WELCOME TO THE WORTHING LIONS ANNUAL FESTIVAL 2019 www.worthinglions.co.uk
Now in its 16th year, this is undoubtedly one of the biggest events in the town, raising large sums for local charities. Worthing Lions receives many pleas for help from individuals and charitable organisations in the town, and we try to help everyone. This year’s festival runs from 20 July to 10 August, even longer than previously. We have two charity markets where we invite charities and community groups to run stalls free of charge in order to raise funds and awareness for their own charity. These are on Sunday 21 July and Sunday 28 July on the prom. Stevens Funfair will run for the duration. We have a large seafront commercial market on 26, 27 & 28 July. Our spectacular firework display from the pier on Saturday 27 July at 10pm has again been sponsored by Yeomans Cars of Worthing. Thank you to all our sponsors for supporting this year’s Festival. And, thank you to Clearwell Mobility and Adur & Worthing Councils for their ongoing support. Two of the main beneficiaries we have helped this year have been the League of Friends in Worthing Hospital and the Blood Runners who deliver vital emergency blood to hospitals in the South of England.

The Yeomans group of garages is a locallyowned family business predominantly based on the South Coast. We have 20 dealerships from Plymouth to Bexhill, and we are proud to represent Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Peugeot, Citroen and Hyundai franchises. Within Worthing, we have Nissan, Toyota, Peugeot and Honda dealerships that have again partnered with the Lions Society to provide the firework display on Saturday 27 July at this year’s Lions festival. Yeomans supports this every year as we believe it is important to give something back to the local community where so many of our staff and customers live. As our company is family owned and local, we understand and know the community that we serve inside out, enabling us to give outstanding customer service at each of our locations. Each dealership is equipped with a full range of both new and used vehicles as well as having full servicing, diagnostic and repair facilities, MOT bays and parts and accessories departments. Many of our fantastic offers can be found online at yeomans.co.uk. We hope to see you at our motor display on the seafront as part of the Lions festival or in one of our dealerships soon.

All the fun of the fair
WIth rock ‘n’ roll dodgems, thrilling rides, vintage classics, inflatables and much more, Stevens Funfair has a friendly, family atmosphere with live performers and entertainment and runs for over two weeks this year as part of the Lions festival. Cut out the Stevens Fun Fair advert to use the coupon!
Modern wheels and classic steals
If you’re a classic car or scooter enthusiast, you’re in luck. Steyne Gardens is gearing up to be covered in vintage vehicles on 27-28 July from 10am-5pm, with owners on hand to chat about their classics. Expect to see your favourites including American models, customised hot rods and old school British marques, all in pristine condition. Seaside Hospital Radio will be nestled between the machines on Saturday providing music and entertainment. If your tastes are more modern, hop down to the prom where Yeomans car dealers will show the latest models of Nissan, Toyota, Honda and Peugeot opposite the Lido.
This year’s scooter highlight is a wonderful display of BSA Bantams from the 50s and 60s, some in their familiar red GPO livery from when they were used to deliver telegrams. Vote for your favourite scooter on the Saturday, when there will also be an official competition held to find the best in show. Don’t miss the Honda Goldwings, whose owners will be lighting up the darkness with their spectacular Ride of Light from Steyne Gardens to Marine Parade and back (with a final lap of honour around the square) at around 9.30pm.
On the buses
Take an unforgettable trip and board one of the restored buses along the prom on Sunday 28 July. Whether you pick a classic Routemaster or the familiar green and yellow livery of the vintage Southdown Buses, there’ll be a fleet of favourites from 90 years ago to present day. Free services will run all day from 10am-5pm, with stops including Sea Lane Café, West Worthing and Worthing train stations, the fantastic Henty Arms beer festival and a shuttle service to the Dome. Enthusiasts and keen amateurs should head to @WorthingBus on FB or admin@worthingbusrally.co.uk for more info.
To market, to market Over the last two Sundays in July, the Lions charity market returns bigger and better than ever. Stalls are offered for free to everyone, from mainstream charities to local good causes. New this year are Cycall, who provide adapted bikes for the disabled, while Men in Sheds return for a second year alongside longstanding participants such as Greek Cat Welfare and St Barnabas Hospice. Homemade cakes jostle with coconut shies along the prom, with all sorts of entertainment and activities for when
your pocket money’s run dry. There will be the usual raffle, where one lucky charity can win the Lions prize of £100, plus a special visit from our new Worthing Mayoress, who will be meeting all the hard-working volunteers on the second Sunday. In addition, a field of gazebos will pop up in Steyne Gardens from 26-28 July for the commercial market, clustered with food, craft and other artisan and independent sellers. There’s still space along the prom, so if you would like a FREE charity or good cause stall at this year’s charity market, download an application form from worthinglions. co.uk or contact Andy on 07919 023618.
Going out with a bang!
The magnificent fireworks display that showers the Pier with light every year is back for 2019 on Saturday 27 July. Taking place at approximately 10pm, the event is run for the public for free by Worthing Lions who bear the cost thanks to the sponsorship of Yeomans Cars of Worthing. Bucket collectors will be out in force so please give generously if you spot one and enjoy the show knowing that you have helped out a good cause!
Enjoy the Summer Festival and remember, the fireworks display is back on 5 November!

