With the three outgoing members noticeably absent, the Hereford Independent School District (HISD) Board of Trustees verified results from its May 5 election during a called meeting Friday. With board vice president and District VII Trustee Clay McNeely presiding over the meeting in the absence of president Kevin Knight, a trio of other trustees – that included District II’s Bobby Rodriguez, District IV’s Carolyn Waters and District VII’s Robert De La Cruz – joined

Numbers for early voting, provisional ballots and election day voting were perused, tallied and certified as results from the district’s contested races in Districts I and VI became official. With three of the board’s seven seats changing hands as a result of the election, none of the three outgoing board members – Knight of District I, former board president Angel Barela of District VI and District III’s Emily Wade – were not in attendance to PLEASE SEE HISD | 5

Forewarned not to expect the expediency of the previous meeting before things even started, the warning proved prophetic during Tuesday’s regular meeting of the Deaf Smith County Commissioners Court. There was a nearly 100 percent increase in the time of Tuesday’s meeting compared to the final meeting in April. Comment was made to expect the time increase with County Judge D.J. Wagner back presiding over the meeting after he missed April 24’s gathering. That meeting was presided over by Precinct WAGNER 2 Commissioner Jerry O’Connor. While the most-recent meeting was nearly twice as long as its predecessor, the court was still adjourned in less than 15 minutes after whizzing through a three-item agenda and discussing a couple of issues. The lone order of business – aside from the routine approval of previous minutes, reports and paying bills – was an item concerning the placement of a gas line across County Road BB in Precinct 4. With Precinct 4 Commissioner Dale Artho absent, Wagner informed the board all “proper” paperwork “was in order” and the pipe would be buried to PLEASE SEE COUNTY | 3

Expansion officially open Nothing like making a big do over a bog do, and that is exactly what Merrick Pet Care did Tuesday when it officially cut the ribbon for the grand opening of an $80 million expansion of its dry pet operations. With company CEO Greg Shearson on hand, the expansion was added to the rolls of the Deaf Smith County Chamber of Commerce during ceremonies Tuesday. BRAND/April Blacksher
