All of this before he turns 19 on Tuesday…..

Having come up through the youth ranks at derby rivals Hearts, the energetic left-back first signed with the Hibees in the summer of 2019 and, after a loan spell at Queen’s Park, was added to the first team squad ahead of the 2020/21 campaign. After making his first competitive appearance against Kilmarnock at the start of August, Josh hasn’t looked back and has been one of the first names on head coach Jack Ross’ teamsheet all season long.

What was going through your mind when you were called up to the first team at the start of the season?

A first senior goal in a 2-0 win over Hamilton in February was quickly followed by news of a contract extension through to 2025, and his impressive performances have also attracted interest from some of the biggest clubs in Europe. If that wasn’t enough, Josh was also named this season’s Scottish Football Writers’ Association Young Player of the Year – putting him alongside some esteemed company who have gone on to become household names – and he is looking forward to his first Scottish Cup final later this month.

I knew coming in I had to do something to impress. I had to come in with an energy and try and be fitter than everyone else, look like a mature player on the ball. I came in with that confidence and I think I reaped the rewards and never looked back. It’s been so fast and it feels like yesterday I was playing my first game against Kilmarnock. It’s like living a dream. I’ve enjoyed every second of it and it’s something I’ll never take for granted. Are there any players you’ve idolised or players you want to try and follow in their footsteps? Kieran Tierney was one. Whenever we used to play Celtic I always used to watch him. He was so young but he had an aggressiveness about him which was very inspiring. My dad always said to keep an

eye on him because he was going to go far, and what he’s doing now at Arsenal is mental. It’s someone you want to idolise. He’s had setbacks as well and I think he was told he was too small at one stage – I was the same, I got told I was too skinny and almost got released. Young left-backs in Scotland should be looking up to him because he is such a hard-working person and has that drive that you don’t really see much any more. I’m trying to follow his path as much as I can. I know I need to work hard to get anywhere near him, and week in week out he was getting assists and scoring goals, so he’s definitely someone to look up to. Obviously you’ve just been named the SFWA Young Player of the Year after being nominated alongside David Turnbull of Celtic, Lewis Ferguson of Aberdeen and Nathan Patterson of Rangers. How does that feel? I’m ecstatic about it. It’s the first ever award I’ve ever won and I’m absolutely delighted. It’s a proud moment for my family. It’s such a confidence boost for myself and to be even just put in a category with those players is massive for me. The players who have won it are all legends – Scott Brown, Steven Fletcher – and it’s absolutely brilliant. I’ll use it as a confidence boost and take it into the games coming up. Who keeps your feet on the ground? I know myself that I don’t take anything for granted. If I went out and didn’t perform, I wouldn’t get anywhere. My dad always congratulates me but he knows not to praise me too much – he’ll always slate me about things. Even if I’ve had a good game he’ll tell me what I’ve done wrong and he’s not afraid to hurt my feelings, put it that way. He’ll bring me down a peg. But Potts and the gaffer will always tell me what I could do better as well. They are so helpful and you can’t get on your high horse too much. I know myself I’m young and make mistakes, but it’s about tidying them up. It’s hard to get away from the fact that you’ve already been linked with some huge names – Manchester City, Leeds United, Leicester to name but a few. How does that sit with you? It’s crazy some of the teams who have been mentioned. What’s for me won’t go by me, and I know that. I just want to be playing football, whether it’s here or Barcelona, back at Queen’s Park, honestly I just want to be playing football, training and staying

