Hereford BR ND Traffic accident claims Middleton

City OKs YMCA funds

By John Carson BRAND Managing Editor

Under a pall of grief over the news that former commissioner and city business leader Max Middleton has been killed in a traffic accident, the Hereford City Commission quickly dispatched business during Monday’s regular meeting. News of Middleton’s death has spread earlier in the day and was a topic among officials at Monday’s Joint Entities luncheon. Prior to the Monday’s meeting, commissioners took a moment during their invocation to express condolences before proceeding. In a light agenda, commissioners had five items listed, but only tackled four as the naming of a park at the intersection of Star Street and Park Avenue was tabled until next month. Commissioners did give approval to their annual funding contribution to Hereford and Vicinity YMCA. “This is their annual funding request,” Hereford City Manager Rick Hanna said. “We normally make the contribution in October, so it was time.” The funding amount of $12,500 was renewed for this year. Hanna told commissioners during their work session the Y contribution had been $10,000 annually, but went up “several years ago” to the current amount. “It is money well spent,” Mayor Tom Simons said. “There are lots of things going on there. It is great for the town’s youth.” Reappointments were also made to a pair of city boards. Commissioners then went into a brief closed session – as provided by state law – to discuss possible water acquisitions.

Playoff war

Herd netters face rugged postseason path By John Carson BRAND Managing Editor As if district realignment did not make just returning to playoffs hard enough, the Hereford Whiteface tennis team faces no easy task when the postseason begins Thursday. As the fourth seed from District 3-5A, the Herd are staring down the barrel of District 4 champion and Class 5A sixthranked Lubbock High. “Lubbock is one of the toughest teams we will play this year,” Hereford coach Cody Crouch said. “They are very, very strong at the top of their lineups – boys and girls. “They aren’t as tough at the bottom as other really good teams, but they are still solid throughout.” Fortunately for the Whitefaces, facing a state-ranked team is nothing new. District realignment increased 3-5A from six to eight teams with Amarillo High and Plainview added. The addition meant that six 2015 playoff teams would be vying for the district’s four postseason berths in 2016. On top of that, district teams Amarillo and Randall have spent the entire season ranked among the state’s top 10. In terms of what will be needed to be successful Thursday, Crouch jokingly replied that moving to 4A or another area would work before saying hope springs eternal. “Although it is a team sport, it still takes 10 individual wins,” Crouch PLEASE SEE PLAYOFFS | 2A

A two-vehicle accident Monday just north of Hereford left one man injured and another dead. The incident marks the fourth fatality and fifth overall traffic death involving a Deaf Smith County resident in the past three months. According to reports from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), Hereford businessman and former city commissioner Max Middleton was killed when he crashed into the back of a tractortrailer at a construction zone near town. At approximately 9:50 a.m., Monday, reports show that 63-yearold Alfred Sanders of Hereford was driving a 2005 Mack truck-tractor towing a semi-trailer northbound on U.S. 385 roughly a mile north of Hereford. While Sanders was legally stopped in a construction zone by road work, MIDDLETON Middleton, who was also northbound, approached in a 2016 Ford pick-up. Reports showed Middleton did not stop and “crashed” into the back of the semitrailer. Middleton, 51, was taken to Hereford Regional Medical Center (HRMC), where he later died and was pronounced dead by Dr. Earl Chase. Also taken to HRMC, Sanders was treated and released. DPS reports noted that neither driver was wearing a seatbelt. The reason why Middleton failed to stop is unknown at this time, DPS officials said, as the incident remains under investigation. Owner of M.K. Middleton Inc. in Hereford, Middleton also served on two local elected boards. He was a member of the Hereford Independent School District (HISD) Board of Trustees and Hereford City Commission. MIddleton served on the HISD board from 2003-05. He first joined the Hereford City Commission in 2009 to fill the unexpired term of Wayne Winget. He was officially elected to the seat in May 2010 and re-elected in May 2012. Middleton was forced to step down from the commission in October 2012 when he moved to a different city district. “He was truly a good guy,” Hereford City Manager Rick Hanna said. “We are going to miss him. His character and charisma will be missed. “He was very analytical. He had the ability to see things from more than one side, and that is very important – and rare – in an elected official.” Funeral services for Middleton are scheduled for 2 p.m., Thursday at First United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at West Park Cemetery.

