BE A LOCAL TOURIST “I’M IN LOVE WITH CITIES I’ve never been to and people I’ve never met.” Misattributed to John Green, (The Fault in Our Stars), the quote was apparently written by a young independent blogger. We’re enamoured with the idea of travel — doing something fun and adventurous, discovering and seeing new things, and meeting different people. It all sounds so exciting. And it is.

Returns 1st & 2nd July to Beach House Grounds, Worthing The countdown is on; StreetVelodrome is revving into Worthing once again. Taking place on the weekend of 1 & 2 July, hundreds of people are expected to flock to Beach House Grounds for some sensational sporting action and family fun. This year’s event will see a guest appearance from Olympian Craig Maclean MBE. Along with Worthing’s very own Rowena Price who took to the track in 2015 with some rather unexpected results. Read her story: When StreetVelodrome came to Worthing in June 2015, sport enthusiast Rowena Price was intrigued to try it out. Since playing around on BMX’s and mountain bikes as a child in Worthing, Rowena does not consider herself a serious cyclist, rather someone who takes part in the odd cycling-related challenge from time to time. Having previously participated in the London to Brighton cycle event and Pedal Pace Paddle for charity, her personal expectations for the StreetVelodrome were low. Little did she know she was to become the fastest StreetVelodrome female amateur rider of 2015 and would be invited to spend the 2016 National Series riding as a Pro! In true underdog to hero fashion, Rowena was simply looking forward to experiencing a few laps on the pop-up velodrome. Rowena says “I remember feeling very nervous and apprehensive, but from the minute I arrived at the event I was made to feel very welcome. The track looked really daunting but as I watched the amateurs before me it was very clear
that the coaching was second to none and the whole crew were being so friendly and encouraging.” After a few laps of being coached herself, Rowena felt confident to give it her all when putting down her qualifying time, which was fast enough to see her through to the afternoon’s knock-out racing. In front of a large home crowd and TV crew, filming the action for BT Sport, Rowena competed against Pros and amateurs alike. She won the title of fastest amateur eventually being knocked out by series Pro winner, Jess Stone. Last summer she had a “dream come true” as she joined the StreetVelodrome family as a coach and Pro Rider in her own right; travelling around the UK to 9 different locations, starring in the StreetVelodrome television show. Rowena had to up her game to enable her to race against the Pro level cyclists and share her experience with other women trying it for the first time. Rowena finished the 2016 series in 3rd place with her best performance on home ground, in Worthing, where she collected the silver medal. Here are Rowena’s words about the 2016 series: HOW DID YOU BECOME A STREETVELODROME PRO RIDER? Having seen the 2014 series on the TV I was inspired to attend my local event in 2015. I loved every second of it and was invited to attend the finals at Broadgate where I won the 2015 amateur title. I was awarded the Pro contract as a result of my performances and have loved every second of it! HOW WAS YOUR 2016 SEASON EXPERIENCE? The StreetVelodrome family are a great team and so welcoming it has
been a very enjoyable experience throughout the series. I loved meeting so many new people and relished the challenges faced when coaching thousands of people with varied abilities and from all age ranges. WHAT WAS YOUR HIGHLIGHT? It has to be our home round in Worthing. Jack and I topped the table after the time trial setting ourselves up for a great days racing, winning silver, the best we achieved over the series! The support and the noise of the cheering during the racing was phenomenal. I would not have performed so well without them! WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE TO ANYONE THINKING OF APPLYING? Don’t hesitate! This year Worthing FC, Worthing RFC, Worthing Thunder, VC Jubilee and South Downs Leisure will all be offering visitors the chance to learn new skills and get active. Drop into the Educational Zone, or bring your bike along for bike marking (ID required). StreetVelodrome is not to be missed! Worthing Borough Council would like to thank Chandlers of Worthing, Lancing College Prep School, Worthing Homes, Southern Rail and Basepoint for supporting the 2017 event. Dad, do you really have to do that? DAD DANCING, A THING OF RIDICULE – but for me a thing of impending fear. Definition of dad dancing: NOUN [MASS NOUN] British informal Awkward or unfashionable dancing to pop music, as characteristically performed by middle-aged or older men: for the optimum embarrassment of offspring, dad dancing is best performed to REM’s Shiny Happy People.
…I intend to dance as much as possible, even if that means in the supermarket...” What is it about becoming a dad and losing your sense of rhythm? Everyone takes the mickey out of ‘Dad Dancing’, but hold on a minute; I’m a Dad and I love to dance. I mean I really love to dance and have done since I was a boy. Ever since the Breakdance craze knocked me and a million others like me off my feet and onto our hands/knees/heads and kitchen lino in carparks and shopping precincts up and down the country. Breakin’ gave me a sense of timing and rhythm. The ability to be able to move and spin around freely and gracefully without feeling like a “Norbert” on the many dance floors I have crossed paths with. Later on as a teenager, watching shows like ‘Dance Energy’ religiously exposed me to moves like “The Running Man” and “The Wop”. I would spend hours practising like
mad in my bedroom, ready to put on show at the weekly youth club and roller discos. Think of me as a slightly whiter, more ginger ‘Kid N’Play’ in the classic House Party movies and you have me to a tee. Then through my Soul and Funk days in my 20-30’s I would be dancing at any and every opportunity; never one to be shy of being the first on the floor. Since becoming a dad, I don’t really get the chance anymore to dance. My clubbing days are well over so the only opportunity I get to boogie is at our kitchen discos to BBC6 Music on a Saturday teatime. (Or when TotRockinBeats is happening. Well, it is my party, and I’ll dance if I want to..) I think it’s a case of “If you don’t use it, you lose it”. But what I have noticed is that both my wife and I have, for the most part, lost it.
fantastic seems to be gone. Now, it has been replaced with something odd-looking that my son looks down at scornfully, like we are embarrassing him. I can already hear myself in conversation, ten years down the line with my then teenager “You wait, son, I’ll tell you what a demon your old dad used to be on the dance floor” while his eyebrow arches higher than St Paul’s Cathedral as the cringe factor comes rolling in. But isn’t this very much part of being a parent and utterly embarrassing your kids at every given chance? That’ll teach the little buggers for thinking it is clever to wake us up at the crack of dawn. In the words of Confucius, payback is a btych. For now, I intend to dance as much as possible, even if that means in the supermarket, or on the way home, swapping the school run for ‘The Running Man’.
Now when my lass goes for it, rather Fellow WoMads (Worthing Mums & than the graceful soulful sister, I Dads) if you have been affected by spent our dating days going to gigs what you have read, don’t despair, with, she now goes into what has help is at hand. Book the babysitter been christened “The P.T.A (As in Photo: Loraine Perry now as here are some key dancing Parent Teacher Association) Boogie”. dates for your diary. For those of you that are unaware, it involves an awkward jazz, sidestepping, slightly out of time jiggle. Considering my wife was a professional ballet dancer with the Welsh National Opera and a veteran of the Cardiff Funk scene, she seems to be affected like me, with the curse of the “mum dance.” All our hard earned moves have flown out the window. Instead of lots of “Woo Yeahs” and “Get on downs” we hear “Ouch” and “I need to sit on down, my knees are killing me”.

