Mad for Menswear Don Draper isn’t the only man that looks good in a suit. We used the dapper menswear of Mad Men to inspire the look for our first Men’s Issue cover. The guys donned suits and ties to embrace the character of powerful New York City ad men, and we added a gorgeous lady for good measure.

Dear Readers, the world of men’s clothing and we learned everything we could from the men of HFS. We held our first Men’s Fashion Summit, read up on our GQ, and got to work. The staff explored many male closets, became obsessed with snapbacks, and developed a genuine love of beards (the scruffier, the better). The staff and I have been through countless late nights, edited numerous lines of copy, distributed (and redistributed) call sheets, crafted inspiration boards, booked studios, styled models, and obsessively stalked well-dressed students on campus all in the name of HFS. I’ve loved every minute of it, and it’s all thanks to our team. As I move on, I know that my staff of fashionistas will work hard to continue to push buttons, and create beautiful content. Style is subjective. It’s based on individual decisions on what to wear, and what not to wear. In men’s fashion, the choices seem to be even more simplistic. Pants, shirt, shoes, jacket, or some combination of these parts. But when you really search you can find the adventure in style; the pieces that turn an averagely dressed boy into a well-dressed man. One of those pieces is a bow tie.

he bow tie is a type of men’s necktie that originated in the 17th century. Most traditionally, it has been associated with black tie affairs and stuffy professions like attorneys and professors. We’ve found that

When in doubt, black is always the classic and elegant choice. 26

Who is your style icon? My style icon would have to be Michael Bastian. In 2011 Michael Bastian was named the CFDA Menswear Designer of the year. His style is classic and well structured. Before he was designing he was in charge of menswear direction at Bergdorf Goodman and was the best in his field. As much as a style icon he is to me he is also someone’s career path and lifestyle that I follow. True visionary and great leader in the industry. What one wardrobe item can’t you live without? I can’t live without my chambray shirt. I am not sure why but it is that one item that I absolutely love and can’t live without. It is so versatile and has a nice clean look to it. My favorite way to wear it is as a weekend shirt that I can just throw on, roll-up the sleeves, and head out. What’s your style obsession? I don’t have multiples of one specific item but I may have 30 button downs. There is never such a thing as too many button downs. Too many options! You have plaid, gingham, solid, linen, chambray, light cotton, oxfords. It goes on and on and is wonderful

each time, I get a new one. The button down is my t-shirt. The times I wear t-shirts is probably once every 3 months and it is usually under a blazer. A button down can be formal or casual and really adds a nice touch to any outfit. It is also something that helps clean out one’s look What’s your favorite accessory? Favorite accessory is my leather and gold Fossil watch that I usually wear with my leather braided Pandora bracelet. It’s Tuesday morning. What are you wearing? It’s a Tuesday morning I will be probably wearing dark jeans, my favorite pair of Clarks desert boots, and a cream and black horizontal crew neck stripped sweater. With a button down under and my navy blue pea coat. What trend makes you cringe? I would never, ever wear a turtle neck. I would feel completely suffocated and feel that they will never come back in mens fashion. Where are your favorite places to shop? My favorite places to shop are J.Crew, Gap, H&M, Aldo, Macy’s, and Marshalls.

Who is your style icon? My style icon would have to be Ryan Gosling just because every time someone snaps a picture of him, his style just seems so effortless. Whether he’s in jeans, a graphic T and motorcycle boots or a blue Burberry suit, Ryan always stays true to his personal style and looks amazing do so. What one wardrobe item can’t you live without? Well I have this one old chambray button up thats from the Gap. It was my step-dads from the late 90s and its now this like acid washed out blue color this is just so awesome. Plus I can wear it whenever wear ever: whether its was black jeans or a pair of skinny chinos, the shirt always looks good on me and its so comfortable. Do you have any multiples in your closet? What and why? If you know me then you know my favorite store is The Gap and right now I’m obsessed with their new Oxfords and the Slim Lived-In chinos. I have about four of the new oxford button ups and about three pairs of the lived-in chinos. The Gap is the best place to go for very versatile clothing and clothing that makes you look and feel good.

What’s your favorite accessory? My favorite accessories are my two pairs of Ray Bans. i have a pair of Original Wayfarers that are tortoise print and then a pair of Extra Large gold rimmed black lens aviators. I got the Original Wayfarers as a gift from someone who means the world to me and the second pari I bought on my own as a job well done gift. Sometimes you need some of those! It’s Tuesday morning. What are you wearing? You would probably catch me in something a little more dressed up: maybe a pair of slim or skinny chinos with a button down shift, maybe a sweater or cardigan to go over that. I work most Tuesdays and have class early in the morning so I usually don’t have time in between class and work so I go to class all dressed up. What trend makes you cringe? CROCS WILL NEVER BE A THING AND SHOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN A THING! Where are your favorite places to shop? My favorite places to shop are The Gap, Topman, Urban, H&M, Jack Threads, and Zara

Gone are the days of classic, French Riviera-esque stripes; instead, try these new stripes that

GHT FIT

Dressing well doesn’t have to be a chore. We get it, you have classes, friends, extracurriculars, and a whole host of other things on your plate. The outfit you’re wearing to class? Probably not at the top of the priority list. But never fear, HFS has your back. We’ve compiled a list of closet essentials, things every guy (no matter his sense of style, or lack thereof) should have in his closet. Learn the secrets to dressing for success so you can assemble the best wardrobe, with the right fit.

