TANK GIRL AND ALL RELATED CHARACTERS TM AND © HEWLETT & MARTIN

INTERVIEW: ALAN MARTIN

Alan Martin, the writer and co-creator of ‘Tank Girl’ with Jamie Hewlett, talks to Here & Now about the origins in the late 80s, and what has happened to her in the past 30 years. TANK GIRL STARTED AS AN IMAGE of a big, burly, punk girl brandishing a huge gun. I picked up a photo of a tank that one of the other students had for a World War Two project, Jamie stuck it behind his drawing, and labelled it ‘Tank Girl’. It was a filler page in our fanzine. A year or so later, Brett Ewins started ‘Deadline’ and asked us to produce a full comic strip of ‘Tank Girl’.

“We were students at Northbrook, then known as the West Sussex College of Art and Design. We had great tutors, who encouraged us never to take anything at face value; we could rip everything to pieces, and in the ruins, find our own voice and style. Fellow students have gone on to careers in design or related fields – to name a few, Phil Bond, a comic artist who has drawn ‘Tank Girl’, Billy Strohacker who runs Chichester based Strohacker Design School, Mat Williams and Gary Marsh run design studios, Nick Williams was head of graphics for Levis Europe and recently published ‘Denim Branded’. Glyn Dillon joined us after college; he is now costume designer on ‘Star Wars’. Sharon Elphick is an artist, photographer and teacher, and Nadia Chalk is an artist and community arts leader in Worthing. CONTINUES ON PAGE 9

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 7

“Working with Jamie on the original ‘Deadline’ series, we came up with ideas, any stupid ideas, whilst constructing the script and the artwork, usually at the last minute. These days, working with artists like Brett Parsons, who lives in Michigan, USA, I work in a more traditional way, sending a script more like a movie screenplay, with action and dialogue split into numbered panels. Within that, we still manage to be pretty stupid, though. “As co-creator and writer, the character of ‘Tank Girl’ is very much part of me; my deepest, darkest, stupidest thoughts usually end up being expressed by ‘Tank Girl’ in one way or another. After thirty years, she has changed as our lives have changed; she’s no longer twenty and down the pub all day. She’s grumpier in the mornings. “She remains a strong, and highly recognisable female, and we are very happy to have created such a prominent and disgraceful character. “The 1995 film was a disappointing experience for us, but it introduced her to a whole new audience, who then discovered her crazy, sprawling past. There’s a rich seam of history, going back thirty years; we put it all out there – the world, the characters, stories – so that our readers can inhabit it and have fun with it.” Alan has curated pieces from his collection of comic ephemera for an exclusive display cabinet in Worthing Museum. “The lucky people will be able to see a very rare original copy of Atom Tan #1, printed on the Worthing Art College’s photocopier thirty years ago, featuring the first published work of Gorillaz artist Jamie Hewlett, and the very first appearance of the comic and movie icon Tank Girl.” Alan Martin You can read an extended version of this article at hereandnowmag.co.uk/blog The Legend of Tank Girl and The Wonderful World of Tank Girl are available from all good booksellers and comic shops! n

Caring for a loved one can be demanding and, for a carer, finding time for themselves isn’t always easy. Our day services for children and adults with disabilities, additional needs or dementia provide that important break. Loved ones are cared for safely, whilst themselves benefitting from taking part in stimulating and enjoyable activities whilst socialising with others.

12

Very often, people wish to remain in their own homes for as long as possible. Our Home Care and Outreach Services are here to help this happen. Through our Outreach Services we help to reduce isolation by ensuring people are aware of what is available to them in the community. When it’s time to think about leaving home, we have three warm, comfortable care homes and sheltered accommodation to choose from. Offering specialist dementia care, nursing or simply residential services, our facilities provide something for everyone.

So here we are, hurtling towards October. The month of Halloween, darker evenings and for some of us, this means hot drinks, warm blankets and finding a cosy seat to read in. BUT FOR THOSE OF YOU who still want to get out and about for a literary fix, we have tons going on.