Let’s band together in a sea of happy faces, a loving race and a thumping bass. Let us forget for a couple of hours that we are middle-aged and destined for a social life that involves going round each other’s houses or posting photos of our kids on Facebook. Cucumber sandwich, Aunt Augusta? AN OSCAR WILDE TEA OSCAR WILDE WROTE THE FIRST DRAFT of his funniest play, ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’, while he was staying with his family in Worthing in the summer of 1894. It’s all about young lovers, imperious aunts, missing handbags, lost babies… and the delights of a proper English tea. These are some of the highlights: Cucumber sandwiches – for Lady Bracknell (Aunt Augusta). Bread and butter: Gwendolyn (Lady B’s daughter) is ‘devoted’ to bread and butter. Cake – although it is ‘rarely seen in the best households’. And, of course, muffins, as scoffed by the two young protagonists Algernon Moncrieff and Jack Worthing. Now you can sample these teatime treats for yourself: join Worthing WOW at the Ardington Hotel, Worthing, for a special event celebrating the genius of Oscar Wilde. The speakers will be Antony Edmonds, author of ‘Oscar Wilde’s Scandalous Summer: The 1894 Worthing Holiday and the Aftermath’; and multi award-winning writer Neil Bartlett, author of ‘Who Was That Man?’
Antony, in conversation with director Melody Bridges, will talk about what Wilde did in Worthing during the summer of 1894, while Neil will talk about his personal experience of being closely involved with Wilde and his work throughout his own career. It promises to be an afternoon of delicious treats and exceptional conversation. Strictly limited seating, so get your tickets now. Date: Sunday 29th July from 2:30pm. Price £15 per ticket from the Ardington Hotel Call 01903 230451. Please note this event is a fundraiser for Registered Charity Worthing WOW.
COMPETITION TIME CALLING ALL PHOTOGRAPHERS!
After the successful 30th anniversary celebration of the film ‘Wish You Were Here’ in April, this month’s competition takes a similar theme. Send us a photo of a place you love, a place you wish you were right now. The deadline is July 29th and as usual please send your entries to submissions@worthingwow.co.uk.
COMPETITION WINNER CONGRATULATIONS TO PHILIPPA BOWER for winning our competition to write a story titled: ‘The Wrong Handbag’.
The Wrong Handbag JULIA STOOD BESIDE THE MANAGER and looked around the forlorn little room where her mother had spent the last two years of her life. She wrinkled her nose at the faint smell of urine and wished that someone would answer the bell that rang far away down the corridor. ‘I’m sorry for your loss, but we must clear the room for our next resident,’ said the manager, indicating the belongings that were piled upon the bed. Julia looked at the remnants of her mother’s life, at the yellowing photographs in their cheap wooden frames. Images of her father and mother stared back at her with herself, their only child, smiling at the camera. Later, her mother on her own, with Julia older and no longer smiling. The memories hurt and she said to the manager. ‘Give everything to charity.’ ‘Wait!’ The manager stepped forwards and searched through the pile. ‘She wanted you to have her handbag. She was very insistent. She would have given it to you earlier but you hardly ever came to visit.’ There was a hint of reproach in her voice. ‘I’m busy,’ said Julia. And it was true, life was hard and she had to work all hours to stay afloat. Besides she had little to say to the old woman who had been her mother. The manager found the handbag. It was made from hog skin and had gold-plated fittings. It had once been expensive – a gift from her father, but was now battered and worn. Julia glanced inside – it was empty. She threw it back onto the bed. ‘You can get rid of this as well.’ The manager was shocked. ‘Surely you want a memento of your mother.’ Julia stared at the bed. There was a small, black patent-leather bag she had given her mother one Christmas. It was unused, tissue paper still wrapped around the handle. ‘I’ll have this,’ she said, picking it out of the pile.

