Huddersfield’s fascinating political history is brought to life in Heritage Quay by the extensive range of collections that document the area’s 20th and 21st century political story. The overarching influence of the labour movement and the Labour Party on this narrative is keenly reflected through the collections. From the emergence and development of the Party’s grass roots (Huddersfield Labour Party Archive, Colne Valley Labour Party Archive and the Denby Dale Labour Party Archive) to the upper echelons of Westminster (J H Whitley, MP and Speaker of the House of Commons and JPW Mallalieu, MP Archives; Robert Blatchford Collections) and New Labour politics (Mick Clapham, MP Archive).

These collections reveal the local realities of the national party political system, and how this system has been informed and influenced by the unique character of Huddersfield’s political landscape. The library of famous statistician G.H. Wood covers economic and social history, education, health, housing and women’s history during the late 19th and early 20th century, and complement more contemporary leftwing publications including the Left Book Club and modern periodicals.

Introduction Administrative History Robert Peel Glanville Blatchford (17 Mar 1851 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 17 Dec 1943) was a socialist campaigner, journalist and author in the United Kingdom. He was a prominent atheist and opponent of eugenics. He was also an English patriot. In the early 1920s, after the death of his wife, he turned towards spiritualism. Born in Maidstone, he lived in Halifax for many years, before settling in Norwich. He launched The Clarion newspaper in 1891. He married Sarah Crossley in 1880 and had two daughters, Winifred and Dorothea and a son, Corrie. He died in Horsham, Sussex in 1943.

Collection Description This collection contains the personal and professional papers of Robert Blatchford, socialist campaigner and journalist collected first by his immediate family and then passed into the care of Baron Lord David Clark of Windemere. It contains handwritten and bound and published copies of his poems, articles and other writings, including a matching bound set of his publications from Lord Clark's library. The collection also includes a large amount of correspondence written by Blatchford to his daughters, his personal accounts, records of his war service, newspaper cuttings and scrapbooks of his career. Box 1: Personal papers, accounts, correspondence and articles written by Blatchford. Box 2: Books by Blatchford from Lord Clark's library, mostly in English. Box 3: Bound matching set of Blatchford's books.

Custodial History These papers were deposited with the University of Huddersfield as a permenant loan by Lord David Clark. These papers had been passed to Lord David Clark as a gift from the niece of Blatchford. They were most likely acquired from Winnie, Blatchford's daughter. Both Winnie and Dolly Blatchford did not marry and had no heirs, and his heir Corrie, died young.

Introduction Administrative History The Colne Valley Division Labour Union was founded on 21 July 1891 at a meeting of textile workers, a blacksmith (George Gardside) and a joiner (G H Cotton) at The Social Democratic Club in Slaithwaite. This was the very first constituency-based Labour Party in the country. Earlier in 1891 a Labour Union had been formed in Bradford. But unlike the Colne Valley organisation, the Bradford Labour Union was spread over several political constituencies. The Bradford and Colne Valley unions were the first two independent labour organisations in England and were among the founders of the national Independent Labour Party in 1893. By the end of 1891 over 200 members had joined the Colne Valley Division Labour Union. The Colne Valley Labour Division Labour Union's first President was George Garside, who went on to become the first Labour county councillor in the country when he was elected in 1892 for the Slaithwaite Electoral Division. In 1893 the Colne Valley Divisonal Labour Union affiliated to the Independent Labour Party, which had formed in Bradford, and this resulted in the Union adopting the Independent Labour Party's Constitution, Rules and Programme. At the Union's first meeting on 21 Jul 1891, the newly-installed Secretary was instructed to write to Tom Mann and invite him to become their parliamentary candidate. Tom Mann was one of the leading national figures in the early Labour movement; he had managed Keir Hardie's electoral campaign in Lanark in 1888, he was one of the producers of the Labour Elector journal, and he was one of the leading figures in the London Dock Strike in 1889. Tom Mann spoke at meetings of the Union in August and October 1891 and on both occasions he turned down the invitation to represent the Union as their parliamentary candidate, insisting that his work as a trade union organiser was more important. Following the successes of Independent working-class candidates in the 1892 General Election, the Union redoubled its efforts to persuade Tom Mann to become their candidate which he consented to. The unsuccessful campaign of the 1895 General Election was the only election in which Tom Mann represented the Union and in Feb 1896 he declined the opportunity to continue as the candidate for the Colne Valley Labour League (the new name of the Union). After speaking at meetings of the Colne Valley Labour League in 1906, Victor Grayson was adopted as the Labour candidate for the constituency in 1907 and he suceeded in winning the by-election that took place on 18 Jul 1907 as an Independent Labour Party candidate. Grayson became a popular socialist figure in the country but also had a strained relationship with the Independent Labour Party (ILP). In the 1910 General Election Victor Grayson lost his seat and the strained relationship with the ILP then reached breaking point, with the League voting to leave the ILP in May 1910. Following this The League then became affiliated with the British Socialist Party.

