ARTS | CULTURE

A Platform for Original Music EVERYONE LOVES A CLASSIC SONG. We choose our special favourite anthems to celebrate our weddings, to help say goodbye to loved ones at funerals, to urge on our sports teams. A great classic song can wrap up how we feel about life in a few words and a melody. A great song can lit us up, or calm us down. Classic songs have been writen here in Worthing or by its locals. Just one example: Rod Stewart’s “Maggie May” was co-writen with Marin Quitenton while he lived here in the 70s. Six years ago, hardly anyone had ever heard an Ed Sheeran song. As I write this, Ed is talking on Desert Island Discs, he’s the best selling songwriter in the UK, and any wedding DJ will tell you “Thinking Out Loud” is now the most likely choice for a bride and groom’s First Dance. But where do these great songs come from? It’s easy to forget that

every classic song, from Elbow pulling those curtains wide, to Queen, telling us “We Are The Champions”, to James Brown yelling “I Feel Good!” started life as a new, original song that nobody had heard before. There is an army of songwriters in the UK, some aspiring and some already successful to some degree, and a surprising number of them live here in Worthing. While the town’s many pub-based Open Mics will occasionally feature an original song between songs more popular with the drinkers, up to now there hasn’t been an atempt to acively

feature and focus new, original music outside of the iconic Bar 42, which has always featured new bands and playing new songs. This is changing since musician Bob Burke and his son Connor moved to Worthing last Summer from the New Forest. Connor Burke is a Music Technology student at the new world-class studios at Northbrook MET. He plays bass and guitar and already has years of experience performing and doing live sound engineering at gigs. Connor is also one of the admins on the new ‘Worthing Original Music’ Facebook group, a music networking group speciically aimed at Original Music. The group already has 460 members, including composers, promoters, venues and fans, and has been acive in the real world too. There have been two public meeings, and there’s now an established monthly Worthing Original Music showcase at St Paul’s

from June (check the lisings in this magazine for the next one!). ”We aim to provide a plaform for discussion on muliple issues surrounding how to publicise and moneise original music in all its forms and at all levels, staging regular meeings around Worthing. Our page features people looking for feedback on their demos, and also encourages promoters and musicians looking for original bands. We now have a logo for venues, promoters and arists to use on posters and online promoion, Connor has just started an internship

with Here & Now magazine doing the gig lisings from the July issue onwards. “I met with Here & Now’s editor, Frances ater I had heard that she would like some help from young people on the magazine. With my connecion to Worthing Original Music, this is a good opportunity to tweak how music sits in the lisings and boost the number of people that interact with the Worthing music scene. Among my ambiions for the lisings are to categorise them so that anybody in the mood for original music can see what is happening in Worthing straight away, without needing to put in extra work to ind out what bands do what kind of material. In a similar vein, I would also like to introduce the idea of genre to the lisings, giving any potenial audience a clear idea of what sort of music they can expect from a gig. There’s nothing like going to a Progressive Metal gig with an Acousic support act!” You will increasingly see posts, posters, lyers and more with the circular, white on black Worthing Original Music logo. You will also see the logo in this magazine. A show or Open mic using this logo guarantees that the music you hear will be new and original. It’s just up to you to decide if you think these new songs writen and tested in Worthing are any good! Songwriters need to try those songs out on audiences. This, people of Worthing, is where you come in! The Worthing Original Music group is looking to give your ears far more opportuniies this year to hear new songs, and your reacions can either

promote the stand-out talent, or send those who don’t stand out yet back to the drawing board to re-crat, re-work, or simply write further new atempts to win your love. An audience of friends at an Open Mic can be kind, but songwriters performing to a live audience soon learn the diference between what’s ‘ok’ and songs that really engage people’s atenion. And although we’ve mostly been talking about ‘songs’, the group also features any kind of original music, from symphonies to soundtracks, to experimental electronic bleeps!

…the Worthing Original Music Group is looking to give your ears more opportunities... Worthing has only just recently given birth to the internaionally successful Royal Blood and hot on their heels, High Tyde, neither of which built their fan bases playing covers. There’s plenty more aspiring young Worthing kids and adults here vying to get up there too. Have a look through our lisings, pick an event, come and hear them and give your verdict. We hope you’re up for the challenge.

