FROM THE EDITORS Summer’s here and the living is easy. We’ve got the laidback vibes at the Here & Now office, all we need is a beer, a picnic blanket and something to do. Fortunately, this month Worthing has obliged. From pottering around the houses of Worthing’s artists to battling against the breeze on the prom during the Children’s Parade holding terrifyingly oversized structures built only of tissue paper and bamboo, from watching eye-popping stunts performed in a metal circle that could roll away at any moment to chilling in a field watching Freddie Mercury’s finest moves re-enacted on screen, there’s something to suit you. Come and join us and let the good times roll. n

THE STATE OF WORTHING When I first moved to Worthing, the price of a train ticket to Brighton mattered. ‘ALL CHIPS ARE MINE’ LISA BANFORD, STOATS & WEASELS. VENUE 52, 39 ASHDOWN ROAD.

THESE DAYS, why we are here is less of a talking point – we have so much more to talk about. Here & Now is first and foremost about community, about the people in Worthing who are making stuff happen, helping raise the profile of all the good things to do around here. And there is so much. At Here & Now, we see Worthing becoming more joined up; we see collaborative projects happening in arts, music, business and schools, across our town and right out into the villages and communities beyond. Grab the opportunity to get involved, go out, try stuff and have fun. These days you’re as likely to meet someone who has made the reverse journey to Worthing from Brighton for a night out. Ten years ago, who would have thought it? This is the state of Worthing. It’s not perfect but it’s ours.

Let’s go to Broadwater!

Head up the A24 out of town and you’ll hit Broadwater, home of the oldest cricket club in Worthing and a rather snazzy triangular green.

TURNER’S PIES

Here’s our pick of what to do: k Treat yourself to an epic fry-up at Picnic with the other parents sneaking in after drop-off k Nab a pie or a black pudding scotch egg at Turner’s Pies (spoil the kids with a meringue the size of their heads) k Check out the pulled pork baps at The Piggery k Pick up a book at the library and then grab a coffee in The Wave (homemade cakes to die for!) k Drinks at Ye Olde House At Home (regular live jazz), The Broadwater (free pool Mondays) or The Cricketers (outdoor pizza oven)

WORTHING MATTERS

50 sides of Worthing with Henna Chowdhury

Which book OR piece of music changed your life?

Here & Now chatted to Henna Chowdhury, a British-Asian mother of three girls who has lived in Worthing for over 30 years.

What did you want to be when you were growing up?

That’s easy; it’s the Koran!

HENNA WORKS as a receptionist at a GP surgery in the town centre and has just been elected as the Labour councillor for Gaisford Ward.

A Bollywood actor of course! Everyone wants to do that: the singing, the dancing – just amazing.

Why Worthing?

Who would you invite to rave/party with you on Worthing beach?

I’ve loved Worthing since I moved here at the age of 10. It’s a town that I have seen change and grow beyond all recognition since my childhood.

When were you happiest? Hmmm, that’s a tough one; there have been so many happy times in my life! The birth of my first daughter was so exciting and the start of a completely different chapter in my life, but the other two will kill me if I don’t say their births were equally exciting! Being elected for Gaisford has also been a whirlwind of excitement. I cannot say just how proud, honoured and actually humbled I feel that the people of Worthing have put their trust in me at this critical time in our town’s development and history.

If you could bring something extinct back to life, what would you choose and why? As I love the history of our area, I would pick something that we have lost and which if I could bring it back would enrich our lives for the better, so I would choose the old Sussex county accent. It just evokes in me rural tranquillity, peacefulness and ducks around a village green!

Who would play you in the film of your life? It would have to be Beyoncé, a proud independent ethnic woman with her own views, or Helen Mirren, as she’s such an amazing actor.

As long as they were respectful of the environment and other beach users and behaved themselves, I would invite all the people of Worthing. It would be a great community gathering with music, food, laughter and love!

What single thing would you do to improve Worthing? That’s easy, and it’s the main reason I stood for the council: it’s to give all those people in Worthing who feel ignored, unrepresented and marginalised a voice, a voice that says they do matter, they do count.