Page 13 of 104 Victor Grayson was readopted as the Party's parliamentary candidate in 1911, however from this time onwards Grayson's health was beginning to suffer and he would not be re-elected for the constituency. In May 1915 Victor Grayson resigned as the Party's parliamentary candidate. From 1917 the National Labour Party began setting up Divisional Parties and the Colne Valley Socialist League fell into line forming the Colne Valley Divisional Labour Party in April 1917. In 1918 Philip Snowden was adopted as the Party's parliamentary candidate and he went on to win the 1922, 1923, 1924 and 1929 elections in the constituency. Snowden became the first Labour Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1924, though he only held the position for 10 months, he would later hold the same office between 1929 and 1931. In 1931 Snowden chose to join the House of Lords, becoming Viscount Snowden of Icornshaw, instead of contesting the election for the Colne Valley. Councillor Ernest Marklew was then adopted as the Party's candidate. Marklew lost the 1931 election but won the 1935 election before he died in office in June 1939, which prompted a by-election in the constituency. This by-election was won by the Party's new candidate William Glenvil Hall, who would serve as MP for the constituency until he died in 1962, aged 75. During this time the Party's successes at Parliamentary level were not matched at a local level as the Conservative, Liberal and Independent candidates dominated the Colne Valley's Urban District Councils. The Colne Valley Labour Party celebrated its jubilee on 26 Jul 1941 in the Socialist Hall, Slaithwaite. Hall's successor Patrick Duffy won the 1963 by-election that followed his death and won the General Election that took place the following year. In March 1964 the Party changed its name to the Colne Valley Constituency Labour Party. Duffy would lose the 1966 General Election to the Liberal candidate Richard Wainwright who would go on to win future elections in 1974, 1979 and 1983. These years of Liberal victories in the constituency were split by David Clark's victory for the Colne Valley Labour Party in the 1970 election. Clark represented the constituency from 1970 to 1974 and after losing the February 1974 General Election, he became a Senior Lecturer in Politics at Huddersfield Polytechnic (now the University of Huddersfield) until 1979 when he returned to the House of Commons as Member of Parliament for South Shields, Tyne and Wear. In 1983 the boundary of the Colne Valley constituency underwent the most significant revision in its history. The constituency lost Saddleworth to the new Littleborough constituency and Denby Dale to Dewsbury constituency, and gained Crodland Moor, Milnsbridge, Longwood and Lindley. These changes in the constituency's boundaries had a significant affect upon the performance of the Colne Valley Labour Party as it lost some key Labour areas (Denby Dale) and gained Conservative and Liberal areas (Lindley, Saddleworth). Page 14 of 104 under the new boundaries in 1983 produced the worst Labour result in over 70 years (David Williams came in third place and over 7,400 votes behind the winning Liberal candidate, Richard Wainwright). The minutes of 13 April 1983 (CVL/GV/1/1/1983) record the inaugural meeting of the new Colne Valley Constituency Labour Party following the constituency boundary changes. In 1987 Graham Riddick became the first Conservative Party MP for the Colne Valley constituency in its 102 year history (beating the Liberal candidate Nigel Jonathan Priestley into second and the Labour candidate John Andrew Harman into third). Riddick held his seat during the 1992 election (with the Labour candidate John Andrew Harman moving up into second ahead of the Liberal candidate Nigel Jonathan Priestley). During the 1997 General Election the Colne Valley Labour Party returned its first parliamentary candidate, Kali Mountford, since David Clark's term of 1970-1974. Kali Mountford won the 2001 and 2005 elections, before Jason McCartney won the 2010 and 2015 General Elections for the Conservative Party. Wainwright first became the Liberal candidate for Colne Valley in 1956, and stood in the 1959 General Election, the 1963 byelection, and the 1964 General Election, until he finally gained the seat in 1966. At the following General Election in 1970 Wainwright was defeated by Labour's David Clark, but re-gained the seat at the Feb 1974 General Election. He retained his seat until he retired at the 1987 General Election. The newspaper articles cover a range of stories including several articles about Richard Wainwright swimming in the moorland stream at Eastergate, Marsden in Aug 1973. This was in reaction to David Clark's (MP) claims that bathing in the area was becoming increasingly unlikely because of Huddersfield Corporation's abstraction of water from the streams. Introduction Administrative History Over the last 100 years Denby Dale's geographical location (as a village and civil parish situated in the middle of a number of