2019 Outlook By: Bart Hayes Spring 2019 is just around the corner and the outlook is very positive. Breeders have been working overtime developing new varieties and continue to break new ground on colors, patterns, and market position. After California Spring Trials, Cultivate, week 24 European Trials, and all of the University trial visits, although this is an overview and does not include all of the awesome new products, a clear image of what products are going to be “must haves” for this coming spring.

Dummen Orange’s

new, industry changing technology called Basewell™ has been garnering a lot of conversation. This technology allows growers to bring rooted cuttings into their greenhouse directly from Dummen Orange’s off-shore production facilities, saving time in production, and labor in propagation. However, just because Dummen Orange has spent time developing this new technology, it does not mean that they have reduced their focus on breeding new varieties. Dozens of improvements and new introductions this year, especially in Begonias with the new Portofino™ series and in Petunias with the new Surprise Star colors.

TECH TREND BLUELAB: CHECKING YOUR FERTILIZER INJECTOR “Nothing is more frustrating than putting the time and effort into feeding, only to have a bad injector or math mistake keep you from feeding at the right amounts.” Before you begin each season, be sure to use your EC meter to check the functionality of your fertilizer injector. Then, each time you mix fertilizer, be sure to check the EC of your feed water to ensure the setting on your injector is correct (as stated on your fertilizer label) and continuing to function properly. Nothing is more frustrating than putting the time and effort into feeding, only to have a bad injector or math mistake keep you from feeding at the right amounts.

MONITORING YOUR FERTILITY By: Bart Hayes

One of the most basic functions of greenhouse growing can be very easily overlooked: monitoring and maintaining fertility. It is easy to get into a “fertilizer rut” by continuing to do the same thing that has always been done, but keeping your crops properly fed is critical for producing the high-quality plant material your customers expect. Every crop is different and, as a grower, you have a wide range of options based on how you produce your crops, so assuming we understand the basics of fertility and a fertility regimen is in place, we can discuss the measurement and monitoring of fertility. Making it an easy, regularly performed task by anyone in the greenhouse.

1

: DETERMINING YOUR DESIRED FERTILITY This can be consistent across the board or you can refine it to a specific crop. Regardless of your approach, you need to choose a fertilizer that provides the proper fertility for your needs, based on a recent water sample, at the appropriate rates. Mixing instructions for various rates will be listed on the fertilizer label.

2

: PROPER MIXING All high-grade, professional fertilizer mixes currently on the market will include a table like the one shown in Table 1. It will tell you how many ounces of fertilizer per gallon to mix to achieve the parts per million of nitrogen you want coming out of the end of your hose. If you are using a fertilizer injector, it should also show you the increased rates for injecting at those ratios. Good water movement and blending will help to completely dissolve the fertilizer into solution. If it has been sitting, you may need to agitate to bring any precipitated fertilizer back into solution.

3

: CHECKING YOUR INJECTOR Good mixing is key, but ensuring your injector is properly functioning on a regular basis ensures that you are delivering the prescribed levels of fertility. It super easy and should be done at least as often as you mix fertilizer. Using a device that measures the electrical conductivity, or EC, run a quick test of your clear water used to mix fertilizer, turn on the injector, then test what comes out of the end of the hose. The difference between the two is the fertility that you are providing. You can compare this number to the number listed on the bag (Table 1) to see how close you are to your target fertility, and you can adjust based on this.

4

: CHECKING YOUR SOIL FERTILITY This is the most challenging of the monitoring steps, but not difficult. There are several methods to testing soil pH and EC, but I prefer the 2:1 method, but the pour through method is very effective without having to disturb the plants. Both are championed by Dr. Brian Whipker from NCSU, and I recommend trying both to see what fits your operation best.