Deaf Smith County Sheriff's Office: Meet the Candidates

Reyna banking on experience Butler wants to continue service From Staff Reports Looking at what he can bring to the table is the main reason Fidel Reyna Jr. is making a run to be the top law enforcement officer in Deaf Smith County. Reyna, an Independent, is looking to unseat incumbent Sheriff J. Dale Butler in the Nov. 8 general election. “I have a combined total of 30 years of law enforcement experience,” Reyna said. “I feel that my combined skills and experiences have given me the unique opportunity to gain valuable knowledge into the many aspects of the law enforcement field. “It has allowed me to understand

the relationships of local, state and federal law enforcement agencies, their strengths, weaknesses and how to avoid some pitfalls.” A U.S. Army veteran, Reyna has also been a member of the Army Reserves and Texas Army National Guard. A former state parole officer, Reyna spent eight years as an investigator with the Deaf Smith County Sheriff’s Office (DSCSO). Specifically running to contribute to the fight against crime and improve the service of the sheriff’s office, Reyna has several issues – most connected to specific criminal activity – he sees as PLEASE SEE REYNA | 2A

From Staff Reports With a full term under his belt, Deaf Smith County Sheriff J. Dale Butler enjoys his job and wants to keep doing it. Seeking re-election to the seat as the county’s top cop, Butler had no opposition in the March Republican primary, but is facing a challenge from Independent Fidel Reyna Jr. in the upcoming general election. “I am seeking re-election to continue serving the

people of Deaf Smith County as their sheriff,” Butler said. “It has been a great privilege to serve for the past four years. Deaf Smith County is a wonderful place to live, work and raise a family. “The opportunity to have a hand in making this a safe place to raise your family is a job that I look to every day.” Aware that there is always room for improvement, Butler knows every law enforcement agency and jurisdiction has its own

specific set of problems and deficiencies. However, the issues he sees facing Deaf Smith County Sheriff’s Office (DSCSO) are ones indicative of someone who has been part of the inner workings. While none of the issues – personnel, jail space and increasing demands – are crime specific, alleviation of each and all could have a profound effect on county law enforcement. “Hiring enough qualified PLEASE SEE BUTLER | 2A

said. “For the team to be successful, it will take 10 kids playing their absolute best. We have nothing to lose, and I’m sure they are looking ahead to a big semifinal later that day. “We have to work harder than they do and set up opportunities. Then, when we get opportunities, we have to capitalize.” The playoffs were not on the front burner when the season opened in August. With several key holes to fill in both lineups, the Herd opened 0-5 and played an admittedly tough non-district slate. Finding a stride, the Whitefaces were able to beat the teams they were supposed to and clinched a return to the postseason with a fourth-place finish. While the reality of the competition has advancing a long-shot at best, Crouch said little can diminish what Thursday’s match means overall. “We would have to beat the best team we will play this year and then play the winner of AmarilloMonterey, who both beat us 17-2 already,” he said. “I would say the legitimate chances [of advancing] are zero, but I don’t want to get hung up on advancing and the team winning. “I just want each kid to play their best and compete hard. This will be the last team tennis match for six seniors. I came in when these kids were freshmen, and in four years, they have taken us to Area all four years and accumulated 50 team wins. Win or lose, I want them to be proud of what they have done and the way they played.”

