They had so much fun last year, they decided to do it again. That was essentially the line of thinking when officials at Nazarene Family Church in Hereford made the no-brainer decision to continue the Father’s Day celebration another year. With hopes of becom-
ing an annual event in its debut last year, Dad-Fest is well on the way of becoming a fixture on the Hereford calendar for the third weekend in June. “Everyone last year loved it,” Nazarene Family Church pastor Ted Taylor said. “We had about 700 who registered and a lot more came. It was a great event. “The weather didn’t
help us out, but it was a real success. It was very well attended.” Like last year, this year’s event will take place at Dameron Park on Saturday, June 16. Games, concessions and music will keep the crowd going as they peruse a variety of classic cars, trucks and motorcycles. With car shows a popu-
lar attraction, Dad-Fest 2017’s proved that in spades as it drew nearly 90 vehicles for display. “People really loved the car show,” Taylor said. To complete the feel with vintage vehicles around, this year’s event has an added event with the classic vehicles cruising the streets of Hereford during the evening. The purpose of the
event is to help shine the spotlight on dads, who are often somewhat overlooked in terms of appreciation. “We want this to be a positive, family-friendly event to celebrate dad and his family,” Taylor said. “This gives dads something special to do with the kids. PLEASE SEE DAD-FEST | 5

A come and go reception honoring Shelly Moss, long-time executive director of King’s Manor Methodist Retirement System, will be held Friday, June 8, from 2-4 p.m. in the Lamar Room at the manor. It will be a time for laughter, fellowship, and recollection—and more than likely, the shedding of a few tears. Mrs. Moss is stepping down after 24 years of work at the Manor to pursue clinical social work. Her departure from King’s Manor marks the turning of the page on a significant chapter in the history of senior care within the community that she had a major hand in writing. As one friend observed, “Shelly Moss may be succeeded, but she will never be replaced at King’s Manor.” Mrs. Moss says she won’t leave her post until a suitable individual has been hired and trained for the position. “I will continue working with the Founders Board on this year’s major fundraiser, the Founders Day barbecue and auction. I came to King’s Manor 24 years ago as the Social Services director, and fell in love with social work and with this place and its people. I have found that I miss social work. In order to follow an original dream of pursuing clinical social work I have to leave my long-time home of King’s Manor, but I’m not leaving Hereford. “It has been an honor and privilege to know and work with my fellow employees, family members and residents. So many faces and personalities have left imprints on my soul that I am forever changed,” said Mrs. Moss. After graduating from Amarillo High

Funeral services for Alfred W. Shoffit, 93, a Hereford resident, were held Friday, June 1 in The Lamar Room at King’s Manor Methodist Retirement System with Dennis Latham, the Rev. Jim Watkins and the Rev. Don McDonald officiating. Graveside services were held Tuesday, May 29 at Dallas-Fort Worth Nation-
al Cemetery. Arrangements were entrusted to Parkside Chapel Funeral Home in Hereford. Mr. Shoffit passed away on Wednesday, May 23, 2018 in Amarillo. Alfred Walter Shoffit was born March 28, 1925 to Henry Johnson and Edna Irene (Russell) Shoffit on the Four 6’s Ranch near Guthrie and grew up in Lefors. A World War II veteran, he served in the U.S. Army from 1943-46. Originally assigned to an accelerated training program for civil engineers, he was transferred to the I&R Platoon, 423rd Infantry Regiment, 106th Infantry Division, and sent to Europe shortly before the Battle of the Bulge. He was taken prisoner during the battle and spent six months as a POW, mostly at Zittau on the German/Polish border. After discharge from the Army, he returned to his hometown of Lefors, where he met and married Syrena (Jackie)
Patterson. A.W. finished college on the G.I. Bill and became a math and science teacher. He began his teaching career with three years in Cuero, He spent six years teaching at Lefors High School and then served 21 years as a chemistry and physics teacher at the high school in Andrews. After retirement, A.W. and Jackie moved to a small farm in Bowlegs, Okla., later relocating to Cedar Creek Lake south of Dallas. In 2009, they moved to Hereford and resided at King’s Manor until his passing. A.W. had a lifelong love of woodworking and building. He built two houses “from the ground up” and substantially remodeled many others during his lifetime. He served God faithfully through local church
membership in every community he lived in. He was a man of outstanding intellect, humor and integrity. He will be greatly missed. Surviving are his wife of the home; daughters Patricia DeCastro of Guadalupita, N.M., and Leona Shoffit of Hereford; brother Delmer Lee Shoffit of Tanneyville, Mo.; grandson, Zac Dortch of Lubbock; granddaughters Marie Forst of Glenshaw,
Pa., Monisha O’Connor of Eagle, Id., Renee Ruch of Pittsburg, Pa., and Farah Summers of Edmond, Okla.; and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother; and daughter Sheila Marie Shoffit Brown. The family suggests memorials in Mr. Shoffit’s name be made to King’s Manor 400 Ranger, Hereford, Texas.

