Growing your business from the ground up since 1890

July 2016 Dear Valued Customer, I visited California for the spring trials earlier this year to find a great deal of conversation centering on Millennials, a group born between 1980 and 2000. The big concern with this group is their lack of knowledge about our products. Many have no idea what a flat is or what to do with it. On a brighter note, some statistics indicate that a good percentage own a home and enjoy gardening as a hobby. One retailer I spoke with indicated that the initial time spent to educate, makes for a very loyal customer in the end. The breeders on display in California are not resting on their laurels. Many exciting new additions will be luring the attention of this Millennial group for years to come. From Syngenta, we have the Calliope interspecific Geraniums that come in two size classes, large and medium. Calliope Large is designed for vigorous performance in the garden and larger containers. Calliope Medium provides a controlled growth for a wide range of pot sizes. From PanAmerican Seed, you can build a better combination planter with Fuseables - a breakthrough in seed technology. From their revolutionary precision multi-pellets that are easy to sow and easy to grow; three plants per pellet are evenly matched for a uniform finish! From Dßmmen Orange, we have the new Suntunia series for 2017. This series is perfectly matched in vigor and habit. As the name implies, Suntunias are more heat and sun tolerant than traditional petunias. They are great for baskets or out in the landscape! From Sakata Seed America, we have the new Majorette Gerbera Series, which comes from a breeder who really knows Gerbera. The Majorettes have improved uniformity on compact plants that produce flowers measuring 3-4 inches across. The seeds are coated with a slick coat making perfect for today’s seeding machines. Gaining customer insights has become increasingly more important to the horticultural industry. Obtaining general information on customers as a whole, as well as regional and market-specific information, is vital to designing programs best suited for a particular area. Retail Tracker can help achieve this by allowing you to create surveys by region and retail banner, providing these segmented results. Performing quick customer surveys to gather consolidated data can be done in seconds. This invaluable tool provides an in-depth understanding about your customers, facilitating better decision-making in the retail setting. To learn more about Retail Tracker visit our website and click on: www.RetailTracker.com. Have a very successful 2017 and thank you for the business you entrust with Michell’s. Sincerely,

Henry F Michell 4th President & CEO

Amiko White is the fourth color in the Amiko family, introduced in 2016. It is an excellent choice for late September sales as a solid white or in combination with other Amiko varieties. Amiko will flower later in the South and its large decorative flowers will last well into November. Bronze  Violet  White  Yellow

Jasoda offers great color combinations and is a great season extender with five colors. They all flower on the same day and are designed to perform as well inside as outside, which makes them perfect for early crop production under black cloth. Natural season flowering is early October in the North, mid October in the South.

Miora Orange – for mid September sales, vibrant decorative orange variety with darker centers. Lower vigor makes it more suitable for gallon, 8” containers and hanging baskets. It works well under black cloth with a 6.5 week response time. Miora has perfect round shape and great flexibility. Introduced in 2016.

Staviski mixed color combos. Excellent choice for early October flowering under natural days, as well as for black cloth production. All color mixes are very uniform and will flower on the same day. Staviski family offers vivid, long lasting colors with unmatched flexibility and perfect round growth habit.
