Letter from the Executive Director 2016 was a great year for the Chamber, and we are very excited about the prospects of 2017. Past President Lindsay Chandler did a great job in leading your organization and the board of directors. Her enthusiasm sparked a lot of participation and kept everyone on the move to “Make It Better in Hereford.” Many thanks to Lindsay for her outstanding leadership in 2016. As we begin the 2017 Campaign, President Sharon Hodges will provide the same proven leadership for the Chamber. She is full of enthusiasm and is willing to work to achieve the goals and ideals of this organization. Sharon wants to see good things for Hereford and is committed to making this a better place to live and raise a family. You’re going to enjoy Sharon’s year as your president.

Everyone in the organization will do everything possible to showcase Hereford at every opportunity. We will strive to put our best foot forward in representation of you – the members – and to maintain an atmosphere where you can certainly do business in Hereford. At the same time, we will make every effort to sustain the great quality of life that we all enjoy in this wonderful community. I’m confident that the future is bright for Hereford and many more things will be accomplished in the months ahead. We want to thank you for your membership, your sponsorship, your participation and your dedication to the Chamber. You are what makes Hereford great. Sid C. Shaw Executive Director

Chamber Hall of Fame Award

The Deaf Smith County Chamber of Commerce Hall of Fame Award is designed to honor someone who has served the chamber for a long period of time and who has demonstrated leadership, commitment and dedication to the goals and ideals of the chamber.

The honor is not restricted to gender and does not reflect one single service. It does consider all areas of service and indicates an individual’s hard work and community pride. The hall induction and recognition of the honoree is held at the annual chamber banquet. Award-

ees are presented a plaque recognizing their induction. The chamber executive committee selects the annual honoree based on their overall worthiness and contributions made to the chamber. Nominees are not accepted from businesses or

DSC Chamber has morphed, evolved into 21st century By John Carson BRAND Managing Editor For approaching 90 years, the Deaf Smith County Chamber of Commerce has been a focal point for business, community leadership and, of course, commerce. Like anything that has been around for almost a century, there has to maturation and evolution to survive in a world that from 1930 to today has seen the most dramatic change in the history of civilization. Few places are more evident of those changes than the Deaf Smith County of Commerce. From the days of gatherings of local business owners for drinks, dinner and gossip to the veritable warranted and shameless promotion of local businesses to a modern-day viable marketing tool, the local chamber has seen its role morph as the 20th century turned to the 21st. “The chamber is not just a rah-rah voice for local business anymore,” DSC Chamber executive director Sid Shaw said. “Membership is more than just a monthly meeting, annual banquet and feel-good civic organization. Membership now has genuine value. “We have one of the standout chambers in the area. That is not bragging. It is just a fact.” In his 18th year at the chamber’s helm, Shaw – who took over as director in 1999 – has presided over much of the increase in that membership value. The most significant piece of the chamber’s expanding scope, according to Shaw, has been the proliferation of electronic technology – most specifically, the Internet. “The tools available via the Internet have created a better

Deaf Smith County Chamber of Commerce executive director Sid Shaw works on a full calendar of chamber-sponsored events for 2017, that include the annual Tierra Blanca Golf Classic, City-Wide Garage Sale, Hereford SuperShoot, annual Christmas Parade of Lights and a new event for early June on the grounds of Deaf Smith County Courthouse. environment to expand and improve business in the county,” he said. “We have been able to expand our footprint across the entire Panhandle and state through communication with other chambers, as well as regional and state agencies and organizations. “We now have the ability to work with other agencies – particularly local ones – to improve the community.” Shaw specifically noted the use of immediate electronic

communication in working other community entities – most notably Amarillo College and Leadership Hereford – to avoid a duplication of efforts, whether they be instructional and informative gatherings or fundraising. The result of that has been an encompassing growth in the local chamber during the first decade-and-a-half of the new century. “We have grown in membership and in the services provided to members,’ Shaw said.

“We have also seen our ability to promote Hereford and Deaf Smith County improve. “It has just created a better environment to expand and improve business.” Therein lies where the chamber of the past and the chamber of the present find their commonality. Regardless of the times, the fundamental reasons for becoming a chamber member have changed very little. “By being a member, you are

affiliated with like-minded people who want to improve the community – economically, business-wise and beyond,” Shaw said. “The chamber provides members with an opportunity to make a difference. It gives people a voice and chance to be a part of making their overall community better. “There is a commonality of fellowship with fellow members, as well as opportunities for a number of other

things.” A vital part of the DSC and Hereford community since 1929, the local chamber has seen its own presence grow as its reach into various aspect of the overall community has expanded during the 21st century. Always assured that the chamber was there for its annual banquet – a notable and much-anticipated yearly soiree in any community – induction of hall of fame members and co-sponsorship with the city for the annual Christmas Parade of Lights – local residents have seen the chamber extend its fingers above and beyond the tenet of business promotion.

Since coming on board as director, Shaw – who served as chamber president in 1998 – has overseen the addition of numerous events to the chamber calendar that have become expected and successful traditions. “The highlight of my time as director has been the quality of programs we do,” Shaw said. The most obvious of those is the annual Tierra Blanca Golf Classic at John Pitman Municipal Golf Course – which Shaw said was to “local golf what Spicer Gripp is to roping.” First organized in almost hurried fashion – and amid reaction that it could not be successfully done in so short a time

– the Tierra Blanca Classic immediately became a hit. Readying for its 13th edition in 2017, the tournament has become a state-wide favorite – attracting teams from Dallas, San Antonio, Midland and Odessa, as well as throughout the Panhandle. In fact, the event is so popular the field is annually a packed house with a waiting list for those wanting to take part. As evidence of its popularity, Shaw cited more than one business sponsor who uses the tourney as a respite for employees. The key there, Shaw added with a smile, is that adds thousands of dollars to local business coffers through hotel

rooms, dining and shopping. Another annual event is the City-wide Garage Sale each summer, while raising a limited amount of funds specifically for the chamber, the event does attract people to town from throughout the region. A relatively new event that is growing in popularity is the Hereford Super Shoot, now in its third year. In addition to its ongoing Hereford Bucks program, which Shaw said has been extremely successful, the chamber was able to put a feather back in its cap in 2016 when plans were cemented to return and maintain an

annual Independence Day fireworks show – again, an event that draws attendance from the entire Panhandle. Shaw added that a new annual event, which has yet to be named, is being organized for early June on the grounds of Deaf Smith County Courthouse. Open to the public, the event will feature “a bunch of cookers,” vendors and live music. While the overall scope of what a chamber does has gone through a metamorphosis over

the decades, all that change has been made on the foundation of why the organization was conceived and created. “Promote, promote, promote is still the keyword,” Shaw said. “It is all about bringing people to Hereford for events, to stay in town and spend their money. It is also good branding for a business and affords good opportunities to be recognized for your business and overall. “The bottom line is the chamber is a trusted source for the community.”
