COVER ARTWORK : JON HARRIS
FROM THE EDITOR
Think Big Worthing A NEW YEAR BRINGS THE PROMISE of change, of fresh thinking. At Here & Now, we’ve looked ahead at what’s to come in 2019, but we’ve also reflected on where we are now, and why that should give us hope. Our seaside town is growing and regenerating; new events, new buildings, new faces and new stuff that matters are popping up everywhere. Our community is growing and changing; we’ve got plenty of ideas to help you get involved, whether you volunteer or start your own thing, change the world or just your shopping bag. We want you to think big in the year of the pig, and H&N is full of reasons to be cheerful. Get out there and do something new for 2019, we’ll be right there with you. n

HOPE Days start getting longer, nights grow shorter: this year the Solstice happens just before a big fat full moon, and that means all of Worthing can start to feel a little Hope. In music, there is a lot to look forward to in 2019. AudioActive, with the support of patron Rag’n’Bone Man, has been quietly beavering away through the winter, running free sessions for young people who want to learn how to play in bands at Ridiculously Cool Studios, and teaching them how to make electronic music at Northbrook MET. They have also been developing some of our young talent; watch out later this year for a series of exciting local events, showcasing these new artists together with some street-credible headliners who would never have previously played Worthing. Music venues in Worthing continue to go from strength to strength, with original music gigs booked way ahead at Bar 42, St. Paul’s, Coast Cafe, Cellar Arts Bar and the Blues nights at the Worthing Pier Southern Pavilion. This is encouraging news, considering that over in Brighton, Sticky Mike’s closes in January, while the Haunt is being moved elsewhere. Dance music will miss drum & bass promoter Samurai Nights, with owner Mark Guthrie moving on to a career in law.
If you’re opening this fine magazine any time after 21 December 2018, something wonderful will have happened. IN SPITE OF ANY DEPRESSION or grumpiness (whether political, economic, 24-hour media-induced or simply because of that cold you can’t shake), immediately after the shortest day of the year, also known as the Solstice, the light begins to return.
However, local minimal techno promoter/label Minimo’s Lloyd Tate proved the hot ticket for New Year’s Eve. Their uncompromisingly cool dance music party at newly upgraded Tangerine Bar sold out online in the last week of November, which is a big deal because this kind of specialist dance event is the kind at which Worthing was supposed to be weak. We hear that there may be tickets on the door for those determined not to miss out!

EXTRA HELP WORTHING It’s nearly Christmas, and a time for families and friends to get together. But for a large percentage of our population, this is not an option. According to Age UK, 3.64 million people over the age of 65 live alone. THE COMING OF WINTER, and especially Christmas, only amplifies this loneliness. Living in solitude does not mean that the elderly don’t have family. But trying to juggle work, children, school, home, and so much more has left most family members almost depleted, and unable to care for their elderly. I want my team at Extra Help Worthing to make a difference. We help the elderly stay in their homes, happy, proud, and cared for. Whether it’s cooking their meals or taking them out for some fresh air, we want them to live longer, healthier, more fulfilling lives. n

HOPE There’s a wonderful thing called Recovery College in Sussex, funded by the NHS but set up as a place where people can go and learn skills to cope with mental health challenges. Worthing artist Barbara Robertson piloted a workshop through the College in October aimed at reducing the fear of putting paint to canvas, and now intends to take this further.
“In the coming year I hope to run fee-paying workshops that might then finance free courses for those who are disadvantaged or with mental health challenges,” explains Barbara. “If this is something that you might like to support, I would love to hear from you via my Facebook page PAINT GO.” We wish you all the best and hope that you start to see the light coming back for all your projects and fun this year.
THE EXPLODED CIRCUS CREDIT: ERIC RICHMOND
The running of Worthing Theatres and the Museum will be outsourced this year, and the current team, which has done so much to update and regenerate our unique venues with innovative content such as the Summer of Circus, is tendering alongside more conventional companies. Don’t just cross your fingers: write in with your recommendations to Worthing Theatres. It’s a good time to pipe up. Eating and drinking in Worthing has been transformed in recent years, with the arrival of quirky independent restaurants and the rise of the micropub. DD’s Jerk n Ting left its permanent address (replaced by vegan burger joint Cactus Kitchen Gals) to join the growing ranks of pop-up restaurants, but the Montague Quarter now houses new Caribbean/ Spanish restaurant Auntie Bunny’s Hut. Unfortunately they’re not open Christmas Day, or my family would be in there for jerk turkey. Here & Now is a magazine that speaks with a diversity of editorial voices, and we are always working to expand and include more of Worthing’s 100,000-plus inhabitants. It’s great to see in this month’s issue the opportunity to get involved with groups such as BAME and LGBTQ+ Worthing: Let’s Go By Train Folks!, alongside the introduction of adapted cycling scheme CYCALL and the many volunteering possibilities out there.
Mike Pailthorpe is Programme Leader for the Music Foundation Degrees at Northbrook MET and also helps run local Gospel community choir-turned-TV stars Spring Into Soul, who perform in Worthing at St Paul’s on Saturday 2 February alongside a full supporting bill and Soul DJs after-party. n