School, Mrs. Moss attended Baylor University, earning a degree in Psychology. Upon coming to Hereford she became coordinator with the Rape Crisis/Domestic Violence Center, located in the Deaf Smith County Courthouse. After she and husband Max had their family, a social worker position opened at King’s Manor and she got the job, holding that post for 14 years. “I loved social work so much that I graduated with my Masters in Social Work from UTA/WTAMU in December of 2003 – soon after I was put in the program development post at King’s Manor, and began working with the Founders Board on fund raising for benevolent care,” she said. Later, she became assistant administrator, then was named executive director in 2007. Child care, hospice and long term care were added to the services provided by King’s Manor on her watch. “This community supports King’s Manor in so many ways, and people who are physically separated from us by many miles

do too. We receive incredible support financially, through volunteerism, music, and through prayers and presence, as well as patronage. The goal of King’s Manor to serve this community by providing quality care have not and will not change. Strong leadership permeates our walls. There are dedicated, long-serving employees in every department who know their jobs,” she stressed. “Sometimes nursing home work can be overwhelming. You can’t change people’s circumstances. But, you can grow where you are planted. I have always tried to advocate for residents and develop relationships with them. The relationships with residents, their families, and our employees have always been the rewarding part of this job,” said Mrs. Moss. “I am amazed at how family members volunteer to do so much beyond the care of their loved ones. Folks believe in the mission of King’s Manor and they give to it. Members of our board of directors and the Founders Board give of themselves to make this a better place.” One notable trial during
Mrs. Moss’s tenure was the 2014 fire, and flooding that followed repairs. “In the fire aftermath our assisted living residents were without a home all of that year and coping was stressful and worrisome. We dealt with repairs and rebuilding, being without a kitchen, and then when things were getting back in shape there were frozen pipes and flooding. You had to just laugh about some of it. The community wrapped its arms around us from the moment the fire call went in. The community response on the night of the fire was a real shining moment for Hereford,” she opined. Where to from here? Mrs. Moss says she’ll take a sabbatical to reconnect with family and friends, and likely will wield a paint roller helping her son, Morgan, flip homes. She definitely plans to get back into social work. “King’s Manor has been my home for a quarter of a century, and the people here are family. They are who I came to work for. I have been in and out of the lives of a lot of families. I am awed by God’s hand on King’s Manor. Things happen here because God puts His finger on it.”

WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS Numbers 21:4-9
SALVATION ON A POLE
Vs 4 The children of Israel wondered in the wilderness for 40 years. This incident took place toward the end of this wondering. God had led them around the land of Edom, and this caused the people to become discouraged. Vs 5 They wanted to go back to “the good old days” in Egypt. They had forgotten the pain, suffering and death in which they had lived. They had become ungrateful and rebellious, and God finally ran out of patience with them. Vs 6 God sent snakes into their midst and “many of the people of Israel died”. Vs 7 The people confessed to Moses that they had sinned against God, and asked that Moses intercede to God on their behalf. Vs8 God told Moses to make a fiery serpent of brass and set it on a staff (or Flag Pole) so that everyone could see it. When the people were bitten, all they had to do was look upon the brass serpent and they would live. Vs 9 Moses did as God had commanded and so it was that when anyone was bitten, IF they looked upon the brass serpent, they lived. Jesus referred to this incident in John 3:1415. “And as Moses lifted up the serpent In the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up: that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life”. This reminds us of the redemptive work of our Savior on the cross. POINTS TO CONSIDER: 1. The bite of sin: Just as those serpents injected the deadly venom into their victims, we today need deliverance from the poisonous venom of sin. _Sin is the fiery serpent in that it poisons our soul and brings with it death. Romans 3:23 says that “all have sinned and come short of the Glory of God”. And Romans 6:23 says “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord”. Notice that God did not remove the snakes, but he gave them the way to life. This leads to the next point. 2. Look and live: we understand that it was not the brass serpent that saved the people who had been bitten by snakes, but it was the power of God that gave them life. But, they were not saved by just believing (faith) that they could be saved if they looked ..... but they were saved if they actually looked (obedience). This principle is also stated in James 2:24 “you see that a man is justified by works, and not by faith alone”. 3. Individual responsibility: each person that was bitten had to look at the brass serpent for himself. This was not something that someone else could do for them, not a friend, spouse, brother, sister, mother or father. It is the same for each of us today; no one else can believe in Christ for us, no one else can confess Christ before men for us, no one else can repent of our sins for us, no one else can be buried with Christ in baptism for us. No, folks, these verses from Numbers 21:4-9 illustrate what God expects from people who would be his people -obedience. He seeks people who will throw away their own ideas and be obedient to his commandments. And, the fate of those who do not obey him is death -this is spiritual death, the separation from God in eternity. God’s plan is simple -it is mankind that makes it complicated. Tip of the Day How to travel on a budget and still have fun
Many people are passionate about traveling. Travel, whether it’s domestic or international, can be an invaluable way to experience other cultures, meet new people and get a sense of history. As valuable as travel can be, many people feel they cannot afford to travel. However, there are ways to travel on a budget and still have fun.

