TRANSFER ROUND UP
T
oday’s signing of St Mirren captain Kyle Magennis completes our business for the transfer window.
The club is confident we have emerged from this period in a strong position, despite the well-documented uncertainties surrounding not only Scottish football but the wider world that we live in. Jack Ross and his squad have enjoyed an excellent start to the season – currently sitting third in the Premiership – thanks to the collective efforts of some new faces mixed with some tried-and-trusted stalwarts. Our early pre-season preparations were boosted by the arrival of free transfers Alex Gogic and Drey Wright. Alex has become an instant favourite with supporters as our midfielder enforcer, while Drey showed a

glimpse of what is to come with his first goal for the club against Rangers. They were joined by one of the brightest up and coming talents in Scottish football in Kevin Nisbet, whose early impact speaks for itself. Six goals and two assists in eight appearances – not to mention his relentless work rate up front alongside Christian Doidge – have already led to talk of him becoming a Scotland international in the not too distant future. Kevin, who had been a long-term target, cost the club a six-figure sum but is already well on the way to justifying the faith placed in him. Stephen McGinn earned a deal that will run until the end of the season to add experience, leadership and versatility to our dressing room – while Jamie Murphy

offers proven quality. Dillon Barnes arrived on loan to challenge onform Ofir Marciano for the gloves, while a sixfigure sum secured former Scotland Under-21 international Kyle – who offers real drive in a number of positions and is already well known to Jack, who handed him his debut as a St Mirren player at 18 years of age. Like Kevin, he fits the profile of a young, hungry local talent who we see improving in Leith under the guidance of Jack, assistant John Potter and the rest of the dedicated staff at our training base. We were able to recruit as a result of some careful player trading and taking the strategic decision to run with a tighter first-team squad. Adam Jackson, Daryl Horgan and Florian Kamberi left Easter Road for fees that were reinvested back on to the pitch. We said goodbye to some popular loan players and some seasoned campaigners, alongside Development Squad prospect Ben Stirling – in part to create a clear pathway for breakthrough talents like Josh Doig, Steven Bradley and Ryan Shanley, with others within the Academy desperate to follow in their footsteps. Fifteen-year-old goalkeeper Murray Johnson – a Scotland youth international – has also benefited from sustained exposure to the first-team environment, under the tutelage of our new goalkeeping coach, Craig Samson.
Nine of our young players have been loaned out, looking to earn the right to play firstteam football on a weekly basis to boost their development alongside a training programme at HTC that keeps them in touch with their parent club – with the exception of Yrick Gallantes. Philippines international attacker Yrick has pursued an exciting opportunity with the newlyformed Azkals Development Team – which effectively sees the national Under-23 side compete in their domestic top-flight – that will run until next June. As a club committed to the continued development of young players – as evidenced by Ryan Porteous winning a senior Scotland callup – we have awarded professional contracts to six young hopefuls. Connor Young, Jack Brydon, Jacob Blaney, Josh O’Connor, Murray Aiken and Robbie Hamilton will all be given every opportunity to make a name for themselves and carve their own little bit of Hibees history. On top of that, we were able to secure Australian international Martin Boyle to an extended contract at Easter Road as he enters the peak years of his career and remains a huge influence on and off the pitch. We hope you like the look of your squad for Season 2020/21. None of this would have been possible without the backing of our loyal supporters – through season ticket sales that have exceeded 11,000, contributions to Hibernian Supporters, our fastest-selling strip of all time and a few of our other initiatives.

@LeeannDempster
We’ve come out the transfer window with a smaller squad but careful player trading – in and out – has helped us add real quality. As long as supporters are happy, I’m happy. Our priority now is to get our supporters back home to Easter Road.

hen Kyle Magennis ran on to the Easter Road pitch as an 18-year-old for his St Mirren debut in October 2016, he couldn’t have imagined that four years later he’d be taking to the same surface in the green and white.