8-13 Oct LIBRARIES WEEK is a national campaign to celebrate libraries. This year, with a focus on wellbeing. Worthing & Adur libraries have regular activities to promote wellbeing, you’ll find a few in the general listings.

11 Oct WORTHING WORKSHOP: THE COUNTER-CULTURE ARTS LAB THAT ‘FREAKED OUT’ THE TOWN. 50 years ago, as the 1960s exploded across the UK, Worthing had its own wild group of activists: The Worthing Workshop. Founded in 1968, it was one of a national network of Arts Labs across Britain, inspired by the original Arts Lab, established at London’s Drury Lane in 1967. Half a century later three key players from the Workshop, John May, Ian Grant and Rod Cohen are giving a lively presentation, followed by a Q&A with music writer Thomas H Green, alongside plenty of

We caught up with John from the Skeptics to give us the lowdown on the group. H&N: What’s this Skeptics in a Pub deal all about? JOHN: The Skeptics are like a live event for people who enjoy QI on television; people who find information entertaining. People tell us what they would like us to cover and our committee considers them. We deal with topics on scientific developments and social issues. It’s a brain stimulating evening in a pub! What’s not to like? H&N: If you could have anyone in the world come to do a talk, who would it be? JOHN: Neil de Grasse Tyson H&N: Who organises the events and how often are they held? JOHN: We are a not for profit organisation operated entirely by volunteers. We have held an event every month since Oct 2013. So there you have it! Everyone is welcome. £5 entry, starts 8pm, the Grand Victoria Hotel function room (by Worthing station). See worthing.skepticsinthepub.org for booking info, future talks and locations.

Shoreham beach has its own terrifying legend…Witnesses have told of first being aware of a burning smell and then seeing the ghost of a burned man screaming in agony.

1

The Tudor footbridge which spans the River Adur at Old Shoreham is said to be haunted by The Blue Lady. A sobbing spirit, quite literally blue, that is said to be seen between the 8.00pm and 1.00am, crying for her long-lost love.

2

In 1893, a great storm was said to have swept a fishing boat from Shoreham Harbour up the River Adur. The boat belonged to a local fisherman and provided him and his family both food and financial security. Legend has it that the boat became stuck among the rocks. Disturbingly, witnesses tell of a ghostly ship seemingly

After a séance was held at the Crown and Anchor in Shoreham, a ghostly pair of legs could be seen dangling from the ceiling.

DADIFESTO

Scared of Halloween? If you’re scared of Halloween, don’t worry, I am banning it.

ANY OTHER DAY OF THE YEAR, dressing your kids in Satanic costumes, pulling them around the streets in the dark, getting them to knock on strangers’ doors to demand Haribo with menaces would have you straight on the child-protection register and your face firmly plastered on a witch-hunt Facebook group. However, due to a custom started by Pagans 2000 odd years ago, on 31 October, this is perfectly acceptable. Actually, it is more than acceptable; it is massively hyped by retailers so us lucky parents get to spend a small fortune on tatt to help promote it. I tell you, the only horrifying thing about Halloween is keeping your kids up past bedtime on a school night and giving them extra sugar, yet we do. Forget haunted houses visit a family with kids who have the recent stomach bug that was going the playground. Now that’s terrifying. This year I decided that for Halloween, I’ll go as a toddler and scream “no” all day long. Since moving to the area a few years ago, I’ve been amazed at how much the town goes for these Halloween antics. Our West Worthing neighbourhood comes alive with hundreds of costumed families on the streets, and a few of the local houses go all out with smoke shows, gazebos full of spider webs and fake blood. Kids queue for ages for the pop-up chamber of horrors to scream and collect a handful of brightly coloured treats. “Trick or treat” comes the high-pitched call out. Think about this, how many people have you seen ‘front out’ the little scroungers? This year I reckon we should try something different. When they come-a-calling, we stand defiant, as one united, and answer their