Opinion

Death knell could ring for Big 12 Given a chance to take an affirmative step toward securing its future, the Big 12 Conference stayed true to form and did roughly nothing. Two days of meetings near DFW International Airport let conference presidents talk about grabbing up a few more dollars from ESPN and Fox Sports to soften the blow of killing off their conference. The networks actually would save money, compared to expansion forcing bigger payouts, and Big 12 members still could ring the cash register, probably for the last time. Wait, this is how the Big 12 ends? It's hard to see it any other way, despite optimistic words from University of Oklahoma president David Boren and Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby. The flimsiest of the so-called Power Five college sports conferences decided it could do no better than entrenched limbo between the best and everyone else, instead of even trying to move forward. The decision, they said, was unanimous. Boren, a former U.S. senator, once pronounced the Big 12 as "psychologically disadvantaged" with only 10 members and no conference football championship game. Instead, the Big 12 has tried to sell a full roundrobin schedule as producing "one true champion." Circumstances have changed since he said that, Boren said Monday. College football playoff selectors were less impressed. Two years ago, Baylor and TCU were highly ranked and coBig 12 champs – and both left out of football's Final Four. That's when the Big 12 started talking expansion, which led us to this nowhere landing zone. Meanwhile, the rest of the nation enjoys a belly laugh at a supposed bigtime conference that can't get out of its own way. Instead of taking on a Houston, Cincinnati, BYU, Connecticut or even SMU, the Big 12 took a walk. An applicant needed eight votes, almost amusing in retrospect. Thus we end this most ridiculous waste of time. Nearly two-dozen schools chasing a Power Five dream expended time and money to build proposals, and 11 received interviews. In the end, well, never mind. The Big 12's life-sustaining TV deals expire in 2024-25. ESPN and Fox Sports won't be held hostage again, so expect nationally attractive Texas and Oklahoma to find new conference homes before then. Each is familiar with that dance. The problem is for the lesser eight, including Baylor, TCU, Texas Tech and Oklahoma State, to cite a few with strong North Texas followings. Can they catch on somewhere else? If Texas and OU wanted to lead the Big 12 out of this mess, they could have. That they didn't tells us what we need to know, even with Boren's denials. The sun may come out tomorrow, but bet your bottom dollar, there's no guarantee beyond that. Dallas Morning News

AUSTIN – Texas' top three officeholders on Oct. 12 instructed the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services to improve the protection of children at risk of abuse. With recen t data showing the agency is struggling to see children in a timely manner, Gov. Greg Abbott, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and House Speaker Joe Straus sent a letter to Department of Family and Protective Services Commissioner Hank Whitman, calling for immediate action to more quickly help vulnerable children. "Protecting children from abuse is going to be a top priority in next year's legislative session, but there is a need for action right now," Straus said. The letter instructs Whitman to: - Develop a plan to hire and train more special investigators; - Develop a plan to ensure that DFPS has the caseworkers to handle the increase in cases and to prioritize hires in the most critical regions of the state; - Develop a plan to address a shortage of foster homes and residential providers; - Reinforce a culture of accountability within CPS; and - Build upon ongoing efforts to enhance partnerships with faithbased communities. The 85th Regular Session of the Texas Legislature will convene on Jan. 10. Bus safety urged The Texas Department of Public Safety on Oct. 13 urged drivers to comply with laws prohibiting the passing of school buses. During National School Bus Safety Week, Oct. 1721, DPS Highway Patrol troopers will watch for drivers who pass any school bus that is stopped and operating a visual signal, either flashing red lights or a stop sign. Drivers who violate the law could face fines as much as $1,250. Texas law requires a driver traveling in either direction to stop when approaching a school bus that is stopped and operating a visual signal. The driver may not proceed until one of the following occurs: the school bus resumes motion; the operator is signaled by the bus driver to proceed; or the visual signal is no longer activated. A streak ends Friday By John Carson BRAND Managing Editor

Lady Herd's Faith Castaneda (5) knocks down a kill during Saturday's District 3-5A loss to Randall.

