REASONS TO BE CHEERFUL

Living in Worthing... HERE’S A SHOWCASE of just some of the recent events in Worthing. Some

RECRUITING NOW!

have become ‘don’t miss this’ events on the Worthing calendar, some are new, all are credit to the growing community of people who are coming together to make stuff happen in our town.

Tide of Light & Lions Fireworks “We thought there was a great community atmosphere, it seemed as if the whole town had come out to be part of the festival and watch the fireworks. With two young children, we declared it the official start to the run into Christmas. It’s a real celebration, one of the best events in Worthing and it gets better every year.” Lee

Full and Part Time care staff required to provide quality care and support to our clients living in their own homes.

Worthing Wormhole “We missed a similar event in Worthing earlier in the year, we’ve been to the big London events and really enjoyed the Wormhole experience and look forward to seeing it grow and become another event for us to go to locally. People love the opportunity to do something different. I absolutely loved the costumes and talking to the cosplayers.” Ali

DADIFESTO

The Ghosts of Christmas Past CHRISTMAS IS A TIME FOR HOPES AND DREAMS, but without wanting

to channel the inner, pre-change Scrooge (frightened by ghosts, the big wuss), you’re not going to get what you want. What you really, really want. You see, the ideal gifts for dads aren’t some novelty golf socks (mainly because he’s never played a round in his life), but they are intangible rewards for another year of tireless dedication to their offspring. You can’t purchase the perfect dad present in Boots.

The Big Payback – Collecting Memories Of Christmases Past Forget the big money prezzies, what dads really want for Christmas is to try to revive the ghosts of Christmas past. Not in an Ebenezer way, but to relive the Christmases of their childhood.

…Be kind, let dad stay in the car with the newspaper and the chance for a sly kip. He will love you for it… We are all implicitly aware that the 1970s & 80s were better for everything, this is a fact. Anyone disputing it will be met with a mix of intellectual derision that will take the form of some Jimmy (Chinny Reckon) Hill’ing (R.I.P) thus rendering their argument null and void.

What we really want is to do what was done to us. Namely, subtly collect tonnes of photos and home videos of our kids doing daft things.

Photograph www.photographybybond.co.uk

09/06/2017 09:17:16

These images and said videos would be stored in a safe place until the child reaches puberty and starts getting sullen. Then and only then, shall they be released into the universe to cause much hilarity and a sense of morbid embarrassment to the self-conscious teenager. This is especially useful when they bring home their first boyfriends/ girlfriends. This kind of frankly terrifying family banter has been used for years. It is a tradition I strongly believe should be upheld. This has nothing to do with the fact that I was born with a huge Ginger Afro and lived through what was at the time, laughing called the fashion of the 70s. Thus, giving my own family enough full-bloodied ‘comedy’ material to warrant 30 years of therapy.

Zen and the Art of Supermarket Shopping “The threat of having to take a stroppy toddler to the supermarket is, I believe, one of the main forms of torture used by MI5”. In fact, many of the rising stars of militant war zones have crumbled and grassed-up their entire families at the mere thought of taking your average three-year-old to Sainsbury’s to do the Christmas shop. Unfortunately for humanity, it has yet to be outlawed so continues to bring fear into the hearts of many.

So, there you have it, three simple, yet effect ideas that will have the old man happier than giving him a clear conscience, the cast of ‘Paw Patrol’ a brown sack, a pond and no witnesses. (Those that know, know...) Anyway people, that’s me done for another year. I’d like to thank you for all your kind feedback on this column over the last twelve months. Some of you seem to dig what I am doing, and that my friends, is a very nice feeling indeed. Keep It Real, Like Ian Beale.

Alongside this fun and games, we would actually like a few actual gifts. If you are stuck for ideas, here are three made of Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh.

Tune In, Pop Out Anyone regularly subjected to the music tastes of a toddler will know that the perfect change of pace for any car journey would be for it to be sound tracked by something good. One of the kindest things you can do for your old man is to allow him the chance to create his own mixtape (Remember those, kids?). Failing that, let him loose on Spotify and then congratulate him heartily on his superior taste. (He didn’t spend years perfecting his favourite bands’ logos on his pencil case in Tippex for nothing).

The Christmas in 78’ where I looked so much like a girl, I was made to play an angel.

Be kind, let dad stay in the car with the newspaper and the chance for a sly kip. He will love you for it.

(And if you want to join the TotRockinBeats crew and celebrate NYE in style, but still be home by 7.30 pm, then you know what to do.)

Be Free To Pee The option to go for a pee without the little people joining you, making eye contact, grinning and continuously trying to hit your nether regions with their grubby little paws like some weird game of Piñata. Invest in some Fort Knox level locks for the bathroom and let a man have some dignity!

