of the main perks of using a grinder is that you can very easily achieve a fine, even grind grind, meaning your flower will smoke smoother, with more surface area you’ll have an easier time packing bowls or filling joints that will burn evenly, and your bud will go further since you’re not having to use quite as much. Grinders with more than one chamber often have one below the teeth for the flower, and then another below 15

Ten tools to improve Now that cannabis is stepping out of the shadows, the ways that we can consume it are changing as well. In the last decade alone, concentrates have exploded in popularity and availability, while edibles have become much more refined, taking the guesswork out of dosing. Even flower has become higher quality, with growers able to share information and tips more openly than ever before. As cannabis continues to change, so do the tools of the trade, and whether you have had experience with cannabis for a while or you’ve only recently given it a try for the first time, some of these tools are fairly standard, and are worth including in your own cannabis kit. 1. A grinder - This one may be up for some debate, and we’ll discuss it in this issue as well. A grinder helps break up your cannabis in a fairly uniform manner, but many people still prefer to use scissors or their hands to break up their bud. There are different types, ranging from simple one-chamber grinders, to more elaborate ones with a sepa-

rate chamber for flower, and a lower one to catch the kief. 2. Air tight container - Nobody enjoys crumbly flower that’s dry as a bone because it wasn’t stored right, or even worse, mold or mildew from too much humidity. Your bud will stay much fresher, and safe from any humidity or other issues, in an airtight container, preferably one that’s light proof. 3. Sploof - More than a few of us have rubber-banded dryer sheets over the end of a paper towel roll to mask the smell from smoking, but with options like the Smoke Buddy and other carbon sploofs available, those days are in the past. These are handy if you still prefer to keep your

choice of medication private, since the carbon filters out the smoke as you exhale through it. 4. Pipescreens - Whether you use a bong, bubbler, or spoon/hand pipe, having bits of ash and flower fly into your water or your mouth makes for a less-than-pleasant experience. For pipes using water, the plant matter can also rapidly increase bacteria growth, so it’s especially important to change your water often, but using screens, whether metal or glass, can help keep your pipe cleaner. Using a screen also makes it easier to actually smoke all of your bowl, rather than wasting some of it getting sucked into the pipe or your mouth. 5. Dab/multi tool - Whether you use a Swiss-Armyesque multitool or a simple metal poker, having some kind of tool to scrape, poke, scoop and clear is pretty invaluable. Many dabbers/ toke-tools now feature a scoop on one end, with a poker or point at the other, so they can be used for dabs, cleaning out bowls, or scooping flower. 6. Hempwick - This may not seem like a must-have, but it’s the one you should really consider adding if you smoke often. When we use traditional lighters to spark up, we may be inhaling some of the butane in addition to the smoke from the flower, which can lead to lightheadedness, increased coughing, and potentially cause other health problems over time. Hemp wick is a much healthier alternative, made of twisted hemp fibers often dipped in beeswax. It’s easy to extinguish after you’ve burned through your bowl, available at most dispensaries or head shops and has no dangerous fumes. 7. Pre-rolled cones - If you love the process of rolling joints, feel free to pass this one over. It can be tricky to learn to roll your own, and if you have health problems or issues with your hands or stability, it can feel next to impossible. Many dispensaries and smoke shops offer readyto-fill cone-shaped joints, often made of hemp or rice paper, complete with a cardboard filter in place. All you do is fill, and twist the end. These are handy to keep around for easy medicating, and can save you a lot of hassle and frustration. 8. Rolling tray - This kind of pairs with number seven, but especially applies to those who prefer to roll their own joints. Get a good rolling tray, something with edges. Whether you’re packing pre-rolled cones or rolling your own joints/blunts with your paper or wrap of choice, it’s a messy process, and a rolling tray will help you save weed, and save the clean-up time. Some larger trays even have slots for dab tools, grinders, and other common accesso16

your cannibis experience

ries to help you stay organized. 9. Glass hand pipe - Again, if you really don’t like glass pieces, feel free to ignore this tip, but a good quality hand pipe, whether it’s shaped like a Sherlock Holmes pipe, a spoon or a bubbler, is one of the best basic tools a consumer of cannabis can have. While some can be expensive, there are many extremely affordable options available, and all you really need to do is pack a bowl and light up. Keep it clean, and a glass pipe can be one of the smoothest smoking experiences you’ll have, and it’s something that’s worth trying if you haven’t considered it before. 10. Quality ashtray - This may sound self explanatory, but there are few things worse than dumping over or breaking a flimsy glass or plastic ashtray, especially onto your carpet, clothes, or furniture. It can leave a very powerful, stale odor, and it’s just unpleasant to have to clean up. If you’re smoking consistently, invest in a heavy glass ashtray, something that won’t just be knocked off the edge of the table, or break. Many new options include ones that are enclosed and help prevent spills, so look around to find what works best for your needs. 17

