– Ron Buratti and his wife Joan moved to Hilton Head in April 2016, just in time to experience hurricane Matthew. They moved here from Drayden, a small town in Southern Maryland on the western shore of Chesapeake Bay. Ron was born in Rhode Island and grew up in Johnston, a suburb of Providence. Ron went to the University of Rhode Island and earned his degree in electrical engineering. Ron began his career with IBM Manassas, VA in 1984 working on the design and test of submarine sonar systems and later airborne sonar for the US Navy. While at IBM he went on to complete his master’s degree in electrical engineering at Virginia Tech. He left IBM in 1994 to join RDA, a small company specializing in airborne anti-submarine warfare (ASW) for the Navy. Ron and Joan moved to Southern Maryland in 2003 to be closer to his work at Naval Air Station, Patuxent River. At RDA he has worked on with many interesting projects involving all aspects of airborne ASW including acoustics, radio-frequency telemetry, and magnetic detection of submarines. Ron’s job has taken him to many interesting places, including ships and aircraft in support of Navy testing. Six months ago, Ron switched to part-time consulting status when RDA was acquired by a larger defense contractor. In his newfound spare time, Ron has taken up golf and has joined the WiseGuys. He also enjoys playing with their two cats, doing ancestry research, biking, dining at our club and helping Joan with her many gardening projects. You might also see him assisting Joan by taking event photos for the newsletter.
Happy New Year to all of our members. You are what makes our Club great. 2022 started out on a very good note for your Board. On January 1st, the Board approved the appointment of Bill Hazel to the PRPC Board. In addition, Carl Nelson, POA President, advised that Cliff Kenneck would fill the position of POA Liaison. Both added value in our first Board meeting, and I am convinced going forward their involvement will be an added benefit to our Club.
The Board has finalized the golf tee sheets for 2022, following on from the efforts of Rick D’Arienzo. Thank you, Rick for all the hours you spent over the past two years on the Board. The sheets are posted in the portal, the bulletin board in the Sports Shop, and the Sport Shop desk staff has a copy as well as our Bag staff and Starters. The times will be reviewed regularly, and revisions will be made as needed. The Board also approved new golf policies with Heritage input and endorsement of the new policies. A letter from Jay Rusch and myself outlining the changes will be issued shortly. Anne Gerth, your social chair, and her committee have put together an exciting Q1 plan, including the first Asian dinner at Port Royal. Anne reviewed other plans, but I will not steal her thunder. There are big new ideas, and we hope our membership will join us at all of our social activities. The Board is undertaking a review of the 2022 budget to ensure we are spending your Activity Fee in the interest of all members. I have received many questions and comments on the use. Dan Renbarger, your Treasurer, is heading this review with a committee of four other Board members, and they will report their recommendations in the Board in February. We have also set up an ad hoc committee to develop a process on updating the Resource sections on the portal. Steve Riley, Dave Donnelly, and Dan Renbarger form this committee. Bill Hazel, your PRPC golf chair, Dave Donnelly and myself are working with Tammie Blank as they introduce a newly formed Ladies Golf Committee. If you have not tried the new egg bagel now being served by your Dining room staff, do so. It is so so good! Happy birthday to those that celebrated another year in January and to those celebrating in February. Most important “Be Safe”

New this year – the Club will begin to implement ball machine rental to help in stroke improvement Improve Your Physical and Mental Fitness at the Same Time: Try Yoga Former NCAA tennis player and current yoga instructor Barbara Soto is currently working with the University of South Florida men’s tennis team. Not only are the players hitting as well or better than before, but they are also remaining calm during tough moments of match play. They believe that their recent improvement is a result of the addition of yoga to their training program. “Yoga benefits players both physically – with balance, flexibility and core strength – and mentally. Playing with a peaceful state of mind rather than a stressed one allows you (to) think less and react quicker.” Also, yoga is helpful after play to aid in healthy cool downs. You may want to give it a try. If you haven’t done yoga, start slow and easy and see if it helps your game. Read more about it --Soto, Barbara, PTR, RYS. “Namaste & Net”. Tennis Magazine. We started the year with a fabulous forty-four members playing in the opening Super Men’s Day of 2022. It was great to have many of the new members join us and we look forward to the programme of events that have been laid out by the Sports Shop for the rest of the year. Ron Tucker, last year’s winner of the Champions Cup, got off to a fast start by winning the January event together with his playing partners of Don Muehlberger, Kevin Nattrass and Wes Warren. Congratulations on posting the low score of 54. Our second Super Men’s Day will be on February 16th, and then we are running a Men’s Open Golf Event on Monday, February 21st. This event is open to all Men who are resident in Port Royal. It is a fun, unstructured event designed to allow anyone to play and experience golf within Port Royal. So, if you have neighbors or friends who don’t play much golf, mention this event to them and get them to come along. Of course, if you want to have your own games within your foursome, a bit of friendly competition is perfectly OK. See the notice of the event on the next page and look out for more reminders in the Trident and e-blasts. Finally, the first Major of the year will take place in March. The dates have been advanced by 1 week, so please note the new dates below Upcoming Events: Super Men’s Day – Wednesday 16 February, 2022 Men’s Golf Open Day – Monday 21 February, 2022 2 Man Stroke-play Championship – Tuesday 8 March and Friday 11 March (Rain Dates: Monday 14 March and Wednesday 16 March)

Hello Port Royal Golfers, For those of you I have not met, my name is Bill Hazel, and I was recently appointed Golf Chairman for 2022. My wife Joan and I moved to Hilton Head and joined the Port Royal Club two years ago - and it has been a great experience! Prior to moving here, we were members of a private club in Pennsylvania for many years. The first thing I would like to do is to thank Rick D’Arienzo for all his efforts as Golf Chair over the last two years. He certainly set the bar high. The goal of the Golf Chair will not change – to help ensure the most enjoyable golfing experience possible for ALL golfing members. I look forward to working with Nigel Jones (men’s golf), Tammie Blank (women’s golf) and the Heritage team to set up a calendar of events that will attract a large majority of our members. Besides the events, we will work together through various working groups to address topics such as course conditions, handicaps/rules, etc., as well as planning our signature tournaments (Member Guest and The President’s Cup). Regarding conditions, I want to reiterate what Rick wrote about in January 2021. As we work with Heritage to optimize playing conditions, we can do our part. Specifically with respect to carts, sharing carts when feasible and strictly adhering to rules regarding where carts can and cannot go will help maintain and in some cases improve course conditions. Please don’t hesitate to let Nigel, Tammie or I know of any suggestion or complaints you may have – as well as things that you like and want to see continued.

My name is Nikki Riemer soon to be Dershaw. I am the Leisure Sales Manager for the Heritage Collection and have just celebrated my 7th year with the company. I am originally from Zimbabwe (Rhodesia), Africa and hale from good oldfashioned farming stock. I have been on Hilton Head for 20 years, so I am local, but it just doesn’t sound like it. My children are both in High School with one set to graduate this year. I look forward to meeting you soon.
There were no winners this month! The answer to the alcoholic beverage most ordered at Robber’s Row Grille is vodka tonic. Thanks to all those that participated. February Fun Quiz Take a look at this huge live Oak. It is located on the edge of the cart path on Barony. I’m sure many of you have hit this tree during your play. Be on the lookout for this tree and tell me which hole it’s on.
The first two people to email me at joan.buratti@icloud.com with the correct answer will win two glasses of wine at Robber’s Row Grille. Good luck!