Hand over your Haribo or else Dan Flanagan (& son) The Dad Behind TotRockinBeats | Dad La Soul & Don’t Believe The Hype

demands with a show of solidarity and say a firm toddler like “NO”. No, we don’t agree with you demanding sweets with menaces! In the 1960s The Kray Twins ruled London with similar tactics. They’d send in a scary monster and collect a ‘pension’ from businesses under veiled and not so veiled threats of terror. Nowadays we are encouraging our kids to follow suit, under the guise of ‘it’s just a bit of fun’. Man alive, what are we thinking! 364 days of the year we wouldn’t dare encourage our kids to beg or take sweets off strangers. Especially if they lived in spooky, blacked out houses. You know the ones covered in cobwebs and poor sacrificed pumpkin brains that have scrapped out and scattered, taking the place of a nicely mown lawn. Now we compete in making our kids look more blood-soaked, how screwed up is that? I reckon we should ban ‘Trick or Treat’ altogether. Think about the money we would save! No more money spent on tacky costumes that fall apart three hours later. No more money spent on sweets for neighbourhood kids that don’t want yours to associate with. No more weekly subs to Weight-Watchers because you have to shift that extra gut because you’ve scoffed all your nippers stash after explaining to them the importance of having a balanced diet. Continuing my theme becoming Worthing’s answer to Martin Lewis I’m also thinking about a campaign to explain to kids that since Brexit, the Tooth-fairy is asking for pocket money upfront to take away their spat out body parts. If they don’t pay, they will be charged with fly-tipping, fined and have their school-photo displayed as a mugshot in The Herald’s round up of the local court reports. Who’s with me brothers and sisters? Let’s put the little blighters back in their places. n Dan Flanagan

Celebrate Achievements 10 KEYS TO HAPPIER LIVING No.6 DIRECTION

WORTHING TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB 2017 WINNER: TEAM OF THE YEAR

SPORTS & WELLBEING

Sports Awards

Nominations for the 2018 Sussex Sports Awards are now open! Based on the latest research, the national movement Action for Happiness has identified 10 Keys to Happier Living. The 6th is Direction. RESEARCH SHOWS THAT HAVING GOALS to look forward to is one of the key ways in which we can make ourselves happier. Goals give our lives direction, help us turn our hopes into reality and make us feel more positive about the future. Apparently, it is not just the achievement of goals that boosts our happiness. Choosing, planning and actively working towards them are equally as important for our well-being. But we know, for example, that most New Year’s resolutions fail. So how can we make them work? For best results, choose goals that really matter to you - ones that are challenging but also achievable. Break big goals down into smaller ones. For each mini-goal decide exactly where and when you will take action on it, and remind yourself why it’s important. Writing down or sharing goals with others will also increase your commitment. If you are in business or thinking of starting one, take a look at the business events on pages 23/24, and meet up with like minded people who may be able to help you. To find out more about Action for Happiness Worthing, go along to the monthly meet-up group – next one Tues 9 October, 7-9pm at the lovely Coast café. Scary Mortgage Rate? So many people that meet with our advisers to review mortgages are on interest rates so high they would make you reel in horror! THESE HIGH RATES have normally been in place for ages but haven’t been changed as they are still affordable. Most have just been too busy with everyday life to sort it out.

B U S I N E S S F E AT U R E

Are you one of these people or are you just not sure if this applies to you? Is your mortgage on a Halloween-esque frightful rate? Don’t worry help is at hand. Take our MORTGAGE CHALLENGE today to SEE HOW MUCH YOU COULD SAVE. There are 5 basic steps for peace of mind: 1. Dig out some key documents. We will need your most recent mortgage statement (normally issued once a year), last 3 payslips and P60, or if self employed your last 2 years tax calculations or accounts, and a summary of any credit card or loan debts you have. 2. Pop into one of our shops at 10 Chapel Road or 77 Rowlands Road in Worthing. One of our team will copy these documents and pass them to our qualified mortgage advisers for a no obligation review. If you can’t pop in to see us one of our qualified

mortgage advisers can come and see you at your home at a convenient time. 3. We will assess your options from over 120 lenders and give you a call back to let you know what savings can be made.