Colonnade House, part of Durrington High School’s impressive 100% pass rate year on year for Art & Design. Elsewhere in our town we’ve got new bars springing up like The Whisk(e)y Rooms, new eateries like Pitch, new projects like Neptune’s Larder, exhibitions like Hut which take trash and turn it into recycled treasure. Worthing Pride returns for a second year, bigger and brighter than ever, while later this year Tide of Light returns after a year off. All these events, and many many more, are built on the hopes and imaginations of local people, the dreamers, the risk takers who gambled and hoped it might pay off. We’re proud that they call Worthing home. Let’s celebrate them this month.
Let’s go to Tarring! IF YOU’VE EVER WHILED AWAY the day waiting for the

GUILD CARE
Choose community care
B U S I N E S S F E AT U R E
Choose community care – a career that suits your family and lifestyle commitments.
10
Guild Care and our team of caring and compassionate community assistants have been delivering care in Worthing for the last 25 years, helping the elderly remain independent in the comfort of their own homes for as long as possible. We are now looking to recruit more community assistants to help us expand this much-needed service in the local area. You don’t need to have worked in care before to be a great carer; just be kind and compassionate by nature, highly reliable and trustworthy. Perhaps you have had some experience of caring for a partner or elderly relative, and would now consider doing it as a career.
This role is very flexible, offering a wide range of shifts; you can work weekends and evenings, so it can fit around family and lifestyle commitments. In return, Guild Care can offer excellent hourly rates of pay, a very supportive team, travel time and mileage allowance, a pension and much more. Karen Turner has been a community care assistant with Guild Care since 2010. The former hairdresser says, “At first, I didn’t think I could do it. I must admit it was quite daunting. But after a few weeks, it all slotted into place and now I just love it. The hours are really flexible and can suit anyone. I start early and then finish early and do some weekends. I now have my regular clients that I can see up to three times a day, and they really do become friends. “What I like most about working in the community as a carer is knowing that I’m helping people to stay independent in their homes for as long as possible. That’s really important and gives me a great deal of job satisfaction and pride.” If you would like to find out more about the role of a community assistant, please contact our Recruitment Team on 01903 863154 or email recruitment@guildcare.org n

