GET YOUR DIARIES OUT!

There’s some great stuff on this September in Worthing Because this is Worthing, September means not just a meek return to school, but a glorious blossoming of cultural, sub-cultural and counter-cultural activity; opportunities to learn, to sing, to act, to write, to play, to watch, to listen, to dance, to make, to draw, to build, and to meet your neighbours before those evenings start to really draw in. The summer’s foreign language students are replaced by an older, more home grown crop who come to Worthing to study degrees and diplomas in creative subjects at Northbrook MET, from Music to Theatre, to Art to Games Design and on. After Freshers on the 20th, they’re out looking for more fun.

LET’S START WITH FESTIVALS, and the 2nd September’s ONE LOVE FESTIVAL at St Paul’s, a free, all-age community event to celebrate the diversity of Worthing with live music performances including choirs, samba, HipHop and Reggae DJs, with an art workshop, spoken word, storytelling, face paint, henna, Caribbean/Spanish street food in the afternoon, followed by Supersonic 70s Disco in the evening. The outdoor Festival season is not yet over, and as September is often drier and less windy than August and the nights darker, WORTHING LIGHT FESTIVAL, 8-10 September is well timed to be an exhibition of stunning, sustainable art installations that will light up Worthing’s East Beach for the whole weekend. Of course, not everything fun is new: FINDON SHEEP FAIR, also on 8-10 September, has being pulling them in since it first appeared on Nepcote Green sometime around 1785 (that’s

A.D.). Festivities begin on Friday Night with a funfair on the green and a Barn Dance in the marquee. Saturday is the fair itself, with craft stalls, sheep displays, sheep judging, a funfair, food stalls, and more on the green. Then in the evening, dance to live music from the popular local band Murdoch’s Crazy Eyes. If Findon is too far for you, there’s a FUN DAY & DOG SHOW on

Broadwater Green on Sunday 10 September with music, stalls with Pimms and craft beers. Our last September Festival is WORTHING’S 6TH FOOD & DRINK FESTIVAL, this year, 1617 September in Steyne Gardens with stalls and demonstrations don’t go too soon after a full meal! And just into October, on the 1st, GREEN DREAMS—COMMUNITY FOOD & GREENSPACE FESTIVAL returns to Field Place for its 2nd year, celebrating community and social enterprise groups involved in local food production and greenspace initiatives. Lot’s to see and do for all the family, go for the food!

There’s plenty of music gigs this month. On the 8th, you can choose either Funk and Soul with acclaimed DJ NORMAN JAY at St Paul’s, or go for live Tex-Mex with PAUL YOUNG’S LOS PACAMINOS at the Pier’s Southern Pavilion. Again, on the Pier’s Southern Pavilion, on the 20th, you can catch fourtime Blues Music Award nominee guitarist KIRK FLETCHER from the US. St Paul’s hosts 90s Brit-Pop chartbusters DODGY on the 22nd and you’ll find

NIK KERSHAW at the Assembly Hall on the 30th. If you like your guitarists louder, up close and with more tattoos, you need to check the events at Bar 42, who every week seem to bring touring bands from all over the world, including Czech band SKYWALKER on the 12th. Worthing Theatres have comedy on the 21st with BIG BASH and 23rd with MARK WATSON, while the 15th and 16th is clearly a Burlesque weekend, with STARLETS BURLESQUE SHOW on the Pier’s Southern Pavilion on Friday, then THE REVOLVER REVUE at St Paul’s on the Saturday.

WORTHING’S OPEN MIC scene continues across pubs throughout the town; if you can sing or play, have a go this month. For getting yourself some exercise, whether physical or mental, there’s everything from Art classes to comedy improv to Zumba at Worthing’s Community Centres, which you’ll find at Heene, Sidney Walter, East Worthing, St Paul’s, Durrington and Northbrook Barn. You’ll also find evening activities at most of our schools and colleges, with Durrington High, Worthing High, Davison, Northbrook and Worthing College all featuring sports, language music, dance, drama and more. Many of the local Church Halls are booked out for the new term for dance classes, Yoga, Pilates and increasingly lots of community choirs, such as Spring Into Soul, which starts its new term on 21 September at St Botolph’s in Heene. This is just a stroll through some of what’s available this month. All the details for these events are in the Listings section in this magazine, and you’ll find others on the Here & Now website, hereandnowmag. co.uk. Have a look, and get out this September, while you don’t need your warmest coat! Some advice: get some lights for your bicycle now, (if you have one) so you can cycle to some of these great events, get some exercise, park for free, then get home safely.