MATT SUTTON, MANAGING DIRECTOR OF EMERALD FINANCE, your local award winning financial advisers, is here to answer your financial questions. Got a query? Email info@emeraldfinance.co.uk

4. If any of these options are of interest we will arrange a meeting at either our offices or your home to run through the finer details. We will complete any necessary paperwork, detailing all the costs and features of the mortgage so you can make a fully informed decision. 5. Whilst your new application is going through, our administration team will keep you updated at key stages of the process. Within a number of weeks, you will be on your new deal and saving money to spend on the things you enjoy rather than topping up the lender’s finances! So don’t hesitate, take our MORTGAGE CHALLENGE today – see how much you can save. We look forward to discussing this with you. LOCAL BUSINESS

Worthing Works Please mention Here & Now when booking your event and check websites for updates.

How can you stay informed about what’s going on in Worthing and the potential opportunities for your business? ONE WAY IS TO MAKE TIME TO GET OUT, attend an event or two and network. This month’s events include The End of Digital, a talk by Tom Cheeswright. Worthing Digital. Thurs 4 Oct, 7-10pm, The Dome, FREE Much of our digital world will just be ‘stuff’ for the coming generations, blending into the background, as innocuous as a wheel or a table. But as digital technology disappears from view it is changing our world, our work, and the very nature of what it means to be human. How will we live and work in a future where the lines between physical and digital have been erased? Where we exist as much outside our biology as inside it? Book at meetup.com/WorthingDigital/events. FREE Tom Cheesewright is a frequent presence on TV and radio, explaining today’s world of high frequency change and the technology that drives it. Mark Ford, organiser at Worthing Digital interviewed Tom in advance of his talk.

MARK: Tom You’re a futurist…

what’s that?

TOM: So I work with companies and

people around the world, typically large

companies to really try and answer three questions. Firstly, what does our future look like? Companies that come to me are typically quite concerned, or potentially excited about what the future holds. They have this sense that change is happening faster now and they want to change the way they think about the future to be a bit more responsive. So that leads to the second question, which is once we understand that future, how do we tell that story? There’s no point having a vision of the future if we can’t communicate it to our customers or our shareholders or our board try and secure investment or whatever else it may be. So I help them with that storytelling piece. And thirdly we get to the really knotty problem, which is once you’ve seen the vision of the future, we’ve convinced everybody else about it, what on earth do we do about it? For video and full transcript of the interview visit hereandnowmag. co.uk/worthing-digital-interview-tom-cheesewright-a-futurist n

THOMAS H GREEN - MUSICAL TIME MACHINE

Crass Play Field Place ABOVE: CRASS, 1984. LEFT TO RIGHT: PETE WRIGHT, STEVE IGNORANT, N.A.PALMER PHOTO: TRUNT.

Worthing, Saturday 6 June 1981 If The Sex Pistols kick-started the British punk movement and The Clash flashlit the possibility of social commentary, Crass actually lived punk as a political idea. They were punk’s conscience. ACTIVE BETWEEN 1977 AND 1984, based in their Epping Forest commune, they became the totemic band of anarcho-punk, their music and activities a fervent call to resistance and direct action as Margaret Thatcher brought her baleful vision to bear on the nation. Louise Purbrick, now a lecturer in the History of Art and Design at the University of Brighton, was a 17-year-old punk as the summer of 1981 approached. When short-lived punk fanzine Inside View took up the cause of a punk who’d been arrested at the Brixton Riots that April, Purbrick decided to put on a gig to raise money for his fine. Inside View gave her Crass’s number.

