Heritage Quay is the official archive for the University of Huddersfield, acting as the guardian of the archives of organisations, families and individuals dating back over 200 years. Our 21st century role is to collect and secure the future of archives, both digital and physical, to preserve them for generations to come, making them as accessible and available as possible. During 2012-2017 ÂŁ2million from the Heritage Lottery Fund and the University of Huddersfield has been invested in transforming the archives. New spaces to store, research and explore collections have been built and this vibrant series of events, workshops and activities put in place. All activities are developed in collaboration with three Programming Groups, made up of interested volunteers who help us decide what to do and when. Through the Quay-Hole Tour If you want to find out more about our fascinating collections and see behind the scenes we run free guided tours every month. Just meet us at the entrance to Heritage Quay on the first Wednesday of the month at 1.00pm or the third Saturday of the month at 11.00am. FREE, drop-in
Adult Learning Our free courses are suitable for anyone over the age of 18. Historical Research Skills: Oral History in Practice Saturday 14 May 2.00pm-4.30pm Join Professor Paul Ward for an introduction to oral history interviewing (techniques, equipment and ethics) and digital editing skills. No experience necessary. Music and Motion Wednesday 18 and 25 May 6.00pm-9.00pm With the help of animator Dawn Feather come and create a claymation masterpiece inspired by the British Music Collection. You’ll learn the basics of animation and work together to produce something magical. Historical Research Skills: Curating an exhibition Wednesday 15 and 22 June 6.00pm-8.30pm Kirkless Museum and Galleries Curators will be here to give you a masterclass in putting on a show, including tips on object selection, layouts and text writing. Part of Adult Learners’ Week 2016. Clocking on at the Hops Wednesday 6 and 13 July 6.00pm-8.00pm On this unique course Heritage Quay staff will take you through the history of Huddersfield institution Hopkinson’s. What did they make, who worked there? All these questions (and more) will be answered!

Our events programme focuses on three key areas of our collections: local history, music and rugby league. Attendance is free for everything and there is a mix of drop-in and booked events. Second Rugby League Heritage Forum Saturday 9 April 10.00am-4.00pm Our annual get together for rugby league historians, statisticians and people interested in the history of rugby league. FREE, drop-in Cutting a Record Saturday 16 April 10.00am-4.00pm Inspired by our 20,000 British Dance Band records we’re giving you the chance to take home your own 7” vinyl. FREE, drop-in League Legends in conversation Tuesday 10 May 7.00pm-9.30pm Join legendary greats from rugby league days gone by for a funny, frank and fascinating talk about how the game was played. Appearing will be Terry Flanagan, and two other special guests. FREE, booking required Victorian Careers Fair Saturday 11 June 12.00pm-3.00pm In honour of the 175th birthday of the University come and find out what courses were on offer here in the Victorian era and what jobs you could get with them - and most importantly what they paid! Celebrating the Indomitables Saturday 2 July 12.00pm-4.00pm In the summer of 1946, one of the greatest British teams of all time went on tour down under. We’ll be sharing the story of their incredible journey. FREE, drop-in Conducting day Saturday 9 July 2.00pm-5.00pm We’re giving young people the chance to take part in this masterclass led by talented conductors from the Royal Northern College of Music, including the opportunity to conduct a live ensemble. Family Fun Fridays Hands-on and engaging activities for children 5-12, inspired by our amazing rugby league collections. All days are 11.00am-3.00pm. Beef, Brains, Brawn and Muscle: What makes a rugby player? Tuesday 12 July 7.00pm-9.00pm What does it take to be a modern rugby league player and how has that changed over the past 100 years? With the help of Dr Kevin Till (Leeds Beckett), we’re going to find out by exploring how diet, training and the game itself shape players. FREE, booking required Colne Valley Labour Party is 125! Saturday 23 July 11.00am-4.00pm One of Britain’s oldest Labour parties has a big birthday. Exhibitions Radical Roots: Politics in West Yorkshire March - June Discover the history of the early Labour movement in West Yorkshire and learn about some of the fascinating politicians in our collections. We’ve asked our researchers to pick out their favourite sources.
Pressure, Power and Patterns July - October Industry is at the heart of Huddersfield and in this special exhibition we are uncovering the story of two of the town’s most successful companies: Holsets and Hopkinson’s as well as showing off some of our beautiful textile sample books.
Spotlight on: The University of Huddersfield Collection This year we are celebrating the 175th birthday of University of Huddersfield, a history which we look after at Heritage Quay. The archive tells the story of our great institution, captured through minute books, school papers, and correspondence all of which reflect the issues affecting students and employers throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. The collection contains photographs and plans which show the ever changing landscape of the campus, records that trace the history of a person through the institution, newspaper cuttings, financial papers, course specifications and prospectuses. Through all of these you can trace the journey from Young Men’s Mental Improvement Society to today and the part we’ve played in the town around us. There are also related archives in the form of student and staff collections, student media in the Student Union collection, and other educational collections.

School Workshops at Heritage Quay - a day out on your doorstep Teachers! Heritage Quay offers your class an enjoyable and educational day out on your doorstep! Sporting, political, musical and local history themes are all brought to life through our FREE, interactive workshops, which enable pupils to discover for themselves the rich heritage of their home town, Huddersfield. Our free curriculum-based workshops are fully interactive and support learning objectives from Key Stages 1-3. See your pupils grow in confidence as they practice creative thinking, team work and presentation skills in an environment which uses the very latest technology to bring history to life. Our workshops include Build It! (History/Geography), Draw It! (Art/History) and Tell It! (a micro exhibition activity with a collection focus of your choice).
