Growing your business from the ground up since 1890
July 2015
Dear Valued Customer, Our 125th year has been successful and exciting. We have come to know how fortunate we are to be in relationship with many wonderful people who own or work for our highly valued customers and venders. We have received letters, cards and a very special gift from Pan American Seed commemorating our anniversary year. So I thank you all for recognizing and helping us reach this milestone. In January of 2015 we launched our new web site with improved navigation for placing orders across all product lines and more efficient access to our vender’s inventories and your account information. I invite you to see what’s new at Michell's at www.michells.com. In addition, this year we established our first Board of Advisors, whose members have strong experience with Michell's, the horticultural industry here and abroad, corporate law and accounting and business development and banking. We are looking forward to the future and the changing needs of our valued customers. Today we are seeing a strengthening of consumer demand for our industry’s products. The longer than expected winter made for eager customers as the spring unfolded. In some cases wholesale producers could not keep up with stronger than expected demand at the retail level. A second straight year of expansion has us all hoping for a trifecta! To help in that regard, the Green Fuse line continues to expand its lineup in 2016. Compatible Mixes are coming in with strong demand and First Light Perennials are making their compatible debut! Mixed perennial containers at retail will surely be a hit! So if you’re looking for a distinctive line of annuals or perennials, look no further. Michell's has you covered with Green Fuse genetics. Our C.L.I. Colors program continues to grow. Customers are experiencing consistently high quality of Suntory Mandevilla in various forms. C.L.I. produces excellent Hibiscus, Oleander and a wide range of foliage and fern. Michell’s is proud to offer you this special compliment for your Mother’s Day lineup with C.L.I. Colors. From the west coast to the east coast, Michell’s can offer you material from the finest nurseries in the country. We offer a wide selection of liners, container grown and field dug B&B woody ornamentals and trees. In 1959 Michell’s shipped their first semi-load of west coast grown nursery stock to the east coast. Today, most of the material is going by rail in order to save on freight costs and to insure a smoother ride. Go to our website to see many of our linked nursery venders with inventory updated daily. Michell’s is on a mission to deliver you the finest quality material coupled with the finest service. We appreciate your business and look forward to serving your needs in the coming year. Best regards for a successful 2016. Sincerely,
Henry F Michell 4th President & CEO

Michell’s is founded by Henry F. Michell I, 125 years ago, a first generation immigrant to the United States from Switzerland. The first location is at 1018 Market Street in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Henry’s brother Frederick joins the company, in addition to two other employees. This team is the first group of dedicated employees to represent Michell’s.
The first expansion of the company. Michell’s moves down the road to 518 Market Street, which is a five story factory with seven different departments.
Growing the future of the company, Michell’s buys, “Tower Hall”, a building that gives additional room for growth.
With the addition of sales to the wholesale market, Michell’s becomes the very first brokerage company in the horticulture industry.

With the city focusing on public space, The Henry F. Michell building is purchased to make space for Independence Park. The new store front is on the corner of 3rd and Spruce Street in Philadelphia.
3rd generation Michell family members take the reigns of the company. Frank B. Michell Jr. and Henry F. Michell 3rd decide to focus the company solely in the Wholesale market.
Michell’s relocates to the Philadelphia suburbs in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania; where the office currently resides today.
The 100 year anniversary of the company is used as a time to give back to a nation that gave so much. The “Blooming of America” campaign is born and a percentage of sales are donated to The National Conservancy in Arlington, Virginia.
125 years later Henry F. Michell the 4th, or Rick as he’s known to his family and friends, heads up a dedicated sales team and staff. A family tradition of friendly, dedicated service still embodies the way in which Rick and his employees work today.
OUR PROUD HISTORY Over 100 years ago, Henry F. Michell started the company that still bears his name, with a love of horticulture and a commitment to providing excellent seed. Born in Switzerland, Henry and his brother, Frederick J. Michell, came to the United States in 1870. As a young man, Henry began working with the Henry A. Dreer Co., a large horticultural establishment in Philadelphia. Not content to watch the business he loved from the sidelines, Henry formed his own seed company in 1890 at the age of 30. He started the company business in the small, dusty attic of a building on Philadelphia's Market Street. His first sale was an order for two ounces of flower seeds. Though the total was only $1.50, it amounted to quite a celebration for the young entrepreneur. Two years later, his brother, Frederick joined him in the business. The two Henry F. Michell partners and two employees made up the first staff. As president of the company, the industrious, civic-minded Henry spent most of his time taking care of business at home, while vicepresident Frederick traveled the country servicing clients and developing new business. It was a successful combination. Michell’s rented and renovated an entire two and a half-story building and then added on to it several times. By 1900, it was a bustling five-story facility with seven product departments. A separate fourstory warehouse was just down the street. As the young company needed more room, Michell's bought and renovated the "Tower Hall" in 1908. The building was just five blocks from the first location. Until 1920, the growth at Michell's had resulted strictly from retail trade. The store filled orders for bulbs, and flower and grass seed from all over the US and the world. Later in the decade, however, Michell's expanded into the wholesale market, selling to greenhouses as well as private individuals. Michell's was the first company to sell nursery plant material to garden centers and nurseries on a brokerage basis. By the mid-1950's, the grandsons of Frederick, Henry F. Michell 3rd and Frank B. Michell, Jr., had become the company leaders. Because the wholesale focus had been so successful, they decided to leave retail sales entirely. Henry and Frank decided to focus on the company's growth in the greenhouse and nursery industries. With the emphasis on serving commercial growers, Michell's was able to streamline their business and offer very competitive pricing. They also relocated the company headquarters to the Philadelphia suburb of King of Prussia. As they celebrated 100 years of service to the horticultural business in 1990, the Michell Company decided to give back with a special campaign called the "Blooming of America" celebration. They committed part of all their sales to The Nature Conservancy in Arlington, VA. This reiterated their respect for the environment. The company continues to emphasize service to growers. This allows Michell's to become one of the leading suppliers not only of flower seed, but nursery stock, blooming plants, plugs, foliage and growing media. To expand their service to commercial growers, Michell's has committed its focus to developing both an outstanding product line and an excellent delivery system. One of the ways they have made growers' lives easier is to incorporate a regional customer service program. A grower only needs to talk to one customer service representative to resolve any questions. The sales and office staff also make it easier for growers to keep on top of industry trends by visiting trade shows, suppliers, seminars and meetings. They bring back the highlights of this information to the busy growers. Henry F. Michell IV (Rick), heads the company as President and CEO. Robert J. Steinlage serves as Vice President. Together, they spearhead the effort to further streamline service and delivery for the customer. They are renewing their focus on product procurement as well. Michell’s not only remains on the cutting edge of the horticultural industry, they define that edge. Henry F. Michell 4th