large towns) has meant that the votes of its residents have changed constituencies many times. Previously in the Holmfirth constituency, Denby Dale was part of the Penistone constituency 1950-1955, Colne Valley 1955-1983, Dewsbury 1983-1997, Wakefield 1997-2010, Dewsbury 20102013, Colne Valley and Denby Dale 2013-2015, and Dewsbury 2015-present. Throughout these boundary changes the Denby Dale Labour Party has continued in its work of promoting support for Labour Party candidates in the area. As well as constituency boundary changes, the Party has also had to contend with the significant implications of local government restructures over the years. The Local Government reorganisation of 1938 created the Denby Dale Urban District Council which was divided into the four wards of Clayton West, Denby Dale and Cumberworth, Emley and Skelmanthorpe; with the major authority for the area being the West Riding County Council. The Denby Dale Urban District Council would be dominated by Labour members throughout its history; the final council that was elected in 1972 was comprised of 16 Labour members, 2 Liberals members and 2 independent members. The minute book of the Denby Dale Urban District Council Labour Group has survived and is available in the collection. In 1974 the Denby Dale Urban District Council was then absorbed into the newly created Kirklees Metropolitan Council. As well as working to elect Labour candidates to local, parliamentary and European elections, the Party also worked to improve the political education of the local community. This was a feature of all of the Party's meetings and social events, which included coffee mornings and evenings, pie and pea suppers, Halloween parties, fashion parties, bonfire night parties, Easter bonnet parades, and spring fairs and bazaars. From 1977 monthly meetings of the Denby Dale Labour Party were held at The Denby Dale Pie Hall, and more recently meetings have also been held at Denby Dale Cricket Club. After moving to the area in 1964, Mrs Winifred Wheable-Archer became a driving force behind the Denby Dale Labour Party, holding many prominent officer posts including Vice-Chairman. She contested and won local elections for the Denby Dale Urban District Council and Kirklees Metropolitan Council between 1967 and 1987, and remained a very active member of the party. The minutes also record: the establishment of a Young Socialist Group for the ward; the nominations of local magistrates; the 1969 ward boundary changes; addresses made by local political figures such as David Clark; and donations made by the Party to the South African Aid appeal. On 29 January 1969 the minutes record the fears of the Party that the on-going fraud investigations in the council might reflect badly on the Party as an extension of the council. On 22 January 1970 the minutes record an address by David Clark who talked about Labour's victory in the election, winning back Colne Valley constituency, the economy, and other social issues. On 22 July 1971 the Party passed a resolution asking for action at ward and urban party level to make the public aware of the intention of the NCB (National Coal Board) to start outcropping in the urban district. On 28 April 1969 the minutes record that the Party passed a resolution to be submitted to the National Conference which stated that the Party 'deplores the practice of private patients being given preferential treatment on hospitals under the control of the ministry'. On the 18 November 1970 the minutes record that the Party submitted a resolution to the General Management Committee that ''in view of the recent Tory proposals, this constituency party calls upon the next Labour Government to introduce genuine Socialist Policies immediately upon taking office''. This resolution was sent for consideration for submission to the Annual Conference but failed to win the support of the constituency. In 1971 the minutes record that the Party donated money to the Anti-Apartheid movement and the African Liberation Movement. On 21 Jul 1971 the minutes record the passing of a resolution, with copies sent to the local press, the constituency executive and regional council, that the Party ''expresses considerable dismay at the applications being made by the National Coal Board to operate extensive opencast workings in Denby Dale and neighbouring areas...we call upon the ward parties to take action to lead public objections in their districts''. On 19 January 1972 the Party wrote to the local branches of the NUM (National Union of Mineworkers) to show their support of the strike and to inform them that a Distress Fund would be available to financially assist miners in the area. The minutes include the election of the committee members at regular intervals, details of membership drives held, social and fundraising events organised and the campaigning and canvassing for both local and general elections undertaken by committee members. There is also reference to possible boundary changes which would affect the area; the suggestions being that