Lady Whitefaces swept by Randall From Staff Reports

A silver lining was quickly overshadowed by the storm Saturday as the Hereford Lady Whitefaces were swept by Randall in District 3-5A volleyball play. The loss ended a week for the Lady Herd (23-15, 7-4) that saw them swept by the top two teams in the district, but still hold on to third place in the playoff race. “This was just like Tuesday’s loss at Amarillo,” Hereford coach Catherine Foerster said. “I don’t know what it is. We can’t seem to do our best against good teams.” The Lady Raiders wasted little time getting the upper hand with a 25-14 win in the first set. Rebounding to open the second set, the Lady Whitefaces showed life in taking a 14-13 lead. From there, the Lady Raiders showed why they are ranked among the state’s best. Embarking on a 22-2 run, the Lady Raiders put the second set away, 2515, and ran out to a 10-1 lead in the third before

the smoke cleared. Randall eventually won the third set, 25-12, to clinch the match. “We’re still making too many mistakes,” Foerster said. “We have to work harder at practice to get better as individuals and as a team. “We have to put this week behind us and get to work on a big week ahead. We can’t dwell on this. Our last three matches are too important. We must work hard and be focused.” At 7-4 in district play, the Lady Whitefaces are in third with their only league losses coming to district leader and runner-up Amarillo and Randall. Wins in the final three matches over teams they have already beaten this year, will clinch the No. 3 spot. The Lady Herd began their final push to the playoffs after press time Tuesday with a visit to Palo Duro. They return home to face Dumas for a 1 p.m., Saturday match before ending the regular season Oct. 25 at Caprock.

One certainty for Friday’s football game between Hereford and Palo Duro is that a losing streak of some kind will come to an end. The Whitefaces welcome the Dons into Whiteface Stadium on Friday for a District 3-5A tilt that sees both teams mired in four-game losing streaks. As a result, both are 0-4 in district play with the Dons not having won a league game since they beat the Herd to end last season. Meanwhile, the Whitefaces have not won a district game since 2014. For the 1-6 Dons, the lone win was a 38-8 romp past Bushland that followed 44-14 and 4128 losses to Tascosa and Rider to open the season. In district play, they have lost to Plainview (31-14), Dumas (39-21), Caprock (27-14) and Canyon (36-23). “I can’t figure out how they’re 1-6,” Hereford coach Don DeLozier said. “They are extremely athletic and have big linemen. “They like the power and zone running game, and they will throw it. They have a very dangerous receiver.” Held to just 14 points in three games and 23 or less in all but two, the Photo by Bryan Hedrick/HISD Dons are averaging 21.7 Leading rusher Seth Dixon (21) and the Whiteface rushing attack look to get on track after four points per game this sub-par outings. season. Unlike a previous week or two this season, the Hereford Whitefaces found no moral victory in Friday’s 3721 loss to Randall. In fact, from the lead bull down, Friday’s outcome is not sitting well with the Herd. “As a whole – from players to coaches – we are disappointed in Friday,” Hereford coach Don DeLozier said. “We felt we were ready to play a good game, and it just didn’t happen. I don’t know exactly what it was. “We keep coming up empty when we try to take the next step.” After stopping the Raiders on fourth-and-goal to open the game and then forcing a three-and-out, the Whitefaces were standing tough when they ended a scoreless first quarter by turning it over on downs at the Randall 30. One play later, a 75-yard touchdown pass put the winds in the Raider

offensive sails as they exploded to a 17-0 halftime lead and pushed it to 24-0 on the first possession of the second half. Making the most of a Marty Carnahan fumble recovery, the Herd showed life when Dodge DeLozier connected with Caleb Martinez for a 31-yard score on the ensuing play. DeLozier would add a 1-yard touchdown run and 23-yard TD pass to Carlos Gallegos in the fourth quarter, but the Raiders were able to keep the Whitefaces at arm’s length. “Our defense hung tough in the first half,” DeLozier said. “It was good to come back offensively after an empty first half.” Despite a career night by DeLozier, the Herd managed just 224 total yards, including only 58 on the ground. DeLozier connected on 9-of-20 passes for 166 yards with 2 TDs and no interceptions. He also gained a team-high 38 yards rushing on 10

The Raiders, who gained 430 yards (249 rushing, 181 passing), scored on six consecutive possessions between the early second and fourth quarters. “This goes back to working so hard and not having it pay off,” DeLozier said. “We’re at a point where we have to come together and keep moving forward. “We always talk about the football family. This is the epitome of that. Do you bond or do you fragment? I believe this group will bond.”

problems over the past four games – scoring just 13.5 points per outing in district play. “We are struggling to run the ball, and that hinders our offense,” DeLozier said. “We have been playing better defenses since we got into district, but most of the problems are on us. “The guys are not making excuses. Everyone’s working to get better.” Kickoff for Friday’s game is set for 7:30 p.m.