SEASONS

She walked away from the nursing home, feeling a weight lift from her shoulders as she left the past behind. A few weeks later she saw her mother’s old handbag again. It was on the front page of the local paper, being held aloft by a triumphant young woman, while in her Winter, other hand she waved a scratch card. Autumn. Above the picture was the headline Autumn is nice. BAGGING A BARGAIN!
You can find lots of different coloured leaves: brown, yellow, orange, red. Spring, Autumn, Winter, Summer. I like Summer. You can see friends and go out. Spring, Autumn, Summer, Winter, I like them all! by Cariad Parsonage (aged 7)
With trembling hands Julia picked the paper from the pile at the newsagents and scanned the story. The scratch card had been hidden in a pocket of the bag, which had been bought at a charity shop. It was worth half a million pounds. With it was a message from the unknown benefactor. ‘I am too old to enjoy these winnings, may they bring happiness to your life.’ The awful realisation dawned on Julia that for her there was no hope, no salvation: she had taken the wrong handbag.

My Community Matters Small is Beautiful Did you know you’ve just missed Small Charity Week, (19-24 June) which is a campaign first established in 2010 by a national charity called the Foundation for Social Improvement (FSI) to celebrate and raise the profile of the small charity sector? The majority of charities operating in the Worthing area are classified as small, due to their income. Always on a tight budget and often relying on dedicated volunteer
profit organisations including community interest companies (CIC) really do need your support because they support your local community – get involved by donating your time or money to help them to do more. We are one of a number of organisations in your area, working to support charities. Getting to know you So, with the support of Here & Now, each month we want to share this space with local not-for-profit organisations, providing them with a ‘voice’ and you with the opportunity to hear more about the valuable work they do. Nick Cook, Director at CircusSeen joins us this month.

support – they have little time or spare resource to actively fundraise. Focussing their efforts on supporting people in your local community every day – your neighbours, family and friends, their work is often self-funded and volunteer led. They make a real contribution – helping our statutory services meet the ever increasing demands in our town. So this year, in Worthing, let’s think about how we can really celebrate our local charities throughout the year. Share your ideas with us. Your local charities and not-for-

Earlier this year, we were pleased to make a commitment to work with the Worthing & Adur Chamber of Commerce to help promote Forward Steps to the local business community for the benefit of the local not-for-profit community. forwardsteps.org.uk provides businesses with a free CSR tool on which to post their offers such as staff time, meeting rooms, training sessions, free equipment for the benefit of local community groups. CircusSeen CIC teaches, performs and encourages the art of Circus Skills to people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds across Sussex. Along with the countless physical, mental and emotional benefits that circus skills bring, we also work with and teach meditation and well-being to create a stronger awareness, understanding and connection with our mind and body and the world around us.
Why is there a need? Over the past 8 years CircusSeen has run, we have seen an increased need for our services. Worthing is the 3rd most deprived Local Authority in West Sussex. Central Ward, where we are based, is Worthing’s largest ward, 2nd highest population density and the most deprived ward, 4th most deprived in West Sussex, with
We offer a space and service for people of all ages to use their time positively, creatively and therapeutically. To improve physically and mentally, strengthen family and community bonds and support social inclusion, diversity and employability.
How can people help your organisation to do more? It would be hugely advantageous if venues were able to offer a charitable rate for all not-for-profit, charitable organisations - allowing all of the incredible groups, supporting the people of every corner of Sussex, sustainability and longevity. But mainly, people can help by coming to play! Come to a workshop or fun day, reap the many benefits and spread the word!

Restaurant Review THE COW SHED A PLACE SO COOL, IT’S FRIESIAN... (I KNOW) A Sunday lunchtime found five of us in desperate need of sustenance and so a short walk along Worthing seafront brought us to The Cow Shed, opposite the Pier. With its eclectic decor and furniture, and a full frontage that gives you a window on the world going by, it looked a popular and interesting choice.