What would you donate to Worthing Museum? I would donate my VERY large collection of hijabs, as a way of explaining and demonstrating how the Asian-Muslim community in Worthing has contributed to the rich cultural diversity that we all enjoy in our amazing town.

What event did you last pay to go to in Worthing (and where)? I prefer free events in all honesty! But I love the traditional pantos in Worthing and we always try and go every Christmas. It’s such a great experience and shows my girls they can successfully combine their Asian heritage with their British identity. n

Creative careers project with Worthing High School Here & Now teamed up with Patt Fallon of Bald Designs to deliver a design brief to Worthing High Year 9 students as part of a creative careers project. HANNAH MITCHELL produced the winning design, making a 3D image, which was selected to feature as the music listings banner this month. Hannah said, “I enjoyed the experience of seeing how creative business people work and the fact that we were given full creative freedom.” Creative Director Patt added, “I am a strong believer in giving students the opportunity to see their designs in

print as an acknowledgment of the hard work that they put into the project. I look forward to September and a new design project with Here & Now and Worthing High School.” Here & Now loves the design, find it on page 25. n

FINANCE CORNER

On the best deal? I’ve moved to my lender’s Standard Variable rate and my payments have gone up – is it worth reviewing? Even if you think you’re on a good deal, the lender’s variable rate is normally the worst rate available, so even if you think it’s cheap you could potentially still save money. Leading interest rates are still at incredibly low levels. By securing a marketleading deal you could reduce your monthly outgoings, or, if you wish, keep them the same and pay off your mortgage faster.

B U S I N E S S F E AT U R E

My current lender has offered me a deal; should I take it? Don’t rush into anything. It’s worth taking advice as to whether greater savings could be made elsewhere. With over 120 lenders available in the market, there is a high chance your lender won’t be the best one! Take a no-obligation review and see if you can save even more money.

I’m worried rates may go up this year. What can I do? If you are tied into your current deal there is normally little you can do without incurring a penalty, in which case it’s normally worth staying where you are (although this will depend on what

rate you are on today). If you are not tied into your mortgage deal, or it’s ending soon, you can secure a new scheme six months before yours is due for renewal. Fixed rates will provide a stable payment which gives security and peace of mind. Ask your adviser to check if it’s worth changing scheme.

My bank won’t lend to me. What can I do? Your bank only provides their own products, so don’t give up hope. An adviser at Emerald Finance will have access to around 120 lenders and should be able to find a lender that can help, or provide guidance on actions to make this possible in the future. If you are unsure as to what your options are, or just want to find out if you can save some money, contact Emerald Finance today on 01903 222940 or pop into their offices at 77 Rowlands Road or 10 Chapel Road in the town centre. COMMUNITY MATTERS

Worthing Rowing Club Rowing is one of those sports at which Britons are supposed to excel, because it involves sitting down and using expensive pieces of equipment like a boat or a bike or a horse.

Most other clubs in Worthing would envy the style and the location of their clubhouse, a white deco seafront marvel neighbouring Splashpoint and Crabshack. Whenever the weather and tides allow, boats for one, two, four and eight are carried across the beach and sculled out into the English Channel. And not just in Worthing. “We row in about thirteen regattas a year,” says vice-captain Emily. “It’s like a little family that turns into a

PHOTOS: JOEL DINNING

bigger family. You get to make friends with people at the other clubs all along the south coast and up into Kent, from Southsea to Herne Bay, Folkestone, Deal and Dover.” BUT AS A COMMUNITY ACTIVITY, it probably struggles unfairly against its own heritage. People find it hard to see beyond lean Olympians, or posh people from Oxford and Cambridge sinking in the Thames, or the hat parade at Henley on a Pimms-drenched afternoon. The members of Worthing Rowing Club bust these stereotypes in just about every way you haven’t yet imagined. Not all of them are lean, hardly any of them are posh and quite a few of them aren’t British.

“We are very inclusive. We have people here of all ages and different nationalities,” says club captain Zuzana as she sits alongside Zultan, Vanda and Eugeniusz. “People think rowing is just for rich people, but we have members from all walks of life.”