An Army of 89,000 Family and Friend Carers

Finance Corner MY MORTGAGE RATE has increased what do I do? The base rate has increased for the first time in over 10 years. The key question is ‘will rates keep going up and how quickly?’ General forecasts are that interest rates will rise slowly as the economy just isn’t buoyant enough to sustain steep increases, but they will keep rising. Homeowners should consider their options.

Should I ‘Switch’ or ‘Do Nothing’? MATT SUTTON, MANAGING DIRECTOR OF EMERALD FINANCE, your local award winning financial advisers, is here to answers your financial questions. Got a query? Email on info@emeraldfinance.co.uk

Information is vital so you can decide whether to change at all. For some it may be best to stay on your current deal. Some older schemes are on a low tracker rate at 0.25% or 0.5% over the Bank of England base rate (0.5%) and generally offer great value and with these it may be worth staying

MY COMMUNITY MATTERS

put. As a general guide, if you are on a tracker rate paying 2.5% or more then it will be worth reviewing your situation. Similarly, if you have come to the end of your lender’s fixed rate deal or tracker deal and have reverted to your lender’s standard variable rate (paying anything from 2.5% to 5% plus) then it’s definitely worth reviewing your situation as there may be savings to be had. If you are tied in on a fixed rate then you will normally have to pay a penalty to move your mortgage so it may not be worth changing as it will cost more than it will save. An independent mortgage adviser will be able to show you whether this is worth doing or not.

Fixed Rate or Tracker? A tracker rate will increase as the Bank of England base rate rises in the future so carries

some risk but payments may be cheaper initially. A fixed rate will remain the same for a set period of time, normally 2 to 10 years and offers stable monthly payments for that period. It is a personal choice but if you would like to know exactly what your payments will be then you should choose a fixed rate. The interest rates available are still incredibly low so for many it will be prudent to opt for a fixed rate and lock in a low payment for the future. Everyone’s situation is different so make sure you speak to your independent financial adviser or contact Emerald Finance for a nonobligation review to make sure you are taking the best steps for your future. CARERS SUPPORT WEST SUSSEX is a

charity that helps to support more than 18,500 registered Carers across the County. A carer is anyone who cares, unpaid, for a friend or family member who due to illness, disability, a mental health problem or an addiction cannot cope without their support. Caring can be rewarding but it can also be isolating. Anyone could be a carer – an 18 year old looking after a parent with an alcohol issue, a parent looking after their disabled child, a 50 year-old man caring for his partner who has MS, or a 75 year-old woman looking after her husband who has Alzheimer’s disease. Caring can have an impact on many aspects of a carer’s life and we are here to help carers access support and information. We offer family and friend carers a number of services: Our Carer Response Line, 0300 028 8888, which is open six days a week. We run more than 60 support groups for carers Emotional Wellbeing support - Carers can access free counselling, a Carer

and acute hospitals across the County including Salvington Lodge and Worthing Hospital. Carers who are either in hospital themselves or supporting the person they care for in hospital have access to the support they need. We run a Carer Learning and Wellbeing Programme which provides carers with the opportunity to focus on something that interests them, for example, Creativity, Healthy

Relationships, Relaxation Techniques or Wills and Power of Attorney. We offer Carers access to Equipment for Independence, which provides reassurance to carers and independence for the person who is being cared for. There are more than 89,000 carers in West Sussex. We are asking everyone to ‘Think Carer’, consider neighbours, friends or employees, if they are a carer encourage them to contact one of our friendly staff on 0300 028 8888.

Anne Hardy, Carer Communications and Marketing  Manager info@carerssupport.org.uk carerssupport.org.uk

Do you care, I mean really care... WELL APPARENTLY, there are

thousands of carers in the UK. I worked as a Mencap family adviser many years ago, visiting family centres to meet young carers and parents of disabled children in their homes. I was in that role for over five years meeting hundreds of people, and it made me realise that no two situations are the same. Each case needs to be treated individually to ensure both parties’ needs are met. In these difficult times of austerity, it can be difficult to know what is out

there and how much support you can get as a carer. There is no stereotype of a carer profile. The statistics, however, tell us that the majority of carers are women, and that caring can affect your career progression and income in the long term. So carers need support and we have that locally. When I was my Mother’s carer for fifteen years I felt quite isolated at times, and frustrated, and it took me a while to get the support she

needed, before I was able to cope properly. Many of our member groups provide care, or have links with carers, and so understand what is available - but do you? Read about Carers Support West Sussex above, to find out more about them and pass on their details to anyone you know who is a carer, so they can get advice and support.

Under indulgent Lemon Drizzle (sort of cake)

Every year it’s the same, your Turkey is not the only thing that gets stuffed on Christmas day. And so your dessert is not enjoyed, left half eaten on the fridge shelf. But this year it will be different, your kids won’t say... they don’t like pudding or christmas cake with all those currants and sherry... this year the dessert will be light, will melt in your mouth and you may even want a second helping... This year you will make lemon drizzle (sort of cake) and feel ever so healthy...