We want to excite the people of the town, and to create memories for everyone, especially for the youngsters of the area whether they play football or not.” With a passion and commitment for developing youth, The Worthing FC Development Centre also provides top class coaching every week for almost 200 players in Development and Elite groups from U7s to U16. COMMUNITY

4 Ways to Get Involved

Community Matters COMMUNITY IS A FUNNY OLD THING, found in the strangest of places. Our communiies are where we feel we belong. They can consist of the people in our street, colleagues at work, parents at your kid’s school, a local church or mosque, and even online. A sense of community is part of our human need to belong and to be cared about. We have a group of people who look out for us and we look out for them. So here are 4 ways to get involved in Your Community:

1) Befriend your local park. Those of us with children will be grateful

for the joy of playgrounds. Dogwalkers will meet in the park to discuss their pet pooches’ quirky habits. Fitness fanaics will jog through, accompanied by soundtracks that spur them on to run that litle bit further. Many of our parks now have a ‘Friends Of’ group that works with our council to look ater the park, and fundraise for any equipment that is needed. To get involved, give your local park a Google and see what is going on!

2) Say hello to your neighbours. Outside eaing is oten a great chance

to say hello to your neighbours that you haven’t seen all Winter. The Great Get Together from Friday 17 – Sunday 19 June is an ideal opportunity to bring out your trestle tables and organize a street party.

3) Volunteer. If you have a bit more ime on your hands, why not

volunteer with one of the great local organisaions already working in your community? For example:

The Empty Plate Café in Durrington is a ‘pay as you feel’ café.It uses food that is past its sell by date, but sill perfectly edible, to make delicious meals for anyone who needs a hot meal and is struggling to make ends meet. • The Worthing Churches Homeless Project works with some of the most vulnerable members of our community, providing shelter and helping people back on to their feet.

4) Get creaive in the community! Everywhere I look, there are groups of people celebraing their creaive talents: singing, wriing, reading, paining, dancing, gardening. Check out our lisings pages and local FB groups for more info.

Volunteers’ Week: 1-7 June 2017

Volunteering really does make a diference to individuals and communities... and they are responsible for the legal compliance and good pracice of the charity. It can be a demanding, strategic, role, and one that is oten undertaken quietly behind the scenes.

Julie Hunt, Partnerships Manager @ Voluntary Acion Worthing (VAW) shares some exciing informaion for volunteers, not-for-proits and anyone thinking of volunteering in our community.

volunteering was esimated to be £22.6bn in 2015. (ncvo.org)

…if you are a trustee... this new initiative is a big thank you from the VAW!

Volunteering really does make a diference to individuals and communiies, from improving the environment we live in, spending ime with those who may otherwise be lonely and contribuing to a range of other essenial services and support.

Hey – do you know about Volunteers’ Week (1-7 June)? It’s a naional campaign which runs annually celebraing the real diference local people make through their volunteering. Locally there are simply hundreds of you providing your ime, skills and experience in a wide variety of roles to help our member organisaions, and the many not-for-proit organisaions across our wonderful town, do more. Naionally, An esimated 14.2 million people formally volunteered at least once a month in 2015/16 and the value of formal

Many local people also volunteer as trustees. Trustees run your local chariies

VAW wants to support our local trustees to make their role a litle easier and as part of Volunteers Week, and as a git to all our local trustees, we are to launch a brand new Trustee Club for Worthing. Funded by the Sussex Community Foundaion, it will be launched in the summer, and will provide free networking events, peer support and feature free masterclasses by MHA Carpenter Box, our delivery partners.

It’s essenially a free membership club with a regular newsleter and access to free resources speciically focused on good governance. If you are a trustee, or

know someone who is, tell them about this new iniiaive because it is for them – to say a big thank you from VAW! For info and details of how to sign-up contact me at partnerships@vaworthing.org.uk

How can you get involved? See Worthing.interests.me - a free to use community hub for not-for-proit lisings in Worthing. Armed Forces Weekend

Steyne Gardens 24 & 25 June 2017

This has been called Armed Forces Day for some ime now.