You take a menu, find a suitable table and sit to peruse, before going up to the somewhat funky bar to place your order. Everyone decided to have something different, and we thought we’d order a few lighter bites to start as well. Joe says that the sign of a good menu is that you will take quite a while deliberating over what to have, because of so many good choices on offer. This was certainly the case

here! We went for whitebait, hummus with pita & crudités and spicy chicken wings with slaw to start with. These arrived within quarter of an hour and were all really tasty. Our main choices included a lamb burger with tzatziki, breaded halloumi with tomato & mushroom, a tuna loin burger and the house special, The Cow Shed - a burger of gargantuan proportions. All were on challah buns and came with fries. The final choice of our party was fish & chips with crushed peas. There was a slight delay due to several tables ordering at once, but we were kept abreast of the situation and all tables received complimentary tortilla chips to keep us going! Everything was delicious and came with friendly, attentive service. Drinks-wise, there was a wide range of options, from locally-sourced
bottled beers, continental lagers on tap and a good choice of soft drinks and juices (I even had a quick flick through their cocktail menu and much of it looked and sounded enticing). For the amount of food, and its quality, The Cow Shed does represent good value and the ambience of the place is an added bonus. It appeals to families (with many of the tables taken by parents with their children when we were there) as well as having great potential as a place for evening drinks. It’s a place that’s almost too cool, but over the sun-drenched perfect Summer (which I am confidently predicting), expect The Cow Shed to be a bustling place at lunchtimes, and as night is falling...

TUNA STEAK + RORY’S MANGO SALSA If I see another burger, sausage or chicken leg I will turn vegetarian! The alternative I like is Tuna. Not the tinned stuff I give to the cat as a treat, but a nice fresh tuna steak, high in protein and low in fat.
MANGO SALSA INGREDIENTS TUNA STEAK INGREDIENTS
250g mango, diced 350g fresh, ripe tomatoes, diced 1 red onion, diced Few tablespoons freshly chopped basil 1 lime, juiced 1/2 red chilli, de-seeded, finely chopped (or 1 teaspoon Cajun spices) 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
Finely chop the mango, tomatoes, onion, and mix with the basil leaves and lime juice. Add chilli or Cajun spices, salt and pepper to taste. Place in a bowl and leave to chill – best served cold.
4 (175g) tuna steaks, 2cm thick Spray olive oil 1 clove garlic, finely chopped 1 teaspoon Cajun spices salt and ground black pepper to taste
Spray tuna steaks with olive oil and place in a large resealable plastic bag, add the garlic and shake in Cajun spices, salt and black pepper. Seal and refrigerate for 1 hour. (This can be prepared the night before to allow the flavours to soak in.)
Preheat barbecue for medium heat. Lightly oil the cooking grate and grill on the preheated barbecue for approx. 6-8 minutes, turning once. Transfer to a serving plate with your mango salsa. Serve immediately as is or with salad.

Isolation Chamber Vacation their wider significance; in the third of the four talks, a speaker from London’s School of Life will discuss isolation as a mental health issue; in the last of the four talks, Monday August 21st, the curator and one of the artists, Kirsty Buchanan, will explore the idea of solitude as a feminist issue.
Worthing Art Gallery Saturday 2 September 2017 WERE ASTOUNDED when we visited the Isolation Chamber Vacation exhibition on behalf of Here and Now readers. What hits you first are huge photographs by the very ‘now’ artist Juno Calypso from her ‘Honeymoon’ series, featuring the artist alone in a lavish suite of a honeymoon hotel; the images, posed and photo-
graphed by the artist herself, are strangely erotic and solitary. Curated by Sarah Kathryn Cleaver, the work of the eight women artists reflects her fascination with the ‘allure and horror of solitude’. This is clear in, for example, the large paintings of carpeted hotel corridors; we were reminded of ‘The Shining’!
It made us think of how a hotel room, down an anonymous corridor can offer a welcome solitude or loneliness in a strange town. All of the exhibits in this fantastic show are thought provoking, and the Art Gallery has organised a series of talks to enable visitors to discuss aspects of the works and
As a bonus, the curator chose some exhibits from our museum to be included in her exhibition, and there is a table of books exploring the idea of solitude and the outsider. We were interested to see ‘Rosemary’s Baby’, ‘The Little Prince’, and ‘Solaris’ alongside ‘The Invention of Solitude’ (for Paul Auster fans). Definitely some titles there to check out at the Library. Not only has the Art Gallery organised talks within the exhibition, but, as a new venture, has teamed up with the Studio at