AUNTIE BUNNY’S HUT

MAINTENANCE TEAM VOLUNTEER Since I started volunteering I have made new friends for life. I’ve been volunteering for 11 months in the Maintenance Team at St Barnabas House. “I HAD NEVER DONE VOLUNTARY WORK BEFORE in my life, it had never even crossed my mind. I decided to volunteer as I wanted to give something back after losing my wife in the hospice. “When my wife was ill, I used sit in the cafeteria where I met volunteers who were so kind to me. They said, ‘If ever you need JOE BRYANT, MAINTENANCE TEAM VOLUNTEER

to come in here for a coffee and a little chat then let us know.’ A few months after I lost my wife, I remembered how nice they had been to me so I took them up on their offer. Now I’ve made friendships that I would never have made otherwise.” Joe Bryant – Maintenance Volunteer, St Barnabas House
Could 2019 be your year to volunteer for St Barnabas House? St Barnabas House is recruiting for new volunteers to join its team in the hospice, in the charity’s shops and at fundraising events. There are a wide variety of roles available, from maintenance to admin, reception support to coffee shop, gardening and vehicle upkeep.
VOLUNTEER RECRUITMENT OPEN DAY ON FRIDAY 18 JANUARY, the hospice’s Voluntary Services Team would like to invite anyone interested in volunteering to their informal volunteer recruitment open day. Drop in any time between 10am - 3pm to meet some of the current volunteers and members of staff and find out how you can make a difference by helping your local hospice. COMMUNITY MATTERS
Volunteer in 2019
There’s an episode of Friends in which Phoebe spends an entire day trying to find an act of kindness that doesn’t deliver some sort of benefit to the person doing the deed. TO CUT A SHORT STORY EVEN SHORTER, she fails. Every single example of giving something away rebounds with something good. Everyone who has ever been a volunteer knows this to be true. You do something that isn’t for your own gain and you feel much better for having done it. You make new friends. You learn a new skill. At the very least, you can almost guarantee that you’ll end up feeling all warm and tingly. Volunteering is going on all around us all the time, the vast majority of it unseen. Not every volunteer gets to wear a high-vis vest or an Olympic Games Maker uniform. Not everyone gets nominated for a Sunny Worthing Award. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t rewarding and vital to the quality of life in our town. In fact, if all the volunteers in Worthing were laid end to end, not much would get done until they all got up again and carried on. These pages list just a few of the many ways in which you can get involved and do something quietly wonderful. From litter picking in the great outdoors to book-keeping on your backside at home, there are options for everyone. So why not sign up for something? Do it today!
Pedal Empower WORTHING’S LONG AND LOVELY PROMENADE is a great place to ride a bike. But what about those who can’t ride on their own due to a disability or health issue? The good news is inclusive cycling is now only a few months away, thanks to Community Interest Company CYCALL. Founders Martine and Rob Walters hope to launch their accessible bike scheme in the spring, when you might spot specially adapted tandems and side-by-side trikes joining wheelchair transporter bikes and even wheelchair tandems pushing along the seafront. Better still, you might find your own feet on the pedals. The whole scheme depends upon volunteer ‘buddy riders’ to help propel these extraordinary machines along, sharing the ride with people from care homes, schools or hospices. CYCALL wants to encourage the empowerment and confidence of disabled individuals in an atmosphere of positivity and fun. Martine knows how important it is not to let a disability stop you.
“I have a degenerative muscle wasting disease called CharcotMarie-Tooth Disease,” she explains. “I was diagnosed in my teens and now use a wheelchair.
“We knew that Worthing would be ideal for an adapted cycling scheme: the promenade offers a ‘Changing Places’ toilet, ramped access and disabled parking. It’s a beautiful place to enjoy the restorative sea air.” Since its launch in May 2018, CYCALL has received an overwhelming amount of community support, including donations and grants from local businesses, Worthing Rotary Club, West Sussex Travel Society, Worthing Community Chest, Sport England and Adur Council. HELP AND ADVICE FROM COMMUNITY WORKS Looking for other volunteering opportunities? Community Works volunteering platform will help you to search for, find, and register your interest in a volunteering opportunity. Get searching now at volunteer.bhcommunityworks.org.uk Before you start volunteering:
• Work out your reasons for volunteering. Then find an opportunity that matches. • Don’t be shy. Know what you want and ask lots of questions. • Don’t worry. Organisations want volunteers to have a good experience. • Know what you’re allowed to do. Sometimes there can be restrictions around volunteering.
We also organise and contribute to community activities celebrating Diversity. We will be taking part in International Women’s Day on Saturday 9 March. Come along to our next meeting if you would like to get involved. Our next meeting is on Thursday 24 January in Worthing (venue to be confirmed). So you’ve never been to a... MICROPUB Why go? For the range of quality local beer and ales on tap. For the company of passionate, knowledgeable owners, who are proud of their independence and fiercely community-minded. FOR THE INTIMATE ATMOSPHERE; the Georgi Fin used to be a gentleman’s outfitters, while the Old Bike Store was (unsurprisingly) once a bike store. Who goes there? Well, you! People who are happy to ditch the social media and socialise. As owner of Beer No Evil Gareth Harries put it, “We see Beer No
Evil as a kind of coffee shop where you buy beer instead of coffee.” So they have beer…what else? Beer may be front and centre, but you will often find a handpicked selection of local ciders, perries, wine, plus niche spirits such as gin. The Grizzly Bear has