COMMUNITY MATTERS
Glow with the flow Where once was retribution spat, where bonfire boys made fright, where seas of stagnant darkness sat, there flows a tide of light. THAT’S NOT A HYMN FROM 150 YEARS AGO, but it’s meant
to sound like one because, when it comes to bonfire night, Worthing wasn’t always the best place to be. There was a time when the town was best avoided in early November, as the bonfire boys took their cruel vengeance upon anyone judged to have slighted the working class or offended a Protestant doctrine that its defenders barely understood. Holy smoke, how things have changed.
“This year will see the brightest, most spectacular Tide of Light yet,” explains coordinator Jess Estcourt. “We’ve already completed one round of workshops in schools and now we’ve teamed up with the New Carnival Company, who have been working on the carnival in Rio. They are helping us with workshops in our community, showing us how to light up the night with amazing illuminated sculptures.” The lantern-making will be popping up all over town throughout the summer. You’ll find them at Pride, Rotary Carnival, Green Dreams and even the Pumpkin Picking Patch in Sompting. Tide of Light has also partnered up with the energetic people who organise Worthing Parkrun, and they’ve come up with the brilliant idea of the Dark Run. It may sound like a throwback to the murky days of south coast smuggling, but it’s nothing more threatening than an illuminated 5k adventure. According to Jess, “You can walk, jog or run, but you’ve absolutely got to
glow.”
These days we’re more enlightened. These days we have Tide of Light: a volunteer-led project that sees its genesis in workshops and masterclasses, and its revelation in a shivering, shimmering stream of fairy-lit lanterns and sculptures, surfing through the town on a wave of non-sectarian celebration. Everything you see has been assembled in Worthing by enthusiastic amateurs. Tide of Light is art on legs.
Tide of Light: Saturday 2 November tideoflight.co.uk info@tideoflight. co.uk
If you’re wondering why we’re describing a winter carnival before we’ve enjoyed most of the summer ones, it’s because the work is already underway and you are most welcome to join in.
“We really want people to get involved in the whole process,” says Jess. “We call our volunteers ‘Mighty Makers’ but you don’t need any special skills to make the lanterns. There’ll be adults and kids and instructors, all working together in organised chaos to prepare for the big night. You just need a sense of humour and a little bit of patience.” Some of those already signed up to parade the sparkling sculptures are precisely the wonderful Worthing groups you’d expect – Superstar Arts, Dad La Soul, Sight Support and Blueprint 22 – but the event might hold one or two big surprises this year, not that Jess is giving too much away just yet. “Strange creatures will be washing ashore,” she says cryptically, “carried into

MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Listen without prejudice “Giving someone five minutes to talk can be crucial,” says Mark, a volunteer with Worthing Samaritans for the past two years. IN TODAY’S FAST-PACED WORLD, time is a scarce resource, a truth the volunteers at this local Samaritans branch know all too well; their annual volume of calls has increased from just 175 in 1969 when they started to a phenomenal 25,000 fifty years later, plus 1,500 emails and 2,000 texts.

Sat 6 Jul Worthing Plogging 2pm. Manor Sports Ground. With Worthing Green Party. Get fitter while picking up litter and run/walk for an hour. All ages and abilities.
The non-religious organisation, which is an independent branch of the national charity, seeks to provide round the clock emotional support to anyone in despair or feeling suicidal, and their 24-hour hotline is operated entirely by unpaid, trained volunteers. Now they’re the ones in need, looking for local people to lend a hand (and an ear).
Tue 9 Jul
To mark 50 years of listening, they’re appealing for 50 local businesses to donate £50 so they can continue for another 50 years. They would also love to hear from anyone considering volunteering – “one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done” says volunteer Blanche – and run regular informal drop-ins for those interested (next session Tuesday 9 July at 7pm at the office on Lennox Road). n

Park life
ART Tue 2 – Sun 7 Jul
Do you have a tale to tell about spooky goingson at Clapham Woods or the history of Cissbury Ring? MAYBE YOU USED TO WORK on the South Downs, or you want to talk about what happens to the park in the future? Playwright and writer-in-residence Sara Clifford would love to hear from you. She’s putting together a community arts project with Applause Rural Touring and the South Downs National Park Authority, inspired by the anecdotes of people who live and work in the park. Sara explains, “I am so pleased to be working on this exciting project, and I want to hear people’s stories and memories: what do you know about the park or its history? What do you know about the local myths and legends of your town or village? “What about the present? How often do you visit the park, or do you live within it? What is your favourite place to go and why?