THE MAYDAYS COMEDY CLASSES

Comedy Improv comes to Worthing! IMPROVISED COMEDY IS GREAT FUN TO WATCH, BUT IT’S EVEN MORE HILARIOUS WHEN YOU’RE ACTUALLY PART OF IT YOURSELF. Maydays courses later, and slightly jaded by the weekly hike along the A27 to get our improv fix, a group of us decided it was time to bring comedy improv to Worthing instead. We eventually persuaded (OK, harassed) The Maydays into taking a chance on Worthing and the result was a laughter-filled, two-hour taster session at Heene Community Centre in June, and a commitment to running an 8-week beginners course in the autumn. Yay!

I discovered the joys of comedy improv four years ago when I did a taster day workshop with Brightonbased company, The Maydays, and I have been hooked ever since! Many

LAST REMAINING TWO-BEDROOM APARTMENTS FROM £300,000*

(Just to clarify, improvised comedy is very different to stand-up. In improv, everything is made up on the spot, so there is no script to remember, and definitely no joke-telling! It’s also a group effort and the comedy just happens in the moment as you build on each other’s ideas.)

Despite our initial worries that no one would turn up, the taster was a roaring success. This was largely thanks to the masterful direction and infectious enthusiasm of Mayday Jenny Rowe, but also down to the 14 other brave souls who turned up to give it a go (including Here & Now’s very own Frances!). Many of them had never done improv before, but any last-minute thoughts of making a bolt for the door were quickly forgotten as we all settled in to the supportive, playful, carefree bubble that is comedy improv.

By the end of it, everyone was in buoyant mood, having enjoyed something they’d thought was scary, and connected through laughter with a bunch of strangers. Here’s what some of them said: “really

funny, really entertaining and I laughed loads”; “I was pleasantly surprised at how coherent I could be on the spot”; “great fun, with people who were really supportive and enthusiastic” The Worthing beginners course starts Sunday 8 October, 10.3012.30, Heene Community Centre. A COLLECTION OF ‘SEASIDE CUTOUTS’ ALONG THE CENTRAL WALKWAY ON WORTHING PIER. HERE & NOW caught up with Nadia Chalk’ Co-Director of Creative Waves to talk about the latest instillation of art along our lovely pier. Nadia tells us “The idea grew after the original wooden Seaside Cutout (that we painted for the Golden Jubilee celebrations in 2012) was

thrown over the side of the pier last winter. A section of it was found in the sea at Lymington, obviously it was beyond repair! So many people have told us how much they loved it and frequently used it so we designed new work that has been sponsored by local businesses. “The interactive images are free to view every day of the year, until July 2019. Encouraging people to take ‘Seaside Selfies’ to make you laugh... also promoting Worthing on social media. “The new exhibition also features Tank Girl illustrations, the comic book character created in Worthing by Jamie Hewlett (Gorillaz) and Alan Martin when they were studying at Northbrook College 30 years ago.

“Alan reminded us that Worthing pier used to be called ‘New Amusements’...the perfect platform for creative collaborations with artists and audiences.” Creative Waves have added a splash of colour and fun to their free exhibitions on the pier with a collection of vibrant coloured panels that change with the sunlight and can be seen from afar. Thanks to Worthing Borough Council & West Sussex County Council for supporting their creative ideas. To find out more: creativewaves.co.uk #appearonthepier FB Creative Waves Community Arts Here & Now are here too and we’d love to see your pictures – tag us in too on FB hereandnowmagazineworthing Twitter @hereandnow_mag

KEEP WALKING, THERE’S MORE TO SEE… Creative Waves also co-curated, with We Are FoodPioneers CIC Heritage Lottery funded project, Last Fisherman Standing, which retells the history of Worthing’s fishing families. The Creative Waves School’s Project, themed ‘mini worlds’, involved nine local schools and is a great showcase for the talented designers and makers. And, look out for the stained glass windows, each with a story to tell. Arranged by Paul Holden, Worthing Journal. And finally, before you head back, stop off at the Southern Pavilion, (shout out to Phil Duckett for his vision), have yourself a cup of tea or something stronger if it’s cold out there.

*Orders placed by end of Sept 17. Applies to orders over 8 panels. Smaller orders receive calculated discount. Not valid for use with any other offer.

WORTHING HIGH SCHOOL

DADIFESTO

Back To School—Back To Reality THANK GOD THE SCHOOL HOLIDAYS ARE BEHIND US. NOW WE CAN GET READY TO CELEBRATE ‘NATIONAL TAKE A PHOTO OF YOUR KIDS IN FRONT OF A DOOR DAY’. Of course, there is the depression that sets in now that the long sunny days are behind us (all two of them). No more creating fun games on

But then something wonderful happens; the unbridled joy of knowing that someone else is now responsible for entertaining your child on a daily basis.

| September 2017 | HERE & NOW

Did you buy your child school uniform suitably big enough for them to grow into? (I go for at least three years, so the arms are big enough to wrap around all their new friends).