pro-biotic drink Kombucha on keg. Anchored in Worthing sells Sussex ciders.
GARETH, BEER NO EVIL
What’s the snack situation? Friendly arrangements with nearby eateries means anything from locally sourced biltong and takeaway tapas at Rincon de Pepe (Green Man), to sandwiches from neighbours Bosun’s Cafe (Anchored) or The Pantry (Brooksteed). One last thing… Look up their events listings. If you enjoy quiz nights, crib nights, talks from serial killer profilers, folk instruments, brewing clubs, ghost stories or even beer festivals, there will be an event to suit at a micro pub near you. PLASTIC FREE LIVING
The Tide is Turning for Plastic Pollution We are a town by the sea, making water and plastic pollution key issues for us as a community, so it’s no surprise to see movements towards zero waste and plastic-free living gathering pace all over town.
If you’re determined to leave a lighter footprint in 2019, stick Saturday 9 February in your diary and go along to the Seed Swap and Spring Fair at Oak Grove College from 12.30-4.30pm. There will be a host of stalls with plenty of hints and tips for those embarking on the journey to sustainable living. n

Pop down with a container or use one in-store and stock up on everything from nuts, fruit, muesli and pulses to toiletries, cleaning products and even recycled loo roll, cloth nappies and bamboo toothbrushes. Volunteers are happy to help you fix everything from clothing to standard lamps to Leap-pads to stop them ending up in landfill. Their next session is Saturday 26 January at the Friends Meeting House on Mill Road from 10.30am-1pm. Refill Worthing is trying to break our single-use plastic habit with over 40 spots around Worthing which will refill your bottles for free. Led by Worthing Climate Action Network and supported by Worthing Borough Council, Transition Town Worthing, West Sussex County Council and Southern Water, the scheme even has a free app to help you find your fill up: refill.org.uk.