away from injury. I adore it here at Hibs and the first season I’ve been treated so well by the club, the fans, the staff – it’s like no club I’ve ever experienced in my life. It’s so good here and I can only appreciate what they’ve done for me. I want to keep working hard for them. Hibs is a great pathway to go to other clubs, but Hibs are a massive club as well – we could finish third and we’ve got a massive chance to go and win a cup. We know that ourselves and there’s no better place than Hibs to develop as a player. Could you have envisaged standing where you are now 18 months ago? I remember my first time in training I was meant to go away with the 18s, and it was either playing for Queen’s Park or going to Portugal. I was looking at it as a free holiday and I wanted to get away, but I knew Queen’s Park was the better option. I remember at the first training session Ray McKinnon told my dad I would be starting at the weekend and the only option was for me to go to Queen’s. My first game was at Hampden against Cowdenbeath and I was absolutely terrified because it was my first proper professional game of football. I thought I was too small, I was very nervous, but I got on the pitch, got a few passes and I realised I could compete with men. From there I never looked back and I tried to work on myself as much as I could. I had trained with the first team at Hibs quite a bit, but I just went in with my head high, played the ball about and tried to look like I belonged there. I’ve tried to keep those standards and it’s been crazy for me really. It still doesn’t feel real. Finally, we’ve talked about all the milestones over the past year. How can you top this season? There’s always pressure on that. But we can’t think too far ahead. I’ll probably work on my shooting because that’s been awful but I want to work on that, on my crossing, having more energy and getting fitter. The gaffer spoke to me at the start of the season when I was getting 60 minutes in and I was absolutely blowing, but I played 105 minutes against Motherwell and while I was still blowing I definitely felt better and got much more minutes under my belt. So it’s about coming on as a player. I’m still developing and growing as a player.

JOHN KENNEDY Former player and coach John Kennedy was asked to assume the role of caretaker manager when Neil Lennon left, and was given the unenviable task of trying to steady the ship at Parkhead. Kennedy knows what it takes to win and was first-team coach under Ronny Deila and then Brendan Rodgers at the height of Celtic’s success in the past decade, going on to become assistant manager under Lennon. As a player, he was a formidable centre-back for both Celtic and Norwich and also earned a cap with Scotland, but after suffering a serious knee injury on his international debut in 2004 he was forced to retire in 2009 having failed to fully recover. It looks as though a new manager will be brought in this summer, so Kennedy’s future at the club remains far from certain.

SCOTT BROWN Scott Brown is bidding farewell to Celtic after 14 years with the club to take up a new role as a player/coach with Aberdeen. Broony of course needs no introduction to Hibs fans, with the influential midfielder starting his career at Easter Road and earning himself legendary status with the Hibees faithful. His £4.4m move to Celtic broke the transfer record between two Scottish clubs back in 2007, and he has helped to bring 10 titles, six League Cups and six Scottish Cups to the east end of Glasgow.The Scotland international has made more than 600 appearances for Celtic to put him alongside some of the club’s true greats, and supporters have loved his effort, drive, work ethic and will to win over the years. Described as ‘Captain, Leader, Legend’ by the club when it announced his departure, Brown’s shoes will be incredibly difficult – if nigh on impossible – to properly fill.

ODSONNE EDOUARD The 23-year-old striker played a pivotal part in helping Celtic secure the quadruple treble, signing on a permanent deal in 2018 after an impressive loan spell from Paris St Germain. However, after a disappointing season for the club, Edouard’s future is very much up in the air and it looks increasingly likely he’ll leave Glasgow this summer. The forward only has a year of his Parkhead contract to run and is understood to have made it clear he is keen on a move, with Leicester and Arsenal among the frontrunners for his signature. His goals will certainly be missed if that is the case, with the former France U21 international netting more than 60 times in all competitions over the years and averaging more than a goal every two games.

To say it’s been a season to forget for Celtic would be something of an understatement. A historic 10th consecutive league title – on the back of a historic quadruple treble - was the prize on the horizon at the start of 2020/21, but last month’s Scottish Cup exit at the hands of Rangers ensured the Hoops will have their first trophyless season for 11 years. A League Cup exit at home to Ross County, a disappointing Europa League exit to Sparta Prague and seeing their bitter Glasgow rivals wrap up the league with several weeks to spare have all rubbed salt in the wounds, and it promises to be a summer of change at Celtic Park with the very real prospect of a clearout on both the footballing and coaching side of things. Their fans will be hoping for some clarity as soon as possible over who will take over from Neil Lennon, who resigned in February after an Old Firm defeat left them 18 points adrift of top spot, while today’s game also sees the bittersweet final appearance for the club of stalwart Scott Brown.
