aving come througha packed festive fixture schedule, the Scottish Premiership has really started to take shape. We find ourselves in third spot – two points clear of today’s visitors – and every remaining fixture feels significant.
H
It is no bad thing to have winger Martin Boyle on top of his game at this crucial stage – fresh from a goal and an assist in the midweek win at St Mirren. He is determined to play a big part in a strong finish to the campaign.
MARTIN, THE BOYS MUST BE IN GOOD SPIRITS AFTER BACK-TO-BACK WINS AWAY FROM HOME? I think this season’s shown that there’s not much between a lot of the teams. Everyone seems to be taking points from each other or going on a run of good results at some stage. We’ve had a few sore ones but, in the main, we’ve been consistent and that’s why we are where we are in the table. We were coming off the back of two defeats and that’s not easy to take because we hold ourselves

to high standards. So, I think everyone could see the character of the squad in two well-earned wins at Dundee United and then St Mirren. It goes out the window for Aberdeen coming, but we’re at least going into it with some confidence in what we’re capable of. ST MIRREN WAS A POSITIVE ONE FOR YOU, IN PARTICULAR, BETWEEN YOUR GOAL AND ASSIST. TWO ASSISTS IF JAMIE MURPHY’S SHOT DOESN’T BOUNCE BACK OFF THE POST… I’ll let him off this time. Jamie’s great to play with. Because he’s so direct and technically good, he maybe draws defenders away from me and that leaves a bit more space to try and exploit. I obviously benefited from him being taken down for the penalty. I’m feeling good. I’ve been a bit further up the pitch in the last couple of games, but wherever the gaffer wants me to play I’ll do my best for the team. STATISTICALLY, YOU’VE BEEN THE MOST KICKED PLAYER IN THE LEAGUE THIS SEASON. HOW DOES THAT IMPACT ON YOUR GAME? I think as you get more experienced you learn how to protect yourself or try to ride the tackle so that you avoid the worst of the contact. We can call it an occupational hazard. You can’t let it impact on the way you play the game, and any wide player will say the same. You have to keep asking for the ball and taking risks in the final third, even if you think there’s a fair chance you’ll be clattered. You just hope the referees notice and help you out a bit! HOW DO YOU FEEL YOU’VE PROGRESSED? I saw Jamie say that he’d learned to beat himself up a little less and there’s something in that. He also said that when you’re a creative player there’s a fair chance a lot of what you try will not come off. That can be frustrating for everyone, but you need to keep taking those risks to try and cut teams open. I think over time your decision-making improves – shaped by all the situations you’ve been in. I’ve added more goals and assists to my game and I like to think I do my bit for the team defensively as well. You’re never the complete player and it’s 8

just a case of working to improve in every area. WE’VE AN ARRAY OF OPTIONS FROM MIDDLE TO FRONT, INCLUDING STEVIE BRADLEY FROM OUR ACADEMY. HE’S ANOTHER WHO LIKES TO RUN WITH THE BALL AND TRY TO MAKE SOMETHING HAPPEN. WHAT HAVE YOU MADE OF HIM SINCE HE STEPPED UP? Stevie’s worked really hard and made a good impression on the first-team group. I know the staff rate him highly and I’m sure he’ll get some more minutes between know and the end of the season. He’s got plenty of ability, he’s not shy – which I like – and he’s coming on all the time in training. I think the supporters will enjoy watching him play when he’s up and running. WHAT THREAT DO ABERDEEN POSE? We’ve got a lot of respect for Aberdeen, obviously. Year in, year out they’ve been right up there, and we’ve had some great games. I don’t think we’ve always got the results we’ve maybe deserved from some of our performances against them but it’s a game of fine margins. It’s a big game and we have enough in the dressing room to give them a lot to think about. It’s one we’ve been looking forward to. JACKSON IRVINE’S LIKELY TO BE AN INFLUENCE IN THE GAME IF HIS EARLY SHOWINGS ARE ANYTHING TO GO BY. YOU OBVIOUSLY KNOW HIM FROM THE AUSTRALIA SET-UP. HAVE YOU BEEN SURPRISED BY HOW QUICKLY HE’S SETTLED? Knowing him, not at all. He’s an open, personable guy and fitted in with the boys straight away. He’d gone a long time without playing so I think it’s testament to his fitness levels and work rate that he’s managed to hit the ground running as it would have been understandable if he’d taken a few weeks to get into his stride. I think there’s more to come from him. He has plenty of energy, dig and is a goal threat. He’s been a good addition and complements the rest of the players we have.

ABERDEEN
Though Aberdeen have found wins harder to come by of late, they have been the ‘best of the rest’ more often than not in recent years, which is testament to the character and ability within their squad. They will undoubtedly miss target-man Sam Cosgrove, who completed a move to Birmingham City late in the transfer window but his departure gives others an opportunity to step up and stake their claim. M A NAGER
DEREK MCINNES Our own Jack Ross is the first to compliment Derek McInnes whenever asked, with the pair enjoying a relationship that developed when Jack was making his way as a young manager at Alloa. McInnes has consistently built and rebuilt teams that seem ideally suited for the hustle and bustle of the Scottish game – with a strong core of dependable talent. He can also take a lot of credit for the development of Cosgrove, who was a bargain signing from Carlisle United and moved on for a reported £2 million.
C AP TA IN
JOE LEWIS Can you remember many, if any, howlers from the Aberdeen goalkeeper and captain? It’s a struggle and that says a lot in a position of fine margins. Lewis has been a consistently excellent performer for Aberdeen and is the rock that their rigid defence is built upon. He is particularly strong at claiming crosses, which Hibernian’s wide players will no doubt bear in mind come kick-off.
K E Y PL AY ER
LEWIS FERGUSON There are more than a few deserving of the title of ‘Key Player’ at Aberdeen but Scotland Under-21 midfielder Lewis Ferguson just edges it. The former Hamilton prospect is a great mix of craft and graft alongside Ross McCrorie in the engine room. He’s a player who will need to be shackled at Easter Road. 18

Aberdeen maintained their second-strongest start to a league season in 20 years with a comfortable win at Pittodrie, courtesy of early goals from Scott Wright and Sam Cosgrove. It was a rare off-day on the road for The Hibees, who dropped to fourth on the back of this result. A disappointed Jack Ross said afterwards: “It was nowhere near good enough. We gave away two ridiculously soft goals. We huffed and puffed after that but didn’t do nearly enough to trouble Joe Lewis in goal.”
