Take four male celebrities of a certain age, bring them on an epic trek through Asia and watch what happens. That’s the conceit behind the new unscripted NBC series “Better Late Than Never.” Premiering Tuesday, Aug. 23, the fish-out-of-water comedy event follows TV legends Henry Winkler (“Happy Days”) and William

“Here’s what’s interesting: We’re all the same,” Winkler says. “I watched George Foreman, who is a mountain of a man, lie down on a thatched mat on a platform covered by a thatched roof open on three sides, and these children 2-, 3-, 4-years-old, came over to him in Thailand and they could have been his grandchildren. Without knowing the language but only the language of laughter, they

started making up games together and jumping on him. I mean, I saw it. I met these children in Kyoto at a sumo wrestling match, their mom and dad came, and with no language we laughed together and created masterpieces in the gravel we were sitting on.” As for himself, Winkler found himself bonding with a “local” of another species in Thailand.

School trafﬁc to be altered

Parents who take children to school will have to embrace some unfamiliar routines when it comes to their morning commutes when the 201617 school year opens Aug. 22. The most noticeable will be two intersections along 25 Mile Avenue. Since a summer accident necessitated a temporary traffic signal at the 25 Mile Avenue-Moreman Street, the light’s cycle has also been altered to accommodate anticipated traffic turning from 25 Mile onto Moreman to get to Hereford Junior High and Northwest Elementary. “While there isn’t a protected [turn] arrow, the signal no longer permits north and south traffic to enter the intersection simultaneously,” Hereford Police Chief Brent Harrison said. “If you are travelling northbound and the light is green, then you can turn.” Drivers should still exercise caution as the burden of navigating the intersection safely still rests with the motorist, Harrison said. Local districts set free, reduced lunch policy From Contributed Sources Both Hereford (HISD) and Walcott (WISD) independent school districts announced their policy for providing free and reduced-price meals for children served under the current income eligibility guidelines. Each school/site or central office in the respective district has a copy of the policy, which may be reviewed by anyone on request. On Aug. 6, HISD began distributing letters to the households of enrolled children about eligibility benefits and any

actions households need to take to apply for these benefits. Applications can also be obtained as HISD Administration Building on 25 Mile Avenue. WISD will begin distributing its letters on Aug. 22, and applications also are available at Walcott ISD, 4275 Hwy 214, Hereford, Texas, 79045. The following criteria will be used to determine a child’s eligibility for free or reduced-price meal benefits – household income that is at or below the income eligibility levels; households receiving Supplemental Nutrition

Assistance Program (SNAP), Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF); or Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR); a child’s status as a foster child, homeless, runaway, migrant, or displaced by a declared disaster; and enrollment in Head Start or Even Start For those households that qualify for free or reduced-price meals based on income, an adult in the household must fill out free and reduced-price meal application and return it to the school system.

We’re still waiting on the trail Does it seem to you like this presidential campaign may never end? We're with you. But even with all we've been through – the speeches, debates, conventions and commercials – there is still much of significance we're waiting for the candidates to say or do. You want examples? Here are three. Donald, show us your taxes. It's a pact that every modern campaign for the presidency has accepted. You want Americans to turn over control of the executive branch of the government – including the IRS – over to you? First, voters get to peak at the candidate's own tax returns. Candidate Trump initially said he'd do just that. He soon reneged. Refusing to turn over tax returns – whether you're being audited or not – is astoundingly brazen. And it's not just because it so clearly breaks with tradition. How in the world can voters trust him if he won't even show them what his tax returns show? For someone who has argued so explicitly that his business success and personal wealth help prove he'd make a swell president, he sure seems shy about sharing his numbers. Voters should demand he relent, or simply refuse to vote for him. Hillary, face the press This is a quiz for Hillary Clinton and campaign staff. Which of the following count as press conferences? A. Stopping before or after a campaign event and answering one or two questions from traveling reporters. B. Agreeing to give hand-picked journalists one-on-one interviews from time to time. C. Answering questions from the crowd at a journalism conference. D. Appearing in public often and speaking about your plans. Right, the answer is none. And more to the point, Clinton's continued refusal to hold traditional press conferences only adds to concerns that, should she win in November, hers could be a dangerously isolated presidency. What's the big deal with press conferences? Transparency, of course. But also they can introduce a randomness that oh-so-carefully-calibrated campaigns can't always control, or even anticipate. That's good for voters. But it can also be good for the president, or the candidate. Candidates and presidents alike tend to live in bubbles. They need to be exposed to questions, even ideas, from people they can't fire. Meanwhile, the rest of the country ... It's easy to forget that the rest of the government – from the White House to Congress – doesn't get to treat the campaign like a vacation. Least ways, they shouldn't. We're still waiting on plenty of things from them, too. That ninth justice on the Supreme Court? Still waiting on that; the Senate still shamefully refuses to do its job. Funding for Zika? Democrats and Republicans are still squabbling. The President's massive trade deal with Asia? Still on ice. Sen. John Cornyn's ambitious (and smart) criminal justice reform is still stalled.