with the pair leaving a lasting impression on each other that’s resulted in this week’s move ahead of the transfer deadline. A five-year deal is a sign of the management team and club’s faith in the former Scotland Under-21 international, who can’t wait to get started.
vs BROR A R ANGERS | 07/10/20
KYLE, THE LAST WEEK MUST HAVE BEEN A BIT OF A WHIRLWIND FOR YOU. TALK US THROUGH IT FROM YOUR PERSPECTIVE. It felt like a long week. I thought the move was going to happen and then, a couple of times, I was told it was looking less likely. Then I got a phone call at the last minute on the Friday of the Hamilton game telling me to come through for a medical. The rest took care of itself.
YOU’RE OBVIOUSLY HAPPY WITH HOW IT’S PANNED OUT. I’m delighted. It’s a fresh start for me, which is something that I think I needed to do to progress in my career and I’m glad it’s here. I know the coaching staff and I know a lot of the players, so it feels like a straightforward move in that respect. I know all about the size of the club anyway, but I’ve also heard how much the likes of Paul and Stephen McGinn have enjoyed it here so it was a no-brainer all round.
YOU SAID YOU’VE BEEN WITH ST MIRREN FROM THE AGE OF FIVE, SO IT CLEARLY WAS IMPORTANT TO YOU TO MAKE SURE YOU LEFT ON GOOD TERMS. I was there for 17 years of my life and I think I left on the best possible terms I could have. I didn’t fall out with anyone and I appreciate that. It was like a second family for me there – a home. It was emotional in some respects to be leaving but I really am buzzing to be here. It’s a new challenge and one that I think will help me develop as a player and a person. We should be trying to finish in the top four here, which would mean European football next season. That is something I would love to be involved in – to test myself at that level. I look at John McGinn and what he achieved – starting out at St Mirren, like me, and then really making a name for himself at Hibs – and those are the footsteps I want to follow in.
JOHN HAD ALREADY SEALED HIS LEGENDARY STATUS HERE BY THE TIME YOU MADE YOUR DEBUT AT EASTER ROAD AT ST MIRREN. HOW DO YOU LOOK BACK ON THAT MOMENT? I just remember getting the shout at half-time. The butterflies started to kick in and the stadium wasn’t far off being full. It’s a big game to have come on in but the gaffer had faith in me. It shows that he still does when he played such a big part in bringing me here. I’m looking forward to working with him again. I wasn’t even getting much game-time with the youth team before Jack came in. He was the

one who really gave me a chance. I started playing and developing there before being made captain. If he hadn’t come in, I don’t know what way my career would have gone in.
DOES IT HELP TO HAVE SO MANY FAMILIAR FACES IN THE DRESSING ROOM? I obviously know the gaffer and Craig Samson, the two McGinns and Stevie Mallan. I played alongside Ryan Porteous for the Scotland Under-21s. It gives you a head-start in terms of settling in. It just feels like the right time to be coming here in general. It’s not the biggest squad but it’s a strong squad, so I know my first challenge is to break into it. Hopefully I can show what I can do on the training pitch and the gaffer believes in me enough to give me a shot in the team.
YOU’RE WORKING YOUR WAY BACK FROM A LONG-TERM INJURY. HOW FAR AWAY ARE YOU FROM FEATURING? I feel ready to go if the manager asks. I played 45 minutes with some of the younger players at St Mirren. I feel fit and I’ve been in full training for three or four weeks. I’m keen to make up for lost time, as it’s been difficult – especially rehabbing from an ACL injury in your back garden with all the lockdown restrictions. My family and the physio at St Mirren – who would Facetime me every morning – were brilliant. My brother was the same. They all kept me motivated and it’s paid off now.
FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN’T SEEN YOU PLAY, HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF? I’m energetic, aggressive, I’m not scared of a tackle and I like driving forward. I’ve been told I’m quite a powerful runner, I like breaking the lines and I’m not scared to hit a shot. Hopefully I can add more goals to my game. We have some big games coming up so hopefully I get the chance to show what I’m all about.
However, the family love affair extends beyond that – with Stephen a regular at Easter Road to follow the pair or tuning into Hibs TV when that wasn’t an option, while others within the McGinn clan are familiar faces around the stadium and always welcome. So, it’s no wonder if feels like home already for the former St Mirren captain.

The Highland League recently announced that their new campaign won’t start until the end of November, so tonight’s Betfred Cup contest represents their first competitive outing since March. Manager Steven Mackay has had to make do with a couple of pre-season friendlies, but there’s no doubting the commitment of his players. No-one exemplifies that better than defender John Pickles, who had to catch a ferry ahead of a two-and-a-half hour drive just to catch up with the team bus before their own three-hour jaunt to Easter Road. He told BBC Scotland: “Games like this are such fantastic opportunities. “You want to test yourself against the best opposition possible. You want to go to the big stadiums. It is a good trip for boys like us who don’t get to play in places like that every week, so it is very exciting. “We can be quite resilient. We are quite good defensively, so the longer we can keep Hibernian out you never know what can happen.” On his commute, the electrician added: “I’m used to it now so it’s not so bad. Getting up early on a Saturday morning for football is a lot easier than getting up for work through the week.” Generous Ross County have also stepped in to help – covering the Covid-19 testing costs for this game. Screening isn’t currently required for lower-league games but clubs must do so for cup matches against top-tier opposition. County chairman Roy MacGregor said: “I just felt they are our neighbours – part of our Highland way of life – and I should reach out to them. “They were very grateful for it. The challenges facing Ross County are the same as the challenges facing them, but we get television money that these clubs don’t and we should try and share it at a time when we are all suffering.” We’d like to extend a warm welcome to tonight’s guests. We hope you enjoy your visit to Easter Road Stadium.