No holds bard with Rainbow Shakespeare’s 2019 season From 16-28 July at Highdown Gardens
Pack a picnic and head up to Highdown Gardens for Rainbow Shakespeare’s magical 2019 season which runs from 16-28 July. ACCLAIMED FOR THEIR COMMITMENT to making Shakespeare enjoyable, exciting and
understandable for all ages, this year’s the company’s alfresco performances pair one of Shakespeare’s best-known comedies, Twelfth Night, with his heartrending tragedy Othello. Director Nicolas Young confesses: “Twelfth Night was my first Shakespeare
experience, at the age of six. The laughter and enjoyment caused me to fall in life-long love with the plays.” He is also looking forward to directing Othello for the first time. “It’s like Game of Thrones on speed. Sword fights, smothering, love, hatred – it has the lot, and shows how any of us, however successful and good, can be destroyed by gossip and innuendo eating away at our insecurities.” Twelfth Night plays from 16-21 July, with Othello following from 23-28 July. Performances start at 7.30pm (gates open from 6.15pm for picnickers). Weekend matinees start at 2pm. n

JOIN THE CLUB
Now in its 11th successful year, Worthing Film Club is a volunteer-led organisation that screens handpicked independent cinema from around the globe in Worthing. July’s offering is Black Sun (2005) by filmmaker Gary Tarn, a visually stunning and thoughtful meditation on the nature of seeing. It centres on artist Hugues de Montalembert, blinded in a random New York City mugging, and explores his subsequent journey adjusting to the loss of his sight. Taking its cinematic cue from great art documentaries like Chris Marker’s masterly Sans Soleil (1983), Black Sun tells a true tale in a highly individual and poetic way. Catch it on 1 July at St. Paul’s. Membership of Worthing Film Club is £30 a year, with access to the club’s DVD library. Non-members can attend for the price of a one-off ticket.

Let’s start with a review of S’koolFest at Pavilion Theatre last month. I’m going to confess my complete lack of journalistic impartiality here, because I put on S’koolFest for Northbrook MET, and it’s my favourite gig of the entire year. We invite local schools to send us their up-and-coming bands, songwriters and MCs, and we put them onstage with a great PA and lights. For many, it’s the first time they’ve ever played in public. For some, it’s a life-changing experience.

Listening Party: Bad Billy Band – Legends in a Lifetime A tide of seaside-southern rock sweeps you out with the waves on the newest album by Bad Billy Band. THE VOCALS, HOWEVER, COME FROM ANOTHER WORLD ENTIRELY, almost like
they’ve been cribbed from the world of 90s indie. This creates a sound that is both new and somehow old at the same time. The tracks of Legends in a Lifetime thrum like the throbbing of a motorcycle between your thighs. You’re driving along the coast, on your way to some backwoods party, and as soon as you arrive, this is being played on the homemade soundsystem. This is a barnstorming shakedown of an album that’ll get you dancing and singing along in equal measure. Be sure to pick up a copy and head down to Bad Billy Band’s next show. In a recent interview, they made sure to point out that their live versions are very different from the recorded album, a different beast entirely. And what a beast they are. n

THOMAS H GREEN - MUSICAL TIME MACHINE Not every rock’n’roll tale ends with stadium gigs, gold discs and blathering to Graham Norton on late night TV. 99% do not. THAT DOESN’T MEAN THEY END IN FAILURE.
They’re the hard-earned memories, the wild times, the ambition and vivaciousness, the musical creativity of young lives burning with promise; the precious stuff forever in the slipstream of those lucky enough. This month, the Time Machine is privileged to travel back with Rob Watson to recall long-gone Worthing band Big Corporation and all that came after. BIG CORPORATION CIRCA 1994, LEFT-RIGHT, CORAL EVANS, ROB WATSON, DAVE LATREILLE, MATT BURN, BEN CASTLE
Rob Watson: Big Corporation (and beyond) 1989 - present