FINANCE CORNER
A Brexit Proof 2019 I write this in mid December and wonder what 2019 will hold. Brexit and Theresa May both looking shaky and her Brexit plan wobbling at best.
B U S I N E S S F E AT U R E
THE LIKES OF THE BANK OF ENGLAND’S Mark Carney’s scaremongering doing nothing to placate the public concern of where we will all be when the dust has settled, and that’s if Brexit even happens, and if it does in what form. Time will tell. That aside it’s a new year, 2019! With it an exciting opportunity to approach the year with vigour, to work on that list of new year resolutions and aspirations to better our lives in the year ahead! Our political landscape may be a mess but that doesn’t mean that we have to be in turmoil! Every new year gives us an opportunity to get on top of those things we mean to do and here’s our tips on both preparing for your financial future this year, whatever it may hold. Clients have been asking what they should do to prepare for 2019 and our top tips are below: Stabilise your mortgage payments – interest rates are still low so if you are on a variable or tracker rate and want some security a 5 year
fixed rate will give a fixed payment that takes you past the short term fluctuations of Brexit. Be careful what you spend – it’s wise to try a build up a buffer as we approach Brexit – it may be nothing changes but its best to have a contingency plan for your finances rather than being caught short.
MATT SUTTON, MANAGING DIRECTOR OF EMERALD FINANCE, your local award winning financial advisers, is here to answer your financial questions. Got a query? Email info@emeraldfinance.co.uk
Clear those Christmas debts – most of us rack up debt over Christmas as we get carried away with the presents for loved ones and general costs of the festive period. Get a plan in place to clear the debt, don’t bury your head in the sand. If it’s on a credit card that charges interest, consider switching to a 0% deal depending on the level of debt. Plan your finances for the year ahead – most people spend more time planning their holidays than their finances and then wonder why they haven’t any money! Whether it’s your new years diet plan or your goal to make your finances work better, both need your focus. Utilise your financial advisers and get planning so you can work towards your goals, whether saving a deposit for your first home, upscaling to a larger property, financing kids university fees or planning that retirement. BABY SWIMMING
Q SWIMMING IS A FANTASTIC FAMILY ACTIVITY and an important life skill. Baby swimming builds early water confidence and safety knowledge.

OUR HOT POOL IS THE PERFECT TEMPERATURE for babies and our eco-friendly salt water sanitiser makes the water super soft and kind to their sensitive skin. We recommend starting swimming lessons from around three months, once your baby is aware of their surroundings and can support their head a little. During lessons, babies start to learn essential safety skills such as floating, turning and propelling themselves along, and even how to go under the water if you’d like to try! Learning takes place in a fun environment with singing, games and playing with our toys.

DADIFESTO
This Year It Will Be Different It’s a new dawn, it’s a new year, and I am feeling, well, I am pooped if I am honest. IT’S TRADITIONAL AT THIS TIME to set yourself a whole heap of imaginary goals to achieve. You know, the ones that are usually in the bin by the time you get through the first week’s conversations of “So, did you have a nice Christmas, then?” with everyone and their neighbour’s cat. I’ve been giving up smoking, determined to lose weight, doing something with that 40-something quid I pay the local gym for a monthly membership for years. Do you know how many times I have actually been to the gym in the last three years? Exactly twice. Twice in three years. So why don’t I go, or, more importantly, why don’t I cancel my membership you ask? Well, for one I don’t like gyms, never really have, unless you count the spit and sawdust ones I used to frequent back when I had teenage dreams of becoming a half-decent boxer. Now, I’m more like the slightly sluggish ghost of Rocky 8 than anything resembling any kind of contender. And two, I can’t do that, that would be quitting, and winners don’t quit! Yes, of course, we all want to be slimmer, fitter, younger looking, firmer, ache less, smile whiter and be more pert-bummed. But you know what? I kind of like my current look. Entering my 45th year on this lonely planet, I am more content about who I am. Even the greying of my beard suits me, or so I am told. And that by people who I can’t even pay to be nice to me, like my six-year-old. A couple of weeks ago, I was a guest, along with twenty other local business-types, of local secondary Worthing High. We spent an incredible day with a massive army of 11-12 years old doing all kinds of ‘The Apprentice’-type activities for the day. As I wandered around the school, chatting with the bright young minds of tomorrow, I reflected on how I was at their age.
Would I have been confident enough to stand on stage in front of a couple of hundred people and pitch a business idea I had just had? Not blooming likely. I would have been bunking off round the back of the bike sheds, cursing everyone else taking part as ‘a square’. Essentially I would have missed out because I was so scared about what my ‘mates’ would have said. Daft, eh? During one of the pitches, a young lady was taken by stage fright. What did the crowd do? They started a spontaneous round of applause, and encouraging shouts of support echoed around the hall until she regained her composure and was able to continue. A pal of mine who was also there under the guise of knowing a thing or two about business sidled up to me and whispered “Bloody hell, times have changed! If someone in my school had choked, we would have ripped the bejesus out of them. They wouldn’t have lived it down for their entire school career”. He was right; it would have been the same for me. Anyway, why am I telling you this, you may wonder? Well, it goes back to my resolutions. Rather than spending a fortune trying all manner of positions and sweaty classes trying not to look like mutton dressed as lamb, I am going to think younger. Not in a seedy, oldest swinger in town kind of way – but I am going to be more compassionate and less cynical by way of making a change. Just like those pupils of Worthing High, and considering I was there to ‘teach’ them, it was me that came away having learned a valuable lesson. Also, this year it will be different. My other New Year’s resolutions will be achievable. I am going down to three cups of tea a day from my usual 35 simply by getting someone to hide the petty cash in the office and ration the teabags as if the Brexit zombie-led genocide I dream about is a reality. n