They kept the “home place” and continued farming and ranching until 1944. As a semi-retired farmer and rancher, J.C. worked for their son Jimmie in the Phillips 66 Oil Agency until 1963. He then fully retired to work on clocks in their home, but continued to deliver the mail to Allred Oil for several years. The Allreds were dedicated church members. J.C. served as deacon for many years – first at Palo Duro Baptist Church and later at Hereford's First Baptist Church. Both J.C and Della taught Sunday school classes for many years. J.C. and Della moved into Kings Manor in 1971, where Della died in December 1972. J.C. died in 1980. During their lifetimes, they saw progress from covered wagons to space travel. For more than 90 years, they saw many more changes – mostly for the good of all. “Like branches on a tree, we may grow in different directions, yet our roots remain as one.” Anon

AUSTIN – Voters will have more options when presenting personal identification at the polls for the Nov. 8 general election, Texas Secretary of State Carlos Cascos announced last week. Pursuant to an Aug. 10 federal court order, Cascos said, if a voter is not able to obtain one of the seven forms of approved photo ID, the voter may vote by: (1) signing a declaration at the polls explaining why the voter is unable to obtain one of the seven forms of approved photo ID; and (2) providing one of various forms of supporting documentation. Supporting documentation can be an original, certified birth certificate, a valid voter registration certificate or one of the following: - Current utility bill; - Bank statement; - Government check; - Paycheck; or - Other government document that shows the name and address of the voter. The seven forms of approved photo ID are: - Texas driver license issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety; - Texas personal identification card issued by DPS; - Texas license to carry a handgun issued by DPS; - U.S. military identification card containing the person’s photograph; - U.S. citizenship certificate containing the person’s photograph; or - U.S. passport. The court-ordered change to voting requirements came after the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit in July ruled Texas’ stringent “voter ID” law put an unconstitutional burden on minority voters. The Fifth Circuit instructed U.S. District Judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos of Corpus Christi to approve less-restrictive requirements, which she did. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton agreed to the changes in requirements for the November election, but said he plans to file an appeal. Voters with questions about how to cast a ballot may call 1-800-252-VOTE. Death linked to Zika An infant who died in Harris County recently had microcephaly linked to the Zika virus, the Texas Department of State Health Services announced Aug. 9. During her pregnancy, the agency said, the mother was in Latin America, where she was infected. The baby acquired the infection in the womb and test results confirmed the baby’s condition and link to Zika. The DSHS has been emphasizing precautions, specifically for travelers and pregnant women, through an ongoing public education campaign and via www.TexasZika. org. Lady Whitefaces rebound for title From Staff Reports MANSFIELD – Overcoming an opening loss, the Hereford Lady Whiteface volleyball team rode their killer to the Challenger Bracket championship of the annual Mansfield Rotary Volleyball Tournament. The tournament took place Thursday-Saturday, Aug. 11-13 and featured two daily matches. After dropping their opener, 21-25, 14-25 to Trinity, the Lady Herd put together four straight sweeps to advance to Saturday’s Challenger Bracket final. Starting the run Thursday, the Lady Whitefaces saw senior Meagan Ellis knock down 11 kills, while Chandler Vogel had 14 assists and Alexus Carbajal 11 digs in a 25-21, 25-19 win over El Paso Americas. Ellis had seven kills and Josalynn Lara added five in a 25-14, 25-13 romp over