INGREDIENTS 2 large lemons 5 eggs 45g Granulated Sweetener 50g Self Raising Flour

FOR DRIZZLE

15g Granulated Sweetener

METHOD

Sieve the sweetener and flour into a mixing bowl. Squeeze the juice of 1 lemon into the mix. Using a hand grater, zest both lemons and add the zest to the mix. Separate the egg yolks from the whites. Keep the whites aside, beat the yolks and add to the mixture. Whisk the egg whites until they are fluffy and form soft peaks. It is very important that you fold the whites slowly into the mixture. Add to the cake tray. Bake for 20-30 minutes on 180C until golden brown, allow to cool a little. Mix the juice of the second lemon and 15g sweetener, pour over the top of the cake and bake for another 10 mins until the top of the cake is beautifully glazed.

SHOW YOU CARE

Community Art that will Keep you Connected SHARON COLBOURNE, BLUEPRINT 22 Board Member, tells Here & Now

about her art based community project and invites local groups to get involved.

My name is Shannon Colbourne and I’m a Blueprint 22 Board Member. Last year I ran a project called ‘Reaching Out’ in which several young adults put together Christmas packages for the elderly and delivered them in the week leading up to Christmas. This year we are running a year long project called ‘Show You Care’.

The aim of this project is for young adults to deliver art sessions to 25 community groups along the coast, including Worthing. The art created at each session will be combined to create a temporary art installation called our ‘Rainbow of Kindness’. Each participant will get to express themselves creatively and be part of a wider art project bringing people together.

to encourage a more positive view towards community action. Tony Best, age 24, was at the launch of the project and summed up how everyone felt about the project, saying “Kindness is important because it shows other people you’re thinking about them and makes you feel better about yourself”. If your group would like a visit from Blueprint 22 Young Adults, please get in touch with Veronica on 07543 874922 or for more information email us at info@ blueprint22.org.uk and see facebook.com/22blueprint22 Blueprint 22 is a not-for-profit Youth Organisation working along the coastal strip from Brighton to Bognor-Regis supporting 16-25 year olds.

These activities will be youth-led and offered free to groups. Our visits will take place throughout the year and we hope to spread the message of kindness and support people in the community through fun and free activities. The aim of this project is also to bring different communities together to foster understanding and caring, with volunteer young adults spending time with a range of different groups. These art activities are suitable for all ages and abilities and are totally inclusive. The reason I have chosen to run this project is to share kindness with those who do not experience this every day, and to break down barriers between different communities as well as

2. TAKE UP A SPORT Move more - find a sport you enjoy that’ll get you moving whilst having fun. It can be free too! Try Park Run, Kids Run Free, Good Gym or join a team sport like women’s rugby. Take a look at the listings for more ideas on local sports activities.

3. EXERCISE 2-3 TIMES A WEEK This can be a workout at one of Worthing’s gyms, a bodyweight routine at home or a jog round the park. The key is finding something you enjoy, and can stick with consistently - it doesn’t need to be fancy.

LOCAL BUSINESS WARWICK STREET

Worthing’s Eclectic Quarter Warwick Street is having something of a revival, a surge of new businesses are working as a community with those who are already established. This eclectic quarter of independent shops & eateries should not be overlooked… As a relative newcomer to the area and quite curious, I wanted to check out what this labyrinth of alleyways hides. Pause and really look and you will see what has been undiscovered. I STARTED THE DAY WITH A HEALTHY SHAKE from ‘Feast’.

Known for its shop front signage, a stunning piece of graffiti art, this friendly little takeaway & caterer offers so much more than a flat white. An extensive food and drinks menu, all freshly homemade and with a host of healthy options on

board too. It’s the perfect drink while I wander along the street. Giuseppes’ Lite, the little brother of the well renowned Giuseppes’ Restaurant, offers the perfect authentic Italian café experience and is the ideal spot to people watch. You could also spend hours choosing between the cakes on offer and deciding which flavour of gelato to try. This little café is also very community spirited and along with some of the traders on Warwick Street they are participating in a Christmas event on 26 November with a live cake making show! I’ve tasted the cakes and I’ll be back for the show!

A little further down, I began a conversation with Matthew the owner of Warwick Street Kitchen, here you can spend time over a leisurely breakfast, brunch or lunch. I asked Matthew for his thoughts on the Warwick Street neighbourhood and he

24

| December 2017 | HERE & NOW

summed it up in one word, “Cosmopolitan”, which he tells me is perfect for his brand. So here you can soak up the vibe with the vast menu available and be guaranteed quality food. When you visit, ask Matthew about his many prestigious accolades for his skills in the kitchen.

vibe to Warwick Street. Independent traders bring this to a town. Is it a coincidence that most swear by local products and ALL offer first class customer service?