FASCINATING ADUR
Stroll Around the Sculptures
THE BARNACLE TREES, STEVE GELIOT
RACHEL REYNOLDS’ SCULPTURAL SEATING
Regretting that extra helping of Christmas pud? Whether it’s a hike up Cissbury Ring or a stroll along the prom, we’re spoilt for choice when it comes to bracing ways to burn off the postChristmas blues.
by the skies and the history of the Glasshouse studios, Hopkins’ work is designed to prompt us to look closer at what is around us.
BUT IF YOU PREFER A SIDE ORDER OF CULTURE with your workout, we’d suggest heading over to Shoreham for a wander along the riverside walk. You can even belt out your best tuneless version of “Deck the Halls” with only the waves and an occasional seagull to hear you.
Children are encouraged to hide in Paul Harrington’s hinged and hollowed out mussel shell, which is accompanied by five carved wooden posts perfect for clambering (watch out for the water!). Carved from cedar wood, their tactile organic shapes draw on the simple forms of flora and fauna found in the estuary.
Park up at Ropetackle, and as you drive in pay attention to the waymarkers on the right hand side and straight ahead. If you get up close you can see trilobites and lizards cast into Jon Mill’s 5m-tall structures, as well as elements of boat paraphernalia such as hooks, ropes and toggles.
Rachel Reynolds’ sculptural seating draws on the meandering curves of the River Adur and the colour and texture of the river bank. Cast in concrete, the seating incorporates imported materials with local ones in a nod to the area’s history as a port.
A quick stroll south towards the Norfolk Bridge and you will find another statuesque treasure tucked around the corner. Steve Geliot loves to play games with scale, and his Barnacle Trees are a magnified 10m-tall version of the microscopic barnacles that cling to the pebbles on the riverbed. Run your hands over the knobbly wooden bases and if you’re there at dusk watch out for the fibre optic branches as they light up. As you head back towards the slipway, you’ll come across Amanda Hopkins’ optical lenses built into the balustrade. Children will love peeking through them, with nearby boats and cars unexpectedly appearing upside down, magnified, refracted or reframed. Inspired
Perched on the slipway sits Teresa Martin’s textural cast iron and bronze resin droplet. It may look abstract, but it draws on natural elements such as the tidal patterns on the riverbed, the vegetation, the light on the water and the shapes created by erosion and silting. Peer into the internal cavities inspired by the excavated smugglers tunnels running under the streets of Shoreham. Further along the sea wall on the Riverside walk you’ll find Anna Twinam-Cauchi’s wooden sculptures. Shaped from salvaged and surface-damaged sea defence timber, these carved forms reference the history of Shoreham port with a mixture of native and imported woods often used in marine environments, including greenheart, mahogany, balau and ekki.
Finally, outside Ropetackle, take a pew on Steven Follen’s organic benches which curve around the entrance in an echo of the tidal ebb and flow of the nearby Adur. The benches were created using the gabion technique frequently used to stabilise shorelines, stream banks or slopes against erosion, where metal cages are filled with rocks and concrete. Don’t forget to look down at the ornate grilles around the trees, which are influenced by the ripples on the water surface and river bed. If like us you believe in the absolute necessity for a reviving pint at walk’s end, Shoreham has a pub for you. n