Did you put the name tags on the inside of your child’s soul, pencil case, water bottle, eyelids, in case you lose them?

rainy days that involve reading the huge Facebook threads of people complaining about Grafton car park being painted.

Let me explain.

Did you make them walk up and down enough and squeeze their feet enough when you were in Clark’s buying the new shoes? - No? Phone social services immediately as you are a terrible parent.

sweats and torturous visions of the ‘Did I’s?’ or in this case the ‘Did you?’.

Did you develop a wardrobe needs list for each child? Check for possible hand-me-downs from older siblings as you make your list. However, if little Billy’s siblings are teenage girls, be warned. Even in these enlightened genderfluid times, a five-year-old turning up with his PE kit in a Kim Kardashian handbag and an ‘I Luv Love Island’ crop-top will raise eyebrows. If that wasn’t enough to contend with, then there is the panic about fitting in. Nope not for your kids, but you and the cool kids at the school gates. The parent politics of the playground are tricky and need to be negotiated by the United Nations.

…phone social services immediately as you are a terrible parent…

Going back to school is a scary time for all involved. New classrooms to get used to, new teachers to win over and homework timetables to get your head around.

Did you set every alarm clock in the house, knowing full well that North Korea will pop by and turn them all off, sprinkling industrial strength sleeping dust around the air as they scale down the wall? The bright, forward-thinking amongst us will have introduced a school night bedtime routine two weeks in advance. These people are not your friends.

The thing you’ve probably forgotten about is the panic. Yes, when the back to school panic sets in, you will know about it. It is the fear that creeps in, in the dark, lonely early hours of the morning. It’s the panic that keeps you awake with night

Did you book in your little cherubs to after school karate, gymnastics or skateboarding clubs? No? Start panicking now; the waiting list is longer than the queue for the loos at Glastonbury and your name ain’t on it.

I’m afraid to say, Winter’s coming…

Platinium Roofing and Repairs

IN MY ROLE AS THE PARTNERSHIPS MANAGER at Voluntary Action Worthing (VAW), I am technically without a ‘home’ because I work from various offices. This keeps our charity costs low and means I can respond flexibly attending meetings and providing a free ‘drop-in’ for local not-for-profit organisations each Wednesday at St Paul’s (10.30 am– 4.00 pm).

EXPERT ROOFING BY EXPERIENCED PROFESSIONALS AT AFFORDABLE PRICES WE ARE A FAMILY RUN BUSINESS WITH OVER 10 YEARS’ EXPERIENCE WORKING THROUGHOUT SUSSEX.

Apparently, the correct definition for this method is peripatetic. The definition of which is: travelling from place to place, in particular working or based in various places for relatively short periods – two surprising synonyms also used to describe it are: vagabond and vagrant.

We pride ourselves on our quality and efficient service. Whether we replace one tile or a whole new roof, you are guaranteed the same level of professional service ROOFING From one slate to a new roof, we offer a complete service, flat and felt flat roofs, repairs, chimney work, rendering, lead work, guttering and fascia, GRP fibreglass.

These terms reminded me of the clumsy terminology used when I was a child when referring to homeless people. I have been homeless twice, once as a child and later as a young adult. It can happen to anyone. When I was homeless I did not think of myself as a vagabond and vagrant – I just needed support. Luckily, on both occasions I got the support I needed, but many people don’t.

ROOF COATINGS if your roof is looking old and tired, roof coatings are the answer; they come in several colours and are fully guaranteed. UPVC Our low maintenance, easy installation services mean no more painting for years to come. Quality UPVC means simply install and forget! All our work is guaranteed—Fully insured—Written estimates with every job. For a free estimate, free roof inspection, free quotation or free help and advice you may need about your roof, please don’t hesitate to contact Platinum Roofing And Repairs today.

people in West Sussex. As an independent charity with a small staff team and 400 volunteers, we support over 5,000 people in the county annually by providing advice and guidance through a wide range of practical support solutions to help them remain independent following sight loss WHY IS THERE A NEED? The prevalence of sight loss increases with age: currently there are almost 31,000 severely sight impaired or partially sighted people living in West Sussex. Many people experience homelessness in their lifetime, and for a wide variety of reasons. We will be discussing this at our next Voluntary Sector Forum, ‘Winter’s Coming’ event, Monday 11 September, 10am-12 noon. At this free event, we will bring together local not-for-profit organisations, hear excellent speakers and share information on the hard work of local organisations. This Forum is being organised by one of VAW’s Trustees, Scott Bell, from Worthing Churches Homeless Project. Spaces are limited, for more information and to book a place see vaworthing.org.uk.

For other networking and workshop opportunities for the voluntary sector – please see Here & Now listings page 41.