New members are always welcome. The club runs several ‘Learn To Row’ courses every year, and they are never short of newcomers. The age range of the new starters is remarkable: older people looking for low impact exercise, women in their 30s and 40s getting back into shape after having children, teenagers finding a new passion. It all feels every bit as open and accessible as the members claim. Once the rowing is done and the curry supper starts, 87-year-old Bob finds himself sitting next to 16-year-old Issy. Bob has been a member for 64 years and has been captain, chair and president. “I

stopped rowing ten years ago when the water started feeling too cold,” he deadpans. But he still comes to the club because he likes the atmosphere.

Issy was inspired by the Olympics. “I came to a taster session for

the Team GB thing and I loved it. It feels like a real family. I’m a lot fitter than I was. My way of judging how much water was in the kettle was until my arm started shaking and now my parents have told me to stop doing that because I fill the kettle too much. I’m a lot more confident since I started rowing. I feel a lot more respected. The people here, regardless of their age, treat me as an equal. There is no status in this club.” n

GUILDCARE

Support for Worthing carers Receiving a diagnosis of dementia affects people in different ways. There are numerous questions that people need answered. FURTHERMORE, AS THE CONDITION PROGRESSES, it is important for people to carry on with their interests and for carers to have time to themselves, even if it is only for a few hours.

Trevor visits the Bradbury Wellbeing Centre and said: “As I’m living

That’s why the charity Guild Care runs a wide range of services from home care to day respite services, as well as dedicated care homes. We can help families by offering a range of support and information as part of their dementia journey.

with dementia, being able to come here gives my wife time to go shopping or meet friends socially. She knows I am safely being picked up and dropped home again by their transport team, so she doesn’t need to worry. This service is very valuable to us.”

Guild Care’s ‘Time Out’ services include a wide range of group activities based at its Bradbury Wellbeing Centre and its Guild Care Centre, group outings in and around Worthing and a range of social opportunities for people to get together, including Sunday lunches and afternoon tea! There is also a new session on Wednesdays especially for people with early onset dementia.

Care Home Open Day Friday 28 June Now in its seventh year, National Care Home Open Day (Fri 28 Jun) encourages homes to open their doors and offer the community a chance to see what goes on in our local care homes. THIS YEAR THE FOCUS IS ON ARTS in Care, celebrating the artistic activities many homes undertake with their residents throughout the year. Eileen Garbutt, Health and Wellbeing co-ordinator at Guild Care’s Haviland House, explains why the arts can be so important for older people. “At Haviland House we use objects, poetry, traditions

and seasonal notes to encourage lots of creativity with paints, pens, fabrics, textures and textiles.

“In early stage dementia it boosts our residents’ social reminiscence and emotional esteem, and in later stage dementia, sensory art and colourful objects grip attention, especially when music accompanies the movement of the colours. Art benefits many people in many ways, from dexterity to creative wellbeing, as well as being a spiritual or social activity. Art works!” Check out which homes near you will be open at carehomeopenday.org.uk.

ARTS & LITERATURE Worthing Artists Open Houses is back! Three weekends: 15/16 June, 22/23 June & 29/30 June

Artists all over Worthing are putting their art on show for three summer weekends, and you are invited to come along and enjoy it all. IN VENUES THROUGHOUT THE BOROUGH, the work of over 200 artists will be on display – some of it for sale. The work includes painting, sculpture, photography, digital art, textiles, ceramics, jewellery and printmaking. There are workshops, pop-up mini cinemas, activities and, of course, refreshments. Entry to all venues is free, and visitors are welcome to step inside and meet the artists, often in the place where they produce their work, and see the art as part of an interior; the effect is inspiring! Not to mention the opportunity to enjoy lovely gardens, and perhaps be surprised by live music or spoken word.

Creative Commissions: Broadwater’s Midsummer Oak Sunday 23 June, 10am-12pm

If you know the story of Broadwater’s Midsummer Oak at the top end of Broadwater Green, then you probably aren’t planning to hang around it on Midsummer’s Eve.