Crafty 5th Birthday Plans IF YOU HAVEN’T BEEN TO WORTHING ON THE 5TH NOVEMBER, then you’re in for a big surprise! For the last 4 years Worthing has celebrated the 5th November with a very special Fireworks Festival and Lantern Parade. Tide of Light is already starting its plan for its 5th Birthday and recently won the Sunny Worthing Event of the Year Award. Jess Estcourt, Community Group representative says - with 2 awards behind us and our fantastic community turning out year on year, we are planning a great party for 2017 and have been working with some of the town’s best event organisers to offer something a bit different for this year. In order to prepare for the event, work behind the scenes starts now in designing and organising the Schools Activities. Each year in the Autumn term the Tide of Light artists visit local First Schools to make lanterns for the parade in November. In the last 4 years over
500 lanterns have been made in First Schools across the area with another 350 kits being given to Reception age children. Springfield First School in Sackville Road have been part of the making since the beginning of Tide of Light and each year one year group get the opportunity to make fully lit creations. ‘’The children love turning milk bottles into birds, and lampshades into jelly fish and what better way to celebrate the darker nights with your very own lantern, it’s a lovely way to get the littler ones involved’’ Parent Springfield School Roy Kelf and Claire Lemmon are the project’s Artist in residence and not only help with the school activities but also run the night workshops which allow a further 500 children to make their lanterns free of charge. All lanterns are made out of recycled objects like milk bottles and are a great way to show children how to make amazing creations out of something ordinary.
Roy Kelf also added: We work with the Summer Parade to recycle their superb large structures to give them another opportunity to be seen in the Autumn. This year we are also collaborating with the Ice Rink to showcase these structures in an outdoor illuminated display.

All car parks and pay-for-parking areas to be FREE or £1.00 per day parking on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. My only ruling that the cars are to be full of people… think retail carpooling. That would bring a lot of people into the town centre. Towns like Worthing need people to visit or we’ll all find ourselves going to the retail parks. What would you donate to Worthing Museum? One of my very loud Playdays Shirts and a pair of Doctor Marten Boots. What event did you last pay to go to in Worthing? Saw the animation, SING! at the Dome. South Downs walk, Kite Surf or, Avoid exercise at all cost? Bring on the South Downs! So there you have it. Who would have known eh?

Hold onto your bucket hats and dig out your Joe Bloggs gear… a taste of ‘Madchester’ will be coming to the south coast next month. St Paul’s in Worthing is celebrating the biggest ‘baggy’ tracks from an era that saw Manchester become the coolest city on God’s Earth. Not only can fans expect a DJ set from Bez, the maniacal maraca-shakin’ past member of the Happy Mondays, but also a performance from Tom Hingley (exInspiral Carpets frontman) and the Kar-Pets playing all the hits from the band’s height of fame. Thom Milner-Smith from Atom and promotor of the Madchester Night explains why he and local venue promotor, Mark Knowles, decided to bring Madchester to Worthing: “In the wake of two acid house-addled second summers of love, guitar bands loosened up to a stoned ‘funky drummer’ groove,” he says. “Music exploded in Manchester as the loved-up generation embraced ‘baggy’ making the late 80s and early 90s a golden moment.” The term ‘baggy’ is in reference to the oversized garments on trend at the time. Was it a girl or a boy under all that extra material? No one could be sure. T-shirts emblazoned with the famous 80s slogan
‘And on the sixth day, God created MANchester’ were selling by their hundreds each week. Such was the impact of the Madchester scene, Madonna and French fashion designer, Jean-Paul Gaultier were both photographed wearing one too. As I write this, Manchester has been on everyone’s mind recently for a very different reason. News reports are coming in that council staff are attempting to clear away the thousands of flowers, candles and messages placed in St Ann’s Square in the city. The area became a shrine to the 22 people who lost their lives in the terrorist bomb attack at Ariana Grande’s Manchester Arena concert on 22 May 2017. The overwhelming defiance from the people of Manchester following this tragic event has been powerful. Home to an astonishingly diverse population, there’s been a united front from all corners of the community with a very clear message that this kind of hate won’t tear them apart. For Madchester there inevitably had to be the ultimate come down. But the diverse community in the city today is in part due to the legacy left behind from a time when barriers between the unlikeliest of allies fell away – up north, down south, black, white, gay, straight – everyone joined together in a common goal to indulge in a hedonistic party lifestyle 24/7. The Northern Quarter and Gay Village owe their very existence to the long-term impact of the Madchester wave. Thatcher’s assault on the traditional industries in the north which caused mass unemployment and misery in the 70s and 80s resulted in that irrepressible Mancunian spirit to rise, create ground-breaking music and dance out its frustrations in a packed warehouse while defiantly wearing day-glo. For one crazy, sweaty, melon-twisting night, that irrepressible Mancunian spirit will be steaming rolling into Worthing. S’koolFest Review AS PREDICTED IN THE PAGES OF THIS VERY MAGAZINE, our town and area’s very finest pop music performers, rappers, singersongwriters and bands all played a one night festival on the 31 May at the Pavilion Theatre celebrating great music - and the fact that they were ALL under 18, and some were even as young as 12! It was a first for new Worthing School, Bohunt, whose Head of Music George Imbert said after the show: “It was amazing to see such a huge amount of talent from schools across the local area, each one
…give pupils the time and space and they create excellence ...” unique in their own way. It just goes to show, if you give these pupils the time and space to create something, they end up creating excellence!”
This Worthing-originated yearly event started in 2010, and the questions always asked by the audience are “Where do you get these amazingly talented children?” and “What do they do next?” The first question is very easy to answer: our schools are full of musical talent, tended by their Music teachers. The second question we can answer here. The S’koolFest Choir, has been asked to perform on July 8 at the Spring Into Soul concert at St Paul’s. This rocking band SpeakerFreak (named on the day of the show!) combined guitarist/vocalist Jude and Max from Bohunt with Sion School’s Max on drums. They won the Ready to Fly prize, which means three days in the studios at Northbrook MET recording their EP, which will then be released with help from the Music Business Degree staff and students. Lily from Davison School sang her song written for her Music GCSE. Lily won Best Original Song prize and this ukulele donated by We Have Sound Guitars in Royal Arcade Worthing. Lily picked up her uke prize from co-presenters Molly, Boudicca and Christelle. Amy from Davison won Most Emotional Performance, and will have a day in Northbrook MET studios to record her song.
PEOPLE | PLACES Shamann was the very first rapper to appear at S’koolFest. His track is already released on Soundcloud. Astonishingly authentic Blues Band Axis, from Steyning Grammar earned a day in the studios during the summer. Eden from Durrington, here performing with her brother Elijah won the prize for Best Cover for her version of Amy Winehouse’s “Love Is A Losing Game”. St.Andrews School band “Sonrise” were the youngest band of the night at only 11 and 12, but the audience and judges loved the trumpet solo from Michael. Colroy, drummer with St.Andrews band “Sonrise”. Keyboard player William is like the rest of the band still only in year 7!
Holly from Davison accompanied herself on piano, with backing vocals from songwriting prizewinner Lily. Davison’s Elise and Katy returned after appearing at last year’s with improved confidence and even more musical ability. They held the stage impressively. They along with all the year’s performers will have a day of music activity designed individually to help them all develop their talent at Northbrook MET during the coming holidays. While S’koolFest Alumni such as High Tyde are now touring Japan, and The Ferns have released their first pop video, it’s inspiring to see the new talent coming through. Don’t miss next year’s show.