Rob was born in Worthing Hospital in 1971, his dad an estate agent and his mum a book-keeper. He enjoyed school but, after his parents divorced, he retreated into music, developing an obsession with New Order in his early teens. “My step-sister
taped ‘Blue Monday’ at 33 RPM instead of 45, not realising it was the wrong speed, so that’s how I first heard them,” he recalls. “I bought a Casio keyboard and a drum machine and would come home at lunchtimes to play them.” At 17 he moved in with his mate Dave Latreille, and the pair started working on music, with Dave singing and Rob doing the electronics. They were soon joined by guitarist Ben Castle, a friend’s younger brother, who was influenced by Stevie Ray Vaughan. His virtuosic fret-wrangling was incongruous but it worked (“We sounded like New Order with guitar solos”) and the trio’s first gig was Rock Against the Poll Tax at the function room of Littlehampton’s Windmill Theatre in early 1990. They called themselves Big Corporation and started gigging regularly, playing in Littlehampton, Arundel and Worthing (Maggie’s Bar, Rhapsody Wine Bar, The Southdown, The Fountain, Bensons Nightclub, Thieves Kitchen and more). Local promoter Mandy Austen saw them and began managing them. She put them on at rave mecca Sterns for a night called Direct Kaos, with DJ Fabio headlining the main room. The band was expanding. By 1993 they’d added second guitarist Matt Burn and vocalist Coral Evans. Their sound had developed “a bit of a skank to it, like Stereo MCs but more reggae”. Coral parted ways with them after developing ongoing throat problems, while the arrival of Britpop meant times were changing. Matt and Dave moved towards a Beatles-y sound that Rob couldn’t embrace. In 1995 he left and moved back to Worthing.

However, the game was far from over. By the early 2000s, after studying Commercial Music at the University of Westminster, he was making a decent living under the moniker Dynamite Sounds, creating advert music for Adidas, BMW, Reebok, Braun and more. Then in 2007 his music was used 20 hours a week on the ITV late-night phone-in show ‘Quizmania’.
“All of a sudden I had a chunk of money in the bank,” he says. “I could relax for the first time in my life and focus. I spent three months locked away, writing my own music. As Magic Fly I mixed reggae with bleeps and, via MySpace, I was signed to New York label Bastard Jazz.”