“I was at sixth form college and we used to have a cup of tea in Field Place,” she recalls, “It was a single storey cricket pavilion-type building. I’d been to sports clubs there when I was much younger. I approached them, these two guys who must’ve also run the café, and they said, ‘Yes’. I then thought, “Why have I agreed to do this, I’m barking mad.’ But I put an ad for the gig in NME’s back pages.” On 6th June Purbrick made sure she was at the venue early, by 3.00pm.

| October 2018 | HERE & NOW

“There were already people there,” she says, “The first person to arrive, I said, ‘Where are you from?’ and he said, “Nottingham.” My heart sank because I thought, ‘Oh no, this is too LOUISE PURBRICK, BASS PLAYER big’.” WITH SONGBIRDS, STUDENT Crass had started the year by releasing ‘Penis Envy’, a change of direction, concerned with women’s rights, featuring the female band members but not their usual singer, Steve Ignorant.

“We were starting to get a sort of boot boy following and we didn’t want that,” remembers Ignorant, “so what we did was put out ‘Penis Envy’ which shocked everyone. It made people think there should be more women at punk gigs, there should be more women in bands, and what you then got what was young bands - teenagers - trying to write feminist, anti-sexist lyrics. It was a start.”

COMMON ROOM, WORTHING SIXTH FORM COLLEGE

Highlighting this feminine aspect, support at the gig came from Annie Anxiety, a New Yorker whose short set consisted of sonic collages, and Poison Girls, a Brighton band fronted by 45 year old feminist Vi Subversa.

“Poison Girls were excellent,” ventures Kev Hough, then 19, “More rock’n’roll than Crass. It was a nice evening so lots of us were sitting outside on the bowling green drinking snakebite. Brendan [Hodges], who was later in [‘90s punk act] Blaggers ITA, snuck in through a window with a bottle of Cinzano. He was only 14. I had him and his mate, one under each arm. That was his introduction to punk rock gigs.” Anti-punk aggression dominated the streets of the surrounding area, the bullish mood perhaps exacerbated by an England World Cup ’82 qualifier against Hungary the same night (England won 3-1). POISON GIRLS: NIL, VI SUBVERSA, RICHARD FAMOUS AND LANCE D’BOYLE 1981 Poisongirls.co.uk

“Inside the venue was brilliant,”

remembers Derrick Furnival who, aged 22, attended with a date, he in black leather, she in white, “But getting in was a problem, all

these idiots outside - ‘What are you doing in Worthing!?’ – then getting back to Brighton on the train afterwards was even worse, police everywhere, carnage, little short of a riot.”

“People who were never into punk, all they know is what they read in the media,” says Steve Ignorant, “Spitting and swearing and general mayhem. For us it wasn’t about that, it was about trying to find a new way of life for ourselves. If anyone was being vicious and spiteful it was those who were trying to break our gigs up.” The ticketless clambered through a back window into a toilet - the

Louise Purbrick thinks that Crass also played Sir Robert Woodard Academy (then Boundstone School) in Lancing around the same period. Does anyone have any memories of that? Drop us a line at editorial@hereandnowmag.co.uk

only damage to the venue was a broken window and sink – but even those with tickets ran into problems.

“My mate’s girlfriend put the tickets in her fag packet,” recalls Robin Tate, “then duly threw the packet away after her last fag, so we had to retrace our steps back from the venue to the station looking for it. Thank God we found it!” The atmosphere inside was packed and wild, a sea of mohawks and studded leather jackets. The café owners came and complained to Louise Purbrick but soon realised the safest course of action was to let the event go ahead. Purbrick didn’t see much of the gig as she was on the door where chaos reigned.

“I was shouting at people that this is a fundraiser not a free gig,” she says, “but people were just swarming about. Maybe anyone reading this who didn’t pay might now want to donate some money to a cause of their choosing. But we still made money, more than enough for the fine.” The gig itself was explosive, with CRASS playing for an hour–anda-half. Steve Ignorant came onstage with a white stripe painted across his nose, sending up Adam Ant who was then at the very peak of his pop fame.