Since 1998, 4SIGHT has been providing a Sight Care Advisor service in the Eye Clinics at Worthing and St Richard’s Hospitals. Advisors offer practical and emotional support to help people newly diagnosed with the debilitating effects of sight loss rebuild their lives, which all the evidence suggests, produces better long-term outcomes for patients. As of September this year, 4SIGHT and Sight Support Worthing are joining forces to expand the Advisor service to help even more people living with the effects of sight loss. And with the new Eye Clinic at Southlands Hospital in Shoreham already showing a rise in the numbers of people needing help after diagnosis, we urgently need to find more volunteers and supporters to ensure both of our charities can help more local people.

So, if you would like to get involved in something that’s rewarding and can make a real difference to people in your community, please contact us— we would love to hear from you!

LOCAL BUSINESS DO YOU KNOW A GREAT ADUR AND WORTHING BASED BUSINESS WORTHY OF AN AWARD?

Adur & Worthing Business Awards 2017

N O M I N AT E TODAY!

THE ADUR & WORTHING BUSINESS AWARDS WAS ESTABLISHED IN 2007 AND IS THE BIGGEST BUSINESS AWARDS EVENT IN THE REGION. THESE AWARDS ARE NOW INDEPENDENTLY RUN AND ORGANISED UNDER THE UMBRELLA OF THE ADUR & WORTHING BUSINESS PARTNERSHIP (AWBP) AS A ‘NOT-FORPROFIT’ BUSINESS MODEL. James Stoner, a member of the existing committee and category sponsor recently commented “The awards are organised by the businesses for the businesses and by working together with the AWBP, we look forward to the continued success of one of the most prestigious events in the local business calendar”. Now in its 10th year, the awards continue to grow and establish a solid reputation within the local business community. The aim of the event is to showcase and celebrate the success of local businesses in the Adur and Worthing area, from small to large, and across all business sectors however diverse.

WHY ENTER? A business award gained either by winning an award category or just being a finalist, is often an overlooked marketing tool which can highlight your company and brand beyond the normal marketing routes. Electronic Temperature Instruments Ltd (ETI) a Worthing based thermometer manufacturer is thrilled to be the headline sponsor for the second year running. Peter Webb MBE, Managing Director of ETI commented “We are delighted to sponsor these awards which recognise achievements for

local businesses small and large, new and long standing - I started my business in 1983 as a small enterprise, however ETI has grown phenomenally and way beyond my wildest dreams”. ETI have won various accolades at the Adur & Worthing Business Awards, including the ‘Innovation’ award in 2015, ‘Overall Business of the Year’ and ‘Large Business of the Year’ in 2014. They were also extremely proud to have received the prestigious Queen’s Award for Enterprise for International Trade for the third time earlier this year, all of which have been great achievements for the company.

The Queen’s Awards for Voluntary Service & for Enterprise

Finance Corner IS NOW THE RIGHT TIME TO TAKE OUT A FIXED RATE MORTGAGE?

MATT SUTTON, MANAGING DIRECTOR OF EMERALD FINANCE, your local award winning financial advisers, is here to answers your financial questions. Got a query? Email on info@emeraldfinance.co.uk.

LET’S STEP UP TO THE MARK AND BID!

At the moment interest rates are some of the lowest that have ever been available and there are some amazing fixed rate deals available. Recently the Bank of England has warned of increasing interest rates as a pending Brexit looks to increase inflation to levels where this may be necessary. When this will happen is unknown, but general sentiment is that it’s likely to be sooner rather than later. Many of our clients are now taking out longer 5 year fixed rates, taking advantage of the low rates available to guarantee a stable monthly payment through Brexit and beyond,

often at a lower payment than they are currently paying. If you are on a standard variable rate or haven’t reviewed your mortgage for some time it’s worth reviewing with your mortgage adviser or pop in for a chat.

HOW DOES A LIFETIME MORTGAGE WORK? If you are retired or over 55 years of age and own your own home, a lifetime mortgage could enable you to unlock some of the money tied up in your property. This isn’t dependent on income but on age and property value and only ends when you pass away or move into care. This can be used to finance the extras you would like to afford,

such as: • Repaying an existing mortgage or debts to reduce monthly outgoings • Home improvements, a new car or a well-earned holiday • Helping the family or giving an early inheritance • Supplementing income each month with a drawdown facility

With a lifetime mortgage you can just pay the interest or, if you prefer, have no monthly payment and the interest will accrue. This is repaid on the eventual sale of your home, subject to the terms and conditions of each provider. Speak to one of our equity release specialists to see if this is right for you and for the options available.