Congratulations! Your business made it through another year intact and that’s worthy of celebration. Running a business is hard but there’s lots of help out there for you.
Thu 30 Jan
Here’s four opportunities to inspire and support you in the new business year. 1. Get out and network. There are loads of amazing people out there who have faced the same challenges as you or are doing the same thing with ideas and passion that could inspire you. Find your people at one of the networking events in the listings. 2. Escape the office or kitchen and try a co-working space, even just for one day. Surrounding yourself with new people in a different space can be a breath of fresh air. For Here & Now, being based at Freedom Works has resulted in exciting collaborations. The Sphere Business Centre in Broadwater is a good alternative. 3. Take up free support and look for opportunities to skill swap. Search out opportunities like the free marketing advice that #ShakeItHub offers. See the Chamber or Colonnade House websites for free or accessibly priced workshops. We list the free stuff in Here & Now. 4. Apply for grants and funding. Adur & Worthing Council with the Adur & Worthing Business Partnership are taking applications for the Small Business Growth Grant and Apprenticeship Grant. Local micro businesses can apply for up to £2500 to fund capital purchases or support with marketing, training or making improvements to their commercial business premises. This funding is then matched by the business. Local small businesses can also apply for a one off grant of £1500 per apprentice, (up to a maximum of 2) to help cover the costs of taking on and training an apprentice. Further info on both grants at adur-worthing.gov.uk n

THOMAS H GREEN - MUSICAL TIME MACHINE
PURPLE SHOES AT THE SELDEN ARMS, WORTHING, 26 MARCH 2017
Worthing Local Gig Photos 2016-2017
28
| January 2019 | HERE & NOW
This month’s Time Machine offers a photo gallery interlude courtesy of one of Worthing’s most devoted giggoers. Since his retirement in 2013, Rod Cohen and his camera have been a regular feature on the town’s small but devoted micro-gig circuit. HE ENJOYS THE MUSIC and camaraderie of local bands who ply their trade in the area, the ones always out there doing it. Rod worked in the Pier’s amusement arcade for 30 years, but is now likely to be found in its Southern Pavilion enjoying a blues night.
“Sometimes I love the blues but there’s only so much 12 bar you can take,” he laughs, “and I love folk music too but I can also only take so much of that.” Swinging between these musical poles, Rod’s own gig-going has tended to take in the Southern Pavilion, The Egremont Pub, Shoreham’s Duke of Wellington pub and the Ropetackle Centre. From Mad Max to Rough Chowder to Catfish to his own favourite, Worthing act, Taylor Maid, he’s usually out there, nursing his camera and a pint of good ale. He has another history, as part of the Worthing Workshop crew in the 1960s, but we’ll leave that for another day. For now, Rod’s camera takes us on a four stop tour of his local scene.
“Purple Shoes have a lovely country rock sound, somewhere between Neil Young and the Beach Boys. Marie Dance and Michael Bickers are key figures round here. She’s a great songwriter and also does the open mic night at Cheers.” The Time Machine says: This shot nails what it’s like to be a five-piece band in the corner of a small pub. It captures the squeeze; the trombonist pushed to the centre for a solo, the guitarist practically falling onto the drummer, the audience shirt sleeve almost invading the guitarist’s space, yet levity is given by daylight cast across singer Marie Dance. STEVIE WATTS AT THE SOUTHERN PAVILION, WORTHING, 14 FEBRUARY 2016
Rod: “Stevie Watts comes originally from Worthing and he’s well-known for his organ-playing, the Hammond, the mod sound. He’s worked with many big names.” The Time Machine says: Although he’s seated, there’s a sense of action, of purpose. There’s a modishness to Watts and the black’n’white lends itself to this, while the composition is a balance of busy – all the musical kit – with the flat, unglamorous backdrop curtain which says this is, indeed, a British seaside town rather than some flashy urban centre.
Rod: “Hickory Signals are a band I really like, one of my favourites, and I’ve seen them many times. They’re a folk outfit and singer HICKORY FEET, WELLY, SHOREHAM, 20 MARCH 2016 Laura Ward has a really big heart, which comes across in their performance.” The Time Machine says: Again, this captures the sense of a small local venue elevated by frontwoman Laura Ward, a soulful and energized presence, singing but alert and ready with her flute while all is a-bustle about her.
Rod: “Why do you want this picture of Laura Ward’s feet? It’s a good picture, though, isn’t it.”
HICKORY SIGNALS AT WEST STREET LOFT, SHOREHAM, 30 JANUARY 2016
The Time Machine says: It is a good picture, Rod. The minutiae often says more than a more obvious shot; the dirty carpet, the brush drum stick, the multitude of cables, and in the middle, those feet, characterful, tattooed, stylishly attired, the feet of a born performer.” n HERE & NOW | January 2019 |

