Where do we go from here? That is the question the Hereford Independent School District (HISD)
Board of Trustees will meet head on in a called meeting next month. Trustees decided during Monday’s regular meeting to call a meeting for June 19 or 20 to delve deeper into the failure of a $45
bond issue on May 6. Voters nixed a HISD bond issue for the second time since 2015 by a 795-557 vote earlier this month. “We have to start to reassess things and formulate a plan,” outgoing board pres-
ident Angel Barela said. “We need to discuss this. The board doesn’t have the luxury of much choice. “The needs didn’t go away. They must be addressed.” The bond vote – which
drew only 16.7 percent of the county’s eligible 8,118 registered voters – shot down a $45 million measure that would have addressed a number of PLEASE SEE TRUSTEES | 5

When Deaf Smith County Precinct 3 Commissioner Mike Brumley initiated discussion at the May 8 commissioners court meeting over the outright purchase or leasing of county motor graders, he had a specific reason in mind. At Monday’s regular meeting of the Deaf Smith County Commissioners Court, separate agenda items to advertise for bids to purchase and lease motor graders were both tabled as discussion continued. The discussion took up a portion of the agenda-ed meeting and continued for at least 30 minutes after the official business of the meeting was completed. What has become apparent is the issue is rife with questions – and many of those questions begat other questions – on what is the best course for the county take. “This is why I wanted BRUMLEY to do this,” Brumley said. “There are lots of questions. This way we are not under any deadlines and can get all the answers we need before having to make decisions.” Although commissioners have already agreed to go through state Buy Board channels to replace current motor graders – thus eliminating the need for a bidding process – they are also looking at not having to do that until later in the year. With representatives from John Deere and Cat in attendance Monday, commissioners also received a comparison of lease plans from Mike Cuba of American National Leasing Company. By Jim Steiert Contributing Writer
A United Methodist Action Reach-Out Mission by Youth (UM ARMY) team from the Northwest Texas and North Texas Annual Conferences, including the Dallas area, will be in Hereford June 25-June 30 to perform mission work in Herford. The target group for the UM ARMY’s efforts includes elderly, handicapped, and low income individuals within Hereford who may need repair work around their home. Individuals applying for help must own the home, unless they are requesting help with a handicap access ramp. Rev. Kevin Bushart, pastor of First United Methodist Church of Hereford, says the UM Army mission team
will be staying in the local church’s facilities during their efforts in Hereford. Applications for assistance will need to be filled out at the offices of FUMC Hereford at 5th and Main. The mission team will tackle projects including new construction, home repairs and maintenance. Projects included in new construction are handicapped assistance and wheelchair ramps, wooden porches, enclosed porches, and small sheds. Home repairs that can be performed by the team include steps, handrails, hanging doors, patching leaky roofs, porches, floorboards, saggy windows, replacing window glass, freeing stuck PLEASE SEE ARMY | 5
