e’s the duellist, the warrior from Cyprus who revels in the heat of battle. He was the missing piece of the jigsaw at Easter Road. He’s Alex Gogic, and he is looking forward to another tough encounter with his old club, Hamilton Academicals.
H
The tough tackling, all action defensive midfielder has proved to be a huge hit since arriving at Hibernian, performing a role that had proved tough to fill before he arrived. And he’s loving it.
“I’ve loved every minute since I got here. Absolutely loving it from the first day I walked in. Winning games and sitting third in the league certainly helps, but there is a great bunch of boys here, we all get on and there is a good spirit.” Alex comes from a footballing family. His father, Sinisa, was a talented striker who played for a number of leading clubs, including Olympiacos, helping them to a double and scoring against Juventus in the latter rounds of the Champions League before

going into coaching at clubs including the Greek giants and also Red Star Belgrade. It was while they were in Greece that Alex joined Olympiacos youth set-up. “Yeah my dad has been a big influence on me I suppose. We’ve always talked about my game, how I am playing, what I am doing well and what I need to work on. I suppose it is the same for any father and son. He was a big player, a striker, and scored a lot of goals. A different type of player from me.” He has always been determined to be his own man, however, and was keen to play his trade in Britain. When the chance came, he jumped. In 2013 Alex joined Swansea City before his move to Scotland in 2017 when he joined Hamilton. In the season prior to his arrival at Hibernian, he was the midfielder who had won more of his personal duels on the pitch than anyone else in the country. He was delighted with the team’s performance in the game against Aberdeen, which ended in a 2-0 win for the Hibees. “That was a big win and a good performance. We all knew how important that game was, and we matched them physically.” That ability to compete physically is due in no small measure to the contribution made by Alex from his role anchoring the midfield. “I really enjoy playing that role. I know a lot of the work I do does not really get noticed that much, it’s maybe not so glamourous, but as long as my team-mates know and the gaffer knows, that is what is important to me.” Not that he’s not careful of moments of magic. His wonder strike against Kilmarnock at Easter Road may have had some blinking in disbelief. Alex laughed: “I’ve maybe hit a few like that in training, but I don’t think I’ve ever hit it sweeter in a game. I really enjoyed seeing it fly in. It was just a shame 8

there were no supporters in to see it and cheer it.” The goal was the first he’s scored with his foot, the others being headers, and his “baby” celebration was dedicated to his pregnant partner Chloe. The goal wasn’t his first at Easter Road, however. He scored with a header more than a year ago for Hamilton at Easter Road, but ended on the losing side that day. Today he is looking forward to tackling Hamilton again. He said: “It’s always good to catch up people there, and you always know it is going to be a tough game. Hamilton are renowned for their battling qualities. We saw that last game at Easter Road. They were 3-0 down, looked down and out, and then in the last part of the game scored twice and forced things right to the end. That was typical Hamilton. “But during the game at Hamilton we won quite comfortably. We were all at it that day, we worked hard and matched their effort, and our quality then came through. We need to make sure we are at it today, and if we are I am confident we can win the game and keep this run going.” Since his move to Hibs, “Goga” has won an international call-up for Cyprus after representing his country at under 19 and under 21 levels. His first call-up to the squad ended in a forced withdrawal when he tested positive for Covid 19, and was forced to self isolate even though further tests did not confirm the finding. He finally made his international debut in October last year, in a friendly match against the Czech Republic, and he is hungry for more: “I’d like to play any more games for my country. It was great to represent Cyprus, a very proud moment. I want to earn more caps, and to do that I have to keep playing well for Hibs.”

THE OPPOSITION
HAMILTON
Hamilton may sit at the foot of the table, but it would be a brave man who would bet on them staying there. The Club are renowned for their battling qualities, punching above their financial weight and defying pundits year after year to remain a top flight Club. As ever, we can expect a committed, determined performance from the Accies and a tough game.
M A NAGER
BRIAN RICE Brian is no stranger to Easter Road, serving the club as a player from 1980-85 when he made 84 appearances, scoring 11 goals before moving to Brian Clough’s Nottingham Forest side. He also worked as assistant manager to John Hughes at Hibs in 2009-10. He has committed to have his teams play an attractive, high energy and passing game.
C AP TA IN
BRIAN EASTON Hamilton’s on-field leader is an experienced and wily campaigner, defender Brian Easton. A Scottish Cup winner with St Johnstone, he has also played at Burnley and Dundee but since 2019 has been back at the club where he started his professional career in 2006, making more than 100 appearance during that first spell before moving south. Brian has been capped at under 21 and Scotland B level.
K E Y PL AY ER
BRUCE ANDERSON Striker Bruce Anderson is on loan to Accies from Aberdeen, and since signing in the January window has been a big contributor to the Hamilton cause. A player the club tried to sign twice before, the 22-year-old is an under 21 Scotland international he has already made an impact in the few games he has played for Hamilton. 18

Four different scorers in Boyle, Doidge, McGinn and Nisbet netted in a strong performance from Hibs at Hamilton. With more efforts on goal and the lion’s share of possession, the win was well deserved. But Jack Ross and his team will be wary of Accies. On their last visit to Easter Road, Accies were 3-0 down and appeared out after little more than an hour before a typical battling late rally saw them score twice and force Hibernian into a very nervy final few moments in a 3-2 home win.