Street since 1994, Mark at Arena has seen the fashions come and go. Here you’ll find your wardrobe staples with names such as Tommy Hilfiger, Barbour, Timberland, Levis, Lacoste and Super Dry and an extensive footwear department and experienced customer service.

DARREN AT THE NEON SANCTUM

In the middle of the street, you’ll find a cluster of shops offering something different to their contemporaries down Montague Street. Harmony at Home is a children’s ecoboutique that offers personal service and quality. Owner Claire believes that the key to their success comes from engaging with their customers and offering them choice and quality. Knowing her suppliers (some local), means that Claire can assist in finding the perfect item for each customer. Lemon Fizz is another recent arrival on Warwick Street. A gift shop with a twist! Local products ranging from bath supplies to jewellery are made by local artists and keeping it real is an understatement. The owners

believe that by keeping prices reasonable and affordable makes people realise that quality doesn’t always have to come at a cost. Amid the cafes and clothing shops, there is Room With A View, a fine art gallery with paintings, sculpture, and glassware from a range of contemporary artists. This place has the presence of an art gallery, you are free to browse, ask questions and the curator will even take a selection of artwork to your home for you to select, with no sales pressure and no obligation to buy. If looking sharp is your thing, Arena menswear offers a fresh look at men’s fashion. My brother is regularly stocking up on t-shirts in here. A resident of Warwick

If the smell of fresh brownies wafting down Stanford Square should stop you in your tracks, you need to follow your nose to Warwick Street’s newest neighbours, The Burger and Brownie Co. The only burger restaurant in this part of town, they are proud to be using local ingredients and they cater to most dietary needs, (I loved the look of the vegan burger). This place is proving to be a hit as it can get pretty busy at meal times. Turn off the main street and you’ll find Darren West at The Neon Sanctum. This little studio/ sanctuary is based at the back of Warwick Arcade. Darren’s a local artist known internationally and tells me he’s off to exhibit at Underdog Art Gallery at London Bridge on 10 February. You’ll also find his amazing neon creations lighting up various premises closer to home, including our very own St Paul’s. The Neon Sanctum,

Room With A View and the now established Colonnade House on the corner of Warwick Street makes this a perfect area for any art lover to wander through. Working together as a community that has brought a new, exciting

Find out for yourself, visit one of the upcoming Warwick Street events. The Warwick Street Christmas Event on 26 November will light up the street with traders creating a family vibe including puppet and magic shows, samples, live shows and much more. Keeping with the Christmas theme Warwick Street Kitchen is hosting Breakfast

with Santa for the first couple of Sunday’s through December. Warwick Street is a minute’s walk from the Guildbourne car park and a stone throw from the beach.

of ‘50 Sides Of Worthing’ where we pin down some of the more eclectic faces that make up this town of ours, this month we invite you to meet Joe Bunn. Joe Bunn is the self-proclaimed Bard of Worthing and has been unchallenged since he announced this in 2015. He welcomes all comers. He has lived in Worthing on and off since the year 2001, with a brief foray to Northampton University (where he was that Town’s official Bard for a year and a day).

Joe Bunn tries to create culture wherever he goes, and is mostly successful. He has also run a large number of failed events, including SEX! (the fake club night), Gregalomania (the Greg themed gig), and most recently a storytelling night where 5 of the 7 acts cancelled.

THOMAS H GREEN’S

MUSICAL TIME MACHINE

The Worthing Workshop ’68-’71 50 YEARS AGO WORTHING WAS A VERY DIFFERENT TOWN. It had

the highest percentage of elderly people per head of any similarly sized community in England. It had a police force and local media that aggressively came down on any kind of youth culture. However, as the ‘60s turned to the ‘70s, a small coterie of hippies not only survived in Worthing but, for a brief period, even flourished. The engine at the heart of their activity was a loose collective called the Worthing Workshop.

…We went up on the Downs at Cissbury Ring all night, an ideal place to go with guitars and a small sound system...

Perhaps the key to the Workshop’s beginning was an extraordinary run of gigs put on almost every Thursday by promoter Freddy Bannister in either the Assembly Rooms or the Pier Pavilion. A who’s who of ‘60s pop played there as psychedelia blossomed and rock music was coming into being: Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd (with Syd Barrett), The Who (three times), Cream, The Kinks, The Byrds, The Jeff Beck Group, Fleetwood Mac and many more. Local teenagers who’d just left school were inspired. Following the example of the rising “arts lab” movement across the country, particularly the Brighton Combination and London’s Drury Lane Arts Lab, local liquid lighting enthusiast Jimmy Doody set up the Living Loving Workshop, which put on gigs at the Norfolk Hotel (Chapel Road, now demolished) and Findon’s Black Horse Pub. Doody moved on but his promotional unit mutated into a sprawling entity known as

Do you have any memories of music life in Worthing? We’re interested in stories and scenes from any era, from the ‘30s and ‘40s to the ‘90s and Noughties. Perhaps you have a photograph of yourself or a local band or occasion? We’d love to feature it and chat about it. the Worthing Workshop, loosely directed by driven local longhairs and counterculture enthusiasts such as John May, Ian Grant, Andy CowanMartin, Nigel Thompson and Rod Cohen.