Country, saw them playing the Inn On The Prom (now Brio, on the seafront) and took them on.
He released two Magic Fly EPs, but had greater successes with his reggaeflavoured mash-ups as Wicked Devil. A thousand-strong 7” single run of P!nk’s ‘Get The Party Started’ over a rocksteady rhythm sold out, but the one that created the most buzz was his 2008 collation of US band Cage The Elephant’s ‘Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked’ with Max Romeo’s ‘Chase the Devil’, a monster cut that became Zane Lowe’s Hottest Record in the World on BBC Radio One.
“I liked their song ‘Life Inside My Bong’,” Grant recalls. “It had an Ace of Base feel to it, which was big at the time, and I thought they could be too. Dave and Coral had presence, attractive at the front, and the whole thing had potential.”
Of the rest of Big Corporation, Coral developed an acting career before settling to full-time motherhood, Matt went into house support band at The EARLY INCARNATION OF THE BAND IN THE LITTLEHAMPTON GAZETTE business research, and Ben and Dave Mean Fiddler, playing before achieved some profile for their band Ambershades but then went the likes of Desmond Dekker and Kirsty MacColl”. Grant also pressed up 1000 copies of CD single ‘Days’ on his own Phun City label, with Big Country’s Mark Brzezicki playing drums. As for Rob, his 2010 album ‘Botanic Dreams’ (as half of duo Different Frequencies) could not stop a gradual career crash. The market “That was the pinnacle,” Rob recalls. “Sony paid for us to go to Easy around TV ad music had changed drastically. FINANCE CORNER
B U S I N E S S F E AT U R E
What is the best mortgage? A lot of people are asking the advisers at Emerald Finance whether they should take a fixed rate at the moment and it’s a good question.
The future presents potential uncertainty. With Brexit looming, some clients are concerned about the impact this may have. Naturally we don’t know how severe the effect of Brexit will be but if the cost of living does rise as certain indicators suggest, then it would be prudent to fix in as many costs as possible before this happens. Stability in a time of instability is key for financial management.
HISTORICALLY, TRACKER RATES have been cheapest but now there is very little to choose between a fixed rate or a tracker, at least in terms of what your payment will be today. Furthermore, many have drifted onto their lender’s variable rate and as the payment has remained affordable, may have done nothing, when most could have paid less or secured a more affordable payment into the future.
In this sense a fixed rate is certainly attractive. Long term fixed rates of 5 years are incredibly competitive and, not only does it mean you can secure stable mortgage payments for the next 5 years, it also means you won’t have to remortgage again for that period. If rates rise, your payments will stay the same and if Brexit does have an impact it won’t affect your mortgage for 5 years.
So what’s the difference? A fixed rate sets your payments at a defined level for a set period of time, whereas a tracker rate is an interest rate that moves in line with the Bank of England Base Rate. A tracker rate can change although in recent years movements have been minimal. A variable rate is set by your lender which means that they decide when and how much it should change. Why change your deal? At the moment interest rates on offer are at some of the lowest levels we have seen. This offers an opportunity to take advantage of the best deals available. With over 120 lenders available at Emerald Finance, alongside specialist broker only lenders and exclusive deals, there are some fantastic schemes to be had.
Everyone’s situation is different, so for a personalised review to see if it’s time for you to FIX YOUR MORTGAGE RATE, pop into one of our shops at 10 Chapel Road or 77 Rowlands Road in Worthing, or call 01903 222940 to arrange an appointment at your home or our office. DADIFESTO
Big Danny style School is out and it’s a sort of a buzz, But back then I didn’t really know what it was...
LITTLE DID I KNOW HOW RIGHT Will Smith was when
he rapped these classic lines back in 1991 as the Fresh Prince together with Jazzy Jeff. The summer holidays are of course blissful when you’re a kid. A time to break the shackles of the routine and make some memories. But fast forward 28 years and if, like most of us, you’re a working parent, then the only buzz comes from that cataclysmic parental meltdown when the realisation that you have eight weeks of childcare, potential playdates and summer clubs to sort out hits you. Anyway, there I was talking to a friend the other day about holidays when we were kids and how our parents were a little bit more relaxed in their approach to organising structured summer activities.
It would look a bit like this: Out the door by 8am after bolting down some Weetabix, you’d grab your bike and 50p for lunch (if you were lucky), only returning at dusk when your belly Dan Flanagan rumbled so much that Father | Journalist | the adventures had to Part-Time Revolutionary stop for tea. When your mum or dad questioned you about your day, you’d reply along the lines of:
“Oh, not much. Me and the gang took a trip down to the deserted quarry to swim in the tepid foul-smelling water in our pants. “We built a rope swing out of abandoned tramps’ clothes and took turns pressuring smaller kids to jump off rotten branches into the deep parts of the water whilst doing impressions of Donald Pleasence. “After that we discovered a van full of stolen goods and tracked the crooks to their secret hideout. We battled them, A-team style, using makeshift weapons fashioned from magazines we found under the hedges down the park. (Actually, the magazines looked a lot like the ones I found in Dad’s shed hidden under the camping equipment we never use…) “We then gulped down 50p-worth of penny chews containing more sugar than the national annual production of Brazil. “We organised an impromptu game of 50-a-side football on the main road. All the rules were either made up on the spot, or decided by whoever was the toughest or owned the ball. We saw a couple of adults, but they told us to hop it. “Then the new kid, Daniel LaRusso, popped by and taught us some karate. Apparently since he moved here and got bullied, his frazzled single mum has been completely ok with him spending time with the old man that lives in the basement, exploiting his labour without even a risk assessment or insurance.” To which your mum would reply, “Oh really, dear, that sounds
nice. Do you want two or three portions of Angel Delight with your tea?” Until next episode, TotRockers and Dad La Soulies, keep it big like Ben. n

APPRENTICESHIPS Fancy being a crime scene photographer? Or a clay sculptor? Or an equine dentist? AN INCREASINGLY POPULAR study option,
apprenticeships are a great way to gain hands-on experience while studying towards an industry-recognised qualification.
B U S I N E S S F E AT U R E
There are, on average, 23,000 apprenticeship opportunities listed on the Find An Apprenticeship website every month, ranging from small local companies to large multi-nationals. Remember, when looking at apprenticeship opportunities, every role is different – even if you are studying the same course! All businesses have a different feel about them or different business culture, and this can affect which apprenticeship is right for you. Make sure you research both the apprenticeship qualification and the company itself, to make sure you’re the right fit for both. Want to find out more? Come and chat to local employers, apprentices and careers staff at the forthcoming Apprenticeship Fair. n