As always, there is something for everyone: young artists will proudly exhibit their work in five of our schools and colleges; professional designers and fine artists DAVID PARKER show high quality pieces in houses, studios and galleries; enthusiastic and skilled embroiderers, LEGEND HAS IT THAT AT MIDNIGHT, skeletons rise from the roots of painters, printers and makers are in houses, the tree and dance around it until sunrise. flats, garages and restaurants. The range is enormous. However, artist David Parker will be doing just that when he launches his latest project at the site of the tree from 10am-12pm on Sunday 23 June, Leaflets with maps of the trail and details of where people can listen to the story and contemplate the ancient tree for the venues are available in numerous outlets themselves. around the town, with further details at worthingartistsopenhouse.com. Commissioned by Adur & Worthing Trust to explore the story of the tree and what it means to people as part of the Creative Commissions 2019, he will be retracing the story through encounters with local people, historians, writers and musicians. The work will result in an audio-visual re-telling of the story which will be presented as a short-animated film and audio podcast. Karen Simporis, chair of Adur & Worthing Trust, says, “We’re excited to help keep the Midsummer Oak legend alive by supporting David Parker’s project. Combining the oral tradition with modern technology has to be a winner! “I’ve got the launch in my diary but might come back at midnight to check out those skeletons!” n

Make me famous, baby! It’s a month of triumphant returns and promising breakthroughs in our local music scene. WORTHING FACE PETE FIJ will reform Adorable, his iconic 90s pre-Britpop band on Creation Records, with all original members for just two gigs at Bush Hall in Shepherd’s Bush this November. Pete asked Worthing-based promoter Thom Milner-Smith of atom productions to be involved.

wanted to learn how to produce my own indie rock music, and this was the place to do it. As I’ve been studying here, I’ve seen how great the young band scene is in Worthing, and that got me very inspired to start my own band. Hopefully we’re making something new and interesting for people to listen to!” Remember where you read about them first. FB @thatdrowningboy Twitter @thatdrowningboy Insta @thatdrowningboy

“I wouldn’t usually book shows in London,” explains Tom, “but when Pete asked me to promote Adorable, I couldn’t say no. This is one of three final Adorable shows; they will never, ever play again, so it’s set to be very special gig indeed.” Tickets were released last month [May] for the Saturday show and another gig at Hebden Bridge Trades Club and sold out in one minute. As we went to press, an additional show had been added at Bush Hall (Fri 1 Nov) with tickets not yet released. A re-release of their two albums ‘Against Perfection’ (1993) & ‘Fake’ (1994) is scheduled for this autumn and will be an opportunity for people to re-assess or discover their music anew. Drowning Boy were a brand new band with just two gigs to their name when they were booked to play a slot at this May’s Brighton’s Great Escape festival, albeit a new band with two self-released singles and a video. This is unusual: bands and artists normally have to build up some momentum for a couple of years before they can expect a call-up from Great Escape. In this case, talent booker Adam Ryan listened to their tracks and booked them anyway on the strength of the music. What turned out to be their third gig at Great Escape was a showcase for some excellent new songs, backed up by a multilayered sound not habitually associated with the classic indie rock format of just two guitars, bass, drums and vocals. Lewis (guitar), Luke (bass) and Lucas (drums) grew up in Worthing and Lancing, and guitarist/vocalist Darcie is from Brighton. We asked Darcie why he came to college in Worthing rather than Brighton: “I DROWNING BOY

Ida Vallens has been announced as support along with Maverick Sabre for Rag’n’Bone Man’s huge gig at Brighton Race Course on 27 July. This is a big step up for her, after highly rated spots in April’s Moves Festival and May’s Alternative Great Escape in Brighton. Tim Keegan has confirmed that Departure Lounge’s reunion gigs and deluxe vinyl re-release of 1999’s Jetlag Dreams album are now joined all three of their albums released for the first time on all streaming platforms. Feast your ears. Worthing Smooth Soul Rebels Lisa Lo has been gigging widely in Worthing and Brighton. We caught them at Casablanca in Brighton for the Alternative Escape, but they’ll be back in Worthing at the Libertine Social on Portland Road on 28 June. Next month we’ll review the fresh crop of talent that came up through S’koolFest this year. We’ll also look at a current artist/producer DJ of two UK number ones in the pop charts who DJs around the world, but still lives in Sompting. n Mike Pailthorpe runs Music Degrees and the Artist Development Programme at Northbrook MET.

and bassist of Perestroika jokes that he had to use the live takes that were “in tune”. But it feels like they were in tune with something else entirely, something we need them to translate for us.