WORTHING COMBINED EXSERVICES ASSOCIATION is an umbrella organisaion run by and for our various ex-service associaions and our veterans. Its purpose is to help and protect our smaller, dwindling associaions, and help put on remembrance services. For many years, we held a drumhead service on Steyne Gardens, then in 2005 we helped the Borough Council and Rotary run a weekend of events to celebrate the 70th anniversary of VE/VJ Day. We ran the Sunday event which included our drumhead service followed by a promenade concert by the Worthing Symphony Orchestra. This went so well, we have done so ever since. When the government decreed 27 June to be Veterans Day we were already onboard and ready to go.

On Saturday we aim for fun. We have stalls, displays, a stage with entertainments, including school children, military vehicles, ofstage entertainments, hot food and a ‘NAAFI’ selling hot and cold drinks, and ice creams. The Coastguard helicopter and Shoreham Lifeboat will do an ofshore Air/Sea Rescue exercise between 12-1pm, so long as one or other is not called away for the real thing! And although not guaranteed, we aim to have a lypast. On Sunday we hold our drumhead service. Regimental and Corps standards are consecrated in church and follow their servicemen and women into the ield of batle. As there are rarely churches around, the Regimental or Corps drums have for centuries been piled up and covered by the standard/s

to become an altar. As a mater of interest, you may have seen that in Afghanistan they piled up tyres instead of drums. For our drumhead service we are using the historical drums of the Royal Sussex Regiment (now dissolved into the Princess of Wales Royal Regiment aka The Tigers). These are laid just before the service and when the Associaion standards march on those that form C.E.S.A. are laid on the drums as in the picture on the back page of this magazine. The drumhead is atended by the Lord Lieutenant, High Sherif, Mayor and Mayoress of Worthing, Mayors and Council Chairmen from all over West Sussex and beyond, many local V.I.P.s, serving personnel, veterans and cadets. Plus, of course, our community and visitors. All are welcome and there are plenty of chairs.

Love your Hospital

COMMUNITY

A Crowdfunding Vision LOVE YOUR HOSPITAL CHARITY, the dedicated charity for Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundaion Trust, has launched an appeal in support of a state-of-the-art eye care unit set to revoluionise the future of eye care in West Sussex. At present, the trust’s eye care team sees more than 30,000 paients each year and demand for eye care in the local area coninues to increase year-on-year. Love Your Hospital, hopes the ‘Our Vision, Your Sight’ appeal will raise funds ensuring the high spec ophthalmology unit, Western Sussex Eye Care | Southlands, will have the best, most modern equipment for paients when it opens at Southlands Hospital in Shoreham on 27 June. As part of the appeal, the charity has started its very irst crowdfunding campaign with a £35,000 fundraising target, and is calling on the local community to show their support. The funds raised could help in providing items outside of

core NHS funding such as the purchase of a microscope and scanner which provides clinicians with a detailed three-dimensional image of the reina. Amanda Tucker, head of the charity, said: “The quality of our vision has a direct efect on our quality of life. Restoring a person’s sight can mean they regain their independence and control over their lives again.” Crowdfunding relies on a large community of supporters around the campaign sharing the project link, content and fundraising updates on social media and via email with friends, family and followers, as well as making a one-of or a regular donaion. Former paient, Daphne, 75, who underwent an eye procedure at Worthing Hospital, says the care she received not only signiicantly improved her sight, but profoundly changed her life. She said: “One of the happiest days of my life was

when I saw my husband’s face for the irst ime in years thanks to an innovaive new treatment I received at Worthing Hospital. If it hadn’t been for the cuing edge treatment carried out by Western Sussex Hospitals, I wouldn’t be able to see today.” As part of the campaign, Love Your Hospital are also hosing an Eyeconic Ball

on Saturday 17 June at The Grand, Brighton.

