year as lead bull, the Herd returns five starters on offense and four on defense. Improvement is needed “everywhere,” Delozier said, as a number of new players are worked into the starting lineup and playing rotation. An area on every team’s annual list for improvement happens to be an asset for the Herd this season. “Every year, you want to get the offensive line to gel as soon as you can,” Delozier said. “We have the most returning experience on the offensive line. “A lot of the guys who will be in the rotation may not have technical starting experience, but they have a lot of playing experience.” Anchored by seniors Isaiah Valdez (6-2, 285) and Truston Gudgell (6-4, 240), the remainder of the Herd offensive line has bulk with Johnny Garza (jr., 5-11, 245), Brian Villalobos (sr., 5-10, 240), Luis Morantes (jr., 5-11, 180), Andre Gomez (sr., 5-10, 225) and Trey Ledezma (st., 5-10, 210) rounding out the guards and tackles in the eight-man offensive line rotation. Juniors Noah Nikkel (511, 175) and Mark Guillen (5-10, 185) will split time at center. The offensive line’s experience will be needed as a new backfield is broken in. Taking the reins of the offense is senior Bailey McMillan (6-0, 190). A back-up last season, McMillan started the playoff game and quickly took control of a three-man, spring-practice battle for the position. Among his physical attributes – including a strong arm – McMillan displays intangibles that can lead to success. “He brings a lot of poise to the position for us,”

Mind-set key to success for experienced, deep tennis team lie for Hereford High tennis teams. After making the playoffs in 2014, Herd boys and girls squads are looking for a repeat performance and beyond this year. “Our district results last year were Randall, Canyon, Hereford, Caprock, Dumas, Palo Duro,” Herd coach Cody Crouch said. “We were eliminated in the first round of area by No. 10 Abilene Cooper. “My goal this year is to improve those results.” The prospect of reaching that goal is legitimate thanks in large part to a roster that features probably the three most important things any coach wants to see on a roster – talent, experience and depth. Anchored by the return of multi-year No. 1 singles players, more than half of the squad’s top 16 players – eight boys, eight girls – are upperclassmen. Nine seniors dominate the top 16 with two ju-

have to remember where we have come from, but also remember we aren’t at the bottom of the totem pole anymore.” While the Herd has a lot going for it this season, reality is that improvement can take place without it showing in terms of record and postseason showing. The reason? District 3-5A is no cakewalk. “We are in a tough district where there are two teams that are always in the top 10-20 in the state,” Crouch said. “Then, there are two more teams in the area that are top 20 teams. We are in a tough spot, and I want to give us every opportunity to improve every day on the court.” To prepare for the rigors of district play, Crouch put together a hectic early-season schedule that began Aug. 8 and featured no fewer than 12 matches before the Sept. 10 district opener at Randall. Crouch readily admitted he circled the Sept. 12 match at Canyon as soon as the schedule was released. “A huge goal for the fall is finding a way to get past Canyon,” he said. Biggest hurdles for the season are just like the team’s weaknesses – an attainable tangible on the court and an elusive intangible off the court. Again, between the lines, the departure of Alina Villalovos has left a leadership void that must – and will – be filled. However, between the ears, focus must be maintained on the task at hand and goals set. “We have already start-

Young harriers lead Herd cross country By John Carson BRAND Managing Editor Youth is the watchword for Hereford High cross country this season as a bevy of young talent is poised to burst onto the scene. However, with that youth comes a large dose of the unknown as to how each runner will perform under the varsity spotlight. Along those lines, Hereford coach Jose Huerta is taking a guardedly optimistic approach to the upcoming season. “We look forward to having the opportunity to compete at the Clovis meet on Friday,” Huerta said. “I hope we can go out and represent Hereford well. “We can only take one meet at a time.”
In talking specifics about the 2015 squad, Huerta may sound as if he is caught in a coachspeak loop or is trying to be evasive. However, neither is the case. This year’s team brings an overall set of dynamics that essentially interweave team weaknesses and strengths into a unique tapestry. Huerta readily admits his team’s major weakness this season is its youth and inexperience. However, were it not for that weakness, the team’s strength would not be what it is. Interestingly, that strength is probably the main thing needed to combat the team’s weakness. “We have a very young team with good leaders,”

Huerta said. “Although they are very young, they are being led in the right direction. “That brings a team together.” Huerta was quick to add that strong leadership can

smooth many of the pitfalls of an inexperienced roster. The most important aspect of that, he pointed out, is leadership can provide the direction and example to offset potential disadvantages of inexperience and youth. “We can overcome our weakness (youth) if we work together to get the experience we lack,” Huer-
ta said. “Working together with hard work and dedication will be the key to success.” However, to pull that off, Huerta knows he has to have the right people in leadership roles for the team. In that respect, the Herd appears to have the right people for the job. Seniors Melissa Henson and Noe Cervantes will serve as 2015 girls and boys team captains, respectively. “We are blessed to have them as our team captains,” Huerta said. “They are both key athletes to our program.” While the coach will spend this season in the dual role of reveling in his senior stars’ final season and lamenting their pending departure, the cupboard is not bare for Herd harriers. Huerta specifically noted freshmen Sabbatha Taylor and Jaydon Garcia as “showing signs of being successful” distance
runners. While youth and inexperience are the admitted major weaknesses of this year’s team, that is not the biggest hurdle looming for the season. In fact, that hurdle is pretty much one all coaches hope to avoid. “We have to be able to stay healthy throughout the season,” Huerta said. “We will need to stay healthy in order to get some good performances in practice so we can perform to the best of our ability at the meets.” The Herd opens the 2015 season Friday at Clovis. Meets at Burkburnett (Sept. 3), Plainview (Sept. 12), Lubbock (Sept. 19), Amarillo (Sept. 26), Canyon (Oct. 3) and West Texas A&M (Oct. 10) precede the Oct. 16 District 3-5A meet in Amarillo. Regionals are set for Oct. 26 in Lubbock with the state championships on Nov. 7 in Round Rock.