IT STARTS LIKE AN EPIC FILM, complete with overlaid narration, building with choirs and crashing like a wave into an organ that lets the vocal in, echoing and bouncing through your ears, opening the door to guitars, drums and cassette loops. It only gets better from here. Perestroika, the debut album by Perestroika, has been stitched together from 12 different live performances. This is quite likely why the whole thing sounds so visceral and alive. It’s a petri dish of samples, influences, instruments and lyrics plucked from elsewhere. Frank Zappa was so consistently in tune that he could edit live performances into his records (and vice versa) and it would sound seamless. The producer

When I first heard this album, I said to the band that it wasn’t what I expected. I’m disappointed in myself, because from such an exciting, engaging and genre-defying band, why would I have any idea of what to expect? This album is as handsome as they are. n

THOMAS H GREEN - MUSICAL TIME MACHINE Last month the Time Machine followed Steve Davey from his Worthing childhood to London and the initial success of Steamhammer, the band for whom he played bass.

BACKSTAGE AT ROYAL ALBERT HALL CBS SHOWCASE, 17TH APRIL 1970 (L-R: MICK BRADLEY, KIERAN WHITE, MARTIN PUGH, STEVE DAVY)

Steamhammer 1968 - 1971 Part 2

AFTER GUITARIST MARTIN QUITTENTON QUIT to work with Rod Stewart, we left the band in mid-1969 with a line-up consisting of vocalist Kieran White, guitarist Martin Pugh, drummer Mick Bradley and newly joined flute-playing eccentric Steve Joliffe. In August they returned to their home town for a free open air gig in Beach House Gardens, put on by local countercultural sorts the Worthing Workshop.

“People come up to me even today to say they were there,” chuckles Davy, who still lives in the town. “John Peel agreed to play records, but he pulled out so it was just us in the end. It was a memorable night. I remember Ian Grant and John May of the Workshop hammering away at pallets until the last minute to make a stage.” A couple of months later Steamhammer hit Holland, supporting a fast-rising outfit called Led Zeppelin.

“That was daunting, yes,” says Davey, “I had one or two drinks before going onstage. The audience were waiting just for Led Zeppelin, so the ‘Hammer had to warm them up and win them over, which we did, actually. There were three gigs. We had a bit of difficulty at a place called the Circus in Scheveningen. We were all set up to play. There were curtains on the stage with all Led Zep’s equipment behind them, but just as we were about to start, John Bonham started to test out his drum kit at full wallop. We were standing there like dummies waiting for him to stop. Someone had to go back and tell him to pack it in.”

In November 1969, Steamhammer released their second album ‘Mk II’ which, with Joliffe’s influence, saw them pursue a more prog rock direction. After his brief contribution, however, he left to join Tangerine Dream. Steamhammer, undaunted, continued as a four-piece, gigging relentlessly in the UK, Europe, even touring the States. They crossed paths regularly with the likes of Jethro Tull, Genesis, Free and especially Irish bluesman THE ‘HAMMER AND LED ZEP Rory Gallagher. On one occasion, RECEIVE EQUAL BILLING! at the 1970 Plumpton Festival, they topped the bill over Family, a bigger band, and received a rapturous reception, a memory Kieran White always held dear.

“We sometimes took the van right up north for a gig, then were back at 6.00am going to bed,” Davy recalls, “then back up at midday shooting off 300 miles somewhere else. The gigs weren’t very well planned out. Sometimes we’d play twice a night, stopping in to play Middle Earth at the Roundhouse at 2.00am.” Regarding sex’n’drugs’n’rock’n’roll, Davy indicates Steamhammer may have dabbled but no more, regarding themselves “as music students, practicing hard, learning our craft.” Although he admits “waking up one

morning in Münster, looking outside my window and seeing a camel, thinking, ‘Did I have a few too many drinks last night?’ In fact, the hotel backed onto a zoo but I wasn’t too sure for a minute.”

