Editor’s Letter Getting married is something some women start dreaming about as little girls, and one of the key aspects of any wedding – other than one’s spouse – is the dress. With that in mind, we have highlighted the gowns of fashion designer Christos Costarellos. His Grecian -inspired gowns capture the essence of bridal season with classic features that include modern enhancements.

Beyond choosing the “perfect gown,” other wedding planning-related challenges can transform a normally calm individual into a notorious “bridezilla.” We offer timely tips to prevent that, however, in an article titled “How Not to Become a Bridezilla.” In addition, we followed that up with advice on enjoying your wedding day.

Wedding Day Advice 5 Tips to Enjoying Your Wedding Day

n many cases, brides are so concentrated on the preparations and details of the wedding that they forget to take it all in and actually enjoy the day.

Weddings are huge ordeals with many moving parts, so it’s a very stressful time for the bride.

David Anthony, author of “Don’t Let Your Wedding Be the Death of You,” weighs in on his best tips to calm even the most anxious brides.

Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff There is so much planning that goes into coordinating a beautiful wedding. For example, brides have to pick the venue, come up with the guest list, select a photographer, and much more. However, when all is said and done and 10 HERS Mag azi n e | Feature S tor y

the wedding day has come, Anthony advises the bride to not sweat the small stuff. “The one thing I want to make sure happens is that when the day of your wedding comes, no matter how big of a control freak you’ve been during the process, no matter how much Mom has gotten involved, no matter what things have happened through the whole process that have made you angry, or happy or sad, just enjoy the day of the wedding,” Anthony said.

He also mentions that whatever is going to happen the day of the wedding is going to happen, so just have fun with it and enjoy. If the 3-year-old ring bearer stops in the middle of walking down the aisle and cries, just go with it. The child’s parent will quickly grab the little ring bearer, and then the show goes on. Just think, these will just be funny memories to share in the future. hers-magazine.com

Prepare a Well-Organized Plan The best way to ensure a wedding with the least amount of issues is to ensure all the pre-planning is well organized and communicated to all parties involved. In his book, Anthony cautions brides about the various hazards associated with the planning process that can ruin a bride’s day. One of his tips is to make sure the timeline is accurate and that all parties, such as the photographer, DJ, caterers and people giving speeches know what is going on before the big day.

The best way to deal with this is to hire a wedding planner or pick a venue that has someone in charge throughout the wedding reception. However, if finances are tight, delegating the coordination of tasks to a friend or family member could work as well.

Come Up with a Mantra Studies have shown that focusing on a mental device, such as mantras, can reduce stress. The trick is to come up with a word or a phrase that can be repeated over and over again to help ease the building anxiety. Share it with all the bridesmaids so they can participate as well. The whole bridal party will probably get a good laugh from it, which is also a good stress reliever.

Here are few examples of mantras:

“I chose peace.”

“I am fortunate.”

“I am calm”

Be in the Moment When asked about the wedding, many brides say that their wedding night was a blur. With all the time and effort it took planning the wedding, it would be a shame to not remember the wonderful memories created that night.

Be in the moment when talking to guests — don’t worry about getting to every person, they will understand.

Keep Loved Ones Close Anthony suggests enlisting the help of the bride’s closest friends and family. Always keep in mind no one ever gets through a wedding with zero issues. Something always happens, and that is when friends and family step in. For example, if a bridal party were ready to walk down the aisle, but the zipper of one of the bridesmaid’s dresses broke, this would be best to keep from the bride. The bride can depend on the other bridesmaids to quickly take care of the situation. Devoted friends and family are everything in life, so if anything happens, brides should be able to have peace of mind with the support of loved ones behind them.

Be in the moment during the father-daughter dance since this is the moment the father of the bride has been waiting for. Being the moment for this special event will help make it memorable for both the bride and father.

And remember to be in the moment when spending time as bride and groom. This is the first day of a new life together — make it a memory that will last forever.

Experience your wedding as it happens, caught up in the present. Enjoy each second of your special day, and revel in every bit of it. Be in the moment and make the memory of your wedding a cherished one.

edding planning is hard work, so it’s difficult to stay focused on what’s most important — having a day dedicated to celebrating yourself and your future spouse. Oftentimes, unmet expectations, the mess of clashing families and tedious choices can push a bride over the edge, causing brides to be referred to as the most unholy of terms: a “bridezilla.”

There’s no foolproof way to avoid the drama that seems to go hand-in-hand with wedding ceremonies, and there’s no certainty that there won’t be a meltdown, but there are some steps you can take to prevent anger and unrest from putting a damper on your big day. Below are some tips for staying in the right mindset and enjoying your wedding without ruining it for anyone else and being called the “b” word.

It’s your day, but remember other people will be there, too.

You’ll have friends, family and loved ones there to see you enter a new chapter of your life. Although this is your wedding day, you don’t want to make your guests miserable with ridiculous demands or a bad attitude. Make all of your own choices but keep your guests’ considerations in mind.

Order whatever flavor cake you want, make your own crazy signature drinks, bring your cat down the aisle with you.

Just don’t have an overly expensive dress code or wait until the last minute to make major decisions that may greatly impact your guests. You want your guests to have a good time at your wedding. Show them your best side by putting on a great party and staying positive. The wedding is important, but it isn’t the most important — the people you celebrate your life with are.

Have clear communication with guests, planners, caterers and all those involved.