Keeping up Ap-pier-ances

...at the Southern Pavilion IT WAS A RELATIVELY SUNNY DAY, not that surprising for Sunny Worthing, and we fancied walking on water - so Joe and I made our way down the recently-announced runner-up in Pier of the Year. We were going to the end, to the Southern Pavilion for a spot of aternoon tea. En route, Joe insisted we pause at the amusements, where a mere £1 pot of tuppences can enthral a 14year old for a litle while... games of random chance giving the illusion that you can display almostsupernatural skills of dexterity and strategic thinking. Pockets bulging with prize ickets, we approached the iconic art-deco building at the end of the pier and were amazed, as always, at how good it looks and how great the transformaion from faded nightclub to stylish venue has been. The main atrium, with the galleries above, takes you back to an era of Palm-Court orchestras, waitresses in white hats and aprons and dainty morsels on iered stands. We chose a table near the back, giving us a view of the open expanse of sea... the

“Worthing Riviera” as owner Phil Ducket likes to say. It is genuinely like being on a cruise ship there’s no other way of describing it. You place your order at the bar and then food is brought to your table - sadly no 1930s-style waiters, as yet. This we duly did, and waited for the aternoon tea to arrive. When it came, it met our expectaions - with fresh sandwiches, large scones (with jam and cream in cute litle Kilner jars) and individual cakes, all matched with tea (I had Earl Grey, Joe stuck to “normali-tea”, as he calls it). Service was atenive and friendly and the prices are reasonable, considering the uniqueness of where you are. To be fair, the food will probably always play second iddle to the amazing views and the overall ambiance of this art-deco gem. We let saisied and happy, making our way back to shore along what we consider to be the best pier, no mater what those pesky judges thought...

The Dadifesto

PEOPLE | PLACES

Three Letters, One Word, Dad MY WHOLE WORLD IS BASED all around on one three-leter word. This word is ‘Dad’. Sounds dat right? But let me explain.

Us men might not be known for loving public displays of afecion, but believe me, secretly we uterly adore it.

Two years ago I set up the ‘Don’t Believe The Hype, The World’s First Agency Of Dad’ a magazine and online publishing/ PR agency for dads.

Before I was somebody’s father – I was somebody’s son.

Before I was somebody’s father – I was somebody’s son. And I belonged to the big hairy hand that steadied me – when I was learning to run. I’ve launched a campaign called ‘The Dadifesto’, to challenge the media negaive ‘Daddy Pig-like’ stereotypes of dads as bumbling bufoons To walk and to talk, to shout and to scream Alongside this, I juggle running TotRockinBeats with being a freelance The broad shoulders to lean on, teaching me how to laugh journalist wriing about all things dad-related and doing the school run. And, and to dream. as the 18th of June marks Father’s Day, you can imagine this is my busiest Back so strong, with the weight of the world on your shoulders ime of the year. And one son, three daughters and ive cheeky grandkids to help you grow older. The date is tradiionally one where You always danced to your own tune played by a strange and us dads are inundated with tacky unorthodox band socks, t-shirts and mugs proclaiming I can see you now at on a bench, a cuppa of tea and newspaper in hand. that we are ‘The Greatest’ one You are the big shoes that I could never quite ill ever. While the rest of the year With a mind full of schemes that would never sit sill. we are dismissively patronised as The kindhearted soul with sparkling blue eyes, born just for laughing ‘Babysiters’ if we dare venture out And quick-wited feet made for scoring goals and for dancing. with the kids by ourselves... The same hands made for drawing and for holding a beer Are the same hands made for helping and for holding us dear. But have you ever stopped and Never told you I love you nearly enough imes asked your dad what he would Public displays of afecion, the most audacious of crimes. actually want as a present? The message was passed on instead by thought and in deed So thank you, Daddy, by building me strong, you gave me all that I need. If you did, you might be surprised. But the last ime I saw you, I think you understood The year supply of free beer, a pass I looked into your eyes I knew that my Blackpool boy had done good. Photo: Loraine Perry for a guilt-free, all-expenses paid So now I know it’s ime for you to go, but I’m not quite ready or set weekend in Vegas with (insert name of the favourite football team), and a My Father, my hero – a man I will never forget.