· Stay close to home. Men and women traveling on limited budgets can save money and still have fun by staying close to home. The closer your destination to your home, the less costly your trip figures to be. By visiting destinations that are within driving distances, travelers can save money on the cost of airfare, which is typically among the most expensive components of traveling. Road trips also afford travelers ample flexibility that might not be available to travelers who are traveling abroad. That flexibility can make road trips more fun than more structured vacations. · Choose affordable destinations. Overseas travel is not necessarily more expensive than domestic travel. Certain destinations are ideal for bargain hunters year-round. Research affordable destinations via a Google search or utilize the “deals” sections on travel websites such as Orbitz®.
· Cook some of your meals. Food is among the most costly expenses for travelers. Men and women can save some money by cooking some of their meals during their vacations. Doing so saves money on dining out, and travelers willing to experiment by cooking dishes native to the places they’re visiting can have some fun in the kitchen. · Travel during the offseason. Avoiding certain destinations during the height of their tourism seasons is another great way to save. The cost of lodging and airfare peaks during tourist season, but travelers willing to travel during the offseason can save substantial amounts of money. In addition to saving money on lodging and airfare, travelers who plan their vacations during the offseason may also save money on local attractions. · Do your homework regarding your destination. Thanks to websites such as TripAdvisor®, travelers can now learn as much as they want to learn about a given destination before they ever visit it. Such websites can be invaluable resources to travelers who want to enjoy their vacations but must do so on a budget. Research affordable tourist attractions and restaurants, even looking for free activities. Such research can be fun and make for more enjoyable trips.

Sack lunch for Stanton The May 17 meeting of the Hereford Kiwanis Club was not the usual gathering of members chatting over lunch before a program, short business meeting and back to work. “Cars are always in dad’s world. So we felt this was a way to bring dads and their families together. It is a fun deal for everyone.” Dad-Fest at Dameron Park runs from 11 a.m.-3 p.m., with the car show, games and concessions. From 6-9 p.m., the classic vehicles leave the park and take to the streets of Hereford in hopes of making it look like a scene out of “American Graffiti.” Registration for the car show is set for Friday, June 15 from 7-9 p.m., and Saturday, June 16 from 8-10 a.m., at Hereford Community Center. Fee to enter the show and take part in the cruise is $20. For those just wishing to cruise, the fee is $15. Mesothelioma may occur 30 to 60 years after exposure to asbestos. Many workers were exposed from the 1940s through the 1970s. Industrial and construction workers, along with their families (second hand exposure) are among those at risk for mesothelioma, lung cancer or gastro cancer (throat, stomach, colon). Even if you or your loved one settled an asbestosis case in the past, this may be a new claim, so call now.