Netters close strong, move above .500 From Staff Reports Replacements made the most of their opportunities Saturday as the Hereford Whiteface tennis team stampeded Borger, 15-3, and Class 4A No. 14 Pampa, 16-3, to close the regular season. The Herd won their fourth straight match to finish 15-13 overall after clinching a District 3-5A playoff berth last week. “Saturday was a great day,” Hereford coach Cody Crouch said. “There were a lot of kids who normally don’t get the varsity experience that moved up, filled in on varsity and won matches. “It is exciting to see those kids move into the lineup and pick up wins.”

Crouch specifically cited Brynna Rudd, who teamed up with regular Ally Hubbard to win 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 girls doubles against Borger before capturing the No. 6 singles match, 6-1, 6-0 against Pampa. Against Borger, the boys swept singles in straight sets, while the girls only saw Kara Esquivel lose at No. 1. Despite falling at No. 1 girls doubles, Addi Ferris and Erin Jesko rebounded to win respective single matches at Nos. 2 and 3. Only one match went to a third set with the Bulldogs emerging on top at No. 3 boys doubles. The girls did the singles sweeping against Pampa – all in straight sets – with Esquivel, Ferris, Jesko, Priscilla

Castillo, Kamille Hicks and Rudd winning. The boys went 4-2 in singles as No. 2 Tommy Villalovos (6-4, 4-6, 12-10), No. 3 Brenden James (6-4, 0-6, 10-6) and No. 6 Austin Hougland (6-4, 5-7, 10-5) took thirdset tiebreakers. “I really expected the Pampa match to be a lot closer than it was,” Crouch said. “I thought we played great in that match. They have a very talented boys team, and we were just a little better. “I thought it was a great win and a great way to finish the regular season.” Crouch added the victories were also the 49th and 50th career wins for Herd seniors.

TV LISTINGS cover story

Matt LeBlanc stars in “Man With a Plan,” premiering Monday on CBS.

Matt LeBlanc is a ‘Man With a Plan’ in his latest sitcom By Jay Bobbin © Zap2it

If one were to pose Joey Tribbiani’s trademark question — “How you doin’?” — to Matt LeBlanc these days, the response would have to be, “Pretty good.” Not long after finishing work his Showtime series “Episodes” (with the fifth and final season being shown next year), the “Friends” alum not only has re-upped to host the next two seasons of the BBC

ness partner (“Saturday Night Live” and “Weeds” veteran Kevin Nealon). LeBlanc is in familiar hands as “Man With a Plan” starts, since he’s directed by television-comedy legend James Burrows, who also guided “Friends” episodes including the very first one. The actor says he wanted to return to that format “because I have a family, and the hours are shorter. I like the sort of work week on a multicam (multi-camera comedy). You

and BBC America car show “Top Gear,” he’s returning to primetime sitcom work. Premiering Monday, Oct. 24, CBS’ “Man With a Plan” casts him as a contractor who becomes a Mr. Mom when his wife (former “Yes, Dear” costar Liza Snyder) goes back to work. Overwhelmed at first, he eventually comes up with a plan to handle their three children (Grace Kaufman, Matthew McCann, Hala Finley), sometimes with the attempted help of his brother and busi-

rehearse all week, then you shoot in front of an audience, like a play. It’s like being part of an ensemble theater company.” The concept by married series creators and executive producers Jackie and Jeff Filgo (“That ‘70s Show”) appealed to LeBlanc from the start. “We had in common that we wanted to do something in the same sort of arena,” he says, “a family show. I felt like I’m not getting any younger, and I am a parent, so I wanted

to explore what that would be like as a character. And they wrote a great script, and I responded to it. And then we started talking more, and here we are.” Jackie Filgo explains the show is based on her and her husband’s “personal experience from last year. We have always worked together, and we took the year off and were with our kids 24/7 for the first time ever ... and got to see sort of the real ins and outs of parenting. And we were at din-

ner one night, and our daughter just picked up a handful of mashed potatoes and started eating it like an ice-cream cone, and we realized perhaps some things had fallen through the cracks. And we might have some work to do.” “It became really clear,” adds Jeff Filgo, “when you’re only seeing your kids at the edges of the day, you’re just getting the greatest hits. And when you’re with them all the time, you’re getting the deep album cuts. With a drum solo.”