THE AWBA ARTICLE, PAGE 22, includes comment from Peter Webb MBE, MD of ETI on the importance for people and organisations to be recognised through an Award. ETI is just one of our local businesses to have won the prestigious Queens Award for Enterprise for International Trade, ETI having achieved this Award for the 3rd time earlier this year. The Award recognises and celebrates business excellence in the UK. Another Worthing company, World of Books, have won a few awards over the years and this year, they also celebrated winning the same Queen’s Award. Congratulations to both companies. The Queen’s Awards also recognise the voluntary sector. Caroline Nicholls DL tells us why it’s so important for volunteer led groups to consider applying for

The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. “The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service was first launched 15 years ago in 2002 to mark the Queen’s Golden Jubilee - it is seen as a national benchmark for excellence in volunteering and presented only to the most outstanding volunteer led groups; It recognises volunteer led groups who are run locally, provide a service, meet a need for people living in the local community and are supported, recognised and respected by their community and the people who benefit from its work. Groups can be nominated at any time in a simple on line application process—but the assessment is thorough and rigorous. Since the awards were first launched some 26 West Sussex groups have

received awards—including recently Ferring Conservation Group in 2016 and, just this year Tangmere Aviation Museum and the Impact Tasty team. Applications are initially judged by local teams selected by The Lord Lieutenant of West Sussex Mrs Susan Pyper - including Worthing based Deputy Lieutenants Margaret Bamford OBE and Caroline Nicholls. At the recent launch of Voluntary Action Worthing’s new Trustee Club, Margaret and Caroline urged more local groups to consider applying. Said Caroline “In this year’s round only three organisations in the county applied; now Worthing is rich in the number and range of community groups and charities that do so much to make a difference to the quality of local lives - so we know there are organisations in

the town who could deserve royal recognition for their work. “Even applying for the award is a good test of whether the organisation is truly fulfilling its potential - and those who win gain so much in terms of pride and reputation as well as helping them with their membership and fundraising.” So as volunteer led groups and businesses set out their plans for the year ahead, it’s worth considering whether they can step up to the mark and bid for a Queen’s Award during 2018. Details of the awards and how to apply can be found on gov.uk/ queens-award-for-voluntaryservice and gov.uk/queens-awardsfor-enterprise

Van Break-Ins On The Rise Grant Langley

IN THE PAST 12 MONTHS, THERE HAS BEEN A WORRYING RISE IN VANS BEING BROKEN INTO AND TRADESMEN’S BUSINESSES BEING RUINED! Police have recorded a 60% rise in van break-ins where criminals seek the contents rather than the vehicle itself. With modern vans being increasing hard to steal thieves have set their sights on what’s inside, but how are they getting in, and how can you protect yourself from being the next victim? The two most popular methods for thieves to gain entry are by using, readily available, lock picks or the peel and steal method. Just by carrying a quick internet search it doesn’t take long to find a range of lock picks specifically designed to enter the most popular vehicles. In the UK, there is no restriction on the sale of locksmith equipment, so any ‘would be’ thief can purchase these, no questions asked. Admittedly using lock picks takes some skill so criminals are taking to peeling open doors and cutting open roofs. By forcing a rear door in the right place, the vehicles own security is overridden, allowing the thief to reach in and grab expensive tools and equipment. So how can you protect yourself from being the next victim? There is no 100% effective method of securing your contents so it’s always wise to make sure adequate insurance is in place, it’s a good idea to check that your policy covers your tools overnight as some companies exclude this

from their policies. But there are a few things you can do to help protect your livelihood. There are a range of aftermarket locks available that can be easily fitted to any van, these are stronger than the manufacturer locks and harder to pick. You can choose from rep locks, deadlock or slam locks, each offering a different level of protection. Thatcham approved alarms can give protection to the load area with additional door switches and infrared sensors. Some alarms even offer a function to phone you in the event of a break in. Installing a lockable tool safe with give you the option to secure the most valuable of tools, also keeping tools in boxes strapped into the van or secured into racking will help thwart a peel and steal theft. By following some of these measures you can help keep your valuable tools and equipment safe and make sure you don’t become another statistic.

BNI WORTHING

BNI WORTHING

Get it right and HR Works

The Happiest Networking Group in the World…

WHAT IS BNI, YOU SAY? WHY IS IT DIFFERENT TO OTHER NETWORKING GROUPS? BNI is a global business networking association which provides a platform for businesses across the world to appeal to other business in their area to act as a sales force for them. The difference is that BNI provides a rare opportunity for business owners or their representatives to forge close personal links with other local businesses, build knowledge and trust and therefore the confidence to refer each other to people and businesses outside of the group or to use the services of people within the group. BNI also only takes one person from each professional area of business. This October, Worthing BNI celebrates its 18th year. Such is the power and potential of membership, there’s a few people who have been members for over 15 years and continue to enjoy the many benefits that their membership provides.