Be kind but direct about your expectations for your wedding day by putting everything in writing. Double (or triple) check with your guests that they have received the proper information and understand the protocol. If you don’t want anyone to wear white, let them know. If you want cash instead of gifts, find a tasteful way to put that information on the invitation. If you have a registry with items you’ve been pining after for years, use a service that has priority settings. Effective communication will prevent any confusion, and hence, any disasters.

If you don’t want your phone strapped to you your entire wedding, have someone manning it for you at all times.

Let your maid of honor or wedding planner be the point of contact for all things under the “Wedding Day Emergency” category. You want to live in the moment, but you also want things to run smoothly. emember to communicate with your partner about your feelings. If you need a moment to collect yourself, do that. If you need to be one-on-one with your spouse-to-be before you head to the reception,

do that. Show your love for them on your special day, and don’t be afraid to be honest about anxiety, irritation or sadness. Getting married is a big deal, and we are allowed to feel all those feelings that come along with making big life decisions.

Another important tip about communication would be to have those hard conversations with problematic family members before the wedding, which leads us to our next tip.

Keep family ties in mind.

Do Uncle Mark and Aunt Jenny not get along? Make a note of that in your planning, but also let them know that it is important that they set aside their differences for a few hours to celebrate your nuptials. Be strategic with your seating chart so that Mark and Jenny won’t know that the other person is there.

Another great idea is to have plenty of decorations to look at such as photo albums and videos. Attractions such as cornhole, drinking games, couple-themed matching games and speeches, will keep everyone entertained so no one is bored enough to start another family feud.

Remember who you are marrying.

Don’t be afraid to say “no,” and “yes!”

You are not marrying your future spouse’s parents and their crazy emotional baggage, but you are also marrying your spouse and whatever their baggage is too. If they have a kid from a previous relationship, you must fully accept their presence at the ceremony. If they have a brother you hate but they love, you must put your differences aside for one day and just be a family. After all, that is the end goal of the ceremony — to unite two people, two families to become one. If there are any grievances between you and your spouse, then air them before the wedding. Know who you are marrying and accept them without expecting them to magically change who they are into who you want them to be. When you put a ring on it, you’re promising forever, through thick and thin, through midlife crises and all chapters of life.

At the heart of it all, it’s your day. If something makes you uncomfortable, then you don’t have to do it, and if you’re dying to make your wedding Harry Potter themed, well, go for it. Live your life. Presumably, this is your first and only marriage (and if it’s not, that’s okay — even more of a reason to really chase your bliss if the first time around didn’t fulfill your wildest dreams), so make it count. Remember, you want to be kind, courteous and do what you can to enjoy your big day. But it’s okay to be a little bossy too, as long as you’re tactful and have respect for those around you.

Do not over-invite and underdeliver.

This one seems simple. Don’t invite over one hundred guests if you aren’t prepared to feed, entertain and greet all of them at least once. Cutting corners to save money may seem convenient at the time, but when your 150 guests go home hangry and disappointed, you’ll regret inviting out of your financial comfort zone.

No one likes a hangry bride. Stay hydrated, fed and remember to wear a bib!

If anything goes wrong, remember that it will be a funny story you’ll tell your kids one day.

It’s bridal season and it’s time to make one of the most important decisions for your wedding—the food. Deciding which catering style can be difficult. You’re serving hundreds of guests and you need to decide which style—buffet or plated—best suits your reception and your bank account. But don’t stress! Here is a list of pros and cons for each catering style so you can easily decide which form of catering is best for you.

BUFFET-STYLE CATERING: Buffets are a type of catering style in which serving dishes are set upon long tables where guests serve themselves in a singlefile line. Alternatively, there may be servers giving out food from behind the table to control the serving sizes.

Pros: This catering style is the most cost-effective catering

method. Instead of hiring hundreds of servers for a plated dinner, buffets require little to no waiters, which means lower costs.

Additionally, this catering method provides a variety of food options for your guests to choose from.

Cons: Since each guest has to wait in line to receive their food, long lines may start to form. Moreover, since guests have to serve themselves and carry their own plates, accidents are prone to happen. While buffets are cheaper than plated dinners, having more food options and self-service requires larger quantities, adding to your costs.

PLATED DINNER: Plated dinner is the traditional option for a wedding reception.

Guests sit down in a formal setting and are served three courses: appetizer, entrée and dessert. Traditionally, guests have two to three options to choose from for their entrée.

Pros: Plated dinners are less

chaotic. Since each guest sits and waits for their food to be served, everyone receives their meals at the same time. Also, while waiting for your entrees, you can squeeze in toasts or dances to keep your guests entertained.

Cons: Plated dinners require more servers and kitchen staff,

The Braided Updo This simple hairstyle is the perfect DIY hairstyle. A simple twist and a few bobby pins is all it takes. Pull your hair into a low ponytail. Wrap the hair around the pony to form a bun and pin it with clips.

A Braided Crown Another easy DIY braided hairstyle is a braided crown. Start from the right (or whichever side you prefer) and braid from one side to the other to form a crown. To achieve this messy crown, pull the braided crown apart to make it loose. Lastly, comb out a few tendrils to frame your face and you have mastered this look for your wedding.

If you want to be a real princess, this DIY hairstyle is for you. Fishtails can be pretty tricky but with practice comes perfection. Simply, part your hair, grab two pieces from each side of your part and weave them together until the fishtail starts to form.