A Modern Take on an Ancient Myth For those of you that are familiar with the Greek myths you may know the enticing story of Medusa, the woman with locks of serpents and a look that could turn you to stone! MORE RECENTLY THE CHARACTER has featured in the novel and film adaptation Percy Jackson & the Olympians when she was portrayed by Uma Thurman. I’m really excited about our performance from renowned dance choreographer Jasmin Vardimon, Medusa, which will have a modern take on this ancient tale. Considering the current political and environmental climate in the wake of #MeToo, global warming and the plastic pollution crisis this piece paints an interesting reimagining on Medusa’s story. Often portrayed as a monster, Vardimon takes a new look at why she was cursed with her hideous appearance and it

certainly made me feel differently toward the character. Medusa is now widely considered a powerful feminine symbol. The Jasmin Vardimon Company is celebrating 20 years of creativity with many highly acclaimed shows under their belt, including Pinocchio, which we all enjoyed when it came to Worthing Pavilion in 2016. As a fan of contemporary dance, I feel very lucky to have such an influential choreographer’s work coming to our town. For those of you that came to see our performance of The Knot recently and enjoyed its modern interpretation of marriage, I would definitely recommend coming to see this too. This production will certainly keep you transfixed throughout, but don’t worry – you won’t be turned to stone! Medusa will be at the Connaught Theatre Thursday 7 February 2019 and tickets are on sale now via www. worthingtheatres.co.uk or at the Worthing Theatres Box Office on 01903 206 206. n

RESEARCH SHOWS THAT BEING COMFORTABLE with who we are, warts and all, is crucial for our wellbeing. Comparing ourselves with others is one of the worst things we can do for our happiness. This is not self-indulgence, it’s about being kind to ourselves when things go wrong. Start by noticing how you talk to yourself. If you’re being critical, imagine what you would say to a good friend and exchange harsh words for kind. To find out more, come to Action for Happiness Worthing monthly meet at Brunswick & Thorn on Tuesday 8 January from 7-9pm.

THE THING THAT REPRESENTS A NEW YEAR along the same lines as the Easter Bunny, Father Christmas and the Ash Wednesday Haunted Dog, is a Baby. Sure, old father time gets a look in, but it’s more about that baby. A BRAND NEW LIFE FOR A BRAND NEW YEAR. But I’ve always thought, instead of getting a fresh start on things, why don’t you carry on, and complete what you started the previous year. Time is arbitrary after all. Failing that, however, I have some old starts (both my own and some other random abandoned starts) that you can have. Think of them as second hand starts. They’ll be new to you. Y2K Bug Prepper’s Start: Wake up on January 1st in the year 2000 in an underground bunker created to protect yourself from any rogue hoaxes floating around when that millennium clock ticks over to zero. Guinea pigs will be provided to breed for meat. This would be a good place to try and stop the internet before it goes too far. 2015 – The only year where I would have been able to reply to the classic interview question ‘where do you see yourself in 5 years?’ with ‘I don’t know, I don’t have 2020 vision’. 2016 – There were many celebrities that started 2016, but didn’t finish it. You could take one of their places and actually do some good in the world. Or just mess about and do sex with people because you’re a celebrity. It’s up to you really. Just as long as you distract Trump for long enough for that whole mess not to happen. 1985 – Wait for those funds from Live Aid to show up. Realise that the recipients of charity fundraising in Africa don’t have time for new starts. 2007 – Start the new year hidden inside Worthing’s Christmas tree like I did. Maybe you’ll be better equipped to confront the bullies you heard. 2019 – Carry on working on the goals you already had. Don’t forget the people left behind. Move onwards. Move upwards. Never stop going forward. Build the best future you can. I’m no good at New Year’s resolutions, but if I was to make one this year it would be this: - No more measuring squirrels. I think I’ll be able to stick to that one. Talk to you next month. n