Clayton West could be subsumed by the Colne Valley constituency party and the Scissett branch could merge into Clayton West. There is also mention of the 'Campaign for Labour Party Democracy' which called for the party to be more accountable to the members over implementation of policies. On the 14th Feb 1976 a resolution was passed to be taken to the next AGM by the branch representatives that the CLP 'applaud the removal of our Ambassador to Chile' as a result of the torture of a British national and that they 'call on this Government to break all links, political and economic, with the Government of Chile'. Item Denby Dale Parish Co-Ordinating Committee Labour Party minute book 1 volume Minutes of the meetings of the Denby Dale Parish Co-Ordinating Committee Labour Party from 1975 to 1987. The Co-Ordinating Committee was made up of all the individual members of the party in the electoral ward. The purpose of the committee, as stated in the minutes, was to short list candidates for the local elections, co-ordinate the work of branch committees in election campaigns, organise propaganda work for local government and arrange fund raising and social activities. This minute book dates from the inaugural meeting of the Denby Dale parish Labour Party Co-Ordinating Committee during which the purpose of the committee and its protocols were decided upon and the first officers were elected. It was resolved that members were to be encouraged to attend Union meetings and to look out for new members for the Party. The minutes include reference to a speech received from Peter Hardy MP regarding the 1974/1975 Parliamentary Session, discussions of the boundary changes proposed by the Kirklees Council which would impact upon Denby Dale, much discussion of the preparation and canvassing for elections and the proposed candidates for both the Kirklees District Council and the Parish Council. There is also reference to the possibility of starting a Young Socialist Group in the area. Notable resolutions minuted by the Committee include a statement expressing their approbation of the Tory controlled Kirklees Council's suggestion that they were considering the abolition of free school transport for children living over 2 miles from school. The Co-Ordination Committee felt that would ''cause great hardship in this rural area''. In June 1978 there was a resolution

Changes within the establishment of the local branches were also noted. In 1982 the Emley branch wrote to say their membership was too small to sustain the branch party. It was suggested that Emley, Clayton West and Scissett merge into one party. Much of the minutes are given over to the discussion of parish and local council elections, the canvassing for the election campaigns, production of election material and discussions of the candidates. There is also reference to the 1976 Kirklees local election in which Labour won by only a slim margin making it the first time the district was not a safe Labour seat. Throughout the minutes there are many references to the various campaigns of Winifred Wheable and Peter Hildrew who both ran for a number of positions including Local Councillor, County Councillor and member of the European Parliament. There are also discussions of local matters such as the suggested boundary rearrangement that would merge Denby Dale in with Dewsbury and the desire of the branch to establish a Young Socialist Group and a Socialist and Trade Union Museum in Hull (1978). The minutes show the discussion of matters internal to the branch party such as the creation of two new positions in the party; Membership Secretary and Political Secretary and a tribute paid to Harold Auckland upon his death. There are also resolutions passed to be taken by the representatives to other meetings such as the AGM and Management meeting. In 1977 the branch registered its concern over the cut backs on education expenditure by Kirklees Council and on a separate occasion called for greater public control of the drug industry. In 1979 a resolution was passed stating that the ''CLP deplores the decision of the Education Secretary to ... lift the statutory requirements for the provision of school milk, meals and transport''. The minutes record the Party's work to ensure the upkeep of the constituency's facilities such as public toilets, playing fields, local party membership drives, fund raising events, care of war memorials, drains and sheltered accommodation. The minutes record the decreasing membership numbers and money raised by the Party over the majority of this period. The minutes also record: the merger of the Emley Branch with the Clayton West and Scissett Branch in Oct 1982 before then merging with Skelmanthorpe in 1987; the boundary changes to the Denby Dale area; and the nominations of candidates and the subsequent canvassing work and campaigns for the parliamentary, parish, district party, constituency party, county party, euroconstituency party, and central organisation elections. On 1 Oct 1981 the minutes record the decision of the