Practical and meaningful HR packages tailored to your needs. Call Michelle on 07908 957113 www.hrworksconsultancy.com

WHAT IF MY BUSINESS DOESN’T DEAL WITH OTHER BUSINESSES? Some of our most successful members work in the services sector. The premise of BNI is that your fellow members act as a sales force for your business. So, trades such as plumbers, electricians, handymen, carpenters and roofers all traditionally benefit a great deal from membership; it’s not just for accountants and solicitors!

ARE THERE OTHER BENEFITS?

Photo: Ed Watts

HERE & NOW IS A FULLY PAID UP MEMBER OF WHAT IS ARGUABLY, THE HAPPIEST BNI NETWORKING GROUP IN THE WORLD. We challenge you to find a cheerier group of people talking business over breakfast at 6.30am (no typo here) every Thursday morning.

We meet every Thursday morning at 6.30am at the Dome Cinema, Worthing. We eat – breakfast starts at 6.40am and speak - very briefly, to the rest of the members, telling them our business type, what we can offer to people, and any specific businesses/locations we would like an introduction to.

Many businesses attribute a great deal of their early success to networking. It’s not just the work it brings in, but the ability to speak with people who have faced the same hurdles and are in a good position to offer advice and guidance. The benefit of both personal and professional support that a network of like minded business people can offer cannot be under estimated, especially in those vital first years of establishing a business.

It’s this process which helps to make it easy for fellow members to support and promote our businesses to their contacts. These two hours, once a week, before most people’s working day begins, help us develop those strong relationships we all rely on in our businesses, whatever they may be.

GO ON, SELL IT TO ME!

That’s easy! Try us out, book yourself in for a visit. Like we said, BNI Worthing is a friendly bunch, (some say we’re the friendliest) so if you’d like to book in for a visit, or just want to learn a bit more about what you could gain from BNI Worthing, visit bniworthing.co.uk, email info@bniworthing. co.uk or call Jim on 07711 948 990, we look forward to meeting you!

BNI is the biggest and most successful organisation of its type in the world. The breakfast meetings are deliberately and carefully structured to help each business make the most of their membership.

Staying Out For The Summer – Dodgy Come To St Pauls

WHAT’S ON IN WORTHING

22 SEPTEMBER 8PM, ST PAUL’S WORTHING

In the mid 1990’s at the peak of “Britpop”, Dodgy the bottle blonde, Midlands band with a bag full of feel good songs such as “Good Enough” and “Staying out for the summer” tried to meld their engagement with social issues, love of the sound of the 60’s and insidious earworms to create the perfect pop moment. I managed to catch up with leadsinger and songwriter Nigel Clarke as he prepared to play at the Lytham festival, to talk about Worthing, song writing and why it would be great to be a Castaway with Aphex Twin. What comes across throughout the interview is that as well as being a really genuine, grounded guy, Nigel still loves being in a band and really enjoys playing live.

NC: Again, it’s been one of those things, we managed to get about 1 review, and the record company didn’t get any of the pre sales registered for the charts so we missed out on that which actually helped. We were basically ignored and the weird thing is it started to pick up abroad, in mad places like Chile, Brazil and America. It’s a really good album and we are just sorting out a new deal for an album on a new label in 2019.

After some initial small talk, we got down to some questions.

RK: Are you writing songs at the moment?

Rob Kelly: I think you last played Worthing in 2012 is that right?

NC: I am writing songs at the moment, I am always writing songs, all the time.

Nigel Clarke: Yes we did, by the train station I think, but haven’t been back since but I was thinking ahead of this interview that Worthing was the first ever” Dodgy Club” event outside London. That was in 1993, we did it on Worthing Pier and bus loads of Dodgy fans came down for the Saturday night and we had a whole Dodgy club with clowns and hoopla and other bands and had a fantastic time. We weren’t part of the “Manchester scene”, we weren’t part of the “Grebo” Wonder Stuff Stourbridge scene, and so with the Dodgy club we adopted a town for the day and just turned up and it was a brilliant day in Worthing and kind of shaped the way of Dodgy really. RK: How has last year’s album “What are we fighting for” gone down?

30

stranded on a desert island with someone called Richard who would it be? NC: Richard D James from Aphex Twin. I think just taking Aphex Twin and saying to him “so how do you do it, so where do you start to create like that?” would be a great thing to do. Sadly, Nigel had to dash off to get ready as the band prepared to share the bill with Human League and Midge Ure.

What came across while chatting to Nigel is he is still enjoying himself, he promised that Dodgy will bring a great show to St Paul’s and that they are really excited about returning to Worthing, a place close to the band’s heart. So, make sure you snap up your tickets before the event sells out.

An SPW presentation

NC: No, I was going to do a solo album and then we put out the “What are we fighting for”, and I thought let’s make the next one a Dodgy album too, I write the songs anyway so my songs are Dodgy songs. RK: What can we expect from the gig at St Pauls?