“When someone you love becomes a memory, that memory becomes a treasure.”

TV LISTINGS tonight’s picks

Project Runway: Fashion Startup THURSDAY

Sutton Foster WEDNESDAY 7 p.m. on 7 KVII It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown It simply wouldn’t be the Halloween season without this animated “Peanuts” classic, marking its 50th anniversary. Linus stakes out a spot in the pumpkin patch, hoping to catch a glimpse of the Great Pumpkin. While he continues his annual vigil, Charlie Brown discovers stones in his trick-or-treat bag, Lucy becomes maternal and Snoopy gets moonstruck. Written by Charles M. Schulz, the special features the franchise’s familiar music by Vince Guaraldi. 9 p.m. on TV LND Younger Empirical’s new investor may have brought a welcome infusion of cash into the publishing imprint, but with it comes a new task for Liza (Sutton Foster): signing YouTube “celebrities.” The assignment forces her to bridge millennial divides both in the workplace and in her personal life. Hilary Duff, Miriam Shor, Debi Mazar, Nico Tortorella and Peter Hermann also star in the new episode “A Night at the Opera.”

8 p.m. on COMEDY Key & Peele Sportsball Spectacular Emmy-winning comics Keegan Michael-Key and Jordan Peele take on America’s most revered athletic activities in this new two-hour special that, with any luck, will manage to be as mercilessly pointed as the many sports-themed sketches they delivered on their long-running comedy series. 9:32 p.m. on LIFE Project Runway: Fashion Startup Aspiring fashion and beauty entrepreneurs pitch their concepts to a panel of expert investors in this new series, which expands the “Project Runway” franchise by exploring a new facet of the style and fashion world. On the panel are Katia Beauchamp, co-founder of the retailer Birchbox; tech marketplace maven Christine Hunsicker; fashion designer Rebecca Minkoff; and business mentor Gary Wassner. Designer Tommy Hilfiger is among the special guests scheduled to appear during the season.

Ian Somerhalder FRIDAY 7 p.m. on 3 KVII-2 The Vampire Diaries The eighth — and final — season of the series opens with “Hello, Brother,” resuming the saga months from where it left off, as Stefan (Paul Wesley) continues to seek Damon and Enzo (Ian Somerhalder, Michael Malarkey). Bonnie (Kat Graham) tries to maintain hope that the search will be successful. Caroline and Alaric (Candice King, Matt Davis) fear they and their family are in danger. Executive producers Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson wrote the script.

SATURDAY

7 p.m. on 10 KFDA MacGyver Jack’s (George Eads) ex-girlfriend (guest star Amy Acker, “Person of Interest”), who worked with him while he was in the CIA, is the object of the mission in “Metal Saw.” Still with that agency, she vanished in Venezuela while trying to end an arms dealer’s activities — so Jack, MacGyver (Lucas Till) and their comrades go there to find her. Sandine Holt, Justin Hires and Tristin Mays also star.

Jason Bateman

Matt LeBlanc

7:30 p.m. on 4 KAMR Movie: Identity Thief Their styles differ, but Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy make for a reasonably amusing pairing in this 2013 comedy, containing a sufficient amount of the raunchy humor both have become associated with. McCarthy plays the title thief, whose lifting of a Denver businessman’s (Bateman) identity prompts him to travel to Florida to find her, bring her back and get his situation corrected. Others are on their trail, though. Amanda Peet and Robert Patrick are among co-stars.

though neither knows where it will happen.

