OUR MISSION: To seek and inspire opportunities for positive impact, be an accessible resource, and elevate social dialogue around the built environment.

UNITING FOR THE GREATER GOOD HGA Community Action began in 2015 as a grassroots effort to enhance the social impact of our work across the country. By donating the firm’s time, talents, and resources in close collaboration with local organizations, HGA is creating positive change in our communities while providing opportunities to learn and grow as a team.

HANDS ON, FACE TO FACE In the project’s second year, 237 HGA employees from eight offices, representing all departments and levels of experience, stepped up to contribute more than 1800 hours of design, community engagement, and hands-on volunteering. This year’s projects ranged from pro bono design services for a business incubator to staffing a holiday toy drive.

DAY OF SERVICE

Through Day of Service projects, HGA offers employees opportunities to volunteer for local non-profits and community groups. Our goal is to elevate the firm’s culture of engagement and use service work as a way to learn about and explore the social impact of physical environments.

MENTORING

A new focus for 2016, Mentoring projects create connections across generations to foster the success of tomorrow’s architects, engineers, and citizens. These formal and informal relationships are a chance for everyone to grow and learn from each other, employees and mentees alike.

PRO BONO DESIGN

Pro Bono projects remove the barriers that often prevent organizations from accessing design services. HGA employees donate their time to local community organizations at all phases of the design process, giving professionals at HGA the chance to gain experience in various project roles.

COMMUNITY WORKSHOPS

Workshops unite local groups in need of architecture, engineering, design, or marketing services with teams of HGA professionals. Through day-long design charettes, we engage in face-to-face conversations about needs in our local communities while leveraging the breadth of services and resources HGA can provide.

LOS ANGELES

PRO BONO DESIGN SERVICES Venice Family Clinic PHOTOS 01-02 Venice Family Clinic is a free downtown clinic serving people with little or no access to healthcare. As part of our extensive partnership, we helped steer a major renovation of the clinic, from guiding the visioning process to helping secure funding to designing concepts for the exterior, entrance, lobby, and team spaces.

DAY OF SERVICE Venice Family Clinic Art Walk & Auction PHOTOS 03-05 The HGA team helped coordinate a full day of activities for the Venice Family Clinic’s annual fundraiser, which features food trucks, an art auction, live music, and studio tours. Our volunteers donated their time to making the event a lively experience and a financial success.

DAY OF SERVICE Venice Family Clinic Children’s Holiday Movie PHOTOS 06-07 For the Venice Family Clinic’s holiday fundraiser, HGA was on hand to coordinate lively activities directly with attendees.

Our irresistible “Glitter Tattoo Booth” staffed by HGA employees was a magnet for kids and adults alike, helping to raise more than $150,000 for the clinic’s ongoing operation.

MENTOR PROGRAM ACE Mentor Program of America PHOTOS 08-09 For the after-school ACE program (Architecture, Construction, and Engineering), HGA and other firms introduced local students to career opportunities in the field of design. As part of the program’s semester-long project to create an Olympic Village, HGA mentors guided students in the construction of athlete housing.

PRO BONO DESIGN SERVICES Teen Center Renovation: Mary Ryan Boys & Girls Club PHOTOS 10-13 HGA partnered with a Boys & Girls Club in an economically disadvantaged area of Milwaukee to make their space more attractive and useful to the kids they serve. Working hand-inhand with neighborhood teens, our team designed a vibrant new “Teen Center” that’s slated to finish construction in 2017.

21 PEOPLE 200 HOURS DONATED Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee’s mission is to inspire and empower all young people to realize their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens. To help ensure all youth have the opportunity to participate, the Clubs charge only a $5 membership fee and no one is turned away because they cannot pay. Regardless of their circumstances, there is a place at the Clubs for every kid.

PRO BONO DESIGN SERVICES West Broadway Public Plaza Demonstration Area Proposal PHOTOS 14-15 HGA partnered with artist Emily Stover and contractor Field Outdoor Spaces on a proposal for a new public plaza in North Minneapolis. Our concept for a flexible gathering place was designed to improve public access, decrease perception of crime, and enhance aesthetics along West Broadway Avenue.

COMMUNITY DESIGN WORKSHOP Local Design Charrettes PHOTOS 16-17 The HGA Minneapolis office provided short-term design services to four local organizations who we selected through an RFP process. Each group worked with a team of 5-6 HGA employees, coming together to explore their needs and co-create solutions during an intensive, eight-hour workshop.

COMMUNITY DESIGN WORKSHOP Activating the Alley PHOTO 18 HGA helped to re-envision a prominent alley in downtown Rochester in collaboration with key city stakeholders.

Our contributions included overall strategy, guidance on grants to fund the project, and design concepts that could support a safe, attractive, and business-friendly experience year-round.

At the annual “We Care” event, the design community comes together to support The Boys & Girls Clubs of America. In 2016, our team helped kids design holiday gifts for family and friends while enjoying abundant treats, games, and festivities. HGA joined 172 architects and designers to bring joy to 176 children.

DAY OF SERVICE Sacramento United (PARK)ing Day PHOTOS 21-23 At annual PARK(ing) Day events, artists and designers transform parking spots into temporary social spaces. HGA created one of 15 installations to re-imagine Sacramento’s streets. Our “Sacvivor” project offered free games under a tree-like canopy on a surface of unexpected materials.

SAN FRANCISCO MENTOR PROGRAM Journeyman International PHOTOS 24-25

In 2016, HGA sponsored Cal Poly student Kyle Rodgers to design a vitally needed community medical center in Torrington, Jamaica. With our design oversight and financial support, Rodgers is comprehensively solving an important problem with real-world impact.

DAY OF SERVICE San Francisco Firefighters Toy Program PHOTOS 26-27 To help make the San Francisco Firefighters Toy Program a success, HGA team members made donations of toys and cash, sorted gifts, and prepared customized packages of toys for families. Our efforts made the holiday a little brighter for local families in need.

PRO BONO DESIGN SERVICES Third Street Community Center Third Street is a non-profit community center providing after-school enrichment opportunities for neighborhood children. HGA is providing pro bono architectural services to update the group’s 2,000 square foot office space, including field verification, updated base drawings, space planning, and furniture and finish options.

WASHINGTON, DC PRO BONO DESIGN SERVICES 5 Points Business Center PHOTO 28

An innovative non-profit in D.C.’s Ward 5, 5 Points supports local small businesses through professional services, subsidized consulting, and shared office space. HGA contributed more than $12,000 in design services and 200 hours of in-kind services to help design the center, including spaces for co-working, meetings, and community events.

PRO BONO DESIGN SERVICES Warrior Canine Connection Project PHOTO 29 Founded in 2011, this life-changing program helps veterans suffering from PTSD and brain injuries to heal through the power of human-animal bonds. HGA is donating design services to develop a master campus plan for WCC in Boyds, Maryland, and convert a two-story dairy barn to house its operations.

I have found WCC to be extremely appreciative of all that we do for them, and I in turn appreciate them for all the work they do helping veterans.