The Oxford

THE RULES A simple button-down shirt should be a staple in your wardrobe. Tucked or un-tucked they are easy to dress up or dress down and make any outfit look clean and sleek. The shirt should be fit close to the body, but not so tight that it ripples on your arms. Add one white, chambray, and a striped shirt like AJ’s to your repertoire. Don’t be afraid to try out bright color and patterns too!

Suit, Thrifted; Shirt, Stafford; Tie, Robert Talbott; Shoes, Clarks; Watch, Nixon

The Cardigan

THE RULES While some guys are somewhat apprehensive of cardigans, we sing their praises. While we do advise you stray away from any sweater that makes you look like Mr. Rogers, there’s something amazing about the fit and shape of the right cardigan. Whether it’s lightweight or thicker, a cardigan can add an easy sense of style to an outfit. Throw it over a t-shirt and wear it to school, or over a button-down and tie and wear it in a business setting. We advise investing in good v-neck like the one shown here, and one with a shawl collar a la James Dean suits cira 1950. Playing with fabrics and colors, and a cardigan is a must.

Shirt, Gap; Tie, BDG; Cordoroys, Levi; Belt, Maurice’s; Shoes, McAllister; Cardigan, Charles & 1/2, Watch, Wenger

The Jeans

THE RULES This is a no-brainer. Every guy has at least one pair of jeans, but we want to emphasize the importance of fit. If your pants are sagging around your butt, they do not fit. A belt is your friend. Jean does stretch so buy your denim one size up. Finding the right jean is sort of a Goldilocks affair, not to big, not too small, somewhere in the middle is just right! We advise simplicity, dark wash, and a slim or tapered leg.

Jeans, Levi’s; Shirt, Anderson Little; Shoes, Clarks; Glasses, Warby Parker; Belt, Express

The Blazer

THE RULES Every guy, regardless of age or profession should have one amazing suit in his wardrobe. Trust us, you look your best in a suit. Fit is everything. Spend the extra bucks on a tailor that can make sure you have the perfect look. A suit should fit your shoulders regardless of shoulder pads. You should be able to button the jacket without straining. Length wise, the sleeves of your suit should at least skim your watch on your

Striped Sock Set Forever 21 $5

56

On a recent trip through London’s Heathrow Airport, I became aware of a businessman who sat reading the paper in his suit. The suit itself was nothing of significance, but what caught my eye was the bright yellow striped sock that showed through in between the hem of his pants and his brightly polished shoe. I was struck by the influence that pop of colour had on the whole outfit. You can be wearing the dullest of suits, but with a bold pattern or bright colour on your socks your look can be transformed. Many brands are hopping on the trend, with websites like www.sockittome.com and skate brands like HUF creating their own risqué patterned socks. Rob Kardashian even tried his hand at designing with his brand of kooky socks. On the subject, Kardashian stated, “I feel like everybody likes a dress sock. No one wants to see a boring tube sock. I am very passionate about it and I think guys and girls agree with me.” Take a look at some of the best, but be warned, these are not for the faint hearted! • Cecilia Betsill

BeardsonBeards

In delving into the mysterious world of men’s facial hair, we asked ourselves one essential question— are we pro beard? After much discussion with the Men of HFS and the men on campus at IC, we decided that when done right and groomed properly beards can be pretty fantastic. They are distinguished, manly, and even a little sexy. As an HFS first, we reached out to the beard community on campus at IC for this editorial shoot and had an overwhelming response of proudly bearded men. We found scruff, fuzz, five-o-clock shadows, and stubble galore. Check out some of our favorite beards and learn more about how to maintain your own. It’s all about beards on beards.

The

Bearded Truth

HFS and IC men give us their take on beards. “It’s always a good idea to restart your beard every now and then. Just shave it all off and start fresh. I do that at least every couple of months.”

Steven “Dudes gotta remember to shave that under beard too. Get your neck and all under there. Very important step, so you look fresh instead of like a bum.”

“Gillette Fusion razors are my personal favorite. They’re so smooth! But if I’m not shaving, I’m trimming any stray hairs with scissors.”

On the Power of the Beard “The ladies love the stubble. Some scruff on your face and you’re automatically a boss.”

Harris

“Beards are manly. Completely changes the way you look. If you can pull it off, go for it at least for a little while.”

Alex

“I trim mine once or twice a week, but I almost always have some sort of facial hair. Everyone always has an opinion on it, but I’m a big fan.”

Back to Basics

The new trend for males this spring: facial hair! Whether you’ve got a five O’clock shadow going, or a goatee, you are down with the trend. Facial hair has been seen all over the red carpet and now we are even seeing it here at IC. Some facial hair styles are more popular than others, and they even vary based on geographic location.

72

HFS Grooming

Our models were featuring a variety of facial hair trends, just like we saw on the red carpet. There's an equal division between longer and shorter facial hair amongst our models. Many of them are keeping their hair cut very similarly to the celebrities we've seen. One of our models has a look very similar to Leonardo DiCaprio, his facial hair is faintly visible and helps define his jaw. The other models with longer beards and mustaches look very e’ve even seen along his jaw. Put Your Best Face Forward

The key to a better shave and smoother skin

Before you shave:

Mind your grip:

Make sure you begin with a nice, clean, and moistrzed face. Use a smooth unscented modern-style cream to prep your face. Try This: Baxter of California Super Close Shave Formula ($16)

Get a firm hold on your razor. Look for a razor that pivots with the planes of your face for the best shave.

Don’t rush: Most guys see shaving as a chore. Take the time out to make long strokes, and get all of the hair you want off. Your face—and your look—will thank you.

After you shave: The post shave is just as important! Don’t put on aftershave immediately after, your pores are still open and you’ll cause major irritation. Wait a minute and let them close naturally. Try This: Sharps After-Shave ($16)