…inundated with tacky socks, t-shirts and mugs proclaiming that we are the greatest…

coachload of Swedish nymphets may not actually be at the top of his list. (Possible number 2 or 3, I reckon)

For me, it’s a lot simpler yet a whole more unatainable. What I’d dearly want is to hang out with my own dad and son for the day. I’d love to take them down to somewhere like Splashpoint. We’d go for a kick about on the green, eat ish and chips on the beach and to jokingly compete at stone skimming at the sea. Sadly, that isn’t going to happen. My dad passed away three years ago, so he never got to see the wonderful world we’ve made for ourselves down here. It is strange to remember that before you were somebody’s father you were somebody’s son. The hopes, dreams, heart-clenching worries and wee-wee inducing laughter caused by your own, snoty-nosed ankle biters isn’t a feeling that you alone own. Losing a loved one is a life changing event for any of us. When it is a dearly loved parent that goes and you are a parent yourself, you have a glimpse into just how much they have done for you. This is the poem that I wrote ater my dad past. I hope you don’t mind me sharing it and that maybe it makes you think about your dad. So, if you sill have the opportunity give them a big, big hug.

Happy Father’s Day. Unil next ime. Keep the faith, keep it real, keep on keeping on and keep em’ peeled.

Film Makers’ Club

Looking for New SDFM Members! SOUTH DOWNS FILM MAKERS (SDFM) is a local ilmmaking club, founded in 1989, that produces drama, comedy, animaion, documentaries and AV presentaions. Alan Cross, a member of the club, tells Here & Now why they are looking for new members.

Film is the art of Visual Storytelling. You can only get the story by geing up close and personal. Meeing people from all walks of life, whatever age, is where you learn the most - something the Internet will never replace. Movie making is a people driven art.

SDFM has no shortage of age and experience, so the club is reaching out to share this experise with younger ilmmakers looking for help to develop their visual storytelling. While many members have their own ilmmaking equipment, this is by no means essenial as SDFM provide manpower and equipment.

The club has a whole host of exciing projects and a varied program of talks, workshops, ilm shows and compeiions on for 2017-2018. SDFM also provide external ilm shows to community and social groups to promote local causes.

It’s true by visiing sites like Google, Wikipedia and YouTube you can sit in a room, all alone by yourself and learn almost anything from your computer screen but you can’t build relaionships with real people unless you are in the room with them, talking about what you love most – ilmmaking! The fact is, ilmmaking is a collaboraive process and SDFM supports anybody unable to aford ilm school or struggling to fund a ilm, by providing the tools they need. SDFM are a really welcoming group and you’ll quickly discover that many members have had lives and careers working in Radio, Television, Banking, Insurance, Travel and so on – providing all the stories you need in one room! There’s even a couple of reired DJ’s with scandalous stories about fading pop stars from back in the day! Enough said.

SDFM have won many trophies and awards. Their recent ilm “The Bench By The Sea” was ilmed enirely on locaion in Worthing and won Best Film, Best Drama, Audience Favourite and Best Actor at the Sussex Film Fesival 2016. It went on to win Best Drama, Best Photography and Best Film at the SERIAC Film Fesival 2017 in April this year. Producer Rebecca Simmons says: “It’s an unbelievable achievement for a ilm that was made in just one week”! “Are You Siing Comfortably?” a documentary about local cratsman Brendan Devit-Spooner picked up the Denham Gold Cup and a four star raing in the Briish Internaional Amateur Film Fesival (BIAFF). Director David Allen said: “We are thrilled our work has been recognized! We encourage members to improve ilming techniques and we are always looking for new people “.