Herd sports summer camp season off and running By John Carson BRAND Managing Editor
The end of the school year means more than just the start of summer vacation for students. It also signals the beginning of the Hereford Independent School District (HISD) Herd summer sports camp. This year’s slated wasted no time in leaving the blocks when the HISD Track Camp was held this week. Normally scheduled for mid-late June, the camp had to be moved up when the HISD Board of Trustees approved funding for repair and resurfacing work on the Whiteface Stadium track – which is set to begin in early June. For June proper, girls dominate the camp landscape. The Lady Herd Softball Camp is the first to hit the field when it opens Monday and runs through Thursday. Two daily sessions feature instruction for incoming third-sixth graders from 9 a.m.-noon, then incoming seventh-ninth graders take over from 1-4 p.m. Camp sessions will be held at the Hereford High School softball field or in the high school triple gym, depending on weather. Lady Whiteface coach Ashley Marquez will direct the camp, which carries a $40 fee. For details, contact Marquez at ashleymarquez@ herefordisd.net. The next week has the Lady Herd volleyball camp in the spotlight for a Monday-Thursday, June 11-14 run at Hereford Junior High. Like the softball camp, there will be a morning session for incoming thirdsixth graders and an afternoon one for incoming seventh-ninth graders.
Camp will take place in the HJH double gym and varsity gym under the instruction of Lady Whiteface coach Catherine Foerster. Cost is $40. For details, contact Foerster at 806-683-1812 or catherinebeville@herefordisd.net. The final girls-only camp will also feature the first local appearance of a mentor when the Lady Herd Basketball Camp his the hardwood, Monday-Thursday, June 18-21. New Lady Whiteface coach Bryan Lintner, a former Bushland head coach and long-time Canyon assistant, will get his first look at what the community has to offer when he takes the reins of the camp. With a 9 a.m.-noon, morning session for incoming third-sixth graders and a 1-4 p.m., afternoon gathering for incoming seventh-ninth graders, the camp will be
held in the HHS triple gym. For details, contact Lady Whiteface assistant coach Sarah Blakely at 806-8918062 or sarahblakely@herefordisd.net. The month ends with the start of the boys camp season as Whiteface coach C.J. Villegas directs the Herd Basketball Camp. Set for Monday-Thursday, June 25-28, the camp has a 9-11:30 a.m. session for incoming third-sixth graders and another from 1-3:30 p.m. for incoming seventhninth graders. Held in the HJH gymnasiums, the camp is $40 with registration 30 minutes to each session at the HJH gym. For details, contact Villegas at 806-363-7634 or 806363-7626. July is packed with five camps taking place during the month’s final three weeks – including all three co-ed camps.
A pair of those co-ed camps kick off the month’s activities as golf and wrestling camps run simultaneously, Monday-Thursday, July 9-12. Whiteface links coach Chris Sims leads the Herd Golf Camp in 9-11 a.m. sessions at John Pitman Golf Course in Hereford. The camp is open to all incoming first-ninth graders and carries a $40 fee. Registrations is 30 minutes prior to the start of the first session at the golf course. For details, contact Sims at 806-363-7626. At that same time, grapplers will be grinding away at the Herd Wrestling Camp in the HHS triple gym. Open to all incoming third-ninth graders, the camp runs from 9 a.m.noon under the direction of Whiteface coach Rachael Gutierrez. Cost is $40, and registration is 30 minutes prior to the first session. For information, contact Gutierrez at 806-363-7626. The following week focus shifts the Whiteface Field and the Herd Baseball Camp. Open to incoming thirdninth graders, the camp
runs from 9 a.m.-noon, Monday-Thursday, July 1619 and under the direction of Whiteface coach Bryan Moore. Registration for the $40 camp is 30 minutes prior to Monday’s session at Whiteface Field. For details, contact Moore at 806-363-7626. From the diamond to the hardcourt and final co-ed camp of the summer with the Herd Tennis Camp set to run Monday-Thursday, July 23-26. The camp effectively features three sessions with incoming third-fifth graders meeting from 9-10 a.m., and incoming sixth-eighth graders going from 10 a.m.noon. The session for all current and incoming high school students is 9 a.m.-noon. With the varied schedule, comes a modified fee plan. The third-fifth grade session is $10, while the sixth-
eighth grade session is $25. The full, three-hour, high school session is $40. The camp is under tutelage of Whiteface coach Cody Crouch and will meet at the HHS tennis courts. For more information, contact Crouch at 806-6831553 or codycrouch@herefordisd.net. Per tradition, the summer camp season winds down just before fall varsity preseason practices open with the Herd Football Camp. Slated for Monday-Thursday, July 30-Aug. 2, the camp is open for all incoming third-ninth graders and runs each day from 9 a.m.noon. Directed by head coach Don DeLozier and Whiteface coaching staff, the camp is $40 with registration at the Whiteface Stadium fieldhouse 30 minutes prior to Monday’s opening session. For details, contact DeLozier at 806-363-7626.

Year end at
Aikman
The close of the 2017-18 school year May 24 brought a bit of a variety of reactions from students at Aikman Elementary School. Below, dismissal brought excitement as students spilled onto the walkway to await transport home for summer vacation. Left, with arms full of the necessities for the start to a successful summer hiatus, third-graders Jaylan Olivarez, left, and Julian Penaran were ready for the vacation to begin. Right, for some the last day of school was much like others as Jesse Ortez and Erick Nunez help assistant principal Greg Johnston lower the flags. Far right, foregoing the hubbub and eschewing the routine, first-grader Kyobi Slusar is just wanting mom to hurry up and arrive. BRAND/John Carson