This broad-leaved cordyline is known for its bright splashes of neon pink. Most impressive in containers planted with two or more stems per pot, with the best color developing in plants exposed to full sun. Stunning in planters or in the landscape all summer long until frost, and may also be brought inside as a house plant.
This ornamental topiary is characterized by its small, green leaves and delicate branches. Eugenia is a resilient shrub that is easily trimmed to retain the desired form, and grows best in full sun. Performs best when kept moist.
24 Michell’s 2016
A uniquely colorful and durable plant, Petra’s glossy, multi-colored foliage starts out bright green with yellow veins, gradually transitioning through shades of coral, orange and copper, to a dark maroon with red veins. Thrives in summer heat. May be overwintered indoors if kept in a warm, bright spot and watered sparingly.
The Boston Fern is prized for its long arching fronds that cascade gracefully as the plant matures. This classic favorite requires bright indirect light and high humidity to flourish, especially indoors, and is ideal for outdoor shaded areas during the summer months in planters, urns and hanging baskets.
Foliage
Its long vines and big flowers that bloom throughout the summer and into the fall distinguish Dipladenia. Suitable for outdoors, it requires full sun and moist soil. As an added benefit, this plant will attract butterflies and hummingbirds.
Distinguished by its regal, upright form, dark green fronds and bushy habit, Kimberly Queen performs best in bright, indirect sunlight but tolerates more direct sun than a Boston fern. Ideal in large urns at entryways, on the patio, or in any partly shaded outdoor space given ample moisture through the hot summer months.

GERANIUMS 2016
D端mmen Orange
Speedling
Syngenta
Dümmen Orange Dümmen Orange is now home to Ecke Ranch™, Fides, Oglevee Geranium, Oro and Red Fox genetics. Dümmen has built an international reputation during its forty year history as a grower and producer of quality young plants. This results in a greater responsibility to provide excellent products, one that Dümmen cultivates carefully within its company culture. Dümmen Orange is responsible for such well known series as Candy, Dancing Idols, Global, Grand Idols, Great Balls of Fire, Master Idols, Mini Cascades, Patriots, Savannah, Summer Idols and Survivor. These varieties and more are also available through the following independent vendors: Botany Lane, Duwayne's Greenhouse, Mast Young Greenhouse, Pell Greenhouse and Welby.
Speedling Speedling, located in Sun City, Florida, has invested over 25 years of extensive research and development to insure uniform finishing. Typical finish time for Speedling Geraniums is 4-5 weeks which is great for northern growers who want to produce a seed Geranium crop. These varieties allow them to open their greenhouses later in the season which helps conserve energy. Plants ship with visible buds in the center and uniform flowering between colors allows for crops to be bench run; also shipped in pull 'n' pack boxes to reduce freight cost.
Syngenta Built on a deep understanding of geranium genetics and a passion to innovate, Syngenta Flowers has been a leader in vegetative geranium breeding for nearly 30 years. From Syngenta's rich history, including Fischer and Goldsmith heritage, Syngenta has built a strong record of delivering best-in-class varieties to the marketplace - from the introduction of the original Tango™ in 1986 to the more recent breakthrough of Calliope® Dark Red. Since the beginning, Syngenta has been driven to breed game-changing geraniums. When the Americana® series burst onto the scene, it made a big impression with its manageable habit and robust garden performance. Note: Growing medium should be sterile, well-drained, low in fertility and constantly moist. Transplant 15-21 days after sowing. If grown for mature plants to be sold in the fall-a difficult time for pansies, shade and misting can keep plants cool. Keeping soil on the dry side and a low phosphorus charge will reduce stretching.