quarterly Constituency General Meeting which mandated the National Conference Delegate to vote for Tony Benn in the election for the Deputy Leader of the Labour Party. The minutes of this meeting also record that the Branch went against the Labour Party's national appeal to distribute 100 fund appeals to people in the area because they believed that it may put people off the party by looking too 'mercenary'. In 1984 the minutes record the Branch's invitation to the local reps from the NUM (National Union of Mineworkers) to address the Branch Party meeting regarding the miners' dispute. The minutes record the issues discussed, actions taken and decisions made at each meeting. This includes committee admin such as the election of members, applications of new party members, correspondence received and sent and the organisation of various events to raise money for the party. The committee's involvement with local issues, such as road closures, sewage works, building proposals and schools; and with wider Labour Party issues such as campaigning for the local, County Council and general elections are also noted in the minutes. The committee received talks from various prospective Parliamentary candidates, most frequently Ann Taylor, as well as councillors and other influential political figures such as Tam Dayell. The minutes also record a number of resolutions agreed upon by the Constituency Labour Party to be reported to the party at the next AGM or General Committee Meeting. Minutes record the Constituency Labour Party's reaction to a number of local and national events. There is a resolution recorded the all members of the Kirklees Labour Group should 'put the overall interests of the Party before the interests of any one section' which is raised in response to reported divisions in the Labour Party. It is also minuted that a collection was held for the Miners' Hardship Fund at the conclusion of each meeting and that the committee would like to organise something to raise money for the anti-apartheid movement. There is also a mention that schools in Dewsbury had been threatened by the BNP (British National Party) and the National Front and discussion relating to a letter the Party received from an Iranian student concerning the cruelty of the Khomeini regime. There is naturally a focus on the political career of Winifred Wheable-Archer and other prominent local party members such as Harold and Nellie Auckland, David Clark, Bill and Linda Sugrue, Molly Dixon, Arthur Belcher, Marjorie Lawton, Tom Megahy, Colin and Doreen Watson. The document also outlines the creation of the youth section of the local party in 1968 as formed by Brendan Loughnane. Various achievements of the Urban District Council are also highlighted. Introduction Administrative History Sir Joseph Percival William Mallalieu (18 June 1908 - 13 March 1980) was a British Labour Party politician, journalist, author and naval officer. He was known predominantly as Bill or William Mallalieu, but was also known by the nickname 'Curly' Mallalieu (which he acquired at Primary School). JPW Mallalieu was born in Delph, Saddleworth, on 18 June 1908 into a Nonconformist family with a rich political background. His father, Frederick Mallalieu, was Liberal MP for Colne Valley from 1916 until 1922, when he was defeated by Philip Snowden, the first Labour Chancellor of the Exchequer. While his brother, Sir Edward Lancelot 'Lance' Mallalieu, was also Liberal MP for the Colne Valley constituency, 1931-1935, before he joined the Labour Party and served as MP for Brigg, Lincolnshire, from 1948 until he retired in 1974. Like his father and brother, JPW Mallalieu studied at Dragon School, Cheltenham before going on to Trinity College, Oxford where became the first person in history to win a Rugger Blue and be president of the Oxford Union. After Oxford, Mallalieu won a Commonwealth Fellowship in economics at the University of Chicago and spent two years in the United States engaged in economics research. While in America Mallalieu underwent a political conversion from Liberalism to Socialism after witnessing the depravity brought about by the Great Depression; this led him to join the British Labour Party from Chicago in October 1931. During his time in America Mallalieu also began his career as a journalist, working on local newspapers in Kentucky, including The Lexington Herald where he covered stories such as the Police beat and sports, notably American Football and ice hockey. He then spent six months in South Africa and seven months in continental Europe, mostly in France, before returning to Britain in 1932 and being appointed American Editor for The Financial News in London. Mallalieu was then made political correspondent for the paper and spent a year and a half reporting from the House of Commons. Mallalieu continued to write for London newspapers from 1933-1942, including The Financial News, The Evening Standard, The Daily Express, he also wrote sports journalism for the Spectator. Upon his return to Britain at the end of 1932 Mallalieu