West early Friday. Brianne Bartels finished with three aces, while Vogel had 10 assists and four digs. Alyssa Vallejo chipped in six assists and four digs. A positive opening to preseason practice has the Hereford Whitefaces pawing the ground to get along the trail of the 2016 football season. The Herd began fall workouts last week in anticipation of Aug. 26’s season opener at Estacado. “The first week went great,” Hereford coach Don DeLozier said. “There was lots of retention, lots of hard work and lots of good attitude. “It was fun to get started again.” Looking to rebound from a disappointing 2-8 2015 campaign that ended on a seven-game losing streak and included an 0-5, last-place finish in District 3-5A, the Whitefaces have a myriad of holes to fill in the lineup and production. While improvements are needed in most areas, the running game and defense are among the most in need. “In this second week, we’re going to continue our implementation of things to get ready to play,” DeLozier said. “We’re going to fine tune the things we got in last week and get in new stuff.” With the program in need of turning a corner after sub-par seasons, the Herd looks to be making strides in that direction. Having opted to delay the start of fall practice from Aug. 1 to Aug. 8, DeLozier and staff have already seen the benefits of swapping five early workouts with 15 spring practices. “We have most definitely made progress,” DeLozier

A flurry of play to open last week has the Hereford Whiteface and Lady Whiteface tennis team standing at 3-5 on the young fall season. After getting smoked by perennial powerhouses Monterey, 18-1, and Coronado, 15-4, to start the season Aug. 9, the Herd hit the trail for an annual tour of the Metroplex – where they took on Corsicana, Ennis, Granbury, Centennial, Paschal and Boswell in dual matches over three days. “All six of those teams were in the playoffs last year,” Hereford coach Cody Crouch said. “Five were in the 5A playoffs, and Paschal was a 6A playoff team.” Standing 0-2 when Metroplex play began, the Herd was soon at 0-5 following a 16-3 loss to Ennis, 12-4 loss to Corsicana and 10-7 loss to Granbury. Hampered by the absence of his

No. 1 boys singles, Crouch said Ennis was the only team that “jumped on us and beat us down.” The hardest of the three losses was to Granbury, where the Herd went 0-4 in third-set tiebreakers and was tied in the third set in two of those. Also in that match, Hereford’s Jacen Saenz was up a set and ahead 4-0 in the second before faltering. “We had five match points in one of those [tiebreakers] and couldn’t convert,” Crouch said. “I hope that matches like this will make us better and more mentally tough as we get to the district season.” The Herd followed that slow start by putting together a three-match win streak after topping Paschal (11-3), Boswell (14-5) and Centennial (13-6). Both Nino and Collier saw varsity action as back-ups last season, and Collier spent most of the year as JV starting QB. DeLozier comes in as part of a highly touted sophomore class. Coaches have remained tightlipped and essentially noncommittal in who is leading the signal-caller race. With sons of the head coach and an assistant in the hunt, coach DeLozier is looking for the battle for playing time and the starting spot to be determined â&#x20AC;&#x153;on the grass.â&#x20AC;? A pleasant surprise during the first week of drills has been the emergence of several senior leaders. By George Dickie You just opened a restaurant in Brooklyn, N.Y. Can you talk about it? Yes. Carla Hall’s Southern Kitchen and it’s fast casual, meaning that you just come up, you order at the counter and then servers will bring you your food. But it’s not a sit-down restaurant, no reservations or anything like that. And the focus is Nashville’s Hot Chicken and southern fried, so it’s pretty simple. We have mixed drinks and batched cocktails and mocktails, plenty of sweet tea and lemonade. Did you do this during hiatus? It seems like you couldn’t do this while “The Chew” is in production. No, I did (chuckles). We actually opened on Memorial Day, so the month leading up to it and then on Memorial Day. So I was doing both and I was just more tired than I have ever been in my life. Twenty-hour days – it was really crazy.

She’s toned everything in her life down and has become more real, so that was a really fun thing to play with. And the song celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, so to see it have this new life is incredible. You were a contestant on “The Celebrity Apprentice.” What do you think of Donald Trump’s presidential bid? You can’t agree with everything that someone says, but I will say that what I enjoy about Mr, Trump is that he truly does not care what people think, in the sense that he can’t be bought. I think that’s what people both love and can’t stand about him.