The late Eileen Godfrey’s “Ferring’s 1250th Anniversary” ilm about the history of Ferring was an instant hit and was awarded the presigious Chris Hodson Trophy for Best Documentary. Worthing’s evolving creaive hub is right at the heart for many more South Coast ilmmakers, including award winning Cinematographer Alan Stockdale (Foundlight), Mark Tew (ButonPressed), Dick Douglas & Obie Dean of Across the Border Producions, Melody Bridges of Worthing Wow and Jonathan Brooks, a local award winning director, who is currently in pre-producion for a feature length ilm. In April this year, with a charity donaion, SDFM supported the Worthing WOW 30th Anniversary screening of “Wish You Were Here” at the Dome Cinema to celebrate another locally made ilm (and launch the book, which menions SDFM’s Brian Meetens). It is amazing ater all these years how much interest the ilm sill atracts and how it played a part in saving the Dome Cinema for future generaions of ilm lovers to enjoy.

SDFM meet the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month from 7.30 – 10pm in Ferring Village Hall. (There’s no meeing 21 June). Doors are open to anyone in the region with an interest in ilmmaking and the irst two visits are free so come along and join us for an evening of fun and ilm. southdownsilmmakres.org.uk

Wish You Were Here? They were!

David Leland & Emily Lloyd with some of the cast and crew from the ilm LOCAL AUTHOR SARAH POND WAS LUCKY ENOUGH to get one of the much sought-ater ickets to the screening of the iconic ilm Wish You Were Here in April. Here is her take on the event. There was an excited buzz ringing around the Dome Cinema on Sunday 23 April. The beauiful Grade II listed cinema was once again host to the director and star of the classic ilm Wish You Were Here for the 30th anniversary screening. Organised by Melody Bridges, the Arisic Director of Worthing WOW, this was the irst ime that Emily Lloyd had been back to Worthing since ilming in 1987. She was reunited with the director, David Leland, and other members of the cast and crew, including local residents who were connected with the ilm. The ilm was introduced by David Leland, who was interviewed ater the screening. Emily Lloyd also spoke to the audience, telling us that she “had very fond and nostalgic memories of the Dome”. Fans of the ilm had their photo taken with Emily in the foyer aterwards. A very nice touch was that people from the audience were invited to the front to talk about their experiences of the ilming, some even ending up in the ilm! The event also launched the book Electric Pictures: A Guide to

the Films, Film-Makers and

Cinemas by Ellen Cheshire and James Clarke. With the

foreword writen by none other than David Leland, this fascinaing book celebrates 120 years of ilm in Sussex. The event was a huge success, and I was thrilled to be a part of an historic event.

places. These songs cement the legendary reputaion of these ciies and highways by proudly proclaiming their status with intricate lyrics and buoyant tunes. What does Worthing have by way of HIT tracks about its scary alleyways and hideous landmarks? Nothing. So that’s what I want you to do this month: Write a Worthing Anthem. Put stories of Worthing to rich, catchy melodies. Add to our

mythology by wriing songs with itles like ‘Mind the Goring Gap’ or ‘Broadwater Green! What a sight to be seen!’ or even ‘Teville Gate State of Mind’ (sample lyrics: ‘When one door opens/a Teville Gate closes/ gonna part those buildings/just like Moses’). Be sure to get this song to number one in the charts though, otherwise your quest has been fruitless. Work due in Christmasime 1973 for maximum legendariness.

More Homework from me, Joe Bunn, next time.

Spin AS FULLY PAIDUP MEMBER of the Gobby Musicians Society, it struck me recently that my connecion with music, like so many others all around the world, has been inextricably linked with vinyl; staring with the irst 7” single I bought in 1972, Roxy Music’s ‘Virginia Plain’, and the irst longplaying record I bought the same year - David Bowie’s game-changing ‘The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders from Mars’. This global love afair with music and the way we listen to it started 140 years ago in 1877, when Thomas Edison invented the Phonograph, which in turn became the Gramophone, and our obsession with the vinyl disc phonograph record (our eponymous hero of this aricle) has been going on prety much unabated ever since, despite a dip in its popularity during the 80s, 90s and noughies when CD’s and downloads became the ‘big thing’.

the Black Circle a staggering 53% since 2015, with sales of 3.2 million reaching a 25 year high in 2016, a phenomenon driven by consumers young and old who are embracing physical formats of music in their thousands! In a recent Guardian aricle to mark Record Store Day in April, ex-Arab Strap frontman Aidan Mofat described his life-long love afair with vinyl, expressing it quite poeically: “…Records are sexy. They take something abstract and ethereal and make it tangible: like a lover, you can hold a song in your hands and trace its music with your ingers.” And he’s not alone in his praise! ‘Vitalogy’, the 3rd studio album by Pearl Jam released in November