“I just got hooked,” recalls Grant, “It became more significant than anything else I was doing, learning to become a draughtsman or a surveyor or any trade job. I was fascinated by the music and by the people I was connecting with.” The core of the group were initially based around 28 Grafton Road but then moved to a more palatial house at 30 Chesswood Road. They lived a nocturnal existence, rising every afternoon, but still managed to put on a plethora of events such as alternative poetry, street theatre, folk music, even Extra Sensory Perception sessions, utilising venues such as The Fountain pub (Slug & Lettuce, Chapel Road), the Art Annexe building that was behind The Swan pub on High Street, and spaces on Union Place. “We’d set up every Saturday on Montague Street, just where the WORTHING WORKSHOP CARNIVAL FLOAT - ELIZABETH EDWARDS, IAN GRANT, MARY BLAYDON, KEVIN BERGIN, LAIN RANN, COLIN GILDER, ROD COHEN AND OTHERS PHOTO: PETE COHEN

Odeon Cinema used to be,” recollects John May, “We’d sell underground newspapers such as Oz, IT and Friends, joss sticks, posters and so on. People would walk past saying, “That’s disgusting,” and one time a local mod came up and poured a bottle of perfume over me.” On another occasion, the Worthing Herald ran a piece headlined “POLICE GAG THE HIPPY POETRY”, featuring a photograph of May reading beatnik figurehead Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s ‘Underwear”. The report also states that a 100-strong crowd gathered, making hostile comments such as “What they need is a dose in the army”. The Worthing Workshop had its own publication, Swan, printed on a mimeograph machine at Brighton’s

Unicorn Bookshop. The mag later changed its name to Scab, reflecting how those involved felt intimidated by authoritarian pressure. Music, however, was the core of their activities. May persuaded Deep Purple to play for only £40, supported by the Spencer Davis Group, a benefit that raised loads of money for Workshop events. They put on local blues rock success story Steamhammer, they put on Hawkwind, they put on folk singer Shirley Collins. May would DJ, under the name Freaky John May, while Ian Grant had taken over the lightshow, calling himself Crystalline Foetus. The Workshop also organized trips to see bands such as the Rolling Stones and Blind Faith play Hyde Park, and to the famed Isle of Wight Festivals of 1969 and

1970, and smaller festivals such as Plumpton and Harmony Farm. The Workshop even once put on a selfwritten play in Worthing’s St John’s Ambulance headquarters, based on the Thunderclap Newman song ‘Something in the Air’. Alongside such counterculture arose a new interest in drugs, especially cannabis and LSD.

and destitution. We weren’t robbing people or doing harm so it was more than likely also to do with our antiauthority ideals. In the end we were pretty much banned from holding any more do’s and we went up on the Downs at Cissbury Ring all night, an ideal place to go with guitars and a small sound system.”

However, the level of pressure was eventually not viable. John May spent his 21st birthday in the police station, after only being stopped and strip-searched the day before. He moved to London in 1971 where he ended up writing for the underground press, working for JOHN MAY, Greenpeace and MARY BLAYDON, ROD COHEN becoming a renowned PHOTO: PETE COHEN music Journalist. Grant, meanwhile, “We all took LSD,” says May, moved away in 1975, going “Generally it wasn’t about getting onto a successful career in band wasted all the time, it was about management with clients such as The raising your consciousness. Because Stranglers and Big Country.

it was highly illegal, sometimes you’d end up sitting in darkened rooms with a candle, everyone a bit paranoid.”

May recalls meeting up with disapproving local mods at the Bowling Alley. A peace pact was made, with the mods’ caveat, “Just stay away from us when we’re on the pills”. There was no such peace with the police. Local law enforcement officers Ron Berry and Andrew Harvey were on a mission.