WHAT’S ON IN WORTHING A Night with Rebecca Ferguson Friday 11 August Assembly Hall, Worthing BRITISH SINGER REBECCA FERGUSON shot to fame after being a runner up on the seventh series of hit ITV talent show, The X Factor. That was back in 2010 and since then the Liverpool born songwriter has gone on to sign for major record labels. Her first album, Heaven, released in 2011, was a commercial and critical success, reaching number 3 in the UK Charts. The album was co-written in full by Ferguson and went twice platinum in the UK thanks to singles like ‘Nothing’s Real But Love’, which was a hit all over Europe. Taking influence from the likes of hit singers Amy Winehouse, Aretha Franklin and Kings of Leon, she has been nominated for two MOBO awards as well as an MTV Europe Award. Ferguson has made it across the pond in the US thanks to touring over there more than once, and she followed up her fine debut with two more albums, ‘Freedom’ and ‘Superwoman’. Her blues, soul and R&B style is popular with a wide range of music lovers and her heartfelt vocal delivery really stands her out in a class of one. Always busy writing new music or touring the world, Rebecca Ferguson is one of the UK’s brightest pop stars and is as loved by critics as she is her fans.

Get Your Events Listed Double Box = 40mm x 105mm from only £30+VAT per month Hi there guys! I’m Connor, and I’ve just started working with Here & Now doing the music listings. I’m a musician and producer, one of the live sound engineers at Bar 42, and one of the admins on the Worthing Original Music Facebook page. In this issue, I’ve tried to give an indication of genre where appropriate, although not all musicians have social media presences that make it easy to ascertain what kind of music they play!
Joe Bunn’s Bardic Trials I WAS ONCE SAT OUTSIDE an awful satsuma coloured bar on Worthing seafront and a Google van with a camera on top drove past. I got thoroughly excited. At last, I would be world famous. My blurred out face plastered on a photo of a street that someone might see when they go on a digital walk around Worthing. What could be better than finding a snap of yourself on that most infamous of all maps? People would recognise me in the streets.
Also important to me is placing real emphasis on the original music that comes out of Worthing, uncovering some of the live music gems in the area that deserve your support. This space will be taken up by me on a bimonthly basis, so watch out for short reviews and previews on gigs, albums, and all things musical arising from our little seaside secret… GET YOUR EVENTS LISTED for free online and in print: visit hereandnowmag. co.uk or email me your music events at music@hereandnowmag.co.uk