“What disappointed me about him was when he started he did this great interview where he said he was trying to start a sensual revolution,” says Ignorant, “I thought that was a brilliant thing to do. In the early days he was almost like 1920s Berlin cabaret. That was great but when he came out with ‘Prince Charming’ I was, like, “For God’s sake, Adam, don’t do it.” But he did. Then he appeared on the Royal Variety Performance and bowed to the Queen. That was it.” The gig was over by 11.00 and, while some rough adventures lay ahead for those running the gauntlet of violent local antipathy, Louise Purbrick was busy sorting out the band for their journey back to Epping Forest.

“I got them milk chocolate and loads of apples,” she says, “Lovely people that they are, they said, ‘Thank you for the apples.’ It was only years later I realised they couldn’t eat the milk chocolate as they were vegans.” “No, no, I wasn’t vegan,” chuckles Steve Ignorant, all these years later, “We’d be gigging all the time and the main thing for us was that almost every gig we did was a benefit, and we’d just take expenses. I lived on a diet of white bread and chips at service stations. So I’m pretty sure I did eat that bloody chocolate.” n

Thanks to Nigel Watson for leading me to Steve Ignorant, to Nick Linazasoro for the ticket stub, and to Brighton pop culture history Facebook page DJ Gremlin’s Rockin’ Stompers for their general usefulness.

If there was one show that I would recommend you seeing this entire year, it would be Ruby Wax: How To Be Human. Why? Because it will change the way you think about your life in the most positive and uplifting way. KNOWN MANY YEARS AGO as a celebrity comedian who used to create laughter through a more slightly dry sense of humour, Ruby has transformed herself significantly over time to become a truly positive ambassador for mental health. For years she suffered with a quiet depression that so many people feel the need to hide. Then, she dedicated her life to the study of mindfulness, and after being awarded with a master’s degree from Oxford for Mindfulness Based Cognitive Behavioural Therapy; she has gone on to give talks across the world and has been changing people’s lives day by day.

I was lucky enough to see her show Frazzled a couple of years ago in Worthing and it was fascinating. She talked in depth about how our minds work, bad habits that we have adopted as a society and good habits we can learn to train our brain to think in a much healthier way. I interviewed her backstage before the show (which you can find on Worthing Theatre’s Youtube channel) and she shared her journey very honestly and it was inspiring. This show is going to be even better, because joining her on stage will be monk Gelong Thubten, who explains how the mind works, and neuroscientist Ash Ranpura, who reveals where everything that makes us ‘us’ can be found in the brain. Together they will give us the complete picture and will inspire us all to live better healthier lifestyles. You can see Ruby Wax: How To Be Human live at the Pavilion Theatre on 15-16 October. Liane Carroll and Friends, Worthing Pier LIANE CARROLL is arguably one of the hottest singers on the UK Jazz Scene. A Double BBC JazzAward Winner, Liane also won Best female Jazz Vocalist at the first Ronnie Scotts Jazz Awards. Here & Now missed the opportunity to see Liane make a head-line appearance at the Glastonbury Festival 2017 but were thrilled to see her at Love Supreme in 2016. A wonderful pianist, we were captivated by her rich, bluesy tone, and loved her humorous interaction with her audience. Liane will be performing at Worthing Pier as a Trio. MAKE ME FAMOUS BABY #4

Getting it Down on Tape Over the last few months we’ve revealed that Worthing and the surrounding area is a hotbed of creative people beavering away in fascinating spaces, and specifically, great music recording studios: this month we head East to Lancing’s Good Times Music. GTM IS A RECORD LABEL and recording studio run by Duncan Stewart, who will be better known to those who went to Boomtown Festival this year as Duncan Disorderly and the Scallywags. The band have been well known on the festival circuit for ten years for their party-inducing, acoustic, eclectic, danceable sound: part Django Rheinhart, part Bob Marley, part Klezmer, part Horrible Histories. Duncan moved into the space once known as Black Wookie and completely designed the space from scratch starting three years ago, but things were really only finalised this January. “It was a long time getting it exactly right, but I designed it specifically - it’s all about a creative atmosphere. If the vibe of the place is inspiring, the music is going to be good.” With a fabulous collection of acoustic instruments hanging alongside the latest digital audio technology, GTM looks and feels like an inspiring place to work. The facility is the home of the Good Times Music label, which releases a wide range of festival-friendly artists, who record both live onstage, and at the studio with Duncan at the high spec analogue mixing desk, recording up to 32 tracks at a time.

