THE BIG INTERVIEW
LEWIS
STEVENSON
SPONSORED BY
vs KILMARNOCK | 16/01 /21
e were delighted to confirm on Friday that our long-serving leftback, Lewis Stevenson, has agreed a contract extension that will take him through until the summer of 2022.
W
It comes in the week that the modern-day club legend recorded his 500th appearance for The Hibees, as he replaced the injured Josh Doig at Celtic Park. Only four players have made more appearances for the club across our 145-year history – Willie Ormond (506), Pat Stanton (617), Arthur Duncan (626) and Gordon Smith (636).
Lewis made his Hibs debut as a 17-year-old in a League Cup tie at Ayr United back in 2005 and went on to write his name in the history books as the only player to have lifted both the League Cup and Scottish Cup in the green and white. A credit to the club on and off the pitch, Lewis – alongside close friend and team-mate Paul Hanlon – serves the community through his work with the Hanlon Stevenson Foundation. Head Coach Jack Ross said: “We’re all pleased to have Lewis on board until at least the summer of 2022.

“I’m sure every manager who has had the pleasure of coaching him would say the same – he is a delight to work with. There are no original compliments to pay him. “Like the supporters, we all appreciate everything he has done for the club and his fitness levels and quality of performances are testament to his desire to keep on achieving for Hibernian. I know he is driven to add to the successes he has enjoyed in the past. “There is no better role model for any young player and it’s no surprise to have read Josh Doig say as much repeatedly this season.” Lewis added: “Everyone knows what the club means to me and it was a short conversation to extend my contract. This is where I want to be. “I’m enjoying my football as much as I ever have and I’d like to thank the manager, the staff and my team-mates for that. “I’ve never taken anything for granted since my first game for the club, which seems like a long time ago now. It’s been a privilege to play for Hibernian and I’m proud that I’ll get the chance to do so for a little while longer.” When compared to other Premiership left-backs who have played more than 300 minutes this season (to offer a worthwhile sample size), Lewis tops the league in terms of his passing accuracy (84%), dribble success (80%) and challenge success (68%). He is second in the table for tackle success (79%). We sat down with Lewis to talk about the next chapter of his Hibs career. LEWIS, CONGRATULATIONS CONTRACT.

Thank you. It genuinely was a short conversation with the gaffer and Graeme Mathie. They were both very complimentary and I’m delighted it’s been sorted. I think it’s an exciting time for the club – with the Betfred Cup semi-final coming up and a European place to aim for – and I’m as determined to be part of a successful Hibs team now as I ever have been. AFTER OVERCOMING THE INJURY WHICH BLIGHTED YOUR START TO THE SEASON, YOU DO LOOK AS IF 8

YOU’RE ENJOYING YOUR FOOTBALL. I am. It’s encouraging when you hear the backroom staff here say that my physical stats are consistent with the numbers I was racking up earlier in my career. I do feel in good condition. People maybe think I bomb up and down the flank a bit less than I have done at some stages, but we play a slightly different system to that now so it’s a case of different things being asked of me. I’ve really enjoyed playing for the gaffer. I might get a bit of stick for saying this, but I think he’s a good mix of a lot of the best bits from the different managers I’ve worked under. DO YOU HAVE ONE EYE ON THE FUTURE? I think you have to and I’m sure boys like Darren McGregor, David Gray and Paul Hanlon would say the same. Subconsciously we probably spend more time now with some of the younger players to pass on bits of information that they might find useful and I think we all enjoy that side of it. But – and I think the other three boys would say the same – first and foremost we’re as committed as every to being first-team players. That drive is still there, and the intensity is there in training. Whenever the gaffer needs us, we’ll be there. No-one wants to just make up the numbers. YOU HAVE PLAYED A BIG PART IN HELPING BRING ON THE LIKES OF JOSH DOIG AND SEAN MACKIE, WHO ARE BOTH QUICK TO SING YOUR PRAISES. That’s nice of them. I just think a lot of the two of them and if I can do anything to help then I will. I was lucky to have someone like David Murphy to look up to when I was breaking through, even though he was just a few years older than me. He played like an experienced, quality player. Josh and Sean are different players but they’ve both got a lot going for them. Obviously, I’m determined to play in as many games as I can but I’m proud when I see them doing well. WHAT TARGETS DO YOU HAVE FOR THE REST OF THE SEASON? We’ve spoken privately and publicly about wanting to challenge for silverware and qualify for Europe so that has to be the goal. We’ve dropped some silly points at times this season but, in the main, we’ve been pretty consistent. I think the league table backs that up. So there’s a lot there for us to go on and achieve.

THE OPPOSITION
KILMARNOCK
Like most teams in an unpredictable Scottish Premiership, Kilmarnock have gone through some ups and downs this season. There were understandable concerns on the back of five straight defeats, but they’ve rallied well with 2-0 wins over Motherwell and Hamilton either side of a 1-1 draw with St Mirren. Killie will still feel they have what it takes to be in the mix for a top six spot this term.
M A NAGER
ALEX DYER Alex Dyer has already won the respect of Scottish football for the way he dealt with a recent letter containing racial abuse, penned by a ‘supporter’ upset following a fifth successive defeat. Dyer said: “I’m never going to let someone like that deter me from doing my job. Never ever.” Steve Clarke’s trusted assistant during Killie’s recent revival, he stepped away from his role in the Scotland setup to concentrate fully on ensuring the progress at Rugby Park won’t prove to be a flash in the pan. Clearly has his team playing for him after a rocky run.
C AP TA IN
GARY DICKER Kilmarnock have missed the influence of injured skipper Gary Dicker, who hasn’t featured since Killie’s win over Ross County back in November. Dicker, who invariably seems to play well against Hibs. Alex Dyer said of him recently: “Gary is a big miss because he’s a big part of us. People could see what he brought to us earlier in the season. He is an organiser and a leader.” Dyer and supporters alike will be counting the days until his return from the sidelines.
K E Y PL AY ER
GREG KILTIE Greg Kiltie is finally starting to show people what he’s all about. The former Scotland youth international has had a wretched time of it with injury, but Killie always kept faith in the homegrown prospect and it’s being rewarded now as he fast becomes their main man. Capable of operating across the frontline or in a deeper creative role, he’s certainly making up for lost time. The local lad will need to be closely monitored.

Kevin Nisbet kept his cool from the penalty spot to score the only goal of a fiercely-contested game. Kilmarnock defender Clevid Dikamona misjudged a clearance and ended up tripping Christian Doidge, with his strike partner taking full advantage to net his eighth of the season. Joe Newell picked up the Man of the Match award after a typically classy display in midfield. OFFICIAL MATCHDAY PROGR AMME
