e may have been the subject of offers to take him away from Easter Road in January, but Ryan Porteous’ head has always been focused on the Hibees this season.
H
Whatever will be will be in the summer, but Porto’s professionalism has shone through in the last few months as he aims to help his beloved Hibs side secure third spot in the Premiership and also go on to lift the Scottish Cup at Hampden next month. Few will forget the scenes just a week ago when the 22-year-old’s winning penalty in the quarter-final against Motherwell sparked wild celebrations, although it’s back
to league business this weekend with a game against fellow semi-finalists St Johnstone just the latest in a hectic end to the season. For Porto personally, it’s been a memorable season as a whole so far, with a call-up to Steve Clarke’s Scotland squad just the icing on the cake. However, there’s still plenty more scope for further success over the coming weeks and months on all fronts – and maybe even a spot at the Euros. It’s been quite the 12 months for you with what’s happened with Hibs and Scotland? I think it’s been a great season.

My goal was to play consistently for 30-35 games and now I’ve hit that mark it’s a case of looking forward to the last few weeks of the season. There’s obviously been ups and downs, but I just want to keep going. There’s still three massive league games left – it’s been a good season and ultimately I’m happy with how things have gone. Over the course of the season I’ve performed relatively consistently and that’s been the main thing. We’re very close to securing third place and we’ve also got a massive opportunity to win silverware. But I’m concentrating on myself and trying to maintain a high level of performance. I think I’m maybe looking at one or two injuries before I’m considered for Scotland, and you’d be lying if you said you didn’t want to be part of the group for the Euros. All I can do is continue to perform and hopefully my name will be bandied around. Amid all the transfer speculation in January you were left out of the games against Dundee United and St Mirren. Was it a distraction? To be honest, my head was solely focused on the Dundee United game, but the manager made the decision and ultimately it was the right one. Daz (Darren McGregor) came in, strolled it, scored and the boys went on to win. It’s not just an 11-man squad throughout the season and everyone has played their part. I think I was taken out through certain circumstances that happened through the season, but now we’ve got five subs you can use then everybody has to be ready. Daz (Darren McGregor) came in and he was fantastic. He was looking back to his best and helped the team massively. When I was taken out of the team it gave me a chance to recover, let my body recover and look from the outside in, and I think it benefitted me. It made me more hungry to get back in the team and help the boys. Were you always confident you’d get back into the starting line-up? Not really because Daz was playing like prime Baresi at one 8

point! But I’ve obviously got confidence in my own ability and you can only hope to keep playing well and sneak back into the team. What’s it been like working with the gaffer this season? I’ve not really worked with someone who has as much trust in me. He’s always been very honest in terms of what he wants from me, and he’s shown massive faith in me. I can’t thank him enough. John Potter as well. He’s worked with me to make me the best I can be and work with the team to make them better. We’re looking at third spot in the league, another cup semi-final and European football next season. For a Hibee like yourself, it’s not normal is it? It’s a big achievement getting into Europe and getting third is something we’ve wanted to achieve for a while. But I think we should be aiming for that – the cup draws we’ve had this year, we should be getting to Hampden. We should be aiming for Hampden and cup finals every year. We’re a big club and we’ve got top quality players here who know what it takes to play at the highest level. We’ve got the structure and the ambition to do that sort of thing every year. We’ve got confidence we can do it – so we’ve got to show we can do it rather than just talking about it. With the way results have gone, the Scottish Cup has taken on added significance in terms of what it means for Europe next season. Is it a case of trying to right the wrongs of what happened in the last two cup semi-finals we’ve been involved in? The first time we went there against Hearts we performed really well and didn’t get the result we wanted, and we probably got what we deserved in the other semi-final. We know it’ll be a tough game and we know it will be a tough task. But we want to win a cup this year and we’ve shown that we’ve got the players and facilities to go and do that. We’ve already guaranteed European football and we want to go and win the cup to have something tangible at the end of the season. That would be great.

THE OPPOSITION
ST. JOHNSTONE St Johnstone visit Easter Road on a massive high after booking their spot in the Scottish Cup semi-finals at Rangers’ expense last weekend. After a very shaky start, it’s turned into an incredible season for the Saints and they will be dreaming of securing a historic cup double to cap it off. Hibs don’t need any reminder of how dangerous the Perth side can be on their day, and bitter memories of the 3-0 League Cup semi-final loss at Hampden in January won’t quickly be forgotten. M A NAGER
CALLUM DAVIDSON The former Blackburn, Leicester and Preston player took the reins in June 2020 and secured the League Cup in his first season in charge, also guiding Saints to yet another top six finish in the league and another Scottish Cup semi-final. Having made 19 appearances for his country, Davidson was always destined for a career in coaching once he hung up his boots – and stints as assistant manager at St Johnstone, as a member of the coaching staff at Stoke and Scotland, first team coach at Dunfermline, and assistant manager at Millwall have all added to a wealth of experience. The 44-year-old has already proved himself as a student of the game, and is now earning huge respect as a master of it.
C AP TA IN
JASON KERR It has been a fairytale season for Jason Kerr already, and he’s determined to guide his club to even more success. He has been a fixture with the Perth club since 2015 and quickly demonstrated his defensive talents by picking up a League Two winners’ medal while on loan with East Fife in the 2015/16 season. After racking up 80 appearances for East Fife over two seasons, he had a further loan spell with Queen of the South but returned to Saints to force his way into the team. With six appearances for his country at U21 level, few would bet against the 24-year-old being on Steve Clarke’s radar over the coming years.
K E Y PL AY ER
ZANDER CLARK Another player who has benefited from loan spells, goalkeeper Zander Clark pretty much secured legendary status among St Johnstone supporters with his performance alone at Ibrox last weekend. Clark’s flick-on from a corner in the 122nd minute was turned home by Chris Kane to take the Scottish Cup quarter-final to penalties, and the 28-year-old went on to deny both James Tavernier and Kemar Roofe during the shootout to book Saints’ semi-final spot at Rangers’ expense. His performances have not gone unnoticed in recent years and there were suggestions he could earn a call-up for Scotland in 2018/19, particularly after keeping five consecutive clean sheets.

In the league encounters between the sides this season, it’s been one win a-piece and a draw, with former Hibee Liam Craig scoring the winner in the last meeting on March 6 at McDiarmid Park. November’s game at Easter Road ended 2-2 after Paul McGinn twice pegged the Saints back after goals from Ali McCann and David Wotherspoon, while Hibs edged the opening game in Perth following a frantic finale which saw Stevie Mallan score a 91st minute penalty and Liam Craig sent off three minutes later.