Steamhammer’s third album ‘Mountains’ was released in autumn 1970 and showcases a well-oiled musical machine. It acknowledges prog but goes back to their raw blues roots. One side was recorded live at the Lyceum (at a gig where they were supported by Black Sabbath!). It’s generally acknowledged as their best work and Steve Davy agrees, citing their extended cover of Lionel Hampton’s ‘Riding on the L&N’ as his Steamhammer favourite. The band continued to tour, but it was becoming too much. Years on the road had taken their toll. In April 1971 Davy decided to rest in Worthing, but after two weeks the band told him if he didn’t come back they’d get someone else. He didn’t come back. A few months later frontman White also quit.

A RARE COLOUR SHOT OF STEAMHAMMER IN FULL FLOW (NOTE ROADIE DAVE JONES AT BACK - HE LATER WORKED FOR PETER FRAMPTON)

“Rather ironically, we were at our peak when things started to go wrong,” recalls Davy. “The most money, the best hotels, but with all the travelling the spark went out of the group. We’d gone a bit stale, we weren’t rehearsing, just turning up for gigs and playing, no new numbers going on.” Steamhammer went on to record a final album, ‘Speech’, a noodling, jammed and mostly vocal-free affair, which came out in spring 1971. Before it appeared, tragedy struck as drummer Mick Bradley died suddenly of leukaemia aged only 25. The band limped on until 1973 when Quittenton briefly rejoined and they became the short-lived unit Axis.

“Life after Steamhammer was a bit strange,” says Davy, “I took a rest from the music biz, got back to ordinary jobs and quite enjoyed them: a job in a wine shop, I worked for Woolworths, the council, and so on, ever since.” Guitarist Martin Pugh moved to California and almost had success with Armageddon, fronted by Keith Relf of The Yardbirds, until the latter’s death in 1976. He lives there to this day. Drummer Mike Rushton (see Part 1) went on to success in France with the band Les Innocents. Martin Quittenton turned down an offer to join The Faces and retired to Anglesey in the late 70s, living quietly off the proceeds of hits he wrote for Rod Stewart (including ‘Maggie May’). Less happily, singer Kieran White moved to the States and recorded an album, but success didn’t come calling. He became a truck driver, dying of cancer in 1995 aged 46.

“I retired two years ago,” says Steve Davy, “I still keep my hand in on the guitar most days. It’s now a six string, not a bass, as that’s more interesting on your own; basic rock things to keep my fingers supple. I used to jam with a group called Woodbine in Brighton in the 70s and 80s, but although I’ve made a few attempts at music I never got the same thing back from it. Sometimes when I think of Steamhammer, it does seem unreal.” Steamhammer ended long ago, but their music is still available on CD and online. For fans of blues-rock and prog, the Time Machine recommends listening to ‘Mountains’ and working from there. The ‘Hammer still hits! n

DADIFESTO

It’s National Dad’s Month. Hands off, kids! June is the month us dads get to call our own. Well, that was until some bugger decided to create International Children’s Day (Sat 1 Jun). DON’T KIDS HAVE ENOUGH DAYS to celebrate already? Jeez. Fortunately, there is plenty on locally to make sure any day with any dad goes swimmingly. (See the listings in this here magazine for all the goodies). I don’t know your dad, but I am certain he has enough socks, aftershave, innovative artisan pickles and novelty mugs in his life already. So what would Daddy Dearest most like to receive, after a suitably luxuriant lie-in and a gigantic cup of tea? Here’s a guide to the items that even Amazon doesn’t stock, but which would put a smile on even the craggiest and most sleep-deprived face.

1) The ability to finish a task without interruption

If you could put together a suit that includes a rudimentary cricket boxtype affair, a pillow to soften the strikes to the noggin (with a speaker inside to drown out the whingeing), a utility belt with a never-ending supply of bubbles and shaky stuff and a pair of steel toe-capped Dr Martens, you might be getting close to the parenting equivalent of the hazmat suit.