But now vinyl is enjoying the most amazing of comebacks, somewhat in the manner of an Ali or Sinatra – a class act, a prize ighter coming out from the ropes and defying all the doubters and naysayers, succeeding against all the odds to claim the headlines again. Would you believe Dear Readers that LP sales are up

1994 featured as its irst single ‘Spin The Black Circle’, a song or perhaps we might say, a sonic prayer, about the band’s love of vinyl records. With such high-proile devotees and this ‘strange fascinaion, fascinaing me’, I thought it was about ime that I invesigated what this all meant as far

as Worthing is concerned; I wanted to ind out who was spinning the black circle and why… My journey started at the Record Fair at St Paul’s in March, organised by Kevin Hough and Mick Snow from the ‘Train of Thought Emporium’. There, amidst the historic grandeur of this 200-year old former place of worship, was a room full of new acolytes, seeking salvaion for their souls in the form of thousands of bible-black longplaying records. I caught up with Richey Marshall, founder of online website ‘Geek Guardians’ who was busy searching for some 80s Electro records. I asked Richey what it was about vinyl that was so special to him; ater giving it a moment’s thought he said to me that the sound of the needle dropping onto the record sill sent ‘a shiver’ down his spine and that unlike other formats, vinyl was ‘warm, like a blanket’ … that it had ‘a mysique’ that CDs and MP3s could and would never have. Was vinyl geeky I asked? ‘Most deinitely’ was the answer! Moving on, I couldn’t miss the opportunity to pop into ‘Music Mania’ in West Buildings to have a chat with owner Steve Crompton who’s been supplying vinyl to Worthing residents and many naional and internaional customers for over 17 years. According to Steve, the boom in vinyl has been going on for 4 or 5 years now but in the last 2 years it’s absolutely exploded. Steve was convinced that young people were driving the trend because they were fed up with digital and wanted something tangible to hold and talk about on social media channels and with really cool artwork, much beter, richer and more dynamic sound. Talking to Mick Snow at ‘Train of Thought Emporium’, Mick’s love of vinyl started when he was a kid and was as strong now as ever… Mick

LIVE MUSIC

specialises in a wide-range of genres and is known for his incredible stock of reggae and dub, something that is geing harder to ind he says as the boom coninues to grow. Again, I asked Mick what was so special about vinyl and he said that that a vinyl record was a ‘snapshot in ime of something special made by creaive people that would last for ever’. Interesingly, Mick added that the place of the Record Store in this boom was pivotal too as it provided a physical place to go to meet, a space to hang out and enjoy the whole ritual of listening to and buying music.

…the vinyl boom is a global phenomenon but it’s also a local sensation... Well-known local DJ, Joe Bunn a.k.a. The 7 Inch Goliath, also values vinyl for the World of Rare Books in Goring and he agreed with Mick’s point of view about the joy of the ritual when buying records – ‘the physical, tangible quality of records and the fact that you can touch them’ is unique he says. And what’s more, there’s even ‘a healing property to the analogue sound’ says Joe. So there you have it – the vinyl boom is a global phenomenon but it’s also a local sensaion; transforming Worthing businesses, connecing people of all ages, creaing meaning and fun again when buying music and even healing us through its inherent physical properies! Now wonder so many of us are tuned in and turned on by the Spin of the Black Circle and long may it coninue.