JOE BUNN’S BARDIC TRIALS
Bunting for the fête Summer. The peak time for fêtes in Britain. School fêtes, village fêtes, you know what I mean. A COCONUT SHY ON THE GREEN, a drum kit someone’s brought
along that costs 10 quid to have a go on, a tombola where all the prizes but one are terrible, all soundtracked by the voice of a local radio presenter who is muffledly announcing that “The knobbly dog show starts in 10 minutes”. Or maybe you don’t know what I mean, because I fear that fêtes are going out of vogue. A genuine fear, because a vital part of my childhood was spent trying to bat that rat as soon as it came out of the pipe.
Why don’t we modernise the fête, shrink it down from village size, and start holding ‘Street Fêtes’? The same concept as a fête, only on one street. There’s a plethora of talent in this town, and this would be a chance for everyone to show off what they’ve got. Set up a stall outside your house and flog away. And if you don’t feel like you’ve got a talent (you do, everybody does) then I’m sure you’ve got some worthless rubbish you could sell people. One day for you to lay out your stall, run some fun games, bake some food to share. If enough streets do it, it could actually become a little festival. Link them all up, and voila, people are coming to Worthing, tourism is up, and the Worthingites are making their own money along the way. In the Netherlands, 27 April every year is known as Koningsdag, or the King’s Day. Everyone dresses in orange, and there is a sort of nationwide flea market, where everyone sells their unwanted items. I’m proposing we do similar, only we dress in whatever colour we want, we sell things we’ve made as well, and we do it all for ourselves. I implore you Worthing, contact your neighbours, and arrange some Street Fêtes; you may be surprised at what people in your street have to offer. It’s our destiny, our meaning... ...our fête. n

THE WORTHING BYPASS
This column will not change your viewing habits When it comes to querying ethics, lifestyle choice and moral judgement, the question from Andrew Marr and his ilk to the multitude of jostling Conservative Party candidates should not have been, have you ever taken drugs? A far better line of enquiry to ascertain a person’s moral probity and intellectual rigour would have been to pose the far more pointed question, did you go for VHS or betamax? It is of course, a trick question. In spite of the subsequent propaganda that would suggest that anyone who opted for betamax was an unsuspecting idiot, the reality is that VHS was in fact the inferior technological offering at the time.

The myth in my family was that the old man was a technophobe and therefore chose the wrong package. Truth be told, I advised him on the superiority of the lesser known and soon-to-be-extinct alternative. It would not be the last time I screwed up, as he would happily remind me. The reason for seeking to redress the balance is that we are caught in a maelstrom of competing choices that seem to extract a polarity response from those in disagreement. It would appear that the collateral damage of Brexit has rendered us unfit to compromise on anything: it’s Netflix or 4DX, Amazon Prime versus the multiplex and Game of Thrones versus Shakespeare in the Park. Like a party full of pot smoking Tories, it’s all terribly irrelevant. I’m pro-choice. On everything. When Interstellar came out I had to watch it on IMAX. Same with A Quiet Place. You just have to watch that on the big screen in a packed cinema with the usual popcorn and pop-guzzling masses terrified to make a sound. The latest episode of Veep, on the other hand, will lighten a packed train journey to the big smoke whilst watching on your iPhone. Then there are the local delights. A trip to the Connaught or the Dome is worth its weight in gold to watch Aladdin with the kids (even if it wasn’t as good as the original). Takes me back to when the old man took me to watch my first ever film at the local picture house, with Christopher Reeve’s Superman blowing my tiny mind in a way that cocaine could never quite match. Or so I imagine. News of the return of outdoor cinema to Worthing saw my rose-tinted vista radiate a rainbow symphony and filled my heart with celestial joy by harking back to an age that never actually existed in this country. It’s what we at the Bypass call an alternative. Something different to the norm. An opportunity to bypass the mundane. The days of the bi-polar two-party system are happily coming to a close. It no longer has to be either/or. You can have everything. It would be beyond silly to open a multiplex in Worthing as it would destroy the ornate picture houses, but that doesn’t stop you from travelling to neighbouring shires for big screen IMAX blockbusters whilst savouring the historic shrines on your doorstep. Let’s not fall off the cliff-edge with betamax thinking, but engage with every device at our disposal, toking on all the while, if that’s to your fancy. I can only imagine. n