3) To be able to make friends as you did at school BEING A DAD can be kind of lonely, but we’d be damned if we’d ever admit that publicly. You sit for hours in the park as your children play, feeling awkward, shunned by mums, and conscious that you should be making conversation with other dads. But how to approach them and what awkward small talk to make? Do you look for someone with the same taste in shoes? Eye up anyone in a band t-shirt that meets with your tastes? Thank God, times are a-changin’, and we might have an answer to that.

ONCE A CHILD IS BORN, it spells the death of any hope of seeing the end of your to-do list.

Dad La Soul is a group I set up to help battle social isolation in dads. We have monthly playdates for dads and kids, doing everything from filmmaking and DJ workshops to soft play and dress-up.

Day-to-day tasks are left unfinished, electrical wires remain dangerously exposed and small tribes begin to populate your front garden, mistaking the overgrown shrubs for the Amazonian rainforest.

There are no mums allowed, so us dads can be ourselves.

This is because as soon as tools are brandished, a little voice demands to be taken to the toilet, or have a snack, or be given an accurate explanation of where babies come from, and since you haven’t slept properly for years, your brain rapidly loses track of what it was doing.

For more info, check out www.dadlasoul. com or our private Facebook group. It is essentially the dad version of when women go to the toilet together at the pub, except the kids are invited.

You’ll be able to spot the dads in any room – they’re the ones with the half-shaven beards. It’s not some new hipster look, they are simply too tired or distracted to even notice.

Our next event on Sat 29 Jun is a silent disco beach clean and seaweed tasting session.

2) An indestructible toddler forcefield

Well, that has to beat the hell out of being stuck at soft-play.

ANY TIME A TODDLER runs in your direction, it’s only going one way – a solid skull crashing full pelt into your knackers. They must have some kind of pigeon-like homing device, they’re that accurate. Then there’s the constant whining for snacks, the blows to the head from rough play, the

34

tantrums and the discarded Lego that stings your foot worse than any bear trap.

Until next time pop-pickers, keep your chin up, your shoes polished and your smiles honest enough so they reach your eyes. n

So you’ve never been to...

AN OPEN HOUSE/GARDEN/FARM Our appetite for snooping through other people’s keyholes is insatiable; how else to explain the popularity of reality TV and social media? IF YOU FANCY YOURSELF as Worthing’s answer to Keith Lemon, then seize your chance to see behind the scenes of some local hidden treasures.

So what’s going on? First up is Farm Sunday (9 Jun), when hundreds of farms all over the country open their gates and give people a chance to discover real farming first hand and see how their food and more is produced (farmsunday.org).

That’s great, but I’m not a fan of the great outdoors! No problem. How about

the Worthing Artists Open Houses (weekends through June; more on p X), when artists all over the town put on fantastic displays of local work in their own homes? You might be treated to an impromptu recital on the saz (a traditional Turkish lute/guitar), snatch a sneaky glass of Prosecco or join a vintage tea party. One venue has even managed to squeeze in a One Bum Cinema under the stairs (Venue 52).

Gardens are more my thing… Then head over to Ambrose Place (23 Jun) and explore the

back gardens of these imposing listed buildings as part of the NGS Hidden Gardens Day, with lashings of homemade tea and cake Check out ngs.org.uk to find other local gardens open near you, including St Barnabas House Hospice.

Still feeling nosy? We’ve got one more treat for you, with the annual opening of the ancient Fig 13 AMBROSE GARDENS PHOTO: JUDI LION

Garden of Tarring. Tucked away on South Street, legend has it that Thomas a Becket planted a fig tree there in 1162, although the majority of the trees date from 1745. Once a year on the first Saturday in July, the current owners open up for visitors, dressing up in period costumes, providing live music and serving up afternoon tea to those popping by for the day. n

Worthing, weirdly, has made the news recently. And by news, I don’t mean the average local headline about how an especially deep puddle was spotted in Tarring. I mean featuring-in-a-nationaltabloid-news. WE’VE FINALLY MADE IT GUYS! We’ve made it – for complaining. Which is a shame, although God knows I do a lot of it, albeit sneakily hidden behind the pretence of satire within these pages. Couldn’t we somehow switch all our local problems upside down? Perhaps by marketing ourselves as a sort of theme park town. Escape rooms have become popular in recent years; Worthing even has a particularly good one. What if we turned the whole town into one huge escape room? It’d be the most difficult one there is.