There are few musicians who can boast a career as long and distinguished as that of Turkish pianist IDIL BIRET, who returns to the Assembly Hall stage to perform with Worthing Symphony Orchestra on Sunday 1 October. Since the age of 16, Idil Biret has given concerts throughout the world performing with all the major orchestras including LSO, Boston Symphony, Warsaw Philharmonic, Sydney Symphony, Orchestre National de France... and has collaborated with eminent conductors including Adrian Boult, Malcolm Sargent, Charles Mackerras and Aaron Copland. Over the years, Idil Biret has made more than 70 recordings for EMI and Naxos including world premieres of the 9 Beethoven Symphonies, and the complete solo piano works and concertos of Chopin, Brahms and Rachmaninov. She has recently recorded a selection of Mozart concertos, working in collaboration with WSO’s John Gibbons and the London Mozart players.

RK: Is that solo stuff or the next Dodgy album?

NC: Probably be a bit of acoustic, a couple of really new (unrecorded) songs maybe on my own, then with the band, some of the hits from the 90’s and a few songs from the last album, we will mix it up really. It will be a good night, we just love playing.

JOE BUNN’S BARDIC TRIALS

Let’s make a landmark. London has loads of landmarks. That gherkin building, the bridges that people sing songs about, that big clock that summons Dick Whittington back. France has the Eiffel tower. Blackpool has the Blackpool Eiffel tower. Brighton has that big pole with a doughnut on that everyone hates. Even Lancing has that stain on a wall that looks a bit like a man. And Worthing has its landmarks too, we’ve got the pier, the Dome cinema, and it’s all a bit dull and done. I want new landmarks. I want landmarks for the people.

September 2017

Recently I came upon the idea of creating a ‘People’s Bandstand’. Parcel out the different portions of a bandstand to different arty sectors of town, then assemble it back where it used to be. Make it a little bigger, and a lot more decorative.

Juliette & The Romeos , Duke Of Wellington (Shm). 9pm, FREE

But why stop there? A landmark is anything that people can recognise and it allows them to establish their location. So let’s make some landmarks. You could do anything. Why not carve a large statue of Jane Austen out of Butter in your back garden? Or, failing that, assemble the biggest pile of chalk stones on the beach you can manage. Trim yourself a stonehenge out of the bushes near your house, call it ‘Stonehedge’. Or even, if you’re feeling especially crafty, build a folly just in front of your garage, maybe in the shape of Worthing’s most famous animal, the seagull. Whatever you do, make it noticeable, bright, and above all, make it your own. We Worthingites are the best landmarks this town could have, and we just need to make this obvious to everyone else by building ridiculous structures that represent our very being. So until next time, happy landmarking, Bardwatchers, and I’ll talk to you again soon.

PREVIEW: SEPTEMBER @ BAR 42

With all of the large acts gracing Worthing in September, you could be forgiven for forgetting about the smaller venues of Worthing. I’m picking out Bar 42 this month, as the gigs Mark Knowles (owner) has given me have definitely kept pace with the larger venues. There is an international pedigree to 42’s September gigs, with the venue being visited by Skywalker from the Czech Republic. The post-hardcore outfit has made a number of festival appearances this summer before going on tour, including Brutal Assault (I’ve seen them here!).

Shauna Parker Band , Piston Broke (Shm). 8:30pm, FREE

Also performing at 42 are Suburbs, from France, and rock bands Black Orchid Empire and Porshyne, from London and Brighton respectively. Supplemented by local nights, such as Reckless Intentions and Worthing’s contribution to the ‘Sounds 4 Hounds’ charity event, (24 Sept 1-4pm), this is looking to be an awesome month for the 42 scene.

Dead Beat Angels , Farmers Arms (Lancing). FREE

Get down to Bar 42 and enjoy some music you haven’t heard before!

Sat 30 September An Evening With Nik Kershaw , Assembly Hall. 8pm, £25 - £29.50 exc. bf - Pop

THEATRE LISTINGS

King Arthur: Reviving a legendary tale What is it about this tale that has made it such a timeless classic? Is it the magical Merlin, the excitement of Excalibur being pulled from the stone or perhaps the medieval mythological figure King Arthur himself, head of the kingdom of Camelot and the Knights of the Round Table. It is not known whether Arthur really existed, though there are rumours he may have been a Roman-affiliated military leader who successfully staved off a Saxon invasion during the 5th to 6th centuries… As natural born storytellers, it is little wonder we have transformed this fantasy into a classic story that has been told for hundreds of years, in fact its first written recorded account was in the 1130s by Geoffrey of Monmouth. It has since been published and recreated thousands of times in books, and we are now lucky enough to live in an age of television and live theatre, so we can experience this story unfolding in front of our very eyes. Some of the most well-known adaptions include the BBC1 Television series Merlin (2008-2012), the most recent short-lived series Camelot (2011) and NBC’s 90s miniseries Merlin (1998) starring Sam Neill, which rather than focusing on Arthur’s coming-of-age story was a glorious romp into the magic, power struggles and humanity from Merlin’s perspective. But of course,