GTM STUDIOS: PHOTO BY GTM

While there is a distinctly Motown-flavoured approach to the business model, their ethos is more Hippie than Berry Gordy, and

Duncan says “we made this place for music people to be creative - it’s not a factory!”. And while they spend a lot of time on their own label’s releases, they are open for Worthing and Brighton’s musicians. With Festival season nearly over, that could mean some great records to be made before Christmas. Back on the other side of town, news just in, that the 27 room studio complex at Northbrook MET West Durrington, will now be hosting up to ten BBC Introducing Live sessions this year.

Melita Dennett, producer and presenter of the Wednesday night BBC Radio show has presented the College Music department a list of those artists and bands ‘most likely to break’ this year, and live recording sessions will now be an integral part of degree students’ studio recording work. This makes the MET studios the Worthing equivalent of BBC’s Maida Vale, where all the classic BBC John Peel sessions were recorded over the years. Early sessions will include Worthing’s Yumi and The Weather, whose debut album has been getting extensive play on BBC Radio 6 this month. We can’t wait until the yearly BBC ‘Sound of 2018, 19, etc’ event that starts every year features music mostly Made In Worthing. n

STUDENT? NEW TO WORTHING? I’M AN 18-YEAR-OLD ITALIAN STUDENT on work experience with Blue Penguin at Freedom Works and Here & Now in Worthing. Worthing is a well-organized seaside town with everything students may need. If you’re a student here’s my 3 recommendations for things to do in Worthing you may enjoy: BOWLING: Honestly, I’m rubbish at bowling but even if you’re not very good it’s a great chance to let your hair down and relax. You can also have something to eat or drink and play in the arcade with friends. CINEMA: Perfect for English rainy evenings. I challenged myself to understand an English horror movie. It was fantastic and absolutely affordable. HOTPOD YOGA: This was my first experience of Hot Yoga. I really liked this unique immersion in an inflatable Pod heated to 37°C, which makes your body looser and yes sweatier. Hence, take water and a towel!

The Ghosts with the Most Halloween is just around the corner and you know what that means. That’s right, it’s time once again for the annual Worthing’s Best Ghost competition.

SO INSTEAD OF THE AVERAGE Nick or Treat (where you ask for some sweets, and if you don’t get them, some garden gnomes go missing) that your average Worthingite engages in, why not get your vote in for your favourite Worthing area spectre, poltergeist or phantom. Here are this year’s finalists: 1) The Floating Hands of Horace They say that the white gloved hands of an eccentric gentleman waft and wave themselves all over the roads of Worthing, directing traffic, and directing you be mildy scared. It used to be accompanied by an ethereal boater but legend is that the ghost of some wind blew that hat away.

2) The Ice Cream Ghost Whenever someone in Worthing serves an ice cream out of season, that’s when the Ice Cream Ghost appears. Years ago, when mixing up some winter-time 99s, a summer season cafe assistant fell into the vat of churning ice and cream, or whatever ice cream is made of. Nobody noticed for a whole week, but the raspberry ripples had never been more popular. 3) The Muscle Man Hypnotist In the late 1800s, a stage hypnotist visted Worthing. He put on a show in the middle of the town. Several of those curly moustached, stripey topped Victorian strongmen that you see in cartoons went along to this show. The Hypnotist made one of them think he was a chicken. The other strongmen were so angry that they’d made one of their own look silly, so the whole gang of them went to where the Hypnotist was staying and tore him limb from limb. The legend is that one day he will come back and entrance every person who has surplus gym muscles and no one to fight in this town to fight each other. To the death.