joined the Holborn Labour Party. He was then adopted as the Labour candidate for Huddersfield in 1936 but because of the intervention of war it was another nine years before he got the chance to fight his first Parliamentary election. Mallalieu started the Second World War as a Conscientious Objector which he said was 'entirely for political reasons' because he didn't believe in the Chamberlain government of the time, but he quickly changed his mind upon realising the intent of the Nazi leadership. He joined the Royal Navy in 1942 as an ordinary seaman and rose to the rank of Lieutenant by the end of the War. His active service involved protecting the convoy routes to Russia through the Arctic waters, he served on board a destroyer which was camouflaged as HMS Meltham. During his service he wrote the novel Very Ordinary Seaman (1944) which was based directly on his experiences of serving in the navy during wartime. Page 58 of 104 the role of Commander's Messenger, Portsmouth, and gave him two months in which to complete the work; the only condition was that the book should be 'broadly favourable to the navy. Not a whitewash but not a hatchet job either' (On Larkhill, p.204). The book proved to be very popular, selling 64,000 copies in hardback and many more in paperback. Speaking to Yorkshire Life magazine in 1979, Mallalieu answered the question of why he had chosen that title for the book, 'Because that's what I was, a very ordinary seaman. I couldn't even tie knots properly.' (Yorkshire Life, March 1979). The royalties for the book would see Mallalieu through his election campaign in 1945 when he had no other source of income. Very Ordinary Seaman was Mallalieu's third book. He had written his first, Rats, in a London air raid shelter during the blitz. The book was a criticism of big business that profited from the war (e.g. munitions companies), and was published in 1941 under the pseudonym, The Pied Piper. He wrote his second book, Passed to You, Please, in 1942 in a Huddersfield nursing home where he underwent an operation shortly before he enlisted in the navy. This book was a criticism of the bureaucracy, red-tape and inefficiencies of the Civil Service. During his naval service in Portsmouth he met Rita Tinn (Harriet Rita Riddle Tinn) who was an officer in the Wrens (Women's Royal Naval Service). Rita was the daughter of Jack Tinn, manager of Portsmouth Football Club, and prior to the War Rita had worked as her father's Secretary, where she was the only female executive in football at the time. Mallalieu and Rita were marred in 1945 shortly before the General Election took place on 5 July. They went on to have two children; Ann Mallalieu (later Baroness Mallalieu QC) was born on 27 November 1945 and was Christened at the House of Commons in the same year (photos of this occassion can be found within the archive); and Ben Mallalieu, who wrote the tailpiece to his father's final book On Larkhill. JPW Mallalieu left the navy as a Lieutenant to fight the General Election as the Labour candidate for Huddersfield. Throughout the election campaign JPW and Rita Mallalieu stayed with Arthur Gardiner who was Secretary for the Huddersfield Labour Party and Mallalieu's agent and friend. Upon opening his election campaign at Northumberland Street School in June 1945, Mallalieu declared that 'I have not the slightest intention of sailing under any false colours. I am a Socialist, and it is as a Socialist and nothing else that I am going to ask for your votes on July 5.' Mallalieu won the election, achieving the biggest swing of votes in the country, converting the previous Liberal majority of 13,000 into a 9,000 majority for Labour. On the day that the result was announced he addressed a crowd in Huddersfield's Beast Market estimated to be 20,000 strong. Of his work in Clement Atlee's post war government (1945-1951) Mallalieu said that it was 'A really exciting period... we had a tremendous programme and we worked steadily through that torrent of legislation. I suppose it really spoiled us. There was nothing like it again... I remember one week when we had three all-nighters in a row. One evening I went on to the Commons Terrace for a breath of fresh air, sat down on one of the benches and was awakened next morning by the sound of traffic going across Westminster Bridge. Upon reaching parliament Mallalieu gravitated to the left of the party, often following the movements of Aneurin "Nye" Bevan, which sometimes brought him into conflict with the rest of the party. After voting against the Ireland Bill in 1947, he was sacked as Private Secretary to John Strachey, Ministry of Food. He also found himself in conflict with a large section of the Party in 1953 when in an article for The Tribune he suggested that many Labour MPs only pretended to agree with left-wing policies in public but secretly voted with the right wing of the Party in parliament. He argued that to prevent this Labour MPs should vote on policy decisions vocally rather than secret ballot, which was against Labour Party