SUNDAY

9 p.m. on 2 KACV Indian Summers on Masterpiece In the new episode “A Gift for the King,” the British prepare for their carefree picnic to mark the king’s silver jubilee, unaware that Naresh is putting into action his heinous plan: to dispatch innocent orphan Chota Matthew (Kabir Raj Singh Singh Randhawa) to the event bearing a bomb disguise to look like a royal present. When Aafrin (Nikesh Patel) learns a bombing will occur somewhere, he alerts Ralph (Henry Lloyd-Hughes),

MONDAY

7 p.m. on 4 KAMR The Voice Singers Tim McGraw and Faith Hill assist the coaches as key advisers as the artist hopefuls prepare for “The Knockouts, Premiere” in this new episode. Leading with their strongest contenders remaining from the battle rounds, coaches Adam Levine, Miley Cyrus, Alicia Keys and Blake Shelton pair those vocalists against a teammate, but in this new phase of competition, each singer picks his or her own song to perform. 7:30 p.m. on 10 KFDA Man With a Plan Following the end of “Episodes,” Matt LeBlanc gets back to a more traditional form of television comedy with this saga of a contractor whose wife (“Yes, Dear” alum Liza Snyder) rejoins the work force, making him a “Mr. Mom.” Initially, he’s overwhelmed in trying to tend to their three kids — but he eventually gets a grip on the situation and makes it clear who’s the boss, even if it takes frequent reminders. Kevin Nealon also stars as LeBlanc’s older brother.

TUESDAY 7 p.m. on 3 KVII-2 The Flash Barry (Grant Gustin) lets his new trainee, Jesse (guest star Violett Beane) tag along when a new meta-human who calls himself Mirror Master (guest star Grey Damon) appears on the scene, in league with his old partner, Top (guest star Ashley Rickards), and looking to settle an old score with Snart (recurring guest star Wentworth Miller). All goes well until Jesse defies one of Barry’s stern orders, leading to catastrophe in the new episode “The New Rogues.” 8 p.m. on 4 KAMR This Is Us Moving back in time, the new episode “The Game Plan” — which reveals the history behind the family’s passionate support of the Pittsburgh Steelers — finds the childless Jack and Rebecca (Milo Ventimiglia, Mandy Moore) debating the prospect of starting a family. Kevin (Justin Hartley), meanwhile, discovers that the script for his part in the play is relevant to his own life, and Beth and Randall (Susan Kelechi Watkins, Sterling K. Brown) confront an unexpected turn of events.

“The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou”

Best Bill Murray movies By Jay Bobbin “Ghostbusters” (1984) Murray and Ramis reunited with “Stripes” director Ivan Reitman – and had a colossal hit – as two of the parapsychologists “ya gonna call” if you have problems with spectres. “Scrooged” (1988) In an amusingly subversive take on “A Christmas Carol,” Murray played a jaded television executive visited on the eve of the yuletide by – all together, now – ghosts of the past, present and future. “Quick Change” (1990) Murray co-directed as well as starred in this underrated comedy about bank robbers whose getaway proves quite complicated. “What About Bob?” (1991) Hilarious as a therapist’s nightmare, Murray played a patient who couldn’t stand for his counselor (Richard Dreyfuss) to go on vacation ... and tracked him down. “Groundhog Day” (1993) A movie that’s taken on a life of its own, this comedy cast Murray as a forecaster caught in the title phenom-

enon of the same day (and events) repeating over and over. “Lost in Translation” (2003) Arguably the best movie Murray has made, writer-director Sofia Coppola’s somewhat hypnotic comedy-drama features great work by him as a film star who makes a soulful connection with another American (Scarlett Johansson) while working in Tokyo. “The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou” (2004) In one of his collaborations with proudly offbeat filmmaker Wes Anderson, Murray played the title undersea explorer, determined to seek revenge on a certain shark. “Hyde Park on Hudson” (2012) In a performance that demanded he shed his usual “tricks,” Murray did a fine job as Franklin D. Roosevelt, at a time when he was more than family-friendly to one cousin (Laura Linney). “St. Vincent” (2014) Murray showed he’s still capable of greatness as a war veteran who becomes a young neighbor’s (Jaeden Lieberher) unlikely inspiration.