THE WORTHING BYPASS
This Column Will Not Make You Any Friends The Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell recently declared that he could never befriend a Tory, unable to forgive them their transgressions. This is an odd state of affairs for a highly intelligent man. Why on earth would anyone want to surround themselves with people who only agree with what they say?
Anyway, in the spirit of free enterprise and personal growth (more physical than spiritual – ‘tis the season to be jolly gratuitous is it not?), I have fostered a climate of dissent. The grandkids would have it no other way. The Beloved Hackette, who seldom forgives me my transgressions, is what we call a polarity responder. That is, she’ll pretty much disagree with anything I say. This comes in handy if what I say is utter tosh, such as what you’re currently imbibing, but can become something of a torment as I struggle to make a point that may have a semblance of decency about it. “Not it isn’t” she’ll remark and move on, as if I and my precious point don’t exist.
What really lights the Ubiquitous Hack’s fire is that those holding extreme opposing views eventually come round to meet in the middle so that Brexit supporters are now calling for a second referendum to fall in line with what Independentreading remainers have been calling for over the last few months/decades. But that’s at time of going to press. Who knows what’s going to happen by the time you devour your monthly injection of Worthing high-life via this hallowed publication? Indeed, by the time you’re reading this we could all have been enslaved by a benevolent tribe of worlddevouring aliens who want to spirit us away to a peace loving planet where we just sit around all day playing cribbage and talking about the weather on Saturn. “Lots of debris again Brian”. “Tell me about it Gladys, haven’t seen Mars in months. Have you finished the Sunday supplement yet, pet?” You get the picture.
WHO KNOWS WHAT’S GOING TO HAPPEN BY THE TIME YOU DEVOUR YOUR MONTHLY INJECTION OF WORTHING HIGH-LIFE VIA THIS HALLOWED PUBLICATION?
If that paragraph took a seriously surreal left turn it’s only because even I began to bore myself silly ranting on about Brexit. Imagine how Theresa May feels. Or you, dear Hackolyte. You must feel like a boiled cabbage.
ILLUSTRATION: JOE BUNN
HAVING JUST WRITTEN THIS OUT LOUD, I can now see the appeal. Comradeship Michael Corleone style does have its attractions, vengeful blood-letting aside. All in all though, in the real world, which I occasionally visit, a little bit of spicy repartee livens up a dull wet bank holiday weekend. Where would the 21st century family be without shouting matches between siblings, parent and child, grand parent and devolved offspring, on the disreputable subject of Brexit, I ask you? Brexiteers and remainers tearing strips off each other is becoming something of a national occupation. It’s almost entertaining, if it weren’t for the fact that those with contrary opinions are entirely wrong.
As a Ubiquitous Hack of little to no repute I have scratched a living through cavorting with politicians of every variety in the hope of eliciting a slither of useful, juicy insight. The wait goes on. I once bumped into Boris Johnson – pre Mayoral days of swagger and inflated self-belief – in the green room at an awards ceremony. In a moment of well-rehearsed blustering fake diffidence, he asked me how he should approach the boisterous audience. “Just be yourself Boris” I advised. Little did I know he would take that to the extreme and make a career out of it: Have I Got News For You be damned! Say what you want though, he was, and always will be, great company. At the opposite end of the spectrum, although remarkably similar in many ways, is Ken Livingstone. Just don’t expect to keep up with him on the red wine. All of this, of course, teaches us nothing, which is what I’m here for. I could advise to keep your friends close and your enemies closer.