“They thought that if you started on cannabis you’d end up on heroin and would die,” remembers Ian Grant, “They were on a mission to save us from death

“We thought we were going change the world,” he says now, “How much we actually did so, looking back from 50 years later, is open to question. But it was an extraordinary time, and lots of things arose from that era; gay rights, the vegetarian food movement, an interest in eastern religion and meditation and so on. I sometimes wonder where that counterculture is today.” Where? It could be here. Worthing, get off your phone and get amongst it. Let’s get prepared…

A ho-ho-whole lot of Christmas fun coming to Adur and Worthing CHRISTMAS CHEER IS ON ITS WAY TO ADUR AND WORTHING THIS WINTER A host of fun-filled and family-friendly events are planned across the area in the run up to the festive season. So why not support local businesses and head along to one (or more!) of the many events this December. There really is something for everyone on offer this December across Adur and Worthing. From markets selling fine festive fare produced on your doorstep to children’s Christmas crafts sessions and meeting some of Santa’s reindeer, there’s a host of activities to ensure that you can celebrate some Christmas cheer in your local community. So join with Adur & Worthing Councils’ and local businesses to celebrate good times with good food and great community spirit this Christmas time. Councillor Kevin Jenkins, Worthing Borough Council’s executive member for regeneration, said: “With a thriving town centre, a growing number of independent traders and a host of family-friendly activities, there’s lots of opportunities to have festive fun in the town this winter. “Throw in the biggest and best pantomime the town has ever seen, and there really is no excuse not to discover what Worthing has to offer this Christmas.”

5 FUN THINGS TO DO THIS MONTH

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is such a nice production because it combines the fun slapstick pantomime style with the magical Christmas elements to top it all off. There’s going to be an abundance of snow, animals, singing, dancing and of course Christmas cracker jokes that you don’t want to laugh at but you can’t quite help yourself.

Here’s our pick of 5 free fun festive things to do:

love December. Pantomime is one of those fascinating British traditions that has been going since the dawn of time (well its English origins begun in the early 15th Century), and this year we have an extra special show to make everyone’s Christmas magic.

We’ve had some really great casts over the years. My favourite so far was last year’s duo of Richard McCourt (Dick n’ Dom) and comedian Patrick Monahan in Peter Pan; I ended up seeing the show five times and every time I laughed at something different, thanks to some wonderful ad-libbed comedy routines!

16 Dec - Southwick Square Christmas Market

The Worthing Theatres Christmas pantomime of 2017-18 is ready to answer the question: “Who’s the fairest of them all?”

Held in Goring Road, local traders will be selling a host of goodies and tasty treats for all the family - 9am to 2pm

It’s time for Panto... (Oh yes it is!)

We recently had our press launch and I can tell you the cast this year are hugely talented and so down to earth.

Queensway in Lancing is host to a range of Sussex producers selling the best festive fare from across the county - 9am to 1pm

A wide range of local food, drink arts and crafts is available in East Street, Shoreham perfect for those who have left their shopping to the last minute! - 9am to 2pm

And, Worthing Ice Rink in Steyne Gardens to 28 January

The fully covered ice rink ensures festive fun whatever the weather

We have ‘The One and Only’ Chesney Hawkes, who will be our dashing prince and will raise the roof with his legendary vocals. We’ve brought in X-Factor stars and West End actresses Niki Evans and Cassie Compton, CBeebies BAFTA nominated Swashbuckle duo Richard David-Caine and Joseph Elliot whom kids big and small will all love, and a return from our wonderful dame last year Simon Howe. Jo Brand will also be making a special video appearance as the magic mirror; she’ll keep us well informed as to who is the fairest of them all. We have partnered with Chestnut Tree House to raise awareness and funds for their magnificent children’s hospice, and we’ve also teamed up with Northbrook MET College who have produced a glorious giant apple in the Pavilion Café Bar foyer! Plus local boys and girls who have auditioned to be in the show will play our seven dwarfs and our juvenile dancers, so make sure you give our future stars of the stage a big round of applause when you join us! Whatever you’re doing this Christmas, I hope you enjoy the wonderful festive holiday.

IT WOULD HAVE BEEN EASY to miss the Cellar Arts Club by its concealed location just off the seafront were it not for the experimental music coming from it on 22 October! The low-ceilinged venue provided a great atmosphere for the Train Of Thought Electronica night, with music that bridged the gap between experimental and noise. There was every kind of weird and wacky, from the ambience created by Orok to the incessant chanting of PSK; as their ethos will tell you, the Cellar Arts Club is the home of left field and experimental in Worthing. Looking forward to next month, the Cellar Arts Club hosts its first anniversary party on 1 December. Later in the month, local bands Original Music Unity and Folk In Adur will be hosting their own headline shows on 9 and 14 December respectively.