Patient of the month

There’s no denying that patients in Oklahoma are passionate about cannabis. Our industry has absolutely exploded in the last year, and hasn’t slowed down much yet. One thing patients seem to love as much as buying cannabis is growing it themselves, and creating new strains that have the potential to help their fellow Oklahomans. Justin Carter is one of those patients, and his passion for growing has not only led to new opportunities, but has put him in the position to help patients by creating new strains that might better suit their needs. A native of Elk City, Carter now resides in El Reno, and gives cannabis credit in assisting with his overcoming of addiction to

18

by Kayla Johnson various medications for pain and anxiety. “I have been to rehab three different times to get off of the prescription medications I was using. Having a safe and steady access has played a significant role in the downfall of my addictions.” Instead of continually popping pills with serious side effects for his health, Carter now turns to cannabis for relief from joint pain, insomnia and anxiety. “Having a medical marijuana card and being able to have access to that without the scrutiny and fear of going to jail has been a true blessing.” Like many of us, his love of the plant runs deep. “Cannabis has always been a part of my life in the past. I’ve had a love and a passion for growing and using it for sixteen years.” Initially, he began growing simply to provide himself with medicine. As the years began to pass, he realized the benefit of sharing the information he had. “I started to want to help other people, and really educate them.” Now, his love of growing has expanded into breeding

new strains of cannabis. “I feel like I have strains that could help thousands of patients, and having legal access has given me the pathway to do just that.” Legal cannabis has also opened the door to educating their loved ones. Carter and his wife, a registered nurse, chose to educate those of their seven children that are old enough to understand. “ We’re open to our families about my cannabis use. My wife doesn’t use it, but she supports it, as does the majority of our families.” The freedom to be open with family and friends is something valued by most patients, even if it took some getting used to in the beginning for Carter. “When I made my first legal purchase, it was pretty exciting, but it was also pretty scary.” Even as nerve-wracking as it might have been, it also set him free. “I think the best part about having my medical card is not only being able to grow my own medicine, but being able to walk away from opioids.” For Oklahomans who are still unsure whether or not cannabis could help them, Carter has some simple advice. “Do your research, look for the strains that would work best with the medical issues you are trying to relieve, and start small, take the proper precautions.”

Like hundreds of other patients, Carter has turned his passion for cannabis and growing it into a career. “I’ll be working for Prairie Fire Grows in Oklahoma City as their commercial grower. I’m looking forward to creating my own strains and getting medicine into the hands of the people in Oklahoma.” While not every patient wants to work in the industry as a grower, he still believes that growing medicine is something people should experience for themselves. “The best advice that I could give to a new home grower would be to keep your grow as simple as possible, and be patient. If you love your plants, that will be rewarded at harvest time, and I think it’s very important for those who can grow their own to give it a shot.” Both in the growing of the plant and in the flower itself, there’s medicine to be found for those that need it. Justin Carter is a walking, living example of the fact that this natural medicine can be the key to finally breaking the chains of opioid addiction for some patients. “Cannabis has truly saved my life, I’ve been clean off of all pills for one year now, and it’s possible because of the Oklahoma medical marijuana program.”

Pharm 788 - Trial by Flood

For a good part of Oklahoma, most of May was a pretty rough month. Whether it was straight line winds, golf ball sized hail, or the never-ending rains, it just seemed to be one thing after another. For those who lived in the eastern part of the state, particularly in the area east and southeast of Tulsa, all of that rain turned into substantial flooding that uprooted lives and caused quite a bit of damage. Some have even called it the ‘500 year flood’ for that part of the country. Homes and businesses alike were flooded or swept away as the waters continued to rise, and even as the floods receded, the damage continued in the form of severe mold and mildew, among other issues. Even if the building remained, often the inside was extremely damaged. One of those such buildings was Pharm 788, a dispensary in Roland, Oklahoma that has continued to serve the patients in their community despite the fact that their building had been flooded. Like so many of Oklahoma’s cannabis stories, it’s one of perseverance and dedication, even at the lowest points. When the dispensary opened for business on January 1st of this year, it was the dream of a group of investors that had finally come to fruition. Trish Freeman, one of those investors who helps manage the social media and public relations for the business, says that while they were nervous, it was also exciting. “Most of us, if we’re not patients ourselves, we have family members who are patients, or could benefit from cannabis as medicine.” Their group of investors has also been impacted personally by the opioid crisis like so many others across the nation, and that continues to weigh heavily. “Perhaps if there had been access to medical marijuana years