I jest, of course, because there are many more positive things happening in this town than there are negative. We have a beautiful award-winning pier. We have an underground culture of poetry, art and experimental music that outstrips even our oddest neighbours. We stick together, and we know we’re not Brighton, but we also know that’s a good thing. We are our own thing. We are WorThing. That’s a thing.

The only reason that any of this made national news is because these heinous acts are so very rare in our town. All the positives are just there, every day, continuously, in the background, so you don’t notice as much. Maybe there’s your idea for this month. Could we make some form of newspaper, maybe something that comes out monthly, that celebrates the best of Worthing? It would take a team of hardworking staff to make it every month, but we could fill it with good news only. A paper that reminds us how good we have it Here and Now.

THE WORTHING BYPASS

This column will not make you put on weight I have someone looking at contract law, another examining the intricacies of the Irish backstop, number three is surveying the standards of competency for architectural landscaping and the fourth slips my mind, but it’s something important.

nuggets of information to be used, or more likely, instantly forgotten or cast away, such as: does a magpie squirrel things away and since when did a squirrel become a verb and why not a magpie? Any ways up, one thing I have learned from the Dalai Lama, or it may have been Archbishop Desmond Tutu, is finding the joy in small things. One of them, possibly the least devout, waxed lyrical about his love for huge tubs of ice cream. His host would stock up and be disappointed when the great man – whichever one it was – would barely take a couple of licks from one scoop, never mind devour the rest of the tub. Like a mighty squirrel, I magpied that one away (no, it definitely doesn’t work). But I do peck at things. It’s my contribution to saving the environment and the NHS: I’ll be resolutely underweight to counterbalance the heaving deficit. I must confess to having the devil’s appetite for peanut butter, but only by the tiny teaspoon. Same with cheese. A recent sortie to Worthing market saw herself conduct a clandestine raid for a new hat or some such paraphernalia, leaving me lonely and unencumbered. A nearby cheese stand with toothpick popsicles of goat, sheep and cow cheese made my nirvana. Sticking in chillies and garlic only added to the ecstasy. I bought a bag full. It’ll last forever.

ILLUSTRATION: ABI ELSE

Even fish and chips on the seafront is a tempered affair, favouring small portions. Before you spit your coleslaw in my face, just think of the benefits of attending the next outdoor food festival in Worthing, embracing the opportunity to devour all those fabulously tasty morsels without fear of rupturing internal arteries through massive overindulgence. Pecking: it’s the future. Do magpies peck? Surely they must.

THE IMPORTANCE OF SMALL THINGS cannot be overstated. All this I confess in response to the ever-pressing question, what are you doing? No, says she – the Beloved Hackette no less – what are you doing? I, says I, as proud as proud can be, am sucking on a teaspoon of chocolate Nutella. The door whooshes closed as I lean back, feet on desk, heckling behind her pitter patter down the stairs: I’m multi-tasking by delegation. Although, to be fair, most of the time multi-tasking comprises of doing nothing much at all, especially in the arena of thought, where I am a vacuous vessel. No Citizen Kane am I. Citizen Can’t more like. More of a magpie, squirrelling away

46

Finding succour in the small things could even lead to avoiding a triple heart bypass operation – yet another added benefit to heartily devouring the flavour of this organically wholesome column: a healthy Worthing Bypass for all! Stress could still be the death of you though. I must confess to being no good at stress at all. I just don’t get it. See, when I multi-task by delegation, I ask one part of me to get on with looking at contract law, another to examine the intricacies of the Irish backstop, number three to survey the standards of competency for architectural landscaping and the fourth to coordinate the whole sorry ensemble. The conscious me gets on with sucking a teaspoon of chocolate Nutella. Bite-size bliss. n
