HGA is a national multi-disciplinary design firm rooted in architecture and engineering. We believe that the best design starts with deep insight into the people and passions that animate every built environment. Curiosity is the root of our creativity; inspired application of what we learn sets us apart. Founded in 1953 by Richard Hammel, Curt Green and Bruce Abrahamson, we have always embraced a collaborative, multi-disciplinary approach that uses deep understanding of our clients’ needs as a springboard for transformational solutions. The HGA design experience engages clients in a process that blends the right mix of diverse expertise, innovation and experience. The quest to uncover insight unique to each client leads us to use innovative research at both the macro- and micro-levels. Broad social trends and technological innovation are weighed beside sectorspecific challenges and the unique needs/culture of each organization. 4 | HGA

PLANNING
ENGINEERING
We believe planning is a vital element of developing successful projects, from the overall organization of the site, the creation of unique public spaces, and the unification of the building design with the surrounding context. We pay particular attention to site history, context, environment and surrounding natural features, patterns of usage and other factors.
HGA offers a full range of engineering services, including civil, electrical, mechanical, and structural engineering. Our engineering teams work with owners, contractors and architects to create comprehensive solutions that meet the needs of each project and that achieve operational, aesthetic and sustainability goals with responsive, cost-effective service.

THE CAMPUS EXPERIENCE The student community experience plays a major role in determining student satisfaction and retention. Positive experiences, like comfortable housing choices, unique amenities, engagement with campus, athletic events and entertainment, are significant contributors to a student’s sense of attachment to a university. HGA’s founders were passionate about architecture that inspires learning, stimulates creativity and strengthens communities. Great projects do all three. HGA designs for the “celebration of human life,” and the distinctive facilities that we design provide great benefit to institutions and students that also enrich the community and provide wonderful, holistic places to call home. SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY ENVIRONMENTS HGA’s experience exemplifies the understanding that research buildings must allow for flexibility for expansion and accommodation of evolving technologies and discoveries with facilities ready to support the next 100 years of advances. Spaces need to accommodate for various laboratory functions in an open, interactive environment that also provide privacy for individual researchers. At HGA, we strive for solutions that inspire breakthroughs, stimulate creativity and support interdisciplinary cooperation.
Research is a dynamic activity, and HGA has a broad and deep understanding of the need for advanced planning tools and techniques to ensure the longterm flexibility, adaptability and cost-effectiveness of any facility. For nearly fifty years, HGA has helped colleges and universities to build lasting and functional buildings.

SUCCESSFUL PLANNING
MINNESOTA STATE COLLEGES & UNIVERSITIES Guide for Campus Master Planning
The success of any campus is most apparent when people inhabit it together with joy, in a united and holistic way – not only buildings, roadways and open spaces, but also how they facilitate activities, create connection within and among communities, enhance well-being, curiosity, learning and bring beauty to daily life for residents and visitors alike. This kind of place-making for people is the focus of our work. Each college or university has a heart born of its unique context and sense of place. This authenticity is at the core of any master plan we make. While informed by a broad array of perspectives and expertise,, we seek collaboration with students, faculty, staff, stakeholders and community officials to maintain and enhance the inherent character and identity of project sites.