by Kayla Johnson

ago, things might have turned out differently.” After spending months planning and preparing, they finally opened their doors. “It was really, really exciting, but we were really nervous at the same time.” Like the now thousands of other cannabis dispensaries across the state, Pharm 788 did well, establishing itself comfortably in Roland and serving the patients in that area well.”It’s been really uplifting, both for me and all of my partners, to see the patients who are suffering be able to come in and get the medicine they need, especially without having to drive a long distance to get it.” As the calendar began the downward slope in May towards the end of the month, the rains started. Storm line after storm line after storm line battered essentially the entire state of Oklahoma, but much of the heaviest rain was focused in the north-central and northeastern parts of the state. Many of the lakes and rivers in Oklahoma are, unfortunately, in this area as well, and as the rain kept coming down, the water began to rise. Finally, the flood warnings reached Roland. “May 24th, we finally got the warning that the water would be rising by tomorrow morning. We didn’t have any choice at that point but to close our doors and hope for the best, our building kind of backs right up to the river, so all we could do was move our product to a safe location and wait.” At eight P.M., the doors of Pharm 788 shut, and by five A.M. on the 25th, the water was knee deep in the parking lot of the dispensary. “It was incredible, there was no water at all on the 24th, and by the morning of the 25th, it was knee deep, and just kept getting higher and higher.”

20

No one enjoys seeing their hard work destroyed, but when it’s your hard work and investment that also provides people with needed medicine that’s been destroyed, it’s an even harder pill to swallow. “Even just in the short time we were open, we had some great times in that building, and it was hard to see photos and know that it was under water, after we’d learned so much about the business and our patients there, but we also knew there were people all around us that had it way, way worse than we did, and it helped us keep some perspective.” It was June 3 by the time the water began to recede, and it was a slow process waiting for the water to finally go back down. Freeman said that the perspective they were able to keep helped spark them into action. “Once we were able to finally get in there and see the damage after the water went down, we knew that we weren’t going to be able to reopen here for several weeks, but we also had patients contacting us needing medicine.” Knowing that the people around them, many of them patients who had come into Pharm 788 before, were suffering without their medicine on top of the damage from the flooding inspired them to do something about it. One of the investors in the group came up with the idea to contact RoBoxx, a company that makes portable buildings, and with that, they were off. By June 12th, they were open in their small building after eighteen days closed, and the morale boost for the patients who needed it was noticeable for Freeman. “It felt good to be able to tell people that ‘yes, we’re open for business, come let us help you find what you need.’” The main building that houses Pharm 788 is almost finished with repairs, and the dispensary will be hosting a grand reopening on July 7, forty four days after the initial closure of their business. While they were able to continue after a time 21

in their temporary dispensary, there’s no denying the victory in reopening in the original location.”We’re still here, we’re doing well, and we survived instead of letting it sink us. That’s what matters.” Freeman credits keeping a perspective and a focus on their patients with helping the owners of Pharm 788 push through the chaos brought on by the floods. In a time where cannabis consumers are working hard to shake off the stereotypes and stigmas of past decades, Pharm 788 shows as a shining example of the determination and hard work that has come to be associated with the cannabis community.

What is Resin, Live Resin, and Rosin? by Brittney Graham There are a vast number of ways to consume medical Cannabis and to be honest it can all get a little confusing. With Shatter, wax, diamonds, resin, flower, edibles, tinctures, topicals, capsules, and bath bombs there is no wonder how one could get a tension headache from the confusion. Since the passing of SQ788, I have come to find that learning little by little how each product is processed, the chemical compounds that make up each product, and the medicinal benefits can make that confusing headache disappear! So, let’s start our educational journey into Wonderland and see what new life changing information we can dig up about Resin, Live Resin, and Rosin, shall we? Resin, also referred to as “sap”, is the term for the sticky to the touch trichomes that appear on the flowers and the sugar leaves of mature female Cannabis plants. When dried, cured, and collected these trichomes are called “kief ”. Trichomes are also responsible for the medical efficiency and the psychoactive effects of Cannabis. Cannabinoids (such as CBD and

THC) and terpenes are all contained within Resin at a higher concentration compared to flower Cannabis that is smoked. The brown or black tar that builds up in pipes and bongs is also Resin. However, regardless of the form Resin is Resin is Resin and it still contains THC. Rosin, or “Rosin Tech”, is a Cannabis concentrate in which the dried and cured flower of the plant is pressed under a combination of heat and pressure to release the THCrich Resin. It offers a safe and budget friendly alternative to expensive BHO and CO2 extraction facilities, which can cost upwards into the six-digit figures for potential processing facility owners. Not only can you purchase a $35 hair straightener and do it yourself at home, but there are no added chemicals to try and purge out of the final solution! It is important to note that the higher-grade heat press and purity flower you are using, the better the Rosin that will result. Live Resin on the other hand, is the unique form of Cannabis concentrate involving the cryogenic freezing of freshly-harvested plants.