my personal favourite and surely the most glorious adaptation has to be Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975), mixing John Cleese and the gang with more slapstick humour than you can shake a stick at. The Worthing Musical Comedy Society last year excellently staged their version of Spamalot, which starred my colleague Mark, a delightful princess being just one of his many interesting characters. So to the present day, and at the Connaught Theatre on Saturday 30 September we welcome the awardwinning Story Pocket Theatre Company with their adaptation of Michael Morpurgo’s King Arthur, an epic tale of deep magic, heroism, love and betrayal from the author of War Horse. This fast-moving show of adventure, physical theatre, puppetry and outstanding storytelling awaits brave adventurers ages 7 and beyond… come and experience this legendary tale, revived.

King Arthur is live on stage at the Connaught Theatre, Worthing on Saturday 30 September at 2pm and 7pm. Tickets are available from worthingtheatres.co.uk or by calling the box office on 01903 206206.

THE WORTHING BYPASS

BOSS BUILDING CONTRACTORS LTD

This column will not change your taste in Art REGISTER

BOSS PROPERTY MAINTENANCE & HANDY MAN SERVICE

WHATEVER YOUR THOUGHTS ON GRAFFITI, you have to give the fine burghers of Worthing their props for inviting artist Ricky Also to spray paint the multi-storey car park: it’s gratifying to graffiti-fy the Grafton. ‘Right now’ indeed: witty and with it, just like this column if it were either of those things. Good on you Ricky, I’d invite you to do a job on the neighbour’s shed but I couldn’t afford you and the neighbours can be a tad tetchy when it comes to home invasion. You see, multi-storey car parks are by definition soul destroying concrete monstrosities designed to peel the paint work off your beloved Corvette and charge you extortionate amounts as you simultaneously spend money in the town centre. In the interests of balance, it should also be noted that car parks are also an invaluable and intrinsic element of our economic structure and should be applauded for ripping us off.

BOSS PLUMBING, HEATING & ELECTRICAL

Adding a little colour and life to Worthing sea front is exactly what we need, especially after watching the superb film Dunkirk and discerning what must surely be a continuity error as the 1940s set French sea side town looks remarkably modern and would put contemporary Brighton to shame, if it had any.

BOSS BATHROOM & KITCHENS

I must confess to not always being enamoured by modern art, it being a subjective quagmire lending itself to overt persecution and accusations of pretentiousness – the latter being the one thing I

BOSS

am an expert on. Seated opposite a mass of dots masquerading as cutting-edge art in a swanky Soho eatery, I grumbled about the meaningless blitz of colour offending my vision until the maître de informed us that it was a Hurst, Damian, he of eviscerated sharks. “Grrghh…” I growled, which as art criticism goes, pretty much said it all. Sometime later the Beloved Hackette took me to my even more beloved Florence so I could rejoice in ostentatious delight at the Renaissance, as if I understood a jot. It was whilst touring the Palazzo Vecchio that we stumbled on an

… “Grrghh…” I growled, which as art criticism goes, pretty much said it all… exhibition of the shark-slaying cow-slicer himself; incongruent it seemed amongst the throng of religious iconography. In hindsight however it was entirely compatible with the home of many an execution, not least Hannibal ‘the Cannibal’ Lector’s disembowelling of the fictional detective Rinaldo Pazzi, descendent of the factual Pazzi conspirators hung by the surprisingly real

Medici godfather Lorenzo ‘the Magnificent’ (a fine sobriquet compared to his father, Piero ‘the Gouty’ and son, Piero ‘the Unfortunate’; the trick was to avoid being named Piero). In spite of previous indifference, the sight of two Uzi clad police officers grabbed our attention and we were escorted as a small group into a pitchblack room to witness ‘For the Love of God’ – a platinum cast of an 18th-century human skull encrusted with over 8,000 diamonds. It was a truly dazzling work of art, at once spell-binding, eerie and uplifting. I was hooked and came to appreciate the genius of the Turner prize winning artist, although I haven’t been back to the same restaurant: naff is naff, whomever chances their spontaneous arty arm after a heavy night out. If Banksy’s not going to visit Worthing – goodness knows I’ve tried – then we might as well commission our own stuff to brighten the less salubrious parts of town. Teville Gate could certainly do with a makeover: how about dissected cows and decapitated donkeys adorning the outside of the car park whilst a laser light show blinds us on entry and bright fluorescent walls mask the Porsche paintwork scratches around every bend? No? Well, if you’ve got any better ideas then write in, ‘right now’, or better still jog on; it is at the end of the day all frightfully subjective.