‘I saw you on streetview. Can I get your autograph?’ The adulation would be unending. Sadly, though, I never showed up on Streetview. But that is where I got the inspiration for this month’s Homework: Make a user generated version of Streetview. There’s 104,600 residents in Worthing. It has an area of 32.37 km2. Using some slightly dodgy mathematics, we can work out that for us to cover the entirety of Worthing, each resident (including babies) would only need to take a picture of ten metres’ worth of town. And of course, put yourself in the pictures. Whether it’s you standing making a face, your family posing awkwardly, or whether you decorate the 10 metres with ribbon, or knitting, or pictures of your face. After all, you are all Worthing’s landmarks. Then we’ll simply ask a technological whiz kid to stitch them all together. Simple. I call it Joe-gle Luteview.
Screen Nights on the Sofa WHAT FILMS TO WATCH when you’re sharing the sofa with…your cat. Here’s our top three favourite films to enthral you and your feline friend. Settle back, phones on silent and paws out the popcorn.
Breakfast at Tiffany’s
Audrey Hepburn plays the flighty female lead Holly Golightly, who isn’t all that
she seems. Her ginger tom called Cat may not have the most original name, but his scene stealing moments will be ones you and your moggy mate will remember. Fans of big cat movies will enjoy the fact this was directed by Blake Edwards, who brought The Pink Panther to our screens.
A Cat in Paris
Nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Feature of 2012. Dino is by day a mild-man-
nered house cat, and by night, a burglar’s sidekick. Keep the catnip at hand, this hand drawn divertissement is more Reservoir Cats than ooh la la so.
The Aristocats
A slice of classic Disney, this musical cartoon caper is the classic tale of love across the
divides. And inheritance fraud. Just with cats. The furry one curled up on your lap is bound to be purring along when Ev’rybody Wants to Be a Cat comes on.

HERE’S SOME HAPPY NOTES from folk who want to thank strangers in and around Worthing that have helped them in some way: Huge thanks to the lovely lady on George V Avenue who picked up the £50 I dropped near the Lions shop. Thank you for returning it to me. The cash was for the equally lovely hairdresser in Diamond Cut. Frances Thank you to the shop assistant in New Look for telling me I looked great in cheap clothes. Saved me a fortune, they’ll never know. Marie, Offington Thank you to the taxi driver who helped me carry my shopping bags in when he saw I was struggling getting up the path – averted a grocery related catastrophe. Sue Thanks to a true gentleman at the garden centre in Findon Valley today for gallantly pointing out I had my skirt tucked in my knickers – saved my blushes! DANCE
Here & Now’s Guide to Worthing’s Swing Dance Scene
THERE’S NEVER BEEN A BETTER TIME
to learn to dance in Worthing. As the town continues to grow and thrive, the dance scene here has flourished with classes and events going on to suit any taste. One area of dance that has gained popularity over the last few years is swing dance and dances that have evolved from it. Swing dance encompasses many styles such as Lindy Hop, Balboa, Rock ‘n’ Roll and Jive. And in turn Jive takes many forms, so you might hear it called Modern Jive, Ballroom Jive, Ceroc or Le Roc! Confusing? Well to help out here’s our brief guide to swing dance with a little bit of history and where you can find it going on in our area.
Lindy Hop
Lindy Hop evolved in Harlem in the 1920s and 30s with the jazz music from that era. It combined the improvisation of African-American dancing with the more formal structure of the European partner dancing to form a relaxed, social partner dance. It includes Charleston steps (that you’ll have seen if you watch strictly) and has plenty of opportunity to break away from hold to improvise to the syncopated beats of swing. Lindy Hop is a fun to learn, relaxed social dance. In Worthing, St Paul’s Art Centre now hosts a regular event called The Sunday Swing with live music from local band ‘Swing Sensation’, welcoming everyone from complete beginners to more experienced swing dancers and includes a taster class for those wanting to try it out - the next event is on Sunday 30th July. Savoy Swing run well-structured foundation classes and the occasional intermediate class in Worthing.
is danced to faster music in a closer embrace with more body connection emphasising weight shift. It’s evolved to incorporate other swing moves like turns and open hold moves, although much less than Lindy Hop or Jive. The excellent Eighbeat Jive hold regular Balboa Sunday workshops in Washington.
includes Ballroom Jive. This competitive version is usually danced in a bouncy style, very upright with lots of kicks. You’ll have seen this type of jive on Strictly! Those with some ballroom dance experience can learn this type of jive at lots of venues including Keene Dance Studio on Tarring Road.
1940s and 50s Jive
Modern Jive
American soldiers brought Lindy Hop to Europe around 1940, where this dance swiftly found a following among the young. In the US the term ‘swing’ was commonly used and the term ‘jive’ was adopted in the UK. Jive quickly became enormously popular and developed into a simpler dance with less innovation, more repetition and lots of spins.
Modern Jive (sometimes referred to by the brand names Le Roc & Ceroc) was developed in the UK in the 1980s out of a want to simplify the dances that evolved from swing and adapt to new popular music. It has developed into an arm-led social dance with no specific footwork pattern therefore making it easier to learn. It has become very popular due to the easy patterns and social aspect of modern jive evenings.
1940s and 50s jive classes are held at East Worthing Community Centre on Thursday evenings by Brighton Jive and their ‘Honey Hush Club’ is held on Tuesdays at Durrington Working Men’s club, providing a great opportunity for social dancing.
Rock n Roll
The fabulous JivePlay hold weekly classes at St Paul’s Art Centre on Wednesdays and Rocsters can be found at Worthing College on a Tuesday. Jagjive host occasional Sunday events at Worthing College combining modern jive, swing and blues free-style.
Rock ‘n’ Roll is yet another variation. As the music changed from the syncopated big band swing to the steady rock ‘n’ roll beat, so the dance adapted to fit. In the UK it became a fairly simple dance with the man tending to stay on the spot and letting the lady show off. Join ‘Shoreham Rock n Roll’ for monthly dances at the Shoreham Centre.
So if you fancy trying some swing dance check out any of these classes or a good place to start is to mention this article at St Paul’s Sunday Swing on 30 July for half price entry and a taste of the fun of swing!
Balboa
Ballroom Jive
Balboa is another swing dance that originated in the 1920s that is gaining popularity again. Balboa
In 1960 a new category of competition dances was put together called “Latin & American”, which