Temperatures are kept below –292 degreed F (-180C). This is called a “full spectrum” process because it includes the whole Cannabis plant such as the flower, stalk, leaves, and branches. The best thing about live Resin in my opinion is that it preserves the terpene profile of the plant because of the flash freezing process. It is important to understand that there is a high loss of terpenes when CO2 and BHO are involved due to the heat, so preserving the terpenes by freezing right after harvest seems like the best solution. Terpenes are responsible for the odor of cannabis, which means that live resin has a much more full-bodied aroma than Resin or even Rosin. However, due to the high potency of the freezing process involved and high-tech machinery needed to do all of this; Live Resin is one of the most expensive forms of Cannabis on the market today. If you ask me, I think it is worth it to keep the terpene profile intact and I am sure once you taste the flavor and feel the medicinal benefits you just might agree.

How to keep your home smoke free If you’re reading this, chances are, you like cannabis. At the very least, you want to learn more about it. It’s a wonderful, life changing medicine, truly, and especially in edible or concentrate form, it can have a pretty nice flavor. However, as anyone who’s ever smoked it knows, it can also have a very pungent and lasting odor when smoked. Many a patient has been caught during prohibition simply because someone smelled it burning, or another day, or even on their clothes. Even though medical cannabis is legal in Oklahoma, and card-carrying patients should never be ashamed or afraid of being a patient, it can still be less than ideal for your home and wardrobe to smell of smoke and cannabis. This is especially true for the patients in the workplace, or those who have family members who are less than pro-cannabis and wish to avoid conflict from visitors. Even without other factors, it’s just generally an unpleasant scent, and one that can linger and even become more noticeable over time. Luckily, there are some easy steps that you can take to help keep your home - and the things inside it - from smelling like smoke and bud. Keep your bud in an airtight container - I know, this sounds like common sense, but usually, if your flower isn’t in an airtight jar, you can smell it as soon as you walk in the room. If you’ve got ground flower in a grinder sitting out, that’s often even stronger, so if you really need to keep your choice of medication to yourself, consider keeping the grinder inside a ziplock bag. • Stop smoking joints inside - There’s

by Kayla Johnson nothing more comfortable than sitting on your couch with a joint and your favorite show, but with the constantly smoldering blunt or joint just putting smoke off into the room, the smell is slowly seeping into your paint, the curtains, even your carpet and clothes. If you prefer them, simply step outside, or at least to your bathroom with the vent fan on. • Stop smoking inside at all - This may be hard to do, especially in Oklahoma in the summer. But bongs, pipes, anything that you combust and smoke bud with can be strong sources of that less-than-pleasant odor. Not only does the smoke they produce build up, but over time, with heavy use the pipes themselves can carry that smokey, bitter odor. If you’re a heavy smoker, consider keeping it outside, or at the very least, using a sploof and cleaning your pipes after every use. • Try vaping - While it may not have the same ritual-style relaxation for some people, vaping is an odorless, combustionless way to still enjoy flower without the smell of the smoke. There are countless options, from handheld pieces to tabletop vapes that fill up bags with goodness. • Try concentrates - From wax and shatter to diamonds and crumble, there’s no shortage of cannabis concentrates to try. Dabbing, since it does not involve combustion, is very similar to vaping in that there’s no excess odor to deal with, and some vapes work with both dry herb and concentrates. Bonus: concentrates can be pretty powerful, and pack a lot of flavor that normally, it’s hard to pick up on. It may bring you a new appreciation for the plant! 23

• Air it out - More than a few of us have probably thrown open windows in a desperate attempt to get rid of the smell in just a few minutes. While just a few minutes won’t help for consistent smokers, fresh air moving through your house for a few hours will do wonders to help flush out the stale scent of smoke, and if you have curtains, it’ll help with those as well. • Get a plant or two - And no, this one time, they can’t be of the cannabis variety. Houseplants are not only lovely to look at, but they can help filter the air in your home. There are several different types that help clean up the air, and while they may not work as well as an actual air purifier, they’re still good for you, even just to have them around. It’s extremely important to make sure you select plants that are safe for pets if you have furry friends at home, as some houseplants are extremely toxic, especially for cats. Spider plant, boston fern, bamboo, and wax plants are all varieties that are safe for your animals! • Get an air purifier - Finally, getting an air purifier is probably the most efficient way of keeping your home as smoke-scent-free as possible. There are different models available for just about any budget or room size, and they start working surprisingly quickly, enough that it’s often noticeable within a few hours. Smoking your cannabis doesn’t have to mean you have to stress about whether or not your home smells of smoke or bud. Take some steps before you light up next, or even consider trying a concentrate, and just relax, smokey-smell and worry free.