Basically, Your EC shows you the concentration of your fertility, the pH dictates how much of it can get to your plants. The chart (Table 2) gives an indication of fertility levels in typical greenhouse soil. The soil pH is critical to the “availability” of the various nutrients and elements in the fertilizer for the plants to use. Some are more available at lower pH levels (Iron and Manganese, specifically) and some are more available at higher pH levels. A slightly acidic soil, around 6.2 to 6.5 is best for most greenhouse crops fertility, but specific crops have different needs, so be aware. It is also important to remember, pH is a logarithmic scale, so the difference between a pH reading of 7 compared to a reading of 6 is ten times more alkaline. A reading of 8 is one hundred times more alkaline than a reading of 6, and so on. Bearing this in mind, the decimal points in a pH reading matter, so don’t ignore when they start to creep up or down.

Just as important as hoses and thermostats in a greenhouse, pH and EC measuring devices for monitoring your soil fertility by keeping track of your soil EC and pH does not have to be a difficult task. By making it part of your typical growing routine, you can be better informed on what is happening below the soil line, and keeping your plants healthy makes them easier, and more cost effective, to produce.

TECH TREND DÜMMEN ORANGE: SUNSTANDING REORGANIZATION In a continuing effort to make their products easier to produce, Dummen Orange has split their hybrid Impatiens series, Sunstanding™, into two sub series based on vigor. The Apollo sub series showcases big vigorous plants in a pallet of 9 colors. All the Sunstanding™ Impatiens are available as a traditional unrooted cutting, rooted cutting from one of Dummen Orange’s licensed propagators, and as a QT (Quick Turn) unrooted cutting. The QT unrooted cutting is ideal for rapid production (5-7 weeks) and early flowering, especially for smaller pots like direct stick 306 packs and 4” pots.

TECH TREND DÜMMEN ORANGE: BASEWELL TECHNOLOGY “It is hard to overstate how significant a development [Basewell] could become.” Dümmen Orange has been doing intensive research into new product forms for growers and has come out with a new, industry changing technology called Basewell™ (See photo 5). This technology allows growers to bring rooted cuttings into their greenhouse directly from Dümmen Orange’s off-shore production facilities, saving time in production, and labor in propagation. It is hard to overstate how significant a development this could become. Many growers struggle to find the time and space to propagate plants from unrooted cuttings, this new technology is likely to not only reduce labor, but crop time as well, resulting in savings. Customers Want the Scent Back in Roses! By: Lorie Farr

k Welcome Brindabella Roses™ k

Do you offer any roses that are actually

fragrant?

More and more when talking with customers I am hearing, “Do you offer any roses that are actually fragrant?”. My answer was always hybrid tea roses. Those words alone, hybrid tea roses, was enough to steer the conversation away from roses. The answer has now changed, and I am able to talk with my customer about growing or offering FINISHED Brindabella Roses.

Brindabella Roses offer the consumer a shrub type rose with beautiful fragrant double blooms (nice and fluffy), fantastic disease resistant, and seven gorgeous colors to choose from.

Repeat blooming and low-maintenance, Brindabella Roses will grow to top out at 4 feet tall and wide. Shrub size, heavy fragrance, high disease resistance, repeat blooming and no need for deadheading make this rose a top choice for commercial landscapes or the home gardener. Offered in (72) or (21) cell liners, growing these roses alongside any perennial program is ideal and will finish in a gallon container in 14 to 20 weeks and a 3 gallon container in 26 to 30 weeks. TECH TIP

IMPATIENS IMARA: DOWNEY MILDEW RESISTANT Impatiens walleriana was the most popular bedding plant in the world until a disease, Downey Mildew of Impatiens, spread like wildfire through Europe and the US. Although it has seen a resurgence in parts of the world where the disease is less virulent, the industry has been waiting on a breeding solution to this issue. Syngenta Flowers announced that, through selections made from their existing breeding for resistance and aggressive, traditional breeding methods, they have been successful in developing a series of Impatiens walleriana that are resistant to Downey Mildew on Impatiens. Europe has a full roll out this season, with North America to follow for spring 2020. However, remember that resistance is not the same as “immunity” or disease free. Resistant strains will still be infected with the disease, but will show an enhanced performance and survivability following infection. This is a huge step forward, but as the first generation, there is more work to be done to bring Impatiens back to their former position in our industry.