rules. This resulted in an NEC meeting to discuss whether he should be expelled from the Party, but Mallalieu managed to retain his position by apologising for his comments. JPW Mallalieu went onto be Member of Parliament for Huddersfield 1945-1950, and then for Huddersfield East, 1950-1979, following boundary changes to the Kirklees area. In 1964 Labour won the General Election for the first time in 13 years, and Harold Wilson appointed Mallalieu to various ministerial positions over the course of his term. First Junior Navy Minister (1964-1966) and then Minister of Defence for the Royal Navy (1966-1967), before being appointed Minister of State at the Board of Trade (1967-1968) and the Ministry of Technology (1968-1969). During his time as Minister of State at the Board of Trade, Mallalieu instituted new safety measures for merchant shipping and trawlers at a time when ships were being constantly lost at sea. These measures centred around the idea of having a "mother" ship in the middle of any shipping fleet that was captained by a naval officer who had the authority to return ships back to port if the weather became too dangerous. Throughout his political career Mallalieu continued as a writer and journalist. In the 1950s he continued writing sporting essays for the Spectator and wrote political commentaries for the Tribune and the New Statesman. On radio he was a regular member of the Any Questions? panel for over 20 years, and on television he was one of the first members of the Tonight team and one of the four regular presenters of What the Papers Say on Granada TV during the 1950s. He also went on to publish four more books, Sporting Days, 1955, and Very Ordinary Sportsman, 1957, were collections of some of his favourite sporting essays, while Extraordinary Seaman, 1957, was a biography of Captain Lord Cochrane, 10th Earl of Dundonald who had a successful and eventful career within the British, Chilean and Brazilian navies during the 19th century. Mallalieu's final book was On Larkhill, an autobiography that covers the years of his life before he became an MP. Mallalieu died before he could complete the first draft of the book but it was published posthumously in 1983. According to Ben Mallalieu's Tailpiece to the work, his father's intention for the book was to 'write about his times and his background and what had led him to be standing in the 1945 election as a candidate on the left wing of the Labour Party.' (On Larkill, p. 206) JPW Mallalieu retired in 1979 after nearly 34 years in Parliament and was knighted in James Callaghan's resignation honours list. He was Huddersfield's longest serving MP, having kept his seat through all eight General Elections that took place between 1945 and 1979, until Barry Sheerman (Mallalieu's successor as Labour MP for Huddersfield East) broke this record in 2013. He held his 397th and final surgery for ď&#x192;&#x201C;University of Huddersfield, 2016

Page 60 of 104 constituents on 6 June 1979 in the Labour Rooms, Station Street, Huddersfield. Mallalieu was appointed the first Freeman of Kirklees on 27 Jan 1980 in a ceremony that took place in the Great Hall at Huddersfield Polytechnic University. He was also made a life member of the Press Club, the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) and the Huddersfield Branch of the NUJ. He was a keen sportsman, playing cricket until he was 58, for both the Lords and Commons teams, his Buckinghamshire village (Ickford), and he organised the Tribune v Statesman matches. He was also a dedicated fan of both Huddersfield Town Football Club and Yorkshire Cricket Club. Joseph Percival William Mallalieu died on 13 March 1980. The address at his funeral was given by Michael Foot, MP, who had been a very close friend of Mallalieu's throughout his literary and political career.

Introduction Administrative History JH Whitley (1866-1935) was Speaker of the House of Commons from 1921 to 1928, but during his lengthy and varied career he was also a Halifax mill owner, a champion of universal education, a revered local politician, Chairman of the Royal Commission on Labour in India (which reported in 1931) and Chairman at the BBC (1932-1935).

Section General Strike 17 items This section includes copies of various newspapers and their opinion on the General Strike. The British Worker was the newspaper Trade Union Congress (TUC). The British Gazette was a short lived Government newspaper produced only during the General Strike. Thus the copies of these newspapers within this section highlight the contrasting opinions of the TUC and the Government. The copies of the Daily Mail and the Daily Express within this section, as well as the 6 editions of the Daily Graphic, provide opinions from newspapers that didn't solely focus on the General Strike. The General Strike lasted for nine days, from 4 May to 13 May 1926. The Strike was called for by the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in an attempt to force the government to stop wage reductions and poor working conditions. The Strike was most