Joe Bunn’s Bardic Trials Rename Worthing

HAVE YOU EVER NOTICED that in Worthing, everywhere is named after exactly where or what it is? We used to have the boringly named District of Worthing, which was three places: the Computer shop, the Barber Shop, with the Bar Next Door sandwiched between the two, next door to both of them. We have two different bars named after the house number of the street they’re placed on. We have two separate clubs/bars in cellars that are named just that. Until very recently the one of the only clubs in town was called ONE CLUB. And there’s tonnes of shops whose names are cunningly composed just using the item they sell (say Bikes) and the word Shop (shop) (saying that, there was that interesting war between the owner of Michael’s cycles, an institution, and the other shop up the road which was called Mike’s Bikes, team Michael all the way). And it’s dull, makes me feel like yawning so wide that I swallow all the signage outside every establishment in Worthing, then puking up the letters so they form new interesting titles. (There are, of course, exceptions to this rule, but that wouldn’t make an engaging article). But don’t worry, because I, as per blinkin’ usual, have a solution, that will also help with the empty shop situation in our town centre. Why don’t we make fake signs for non-existent shops for items that don’t exist? Let’s task different art groups with fashioning, painting and erecting signs onto empty shops in our own Sunny Worthing. Brighten the place up with a lick of imagination and maybe encourage a few shop owners to change their own boringly named shops. Here are a few examples of signs you could make:

• Worthing War Things • Bum Club • The Quangle Wangle’s Trousers • Fizzbo’s Joke Shop and Family Planning Clinic • The Artificial Art Official Gallery • Bennington’s So there we have it, once again, a fun art project for you to try at home, or in the studio. Giant, impressive signs that will cause people to flock from miles around to catch a glimpse of our fantastical, imaginary shop signage. See you again next month, for another dose of the medicine you never asked for, because you didn’t ask for.

This month, we’re focusing on Shoreham; in particular to showcase a few of the must-see forthcoming events at the Ropetackle Arts Centre. During January (from Saturday 20 until Saturday 27), the venue hosts eight days of concerts, workshops, special events, films and talks in the form of The South Coast Jazz Festival. The festival, now a firm and muchloved fixture on the jazz calendar, offers a whistle-stop tour around the ‘world of jazz’, with an exciting and varied international programme, with the likes of Pee Wee Ellis, Clark Tracey Quintet, Gwilym Simcock and many more playing live. See southcoastjazzfestival.com for further info. Earlier in January, the multi-award winning Gaelic singer Julie Fowlis will showcase her ‘crystalline’ and ‘intoxicating’ vocals.

Julie is deeply influenced by her early upbringing in the Outer Hebridean island of North Uist and is a warm and engaging live performer; her performance at the Ropetackle being a welcome return, following her sold-out show there in 2014. And, to get you ‘on the front foot’ for Christmas, Ropetackle will be the home to a magnificent Christmas Ceilidh on Thursday 7 December. Kate’s Kitchen Band are at the fun end of the spectrum with a line-up as eclectic as it is varied, from top end piccolo to acoustic double bass, melodeons, fiddles, percussion, guitar and mandolin. Their heritage comes from English, Welsh, French, Scottish, Irish and American traditional tunes and dances – Morris and Celtic – so a truly danceable mixture of sounds from start to finish. And the ‘caller’ teaches all dances, so no prior knowledge is needed. For further information on these events and more on comedy, theatre, cinema, children’s events and more, do visit the website ropetacklecentre.co.uk

DONATED BY KARDINAL INDEPENDENT LIVING SANTA VISITED Worthing the other day. He knew what a gem the place is and decided to have a day off and enjoy himself. He left the reindeer at the Cowshed, and parked his (8D,6) in Union Place, where he bought a couple of tickets for the panto (7A,4 & 8A,5). He remembered last year’s sellout, Peter (10A,3) at the Pavilion- he’d advised them on the flying. Going to a (7D,4) is a tradition, isn’t it? Especially if you get to see a (6A,4) from the telly! He had a long lunch at St Paul’s, and realized he needed to get his skates on, so after a visit to the (2A,7) on the Steyne, he zoomed round all the amazing studios and shops, from East Beach via Inspired by the Sea right over to the West End, filling his (4A,4) with unique and beautiful gifts for Mother (6D,9) and the (6D,9 – 3D,3). What a haul! As he lugged his heavy (4A,4) across town, he thought how lucky he was to have this very important job as (3A,6 – 6D,9). He chuckled to himself as he thought about the sweet and funny letters he gets, and how he and the reindeer enjoy all the carrots and mince pies people leave out for them. (He often gets a glass of (11A,6), but doesn’t share that with the reindeer, obviously.) Passing through the lively Montague Street market, he remembered to pick up some holly and (1D,9) to put up at home. He hurried the reindeer up Chapel Road to collect the (8D, 6), making a note to catch the latest movie about that (9D,4) from Peru – perfect for (6D,9).

Hungry again after his busy afternoon, Santa headed for home, where he had already prepared tea for himself and the (6D,9 - 3D,3); those sausages wrapped in bacon, (9A, 4 – 2D,2 – 5A, 8), and a spicy, warm drink to keep out the cold (5D,6 – 1A,4). Santa thought he would take it easy tonight, put his feet up and doze by the fire – build his strength up for the Big Night (6D,9 – 4D,3). The reindeer (10D,3) on the sofa, wrapped in (5A,8), watching ‘The Snowman’ and joining in with the song. End of a perfect day, - thanks, Worthing.

