THE BIG INTERVIEW
KEVIN DABROWSKI
SPONSORED BY
vs MOTHERWELL | 27/04/21
tanding at almost six feet, five inches tall, goalkeeper Maciej ‘Kevin’ Dabrowski is one for Hibs supporters to keep a close eye on.
S
Kevin joined Hibernian’s Development Squad from the youth system at Polish side Lech Poznan back in 2017 and, despite suffering a freakish training ground injury that could so easily have derailed his Easter Road dreams, the 22-year-old has worked hard to put himself in the best possible position to one day realise his ambition of becoming first choice stopper for the Hibees.
Productive loan spells at Cowdenbeath in season 2019/20 and at Dumbarton last term have done him no harm at all, and a stand out Man of the Match performance in a Betfred Cup head-to-head with Hearts even earned him a round of applause from the visiting supporters. He even featured in an SPFL Team of the Week, which perhaps shows the huge potential he has in the game. Kevin is now fully focused on keeping fellow keepers Ofir Marciano and Matt Macey on their toes and is determined to seize whatever opportunity comes his way.

What does the future hold for you Kevin? I’m really happy here. I’ve already been at Hibs for four-and-ahalf years, almost five, and it feels very much like home. You had a very serious thumb injury when you first arrived which could have scuppered everything. Did you start to feel like it wasn’t meant to be? It happened before I even signed my contract, so I’m even more thankful to everyone at Hibernian for standing by me. Having that injury was really bad for me because I was a young boy coming to Scotland. It was a new environment, a new culture and my English wasn’t as good as it is now so I felt really lost when I got the injury. I had the option of going back to Poland and I could just go and leave it, give up, and use it as an excuse. But I said ‘No, I’m going to stay and show people what I can do’. Hibs were still keen to sign me and I said to myself that I was going to work my a** off and try to make it happen. I was about to sign a six month contract on loan when it happened, but I recovered and worked really hard to get the deal and I’m really happy I made it. Hibs fans may not have seen too much of you at this stage, but Dumbarton fans were gutted when you were recalled in January. Does that say a lot about how well you did there? “To be honest I didn’t expect that things would go so, so well at the beginning of my time at Dumbarton. “I’m very happy that I’ve kept up the high standard in every game, so I’m really happy that as a young goalkeeper I’m showing consistency.” What’s it like working with Ofir Marciano and Matt Macey on a day-to-day basis? It’s pretty good. It’s good fun and to be honest it’s good experience as well. These two guys are very experienced and have had good careers.

Ofir is obviously an international goalkeeper with Israel, and Matt was with Arsenal for a few years, one of the biggest clubs in the world. So it’s good to look at them, have an eye on them and take something from them. It’s also really good to listen to them because they are really keen to give something back to people coming through like myself. They give really good advice and that’s been really helpful for me.” Is there anyone else you look up to in your career? “Sometimes I watch some videos of Peter Schmeichel and clips of Poland’s holy goalie, Artur Boruc, who is my hero. He always did it perfectly. “I try to copy that as well as using my own style, and it seems like it works. I’m really happy that I have managed to make a couple of saves with this style. “I’m really confident but I don’t try to be too cocky. That confidence is really good, but you need to know the limit of it. If you are too confident then you can lose out, so I’m really happy that I know the limit of it – but at the same time know not to be cocky. “It’s all about details in football. Sometimes seconds can win you games.” Obviously there’s a lot of competition for that number one jersey. Do you think you can force your way into Jack Ross’ plans? Yes, it’s as simple as that really. I want to be first choice goalkeeper at Hibernian Football Club. I’ve just got to keep working hard and be ready to take my opportunity if and when it comes. There’s a great bunch of boys here and we’re having an amazing season so far. I want to play my part.

THE OPPOSITION
MOTHERWELL Motherwell stand between the Hibees and another Scottish Cup semi-final appearance at Hampden, and it’s a game the Steelmen will be well up for. Having successfully avoided the drop and playing out the rest of the league season in the bottom half, the Scottish Cup represents a huge opportunity for ‘Well to cap a difficult campaign off in style.
M A NAGER
GRAHAM ALEXANDER Graham Alexander became the 25th man to sit in the Fir Park hotseat in January when he succeeded Stephen Robinson, who called time on his own successful stint in the dugout. Alexander earned real respect in his playing days – not least for his 40 appearances in the dark blue of Scotland. A previous captain of both Preston North End and Burnley, he has earned his stripes on the touchline by taking charge of Fleetwood Town, Scunthorpe United and Salford City.
C AP TA IN
DECLAN GALLAGHER The Steelmen’s skipper has battled back from injury this season and managed to get 120 minutes under his belt in the win over Morton in the last round. A mainstay of Steve Clarke’s Scotland squad, Gallagher has made it no secret that he needs games to be part of Euro 2020 this summer. Gallagher took the Motherwell armband from Peter Hartley at the start of the season and hasn’t looked back, with his performances earning praise from home and opposition fans alike. His efforts have also attracted the interest of other clubs who will be keen to see what happens when his current contract runs out in the summer.
K E Y PL AY ER
TONY WATT Scotland cap Tony Watt has had 12 clubs in a colourful career but looks to have finally found a home at Fir Park. Watt has become something of a fan favourite for his all-action displays, and the feeling appears to be mutual as the striker has spoken publicly of his love for the club. He’s as happy as he’s ever been in the game since starting out as an in-demand prospect at Airdrie. He’ll no doubt be a handful for the Hibs defence if he starts this evening. 18

A 5-0 thrashing of Formantine United in the third round earned them a home tie against Greenock Morton in the fourth round, where the Championship opposition pushed them all the way. Graham Alexander’s men kept their cool to win through 5-3 on penalty kicks after the score was tied at 1-1 after extra time, and that secured a quarter-final trip to Easter Road. It’s been a happy hunting ground of late for ‘Well, as goals from Jordan Roberts and Devante Cole saw them run out 2-0 winners in the league in Edinburgh at the end of February. The two sides played out a 0-0 draw in their first encounter this season, while goals from Martin Boyle, Christian Doidge and Stephen McGinn rounded off a fine 3-0 win for the Hibees