The Worthing Bypass

AND FINALLY

This column will not change your life FESTIVAL SEASON IS UPON US and the Ubiquitous Hack could not be happier. If this is because you think I’ll be hosing down the wellies and paddling of to the Isle of Wight, Glastonbury, or any number of paries in parks, you would be sadly mistaken. My fesival days are done. Gone are the days of queuing for the loo, messing around in the mosh pit, living without washing and generally slumming it. I’m afraid the middleage middle-ground of ‘ glamping’ does not appeal either. It strikes me as neither one thing nor the other, a bit like 1980’s synth pop: it wasn’t uterly dreadful nor was it real music as such, it just sort of appeared with all the unwelcome gravitas of lares and disappeared as soon as a half decent melody from Elton swarmed into sonic view. I’m happy, parially because I don’t have to wade through crowds and mud and sile in traic jams and yearn for the smell of soap, but also because I can remember what those grand symphonic jamborees were like, when I was young and didn’t mind all of that melodic malarkey as long as I could discern a banging dity or two and drink up the community spirit (literally and metaphorically).

of local aciviies. It was with real delight that I stumbled across the Byline Fesival –‘Debate, Think, Laugh and Change the World!’ – taking place in a ield near Uckield this month. An alternaive strapline on the website reads ‘ A riot of free speech’ which sounds like a middleclass call to arms, or at least unil tea ime.

Before then I was immersed in it all and what an immersion it was. I can’ t remember much but I do remember this: drunken dancing, dossing down in the wrong tent, losing valuables, dignity and common sense for days on end (a bit like being treated to my own internal, surrealist dumbed-down version of Britain’ s Got Talent before I even knew that truly terrible telly existed). These are the things that will remain forever in the irmament of my youth-ensconced mind, never to be aired again in public, a bit like Shane MacGowan.

I scrolled down through the interminable list of worthy scribes – one or two of whom I know and as such would alter the ‘worthy’ moniker to protect the innocent – to ind out more. ‘Woodstock for the Facebook Generaion’ certainly grabbed my atenion, not least because it goes prety near to making no sense whatsoever, which appeals to my sense of certainty. Just under that was a shout-out for the Frontline Bar – the Frontline Club being the Ubiquitous Hack’ s journo-friendly watering hole and home from home in London – so I eagerly devoured news of its atendance before stumbling on a photo of a tent described in the capion as the ‘Original Korean War tent’ (what other sort of Korean War could there possibly be? The copycat one? The pracice one? The old one? The one from a coupla weeks back? In hindsight, I think they mean the tent not the war, which makes more sense). The ‘original’ tent from a Korean War looked disconceringly like a prop straight out of MASH (a terriic icional TV show about a factual mobile hospital during a really real war) bedecked with blood-stained operaing tables inside I imagine/wish as punters sip cocktails and trample on batle-swathed swabs (which is impossible to pronounce ater a cocktail, I can tell you). ‘Meet the world’s top journalists at the Frontline Bar’ it proclaims with misplaced pride. So that’s who they are. I always wondered.

And so with a sense of freedom that such travails need never cast a shadow on my maudlin, middle-aged soul, I scanned for this summer’s list

Next up Julie Bindel is quoted saying “Brilliant. Piers Morgan won’t be there” and that’s as good a reason as any for toddling along, old-

Things began to change when a drunken Shane MacGowan staggered on to stage with The Pogues at the Finsbury Park Fleadh, head-buted the microphone and limped of again like a dog walking into a lamppost (if you haven’t seen that sort of thing, you haven’t lived – check it out on YouTube, it’s why it was invented). I knew then that my folk-punk days were done. If he couldn’t handle the heat then what hope for the rest of us lily-livered hops-slurping puppies?

aged reicence be damned (if you’re a fan of Piers Morgan a) you shouldn’t be reading this column and b) I’m very sorry Mrs Morgan, for everything). Pop along yourself, say hullo to the Pop-up Ubiquitous Hack – undisinguishable obviously from the dishevelled crowd of more highly esteemed scribes –and we can have a ipple together. I won’t stay long mind, I’ll need to visit the Fake News Tent and check out the Alternaive

…if he couldn’t handle the heat then what hope for the rest of us… Facts Stage headlined by retro tribute act Donny Trumpton and the Trumpeteers (would that it were) before duifully pretending to listen to lectures from war/wine-weary journos and Hugh Grant. But don’ t expect me to go glamping, that’s just not right.

The Ubiquitous Hack If you’re a fan of Piers Morgan you shouldn’t be reading this column.