THE WORTHING BYPASS

This column will not make you more patient or understanding FOR SOMEONE WHO CLAIMS TO LOVE LIFE as much

as your intrepid correspondent, I must confess to being hamstrung by one or two minor peccadillos which cloud what remains of my sense of reason.

The first appears, like this column, innocuous enough on first glance. That is being told repeatedly by all and sundry that the “world is now a serious place”. Ooohh. The world’s gone and got all fusty and worthy and self-righteous has it? Nonsense. The world has always treated itself far too seriously, cocooned in a gentleman’s club of aloof, old worldy self-importance whilst forest fires blaze, oceans rise and irritating tyrants try and kill us all. Indeed, like my shell-shocked compadres of Cold War Britain, we were brought up to believe that the next day would at best be our last and at worst, like inhabiting the spine-chilling postapocalyptic scenario illustrated so vividly by the most sickeningly chilling film in the history of cinema, Threads. We were made to watch that tortuous doomsday scenario as school children, for goodness sake! No wonder we walked around like extras from Dawn of the Dead, terrified into a semi-permanent state of stupefied, zombified fear. And we didn’t even have humour back then. Post-apocalyptic deathscapes were bleaker than an episode of Noel’s House Party and Sean of the Dead had yet to teach us how to laugh at our own impending demise. No, we had Threads and I’m still traumatised.

…We had bonded. In that moment, my fellow passengers and I had - unlike our erroneous rail service provider connected.… So, all you Trump-hating fatalists, the world has always been full of nutters trying to destroy us. At least we can get on Twitter and diss their hairdos before they nuke us. The second cause of the Ubiquitous Hack’s discombobulation is much more relatable. You’ll

like this. It’s when the Southern Fail conductor, or hospitality manager, or prison guard – whatever they’re calling themselves these days – gets on the address system after you’ve gnawed your way through finger nails and flesh until bits of bone protrude as you try and figure out why you’ve been stationary for three days without a hint of a reason; just silence and the occasional juddering of the carriage as fast trains scuttle past, impervious to the eternal suffering of Southern Fail passengers in our parallel universe of pain. It is then, that our well drilled executioner announces: “Thanks for your patience and understanding”. It’s not their fault, they’re trained that way and please give a moment of empathy for those poor, unfortunate souls at dinner parties when they have to admit who their paymasters are whilst trying to stop their bottom lip from quivering. Having reached a pinnacle of impatience, bordering on blood lust, I blurted out: “I’m NOT patient and I don’t UNDERSTAND!” My fellow passengers spun round. I was most embarrassed. That was until I saw their kindly smiles, the gentle nods of the head, the sympathetic frowns of conspiratorial sufferance. We had bonded. In that moment, my fellow passengers and I had – unlike our erroneous rail service provider – connected. We had become one, united in our common grief. United in a world of hurt. If you don’t believe me, try it next time you hear those ridiculous, patently scornful words: “Thank you for your patience and understanding”. Remember, you have no choice. You’re stuck somewhere between Burgess Hill and Hayward’s Heath with fast trains from another dimension rushing past at hundreds of miles an hour. You couldn’t leave if you wanted to. You have all the patience of a prisoner serving life: you have no choice!

PRUNING • SHAPING • TOPPING • CROWNING • POLLARDING etc And understanding? Don’t get me started. Understanding can only come from enlightenment. You can’t understand something if you haven’t been given an EXPLANATION! So when you hear that cursed phrase: “Thanks for your patience and understanding”, respond immediately as I did, as one even: “I’m NOT patient and I don’t UNDERSTAND!” It could become a mantra, a group confessional: “We’re NOT patient and we don’t UNDERSTAND!” We could form little self-help societies. “Hullo, my name’s the Ubiquitous Hack. I’m not patient and I don’t understand. I’ve been inpatient and ignorant now for 20 years.” Cue polite round of applause, nodding of heads and congratulatory tap on the shoulder as I sit down again. “Good day,” says an elderly grandmother, rising gingerly to her feet. “I’m not patient and I don’t understand. I’ve live through the Second World War, the formation of the National Health Service and more tyrants than you can shake a stick at. I’ve been inpatient and ignorant for 75 years.” Cue wild applause, cheering and stamping of feet. I don’t claim to understand the world either. I know it can be terribly serious and heinously indifferent to the weak and defenceless. But it’s also full of joy, just like the destination at the end of the train journey. It is worth it in the end, dear Hackolyte. You just need a little patience, don’t you? I knew you’d understand.