AND FINALLY
The Worthing Bypass
This Column Will Not Change Your Timetable JUST WHEN THE WORLD SEEMS TO BE TURNING DARKER than a Harold Pinter play as politicians go off their collective rockers, the media starts devouring its own entrails for self-entertainment and the future appears to have all the joie de vivre of Edvard Munch’s The Scream, so life comes along to tickle the cockles and lighten the load. Southern Fail: The Musical is arriving at a theatre near you. Yes, yes. yea heart-felt, ironyinfested humourists, we are winning. The Ubiquitous Hack loves nothing more than to highlight the unsung highlife of Worthing and it’s surroundings to friends and startled strangers alike, regaling them with stories of a rich theatre heritage dating back to the 1800s and tall tales of Oscar Wilde living it up large in one of Worthing’s Weatherspoons. Indeed, I often cite the reason for settling on this most illustrious stretch of the south coast as being the unrecognised cultural heritage lurking behind the beach huts and candy floss. This is a lie but one that like a politician’s blinkered, belligerent rejection of reality has gradually ceded to truth as I begin to believe it. So it was with your average Prime Minister’s unerring sense of indignant self-righteousness that I welcomed news of Southern Fail: The Musical. Unlike the worst rail service in the history of civilisation, it cannot fail.
not have the catchy zing of Southern Fail but our cause has not caught the zeitgeist and lest we forget, we’re not entirely sure what the cause is. Sounds like one of those parliamentary parties again. Like every other largely unsuccessful journalist, there is also the litany of creative failure to reflect upon, inhibiting my every paragraph, sentence and indeed, worm. How can we forget Donkeys on Ice, a sure-fire hit that could not fail to register with Worthing’s Collective Consciousness (since overtaken by the Worthing Knitting Circle, a ruthless collective that also threatens our local chamber of commerce, I kid you not)? For those who are not regular readers of the Worthing Bypass firstly a) shame on you b) you’re not wrong. Secondly, Donkeys on Ice was in all lost humility a genius concept aspiring to raise Worthing’s profile and better utilise the annual ice rink at Steyne Gardens, risking graceless ass limbs rather than reckless kid’s asses. I gave that idea free to the new Mayor and not a word of thanks since. Total silence. Tchh.
…anticipating crying with laughter in torrents swift enough to wash away the years of bitterness, recrimination and lost youth…
To be fair, in hindsight some of those creative urges have lacked common sense. Calling for a campaign to install a lighthouse on Highdown Hill admittedly lacked logic, foresight, imagination and, to be perfectly honest, integrity. At the time it seemed like a good idea. Like Southern Rail running a train service. Like Trumpton running a country. Like Boris running anything… Before penning this salutation to the creative genius of others I had assembled a Brio train set with my three-year-old granddaughter under extreme pressure from her unstoppable impatience and the one-yearold sister tyrant-in-training who insisted on ramming the construction with a push-chair. Still, we pulled it off and that track gave many a minute of unrestrained joy before the inevitable meltdown crushed all inferior emotional responses with the ruthlessness of the Worthing Knitting Circle on a rampage.
We’re already tittering at the title and anticipating crying with laughter in torrents swift enough to wash away the years of bitterness, recrimination and lost youth. If only someone would do the same for our hallowed parliamentary parties. Tories: The Tragedy has a certain ring to it, as does Love Labour’s Lost. The Liberal Democrat Disappearance whodunit would win hands down. How about Sense and Sensibility and the UKIP Anomaly? I could go on and unfortunately all of the aforementioned inevitably will. Whilst wishing sell-out attendance and a slew of encores to all upcoming productions, the Ubiquitous Hack cannot help but think he’s missed a trick here. The Worthing Bypass: Missed Opportunities and Deadlines might

And so it seems to me that many years ago some stuffy suits in a windowless bunker decided to assemble a train set with lots of miniature drivers and guards and passengers but ran out of pieces and patience so decided to gradually downscale, knocking off the guards first, then the passengers and finally the drivers. That would seem illogical to you and I, but that’s as good an explanation I can come up with for the devolution of Southern Rail. I hope you enjoy this and many other brilliant productions coming our way this summer and do not fear, there will be no Worthing Bypass: The Opera or similar proposition. I’m too busy rebuilding the rail track wreck and ensuring these measly words are spelt rightly and orderly arranged, just like a Trumpton tweet.
